conference leaves the party in purgatory. >> steve: that's right. >> because as we have been talking, republicans are just watching. get out the popcorn and watch last night. it was -- and so today we're the post game show. a lot of democrats who want him to go wanted him to really blow it. and he did -- he made a lot of blunders. and there were a number of gaffes. that's why the "new york post" right now the headline says bumbling biden gaffes his way through q&a. any dem convinced blunder of the world. it is like a purgatory. they wanted him to blow it and he did just enough because the bar is so low. >> brian: i think he did. i thought he did fine. i'm telling you. if this was just a press conference, we would have said oh, look, he made two mistakes. but this is the worst possible scenario for democrats. because he didn't blow -- wasn't clueless. there was no freezing moments. there was no -- i mean there was

a typical joe biden miss-up. saying that donald trump was vice president. obviously terrible, but it's typical of joe biden. when he announces he wants dead congresswomen to stand up and when he tells people their spouse is dead when they are alive, that's what joe biden has been doing. but this is the worst. >> steve: for years. >> brian: this is my view on nato. this is my view on afghanistan. this is my view on what i'm going to come back and win. i get up -- when i get knocked down, i stand up again. to me, he thinks he is fine. is he not going anywhere. his family doesn't want him going anywhere. you're going to have to find leverage or extortion to kick him out. >> lawrence: so that point, brian, i think you are right from the standpoint, say the terrible debate did not happen. i don't think there would be any criticism from the media of that speech because you are right. that's just a typical joe biden. but i think on the substance.

even take the gaffes out of it. the way that he spoke about the economy and inflation, i mean just lying to the american people. at no point did he say that i felt your pain. then he decided he was going to take credit for the border right now because it's the summer and texas has secured its poferghts border. he says everything is fine at the border. then the most stunning thing so much so he got a reaction from trey yingst on twitter he said that hamas is losing its support in gaza? west bank which is totally untrue look at the polling and support it's actually going up. from issue to issue. he just lied through the press conference. and, of course. so media was saying that he showed his knowledge and depth for. >> steve: master class. >> ainsley: shows you how low the bar is. you can't take the debate away we all watched that of course we were all focused on the presser last night. yes, maybe in another situation we wouldn't have been talking about this as much as we are,

but you can't erase t the debat. that's why the spotlight is on him. they have a big decision to make, the party does. last night was very bizarre. he was whispering sometimes. then yelling sometimes. he will trail off and say well, anyways. he said that nine times. and then he was asked a question and he said i'm going to the johnson library anyway. out of nowhere he said gun control -- control guns not girls. then he screams more children killed by bullets than anything else in the world or in the u.s. he said tomorrow, when i show up at the convention, he kept clearing his throat. i don't know what that's about. maybe is he still sick or taking some sort of medicine. he talked -- he addressed going to bed at 8:00. he said it's smart to pace myself. and lots of mumbling. and then at the end, when a reporter -- he was done taking questions. and they were trying to get him off the stage and then one reporter asked him the question. you did realize you called your vice president donald trump? and then he says that -- the

reporter says well donald trump has been tweeting about this right now. and he has been aware of it. how do you combat the criticism from tonight? and joe biden said listen to him. thank you. and that's the end of the press conference. >> brian: stood there and froze at the end -- didn't freeze. i didn't say that because sometimes he actually freezes. he should have just left. he just stood there i'm thinking to myself why is he standing there? sure enough someone stood up donald trump called you out because you just called him the vice president. believe him was a bad ad-lib. >> steve: he said anyway any time he lost his place. it's like i had a train of thought -- anyway. so, anyway, what we have done is we have attendant 59 minutes of the press conference. >> brian: knocked it down to 57. >> steve: we are going to snippet it up throughout the morning and we're going to show you. here's a couple minutes of how it started. joe biden had a list of reporters, of course, fox is never on the list. some of the highlights that ainsley was talking about in

whispering when unions do better, everybody does better. i have not had any of my european allies come up to me and say: joe, don't run. what i hear them say is you've got win. control guns, not girls. more children are killed by a bullet than any other cause of death. the united states of america. what the hell are we doing? and surrounded by good docs. if they think there is a problem, i promises you or even if they don't think it's a problem and should have a neurological exam again. i will do it. i believe i'm the best qualified to govern. and i think i'm the best qualified to win. but there are other people that could beat trump, too. but it's hard to start from scratch. >> lawrence: i think it's clear he is not getting out. number two, he completely throws his staff, that's the stupidest thing. >> steve: couple of times.

