my angle in moments. first, we go live to the site of the baltimore bridge clasp where a search and rescue mission is still underway. joining us now fox news senior national correspondent kevin corke. kevin, what can you tell us? >> laura, first things first, the fbi tells us tonight they have seen no evidence to suggest that there was any foul play by way of terrorism involved in this tragedy here: however, in search and rescue is ongoing and incredibly, incredibly long odds as we show you live pictures here. we are talking about frigid waters last night. six people still missing. belonging to a construction crew. of course, that owing to that clasp thanks to the cargo ship hitting the bridge the francis scott key bridge leading to the clasp and likely, sadly, the death of at least six and possibly many, many more; however, the governor has been here. part of a sizeable cadre, laura of state and federal lawmakers here on hand to a person vowing to work quickly to restore not

just the bridge but the entire waterway. >> it's urgent. in my conversation with president biden, he has promised to do everything that he can at the federal level to expedite to get that channel reopened. every day as millions and millions of dollars lost and payroll alone is a couple million dollars lost. thousands of workers depend upon the port of baltimore being open. >> indeed, lots of people depend on this port and it is a massive point of commerce. as you know, laura, being in this area, i should also point this out. there was one person who had been hospitalized. they have since been released. we can tell you about that tonight. meantime the search and rescue continues, laura? >> laura: kevin, the waters there are frigid, as you said, you know, in the 40's. i know there has been some conversation in this terribly as tragic as this is, how long someone could survive in this. are you hearing anything in the way of potentially positive news all these hours later?

>> nothing in that respect. i mean, i'm trying to be as hopeful and you heard lawmakers today, laura, saying as much. they are defiant in their belief that, listen, a miracle could happen here. we certainly all want that. but to be completely candid, i have covered many stories like this where you are talking about extremely cold temperatures in the water. it would be incredible if anyone were able to survive that, laura. >> laura: kevin, thank you so much. all right. why trust matters. that's the focus of tonight's angle. >> everything so far indicates that this was a terrible accident. at this time we have no other indication, no other reason to believe there was any intentional act here. >> the preliminary investigation points to an accident. we haven't seen any credible evidence of a terrorist attack. >> as kevin just referenced, that's what everyone is saying but why is it that so many americans following this

collapse believe that the biden team isn't telling us the whole truth. axios bemoaning the situation writing that misinformation runs rampant after baltimore bridge clasp. collapse. theories hostile actors. questions about economic terrorism and even wilder speculation, i won't go into tonight, but these ideas don't spring out of nowhere. they grow and they fester in situations where either the facts are hard to square with reality or where those in charge themselves have proven to be not credible. it's all about trust. even axios had to concede that social media companies continue to be haunted by their handling of the hunter biden laptop controversy and the covid-19 lab leak theory, which contributed to widespread discuss among widg conservatives. we have got say this there are obviously extremely dedicated people who work in all these agencies that are helping try to

solve this situation there. but, when trust is repeatedly broken, it shouldn't surprise anyone that during a crisis our leaders' explanations and assurances, as much as we want them, sometimes don't carry much weight. now, here's the problem. it's not x or twitter's fault. it's not elon musk. it's not the searches they have to placate here. the problem is we have a d.c. establishment that has been wrong or misleading on issue after issue. remember, they dismissed renowned experts not just on covid's origins, the lab leak theory or hunter's laptop but on legality the virus' legality, on masks, whether school closures were necessary and then the biden administration flipped off concerns about that chinese balloon it. seems like for ages d they did that claimed it was a problem. only later did we learn the truth. it was a spy balloon and china

was gathering sensitive data and sending it back to beijing all along. and, of course, we have seen government agencies repeatedly turned into political weapons used again against not only trump but other conservatives, including even traditional catholics. now, we all remember what they did in the 2016 election, in the phony russian collusion investigation. but let's not forget that just last year, how after january 6th we found out the fbi abused its powers. as the hill reported thousands of violations of section 702 of the foreign allows the federal government collect communications between certain targeted foreign individuals outside the u.s. this year the ninth circuit unanimously ruled that the finn illegally seized millions of dollars in cash from safe deposit boxes plus a mix of

jewelry, personal effects and documents such as wills and prenuptial agreements. the court agreed with defendants arguments that did not abide by the search warrant. >> jenny like hundreds of others kept her valuables here inside what was a private vault beverly hills. >> when she arrived last year to check her box, all she saw was this notice the fbi had taken everything. >> the fbi and it seems like they literally have a plan to steal like 80 something would. >> 85 million to be exact. seized from 700 safety deposit boxes. >> laura: of course, there is the other issue of basic competency in leadership. no on earth breathe that pete buttigieg the mayor of south bend got his job at dot because he was the most talented person out there in managing what is a

