something is said to take a tak at what happened. get down, get down, get down, get down. what are we doing? what are we doing? go, go, go for cracks direct and independent review of the national security at yesterday's rally to assess exactly what happened. i will share the results of the independent review with the american people as well. we must unite as "one nation." we must unite as "one nation" to demonstrate who we are. these us to brand-new our 4:00 p.m. on the east coast right now we are told former president donald trump is on his way. you can see the motorcade on your screen at moments ago on his way to milwaukee for the rnc lesson 24 hours after that assassination attempt on his life. president biden did just speak as you heard a short time ago called for a swift and thorough investigation. he will have more when he addresses the nation again live from the oval office tonight 8:00 p.m. eastern time.
1:02 pm
that brings us to now for good to be back with you i am sandra smith and the orca. john: good to back he was with you as well special edition of america reports here is where things stand right now but live look outside the shooters home and bethel park the fbi is investigating the incident as an assassination attempt an act of terror. law enforcement said the shooter, 20-year-old thomas matthew crooks acted alone. >> ap right now is reporting a local officer encountered the gunman who pointed his rifle at the officer. the officer then retreated down the ladder that is when the shooter shot towards the former president donald trump. fox is confirming a gun that was recovered from the shooter was illegally purchased by the suspects father. john: a multiple explosives or from the suspects car bomb making materials also found in his house.
1:03 pm
will speak directly to a former classmate of the shooter and moments. >> fox team a coverage right now. david is spent with more details on the suspect but let's get right to cb cotton is live on the ground in beutler, pennsylvania force. we still do not know or have the motive at this hour? >> we do not. i can tell you investigators continue to dig here at the gun once home and bethel park at just about an hour south of where the tragic shooting where the tragic shooting took place i can tell you federal agents are keeping a tight perimeter around this area as they continue to comb and dig for evidence confirming thomas matthew kirks acted alone we know he graduated from high school just about two years ago. we have confirmed he worked as a dietary aide at a local skilled nursing and rehabilitation center pretty spokesperson telling us is background check was clean and it cleared him to work. these two details on the shooter come as we learn more about
1:04 pm
those closest to the tragedy. 57-year-old david dutch's 74-year-old james copenhaver were both injured and now in stable condition according to state troopers ate firefighter corey comperatore tragically lost his life and the gunfire erupted. his sister telling the "new york times" quote we watched him die on the news it. one of his final messages he wrote quote trump rally, butler, pennsylvania when replying to a tweet about his weekend plans pennsylvania governor joshua shapiro sharing the firefighter went to church every sunday. he loved his family and died trying to protect them. >> a cincorporate was an avid supporter of the former president and was so excited to be there at last night with him and the community. i asked corey's a wife if it would be okay for me too share that we spoke and she said yes.
1:05 pm
she also asked i share with all of you that cory died a hero. that cory dove on his family to protect them. >> a governor joshua shapiro's ordered flags to fly at half staff and light of these horrific circumstances. sandra: cb cotton with the update on the ground thank you. john: relate more about the man who tried to assassinate for president trump we are looking at pictures of his vehicle were law enforcement reportedly discovered explosive devices. it is a frightening reminder of what nearly took place. justice correspondent david spent alive in washington pretty heard from the fbi and the latest hour what is the latest question. >> fbi director called what happened absolutely despicable. they are investigating fbi agents is entire situation as potential domestic terrorism we were just on a call with top officials but this is being
1:06 pm
