covering the protest right here in chicago, hi, steve. >> preparations underway for a full day of protests and you can see behind me what it looks like. we have several hundred science victory to the palestinian resistance and emancipating to the right of that. mainly college-age students with reflective vest and others trying to learn how to tie a comfy around their head or neck and 40 or 50 megaphones there. they negotiate a hard with the city for the permission for these marches for a platform, and for speakers for their speeches tonight. the protest already got underway on sunday. they were nonviolent but very bitter and a lot of chance about genocide and trailed by chicago police on bicycles. a lot of business owners not taking chances. many saying they are already beginning to board up their store windows. >> we have experience with this in the city doesn't have a great

track record with protecting their businesses or their citizens property. so we wanted to be preemptive and board up in the advance of the democratic convention. >> law enforcement officials say the secret service and the police have been working together for more than a year to prepare for this. they say any violence will be stopped immediately. they negotiated the key people in a 1 mile loop three blocks from the convention center. the first of two major march is expected to begin early this afternoon. guys, back to you. >> bill: steve, i guess you are a mile from our location. does that sound right to you? >> that is right. >> bill: is there a possibility that the big problem in 1968 is the protesters broke out of the area where they were allowed to protest. from what you are hearing from them, is there any plans to be more aggressive that you have seen so far? >> where we are now organized

here and they had all these backpacks saying they were medics. this guy is wearing a pin that says "make it great like '60 and shut down the dnc like gaza." we will see how controlled this can be but a smaller crowd last night when you look at the broader perspective of the people coming to chicago to cause problems. of course, a newspaper had to pay a couple of dollars to get one of those, which is ironic. but interesting crowd of people. some were just there to make a point that is contradictory to other people in the group, but certainly, there were agitators ready. >> dana: listen to mayor johnson and of course the mayor of chicago, about all of this. >> we are ready for this convention and the city of chicago has hosted the most conventions in the country's history because it turns out we are actually good at this. we support the first amendment. we have to protect the rights of individuals to be able to bring their grievances to the leadership and for our party to

respond. >> it is interesting that jessica come in the big scheme of things they issues people care about and issues democrats hear about, this one is at the very bottom, but it's getting so much attention and it has the risk of disrupting things for kamala harris as she tries to unite the party behind her. >> certainly as i get in here and they are supposed to be a half a mile away. things may change with political name out there with them. about what i was most surprised about protesters last night and hearing interviews trickling in this morning, amalgamation of everyone who has a problem. if you have a grievance, you are out there. people from code pink that don't think the harris-biden administration protects abortion rights and lgbqt would not be welcome in palestine to have a free life on any level. they are out there. climate change protesters. >> dana: i was going to bring up with steve harrigan anti-police area there, apparently those guys from atlanta have meet up with them.

not to mention property bays and what it does to the schools, again return on investment. it must take for anybody who talks about public policy to not critically evaluate how you measure the return on investment. when you are strengthening neighborhoods, communities and the economy of those communities and invest in a broad based economy, everybody benefits and it pays for itself in that way. >> bill: i guess i'll people understand that another three the tape and let's hear it again. saying words like return on investment does not mean actual return on investment when it comes to the cost of these policies she is saying she is going to propose. but this will not be about specific details on what is still hiding in terms of the platforms going to be but as you said, reintroduction of her to the world again. she is trying to break out on her own and not as vice president to joe biden but democratic nominee, the new leader of the party. she will try to reintroduce her

vice presidential candidate, tim walz, the governor of minnesota to the room here but also to the country. let's not forget joe biden had to leave the race because he was losing to donald trump but also he had a very hard time getting the democratic base together and the coalition solid behind them going into november. she has that to do tonight, this week, rather, and also, when you have these agitators outside, some of them inside, they have to deal with that as well. i find it quite interesting the party and the nominee to raise money for rioters have plenty of police capable of protecting the building when they are here, but they don't have it when it comes to protecting citizens of chicago of which many have spoken to who said, crime is completely out of control and the schools are failing. >> dana: jessica come i give you the last word. joe biden will pretty much say goodbye, but then he goes back as president for another five months. >> you can do an emotional goodbye without the practical stuff. he will be present obviously until the end of the term.

