freedom and freedom means, you know, true meaning of life. you can almost do anything without worrying about the severity of yourself unlike other countries you don't have to wonder whether you are going to live throughout the day and freedom to me means don't lose my life or choose my own future. i know our freedom did not come easy veterans fought for freedom lost their lives for us and we should be grateful for that. >> carley: you say that you hope americans will take break from barbecues and tell the kids about the importance of independence day. you are so right about that enes. it is so important to talk to the next generation about why we should love our ken tri. >> i feel like the younger generation is taking our freedom for granted. i wish i could show these

teenagers how tough the life can get when you don't have freedom. other kids around the world will do literally anything to have freedom that we have in this country. you know, maybe they need to get out of their comfort zone and have a conversation with another teenager who places out there like iran, china, russia, turkey, or some of these dictatorships and they have a better understanding of what freedom is. you know, also taking our freedom for granted can lead to a lack of appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who fought for it it's important to remember that free disom not guaranteed and needs to be actively protected. without any freedom we won't have any ability to express ourselves and make our own choices. and live our lives according to our beliefs and values. so we should not take our freedom for granted.

>> carley: some of the most patriotic people and i would certainly put you in that category people born in other countries they have perspective and they know what it was like to live somewhere other than the united states. so, tell us about what it was like during your childhood in turkey and what your family is going through right now. >> you know, it was tough. we did not have any freedom. there is no freedom of, you know, freedom of speech. freedom of religion. freedom of, you know, expression. and just because of, you know, you could decide the government or president, you and your family members will be in jail and tortured. so, i remember, you know, one day i walked in a locker room, when i was playing for the nba, and all of my teammates were criticizing america and calling it trash and they were saying oh my god, we have it so bad in this country. i wish we can move. i remember i was like listen,

guys, our season is about to be over. whenever our season is over, let me bit you a first class ticket and go to some of these countries out there. you guys will see the real dictatorship. and you guys will see how important that freedom is. unfortunately, they have no idea because they never lived in a place where, you know, where there was a real dictatorship. so, i just hope that, you know, all the parents, please, you know, take a break from your barbecue and tell your kids about the importance of independence day and why freedom is so fragile and matters more than anything for this country. just like you said i grew up in a place where kids don't know what freedom is. and i strongly encourage american parents to teach the importance of freedom and why is it so impactful on our lives and please don't forget, kids, never take freedom for granted. >> carley: never take freedom for granted. it's a wonderful message.