investigated as the fbi is trying to gain access to the suspects phone. they do not have access they physically have the phone at the quantico virginia it but are not able to get inside asked what service provider they're working with i was told they are not in a position to tell me that information at this time. we know it ar cell 556 was located at the scene near the body of this suspect explosive device was found in the car took a wild for authorities to get over to the car of the 20-year-old suspect because they were concerned something may explode. now the suspect has been negative and fbi holdings he was not known to law enforcement before the fbi has received about 2000 different tips all over. we are also told he was a member of the rifle team at his high school. i know be speaking with a former classmate coming up. this man was taken out almost
1:07 pm
immediately by the secret service sniper after shots were fired at former president trump. his name is thomas matthew crooks 20 years old the fbi spent the majority of the day at his home and bethel park south of pittsburgh. were told by sources not many high-level folks is a lot of finger-pointing going on the fbi talking to anyone from the secret service advanced team about what went wrong where there were missteps. on the on the shooting of former president trump itself the other part of the investigation the fbi could talk at any time as they are leading this probe. still no official motive is part of the investigation i sent the ap reports as one local police officer encountered crooks who
1:08 pm
pointed his rifle at the officer the officer retreated down the ladder and crooks quickly took a shot towards the trunk we had led to believe note local police officers had responded in any way to him being up on the roof. anonymous officials to the associated press would seem to contradict that. >> totally contradicted i asked the fbi officials about that as iisand what were the interactios with crooks before i pose the ap report to them directly at which point they said they are not in any type of position to talk about what happened before. they made it seemed like it was not any type of federal authority that was involved with crooks. it is possible yes there was a local authority that was there. but according to the ap report at its one report at this time i have not seen anybody else reported there was a local police officer who is trying to engage with crooks, retreated at which point crooks then started shooting the crowd that is when
1:09 pm
the former president was hit. that is when mr. corey comperatore was killed the two others were injured we are going to press but they are not answering as far as what happened with the local police officer if indeed it was a local police officer. we certainly want to find out more leading up will get more cell phone video so many people have cell phones that want to find out what happened before they're asking people to call 1-800-call-fbi. again 1-800-call-fbi. john: having been to so much of the trump rally is just about everybody is recording at the should be lots to choose from when it comes to video. david get back to us if you or anything else. this is a news this ap report a police officer climbed up the ladder and encountered crooks and retreated back down the ladder again that comes from anonymous officials to the ap. you would wonder if that fellow pointed a rifle at the police officer why when the officer have immediately engaged him?
1:10 pm
>> there are so many questions you talk to experts in these fields i actually just talk to an army sniper who served three tours in afghanistan who said there is in no way the guy who countered shot the shooter, there's no way he did not see him on the rooftop. and that close proximity for there's huge questions of the star who saw what, when they sought, who they alerted whoever it was alerted how they responded i'm sure we will learn more as investigation continues for guitar guest jason went to play out president by and he did speak from the roosevelt room a short time ago. he spoke specifically on unity this was his message. >> there is no place in america for this kind of violence or any violence for that matter. the assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a nation. everything it is not who we are as a nation it is not america. we cannot allow this to happen.
1:11 pm
unity is the most elusive goal of all. nothing is as important and that right now. >> really interesting the former president donald trump is making his way to milwaukee. immediately following the president's remarks there. he took to "truth social" sent out a two word "truth social" it was unity now. we'll see with the messaging is from the president tonight from the oval office there was also this analysis from brit hume earlier today on newsroom. >> i guess we can hope and pray for some relief from this poisonous political atmosphere we have been living a nap for quite some time. we live in an age of exaggeration in which everything is pushed out to its possible outer limits. nobody is dangerous, they are all hitler we can hope we can turn the temperature down but the country is deeply divided.
