that he was the focus of tonight's angle. >> laura: today over several hours in an atlanta courtroom, we saw why allowing a county d.a. to bring charges against a former u.s. president is absurd and destructive. now, fani willis is a leftist who thought that this case would catapult her to political fame, maybe even the senate or governor's mansion because it would be fanny the trump layer is. she was so full of herself she thought no one would notice when she hired her married boyfriend as her lead trump investigator. now, just to refresh everyone on the timeline here. on new year's day 2021, ms. willis started as fulton county d.a. and then the next month, 40 days later or so february 10th, she opens the criminal investigation into the trump election interference claim. and then months later by november 1st, she hires her friend, nathan wade, as a very special prosecutor. and then the next day he files

from divorce from his wife. now, of course willis and wade didn't expect that his divorce proceeding would become an issue in the trump case. but, at today's hearing, judge scott mcafee was considering whether the affair between the two created a conflict of interest that should knock them both off the case. today nathan wade took the stand on the question of who paid for their pleasure trips. >> did you take a trip with ms. willis in 2023 to belize. >> i did. >> did you take a trip to california with ms. willis in 2023. >> i did. >> did you pay for those trips on that credit card? >> i used the credit card to book the travel, but, understand,. >> she paid you back cash? >> well, let me say, this let's take the belize trip, for example, you started there. >> okay. >> that was a birthday gift to me. so i paid nothing for that trip, zero. >> okay. so the charges that are on your

card, she gave you cash for? >> she did. >> okay. >> laura: cash. now, we're supposed to believe that fani willis was carrying around just large amounts of cash. of course cash is not traceable. now, when the d.a. unexpectedly appeared on the stand today, she did address this or tried to. >> i know he initially paid for it. did you pay him back? >> for the cruise and for aruba yeah i gave him money before we ever went on the trip. >> you gave him cash before you went on the trip? >> um-huh. >> later this afternoon sadow. >> i'm asking if this he would reflected on credit card bills. >> $500 reflected on debit card. my recollection i took about 4 in cash with me. >> 400 or 4,000? >> 4,000. >> laura: wait, wait. 400 or 4,000?

she answered 4,000. now, who carries around that kind of cash? well, fanny does. again, very convenient, because you need a paper trail, right, to show that willis did repay mr. wade and that she wasn't getting a financial benefit from the lawyer that she hired to investigate trump. >> did you keep track of this cash that you paid him at all? >> what are you talking -- i don't understand. >> did you keep track? did you keep a allergic? did you keep track of it? >> i have only given him cash as i mentioned three or four times. there is no ledger. this isn't planned handing money off to each other. >> laura: of course. just friends handing money off to each other. this is ridiculous. just like the idea that ms. willis didn't know her ethical obligations as the county d.a. >> did you disclose your relationship to anybody at fulton county? >> no, i don't think so.

>> are you aware that fulton county requires to you disclose any relationship with someone that you are doing business with? >> i'm not aware. >> laura: to me, that was stunning. again, she is going after trump for election interference. she stunt even know her own ethical obligations? now, that was on top of many other stunning moments today where both witnesses appeared evasive and at times very argumentative, even belligerent. with glaring memory lapses about events that most people wouldn't easily forget. >> how many times mr. wade visited you at the condo between the time you moved in and prior to november 1 of 2020? >> i don't think often but i don't want to speculate. >> can we say more than five? more than 10? >> let's say more than 10, but i'm not sure that that is even accurate. >> what about any other prosecutor that's involved in the prosecution of this case?

>> i don't think any of them have. >> laura: yeah. because a personal residence is not a typical venue for official meetings between government lawyers. >> i'm asking you whether or not november 21st, 2021, there was a romantic relationship with mr. that's very simple. it's either a yes or a no. >> i don't consider my relationship with him to be romantic before that i'm not a hand-holder. >> you didn't see the need, if i understand, to tell any of the people on the prosecution team when you had established a romantic relationship with mr. wade, that the lead prosecutor, that is the -- the man that was basically giving orders to others was dating or having a romantic relationship with you? >> from at least 2020 me and mr. we were friends. we hung out. in november of 2021, i hired

him. i do not consider our relationship to have become romantic until early of 2022. >> the romantic relationship ended before the indictment was returned yes or no? >> to a man, yes. >> to a man, yes? to you, no? >> laura: to a man? what? women across america are laughing because every woman i have ever met remembers vividly when a relationship starts. she said well it started between february and some time in april. bizarre. now, of course, this all flies in the face of earlier testimony of a friend of ms. willis who was questioned about when this willis-wade relationship began. >> okay. so, you know that their relationship, their personal relationship began shortly after this municipal court conference? >> yes. >> and do you understand it, that their relationship began in

