leader. >> blizzard or not, if the iowans have shown up, we have shown up as well and will lead this country in the same way. >> iowa, you know how to do this. >> we are never going to surrender. in the end, we will win, win, win, win. >> a few hours left before the caucus tonight. i'm asking you to show up. >> can we get this done, can you go out there and bring it home? >> sandra: republican presidential candidates making their final pushes to get out the vote on a frigid monday, and what's shaping up to probably be the coldest day on caucus record there in iowa. oh, john, it's officially election season 2024, and it is a cold one indeed. sandra smith in new york. this is "america reports". >> john: the thing i'm wondering, where did the last four years go. seemed like yesterday we were doing this. i'm john roberts in washington. 40 delegates up for grabs in the hawkeye state and based on the
11:02 am
results tonight. big story lines, will the polling enthusiasm match reality for president trump. who emerges as a clear alternative to trump heading into the next contest in new hampshire, and will the cold keep folks at home. >> sandra: that is a big question and very real one. complete coverage begins now. neil cavuto is on the ground and we'll talk to him about the economy and troubling polling for president biden as republicans cast their first votes. >> john: but first to grady trimble who sensibly is live inside trump headquarters where volunteers are working the phones. grady, always somewhat perplexed by watching correspondents and even anchors like neil cavuto reporting outside where there is perfectly good warmth inside. what's the mood like there? >> john, i'm very grateful to be here, the first time i have reported from inside in the past week, maybe more than that.
11:03 am
so, not taking this for granted and neither is the trump campaign, taking anything for granted here in iowa. you can see the dozens of volunteers behind me, they have been here throughout the day making calls, trying to reach as many iowans as possible to number one, make sure that they show up to caucus tonight. but also to make sure they know where their caucus sites are and that they show up early. here at trump campaign h.q., several members of congress have stopped by to shake hands with supporters, say hello and thank you to them. and former president trump himself at a rally yesterday here in iowa told his supporters they have got to get out tonight, no matter the weather conditions and no matter their condition. >> you can't sit home. if you are sick as a dog, you say oh, i'm not going to make it. even if you vote and then pass away, it's worth it. >> most folks are paying attention to where former south carolina governor nikki haley
11:04 am
and florida governor desantis land tonight. desantis has focused heavily on building a strong ground coalition in iowa, a lot of pressure on him to do well. but haley is the one with that last-minute momentum. former president trump has also ratcheted up attacks on entrepreneur vivek ramaswamy, maybe a sign trump is a little concerned he'll eat into some of his support. elon musk, though, telling his followers on x not to count ramaswamy out today. the tesla ceo says ramaswamy will far exceed the polls when the votes are counted. >> look, i think that anybody who is paying attention to this race has to have their head stuck in the snow not to know that we are surging here at the late hour and i think at this point the other campaigns know it, too. for my part, i'm not going to reciprocate with attacks, he was a good president and represented the will of the country and the our america first movement. >> john, we were sort of joking
11:05 am
how cold it is outside at the top but it's clear that all of the campaigns are legitimately concerned about how that might impact turnout tonight, who that might help, and just have to wait and see what happens. record turnout back in 2016, but temperatures were about 40° warmer than they are going to be tonight at 7:00 p.m. >> john: iowans, if anyone, know how to deal with the cold. interesting to see byron donalds at the headquarters, some have touted him as a running mate although he would have to change his voter affiliation. glad you had the good sense to stay inside. >> yes. >> sandra: 33% of americans currently approve of president biden's job performance, that's according to a brand-new abc poll and tonight some voters will get their first chance at making a change in the white house. host of "your world" and coast to coast on fox business, neil cavuto is joining us now.