1:12 pm
passions are very intense. my concern is this will tamp things down for a while but it tends to wear off and we are back to where we were. >> i'm sure there are so many americans right now in this moment having very similar thoughts. cox i am sure there are. i remember in 2016 when donald trump was having his first republican convention. typically the nominee for the presumed nominee stays under wraps until thursday, the last day there's a big unveiling. trent came at on the stage on the first night for a brief appearance. i imagine he will probably get the same thing tomorrow is a republican national convention kicks off. can you imagine the reception he is going to get the moment he steps out on that stage? >> quick to speak about this mess and of unity have the candidates might change their messaging headed into their. maybe it's worth noting a couple hours ago an invitation was

extended to nikki haley who has now accepted and will be a speaker at the rnc. that is a big news just hours ahead of the events that they i. click save and are speaking slot on tuesday night. the vice presidential nominee goes on wednesday night. that would seem to eliminate the possibility she's going to be the running mate. of course you could always change this progress ever cut anything out this atmospheric so it is going to be the speaker wednesday evening? that will be something to see. now this. >> this is probably one of the most secure areas of up face of the planet right now. we have thousands of law enforcement agencies from all over the state and all over the midwest here. john: short time for now secret service will hold a security briefing and milwaukee. ahead of the rnc. we'll have a look into the preparations there. sandra: that will be kill key. a full investigation into any lapses following the incident britt will get analysis in the

>> myself, other members of my team and partners we worked in a bipartisan with members of congress to increase funding for this adventure because they've been stuck at $50 million going back to 2004. we've got to elevate it to $75 million i'm happy they were able to do that you are right this'll probably be one of the most secure places but not just
1:19 pm
in the city but in the country. >> pewaukee mayor johnson speak about the replica national convention the additional security now expected after yesterday's assassination that comes under former president donald trump. secret service is a one of their most significant intelligence priorities britt set to hold a news briefing just moments from now but that will be key to listen to mark merritt is waiting on that briefing everyone wants to hear what comes from this. what are authorities saying about the threat level right now? quick sander, good afternoon we stepped outside to make sure we could get a signal but also to show you what it is going to be like here on the ground city officials say will the city of milwaukee is not locked down it certainly feels like it look at the security barriers that have now been set up all across the city of milwaukee. these are not small barriers and someone could jump over instead they go for several blocks in many directions the idea to control the flow not only of traffic and people and they can
1:20 pm
stop anybody from getting into certain pockets once the effects of the security perimeter go into effect over all they do expect many questions today to be about what has changed in the last 24 hours since the assassination attempt in pennsylvania like we have heard from so many officials they say they have been gearing up for this verb or that a year and they know what to expect. >> we do have a number of areas outlined for that particular expression because we do respect the first amendment. we do have a level of vigilance. might land, sea, air we have all of those resources in place to ensure we have the level of vigilance and leaning into ensuring the securities at the highest level for this type of event. >> this is been interesting to describe this as the highest level. right up with the super bowl or the democratic convention that will be coming up next month. the city of milwaukee says they are prepared. they will work with federal
1:21 pm
agencies to make sure that the manpower needed for such an event like this. while we're out here right now people can walk freely that will change over the course of the next few hours will see these cars are cleared out secret service there will be checking credentials of people will getting anywhere near the convention center is will have to show they are meant to to be there and obviously just to get inside of the whole level of security. in this news conference we expect a lot of questions to be about what change, has a threat level change in the last 24 hours? we expect physician officials to kick that back to pennsylvania ppick a getting a list that he will be speaking at this and briefing less than 10 minutes is the rnc corner for the secret service milwaukee pd the city of milwaukee. milwaukee fire, fema, fbi will listen to what they have to say because it is so important right now mark meredith thank you. >> it happened so quick like just three shots. when out sink before, i heard
1:22 pm
three minutes maybe four minutes your talk in that bbc interviewed their 20 secret service agents running around like chickens with their head cut off in that field. you are tail meat sniper on the barn cannot see the sky 100 yards? that is not at up to me. >> eyewitness raising serious questions about the response of the shots fired former president trump yesterday house republicans are demanding a full investigation into any lapses. frank is that former head of presidential protective detail for the secret service. he joins us now for more on the response. frank, two responses you have the protective detail that immediately leapt into action and protected the former president. he had the counter sniper team on the roof that immediately took out the suspect. then there is the other side of the story went to put up the satellite view of the area where the president was speaking. you can see with the president was speaking you can see the shooter's location on that roof. it says on this map is approximate 160 yards i measured it out at 412 feet wealth and
