1:01 am
defense forces say that overnight, they preemptively struck several hezbollah targets in lebanon. we've been following that story, although some of those rockets from hezbollah in lebanon did make their way into israel. i'm kevin corke in washington, and i'm chanley painter in new york. you're right, kevin, hezbollah striking 11 targets, they said. but the idf claims that the iran backed group was preparing to fire missiles and rockets, thousands of them towards the israeli territory. so they preemptively attacked hezbollah. and we know, kevin, tensions in that region have been rising for weeks after the assassination of senior hamas leader, a senior hamas leader and a top hezbollah military commander. that were killed in separate attacks. as you know, iran is blaming israel for both of those deaths, though the israelis claim responsibility for just one, that being the death of the hezbollah commander. now, all this is happening as we continue to monitor ceasefire and hostage
1:02 am
talks between israel and hamas over the weekend, u.s. officials hoping that ceasefire, if it were to come about, could help to calm tensions in the region. we welcome fox news correspondent jeff paul. he has been joining us throughout the morning. and, jeff, we wanted to get an update on what you're hearing about the security council meeting there in israel and any news that might be breaking as we continue to watch daybreak over tel aviv. yeah, kevin and charlie, we know the israeli security cabinet is meeting right now, and that is where top israeli officials are both discussing and deciding what to do next. we're also getting some new information from hezbollah ahead of their leade, hassan nasrallah, who is set to speak a little later today. they put out a statement saying in part, all offensive drones were launched at their designated times from all their positions. thus armed our military operation for today
1:03 am
has been completed and accomplished. now, hezbollah had previously referred to what happened earlier in the morning as the, quote, first phase, and it very well could be just the beginning, as israel has placed the entire country under an emergency situation for the next 48 hours. so israel must now wait to see what is going to happen in the future. will hezbollah be satisfied with the hundreds of rockets and drones fired at israel, or will it seek to further escalate? this all started early this morning local time. israel launched a wave of airstrikes targeting hezbollah infrastructure using roughly 100 fighter jets. this was a preemptive strike after israeli intelligence received information that hezbollah was mounting a massive attack on israel. hezbollah then fired upwards of 320 rockets and drones, launched mostly at northern israel. now, local media is reporting that hezbollah had plans to launch around 6000 rockets and uavs, both towards central and northern israel. but israel's
1:04 am
preemptive strike obviously dampened that. so now the region must stand by to see what is often one of the most tense moments during these exchanges. we also have these ongoing peace negotiations in cairo, egypt. we are learning that the israeli delegation is still planning on heading there today to meet with both u.s. and egyptian and qatari mediators. no word on hamas's response to this or iran just yet. kevin and jeff, i want to bring in chanley painter for the conversation. as we continue to watch your live pictures and keep an eye on what's happening. chanley you take it from here? sure. so jeff, you mentioned this 48 hour emergency situation there in the country as the leaders in israel determine, what if anything, happens next in this situation. i know that the airplanes were grounded there at the airport in tel aviv for a couple of hours as this unfolded. what else are you seeing? and hearing? i mean, you were there. you're speaking to the people this, unfortunately, is something that they live with virtually
1:05 am
every day, right? well, we have seen images that the airport has reopened, whether or not planes are actually landing. and taking off, that remains to be seen. we are in one of the flight paths for the plans that are the planes that land typically at ben-gurion, and we haven't seen one land just yet. but as far as the israeli people, at least here in tel aviv, people seem to be going about their daily lives. you're seeing a lot of traffic now, picking back up now that it's later in the morning. the one part that is a little weird, though, is that the beach is very quiet. the israeli government is banning people from going to the beach today because they're trying to prevent large groups of people gathering together. obviously, a beach is one of those places, just in case hezbollah decides to launch a second or third phase in the coming hours. i want to ask one more follow up before i send it back to kevin for more questions. but you mentioned hezbollah's response. the leader expected to take to television, i believe, is what you reported to speak later
1:06 am
