ron desantis dropped out a couple hours after last week's program after canceling interviews with me and other sunday shows. and then pundits pressing nikki haley why she was still running in new hampshire? >> look at the media saying oh, this is donald trump's to have. look at the political class all coalescing saying everybody needs to get out. howard: if they wanted the republican race over this minute. msnbc looking at exit polls kept talking up haley's chances. >> fantastic news for nikki haley's campaign in terms of her chances that night. howard: it took 13 minutes after the polls closed for fox and nbc followed by cnn to declare donald trump the winner. on iowa caucus night rachel maddow boasted msnbc would not air one word of a trump's victory speech because there was cost to us as news organization for unairing true things.

msnbc flopped after critics like me called this blatant censorship. >> we'll see how it goes. this is decision one we consider to be open-ended live decision. howard: msnbc and cnn both cut away when trump handed the mic to vivek ramaswamy before returning. the dueling speeches with haley rushing on first were highly unusual. >> what a great night. god is so good. thank you, new hampshire for the love, the kindness, the support and today we got close to half of the vote. howard: >> who the hell was imposter that went up on stage before, like claimed a victory. she did very poorly actually. if you want to play it straight we also won in 2020. i don't get too angry. i get even. howard: the question now whether the media while loving the trump ratings will try to get even with him. i'm howard kurtz and this is media bus -- "media buzz".

louisiana the coverage mollie hemingway editor-in-chief of "the federalist." in los angeles, leslie marshall the radio talk show host. both are fox news contributors. molly, do you agree most of the media tried to minimize donald trump's victories in new hampshire and iowa, by changing the subject? >> seems the media do not want to give donald trump credit for various victories. it is important to note that nikki haley will not be the republican nominee. so the amount of coverage they're giving her is generous. she won't be the nominee how equally she acquiesces to left-wing media. wars not how to win them. she is getting a lot of help from corporate media but i do think people understand donald trump is the likely nominee. howard: nikki haley is the last woman standing if you want a semblance of a campaign. media out lietz, includes cnn

msnbc, projecting trump the nominee insisting over and over again nikki haley can't win south carolina. >> if you just look at the numbers, i would agree with mollie, not for the reasons the nikki haley will not be gop nominee is just the numbers. she is 35, 40 percentage points. behind donald trump in her home state. if i were nikki haley i would take a victory lap if that is what she is calling it, if you're a in two-person race you come in second, you come in last. when you want to go to your home state and lose. that doesn't look good. if she is hanging on for super tuesday i kind of understand that. the numbers don't show a pathway to the crown she is seeking to be the nominee for the gop. howard: only queens get crown. donald trump on truth social put up this, anybody who make as contribution to bird bain, bringing back the nickname this moment for the will be

permanently barred from the maga camp we will not accept them. mollie, press is calling that a threat. >> the bigger picture, nikki haley won't be the nominee, her continuing in the race viewed by a lot of republican voters a way to hurt trump over the long term in the general election. people are really looking at her decisions now, particularly with no path to winning the nomination, why is she staying in? if it is just to hurt donald trump in the general, if so that constrainses her future in the republican party. that kind of comment from donald trump speaks to that. howard: leslie, why don't you briefly respond to that. also, the question is, would it have been sustainable for msnbc to stay on its high horse and keep refusing to air trump's remarks even at the convention, even if he is in the white house? >> i'm going to answer them in reverse order. howard: fine. >> no, i don't think so. i don't think so. all media outlets are businesses

and they need to make money, ratings make money, you need people to tune in. there was a lot of people pushing back. msnbc and others got inn trouble calling iowa too early. this is slippery slope and a lot of mistrust in media and politics and elections right now. talking about the threat, and it was a threat, really anybody who is a former president and wants to the be president again shouldn't be talking that way the last time i check you want everybody's votes whether they like you or not, whether they were on board with you in the beginning or end up with you in the end, 43% of iowa voters that voted for nikki haley shade they would vote for joe biden. 730% of nikki haley voters in new hampshire do not identify as republican. so we, the democrats will take those votes for biden which some of those people will vote for biden especially if they're threatened and told they're not wanted and their vote isn't wanted. i don't think it is a smart choice to make as a politician running who wants to win and run

