anything. i find that amazing. shannon: republican republican and during a fiery house hearing on wednesday lawmakers grilling doctor david you see is it former top advisor to doctor anthony couch after releasing several of his e-mails that seem to reveal alarming covid era communications we are back of the panel let me put a couple of these up so people know what we are talking about here but one of the e-mails comes from his gmail it says we've got to be careful i learnt from our foia lady that's freedom of information act lady here how to make e-mails and disappear after i am avoided but before the search starts i think we are also a plus i delete a post those earlier e-mails after sending them to gmail. here's another e-mail produced by the house committee saying this, i learned the tricks lasted from an old friend, mark moore who heads our foia office and he also hates foia's. soap molly, the person is supposed to make you comply with
11:47 pm
transparent communications according to these e-mails looks like was telling them how to get around it. >> invite looks like that from these e-mails which show what a permanent unelected bureaucracy can do can control information nbc and control so much of what happens here it is also important we not forget what these e-mails were about. they were about how we were finding some of the work that was happening in china that related to covid and suppressing any discussion of the origins of covid. that's a very serious issue. the delays we have had in getting information lately could not hold china fully accountable for what is going on here. it really showed in some these e-mails criminal behavior by some of our own people. shannon: how concerned are you, david, about the national security and foreign relations implication with china and beyond? >> i am. first about this is shameful foia is a federal accident. you can be convicted of a crime for violating it and he is just speaking openly about how he is going around for yet.
11:48 pm
i also agree with molly the substance of what is potentially hiding is about whether or not china reacted appropriately when it discovered the virus and whether china is at fault for its safety measures in this virology lab. i do not think covid is going to be on the balance in 2024. however, the one thing that american people deserve to know is whether china acted appropriately. if they didn't that needs to be disclosed to everyone so china doesn't do this in the future. shannon: the american funding stream part is what they'd like to know that as well. doctor lawrence his confronted with these e-mails here is his explanation. >> some of the e-mails i have seen that you all have provided look pretty incriminating. don't remember them but it looks like i made a mistake on more than one occasion. it certainly was not my intention to do that. shannon: to the question of intention it seems like he is think this is how to get around foia or some is told he had to
11:49 pm
do a big box assembly he was bent and foia request as a journalist it is a frustrating process. it takes a really long time it is hard to believe the rules of foia. in some ways reading some these e-mails was confirming to me that they do not always take it seriously and there are ways to get around that it is frustrating. seeing both republicans and democrats criticize over these e-mails was notable. we so rarely see bipartisan agreement on issues like this it is about the subject matter and foia exists to allow journalists and the public to understand how the government is working but it is clear evidence. it appears very clear they are at least joking about getting around it which is not appropriate and potentially actually preventing. shannon: for any of us who filed a foia request you get it back it's all blacked out with everything but one sentence is a frustrating process because it looks incriminating because it
11:50 pm
is incriminating. my force line favorite line when they said by the way tony and i, fascia, just got a huge freedom of information regarding wuhan institute. the irony here is the government now acknowledges there is at least a very good chance this didn't originate in that chinese lab put in oth. in other words the deep dark secret he was trying to keep now everybody's change their position on. many people change their position for it. shannon: yes they have they have hearings like this it would to a lot of people it was a time for all of us a move went to bed past that there are some lawmakers on the hill feel are questions that need to be answered lawmakers working on a buy person when something else the issue of americans being held in turks and caicos. the first one, brian came home last night but maybe it's friday night in pittsburgh. this was the scene as he was reunited with his kids i have got to admit come david want to watch as the first time very teary-eyed. we still have three americans and who under their laws are
11:51 pm
being held for violation of the slots were trying to get them home. >> moving video i am glad is been released at the state department worked very hard to get him released. what is at issue here we go to a foreign country to comply with the laws he should not be treated worse than citizens but you should not be treated better either. what happened here is turks and caicos has very strict gun laws in part because i want to attract tourists it does not want crime it does not want americans if you're going to the caribbean because of crime. but unfortunately he's caught up in this he did despite mistake he did had some ammunition that can happen especially if you are in a hunter. it was resolved appropriately he was sentenced but suspended sentence allowed into the hole hopefully the other three will be coming home soon as well. shannon: quickly, some folks don't think the state worked hard up of got one home and the others are promising because the united states has some authority here and some influence i do think people wish it could've been applied sooner this man was facing what was it 12 years?
11:52 pm
shannon: a minimum 12 years in jail for. >> you have to respect these laws and have common sense we did not see that here. >> i fail to understand why anybody would show up with ammunition in their baggage. they must denote this is illegal under the laws it is a sovereign nation we cannot tell them what to do but i think it's very encouraging sign this one and gentleman was able to return i hope and expect to see the other americans home soon. >> that woman they're probably grabbed a bag did not realize there is a bullet that he got caught in the lining of a bag or something. there's a lot of explanations we will see whether she gets the same level of deference. >> we know lawmakers on both side of the aisle also visited kirks and pushing and raising awareness and to points made turks and caicos has an incentive to release these americans and show they are willing to work with our government and encourage american tourism. shannon: owes earlier this year it's a beautiful non- lunch a quadruple check anything i take with my next trip or a panel, think of a much will see you next sunday up next very

