8:02 am
the 81-year-old would look like. his team says that is not going to happen. this is "the faulkner focus." i'm john roberts in for harris this friday. a week filled with a deluge of reports. democrats at the highest levels quietly urging the president to step aside. one says even former president barack obama thinks biden's path to winning is greatly diminished. chris coons with this. >> i think he weighed seriously the input of those who he trusts and admires. i won't get into the details. he deserves the respect of being able to reflect on this moment. >> john: biden's campaign team is quick to comment doubts. biden world seethes as dems move to dump him. former president donald trump's campaign is pouncing on the democratic party chaos that happened to be unfolding at the same time as their convention this week. we have demonstrated to the
8:03 am
american people that not only is the republican party unified but we have a unifying vision for the entire country with president trump's agenda. the democrats can't figure out who their nominee should be. senior white house correspondent jackui heinrich with the latest for us from the north lawn. >> members of the president's family have reportedly discussed what his exit from the campaign might look like should he decide to make that decision. but publicly the campaign is saying that biden will be back on the trail as soon as he tests negative for covid. >> of course he has covid right now and so he has mild symptoms but back on the campaign trail next week and continue to do this. this is definitely a hard period for the campaign. >> people closest to the president admit the pressure is getting to him including ron klain, his former chief of staff and long time right-hand man and senator chris coons.
8:04 am
>> this weekend he will be resting and reflecting in delaware. he has covid now, which will limit the number of events and outreach that he can do. but my message to my friends, my colleagues in the democratic party is we have a great record to run on. a generation of capable of talented democrats and a talented and capable president. we need to move forward together. >> yesterday senator john tester was the second senate democrat to call for biden's withdrawal with chuck schumer's permission. the campaign was not surprised by this. tester is in a tough race and needs to distance himself from the president. the campaign wouldn't be surprised if members in similarly tough races like sherrod brown or bob casey did the same. casey would be more of a blow because of biden's connection to the state. what the campaign does not want to see is more calls for biden to withdraw coming from members in deep blue districts.
8:05 am
>> they aren't going to win the senate. as it became the personal interest of these congressional leaders that they started to ratchet up the pressure and that's when it will get to the inner circle. they will have to convince him is in president biden's interest. the biden legacy's interest to make this change. >> tester's announcement followed reports that chuck schumer, hakeem jeffries, nancy pelosi and even barack obama all view the president's path to victory as very bleak and want him to really think about this decision. none of those people denied those reports and meantime the date for the dnc to schedule their formal nomination for the president with what has been planned as a virtual roll call vote, that date is still in flux. >> john: jackui, thank you. headline after headline showing how dire the situation is for democrats right now. a fresh wave of democratic doubt
8:06 am
as fissures deepen. democrats are in chaos and en -- doug collins from georgia, jose, let's start with you. former secretary for the dnc. axios is saying biden could pull out as soon as this weekend. you heard the campaign manager saying he will be on the campaign trail next week. he is in it until he is not? >> there is no question that time is running out for the president to make a decision. i care about joe biden and supported joe biden and there is no better president than joe biden but looking at the polls and looking at the way things are going, i think he should step aside and drop out and someone else has to pick up moving forward. >> john: you think it is time for him to step aside. doug, if he steps aside, what
8:07 am
happens then? >> i think the chaos in the democratic party continues. it is amazing to hear what i just heard that you went through a primary season that many of us have been complaining and talking about the problems with the biden administrations and issues not being able to communicate, having a prosecutor actually say we can't put him on trial because he couldn't even answer questions. these are things that have been building way before the debate and now we have the democratic party deciding they want to overturn their own primary that they were forcing people out including robert f. kennedy, jr. and others and they want to overturn the vote on a bad debate performance that we've seen before. that's shocking when you come off a republican party that's united and this sort of building overthrow inside the democratic party. >> john: then consider this, too. liberal media outlets, critics say were complicit in covering up president biden's -- now they
8:08 am
are changing their tune. >> president biden is like bruce willis's character in the movie the sixth sense. the only one who seems unaware of his grim fate. >> i've been talking to a lot of people and i've come across one who still is riding for biden, okay? honestly just -- i'm not advocating, i'm analyzing. the walls are closing in. >> the drips and leaks might be the think to break the dam. >> john: added this. there is a palpable sense that the ground has shifted underneath biden even among some of the president's internal backers who believe the writing is on the wall. jose, it is kind of ironic that a lot of these people who work in the mainstream media have been -- i don't want to say offering cover for biden but certainly down playing the issues that outlets like fox news have been noticing for years now and suddenly they are on the band wagon maybe things have to change. >> look, there is no question.
