>> john: at this hour we expect to see former president trump at the southern border in arizona one of the hottest sectors for illegal crossing. the border crisis points to be one of the strongest selling points in his reelection bid and one of the biggest vulnerabilities for vice president kamala harris. the former president expected to speak within an hour. welcome back to "america reports" i am john roberts in washington. >> sandra: i wish we had some news peered something to talk about. some live shots. some candidates on the trail. welcome everyone. i am sandra smith in new york and the news is moving fast. fox polls show the majority of voters trust trump over harris to do a better job on border security and immigration. the former president and his running mate j.d. vance are looking to press the advantage on this issue. by talking about that issue into battleground states. the dnc as he may have noticed is virtually ignoring the
11:02 am
situation at the southern border during the convention this week. >> it is kamala harris and the democrats who are running as far away as possible from even talking about this issue because it has been an epic failure under her watch as the open borders are. she owns this catastrophe and president trump is correct to highlight this very significant difference. >> john: up republican texas governor greg abbott joins us moments for now. >> sandra: will be begin with alicia acuna's who is live there in arizona for us where the former president is set to deliver remarks a short time from now. what do we know about what we are about to hear? >> hi sandra, hi john. excuse me. we are going to be hearing from the former president and about an hour here. i'm here in cochise county. this is the biggest sector, along the u.s.-mexico border according to usb and the sheriff here mark daniels is gog
11:03 am
to be one of the people meeting with trump today and he made this comparison on fox and friends this morning. >> when president trump was in office there were less than 2 million sentinel pills in arizona seized. last year at 111 million functional pills were seized in arizona alone. look at the difference. >> as kamala harris takes the stage tonight in chicago, polls show the u.s.-mexico border is one of her biggest vulnerabilities. fox news polling shows trump leads harris by 19 points and 14 points on immigration. a closer look at both candidates policies and statements on the border specifically on immigrants becoming u.s. citizens, harris acknowledging the system needs fixing. >> we know what it takes to fix it. comprehensive reform. that includes strong border
11:04 am
security and an earned pathway to citizenship. speak out they harris walz campaign has not released details on how that would look but on monday the democratic national committee released the final party platform which includes specifics including a call to implement the u.s. citizenship act. this is a democratic house bill introduced in may of last year that outlines a pathway for some already in the country and creates a new status called lawful perspective immigrants. for his part to former president statements have been pretty straightforward and he has not mentioned a path to citizenship. >> if kamala wins you will have mass amnesty and citizenship for all of the biden-harris illegals that poured into our country. if i when you will have the largest deportation operation in american history starting at noon on inauguration day 2025.
11:05 am
>> john and sandra we will be waiting in cochise county. the president is set to arrive within the hour. back to you. >> sandra: thank you. >> john: looking forward to that. we will see you soon. right now let's bring in greg abbott the republican governor of the great state of texas. according to a fox news poll, a record number of people believe that the situation on the southern border is either an emergency or a major problem. the total of that is 87%. the closest it was was back in october of 2023 when 85% of people felt that. where are we now in terms of the border and how does that play into the election? >> listen it plays into the election because as governors and residents and citizens across america have seen, every state is now a border state. it's not something that just happens in texas or arizona. that happens in georgia, and pennsylvania, and wisconsin with regard to the importation of fence and all, with regard to
11:06 am
people losing their lives because of criminals and rapists that have been allowed in with kamala harris being in charge of the border. it was amazing moments ago on your clip she said that we know how to fix the border. they have had the ability to fix the border for more than three and a half years now and because they have not only failed to do that but because they have adopted the catch and release policies that president trump had gotten rid of they have now allowed in more than 11 million illegal immigrants. many of whom they don't know where they are right now. many of whom are known rapists, murders, and even terrorists. americans are threatened now more than ever because of the reckless open border policies that were allowed by kamala harris. >> john: went to the point that you just made here is a new ad from the harris campaign touting how calmly would be the
11:07 am
solution to our wards at the bo. listen here. >> as president she will hire thousands of more border agents and crackdown on fentanyl and human trafficking. fixing the border is tough. so is kamala harris. >> john: as you pointed out she was appointed border czar back in march of 2021. what has she been doing for the past three and a half years? why is she only turned in her eye toward fixing it now and is terms of how broken it has become look at the statistics for the tucson sector which includes cochise county there appeared under bite in february 21 to july 2024, 1,211,886 illegal entries compared that to trump. under biden it is almost an over us 400% increase in illegal crossings ai. >> this is easy for voters to see what is going on. the facts are the facts. the facts are that when president trump left office, the
11:08 am
lowest illegal border crossings and over 45 years and after biden-harris took over we've had without a doubt the largest illegal border crossings ever but remember this also when kamala first ran for president she articulated several policies that she believed in such as saying that immigrants should not be treated as criminals. they wanted to give free health care to illegal immigrants and they want to abolishites. they were against the wall. here is my point. everything she said when she first ran for president is what she is for. she has a record as well as an articulated vision for what she wants to achieve and it has devastated the united states of america. all americans must know this simple thing. if kamala harris becomes president as bad as things have been under joe biden, they will
11:09 am
be even worse under kamala harris as concerns our broken border. >> john: the sheriff there and cochise county, we've had him on many times. he has been highly critical of the biden-harris administration but not everyone is. listen to javier salazar who is the bexar county sheriff and what he said at the dnc last night. >> when donald trump comes down to texas, stands next to officers in uniform just like mine, he has not there to help us. don't think that. not for a second. he is a self-serving man. kamala on the other hand has been fighting border crime for years. she has gone down to mexico and worked to stop the traffickers and when the traffickers did not stop, she put them in jail. >> john: what do you make of that governor? >> it's wrong for two ways. one is by the policies that kamala has implemented, she has facilitated border crime by
11:10 am
ending catch and release, by allowing illegal immigrants to come and who are very dangerous and go across the entire country and commit mayhem. the second thing i will tell you and that is the sheriff that was just talking there is not actually a border sheriff. what i know for a fact is president trump has been on the border with me as well as with sheriff's on the border. the border sheriff's rally behind president trump because they know he is the only president who has ever really stepped up and it secured the and provided those local border sheriff's the resources and the tools and the support that they need to better secure the bo border. >> john: governor we look forward to at the former president has to say in the minutes ahead. thank you sir for joining us. sandra, we should point out that kamala harris is running away from the title of border czar as quickly as she can't. in fact if you take a look at what a lot of the media has written about it.
11:11 am
here's what axios said regarding her title as the border czar. internally harris' team at her office made clear that her responsibilities began and ended with the factors driving people to leave guatemala, honduras, and el salvador. so-called root causes. nobody ever appointed me border czar. i am not the vice president. i could've told you from not leaving this desk what is driving people to leave those countries for the united states. i'm not sure how much of an accomplishment. >> sandra: but you can roll tape on her saying stop don't come. she initially thought that was her role. and by the way she was referenced as heading up the border in multiple interviews after biden announced that role and did not dispute that fact. we have rolled tape on that as well. so she can run away from it but will she talk about the crisis at the southern border and beyond by the way because this is something that is affecting people all over the country. you saw through the primary season, you saw it in the
11:12 am
fox news voter analysis. this was the top issue for so many voters. coast-to-coast, john. so she can run away from it but what it will do to the american people who deeply cares what this problem is a big question. >> john: she took that title and put it in a little lock box and put it in the lowest drawer of her desk. >> sandra: more on that in just a moment. meanwhile vice president harris speaking of which will be giving her big convention speech tonight and accepting the democrat nomination. all without giving a single extended interview. senior white house correspondent jacqui heinrich is live in chicago. obviously the trump advance ticket is focusing on this. there was a joke as vance was speaking a moment ago. thank you for taking questions the crowd said. senator pelosi is also at the dnc. tell us about that. >> there is quite a lot to talk about with that, sander appeared on your first question there's a lot of reports that tonight the vice president is going to use her time on the spotlight to tell life story much like her

