>> ainsley: the childcare industry suffering massive shortages and pushing military families to the breaking point. 9,000 children are reportedly on the wait list for military-run childcare centers. our next guest even says she was forced to spend 70% of her salary on childcare so she could attend a training. army major erin williams joins us now. you have three children. tell me your situation and how the childcare problem has affected you. >> sure. my family, my husband and i had our first child in 2016 and since then we've moved to five different duty stations so one move about every 18 months and it has just been very, very challenging to find affordable childcare and secure place in the childcare centers and with private childcare providers everywhere we've gone. part of it is the nationwide

crisis, but also just the cost of childcare at different duty locations and also the amount of time it can take to sit on wait lists. sometimes exceeds the amount of time that military families will spend at a specific duty station. >> ainsley: on each base they have military child development centers, those are full and there are wait lists? >> they are full at many places, yes. they are offer incredible high-quality care and used them at four different duty stations and had great experiences but because of the model they use and how the wait lists work you don't know if you have a spot in the day-care center at the earliest 30 days before you need childcare, which doesn't leave you with a lot of reaction time. >> ainsley: how stressful is that? many military families one sfous spouse -- spouse is serving

overseas. >> it is the top thing i stress about in my life. my husband and i both serve. this year he is deployed so it has been on me to figure out the childcare piece for our three kids and i'm very lucky. i found something that's working for our situation and also very lucky i'm farther along in my career that i can afford options not available to every service member. >> ainsley: 30 seconds left in the show. what can we do about it? i know congress are proposing some legislation to help. >> i would love to see us break down some of the red tape and barriers to access for the different programs that offer and subsidize military childcare. the cost of living can change wildly based on where you live and duty requirements can also change a lot in terms of not fitting into traditional childcare times. if we can make it easier for families to access it, it would be a huge win for us
