1:06 pm
context being discussed now the white house and what this president could do to respond? >> after now more than 160 toxins u.s. forces across the middle east is quite clear the facts of the ground are right now is our rot is not being deterred they are certainly increase calls on capitol hill from lawmakers who want to see the biden ministration strike back and strike back at much harder including hitting targets in iran today is a sad reminder u.s. forces have to be perfect every time in shooting down the incoming drones at missiles the enemy only has to get lucky one time which unfortunately was the case today. >> the president said the u.s. will respond at a time and place of our choosing. lucas, thank you. tensions have been rising and the always volatile middle east since the israelite hamas war began. the question now will today's deadly attack escalate the danger even more? trey yingst is live in jerusalem.
1:07 pm
how could this affect the region and the immediate aftermath and in the weeks to come? what such a great question there is an understanding it's not a question of if the united states will respond to this deadly drone attack but rather when and where. right now the israelis are keeping a close eye on the situation. understanding their forces are currently battling other iranian proxies inside the gaza strip and also from southern lebanon the lebanese group there is a concern that if the united states ramps up strikes against iranian proxies in the region or targets are run within its own borders or could be a response that would target this key american ally the israelis have to be prepared for that possibility. but tonight the region is trying to get a grasp on exactly what took place we are getting a new statement at this hour. from an organization that says they are responsible but we are talking about the islamic resistance and iraq.
1:08 pm
this is an umbrella organization up by round backed iraqi and syrian militias. they said they were responsible for this one way suicide drone attack that didn't target the tower 22 outpost pretty statement the organization said they were continuing their approach to resisting the american occupation forces in iraq and the region and this is in response to the massacres for the exam th is annis entity agar people in gaza. while the eye run into and their proxies when the world to believe this is all about the war inside gaza's been ongoing since october 7 a massacre 114 days ago, analysts understand this is about tehran officials athere trying to light the midde east on fire. they want this to play to their advantage and are hoping a broader regional war would do just that. >> they put it on paper using the israel and response in gaza as an excuse to attack u.s. troops how it might netanyahu
1:09 pm
react to this? will he see his war against hamas as separate? >> the israelis have been preparing for the possibility of striking i run for years. under sandy developing a nuclear program and ironic as a direct threat to the jewish state. the israelis we watching tonight in the following days very closely to see with the american response will be to this drone attack on the border between jordan and syria. we cannot expect counterparts to be briefing one another at secretary of defense lloyd austin likely to speak with the country's minister of defense here in israel because again there is concern that if this unravels into a broader regional war around may not directly respond. but instead use their main proxy in the trend for it to launch missiles or rockets into israel it's part of what they have been dealing with the past three months cindy war erupted in early october.
1:10 pm
it's a partner with the preparations are. when you look at the organization that's taking responsibility for the deadly drone attack against american forces in jordan it is the same organization that took responsibility for rocket and drone attacks against major israeli population centers including israel third largest third-largestcity in their sout. so in the future of the coming days it is certainly something israel will have to be looking out for you cannot expect israeli forces and air defense systems to remain on high alert. arthel: indeed, trey yingst as always thank you. eric: the attack only the latest and u.s. forces in the middle east over the past three months. most of them blamed on the iranian proxies as we have said there's been at least 159 attacks look at the map all across the area since the israelis and the hamas war began hamas brutally attacked israel at that time. today's assault however it was the first deadly one for our forces the person to strike

jordan. joining us on the phone our chief national security correspondent jennifer griffin. jennifer, first question to the secretary of defense often back on the job what is the pentagon saying and their reaction about this attack? >> the pentagon is saying defense secretary austin will be in the pentagon for the first time since december 22 surgery, tomorrow he will be there to host but he did participate in all of the calls with the president and to brief the prespresident today he has been engaged from home by a secure link. this is what is interesting this is not just the deadliest attack on u.s. forces since october 7 the war in gaza it is the deadliest attack on u.s. forces since abbey gate in august of 2021 when the suicide bomber killed 13 u.s. service members tower 22 which is based on the border with syria just across the border inside jordan is at an interesting inflection point and crossing point.
1:12 pm
it is aware iraq comic jordan and syria come together and in fact not very far away is the airbase. as well as the base where those u.s. special forces have been base there is a safe zone around the space that is protected very, very carefully. but those hundreds of u.s. troops that tower 22 and were hit while they were sleeping last night generally serve as logistics and support to the u.s. special forces. it is interesting to note the timing of this attack i came as word of a possible cease-fire in gaza and release of houses member cia director bill burns was meeting with the egyptians aand a chief as well as the prie minister of qatar over the weekend. there was an expected good news in the coming hours and days.
1:13 pm
it is also clear it coincides with talks between the u.s. and iraq this week about the future of u.s. forces in iraq. it is clear the eye iranian's under this new umbrella group they have formed of a proxy forces including hezbollah and others have called themselves the islamic resistance of iraq which translates to hamas of iraq there is a reason ironic trying to link these attacks on u.s. forces and attempt to push u.s. bases out of iraq to the fight in gaza because of the popularity across the region in terms of anti- israel sentiment because of the gaza fighting. this is clearly time to disrupt not only a possible cease-fire in gaza but talks between u.s. and iraq. secretary austin issued a statement which he said he was outraged deeply saddened by the deaths of those who have been wounded in this attack he said quote and ran back to militias
