in 2020, he needs to clinch the state as well as pennsylvania and georgia if he hopes to win this election. here he comes to north carolina and the folks i have been talking to that are coming to this rally, they are hurting by inflation, by the economy, even those business owners, small business owners, and they want to hear trump's policies on how he is going to fix it. this is what the trump campaign put out today about the cpi numbers that were unveiled today and about kamala harris and her policies. they write this: "under kamala harris everything costs 20% more than it did under president trump. president trump has a proven track record of making his country prosperous and affordable, and americans can trust him to put more money back in their pockets." i imagine that is the kind o isf language you are going to hear today from trump. this again is one of those seven battleground states that the trump campaign is focused on. the super pac maga inc. is actually spending $100 million, that's how much money they are
10:07 am
dumping into north carolina and those battleground states from now until labor day, and this rally comes, guys, as trump tries to recalibrate and refocus his strategy against a brand-new opponent as some conservatives out there are imploring him to really stop with the personal attacks come up with that to the side and stick to the issues and the economy. here is how inflation is hitting those north carolina voters. listen. >> i think it's horrible. and, i mean, gas and grocery prices are just out seen. it's unbelievable. >> i live for the american dream. i am the first one in college. and i think trump is for the people. and because of the economy, we are struggling right now. >> that's a filipino immigrant, bill. she came here to live the american dream. she says now she is paying the american high prices. vice president kamala harris scheduled to swing through north carolina, as well, coming friday and expected to unveil

spent a lot of time there. that's where this economic message is now going to be focused. speaking of focus, you heard the sound bite from nikki haley talking to bret last night on "special report," then got to talk about what kamala harris' record is. went on to say he has to focus, independence, suburban women, college educated, bret pusher, do you think they are doing t that? >> it's a challenge with trump and what his staff is always pushing to do and that is why they are talking about what he is going to say today but he likes to go off script and i think part of the challenge in this other conversation of what kamala harris may do is you want to go to a friendly place, a friendly sounding board, a friend the audience. that is usually a mistake because the more friendly you think it is, the more relaxed you are. we saw some of that with trump at elon musk just the other night. he was relaxed and went on too long, mistakes happen when you
10:10 am
do that. if kamala harris goes somewhere friendly, that is much more likely to happen, as well. north carolina is interesting, bill hit on this, asheville is a liberal city but once you get just outside of downtown charlotte, more conservative. trump last time visited fletcher north carolina where my buddy lives and facetimed him once, the voters trump is trying to appeal to. i would also add a very fast-growing segment of north carolina are hispanic voters. advertise and spend money on hispanic media because the rnc chair michael whatley is from north carolina. he is going to make sure there is well-funded for the north carolina republicans there up and down the ballot. >> shannon: let's look at this. in the battleground states when we ask people what their problems are, michigan, minnesota, pennsylvania, wisconsin, we've got the numbers here, that is what people are focused on. it is a daily reality check every time you get gas and groceries and pay the rent, a message both sides have got to

find a way to connect on. >> the economic message is certainly the place where we have to lean as democrats. just today the news that inflation is down to its lowest percentage since 2021, i think that's great news for the vice president as she leans in on her message with her big economic policy speech on friday, but also the interesting thing about the former president visiting north carolina and now becoming bullish in north carolina and now having to be on defense in north carolina, it says everything about the kamala momentum we are starting to see, when you see 60,000 republicans on a call organizing organically on her behalf, when you see their rallies and the crowd size and the money being raised. you see untraditional partners say that we care about democracy and freedom and obviously without her giving a sitdown interview, which she said she will, voters are starting to lean in and galvanize around her from what she is saying directly to the american people, that is
10:12 am
more important sitting down for an interview that the chattering class suggests need to happen. >> shannon: i think average americans and want to hear that because she has positions on tape in 2019 as part of the 2020 campaign that now it is not even her coming out to say these are not my positions, it is coming from campaign staffers and other people. there needs to be some kind of explanation from her. there has been an evolution on these issues, if she has changed, that is important. before i let you go, i want to play this from a voter in philadelphia who says all those polls that kamala momentum -- if i'm getting that right. >> don't steal my word. >> shannon: trademarked by antjuan. here is what she says. >> how hard has inflation hit you? >> it's hitting me hard. i blame the federal government at this point. a working-class mom who works as a paralegal cannot buy a $2 bill because it is now $5, imagine a

gubernatorial primaries yet so we don't even know who the candidates are, but given new hampshire's leftward drift in the presidential elections and sununu strong republican brand, fox predicts this will be a toss-up. carolina leading democrat but should be interesting, given itt splitting, republicans have won all but one presidential race there since 1980, but democratic governors have won all but the reelections over the same period. to summarize our new fox news power rankings, this week, fox forecasts that the control it, the battle for the senate is a toss-up likely to be decided by races in nevada, ohio, and montana. fox forecasts the race for the control of the house is also a toss-up, with a slight edge to republicans, ultimately decided by these 19 toss-up, hotly contested races. a new monmouth university poll out today shows voter enthusiasm