again. howard: those figures are partially the reason new hampshire was the best possible state for nikki haley. mollie, why don't you respond to that what was your take own haley coming out acting if she had won. she did cone grat late, trump, trump spending most of his speech slamming her? >> this refusal to show donald trump speaking is a horrific journalism problem. media outlets are not showing the republican front-runner, likely nominee, currently problem lynn the next president not showing what he has to say is not journalistic in any way. shows corporate media are not a business. they are actually activists. they want to make sure the american people can't hear what donald trump has to say. presumably they don't want to let people hear they have to say because they know it is very popular with the american people. they also know the current democrat likely nominee joe biden is not popular. the least popular president since herbert hoover. the policies are unpopular. they don't want to let people make a decision what they think

of the biden presidency versus what they thought of the trump presidency. they want to censor and obstruct people's ability to make good decisions. howard: leslie you can talk on that, when will the media shift to the dropout mode? they did it to desantis including nikki haley including on "meet the press" today. who anointed to them demand a candidate quit? seems like it has become a sob session if anyone is well behind in the polls? >> well i mean you know, the media, it's economics, isn't it, supply and demand. if the public is demanding that you ask that question or that you push the front-runner to the front and get rid of number two maybe they're weighing into that so i guess what came first the chicken or the egg and i think we've seen this a number of election cycles across the board. i think it's the impatience if you will of americans like, let's just get to it. we know he is going to be

nominee. when is she going to drop out, that kind of thing. speaking up to the lack of popularity of my president, nearly 70% of new hampshire voted for joe biden. he wasn't there. he wasn't even on the ballot. that was written in. that seems pretty popular to me. those are good numbers. that doesn't show a lack of enthusiasm. i know one state, one primary but i'm confident there will be more. speaking of those, you know, not likeable or not you know, approving of him that will change as we get closer to the election not only because it will be okay these are our guys but also the economy is improving. even when you have biden critics he should take a victory lap on this, "bidenomics." howard: let me goat mollie in. >> we'll see numbers change. >> another way the media is not covering the race properly, not covering the democrat primary a no-name conversation man got 20% of the vote in new hampshire.

betting markets there is more certainty about donald trump winning the nomination than joe biden. donald trump is 90%. but joe biden is 60%. howard: there was no real primary in new hampshire. the dnc got rid of it. it was a write-in for the president. >> one of the reasons there is no primaries. the media is not treating it like a primary. not applying democrats to vote for a variety of democrats. you never had such lack of support of incumbent nominee like you have for joe biden. democrat voters them set of are not being well-served by the media not treating that as legitimate news story as it is. howard: we'll see if it ever heats up. meanwhile nikki haley was went on "meet the press" this morning. she was repeatedly asked to get out and she said i would have to do better than new hampshire. that is 43%. that is that benchmark. let me play a little more of haley attacking the former president on "meet the press." we'll ask the question on the other side. >> he was totally unhinged.

went on a ram payment election night talking about revenge. howard: come back to you on that, mollie? >> i mean, it's a tough primary battle. so people are going to fight with each other. nikki haley will say mean things about donald trump. he will say mean things about her but the republican voter themselves, shows voters themselves they need to get more attention from the media about what they are looking for and the future of the republican party does not seem to be with nikki haley. it does not seem to be with someone who gets the support of democrats, independents who would vote moderate, who would vote democrat. that is not where things are going in the republican. howard: leslie, these attacks, the sudden media focus on the general election, whether trump can't win because he doesn't have enough independents we will see, but is that a moving of the goalposts? >> look, if you have, if you have your leaders attacking people, voters and not just their opponents, then isn't the media just, you know, holding up

a mirror to the society that they are broadcasting to? you know, i'm sorry, but you know if the bar is lowered, the bar is lowered across the board. i feel the bar has been lowered. i would like to see the bar raised. all of us as civilians, voters politicians, yes attack each other on policies but don't attack each other personally. to me that is acting like five-year-olds. howard: i have half a minute, mollie. the rnc moved to declare trump the nominee. he pulled the plug on the effort. wouldn't have that fueled the coronation effort? >> it does seem like it is not happening but there is a truth parties that want to win they solidify, they unify as quickly as possible. that's why nikki haley continuing after placing third, declaring victory in iowa. after placing second declaring victory in new hampshire, having no shot of winning her home state of south carolina, people think that they should unify and move on. howard: on primary night the

