here. i appreciate it. this was a surprising story to make given the fact all we hear about is how expensive it is to go to college. i first thought was aware is all of our money going? there are budget woes. how policeman was happening at that universities with the budget cuts. >> it's all about a math problem. it's a perfect storm for colleges. the xmas of the covid money that was entirely predictable. always going to expire colleges knew this. because of two other factors both having to do with demographics. first, more and more students are choosing to forgo college because it is so expensive but i could talk for hours at how college is so expensive the government try to make it cheap. what really matters here is fewer and fewer students are

opting to matriculate right after high school. to make matters worse for the schools there are fewer students over all thanks to a declining birthrate. they're getting a smaller slice of a smaller pie. bryan: how much of this do you think is a fact students are more and more going to trade schools? culinary schools, construction jobs, that does not seem to be -- that's a trend that does not seem to be slowing down but that seems like a good problem on its face. but is that something that could really put these colleges in a real pickle? >> definitely troubling for colleges who don't adapt to give the students real-world experience that they can used to get a job and excel in that job. there's one group of colleges at the buck the trend it's its vocational and technical schools. more and more people are choosing to go get a degree that might not have that nancy of a diploma as harvard or yale or any other for your college. but it let's them enter the workforce and start making money sooner and in less debt.

this is a market shift i would recommend to anybody running a four-year college, may be wise up to this. make sure they are equipping their students to exceed along after graduation. bryan: one of these colleges going to be doing here? not only closing down majors, also closing down some universities appear they have been colleges that have had to close it. what are we talking about a real-world effects for the students? >> forchestra students whose colleges did not plan a light are being left out the cold. they knew this was coming for they have to plan for these things. if they did not make students aware, that's awful for the students and the families it is the colleges problem. now, what is happening here is these closures are not evenly spread across colleges throughout the country. most of these closures hitting smaller liberal arts schools. a lot of his problem starts out in k-12. and by that i mean people just

are not ready to do college work but at estimate one and five ine graduating high school seniors appeared they're actually prepared for college work there's not enough students to fill up seats in these colleges and a lot of these small schoos just cannot keep the doors open. anita: list of the forbes advisory surge done on college students by the first one says the most common reason for choosing a major 43% the personal passion or interest. the next question was how many students are concerned with their overall health and safety on campus? this one was surprising. 42% were somewhat or very concerned. the last one here what type of classes are you enrolled for in the fall semester in person classes 43%. even after covid online class is still making up 21% rate the growing 35% as hybrid. what stood out of these survey questions and the results? >> have got to say the concern for safety and security on