2019 and continued until the last time you spoke with her? >> yes. >> what motive would her friend have to lie about ms. willis' relationship with the prosecutor? the prosecutor, of course, that she hired to go after trump? it's unclear what motive she would have. but what is clear is that when fanny gets in trouble, fanny plays the victim. she stayed away for the most part from the race card today except for a few moments like this. >> did you have contacts with mr. wade in 2020? >> very limited contact because, um, mr. wade had a form of cancer that makes your allegations somewhat ridiculous. i'm not going to emasculate a black man. did you understand that? >> laura: what? again, her first instinct is to deflect and then try to engender some type of, in this case,

racial sympathy. there were lots of poor me moments. >> so let's be clear because you have lied -- i will tell you which one you lied in. right here. i think you lied right here. >> your honor, i'm going to object. >> no, no, no. this is the truth. >> judge. >> it is a lie. it is a lie. >> turned 50 in 2021, that's probably one of the worst birthdays i ever had. >> i asked you who knew? >> let me just tell you this. >> i am very private. it's like a woman doesn't have the right to keep her private life private. i don't need anybody to foot my bills. the only man who has ever foot my bills, completely, is my daddy. >> look, as wild as today's testimony was, and of the rifted by this even long before we knew who nathan wade was. it was obvious that the intersection interference case brought by this fulton county d.a. was tainted. by charging trump and 17 associates under a state racketeering statute, willis showed us who she really was, a rogue prosecutor on a political

mission to disqualify the g.o.p.'s leading candidate from the 2024 campaign. now, even never trump legal experts have thrown water on willis' case questioning trump's judgment, okay? okay, that's one thing. but portraying him with a state ricco statute as some type of mafia crime boss whose enterprise was subverting democracy? that is quite another. the willis investigation was a political vendetta. and it was a travesty from the get-go. there are plenty of low life radicals across the country who want trump off the political scene. but they shouldn't have the power to prosecute and be paid by state taxpayers or have any power to interfere with the 2024 presidential election. because that's election interference. and that's the angle. joining me now karoline leavitt a national press secretary for the trump campaign. caroline, what are the president's thoughts today about this hearing?

>> well, president trump has long said that this fani willis case is a sham. it has no legal basis. and it should be dismissed. and today the entire world got to see that president trump is 100 percent right. even msdnc the legal analysts over there on joe biden's own propaganda network admitted that fani willis had a very bad day. buy, more importantly, laura, joe biden had a very bad day it's joe biden and his white house who are relying on sham cases from fulton county, georgia, to new york city to washington, d.c. led by these far left democrat district attorneys and prosecutors to take down his leading political opposition. if you look at all of these cases, they all have a few similarities. they are brought forth by far left district attorneys and prosecutors. but the timing is not coincidental. all of these people, jack smith, fani willis, alvin bragg have

had years to prosecute president trump if they really felt like he was truly a criminal. but, guess what? they know that's not true. they are doing it to protect joe biden and remove president trump's name off the ballot ahead of the next election because they know that joe biden cannot beat him fair and square at the ballot box. >> >> laura: did the president watch some of this today, caroline? did he watch any of this hearing? >> our whole team -- our whole team watched this today along with the rest of the world, yes. the president did share some of the most gasping moments on his truth social page. we will continue to watch it. we will continue to fight it. and we will continue to make the case to the american people that this is a two-tiered system of justice. this is your tax dollars going toward prosecuting the former president who made your life better, secured our border, restored peace around this world. rebuilt the economy. but the thing is, laura, the american people already know that. that's why when you saw president trump's motorcade rolling through urban atlanta to get his mugshot just a few

months ago, you had americans in minority, urban, impoverished communities on the streets yelling "free trump." because they see this for what it is. the weaponization of. >> karoline, there was a moment -- hold on be, hold on, i gotcha. hold on. there weren't all cheerleaders on the other networks. and this is kind of predictable but i will get your reaction on the other side. watcher. >> this is explosive. fani willis is defiant. she is confrontational and, frankly, she is persuasive this afternoon. she is very irritated, livid the fact that she/herself feels as though she is being called to task and on trial. >> laura: well, that's laura coates over at cnn and that was after fani willis kind of played the victim at one point saying, you know, i'm not the one who is really on trial. let's watch that. >> don't let the legalese full l you. this is epic, this is monumental