complex department of transportation issues all of them are complicated. he checked a very important box the same is true trout biden's cabinet nonetheless given the slow footed reaction to the east palestine, ohio train derailment, the skepticism out there is not unjustified. now, i can tell you after having worked for jim burnly during his time as secretary of transportation. he will join us next segment there was never any doubt that he was the best man to be the secretary of transportation. because back then, in the 1980s, diversity wasn't the ruling ethos. but in bidenville, you bet. it's literally all that matters. this is a cabinet that i promised you and fulfilled that promise looks like america.

historic cabinet. this will be the first cabinet ever that is evenly composed with as many women as men in the cabinet. this will be the first cabinet ever with a majority of people of color occupying this cabinet. >> laura: okay. but today is a day that we need to believe in our government. we need to believe our government has both supreme competence in its top officials and unassailable integrity. we need to fully investigate why this happened. we need to prevent it from happening ever again we need to try to minimize the economic impact and rebuild as quickly as possible both of the administration's obsession with virtue signaling and weaponization of government agencies has been poisonous to public trust. now many years ago kids were taught the story of the boy who cried wolf. i'm sure you were taught it. and we are supposed to take away

the lessen that lie something a mistake because the time will come when you need people to believe that you're telling them the truth. turns out many of our leaders never learn this lesson and now, no matter what they say, no matter how credible they may want to seem, huge portions of the country won't believe them. and when they wonder why this is, they should look in the mirror and that's the angle. joining us now is missouri senator eric schmitt who serves on the city commerce, science and transportation committee. senator, is there anything the administration can do at this point to make most americans trust both their explanations and their handling of what is a nightmare for the united states with this bridge clasp? >> well, i think the first thing is to make sure that the families of those who are missing know that all of america is pulling for them and praying for them right now.

it's a tragic accident. and something that i know we are all -- this is something that should pull us together and you need leaders who are focused on that. and my hope is that we would come together republican and democrat to make sure we are doing everything we can to support those families and get the people of baltimore and commerce up and moving again. right? this is a very important port. to your point, the problem here this is the consequence the distrust of terrible leadership when you have an administration that has weaponized the department of justice. tried to throw political opponents in jail. tried to throw them off the ballot. conducted a vast censorship enterprise to silence americans who don't buy into americans whether it was on efficacy of masks or transmiivelgt of covid after have you had the vaccine or the hunter biden laptop, i mean, time and time again, laura, these folks are viewed half the country as the enemy and they are willing to try to violence them under any means necessary. and we're right to be distrustful of this administration because of their past actions.

and with one more point here, they keep screaming about these threats to democracy. this administration has done more to undermine's people's trust in quote unquote democracy in our constitutional republican than any administration. you had a federal judge saying this is orwellian, this censorship they engaged in. look, these agencies need to step up and stop worrying about these woke checklists because the american people care about safety, not this virtue signaling they continue to see from this administration. >> they should worry less about threats to democracy. first of all they are the ones threaten democracy and worry about threats to our infrastructure. we are going to get more of that with chad wolf coming up, the national security potential implications for that but today at a press conference, senator, secretary buttigieg was asked a question about a pattern forming. watch. >> several bridge clasps collapr the past couple of years. that bridge fell very quickly.

how concerned should americans be. >> i do not know of a bridge that has been constructed to withstand a direct impact of a vessel of this size. any time anything happens to any bridge we as a country take that and learn from that. >> laura: that was kind of a flippant answer there, senator. i'm not sure is he a structural engineer. but, a bit of deflection, given, again, how could he this bridge and this port is to the entire economy of the northeast of the united states. critical. >> yeah. and other department heads and refuses. to say he spent most of his time talking about racist roads or environmental justice or dei trainings. and this is all happening sort of under his watch. he didn't show up at east palestine because i don't know why. but the fact of the matter is. >> laura: he got there late. >> we are not building

semiconductor facilities because they can't find enough ex-con convicts to hire under the drirt. not laying enough broadband under the commerce environment subcontractors haven't submitted climate action plans. they are pushing ev mandates which is hollowing out our middle class and people losing jobs going to china. so, again, a misalignment of priorities from this administration. so, when they come, you know, today to talk about safety, it's hard for people to take them seriously because that's just not been their priority. it's been, again, this sort of woke agenda over the nuts and bolts of what their jobs are actually supposed to be. >> laura: senator, this is a tragic situation. human loss of life of course the economic damage. we need competence and we need a belief in the basic functionality of the united states government. and that's why trust matters. senator, thank you. all right, so did today's bridge collapse expose critical vulnerabilities in our infrastructure. we're going to examine that next.