♪. howard: the media have long been grappling with the speech band stamina of the 81-year-old president. does joe biden have the mental acuity for a second term? now the pundits are suddenly pouncing on 77-year-old donald trump especially since he was discussing january 6th and mixed up nikki haley and nancy pelosi. >> nikki haley is in charge of security.

we offered her 10,000 people. howard: mollie, there is no question that president biden mental acuity has been a major issue especially since the media stopped ignoring it, acknowledged most democrats don't want him to run again partially because of the age issue. now are they trying to balance the scales right now playing up donald trump's perceived troubles? >> i don't think the media is in the business of balancing scales of all of donald trump. during the presidency they kept saying he doesn't have the president's fitness. joe biden stumbles, loses track, there is just the policy failures. they're so gentle and nice to him. everyone can see while these are two older men donald trump has energy and vigor that joe biden doesn't have. for the media and other democrats to make this a campaign issue will go very poorly for them. howard: leslie, one thing media polls are clear on, most people didn't want this rematch in part because they view both candidates as too old.

>> yeah absolutely. so when mollie says most people, most democrats didn't want joe biden, most republicans didn't want donald trump. most americans didn't want this rematch that is accurate. they're both older, pot meet kettle. if you're going to attack somebody who is a senior, you say that they're declining then you're opening yourself up to that as well especially when you're not like a 45-year-old guy standing there. and i'm not an md. i'm not going to make you know, such you know, calls, i don't, certainly voters this is not number one through five, 10, or even 20 for voters when it comes down to it. it comes down to policies. and, you know, certainly people have opinions but like i said, i get really frustrated when i see a lot of people making, you know medical analyses and they never went to med school. so people have their, people have their opinions. i certainly make mistakes. i'm not the age of those people. again this just plays into the level of criticism we have in

colleagues who think you will get a better deal under president trump, you won't. democrats will want certain concessions to do the things we're doing now. this makes substantive changes like asylum laws, gives the president certain tools. you can't erase that from certain memories. when trump goes out on truth seeing to sink the deal. it says republicans don't want to solve the issue, gives them something to say that for. howard: gives them a loud talking point. this heated up after mitch mcconnell who does want a deal, who is very so much supportive of aid to ukraine unlike son in his party, says this was a setback. not that he is changing his position. is trump asking all of these down ballot republicans who you know are going to be up for re-election this year, basically not to legislate until he is in office. of course what happens if he doesn't win. all of these members who are running for re-election will face the same angst from their constituencies. immigration passing economy as top voter concern. if they have an opportunity to do something about it and they don't, how do you excuse yourself from that? it is a tough position he would be putting them, pull this back, don't do anything. howard: perfect deal. there are no perfect deals in washington. look the white house has said to have made big cone sessions on things like parole and asylum republicans have been asking for. doesn't this hand the white house as you were saying earlier, theorgment that the former president and his party would rather let illegal migrants come in and fentanyl surge across the border to boost donald trump's re-election. >> it does you know, give them

credence to say that and they have been saying this all along, remember. making claims about republicans wanted to eliminate 2000 border patrol agents. they don't want to solve this issue. that was plainly not true. "washington post" gave them three pinocchios for it this happens, there will not be pinocchios, it will be legitimate. at the same time you have conservatives say you don't need new money to do this. ted cruz said biden could reimpose the three trump era policies he. there is truth to that. biden will not do that, he will need cover of congress to legislate these changes. when you're looking at asylum laws and parole authority and democrats in congress killing to do it, that is significant time to be in. we don't know where we will be after november. howard: here you have biden saying that he would shut down the border when it gets overrun. i don't understand why he doesn't just declare a national

howard: the media are more than happy to play up the democrats campaign on abortion rights. we know where they stand. president biden and his vice president just made a joint appearance on the issue and it is kamala harris who is being booked on top shows as the chief advocate. >> a person running into, back enter into the white house is proud he stripped americans, women of the right to make decisions about their own body. these extremist so-called leaders are basically saying to a survivor of a crime of violence to their body, of a