11:06 am
great to see you, live from iowa, and you just wrapped an interview with nikki haley and you asked her a really important question. play this out. >> how do you feel about the idea that many of your fans want you or no one. how do you feel about the idea that many of your fans want you or no one? >> well, that's why we are going to win is because they want someone else. i mean, you go all across this state, people are tired. they are tired. >> do you support that view, if it isn't you, it doesn't work out and it's donald trump, that they are going to go elsewhere? >> look, i would sake donald trump over joe biden any day of the week but make sure we don't have that option. >> sandra: interesting question, what did you make of her response? >> you know, it's interesting because she's trying to thread the needle here and then trying not to offend trump voters, of course that was one attack line that chris christie would use, you are trying to play it too
11:07 am
safe but i did talk to a lot of her supporters in the diner and not a word out of you, sandra, why is it you like to go to diners for the stories. but having said that, she just showed up when we were there. one thing that came through through so many of her supporters, when push came to shove, she's not the nominee, they are not going to vote for donald trump. i would say it's probably in that vicinity of 60%, des moines register and others point out the passion of her supporters, if she's not the candidate would go democrat. so, that will help her. obviously in new hampshire, i cannot imagine it being as big a help in this state, we'll see. >> sandra: i'm curious your thoughts, neil, covering the economy as you do, what we are seeing and feeling on the ground and the fox voter analysis and hear from voters as they show support for their candidate how they are feeling about the economic environment on the ground there. the "wall street journal" with the piece out today on how iowa's economy is faring into
11:08 am
the caucuses. they point out that the state's economy is growing, neil, but at a slower pace than most of the country. i wonder how voters will prioritize this today. >> well you know, one thing that's very clear among a good many of them, and even outside diners, and they say the same thing. food costs are killing us, and they go back to food. iowa is a bread basket to a lot of foreign countries as well, china is a big recipient of its goods, that's more problematic in the process. but having said all of that, sandra, you understand that yes, the numbers do support what the president said, the economy is improving, jobs are gaining, retail sales are strong, consumer shows enormous resilience, seeing it some of these numbers, clearly in the market but it's not resonating with americans and a bit of the situation for the administration stuck in the position of saying things are really getting better, trust us on this,
11:09 am
reminded me of the conumdrum george bush, sr. was in, americans were not feeling it. irony was that back then president bush was technically right, coming out of the recession, the slowdown but not enough time to help him get re-elected. this white house argues and they are saying we have a little more time to do this, time to sink in. these numbers, you know, sandra as well as john, you have reported them and they have been out there and people are not feeling it and it's not improving. let's see. >> sandra: if i could just finish up with this abc poll, neil, to exactly that point on americans financial position under this president, just 13% in this abc poll say they are better off since he took office,
11:10 am
not as well off, 43%. and about the same, 41%. quick final thought there, neil, as we anticipate a big night ahead. >> i think, sandra, it's all about getting out the vote. you've heard that many, many times, and heard you and john talking about the weather, it's very cold here. i'm not one to whine about the cold but it is very, very cold here and the one thing i discovered is that the worry is not so much a part of the lot of the people i've been talking, they say to a man and woman, try and get out and do this, but surprised by the number of iowans who told me i don't want my mom or dad doing this, want my aunt or uncle doing this, they are old, particularly those who live outside urban areas like des moines and sioux city, whatever was plowed is covered with snow again, and they don't want older relatives dealing with that, it could have an impact on the final results
11:11 am
here. who that benefits or whose supporters are more interested in getting out here that will decide this. >> sandra: and the rural voter might have more treacherous conditions but might be more used to battling those conditions than the urban -- so it's -- and a lot of donald trump supporters, walk over broken glass for him or sheets of ice for him but we'll see. you are quite right. monitoring that and who deals with the body blows of this cold will matter. when you caucus as you know, you have 1700 precincts or so but some of the sites which end up being people's homes can get crowded, lines literally out the door. you don't want to be, you know, waiting outside a door when it's the equivalent of -30°. >> sandra: dress well, obviously. neil, good to have you and see you. we'll see more of you later on. thank you so much. john, so much, obviously at
11:12 am
stake here and what voters are feeling and what enthusiasm is out there for these candidates. we will see soon. >> john: a lot of enthusiasm and if you wear snow pants, you can weather pretty much any temperature out there. >> sandra: slide down the hill. >> john: my friend bruce said we are iowans, we know how to work when it's cold outside, the weather is not an issue. we'll see, though. all eyes on iowa as caucusgoers are preparing to make their voices heard over who should be the republican nominee at the pivotal first of the nation iowa caucuses. which candidate made their mark on iowa republicans. we are sitting down next with kathy. >> sandra: boeing backlash. a string of safety scares in the sky, all eyes on boeing production and its suppliers. what we are now hearing from the faa. i brought in ensure max protein with 30 grams of protein! those who tried me felt more energy in just two weeks. -ugh. -here, i'll take that.