if things are going in the direction we think. fani willis lied to the court. it's game over for her. she will be disqualified if they had a relationship prior to when they represented to the court. it's a huge deal. like i can't overstate it. >> laura: that's the msnbc one you were talking about. but she was actually trying to play the victim at one point and we will play that a little bit later on. but do you think that works? and, in this case, what if they disqualify her and, of course, her friend, nay tan wade, off the scene but they disqualify maybe her office and then try to restart this investigation? what is your -- what is president trump's view of this in light of calls for the governor's office to step in and certainly start their own criminal investigation or special investigation of this office? >> well, as president trump has long said, this case should be dismissed. not just because of these

allegations of misconduct that if proven true, if the court of law proves them true and they certainly appear to be, it should be dismissed on the merits of that also, on the basis of the law. this case has no legal grounding. our legal team has been fighting that since the very beginning. legal experts on both sides of the aisle absolutely agree. the president did nothing wrong. he abided by the united states constitution. and if we can't question elections in this country, then we don't have a country at all. and so we agree wholeheartedly as we have since the beginning that this case should be dismissed no matter who is prosecuting it. but, fani willis certainly isn't qualified to be doing that. >> laura: karoline so great to see you tonight. thank you so much. and so did today's drama derail that entire case as i just raised with karoline with the president? our legal panel on that and alvin bragg's schedule in new york with that other hush money trial, next. ♪ i know this might seem out of the blue, but i was wondering if you might pray with me real quick.

we are not talking about $20,000 in cash. i don't have $20,000 in cash right now. >> laura: joining me now chris landau former law clerk to justices scalia and thomas. also, mike davis, former law clerk to justice neil gorsuch, founder of the president and president of the article iii project. chris, let's start with you. your reaction and take away from the way that fani willis responded to these questions from the lawyers, co-defendants, in this case about the money transfer, supposedly between her and her special friend on all these trips that they had time to take with all this government work that they had. >> laura, it's just not credible. i mean, the judge is sitting there watching this. i think, you know, this is not lost on the judge in this case. i think the more important point here is this is the jerry springer show, okay? this is not normal that we have these local d.a.s prosecuting,

bringing criminal charges against the leading candidate for president. i mean, this has gone off the rails. and i think we as americans -- whether you like trump or not, have to say no, we are not going to let our criminal justice system be abused this way. i think that hopefully the judge in georgia will do the right thing and dismiss this case or at least disqualify this prosecutor because this is out of control. >> laura: now, i want to play a bit and we're going to go soundbite number 5, guys to you, mike, about how she tried to handle this question about the cash that she supposedly had on hand and at one point she said her father told her to keep all the cash, you always have to keep six months of cash, i never heard this in my life. you have to keep six months of cash for this but let's listen to this. >> the money you paid mr. cash,e cash in october of 2022 you do not know where that money came frncht do i know where it came

from. it came from my sweat and tears. >> do you know which job it came from? did it come from fulton county or a private job? >> it came from -- what are you talking about? so it could have come about from a private job because before i was d.a. i was in private practice. so i earned money during that time period that's probably in there. >> laura: at one point she was quoted as being kind of rather worried about money because she was going back -- she was going into government and she wasn't going to be able to make much money in government. mike, she was extremely belligerent at times, evasive other times. refusing to answer questions and deflecting to personal stories. the judge, for the most part, seemed to allow her to get away with it, which i agree with what judge jeanine said earlier today, it was -- i would have shut that down. if i was the judge i would be like "answer the question." >> yeah. remember what the allegations are here that fani willis illegally hired her secret boyfriend. she paid him $250 an hour. and she took illegal kickbacks.

and so she had a financial interest in this criminal prosecution, which is absolutely illegal as any lawyer would know. her defense is no, no, no, no. i didn't take illegal kickbacks. i didn't have a financial interest in this case because i paid back my boyfriends with cash. but i'm not going to tell you where i got that cash, how i paid it back. i don't have any accounting whatsoever of that cash but you just supposed to believe me that i paid back my boyfriends with cash. >> laura: well, at one point and we will go to the seventh soundbite. we have so many soundbites because this is so wild and chris can react to this. she was pretending like she didn't remember when the indictment -- she doesn't remember when their relationship became romantic. she didn't remember a lot about like how much money or where exactly they were or when they went or but this was another moment that i didn't find very credible. watch. >> i'm not sure that the tough

conversation didn't happen until after. a physical relationship. i'm sure if you asked mr. wade, because he is a male, he would say we ended june or july because physical contact ended then. just in my mind, being a woman, it's over when you have that, like, hard conversation. >> laura: now, chris, if this goes just to credibility of basic facts that, again, you are in a relationship, you know when it begins and ends and she kept saying well, for a man, you can see the lawyer's reaction like what are you talking about? she did that a lot today. in the end, chris, given what you have seen, where does this go from here? >> i think the judge -- the specific question for the judge is you should, willis, fani willis be disqualified from the case. and, if so, what happens to the case? is the taint from her involvement so significant that the entire case has to be dismissed?

