earlier. >> has the president had any medical exams since his last annual physical in february? >> and we -- we're able to talk to his doctor about that and that is a no. >> he hasn't had any kind of medical exam? >> no. >> the hastily organized meeting with governors coming days after the debate was an attempt to shore up the president's support. they are standing behind him for now. >> none of us are denying thursday night was a bad performance. it was a bad -- it was a bad hit, if you will on that. but it doesn't impact what i believe, is he delivering. if we are honest about the concerns we are hearing from people. and we are also honest about the fact as the president continued to tell us and show us that he was all in. we said we would stand with him. >> i'm here to tell you today, president joe biden is in it to win it. >> madeleine: those concerns that governor wes moore mentioned appeared to line up of this account from the gathering

of the "new york times." >> at least one of those governors was very straight with him about the fact that they personally thought that biden seemed fine for his age but was very clear about the fact that voters in their state do not feel the same way, so it sounds to me like the tenure of that meeting was them supporting him now and wanting to know more from him about what specifically he will do to stay on the ticket and when. >> madeleine: also on wednesday house minority leader hakeem jeffries reportedly held a conference call with democratic leaders to prevent a tide of defections. per "the washington post," some participants are worried about the president's electability. two democratic house lawmakers have already called for the president to step aside. guys, back to you. >> lawrence: wow, interesting stuff down there, maddy, thanks so much. no one wants to put their name on the report of who is the governor that is saying that the president essentially needs to step aside? the president has made it very

clear that he is not going to step aside. is he not going to be pushed out of the race. i think it just shows you the operation of democrat politics. you can say whatever you want about a divided republican party back in the day with donald trump, but when there was a governor or senator, that disagreed with the former president, they put their names on the quote. there was -- they were called by the press to say who is it? give me something to run on. but, because the democrats run their operation with the power of the purse, no democrats is going to put their name on it. and, you know, it's a shame on these governors, supposed to be chief executives in their own state. no one wanted to put their name to provide some cover for the representatives in the house. that they say there is 25. we have only seen two so far, kayleigh. >> you make a great point. these governors came out. i watched it in real time. i heard the win 30 times. we're only going to win. only three came out.

notably gavin newsom and pritzker not there. the story from the governors you are looking at. the real stories to your point, lawrence, was going to come from the leaks. within hours we had katy rogers at the "new york times" saying they are expressing doubt. "chicago sun times" had reporting. relearned biden said he had a checkout in good health, knocked on wood. all the leaks come to us. talk to our face. don't lie to us. don't lie to us because what you haired from those three governors and i'm being cynical here. i'm going to call it out what it is lies, lies. >> lawrence: exactly right. >> joey: funny it's governors. governors tend to make good presidents. executive good preparation for the presidency. as opposed to kamala harris coming from the senate. still saying that every senator sees the president in the mirror when they look because that's their aspirations. i don't know that every governor has that aspiration. what i'm getting to here if not biden who and how quickly figure that out.

only class of people that could make that decision for them would be those writing big checks. that's an element of this we don't get to hear. i think biden is down almost 100 million to trump in the last, i think quarter. i think it was 330 for trump and biden was like 260. biden is down quite a bit in fundraising and does that continue and does he become a liability for the party that way? i just don't know the runway is long enough to figure all that out. i don't know that replacing biden becomes a choice. it may become a necessity. it may be that actual physical health becomes the reason. in my opinion and i have said this for months, that would be the only reason that he doesn't continue down to get the nomination is if he physically just can no. >> lawrence: so van jones, who has been pretty open about what's happening, especially after the debate. he was almost in tears discussing who he calls his friends joe biden and who he loved, but, this was not good. he had a moment yesterday on cnn

about the plan. what is the plan to replace biden? this is what van jones had to say. watch. >> i understand people want to, you know, defend him and protect him and give him the space and dignity to make his own choice. there is a big conversation happening right now about how this happens not whether. behind the scenes it's full scale panic. people are passing around legal memos, pdfs flying back and forth on what happens tr what h. whatsapp. >> lawrence: i alluded to this earlier about democratic politics. no one can force him out. he is the president of the united states. >> kayleigh: yes. >> lawrence: he is also the presumptive nominee as well. so he has the delegates to be president to be at least a nominee. he also controls the money. has all the money right there. it's note like he is going to pass his war chest on. we learned from reports earlier