violation of their body, saying to these survivors and you don't have the authority or right to make a decision about what happens to your body next. that's immoral. howard: joining us now to analyze the coverage in new york, caroline downey a reporter for "national review." here in the studio, tim hogan a democratic strategist. caroline, there are obvious reasons why you would put kamala harris on tv on this issue but in the past the president's people have shied away from that because she had been in many media appearances fairly awkward. >> right. i mean the biden administration is clearly grasping at straws by deploying a harris this is a last-ditch effort but it is kind of an embarassment because she has been the joke of the administration up to this point. she fumbled every project she has been assigned to, especially the border although to a lesser extent of biden she has been in kind of hibernation.

now she is supposed to energize youth voters to fear-mongering? her usual way to appeal to gen-z to cackle or speak stupid seeing against. the impression to most young people she is inauthentic. howard: since joe biden himself has very few tv appearances, you news conferences like none, really, that harris has to take over. so, tim, i am sure, but i have no inside information, that the vice president has had media training. so whether you agree or disagree with her stance on abortion has she gotten better? >> i think she has. i think she is a key principle to deliver this message. keeping it front and center. if you want the media to talk about something you need to have a surrogate talking about it. i think she shows some real care about it. every day there is local headlines, there is a woman had a miscarriage in ohio was charged with felony. when she was in milwaukee, the state assembly was debating a 14

to their votes. you need the case and opening. democrats like joe biden. he did not run a super robust campaign in new hampshire. ran -- howard: he didn't run any campaign. people ran it on his behalf. >> he still won on a landslide. he is the 8th most popular minnesota politician on good day. there is no path there. howard: let me turn to the economy, caroline, a lot of headlines about 3.3% growth last quarter. biden, janet yellen obviously talking this up. what happened to all the people predicted a recession. but that doesn't mean millions of people don't feel financially insecure? >> right. the numbers may be what they are. they may spell some green, some positivity but i do think that most americans, it takes awhile for those numbers to translate to real results in their everyday lives. to real improvement in their quality of life. and so, i mean you could say all you want, look at our amazing record. look how "bidenomics" is finally

kicking in and working for people but there are still a lot of struggle. there is lot of suffocation at the gas pump and the growsry store. if it doesn't convert to real out comes forereal people quickly the biden administration legacy on the economy is still going to be very poor. howard: i don't think the biden people would even dispute the last thing you said about inflation and gas prices and so forth although they say it has come down. you will probably mention the stock market record. dow 38,000. but many voters unlike the media, not giving joe biden credit. >> but i do think we're turning a corner on it is about. howard: vibe session? >> larry kudlow is saying director of economic council for trump. he would be out there bragging about this too because you have consumer sentiment surging 29% more than 30 years in two month period. 4.7 million jobs. a lot to run on. a lot to brag about. things are getting better. that is what the biden campaign

where she came from. this is another scam. it is a political witch-hunt. howard: that was a video the jury delivering a staggering 83 million-dollar verdict against the former president. caroline, wall-to-wall coverage of this on the other channels, thursday and friday, leading up to that massive verdict, my question is, much of the media coverage seemed to suggest, imply, out right say, he got what he deserved? >> like you said, howard, it was gargantuan damages. from a pr standpoint the trump played right into trump's hands. these damages they look like political persecution to most of trump's loyalists. you're right, the media did have a heyday with this but i will be honest, most viewers saw this, they saw that the judge for instance refused to allow trump to take a day off from the trial to attend melania's mother's

out that something's a little bit off with how the judicial system is going full steam ahead on trump and even, denying him the chance to attend his wife's mother's funeral which is very reasonable request. howard: for one day, i thought that did not look good at all. tim there was emotional testimony from e. jean carroll who won five million dollars in damages at the first trial but trump still vehemently denies the alleged incident in 1990s in the department store and doesn't even know her. >> he will continue do that. at the end of day this is weaponization of legal system, juries of his peers that he is liable or guilty in certain cases. he is running a courtroom campaign because he to. not because he wants to. howard: he doesn't have show up to the cases civil fraud trial. why he is doing it? >> he chooses to. he senses it is a liability for him not to even be there. the best punch back he can do to do what he is doing. he is not a good position.