shannon: eight live look at arlington, virginia thousands of bikers prepared to take part in rolling to remember. participants from across the country gather at the pentagon nearby they will ride to the mall area and washington to honor veterans and those missing in action, presents as a board as well first lieutenant travis was killed protecting his fellow marines in an ambush in iraq in 2007 his courageous actions let every other member of his patrol to survive that day. the travis manion foundation was started to honor his service to bring together thousands of veterans and families of fallen heroes. each year on memorial day the foundation has its honors project volunteers across the country pause, reflect and honor those who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty i sat down with travis' sister ryan manion ceo of the travis manion foundation to check what the mission and expansion of this year's honor projects it is out this week's sunday special. let's talk memorial day is one

of those reminders as your foundation is focused on your brother, the sacrifice he made you have spread that to touch so many other people and families. and for people who cannot visit the grave sites of their love and say it here at arlington national cemetery or other places you have the honor project. tell us about that because the honor project started out one young woman, emily who during covid start visiting gravesites and people started tweeting her saying could you visit my grandfather question what could you visit my brother? whatever it was so she ended up on that date visited hundreds of gravesites. she came to us and said listen, this is something i think we could really expand so the travis manion foundation foundation to cover her original initiative with corned at the honor project and to date we have 46 cemeteries that are participating where volunteers can go and pay tribute to our fallen service members. families know that their loved

ones are being visited on memorial day. shannon: that's a beautiful thing there's a lot of reasons they may not be able to travel for finance, health, distance, whatever it is have you been surprised asking for this has grown since emily had the first idea during covid? was i don't think i am surprised i think for a long time people have been looking for a way. it's always sweet drive don't forget what memorial day is about. there's not a lot of tangible things we can do as americans to honor that. and so for us we gave an opportunity for families to bring their kids to teach the next generation, this is what memorial day means so take them out to the cemetery in the morning and enjoy the pool in the afternoon. and then as a gold star sister at myself i will not be at arlington on monday i know somebody's going to walk up to my brothers gravestone and say his name and he is going to be remembered in that way and is a gold star sister at that means everything.
11:59 pm
shannon: what does this mean to a loved one tuneup they cannot physically be there that someone is going to say that name and a member that person? quick site always say it for me, i remember memorial day weekend so my brother was here. we were doing the things that all of us enjoy so much we were at the beach. we were with family, having parties, kicking up the unofficial beginning of summer. but today i recognize all of those summers and memorial day weekend' i had the opportunity o do that because of the men and women have given their lives in service for our country. i think we have an obligation as americans to take a one moment out of that entire weekend and understand why at the weekend exists if you can't show up at an honor project location, go online and learn the story of a fallen servicemember. as you are cracking open a beer at the pool with your friends and family, share that story with your neighbor and make sure
12:00 am
these stories and the stories of my brother and all the men and women have died in service to our country that their names live on. shannon: thank you so much. you can find out a lot more information and offer to help with phone by visiting travis manion foundation.org it's not too late for memorial day at my podcast within the dream drops this week ice that now tracy poss journalist education advocate who says the report cards you are getting it right now, they are not actually telling to the full story about how your kids are doing. we talked about the questions you should be asking. living in the bremen anyway like your podcast great thank you for joining us i am shannon bream. remember how blessed we are this memorial day weekend we will see you next sunday. big weekend show."
