administration. i'm going to say president biden surpassed expectations. how did he do that? if you are ranking him against other leaders and other politicians and other speeches, that is not what people are doing. they are ranking him against himself. by that metric, he did better than the lowest standard possible, his own confidence. he's grading on a curve of his own performances. like being relieved your car starts in the morning when it didn't start for a year. i can't believe it started. talk about energy, there's good and bad energy and dark energy and there is energy that masquerades as substance and i think that's what you saw there but it forces you to ask which candidate in which party is the one that is out for revenge. we kept -- trump is going to be out for revenge, trump is being sued by everybody and seems to be having a good time on x, he seems pretty happy.

on the other hand, you have an angry, fiery ball of spite, sound incredibly vengeful and another example of this projection where they accuse you of who they are or perhaps because they have become so possessed by derangement that they become the thing they claim to hate which i think is happening here. he went after the supreme court. he attacks his predecessor and by connection his supporters but overall for me you've got to step back and see how mundane and futile this phony seriousness is. one side will cherry pick the moments of clarity, got a good line there and the rest of us will focus on the rapidfire incoherence, the flailing gibberish that somehow everybody else avoids but all this behavior is born from these ancient tribes, the sweaty desperation of grown men

on the sides of the aisle trying to get a selfy. no one wants to see those pictures. you are not that attractive. it becomes this irrelevant tribal theater which is why trump was so weird. he came from a world of entertainment, of sales, and he stood out from that phoniness which is what was such a surprise, didn't sink into this fakery and it drove them crazy. now when you take him out of that, this is what you are left with, this game of political pickle ball where they bounce back and forth to each other and it is all the same, sit down robotically, i found it tiresome. i always have. this was even worse. jeanine: i always loved watching the state of the union because i feel american, we are unified, don't care if it is

democrat or republican. i want to cheer them on because it makes me feel good about being an american. you've seen a lot of these state of the unions. what was your take on it? >> he started with ukraine and the standoff on the hill, normally we are here, we are americans, we can work together, you feel like that is the opening message but the fact that he went at one of these big issues into foreign policy and combat of, calling them out, seems an odd place to start. the white house was messaging to us that there was going to be a unity agenda where people could come together. it didn't feel that way, the latest polling when people asked how he did in unifying the country 26% said 69%, mostly fail. that's across party lines. people do not think he's bringing people together, the speech that in an election year is going to feel more political didn't feel unifying.
2:08 pm
jeanine: instead of talking about the state of our union it was like a battleground campaign speech for 2024. jesse: his opening was framing himself as fdr and lincoln. president biden is going to fight to save democracy at home and abroad, against hitler, vladimir putin, the southern insurrectionist and donald trump. this election, he is saying, is the equivalent of the civil war and world war ii combined and he is the only one that's going to be able to protect the nation and put it in these militaristic terms like this is a military campaign, not a regular political campaign and goes on to say he swore an oath to protect the country against enemies foreign and domestic. trump republicans, enemies of the state, people looking around, this is what this

election is about and so that was there as well as the screaming to prove he was alive, to show he had something left in the tank and i don't really believe he got there on his own but the rest of it was red meat for the base. abortion, government tax and spend liberalism and class warfare. you get through that and you expect him to acknowledge the hardships americans were facing. he didn't do that. it is all spin. a few lines, a of volleys which is good but didn't generate any unity moment, they were adequate, no one buzzing about the guests he brought. look at these other speeches and get the chills. soaring oratory talking about the future of the country, the american people and ways they are moving.

with. trump was way ahead on that. that was up 17 points from before the speech began. starting with ukraine, also surprised me. it felt like he wanted to start talking about attacks on democracy at home. they thought let's contextualize it more broadly to talk about democracies that are under attack and put republicans on the back foot. we saw mike johnson, really struggling with his facial expressions, what do i do with my hands, he wants the money for ukraine, the rest of his caucus is not letting him do that. that's where that came from but they are paying attention to their internal polling and the conversations americans are having about how important the everyday bread and butter issues are. protecting social security, lowering prescription drug prices. let's give teachers a raise. let's make sure kids know how to read by third grade.