podium where this moments the coast guard is set to give update on baltimore bridge collapse. we will give to you as soon as they come out. first, within hours of that cargo ship collision with the baltimore key bridge. officials were already trying to control how it was all being reported. >> i'm going to be the first to ask that cnn and everyone else stop showing the video because it just traumatizing our community. >> >> laura: okay. well, reporters were told that the time was not right to press for answers about how this could have happened. >> the investigation is still underway. all of that can wait. right now, this is about the lives of those individuals that we are searching for and nothing else. everything else. >> laura: well, they do a lot at the same time. they search and they also probe for the cause of what will go down as probably the worst, absolute worst accident involving a bridge in our entire

country's history. they can walk and chew gum at the same time. honoring the missing and feared dead would also be accomplished by expeditiously answering questions about possible human error. engineering flaws. safety and construction. americans need to know how we can protect other bridges across the country. and perhaps, most important, what does this tell us about what our enemies might think about the vulnerabilities of our key infrastructure? joining me now chad wolf, former acting dhs secretary under trump and jim burnley former transportation secretary under president reagan and my former boss. good to see both of you. now, we're told this was a freak accident, chad, but i always thought bridges were hard targets. the force of this ship didn't seem so hard to collapse. >> yeah. unfortunately i think that's right. and, look, i think this is a tragic incident. i have not heard or seen anything that says otherwise. so let me just say that upfront. i think what this does point to is the nation's critical

infrastructure and how vulnerability it can be and so you not only look at everything from healthcare systems, to not only our transportation system, our artillery systems. and look at the risk. you look at the vulnerability but you also look at the critical cattle this bridge being in the i-59 corridor obviously serving the port of baltimore. hazardous materials being transported you must look at the criticality. make sure resilience is built into it as well. there is a a lot of lessons to be learned here. and a lot of questions that need to be answered. >> laura: jim, you were the transportation secretary like a golden age of that department, in my view and i'm not saying it in a biased passion. you were an expert on so many things. tell us what happens next or what should happen next in this mess of a situation involving a

critical port? >> well, laura, first, let me mention the six apparent fatalities, apparently all highway maintenance workers. that's one of the most dangerous and under appreciated jobs in america. >> laura: you bet. >> usually it's motoristst that threaten them and in this case a bridge comes down. the way this should proceed and i expect it will proceed is the investigation will be led by what i believe is the most credible agency in the united states government national transportation safety board. is bipartisan. in fact most recent appointee was chief of staff at dot during the trump administration it has highly esteemed group of subject matter experts. it will call on the various federal agencies at dot, at dhs,

the army corps of engineers in this case will be involved it will probably take quite a few months before they get the bottom line conclusions. but that's where we should all be focused on that agency and what it concludes and it will make recommendations and i hope both the executive branch and congress will take very seriously. whatever they are. >> laura: less than two month ago christopher wray warned congress that china is studying and targeting our infrastructure. watch this. there has been far too little public focus on the fact that prc hackers are targeting our critical infrastructure. china's hackers are positioning on american infrastructure in preparation to wreak havoc and cause real world harm to american citizens and communities if and when china

decides the time has come to strike. >> laura: chad, that's chilling. i forgot that he had said that until we were getting ready for the show. again, we don't have any conclusion as to what happened here, likely an accident. but, nevertheless, are we taking that warning seriously enough in the united states? >> i don't care we are. what we know is we have seen not only chinese but russian north korean and other hackers looking and targeting our critical infrastructure. we have seen it our utility systems and i believe just this week we have had the department of justice not only sanction but indict chinese hackers looking at trying to steal information ♪ >> laura: all right. the coast guard stepping out now to give us the latest update on the bridge collapse. >> maryland state police. tonight we're going to hear from a statement from each of them on current updates. and after that we will be able to take a few questions. but we do need to keep it brief