this week even if he had decided to get out of the race. that money would go to kamala harris. so, the -- all of these conversations are essentially just a pressure campaign to say, move out of the way. and it's coming from a lot of the obama wing of the party that didn't want him to run to begin with. and the biden camp and the obama camp don't get along. they will find the obama camp to be pretentious. they are all-knowing. you know, there is glowing images of him and former president obama walking through the rose garden. but there was a tumultuous relationship and it ended with him selecting hillary clinton. so, all of the people that are calling for joe to move are a part of the different camp. the people that are, you know, big supporters of joe biden, that were on his campaigns, they want him to stay in the race. including his family. >> kayleigh: that's right. valerie biden we learned is one

of the few, this is according to reporting that is expressing concern. >> lawrence: his sister. >> kayleigh: his good health. inner circle jill biden and hur biden insisting he stay in the race. valerie biden is going to be at the white house today sit across from him and look at him face to face, tie eye. what will he say? how does this happen? reese gordon a reporter has pointed this out, jason chaffetz has said this too, even if you push the delegates to kamala even if you push the money to kamala there are state rules, ballot deadlines about which name appears on the ballot. do you not think republicans are going to litigate the heck out of that? >> lawrence: especially in ohio. >> carley: of course. they are. of course. >> joey: van jones just played that clip not whether but how. very specific pdf's on what happens app. he has seen the conversation the

the biden age story? i have read the full piece this morning. i found the whole thing to be fascinating. one of the things as joey alluded to they talk about it being a right wing conspiracy. it's no longer a conspiracy at this point. >> joey: it never was. it never was. >> lawrence: something that we all saw. we were just covering it as it happened. but then later on in the piece, he talked about that even the reporters that wanted to go out on a limb and do, you know, a slight article about it, there was was immediate pushback from the white house. and they did not like the pushback. they did not like losing access to the white house. so, essentially we have an entire press corps that either thought it was going to help the republicans or were more concerned about their access to the presidency, and the parties that they were going on. you know, i just think that is not a way for our press corps to conduct themselves, i mean, you took the darts, the arrows,

every single day, they suggested that donald trump, that the cabinet should have the 25th amendment back then with no evidence. they encouraged medical exams, you got the press secretary that lied about it yesterday, i wonder if there is going to be any follow-up about that. if you were press secretary, it wouldn't have gone down like that. >> kayleigh: you sore correct she was asked ab did the presidt have medical exam in the aftermath of this debate performance she said no, no. i'm going to be gratuitous my interpretation of her it was either a lie or maybe she was misled by the staff. you are only as good as the information you are given. how can you trust anything coming out of the press secretary's mouth at this point? anything coming out of this administration w new york magaze is reporting they got too far immeasured in whether a the magazine call a lie.

can't get out of it. once you lie once it spirals and spirlsz and spirals. her lying on the medical exam. that's the tip of the spear. how does america get out of this? >> lawrence: should she be out there had i guess is the question in this moment? it seems like the only person that can clear this up is the president of the united states i find it cowardly to continue to push her out. >> joey: if he can't do that thats the conversation. we talked about this on "the five" that president biden should come down the hallway and address the press. nothing about what i have seen in the last much less week tells me he can physically and cognitively do that in a way that's convincing. that's the real contention. that's why the hawaiian governor came long flight for one hour in washington, d.c. they want to know. there is nothing out there that shows proof that he can physically do that and at some point he will have to, you would think sooner rather than later.

