in overtime in las vegas. dramatic super bowl finish. super bowl lviii, two overtime games in the history of this one. last night was one of them. good morning. we're up early in las vegas. i'm bill hemmer. dana, good morning to you. i want to say you are the champion. i'll explain in a moment. >> dana: i am dana perino, and this is "america's newsroom." you are missed but know you love the super bowl. did it live up to the hype? >> bill: it was fantastic. really good. i was saying in the first half a lot of folks there wasn't a lot of scoring. both teams played at a high caliber level for football. second half it opened up. dana, i had the 9ers, you had the chiefs. >> dana: that's right. >> bill: you win the dollar. all right. i'll bring it home for you. we'll get to the other bet at the end of the show of the we had one more you may recall from last week and recap that. >> dana: i lost that one. okay. before we go we'll get to that.
6:02 am
we have to get you the news. chiefs overcome a double digit deficit to win the third super bowl in five years. for kansas city it was a moment to savor. >> know the kansas city chiefs are never underdog. the whole family chiefs kingdom is special. we're super bowl champs. kansas city, i'll see you out. >> viva las vegas. viva las vegas. >> bill: i guess elvis would approve. second time the 49ers have lost to patrick mahomes in four years in the super bowl. >> we all hurt and then everyone knows how it feels and don't have a lot of words for it. we're hurting. everything was perfect, by no means but we'll lose with a group of guys that's i would do
6:03 am
it with those guys any time. >> dana: a ton of attention was on taylor swift. maybe too much attention. did you catch a glimpse of her, bill? >> bill: i tried. i think she was across the way. the clock had 55 seconds over four hours was on her. she made it in from japan and you know what i was thinking, dana? so you had an overtime game, super bowl. you had the taylor swift story for the last four or five months in america. she is on the field with travis kelce. this is the height of the nfl. all these worlds collide at the same time. it is remarkable to see how that worked. mary kathryn hamm here and so is guy benson. here is how i scored it mk. post malone, soulful rendition of america the beautiful.

reba mcentire brisk national anthem and usher, making roller skates great again. what did you think? >> all of those. i love the super bowl. it brings so many people together and one of the cultural touchdowns we all share and brings people to football. an incredible sport. i didn't have a dog in the fight other than hardman who caught the touchdown. i am a mom and fan serviced with this halftime show. what i need is to feel like i'm in the club once per year. i need usher there, do i want him to take his shirt off? fine with me. do i want ludacris to show up? yes. do i want roller skates? i do. but all of these guys and all of this happening respects that i have both a bedtime and skincare routine that i need to get to. i'm a lady in the street but in my bed by a reasonable hour and i just enjoyed whole thing so
6:05 am
much. it will be a couple years of millennial moms being treated to this kind of show. >> dana: i was excited about the roller skating and offered to pick up where i left off on skate city in denver. and challenge bill to a race for charity. guy benson, it wasn't what the game was all about, though. two good teams and they battled it out. it was boring the first half, i stayed up for the whole thing, believe it or not. >> i'm impressed, dana, the first half there were a few explosive plays. the trick play by the 9ers resulted in a toucher. not much for the offensive-minded fan. the third quarter was dreadful until the end. these teams went to the next level from kind of a snoozer to a lot of fans to an instant classic. you can't beat a walk-off touchdown to win the super bowl. even if you are a fan of the other team you can't deny how exciting that is even though it's heartbreaking.
6:06 am
to bill's point, i thought there was a non-0 chance that travis would get on the knee and have a cultural supernova the likes of which we've never seen. perhaps that's coming another day. no pressure, guys, it's fine. >> dana: the other reason i thought the super bowl halftime show was great there was no politics and nobody wanted politics. biden decided to do something interesting. they joined tiktok to show youth and vigor and this is the video they played. >> chiefs or 9ers? >> two great quarterbacks, hard to decide. if i didn't say i was for the eagles i would be sleeping alone. >> game. -- >> harris: i get what they're trying to do. are they landing the punch? >> i'm glad there are captions on tiktok so i could catch all of that. we all watched -- many of us have watched the game with grandpa before and what we're
6:07 am
doing here. i don't mind he didn't do a super bowl interview. strategically it's good for a president to do that and reach a bunch of people i like having football without it. >> bill: so you had that and robert f. kennedy with a campaign ad that apparently a super pac paid $7 million to run. this is how it rolled. watch. >> kennedy, kennedy, kennedy for me. >> kennedy. >> bill: so what we do when we're we game. we're on x trying to get reaction from people at home watching. i got back to the hotel and i fired up that again and there is robert kennedy apologizing to family members who may have been offended by that spot.