today. in response. what is the feel as far as a response from hezbollah? will this be suffice it to say, as they can tell their people, you know, we did what we were supposed to. we retaliated. or will it hinge on maybe the possibility of success for the cease fire talks that you said are expected to resume later today? well, that's the big question right now. how is hassan nasrallah going to interpret what happened early this morning? will it be a check mark in the win column for him? and something that he can brag about to the supporters of hezbollah that they did respond, that they did show strength and that they did hit israel with hundreds of rockets and drones? or will he say, this is just the beginning? we'll have to pay very close attention to the words that he uses. but it's going to be an interesting conversation, at least to listen to, because i think on the world stage, you look at what israel did, and it really shows a moment of strength for israel. not only
1:07 am
that, that they have the intelligence to understand that an attack is coming, but also the fact that they have the capabilities to get in there and disrupt it. right. and kevin, over to you, but it reminds me of what you were talking about with aaron cohen earlier, kevin, about this being a blitz from israel, not necessarily an escalation, but let's see what else you have to ask for. jeff, there on the ground. yeah, you're spot on. and remember, as we've been having our conversations throughout the night, we've understood from our analysts across the board that in fact, interdicting a possible attack in this circumstance, jeff, we're talking about 6000 possible rockets. that sounds like an awful lot. and certainly it would be an awful lot if you're in haifa or if you're in heights, if you're even in central israel. and yet it's nowhere near the capability, jeff, of what? unfortunately hezbollah can do. we're talking about potentially hundreds of thousands of rockets. in fact, i was just
1:08 am
doing some research during the break, and it has been reported by some that they've already launched more than 8000 attacks on israel just over the past year. i guess my question in brief, is that we have about 2.5 minutes to go. is what happens from here? yes, we will hear from nasrallah. yes, i imagine we'll also hear from bibi netanyahu. what's the posture moving forward over the next 24 to 48 hours? jeff yeah. it will be interesting to see how we separate what happened this morning and what happens nearly on a daily basis. we get these alerts all the time in the north that there are rockets and drones that are being intercepted by israel's iron dome. those are using groups of a dozen or two dozen nowhere near what happened. this morning. so it will be interesting to see how we separate those two events. will that keep going on? and another point, one of our crew members brought up out here is, is a peace deal. getting close to
1:09 am
wrapping up. and it was this either israel's or hezbollah's last opportunity to get a few shots in because hezbollah sort of has put itself in a corner, and so is iran saying that the only thing holding them back from launching this retaliatory attack was a potential cease fire deal. so is the cease fire deal, in fact, actually getting close? and this was just hezbollah or iran's or israel's last chance to get a strike in before there is a peace deal, because obviously, if those strikes came after, it would certainly make iran and hezbollah look like they were the ones that were escalating the situation here in the middle east. thank you for that, jeff. i want to send it back over to chanley for our last question for this segment. chanley. yeah absolutely. thank you so much, kevin. so, jeff, you mentioned this possible reaction from hezbollah today as far as what we're going to be seeing. we have a couple minutes left here with you. but as far as moving forward today, you said, netanyahu is with the security council. those you
1:10 am
said are meetings that can last for hours. are you hearing that the united states may or may not be involved in speaking with the officials in israel? as far as next steps? well, the u.s. will certainly be speaking with israel over the next 48 hours. obviously, until we get a better understanding of what direction this escalation is heading, and we obviously have a lot of assets in the region, multiple u.s. warships, the uss abraham lincoln just showed up in the arabian sea. so clearly the u.s. not only involved in communication, but also in that defensive posture and also trying to send a message to iran and to hezbollah, as one pentagon official put it, to get in their heads to think twice about their next moves. just knowing that israel is not alone in this. jeff, i believe i lost you for just a second there, but we're looking right now at this. the assets in the
1:11 am
middle east. it's just a show of force, really, of the u.s. military. might as well backing up israel a deterrent, is it not? for what may come next in the next couple of seconds? we have left? yeah. i mean, we saw this in april when iran launched its attack against israel. the u.s. got involved and other countries in the region also maybe not as out front saying that they were defending israel, but more or less defending their own airspace. i don't think anybody in the region right now, especially with this ongoing cease fire deal, wants to see this escalate any further, especially when you look at the information on the table that some say we're closer than we've ever been to getting this cease fire deal. so we will have to pay attention to what comes out of cairo today. and certainly what comes out of this israeli security cabinet meeting in terms of their reaction. and if they're going to do anything as far as a further response. thank you so much, jeff paul there. we're going to let you go for now,