but just on this idea that the media, and we are part of the media but i guess the mainstream left leaning media is coming around. they are not coming around to being objective. they are not coming around to saying the truth is more important than our politics. they are coming around to the idea that biden is losing in the polls, that donald trump will probably win if biden is the nominee. they are still operating on behalf of the democratic party. when you sit here and we do this on this network and you point out james carville or bill maher says something we agree with. it's not because they agree with us. they see the danger for the democratic party, the progressives and what they want to happen. maybe the cabal that's running behind the scenes if biden can no longer be that punt for them, it's donald trump. >> kayleigh: just a question to pose to your point about joe biden. do you think so there is any scenario in which donald trump would have allowed me to stand at the podium and take questions

about him not having the ability to answer questions. >> lawrence: not a chance. >> kayleigh: he would have marched out to the podium as he did every day during covid. every day he took to the podium and looked the american people in the eye and answered questions. >> lawrence: brian stelter this piece we were talking about. the media didn't dodge the biden age story. published lengthy stories i would love to read them. the public wasn't in the dark. no they weren't either. questions about biden were not emphasized as much as they should have been. why weren't they? because you guys wanted to be friends with the white house. go to all the cool parties have. a good time. protect him from donald trump because he was a threat to democracy. you know, i remember when i first started in this business i had, you know, elected official -- i was critical of them on tv. and they sent me a note and they said, lawrence, i thought you were my friend. why wouldn't you just, you know, critique me behind the scenes? i said i'm not a politician's

friend. my job is to serve my audience. but you know what? i made the decision that i would never let an elected official this way. i wouldn't go to their parties. i wouldn't go to their events, because there has to be a line. there is going to come a time. can you support the agenda of a president privately and say hey, this is great for the country, but you got to advocate for the people that you serve, which is our audience on the daily basis. and it's gonna conflict at one point and it's conflicting right now. you have a president that is mentally unfit for the office. and have you partisans that are part of the media that think he is the best candidate to beat donald trump. and that's the problem here. >> joey: one person who hasn't aged a day since i have met her or shows her cards on politics is carley shimkus. >> carley: all my dreams just realized. joey, you are my favorite person. >> joey: we got to work together tonight. i have got to butter up. >> carley: happy fourth of july to awful you guys. more news to get. to say a mexican national who came to our country illegally

call people in your profession got access and reported it that particular quote was only in the context of an extreme case. i was trying to make the point that joe biden has joe biden has a brand reputation with the american public that is incredibly helpful against donald trump. you are libertarian. you understand. in order for the cleansing fire of an authoritarian movement like trump to take out all of our laws and rules you have to persuade people that the system is broken and irrear deemably corrupt. americans can't unsee that joe biden is patriotic and honest and decent no matter what anyone has said. that is what i was saying. that brand is there for joe and it's not there for anyone else dmitry to that point. i get it, it was a private phone call. we have the call now a lot of

people have expressed it when it comes to kamala harris. she was the first one out of the primary. the laughs, the cackles, really hasn't gravitated voters. the white house keeps giving her different assignments. her staff have gone out in publications and talked about how hard it is working for her and that she doesn't read the information. when you look at the latest hypothetical, trump is at 47, harris is at 45. i mean, there's a real issue there. and i know it sucks ever having a private conversation put out there but the idea that there are some democrats that think that harris is the solution for many democrats biden is better, right? >> i mean, look. biden is the best -- if it's important to not have donald trump be president again. which i think it is and i know y'all disagree. if you think that's important, biden is our best bet to defeat

him. he has been chosen by the party twice and he has incredible brand with the american public and presided over the strongest economy in the world, by far. and so that's just the best bet. now, kamala harris is tough and savvy, and a very tough prosecutor. so, she can take the case that we should keep a criminal out of the white house. >> lawrence: dmitri just me and you speaking here. >> of course, no one is listening. >> lawrence: i'm not even talking about the election. after what you witnessed on the debate stage, do you really think he can do the job right now? >> yes. and i will tell you why. you guys have talked about the media failing to address biden's age. >> lawrence: not his age. his acuity. i don't care about the age. i don't care about age. >> right, lawrence. that's the issue. it's acuity. mental acuity, right?