much lesser known vice presidential nominee even though she has been serving as vice president for the last three and a half years there are a lot of questions that remain about some of her more progressive policy positions and reported reversals on them. she has yet to speak to those fully including reversals on fracking, on single-payer health care system, on an assault weapons buyback program. and there are reportedly some tensions between more progressive democrats and the centrists over how she should handle big issues like immigration and israel if she is to win in november. however the tensions earlier in the week were all about joe biden. harris stayed pretty far away from their nights. she kept the plan to be in milwaukee for obama's night and she was also not here for pelosi speaking last night. just trying to keep a respectful distance on that all of that tension with joe biden still licking his wounds after being forced to make his decision and

markets are competitive and f fair! >> but without full details of how it will be paid for, analysts have said that her plan could add nearly $2 trillion to the national debt. specifically looking at some items expanding the child tax credit that was enacted during the pandemic will cost $1.1 trillion in her plan to provide $25,000 in a federal down payment assistance to first-time home buyers would cost $100 billion. people do want things like affordable housing and affordable goods, but economists argue that spending like this would only make inflation worse making those very same goods even more expensive and there is a real concerns about what price controls would do to the economies and businesses. harris is promising a first ever ban on price gouging for food and groceries but many argue price controls don't work and it hasn't been made clear how they would even determine that price gouging is happening. with food producers pointing out the grocery store margins were

at 1.6% last year. and again, there is no explanation as to how this would all be paid for but we can look at harris said she would raise the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28% and that would help fund some of these spending initiatives but this is just part of the pie. we have not heard anything about her foreign policy or anything about her energy policy, both of those things could add even more spending to her budget into the deficit. and sandra. >> sandra: very important issues to american voters. madison alworth in chicago for us. thank you. >> john: let's bring in matt bennett third way cofounder and former president bill clinton's white house deputy assistant. i feel nostalgic the last time i was at a dnc convention in chicago was 1996 when bill clinton accepted the nomination for the second time. kamala harris tonight does the same thing bill clinton did so many years ago and here is what "the wall street journal" editorial board wrote about what lies ahead. kamala harris takes the chicago stage on thursday and the

culmination of one of the most audacious bats in recent political history. in 100 days, democrats can turn the copilot of an unpopular presidency into the reincarnation of barack obama's movement for hope and change. that sounds like some pretty impressive political gymnastics. can she do it? >> so far, so good. this has been a remarkable change in this party. no one has ever seen anything like it in the last 3-4 weeks democrats have gone from feeling like we were marching towards our doom to feeling like we are really in this. everyone knows this will be a very competitive rates. the race is essentially tied now but we think we can win and that is a very, very big boost to our enthusiasm here and that is why you have seen such tremendous unity. you have the same level of response to hillary clinton and to aoc, our party which has two distinct wings is very united right now.

accomplishments and some of the challenges of the bite and harris years and we have been very clear as a party in the last three nights and we will be again tonight that that is the direction generally speaking that she wants to go. of course the future is going to look different from the past. there will be new things but let me say this. in 2016 hillary clinton, we counted paired she had 295 policy ideas on her website that went from alzheimer's to zeke appeared donald trump in 2016 had 7 and one of them was respect the police which is not a policy idea. so policy ideas don't win elections and her job over the next course of the months is to win the election. you run in poetry -- you campaign in poetry and you run the country and pros. we will see more details but for the most part what she will talk about our values and that's what americans vote on. >> john: okay. he laid out some of the things that she has accomplished during the biden-harris administration. some of those things include