university now. he never once spoke w about the hostages in israel. speaking about gaza and hamas and netanyahu and then he talked about the institutions and democracy on the ballot and we have to stop this conservative supreme court. since when is conservatives a curse word? liberal, conservative. you have a court that is mostly conservative. but what is wrong with the institution? he is defaming and demeaning an institution while saying donald trump will defame and demean institutions. and while leaning on the project 2025, 900 pages. some of it good. some of it bad. none of it bad, it's conservative doctrine. >> ainsley: think tank. not donald trump. >> lawrence: he is all over the place. >> brian: 12 things he listed if the trump team would do as president if they win. the rng is going to talk about it. don't make up scenarios about policies he doesn't back. >> steve: you know, here's the thing. joe biden was at this nato summit for three days. the average american,

[whispering: no one is saying that no poll says that. >> steve: no poll said that last night at times he went from old yeller to whispering joe. that was whispering joe. >> brian: david axelrod listened, acknowledged that he did better this time. but also pointed out that people in his camp are not being honest with him about his polls. that's what it showed him he said if what he said at the end of the presser is true it sounds like biden team has not been very candid with him about what the data is show egg. the age issue is huge and insurmountable concern and his odds of victory very, very slim. >> lawrence: it's incredible. when you look at the whole thing it's like he had -- he did acknowledge he has been hearing some of the stuff from the

senators in congress. but he says that it doesn't impact him that much because that's what happened. that's typical washington behavior. be. >> brian: senator and people get nervous about his race. >> lawrence: old stories. i don't know why any of that was relevant to what we were discussing there. but i just got to say there were some good questions from the press corps. but they didn't hammer him as much as i thought they were going to do. >> brian: no follow-up. they would kill their mics. >> lawrence: it was over at that point. especially during the trump years. when the president didn't quite answer the question next reporter behind him would say hey you didn't answer my colleague's question. there was none of that they are still protecting him in a way. >> ainsley: to david axelrod's point that the chance of a victory are slim. you look at the polls, whether or not they are correct or not. but the polls are showing that out of the six swing states, trump is taking five. he is tied in wisconsin with joe biden. and if you look at this poll

that is from "the washington post," 67 percent said that they think he should step aside. 30 percent said he should continue, and 3% didn't have an answer. >> steve: ainsley, that was predicated upon, that was before last night's dee events. it was all about the debate. it will be interesting to see whether or not any of the polls change given -- and we're going to talk about the mainstream media reaction in just a little bit. you know, he wasn't terrible last night. he wasn't great, but he was not terrible. >> brian: which in my opinion is the worst scenario for democrats. >> steve: it's a purgatory. >> brian: house intelligence committee member the latest democrat to call on president biden to withdraw from the 2024 race. there are now 17 democratic lawmakers telling joe directly to step aside. >> ainsley: madeleine rivera has the latest for us. good morning, maddy. >> good morning. like you guys were pointing out. the issue for democrats is that the president didn't completely fumble at the news conference but he didn't knock it out of the park either. a lot of democrats don't see

that inconsistency as sustainable, listen. >> you can't have a situation where every day we're holding our breath whether it's a press conference, debate, or a rally. and i think we're at historic moment where the president can pass the torch. >> really not about tonight. and one of the really kind of sick aspects of this moment is that we are watching every speech, every rally, every debate and saying how did he do today? and that's just not the way to think about the presidency of the united states congressman jim rimes one of 17 calling for him to step aside. peters is calling for the president to drop out after the news conference and this in part. today i ask president biden to withdraw from the presidential campaign. the stakes are high and we are on a losing course.

congresswoman marie goosen camp perez is suggesting the president resign stating the americans the if the is fit enough to do the job. the crisis in the president's leadership needs to come to an end. the president should do what he knows is right for the country and put the national interest first. now cnn reports former president obama and former house speaker nancy pelosi have spoken privately about the president's campaign saying, quote: cnn spoke with more than a dozen members of congress, operatives and multiple people in touch with obama and protest. many of whom say the end for biden's candidacy feels clear and at this point it's a matter of how it plays out even after thursday night's news conference. our peter doocy says he was actually planning to ask the president about that report last night. whether the president wants his former boss working quietly to replace him. lawrence, steve, ainsley and brian. >> brian: thank you so much, maddy. why did he green light george clooney column? he wanted to stop that he had toler, he could have stopped it.