because we want to get these folks back to work. with that i would like to interview rear admiral shannon. >> good evening, everyone. first, i would like to say thank you to all of the first responders that have come out to assist in looking for these individuals. we have this tremendous support across the state and county and city and federal enterprise. you have seen for yourself the helicopters flying over. the small boats that are out there. the coast guard cutter that's out there. the boats going back and forth bringing people out search for these individuals. so, thank you to those -- this entire community for helping in that regard. second, i want to say thank you to the community for the outpouring of support to those first responders. and in particularly the outpouring of support and prayers and support for the families of the six individuals i would like announce tonight that based on the length of time that we have gone in this search, the extensive search efforts that we have put into

it, the water temperature, that at this point we do not believe that we're going to find any of these individuals still alive. so this evening, at about 7:30, we are going to suspend the active search and rescue efforts. the coast guard is not going away. none of our partners is going away. but we're just going to transition to a different phase. i will turn it over to colonel butler, please. >> good evening and thank you all for being here to echo the admiral's comments here we really appreciate the support from the community, to all first responders here. we appreciate your patience in allowing us to do the best job possible and give you information as it comes up. at this point, as the admiral said, we're going away from the search and rescue portion to a recovery operation. the changing conditions out there have made it dangerous for the first responders. the divers in the water. we will still have surface ships out overnight at 0600 hours

tomorrow we are hoping to put divers in the water and begin a more detailed search to do our very best to recover those six missing people. >> thank you, with that we have time for just a few questions. we know there's a lot of questions that still have to be answered and we do have time for just a few. so, if we could take a few, please. >> do we think it's just still 6, maybe other cars on the bridge? >> all the information we have is that there are six individuals, yes, sir. >> can you go into detail about how difficult this might be for the recovery phase of this now? like what kind of challenges are you under? >> well, i will start by saying i'm going to turn it over to the experts on diving. i'm not an expert on diving, but we have got very difficult water temperatures. you have structures from the bridge that are in the water that can move with the tides and currents. making that dangerous for divers

and people in the water to actually try to do recovery. and we do not want to jury any of these first responders in this recovery effort we want to be as safe as possible for everyone involved in. this i will see in the colonel has anything he can add. >> can you go into specifics about what the search and rescue entailed? like were there scuba divers or was everything above water? sonar? any sort of equipment that might have been utilized over the past 12 hours? >> from the outset, we moved all those resources in with dive teams from various state, local, and county agencies. we also used sonar. we are doing our very best in some very difficult times and difficult conditions, which is why we are making that transition now, the last thing we want to do is put divers in the water with changing currents, low temperatures, very poor visibility and so everywhere metal and other

unknown objects in the water. all it takes is one object to strike an individual and all of the sudden we have a first responder trying to recover another first responder. i think at 0600 we will find ourself in a better position to understand the dynamics of what we are doing with and to address the issue in a much safer manner. >> do the authorities have six ids now and have those six been contacted? those families? >> i can't speak on that. that's still in the investigative portion of this. [inaudible question] >> all of that is unknown at this point and as i said, we have to cease operations. we can't start again until we can assure the safety of those divers and the rescue personnel that are going to participate in this. if we look at how challenging it

is at a simple motor vehicle crash to extract an individual, i'm sure we can all imagine how much harder it is to do it inclement weather, when it's cold, under the water, with very limited to know visibility. >> just to clarify no remains have been removed thus far by search and rescue other than the two you rescued. >> that is correct. >> so, colonel, you are confident then that no other vehicles made it on to that bridge before the collapse or as it was collapsing, i should say? >> >> based upon the fact the original information that was provided the maryland transportation authority police department was able to shut down traffic. is there the possibility that there was another vehicle on there other than those vehicles involved in the construction? process, i think we all would have to understand yes, that's a distinct possibility. as unfortunate as it may be taps a distinct possibility. however we don't have any information to support that at this point.

ma'am? >> bring the d divers out do yoe any idea [inaudible] how long recovery effort? >> we do not know at this point. i'm sure as you have seen some of the aerial photos, there is a tremendous amount of debris in the water from containers hanging off ships. we have to make sure those are shored up. we are going to work with structural engineers to help them understand how to navigate and address the challenges of having bridge structure in the water that may be sharp that could puncture a suit that could puncture an airline. all of these things that we must take our time with. >> this is the last question by the way. >> i'm sorry? [inaudible question] >> at this point, we do not know where they are. but we intend to give it our best effort to help these families find closure. >> inclement weather tomorrow impact the recovery effort? >> very clearly it could but we're going to do everything in