8:09 am
we have to remember and be real that at the end of the day we have the information -- [inaudible] they want to go for the headlines and i'm making more money. at the end of the day the american people want to decide if joe biden needs to step aside and another candidate takes his place. we have 90 days for the party to unite behind this candidate. i believe we can do that. aside from being joe biden or whoever the candidate is, there is a huge movement that don't want trump to become president. they don't want a dictator in place. they don't want to become the next venezuela. whoever the candidate is democrats will unite and come back and say we have to -- >> john: if he drops out it could make chicago 2024 look a lot like chicago 1968 where he go in with an undetermined candidate and battle it out on the floor. that could be one for the ages.
8:10 am
listen to this. a new column in the "new york times" says if the left wants a new nominee it is time for democrats to hold hands and jump, there is no salvaging this campaign. biden has lost his party's competence. it is in a downward spiral. they need to push for the quick et and most decisive end possible for the crisis. the question is how do they do this? do they have a mini primary prior to the convention as some people suggested and how do you organize that so quickly? convention is a month away. do they have an open convention like they did in 1968 and the you know what show that became? or do they do something else? do they simply anoint kamala harris? what do you think? >> look at it. look at what we've just heard here. the people will decide about joe biden. that's not what is happening right now. it is the democrat elites, those in congress and senate scared
8:11 am
for their own jobs saying whoop, we covered this up. thought he could get through and hold the senate and take the house. we can't do that now. we have to get rid of joe. that isn't the people saying we don't want joe biden. then to actually now say we'll have a primary. remember, they have a problem with ohio. they have to do this virtually. a lot of this will be done behind the scenes. nobody will get to see it. and then to say the only thing that is against donald trump and we talk about throw out the language of dictator and venezuela, looks like a democratic party better look in the mirror. they are the one overthrowing their own presidential nominee. >> john: one interesting point. if the chicago convention in august looked like 1968, everybody would be watching to see what would happen and that may give the democratic some new energy. we'll see. thank you for being here. appreciate it. shocking admission from police sources about the attempted
8:12 am
assassination of donald trump. why they lost track of the gunman moments before shots rang out. plus the secret service director facing more backlash over the agency's response that day. >> i want to know where the breakdown of communications occurred. i don't know what it was going to take for secret service to address the situation and the question is why did they receive all these red flags and still allow the president to take the stage. >> john: pressure is building. kara frederic in "focus" coming up next.

the big question in this investigation is how in the world that rooftop was left uncovered? in the world of the secret service and presidential campaign events it is an absolute no no for an elevated platform with line of sight toward where the president is going to be is unprotected. do you theories what might have happened? >> we aren't getting the full picture here. this is physical security 101. the fact that rooftop was not secured is a massive oversight. in terms of theorizing on what happened it is critical for a security plan to have your local law enforcement and state officials and federal authorities all coordinating. it appears there was some sort of lapse in coordination here. the bigger question is there are reports that he was surveilling president trump's movements over the course of months. how do we not know how he was
8:20 am
surveilling? what digital platforms was he using to do it? every time of -- it's a digital exhaust. they should be able to track down his geo location based off the digital surveillance platforms he was supposedly using and have a pattern this kid, content to paint a more intelligence picture to get after this guy. the fact it wasn't done beforehand and doesn't appear -- they don't appear to be exploiting that data accurately for the public to see how is a massive oversight as well. >> john: intriguing development according to michael waltz from florida. in the briefing with the secret service and f.b.i. members of congress were told that crooks had three encrypted accounts on overseas platforms. i don't think the nature of the platforms was described. we don't know if they were financial or social media or
8:21 am
some other kind of account. there now appears to be some sort of international component to all of this. >> i think this is so interesting, too. something i did for almost ten years with the government and big tech companies. what you do is extract data from these platforms and figure out who were the platforms he was using even if encrypted. who was he talking to. what are the i.p. addresses. can you geo locate him to those physical locations? tech companies can do that. was he using aliases. where are the connections to that network via the platforms? we don't know the nature of those encrypted overseas accounts but there are people in the government and outside of the government who can work to exploit that information that those accounts would convey. the hearing next week should give us a lot of answers. this is happening. the public is not aware of what's actually going on. >> john: a bigger question in all of this is given the