>> steve: could have. >> brian: why is he meeting with nancy pelosi behind closed doors and reinforce what we all know the biden camp does not get along with the obama camp. this is going to make him dig in more when he find out barack obama is behind it because in 2016 he went with hillary clinton. >> lawrence: lawrence to that point, pelosi, obama, savvy politicians. the headlines all day yesterday was that they were leading the charge to get him out. >> steve: they still are. >> lawrence: they could have crushed those stories with a statement. some spokesperson, but, instead, they essentially turned up the heat. >> brian: hillary clinton at a fundraiser behind closed doors and according to "new york post" investment banker said that this is like -- he goes joe biden's situation is like trying to take the keys away from a parent. and laughed and followed up and said ultimately it's going to be joe biden and his people around him that will make that decision. but hillary clinton mocking

behind closed doors. >> ainsley: the party is divided. you have half of them that want him to stay and half don't. george clooney i don't think he would have written that letter unless he ran it by blessing of barack obama and other democrats. the guy who said george clooney, he produces most, let him stick to that was congressman steve cohen. he said that he is convinced a lot of people -- he is convinced a lot of people within the walls of congress that biden should stay in the race. you had kate bedingfield the former comms director for biden said he needed to show up tonight and he did. >> steve: here's thing. remember nancy pelosi a couple days ago on another channel said let's just hold your fire. democrats, don't say anything in public until the end of the week. in other words, until after. >> lawrence: the press conference. >> steve: exactly. the cbs is reporting today that apparently dozens of democratic lawmakers in the next 48 hours, it's going to be coordinated. they are going to en masse, say joe, you got to go.

>> lawrence: unbelievable. >> steve: cbs says that the democrats say that behind the scenes the next three or four days are going to be brutal for joe biden exception is squeeze him out by the middle of next week. >> ainsley: right in the middle of rng. >> brian: i watched lawrence editing this morning is this the montage here? >> lawrence: this is the media reaction. >> why haven't they done a lot more of these. that's about as comfortable is he going to get. >> at the beginning where he vice president vice president trump instead of vice president harris. lengthy answers on subjects he knows very well. >> there were obviously verbal missteps. there were some periods of hopingness but also periods of generally impressive commands and influence. >> not only strong on foreign policy is he fundamentally right on foreign policy. >> give some credit where credit is due. it was a solid performance

except for one filibuster. >> lawrence: monday maddow says he is fundamentally right. i think to the media's -- they are in a box now. because what do you do? he said that he's not going to leave the race. they don't want donald trump. they have to repair him in some way it's the same thing for these representatives. they are saying step aside. at some point they will pivot as well when he decides -- well, he has already decided is he staying. >> brian: all they care about poll numbers. i care about his mental health and who is running the country now. mental health is fine and 58 years old and polling badly, that's the way they are approaching this when they should say i don't think he's healthy, i don't think he can do the job. is he making me worried. is he not showing up at work. he only works until 8:00. those are the things that matter. >> ainsley: brian, they know that they have been saying that behind closed doors for a long time. hearing lots of reports we knew how bad he was. the debate just made it open to the public.

could put a halt to so many attacks. take out airfields and military depos not being allowed to do that that is the question that keeps asking for. they keep asking for it. they have been given a little bit at a time. zelenskyy says the same. they need to be getting more. they need to be getting it faster. >> ainsley: then bret asked zelenskyy how closely do you all follow the u.s. presidential election over there and he said more than you do, bret. that's how much our politics matter to them. how much do our politics matter to the new u.k. prime minister and people across the pond in the u.k. where you live? >> look, what we saw yesterday was the first meeting between the new prime minister starmer and president biden. that's a critical moment for a prime minister. you sit down and talk about the special relationship and talk about moving forward. again, that was not headline we got. the question going to care starmer is solely how is president biden handling this? what was his condition? and it's a pity to see that and i know care starmer was hoping to talk about other topics.

overshadowing so many things happening. you look at some of the papers in the u.k. the headlines on every page are about president biden right now. joe no was the front cover of the sun. biden fumbles his make or break moment. his chance to win over the doubters. he blew it. it is a pity nato leaders look to the u.s. as well for leadership. at this point they don't have it. also looking forward to potential trump presidency. so nato leaders are having to balance. this as care starmer how do you prepare for nato if president trump is elected who doesn't have such firm commitments perhaps the money going into it. nato leaders care starmer doesn't know what direction to go at the moment. it's hard to watch. >> steve: hard for european leaders to bad-mouth either biden or trump because they just never know who asking about to be the boss. >> that's right. they are really toeing the line at the moment. it's american leadership that so many people used to look towards led the way that many people
