for example not only are we grieving the death of laken riley we are grieving the death of many because the crime weight has been increasing the homeless rate in athens has been increasing. just last week i had someone reach out to me and say their little league team was practicing and right next to the file homeless woman wearing only her panties came out those little boys had to witness that. this is safety issues we are talking about. just six months ago at night i was driving down a road camp to a red light there is a man standing with a baseball bat in about 5 feet away from my car walking towards me at first i chose to run the red light there is nobody else around i had no other kind of witnesses. it to me is become unsafe. we have homeless people trying to get into cars of people when they are trying to reenter to go home after going to the grocery store in places like that. we do have a true crisis in athens for safety.

really tough for fighting this wildfire this is the humidity levels out there right now. you were talking 10% very dry air on top of the dry air the winds are strong. that pushes these fires makes them hard to continue are looking at wind gusts in that area getting up to 40 miles per hour. expect a similar forecast you're seeing here on saturday to linger into sunday as well. we have fire weather warnings not just in the texas panhandle but stretching further to the north across a big swath of the planes here. the winds died down a little bit as you look further into the forecast but it stays dry no rain on the way. winds do die down a little bit when you get into monday, tuesday, wednesday. arthel: fox weather adam klotz thank you very much. before heavy smoke and flames continued to choke the panhandle in texas. officials in the lone star state that it has a torch more than 1 million acres so far the fires

only 50% contained. governor greg abbott says hundreds of structures have so far been destroyed joining us now mayor of amarillo, texas and the panhandle for the great plains meet. mayor, thank you for joining us. what is the situation on the ground right now and how do you see it? >> yes, sir, thank you for having us here today to be able to continue to discuss everything that is going on here. we have a few updates year to date we did have two flareups out there today. crews are spun up everyone is taking care of business today they have already suppressed both of those the winds are blowing 20 -- 25 miles per hour. right now we really need is we need these winds to calm down so we can continue to contain in contained incombat these fires. eric: the pictures we are seeing are so striking and horrendous. what is it like to go through this? what is that light for the service to deal with this and for your citizens?

>> looking at the videos it's truly apocalyptic. if you are up there and in it i was able to get up over it to see it. even some of the videos do not do it justice. it is a test of the panhandle spirit. what you are seeing right now is the entire community coming together. i could not be more proud of the way in which i believe over 14 state agencies an in 17 local agencies have responded. but this is by far the largest fire we have had roughly 1700 square miles. definitely something to be contended with. eric: was at the winds the unusually high winds combined with the dry grass in the dry conditions that really sparked this off? >> yes, sir. around here it's not uncommon to have 20 or 30 miles an hour winds but dry conditions a spark and can lead to pretty good size fire. of course we do not know the cause of this.

usually over 90% of all wildland fires are caused by humans. and so what is important right now as we keep this under control. what we need right now is prayer and the good lord to clone these winds back down for the next couple of days. eric: that is for sure how long you think this will go and when you think they could potentially finally get a handle on it? >> i think everyone will take a deep sigh of relief and a deep breath this next week. forecast was five -- 10 miles an hour on monday, tuesday definitely if we can maintain containment over the weekend monday it will look pretty good. if we lose containment we will definitely have to continue to battle it back and protect property and life. and so you are seeing that first hand and we appreciate you letting us walk through it with you to let us get the word out of it was still need. eric: of course people around the country if you're not there exactly it's almost unimaginable to try and see that and see the devastation after words.

it is a great thing. it is a great way to fulfill our moral obligation by grounding our nation's heroes the right to life and that is what it has been for our organization for over a decade is making sure that effort like this is taking place. but we have a long way to go. there is a long way ahead for these millions of veterans that have been impacted including my husband. captain leroy torres. arthel: i'm sorry you're going through that as well personally but i know that is why you do such a great job in this role. and colonel over to you now. give us an idea of the kind of healthcare are veterans are need of? >> a well it is a vast majority of veterans need healthcare at every level. we are talking approximately 3.5 million veterans that will be eligible for this healthcare that have been exposed to toxic chemicals and substances.

many of these problems have been going on for decades for them and have involved their children. and the generational problem. this is important news for the veterans in our country. it is important that we realize it is a huge hurdle there is a backlog of about 378,000 claims. so now we are going to add millions to that. we are going to have to work collaboratively to address the issue. arthel: i want to take a look at performance on benefits purchased through the last month. over 1 million claims nearly 800,000 of those claims were approved a 75-point to percent took an average of 162 days to process those claims. rosie come as you know navigating healthcare is not the easiest thing. will you and others access the various systems they are now eligible for?

>> yes absolutely. what i can say is we -- their screenings and new opportunities to veterans access healthcare. what we don't have is a specialized healthcare pathway that we have always advocated for similar to the 9/11 world 9d trade center health program. they are presenting with with very rare lung diseases and cancers technology like 4d and all these other great companies that are at the forefront of this issue including a burn pit 360. we will absolutely continue to advocate for the right to life of these veterans. although we are grateful for the effort they are now expanding the healthcare option. we need to do more. veterans didn't specialize healthcare. they need screening tools in place. >> i hear you i do want to