>> sandra: a string of scares in the sky on boeing aircraft drawing criticism to the company and its production. like this terrifying moment a door plug blew off this plane mid flight. fox business correspondent hillary vaughan has more on all of this for us. what is the faa doing? >> sandra, they are doing an immediate audit of boeing's manufacturing and production process and boeing announced today that they are going to do additional safety checks for their 737 max aircraft. but hindsight is 2020, and today there are questions, if the faa was mia and why they did not see this coming after just last spring the faa assured congress the 737 max was totally safe. now people are taking a closer look at the faa hiring
11:18 am
practices, particularly their dei, diversity, equity and inclusion hiring practices. faa has gone out of its way to include people with different abilities and also people with intellectual and psychiatric challenges, too, giving some people pause. the faa writes of their diversity, equity, inclusion hiring this, targeted disabilities are those disabilities that the federal government as a matter of policy has identified for special emphasis in recruitment and hiring. they include hearing, vision, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, intellectual disability, dwarfism, and managers can hire them on the spot if they have proper documentation. faa has been defending their diverse workforce telling fox this, faa employs tens of thousands of people. the agency seeks qualified candidates from as many sources
11:19 am
possible, all of whom must meet rigorous qualifications that of course will vary by position. >> sandra: all right, hillary, thank you. live from capitol hill. >> i think he's in the best position to meet expectations. enthusiasm, the energy, i'm seeing it on the trail. even with cold weather, people have been showing up and you can feel it. >> john: notice how we keep coming back to the weather here. iowa governor kim reynolds talking about the enthusiasm she has been seeing for florida governor ron desantis. republican candidates hoping that their message will stick in their final campaign blitz in the hawkeye state. bring in the editor and chief for the iowa capitol dispatch and former political editor for the des moines register. kathy, good afternoon to you, a quote from the gop chairman in iowa, he says this feels, i mean, the passion, anecdotal emotion, it feels a little bit like 2016.
11:20 am
how does it feel to you? >> it feels a lot colder than 2016, john. and -- >> john: back to the weather again. >> yeah, jeff said in the same interview that, you know, he would expect record turnout for the caucuses except if there's -- if there's below 0 temperatures and ice and that might knock down turnout to merely robust. he's the biggest salesman for the iowa caucuses. i do expect, i mean, this is now -- this was a foot of snow later from his comments and i do think that there will be an impact on turnout. how much remains to be seen, and you know, we are also kind of looking at where people turn out. >> john: yeah, all right. we'll see. apparently the sun is out and the roads are getting clear there. i want to go here to trump vital signs, in our fox news power ranking and what gives trump a good opportunity to make a big
11:21 am
impression tonight. each precinct captain has been asked to bring ten never before caucusgoers, and leads the field in small dollar donation, and endorsed by 100 and plus members, and a chance he could go above 50%, historic on the republican side. >> yeah, it would be historic. in fact, the biggest margin of victory in the republican caucus history is 12%. he's going to be well above that regardless of what happens with turnout, i think. and you know, a couple of other metrics there that you want to look at, and one is he's got, he says he has over 2000 precinct captains, that is more than you need to have one in every precinct to give a speech. you have a huge, really huge advantage in the enthusiasm in polls that voters say they have
11:22 am
for him compared to his rivals. and you know, so i do think that he goes into this with a lot of advantages. his big disadvantage is that it's very hard when you are riding on top like that to beat expectations. and in the iowa caucuses, we always want to talk about expectations because ultimately what the iowa caucuses are is a stepping stone into the later contest. so, that's why you see nikki haley here working really hard to beat expectations. >> john: i also wanted to point out that ron desantis is hoping to beat expectations as well, he's running third in the latest dmr poll, but a tour of all 99 counties, the full grassley, knocked on a million doors, what do you think his chances are tonight? >> i think he could look better than his poll numbers because of the ground game and organization