so you had a debate and you have talked about -- you had a debate where one of the major party candidates demonstrated that they have lost touch with reality. unable to distinguish fact from fiction. did you hear what donald trump said about general john kelly? did you hear what he said about john kelly? >> lawrence: dmitri i love you and think you are a reasonable democrat. >> i love you. >> lawrence: when you try to compare contrast of policy, when you have a president who can't mako heernt statements or remember where is he at or remember the policy positions is he supposed to take. that's what we are debating. we are not debating fact what candidate says or what lies they told. that's the game of politics. i just want a president, if he is gonna take a policy position to actually know the policy. to actually know where he is at. to be able to complete his sentence. to know that he is talking about abortion and not immigration at the times. that's what we witnessed on that debate stage. and i haven't heard from democrats yet on how they're

gonna to be able to fill that void for voters to make that make sense. >> lawrence, you make excellent points. i'm not talking about policy. i'm just talking about cognitive ability. we have retained the best brain scientists in the world to evaluate trump and biden since 2019 because we have two very old candidates. what we see is a man who is physically aging and is having mental -- sorry, having motor and mechanical decline, against another candidate who has lost it, who cannot distinguish between facts and fiction. did you -- can you hear what donald trump said about his longest serving chief of staff john kelly? >> lawrence: i watched the full debate. i think we are going to disagree on policy. >> not policy, lawrence. did you see it's -- this is not policy. can this candidate distinguish between reality? >> lawrence: you got a president that was on stage that said no one died under his watch in the military. we can go back and forth on

health when he sets down with abc news tomorrow. he can ill afford another gaffe or a mistake. he has to convince not just the country generally that he is up to the job. but he has to convince his own party, these 25 democrats on capitol hill that we have heard so much about who are rumored to be putting together a letter calling on him to step down. he has to convince them to hold off. he is trying to throttle dissent and rebuild the dam at the same time. >> kayleigh: no doubt. phil politico reporting he told governors he got a medical checkup and it was after the debate. and likewise your colleague at cbs weijia jiang pointing that out as well and jet the president press secretary had this to say in the briefing yesterday. >> has the president had any medical exams since his last annual physical in february? >> and we're able to talk to his doctor about that and that is a no. >> he hasn't had any kind of medical exam? >> no.

>> kayleigh: the press secretary said no. the president said yes. look, i get she is only as good as the information that's given to her. but, can you trust the information coming out of the white house? >> frankly that, was a really disappointing exchange because we heard from the president's spokesperson that no, he had not had a medical exam. and then only later does news leak out from this meeting with the governors that president biden was telling these governors that, yes, he had a checkup. it is a difficult situation certainly for the press secretary. i don't know if her wires got crossed or if she was given the wrong information, butten, again, kayleigh what the press has been saying to this white house again and again a lot of this could be solved if they brought the president's physician out to that briefing room and let us ask him questions or better yet, bring the president himself out. >> kayleigh: phil, you are in that room every single day and i have heard someone like brian stelter saying the media covered the acuity story all along. i wonder every day you hear

every question on balance how often is mental acuity brought up not post debate but predebate in that white house press briefing room? >> well, certainly the band aid was ripped off after the debate. it's much more in the news now because it's inescapable. look, this white house they wanted to bubble wrap the president and it's no secret that they wanted to talk about his accomplishments. not his age and acuity. a lot of the big networks and a lot of the big papers, not fox, not this network, they did their readers a disservice when they were dismissing allegations of the president looking lost, as cheap fakes, sort of repeating white house talking points uncritically one week and then the next week they were reporting with total shock on the condition of the president. that was a disservice by the press, i think. and frankly there should be some introspection in a hurry. >> kayleigh: all love following your reporting. thank you. >> thank you.

fireworks and he joins us from cheyenne, wyoming. chris, fireworks in the morning. i love it. never too early. what are you seeing out there? is there an appetite this fourth of july? >> oh, it's incredible the app. tight for fourth of july and fireworks this year. we have seen record numbers coming up to cheyenne. yeah, it's very early and a little chilly out here but perfect time, right? >> kayleigh: absolutely. >> lawrence: chris, when is the best time to light your fireworks? do you do it right at 9:00, 8:30? does it need to be dark? can it still be light or can you just do it all day? >> you know, some of them do show unfairly well in the light. but, generally you want it to be dark, a little bit after dusk. the darker the better. but obviously you want to respect your neighbors, everyone around you and not do it too late. >> joey: on the fireworks, i was an a eod tech, a bomb tech. we really respect black powder explosives pyrotechnics because