1:23 pm
the effective range of an ar style rifle even some with relatively little experience. how in the world was that location left unguarded? asked john, thank you for having me on part first of all i do not believe it was unguarded. there is no way they missed that during the advance. there were assets obviously designed to neutralize any threats from that area. but we have to find out is what went wrong why did they not detect this individual? why didn't the communication were between the witnesses, the police and the secret service? that is something we have to look into for the good thing about the secret services everything is documented there is everything in writing. with special operation division tactical survey which will tells exactly who is designated to that area up exactly with responsibilities were. the side of post assignment log was also all the officers and agents were posted by what their instructions work. with emergency action plan involved in critical instances
1:24 pm
waiting to review those documents. we need to interview these people and find out what happened. we are a proactive organization. i mentioned it last night our job is to do the advance to mitigate the threats to eliminate the threats and to make sure that it is safe. we should never have to go into the reactive mode. >> for so many of us who had so much time to now analyze, digest the of the prospective utes 2024 how is there not like a drone flying around that would have picked off a sniper on a roof that close to the former president? >> it is an excellent question where we normally have aerial surveillance as you all know. the callsign is huntsman. they basically use flare as well the temperatures they were yesterday i'm not sure how good flare it would work because it was warm. the bottom line is normal these
1:25 pm
assets are designated for the president of the united states. once again i am retired i did not do the advance so i'm not sure what assets they had in place that is one facet i would say would be very helpful to detect this individual as well as posting the area as well. and having people on the outside. we do have units involved on the exterior identify these types of threats. and something went wrong, we know that. people restart passing judgment i just want to make sure we review all the documents, the postings, interview and find out what happened were they diverted for some reason from that area? they should not have been whether assets who are not where they were supposed to be? these are questions that have to be answered there's a lot that has to be answered. >> frank many presidential events many presidential campaign events any time i've been to an event where there is an elevated position that could potentially be used as a shooting position there have been officers whether they be local police or secret service officers who have been posted in
1:26 pm
those buildings. if you've got a parking garage that is down the street it's got multiple levels. officers on every level of that building. why in your mind with they have not have posted uniform secret service or local police officer. not just around that building but on the roof of that building? >> so i agree one 100% with you that was probably a major threat. especially from a sniper position and sho should there hn officers posted? should there be an agency posted? you are absolute correct spread whatever was designed in that tactical plan they need to review it and determine what went wrong. there may have been someone who is supposed to be there and that might -- make their attention might've been taken only for whatever it would have been. that's not acceptable absolutely not acceptable but we need to find out exactly what happened there. there is no way they missed that. there is no way they missed that building. sandra: can i ask is we continue to watch his video of the secret service response, john i've been playing this for our viewers all
1:27 pm
afternoon. certainly everyone has been is n watching this since yesterday. but the immediate response of the secret service agents to cover the former president. to walk him off that stage. give us your thoughts on how they handle that? was that to a t how it should have been handled by the secret service? >> that cover to evacuate is done exactly due to training but i was training a presidency to i certified the advance agency for the advances and went out and signed off on it. i will tell you this much, that response was honorable. they put their bodies in the line of fire just like they swore they would do. you see how fast they moved on that diocese of the body markings how the movie once assess the medical condition of the president, moving him to an armored vehicle to get them out of the air as quickly as possible. the shift in the individuals on that date did their job yesterday. we cannot take that away from
1:28 pm
them. and they need to be admired for that. john: the counter sniper team took out the shooter. but again, this comes down it's almost like a hand of a providence intervene here. it sounded like the shooter was rushed to take a shot because people were on the ground yelling there is a report in the ap of a local police officer who encountered him on the roof but when he pointed his rifle at the officer, the officer retreated a little puff of wind here there the violent bullet goes off director the former president happened to turn his head just as the shot was being taken and nicked him in the air as opposed in full in the school. we mourn for corey comperatore who is killed we pray for the people who were in hospital recovery. but if had not been for a couple of minor little things that happened we could be talking about the assassination of a former president today.