11:23 am
that he has. he has, as you said, toured all 99 counties, we like to call the full grassley after our senior senator here, but you also have, you know, more robust ground organization, people have been knocking doors, desantis people knocked on my door three times in the last two weeks. nobody else has knocked on my door. so, i do think that you have that, and that can help overcome the fact that it's bad weather, that not as many people are turning out, and then you add to the enthusiasm. so people are enthusiastic about donald trump. they are more enthusiastic about ron desantis than they are nikki haley. and again, when the weather is bad, that enthusiasm may be the difference. so he does have an opportunity to beat his poll numbers. >> john: all right. we'll see if he does. i want to go over some of the things to watch for, trump performance, needs to perform well in the rural counties that have under 15,000 in population,
11:24 am
including like winnebago county, and yes, that's where the motorhome came into being there, and johnson county, where the university of iowa is, and iowa city, scott county, davenport, and if ron desantis hopes to pull off a better than expected performance, he's got to do well up here in the northwest part of the state, which is where ted cruz did well, and mike huckabee did well, rick santorum pulled out a win by doing well in the four counties. do you think these candidates can exceed expectations in these particular places? >> yeah, i think that remains to be seen. i do agree, like northwest iowa is a heavy evangelical, i would add sioux county as well, heavy on evangelicals but trump also does well with evangelicals,
11:25 am
desantis has been courting that vote. you look at those urban counties, nikki haley would be expected to run strong in those counties. those are the counties that marco rubio won, he won five counties in 2016. not enough to win the caucuses but especially if she runs up the vote in the urban counties to have the -- meet the goal of doing well in iowa. >> john: and if 2016 is any indication, keep an eye on calhoun county. percentages out of that one county mirrored what happened statewide pretty accurately. great to talk to you. >> sandra: good stuff, john. as we have seen in public displays, president biden sometimes loves to tout his close relationship with his former boss, president obama. is there a growing divide over biden's 2024 campaign strategy.

>> john: as republicans battle it out in iowa, there is also a fight brewing among democrats. members of former president obama's inner circle have begun to go public with their concerns over the state of the biden campaign warning that biden's team is not following the successful re-election blueprint that was set by obama's 2012 team. mark meredith is here now with more, gosh, you wonder, is the obama armchair quarterbacking ever going to end here. how is the president's fundraising. >> a lot of factors. this year like 2012, a big question.

biden-harris campaign trying to put out happy news showing the campaign brought in about $97 million just in the last quarter. but numbers aside, the campaign still faces question if it has a winning strategy for november. president biden repeatedly brushes off the poor polling which shows them trailing republicans. the communication director was on tv urging pundits not to believe the polls. >> i'm very confident if the campaign continues to do the work that it has done, we will see the same result in 2020, when he beat trump. >> maybe served time in the obama administration, some feel the current campaign is out of step. politico reports that many biden allies and operatives see the concerns among obama contemporaries as overstated and the press coverage of them stale. and could we see a serious third party candidate jump in.

of the party is uncomfortable doing so. you're a democrat, is that the case? >> it is the case. i wish it was not. i am for border security as part of a comprehensive immigration reform program that would ideally be done on a bipartisan basis, but let's be clear. if joe biden is going to win, there has to be a commitment front and center to border security and sandra, i don't hear it, see it, and when i talk to my fellow democrats, i don't hear the urgency that the situation requires. so yes, it's a crisis for america and for the democratic party. >> sandra: very honest response there. sean, an opportunity for republicans. >> absolutely. and joe biden has a chance to actually blame republicans for fixing the border which joe biden's party doesn't want him to do. ukraine funding hold-up by republicans in exchange for securing the border. joe biden could cut the deal but he won't.