6:08 am
what was going on there? >> i resent the spot because i will have that jingle in my head for several days that will drive me insane, first of all. as soon as i saw it i said wow, that's a big play. the kennedy family is going to hate this using the song of yesterday about jfk to update it involving this man who is now running as an independent and potentially threatening the democratic family. he apologized sort of to the family but he was excited about it on a different level. from a pure politics perspective, there are millions and millions of americans who hate the political system right now, aren't thrilled with either party or likely nominees and he is like hey, look at this fun throwback ad involving a kennedy and another one running for president now as an independent. it is probably money well spent. >> i have agree.
6:09 am
>> bill: if you are a government employee, you can't be on tiktok. but your boss can. m.k., go ahead. >> hard to disagree with guy. we should have far more jingles in politics and makes it more tolerable. taking a sample from the old kennedy legacy, putting it on during the super bowl and it gets the word out. not badly done. >> bill: great to have you guys on. hot takes, right? thank you, guy. thank you, m.k. >> thank you. >> dana: breaking news overnight as well. two israeli hostages reunited with loved ones this morning after soldiers extracted them during an operation in southern gaza. trey yengst live with the new developments. this was remarkable. tell us more. >> good morning. absolutely. a major development overnight as israeli special forces conducted a complex rescue operation to save two hostages. the mission taking place in the
6:10 am
southern most gaza city of rafah, a densely populated area just before 2:00 a.m. local time. on the second floor of a building israeli soldiers engaged hamas gunmen in a fire fight before securing the two hostages. >> at that stage the fighters pull the couple out of the apartment and rescue them accompanied by idf forces who gave them protection in the area until they reached the safe zone. >> once back in israel the two rescued hostages were flown to the medical center in tel aviv and reunited with their families. the israeli air support was fighter jets and attack helicopters that targeted positions across rafah. they say more than 67 palestinians were killed in the strikes. currently more than a million people sheltering in this southern city. the operation to rescue these hostages came just hours after a phone call between president
6:11 am
biden and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. >> dana: let me ask you does this indicate more of the hostages may still be alive and ready for rescuing? >> in israel today discussions are moving forward about this looming israeli operation into rafah. top israeli leadership in tel aviv saying they have confirmed hostages are in rafah and they are going to go after these hamas strongholds to rescue them. >> dana: thank you, trey. thank you. >> bill: wow. remarkable story. seeing those pictures, amazing. he is off the campaign trail and back in court. donald trump appearing at a hearing in a classified documents case that is in florida. we'll tell you why the stakes are so high in that one. coming up here, check it out now. >> president biden, something the special counsel said in his report is that one of the reasons you were not charged is because in his description you are a well meaning, elderly man

say the president is too old for a second term. peter doocy is live at the white house. you can't get 86% of americans to agree monday follows sunday. >> it is a tough poll for them. even now some elected democrats are publicly questioning why president biden and his team decided not to pitch him to a super bowl-sized audience. >> i would tell any politician including presidents to take the interview of the super bowl. the most popular thing. people care about that than politics. my view is when the president is out there, he is at his best. >> so you look inside that poll. 59% of americans are saying both joe biden and donald trump are too old for a second term as president. but 27% are saying only biden is too old. way more than the 3% who believe only trump is too old. this was conducted after the special counsel report that
6:20 am
described president biden as an elderly man with a poor ally. his closest allies are still trying to clean it up. >> small gaffes are what we do. speaker johnson of the house confused iran and israel. he said we're beginning to send aid to iran. donald trump confused nancy pelosi and nikki haley. here is what matters. not the occasional small gaffe. he had a 12-minute press conference where he was focused. all you are focused on is that one minute. >> we don't know yet if with the aides combat age questions showing us more or less of president biden. he did over the weekend promote john kirby. something white house officials are telling me is not in any way a demotion of the press secretary karine jean-pierre. >> dana: we'll see, peter doocy, thank you. bill. >> bill: a lot going on there. james freeman, "wall street