1:29 pm
>> i totally understand that. i'll tell you talked about the police and the secret service but we work off encrypted radios. what happens is we are paired up with the police department so we get communication to our people for the bottom line is did that communication fail? we not able to put that over the airheirs are counter sniper teas and observers could train their attention toward that area? there seems to be a disconnect with the communication how they investigate these type of events before not exactly at this level. he seek communication sometimes is a problem or that is making sure anything the police they can get to us that we can quickly react to that for that could have been a problem once again i do not want to speak without having seven interview and find out exactly what happens. sandra: before you go it would to play the sound of an interview drawn john and i had e earlier hours with u.s. rep. he said it's time for the head of secret service to go after this happened.
1:30 pm
here he made the case, listen. >> summit really dropped the ball we have bei a person at bei in initiative person who heads up our secret service. she was working at pepsi before this. i know she was a former secret service agent. but still, this is what happens when you do not but the best players and it is a complete failure on our part is a complete breakdown of communication all the way down the line that starts at the top the head of the secret service needs to go that is obvious. i doubt that will happen. >> if not heard from her publicly would not see her take 28 microphone or explain what she saw happen or what they know now. she was in the briefing room with the present was how the situation room photographed with the security officials on the president and the vice president this morning. she was there. she is been at the helm
1:31 pm
directing the secret service for two years i believe she's had some role at the secret service for 25 years. do you believe in the wake of this that she needs to go? >> i would say i have worked with kim we were in the inspection division together. we cross paths on many occasions she was on the vice president's detail what i was on the the presidency to help it i will tell you all not make any comments whether she should go or not. a full investigation has to be done and after that is completed then we can look at thought to make decisions at that point it is a l little premature to maket statement now. john: so many aspects of this investigation have yet to be uncovered is going to go on for a long time, frank thank you for joining us really appreciate it. >> thank you very much for having me on. sandra: details about the shooter who opened fire on the former president authorities discovering his car which reportedly contained ied's does it developments in what people

(kev) ... i guess we're movin'. sandra: more information is emerging about the 20-year-old man that nearly assassinated former president donald trump and investigators are still digging into what led him to open fire. and what he planned to do with the bomb making materials and explosive devices that were reportedly found in his home and car. martha mccallum is joining us now executive editor of the story. all eyes are now focused on this in person, but they knew about him we will be learning more about that in just a moment. the fbi says they still do not
1:37 pm
have a motive please do jump into our coverage here as you had some fascinating interviews in the last couple of hours. hugs well, as have all of you. we were looking forward to this week coming to the convention site here in milwaukee, wisconsin. none of us thought we were going at the backdrop of this extraordinary story, extraordinary in an awful way that unfolded yesterday afternoon. there is a lot of excitement around here. there's so much focus on this investigation and it does seem i was listening to it that young man was saying who knew him and here is that video. every time we see it goes right through you heard the gunshots i cannot believe we are witnessing. so far his profile seems to shape up to not dissimilar to other shooters we have seen in the past. settlement was a bullied as you heard from that young man, a loner. all those things but the investigation under the estimate on going right now will uncover
1:38 pm
whether or not he had any links to anyone else. whether or not this was truly alone gunman effort on his part that's a huge part of this story but it almost feels like the bigger part of the investigation at this point or equally big is what happened? what was the response from law enforcement? you or talk about the reports the police officer went up a letter confronted the gunman went back down the ladder what happened with that moment and when the shots were fired his the thick of what they have to dig into now. it is a show shocking something like this could happen 43 years after ronald reagan's assassination attempt to see this unfold again by someone who found the proximity was able to fire off a shot given all of the security we all were confident in, raises so many questions. john: martha little while ago we are doing your program joe biden came out the roosevelt room talked about the need for unity in the wake of this.