as mike just said, there's a very strong argument that she had a financial motive to bring this sprawling case so that she could get kickbacks from her secret lover. you know, i think the broader point here, laura, is just the arrogance of these answers that we are hearing and the kind of sense that prosecutors feel like they are above the law. their whole case is based upon this principle that nobody should be above the law. and they get very sanctimonious and say this about trump. case shows how much prosecutors in country actually feel contempt for the law and they feel like they are above the law. and i don't think that will go down very well with this judge. i would hope not. >> laura: well, mike, the question chris raises is this all then the fruit of the poisonous tree, this entire investigation, which again, given her background, given everything we know about her family background, her background, she says she is really close to her dad, we will get into this with our political panel, but i mean, does the radical fall far from that tree

as a legal matter, does this mean the whole case gets thrown out or they get tossed and the case continues with another prosecutor? >> there's no question that fani willis and nathan wade must be disqualified and this judge should also dismiss this case because it's been tainted before its inception with this financial interest that fanny has in this criminal prosecution. and the new -- the attorney general can determine whether to appoint a new prosecutor and this new independence, non-corrupt, non-biased prosecutor can determine whether to refile these criminal charges. >> laura: well, chris, what about an obligation on the part of governor kemp's office? because there are a number of, you know, pro-trump people out there say that they really have an obligation, too. because state money goes to these county d.a. offices and if these offices are essentially

allegedly pits of money being wasted in corruption, what about their obligation to step in, at least start some type of real criminal investigation here? or at least ethical obligation, even if she doesn't know her ethical guidelines? >> right, i mean, again, it's important for the viewers to understand she is the fulton county district attorney. so, that is a county within georgia. the state of georgia, georgia has a governor and attorney general. they are in charge of enforcing georgia's state criminal laws. and it does seem like just on the face of it there might be some serious reasons to look into possible perjury charges, possible misappropriation of state funds. you know, these are serious things. frankly, i think one thing that warrants investigation is to what extent was this local county criminal prosecution incentivized by the biden administration? what are the links, if any, between the white house and

these local prosecution the alvin bragg prosecution. i think that is -- that's a big deal. >> laura: yeah, i'm sorry, chris. she was asked about this today. and, mike, and the judge kind of shut that down like what did you discuss? and then she said -- she said well, i'd love to -- i think she said i'd love to share that so that was shut down. we didn't hear much more about that but going to the coordination issue, which, brings us to march, end of march you are going to have the alvin bragg so-called hush money trial begin. the president is not going to be able to delay that that was news today in the other proceeding. what of that? >> yeah, so we have president biden with miss fingerprints on all of these criminal prosecutions against president trump, his leading political rival that includes in this new york case where this new york judge donated to president biden and democrats is going to hold this trial with president trump

we're doing tit-for-tat like that, i probably paid for as many meals as he paid for. >> laura: chris, they went on a lot of trips. i mean, big trips, i don't know, i don't know take that many trips i don't think. they had a lot of time on their hands to take trips. nothing more than $100, except some dinners. >> you can get. >> they both shared in the costs. >> yeah. if you can get to belize and cancun for less than $100, i would definitely like it talk to the travel agent about that. it's kind of wild to see. she seemed almost like a high school student been caught with something as opposed to an elected prosecutor. she talked about all the cash that she had and how she paid back for these trips. but she couldn't show a single withdrawal receipt. when you get cash, unless you are working under the tactical, even if you withdraw it out of the supermarket, there is going to be some sort of receipt for that the mayor hour claimed he never spent money on those vacations until they came across the credit card statements in his divorce trial.

these things actually have consequences. she seems completely unprepared to defend herself with any facts and completely annoyed about it. that's not surprising. for the last year she has been protected by a media that holds up any prosecutor of donald trump as a great person, as someone who is beyond reproach. just yesterday the "new york times" said that her story was very familiar to powerful black women that they would be persecuted unjustly. now we have seen her on the stand. now we know it's far from unjust. the evidence is very high that she is corrupt. >> laura: yeah. ned, to that point, we will go to soundbite number 11 to that point about no receipts. conveniently always cash. thousands and thousands of dollars kept in your house, et cetera. listen to this moment. >> of course i withdrew money throughout that time period throughout my life i have withdrawn money from the bank, yes. you bo to publix and overpay and go to another store and overpay. >> those records, if we had them, would show that, correct? >> yes, during the course of that time period i would have taken money out, yes.