our power to help these families find closure. >> how stable has the boat been. >> how do we get name, title, spelling? >> folks we will be establishing a unified command as well as a joint communication center. i know there is a lot of questions. we will problem he vigd that information where we will continue to provide updates. but that is the extent of our update tonight. we thank you all for coming. >> laura: we return to former transportation secretary jim burnley and former acting director of dhs chad wolf we see the bridge with you we forget what is under the bridge and in the water. that's just terrifying and it makes you respect and love these individuals and honor them along with those who lost their lives even more so when you really think about it. >> yes. it does they are obviously

extraordinary people who will go into the water knowing it's full of unknown dangers but real dangers and a lot of them when you have had a catastrophe like this. we're blessed to have such people among us. >> laura: chad, the loss of this port, for whatever amount of time is lost, is being described as devastating to part of the u.s. economy. how critical is it for us to be able to redirect traffic and that's complicated in a situation like this given now on the economic toll of this disaster? >> a lot of things to at play not only the port but the bridge and thoroughfare and artery that it has there connecting i-95 and elements along that eastern seaboard. when we talk about economic security. economic security is national security at the end of the day because as powerful as we are as a country and as a nation, it's

because of our economy and how it's, you know, it's number one across the world. and that provides national security for us. so, when we have a port like this, that's going to impact not only supply chains and logistics and things of that nature, also probably going to have a significant impact for the city of baltimore as well. i think that's something we are really going to need to take a look at how quickly you can get that port back up and running and get the arteries back up and running because i think this is going to be a significant loss from not only from a transportation perspective but, again from, that supply chain perspective as well. >> laura: and, jim, again, given the impact on the population of baltimore. the port of baltimore, the employees at that port. i mean, this is, again, why people reagan understood that peace comes through strength and he meant economic strength. being $34 trillion in debt and both parties are responsible here, we need money for a rainy

day. but we're going to have to go further into debt to pay for this. that will happen, obviously. there are federal funds set aside for mcs but nobody can put a number on what this will ultimately cost. and the economic costs come from two different dimensions of it, i think. one as chad just mentioned, ports are obviously going to be shut down until the bridge debris can be cleared away. the other impact is that we have now got a very substantial problem with interstate 95 which is a critical artery up and down the entire u.s. east coast. and we have now lost a key part of that. and, particularly, any truck carrying hazmat really does not have a good alternative at this point. those trucks are all going to have to go many miles out of the way. because they cannot go through

going on. i put this somewhere in between a harvey weinstein and an r. kelly type of case. so, i think that the criminal aspects are something that have to be deeply investigated. >> laura: joining me now mark eiglarsh former defense attorney and criminal prosecutor that video from tmz is quite something. you could see all of his clothes drawers. bathroom. clothes everything all over the floor turned upside down. do you expect him to be named as a target given what you are seeing here? >> well, they haven't said that he is one but they are doing a heck of a job impersonating a group of people who are considering him a target. it's rare that you go to a judge, establish probable cause, get the judge to sign off on searches of two of his homes they obviously did exhaustive

who are being trafficked outside of the country, would that apply both ways to have dhs involved, mark? >> there is that and there is a number of other scenarios that we just don't know. i have seen many cases in my career that involved numerous different and some of them kind of reaching to charges sex trafficking. so, you know, it's a very wide net. >> laura: mark, a lot of people don't realize that sex trafficking, he they think it y happens at the border or hollywood scenarios like this. but this has reached every socioeconomic part of the united states. it is widespread. some describe it as epidemic. i don't think that's inaccurate. >> i agree with you. crimes become more targeted by law enforcement. they have limited resources. they have to turn their attention to something. you know, it was just say no. drug traffickers more during certain decade. now, fortunately they are going

preteens, young teens what about that the first amendment should say anything goes. what about those efforts? >> as a father of two college-aged daughters they are in the danger zone in some respect but they are, thank god, through some of the danger zone of high school, middle school, i fear for parents and grandparents who have kids and grandkids in these vulnerable ages. i absolutely support those laws. we support those laws. parents need to know what their kids are looking at on social media. you know, they are the parents. they are not your friends. you should be -- parents should be in there knowing. have open conversations with your kid. kids, if someone is asking you to do anything, grooming you, exploiting you online, tell someone. tell a parent, tell law enforcement what these traffickers want is to get some compromises images of you on the media and you don't say anything and then you are in their grips, you are in their grasp. >> laura: i have three teenagers. it is absolutely terrifying, matt. thank you very much. all right. just how great is biden's