1:39 pm
listen to what he said. >> there is no place in america for this kind of violence or any violence for that matter. an assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a nation, everything. it is not who we are as a nation. it is not america we cannot allow this to happen. unity is the most elusive goal of all. nothing is important and that right now by. >> this up from a president who at every turn denounced donald trump as a magnet extremist and said he was an existential threat to democracy. and now he says it's about unity? >> it is interesting, john pretty made the statement last night he said that is why i wanted to unify the country. talking about his last election. i think in the midst of covid a lot of voters did feel this was going to be a colder environment
1:40 pm
and his grandfatherly demeanor was going to bring some sense of unity but that is not what we saw we saw him very much lean into the progressives in his party and not shy away from the language around the former president being destructive to democracy is interesting saying these words and watch him pump his fist in the air as he get pushed into that limousine. it has just been unbelievable not even 24 hours yet. you've got this interesting dynamic you're in the middle of a presidential election. joe biden, the president has been put at a difficult spot by the situation that has unfolded yesterday. does it dig into his ability to talk about the former president as a threat to democracy? if he does that how deceit and nuance that how does he make that okay in and lied about wet saw yesterday? that campaign has a lot of rethinking to do how they're going to approach this and an opportunity for both sides are president biden and president trump in terms of how they talk about these things in front of
1:41 pm
the country in a way that is going to inspire people to vote for them. it's a former president followed up the president's remarks earlier with the two words of "truth social" post unite america. martha your coverage will continue there for milwaukee throughout the day and on into tomorrow but thank you for joining us but we appreciate it. >> thathanks martha, see you so. it's basically mentioned a moment ago the present address of the nation hours after an attempt on former president trump's life. how both parties are responding to the president's words coming up next.

1:48 pm
>> absolutely waited a full investigation of how he got close enough for their now reports we have heard from other media outlets may be local law enforcement had seen a shooter we need to know how he was able to get so close to donald trump. and look i think president biden at donald trump have both said the right things in the last 24 hours about unity, about taking down the temperature. one of the key questions heading into this week is whether it will stay focused on getting more information or whether the political rhetoric will ratchet back up i hope it does and as you said there's a lot of questions still unanswered today bigots hold for just a minute will come back to both of you. right now let's go to the secret service briefing. >> national service special security especially as they relate to the republican national convention a in the democratic national convention is a $50 million since 2004. obviously things cost a little more than what they did in 2004. and so it via phone, trips to washington d.c. and work with

thing everybody got out of that alive is doing well. we mourn for the people who were injured and also killed. calling for unity after that is the easy right thing to do. in terms of moving forward with this convention is going to look like you're milwaukee, i got off the plane today a lot of shaken rnc delegates. people who were also very excited to get to work here on behalf of the president's agenda. not just a number of speeches here as the official convention there's lots of workshops, conferences all week long where people are going to lead discussions about what they want for the future of the country for think most importantly you have heard from donald trump, from melania trump from his campaign calling for unity since saying his success for everyone including economic plans of the way will move the country for it is what we are focused on at this time. for the sake of the country we want to move forward together. >> katie will get an update soon will be right back.

are scared and want to have confidence in the secret service, the fact that they haven't sent someone out to answer basic questions i have a feeling that the early have answers some of these things don't take that long to figure out in their up there talking about the convention and with this question as you mentioned about guns being allowed in the soft perimeter. if we have different gun laws in this country, maybe yesterday, the shooter wouldn't of been able to buy the assault style rifle. >> katie do you feel the same? >> i want to talk about the secret service, they refused to come out late last night to answer questions about this i agree that the that they're not answering questions today even a little bit of detail about what went on is absolutely outrageous and if you want answers about what happened and you want to see the footage there's plenty of information and details about the reaction and video evidence and how much time the secret service taking shots with the

shooter and people in the crowd pointing out the suspect in the shooter on the roof, there is unlimited amounts of information that people can look at and the fact the secret service is not giving any detail is a real problem. i have been on threads and in touch with the number of people over the course of the past 24 hours, former military and snipers and people at homeland security, work, national security and everybody is outraged about how this entire situation was able to play out. the fact that there was a ladder out of building, how did it get there, the fact that this person was allowed to walk over with a firearm in a place that was supposed to be secure, back of communication clearly between local law enforcement in the service and the time that this person was allowed to get shots off before they were eliminated as a threat. congress has launched a number of investigations in the american people deserve a lot of answers. most importantly the former president of the united states deserves answers as he continues his campaign and has to rely on the secret service to keep him