it is great to be there, enjoying the environment, eating great space food and being able to look out the window, so i know that they are making the best of this time, but i am sure they are eager for a decision just like the rest of us. >> bill: he is putting on the best face he can there, mike. these two may not come home until next year. >> yeah, that's a possibility. they haven't decided that yet but it is certainly a possibility. >> bill: looks plain to us with the issue is. they are attached to the international space station. to blast away you need to have power and thrust and at the moment they are not convinced they have it? >> they are backing off from that, he little more delicate, you don't want -- it is a maneuver where you separate. than the major burn comes later with the propulsion module when you orbit. what they are concerned about with the thrusters, they had problems with, 28 thrusters onboard, they had a malfunction as they were going out to dock
10:47 am
if you months ago, where five of them failed. four of them are now back online, which is plenty because they have 28 total so they are only down one right now, but i think the issue what they're reporting is more understanding what that problem was, they have tried to recreate it on the ground, and they have, and trying to correlate to what they have seen in space, but it seems they are not 100% comfortable they know what the problem was or what caused it and is not going to happen. >> bill: it's got to be an embarrassment for boeing, for sure. this was a big deal, hate had been delayed repeatedly, and i guess if they stay on board they are okay, if they make the decision to go ahead and push away, that is where the drama comes in. >> as far as their reentry goes, they come back in the starliner, i think that's what you are asking? >> bill: yes. >> if they clear the vehicle to come back with the crew inside -- the vehicle is coming back one way or another. one point in the press conference today, it is cleared for an emergency so if there is
10:48 am
an emergency on board and they need to abandon ship -- never happened, very unlikely -- that spaceship is cleared for them to come back for them in an emergency. if they decide to keep them on board and bring them home another way, the starliner will still come back empty. so they will still be able to study it that way. they will still get the spaceship back. they are going to collect data i don't think they do that -- >> bill: i've got 8 million questions come i don't have a million minutes. if they need supplies or food, can they get -- >> not an issue. they have extras and supply ships going up regularly. that's not an issue. >> bill: could someone like spacex and e elon musk ten a rescue mission? >> the option they would pursue, a spacex vehicle was supposed to go up in august, it's been delayed until september. there is four seats on board. they would pull two people off of that cummins ended up with two people. what would happen is suni and butch were kind of drawing that
10:49 am
crew in their expedition for six months or so and then come back, four of them would come back in february. the starliner would remain on orbit for however long they wanted to keep it there but eventually that would come back uncrude. that is the decision to make it about a week and a half. they've got to figure that out because they have to get ready for the launch in september. >> bill: being an astronaut up there a couple times, would you support that? >> i would support whatever my bosses said. can bowersox, you heard his voice, joel, chief of the astronaut office, i've known them 30 years or so, i've known them a long time, maybe not that long, but around that order, and i trust them totally, and i know sodas butch and suni, and that whole team, that is what i would be saying. >> bill: he is saying the food is really good, i don't know. >> i'm one of only two astronauts that gained weight in space. and i did it twice, the other guy only did it once, so you are asking the wrong guy appeared i like the food. >> bill: thank you so much.
10:50 am
come back in a week and we will wait to hear what nasa tells us on this. good to see you. >> you bet. >> bill: here is shannon in d.c. >> shannon: by the way, i gained wait running a marathon. that's two of us. vice president harris let mike ready till layout her policy for voters but proving difficult as she continues dodging media interviews and news conferences, how are they supposed to know what they are voting for? jim garrity is on deck to react. >> bill: also the opposite of a mask mandate, live in new york where they are doing something for the first time in the nation's history. nate, what's up? >> hey, bill. starting today in nassau county, you can only wear a face mask in public for two reasons. next we are going to tell you what those reasons are and the big challenge for police in enforcing this new law. s thpur-. and it responds to snoring, so you don't have to.

nassau county meeting last night, activists opposed to a masked man was removed. making it a misdemeanor to wear a face covering in public. voigt is in mineola new york to tell us more. there are some exceptions may be to this law? >> that's exec leave right, shannon. you can still wear a face mask in nassau county on long island if it is for a medical or a religious reason, and it will be up to police to determine sort of the intent behind the face mask. but what you can no longer do is wear a face mask just to conceal your identity. this is mainly for public safety reasons. nassau county executive bruce blakeman signed the bill into law a couple hours ago at this point. some critics have free-speech concerns, but blakeman says the law is meant to help track down people who commit crimes while wearing masks. >> public safety measure. what we have seen as people using masks to shoplift, took

carjacked, to rob banks. >> so blakeman also said the anti-israel protest at columbia university partly inspired the law. republican nassau county legislator spoke about that today. >> we are not going to allow anyone to attack our jewish brothers and sisters. >> now some people are really upset with the law. one woman got kicked out of a county meeting last week, while the nyc lu says in part, "criminal activity is already actionable by law enforcement and concerns that masks disguise crime must not be answered by banning anonymous protest." here in nassau county if you are caught violating the law it is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. send it back to you, shannon. >> shannon: nate foy, thank you so much. >> bill: any moment now, biden economic advisor jared bernstein will join the white house