journal" with me. jose is with me today. former dnc press secretary. jose, you have a hard job today trying to defend these numbers. what do you say? >> look, bill, it is tough. the president is not having the best week. let's be real. that report tried to indict the president legally. they couldn't do that. now they want to indict him politically. we see the polls say both trump and biden might be too old to run for president. that's a personal opinion, i understand that. at the end of the day i really believe this election will be decided on the economy, inflation and so forth. age matters but it will not when november comes around what matters is the economy. >> bill: take the numbers a bit deeper now. back in the abc poll. is biden too old for another term as president? among those they polled they
6:22 am
found that among only 27% and then only trump at 3%. you see the whopping 86% on your screen whether or not he is too old. there is a number they asked about kamala harris, too. another number there on her approval rating. about put that up here okay. at the very bottom, 42% have a very negative view of her. james, we've been watching polls for a long time. i can't recall a very negative number for a leading politician like that before. can you? >> it's pretty striking. she is telling the reporters on the news side of our paper shh he is ready to lead. obviously a lot of voters will be wondering. they are wondering, they don't think he is fit now. they are going to wonder in somehow he is reelected how the next four years go. i think that special counsel's report really was a turning point. it was far from trying to indict
6:23 am
him. it was basically making excuses for him saying his mental faculties are so diminished he can't be put through a trial because people would just look at him as this amiable old forgetful guy. i don't know how when our government is saying that it can also say his position as commander-in-chief is ten able. i think something has to give here. for all those democrats, i think it's 73% in the abc poll who think he is too old. they have a great opportunity with the michigan primary, early voting starts this weekend, to say someone other than biden. dean phillips is on the ballot. maybe they want to write in their governor, gretchen whitmer. >> bill: a lot of republicans think the mainstream media is carrying the water for the administration for a long time. jose, in the "new york times" you had back-to-back pieces that really went after the
6:24 am
commander-in-chief including this one. the challenges of an aging president. james referred to it. is something turning here, jose? >> i really don't think so. at the end of the day donald trump, we can get him again. eight to nine months until november is a long time. if the economy continues the way it is going and inflation goes down. the federal rates continue to go down i think we'll be in a very strong place in a very good time. i get it, presidents make mistakes. biden makes mistakes, so does trump. he confused nancy pelosi with nikki haley. it is part of the job because they have to meet with so many people every day. i'm not worried about it. i think the media is making a bigger deal out of the president's age than really what it is. >> bill: okay, all right. james might be on to something. with that special counsel conclusion from last week.
6:25 am
james, once everybody read that, even the commander-in-chief felt like he had to come out and defend himself 4 1/2 hours later. >> senator coons was presenting that brief press conference as some kind of triumph. it was a disaster. he was cranky, evasive. blaming his willful retention and sharing of classified information on staff. a lot of our colleagues in the media talk about how cooperative he is. who are the staffers and what has he done to discipline them if it really was staff? which is obviously tough to believe when you have him on tape talking about the classified stuff. >> bill: yeah. there is that. james, thank you. jose, thanks to you as well. gentlemen, we'll continue this conversation very soon. thank you. dana, what do you think? there is a lot of news and headlines. just listening to doocy's report a moment ago, you worked inside that building. do you get a sense something is
6:26 am
changing there? >> dana: i do. i felt like when robert hur's report came out it was a significant and final turning point in the biden campaign might not realize that yet. i understand what they're trying to do saying trump does it, too. if you are in the white house trying to tell 86% of americans they're wrong, you have a lot of work ahead of you. >> bill: yeah. a tough job, you're right. >> dana: i don't know what they'll say. we'll pay attention to it and watch with interest. nikki haley seizing on those concerns about candidates' age and called for mental competency tests. live look of her on the campaign trail in south carolina. she will join us coming up on "america's newsroom." >> it is a crisis and well don't bear responsibility for a broken system and we're doing a tremendous amount within that broken system. but fundamentally, fundamentally congress is the only one who can