8:22 am
security failures and how these erupted and the fact we know almost nothing about crooks and what his motivations might have been. does there need to be in the wake of the kennedy assassination the warren commission was struck. it was a lot of political cover for lyndon johnson. do we need something of that level to look into this? >> i completely agree with that, yes. congress has oversight capabilities and you look at the senators trying to track down the head of secret service walking away from them not as a reverse of how this is supposed to work. our senators and represent ifbs represent the america people and head of the federal agencies work for us. they work for us. she should not be evading the questions. a measure of transparency the american people are owed. this does not pass the smell test. the fact that a 20-year-old would not have a heavy social media presence or minimal presence at all and that in the face of that he would have better operational security than the seasoned al qaeda operatives
8:23 am
that i tracked down over the course of years doesn't pass the smell test. the american people deserve answers. let's give it to them, congress. >> john: if one 20-year-old can breach security. if iran sent a trained team, god knows what would have happened that day. kara, great to talk to you. appreciate it. a lot more to come on this. paul mauro is live in butler, pennsylvania with more. what have you been able to glean over the last couple of hours? >> well, i think the most interesting story line that has emerged is the role of the local butler township police officers. they were among the local caught ray assigned to the detail and given exclusive traffic control. they get a radio alert on their radios, that matters. the communications here are in question. they get an alert there is a
8:24 am
suspicious male. perhaps a threat. four break off their post and run into the event, which they had not been at. two of them then go towards the building that ultimately crooks is found on. it looks like some of the people, civilians just attending were pointing at the building. those two followed that direction and those are the two, one of whom scooped his hands to give the other officer a boost. that second officer manages to get at roof level from the outside of the building, puts his hands on the railing and looks up over the lip of the building. crooks turns to him with the riffle pointed at the officer. he gets on the ground and says i choirs a target and the story line developing out here according to officials in butler county is that that incident might have actually spurred
8:25 am
crooks to rush his operation starting to shoot then. we'll never know what the result would have been had he not rushed it but it does look like that the action that those officers took might have made him move more quickly and had a real impact on the way this all shook out. >> john: i mentioned the same thing yesterday. maybe the president's life was saved because the officers encountered him. let me drill down quick on one part of what you said. when the officer dropped down from the lip of the roof he got on the channel and said there is a guy with a gun on top of the roof in line of sight of the president. yet the president continued to speak. where did the breakdown occur? >> so the communications as i said at the top are really in question, you are exactly right. it looks like the standard practice in a thing like this generally is going to be when you have so many agencies. another thing that's beginning to emerge here. there was butler township. there was homeland security officers. there was a secret service which
8:26 am
has the ticket as the main agency. there was also the state police. there were also apparently county counter sniper teams here. butler county counter sniper teams. one of whom may have fired off a round and may have hit crooks. that's one of the other story lines developing here. when you have so many people involved, you need tight communications. the way this worked the communications from the people in the field go into the main command post, a tent set up to run the whole thing. the way this thing generally works is each agency has their overhead stationed in that command post and those bosses are supposed to be speaking to each other in realtime. so the question becomes, as you articulate, was that alert immediately apparent to the secret service snipers and all ships at sea or dependent upon communications inside the tent. that usually happens quickly.
8:27 am
i've been involved in these things. not clear why it seems to have taken as long as it did for snipers the engage. >> john: so many questions and coming out in dribs or drabs or the f.b.i. or secret service or homeland security telling us what we have so far. nobody can understand why that hasn't happened. paul mauro, thank you. >> thank you. >> john: breaking news on the divide growing over president biden's re-election bid. four more house democrats want biden to step aside. a total of 27 congressional democrats. 10% of the party's representation now calling on him to bow out. that means 90% haven't weighed in. among the new four house democrats. the first member of the congressional black caucus for biden to withdraw and one from the hispanic conference.