every democrat i have spoken to is expecting a lot of tears i'm a lot of reflection on joe biden's career up through the senate as vice president and then as president. how he has set the stage for this moment. for kamala to come in with a set of legislative accomplishment she can be proud of. i understand she's deviating on inflation front, but they are really proud what they have done with the american rescue plan, inflation reduction act, and she will be talking a lot about the accomplishments. i hope she does project be on the room. we were talking at the rnc as well, the undecided voters are not here tonight. they will not be here thursday night. they are at home wondering, can we go with this? they are prebut disposed to not like trump so looking for the reason to vote for kamala. >> bill: speaking of weird, joe biden will be on the ground for eight hours max and then he leaves tonight. >> we have a lot of transparency why he laughed either. >> bill: a story to be told, but listen, we have to run.

over the past weekend, we have seen even the media come out and said harris' plan for price control and price gouging was not great. let's look for: number five "washington post," the times demand serious economic ideas. harris supplies gimmicks, cnn, stop price gouging and creates more problems than it solves. do you think talking about price controls will actually help them win back suburban voters like you were able to do? >> well, i don't find inflation reduction act, which fix the price $30 a month saving on many of my constituents of $100 a month or inflation reduction act, which just last week we announced the fixing of price massive cost reduction for some of the ten most expensive and most common drugs for my constituents. i don't find that gimmicky pier that is real savings for folks. i also don't find the fact inflation is going down. it was 2.9% this week, which is the first time it's been under

3% since early 2021. i don't find that gimmicky either. those are real numbers and we are moving the right direction. we are not where we need to be. i grew up in a working class family. i work construction jobs to put my way through college and i worked minimum wage jobs in fast food in high school. i understand what it's like to work paycheck to paycheck. we are not there these policies move us in the right direction. >> dana: would you say larry summers and jason left-leaning economist for working for obama said the inflation reduction act which they warned biden-harris about would cause inflation. i have to take your word the insulin prices are better medicare prices might get better in 2026 when that was in place. at the same time the grocery prices, for example the very thing kamala harris was talking about they say, those are common mistake caused by the inflation reduction act that they passed and that you were talking about. >> no, i disagree with that.

i actually haven't seen those economic analysis. when you say for, save the inflation reduction act causes increase in price of groceries, i have not seen analysis that shows that. in fact, we are moving a better direction. listen, we have the value f actually looking at history to see which economic philosophy and approach works better for americans because we have tried trickle-down economics. we have tried the top-down approach before, several times before. we have tried the biden-harris approach from building from the middle out. we have tried both approaches. what we know looking at trump's tax cuts, the vast vast majority of that value, wealth went to billionaires, the largest corporations and 80% of the value of those tax breaks went to tax buybacks to help ceos, executives, billionaires. whereas our approach to invest in people and infrastructure, education always works better, right? we have never as a country

and they also want to see in the deal permanent cease-fire. i think these are intractable things for israel. i think a deal is unlikely moving forward despite the optimism that the administration has. >> bill: my feeling is they want to push this past the convention to make sure iran does not strike. that is my god since a week ago and i still feel that today. here is the vice president and the sitting president on sunday, jim on this topic. >> a cease-fire sir? >> still underway. we are not giving up. >> i will not speak for him, but i will tell you these conversations are ongoing, and we are not giving up. we will continue to work very hard on this. we've got to get a cease-fire. >> bill: so benjamin netanyahu is saying this, general, there are areas to show flexibility and there are areas we cannot show flexibility and we are standing firm on them.

one of the major demands from hamas as you point out is to get the idea of them out of gaza. that is not going to happen, is it? >> no, i don't see how benjamin netanyahu can do that at all. right now, understand, that there are thousands of gazan fighters that still have the capability to form effective organizations. a lot of them belong to units partially destroyed but hamas is capable of regrouping and rearming these organizations. the idf wants to stay on top of that. if they walk out of gaza and lead thousands of fighters they are with principal leader still alive, i think we all know what will happen. they will declare victory, rearm, regroup, reattack at a time of their convenience. that is a prospect that i don't know how benjamin netanyahu and work cabinet and the people could possibly accept. >> bill: general, thank you for coming on.
