89% of people say owning a home is essential. only 10% believe it's easy to achieve. 96% think financial security is important but only 9% say it is attainable. 95% of people believing being able to retire comfortably as a key part of the american dream. just 8% think it can happen. let's bring it associate editor for the wall street journal john bussey. john, glad you're here today these are dismal downright depressing. do you agree the american dream is no longer attainable or harder and harder to attain? as a state new feeling or feeling it's been around for a while? >> it is been around for a while. those numbers have been trending down since 2012. if we look back before the pole started getting taken and look at similar poles that were measuring similar sediment we would find it drifting downward.

housing prices have gone up over the last 15 or 20 years rather substantially. that has put housing a little more out of reach. not totally out of reach but harder to attain. pensions used to be a big factor and the american retirement landscape have kind of disappeared, haven't they? you got to manage yourself if you get it wrong you don't maybe have as much money as you were are expecting when you are retiring. those numbers are particularly down beat among younger people that were surveyed. i do have got to remember that his book ended. there economic life has been a book ended by the financial crisis in 2007 -- 2009. the pandemic and 2021. they have had a particularly rough go of it. not surprising they are a little bit downbeat. >> no kidding but i want to put up a couple of polls let's take a look at this one. this one asks the question does

the american dream if you work hard you will get a head still holds true? look at these numbers. once strewed nottingham or 49% still holds true 34% never held trooper at 17%. and then this one. this is a poll of the sun belt battleground states the most important issue for them we are talking to arizona, nevada, georgia, and north carolina. no surprise there the economy 41% followed by immigration, abortion and so on. it doesn't seem the economy is still front and center on the mind of voters out there. you painted sort of a bleak picture. as voters assess these two candidates and their vision, their presentation of what they would do to fix the economy, how can voters analyze which candidate will be better for them? >> voters apparently are analyzing. remind you of the bleak numbers were about the american dream pole. and those have been trending

down again for way more than a decade. that might be episodic 10 or 20 years from now we might find that trend line has changed for the positive. but as far as the economy is concerned and the voters they are getting more upbeat about the economy. our survey for august showed some more on the order of 10 percentage points more people think the economy is doing well. 34% feel it's headed in the right direction. that is up from 26% in the previous month. we've been talking on this on fox for about a year now. the economy is in pretty good shape. inflation hit everybody. that was caused by the pandemic primarily. you still see that in grocery prices are labor shortages sort of market and production process that have kept prices up.

are there prices have come down. gas price is $3.21 a gallon now average. help mortgage rates have come up almost a full percentage point. much more importantly has notably improved. largely because the economy has been good. inflation aside the economy has been good and growing rather strongly with unemployment very low for over a year now. anita: that may be true for sure played there is an example in a wall street journal article that appeared just a couple of days ago about a couple who purchasee their first home. the wife was a lawyer. the husband was a mayor of a small town. they purchased their first on their mortgage fail is active hundred dollars a month. which they could afford but then everything started going up grocery prices, energy prices, products of everyday goods. and now they are thinking about selling their home they cannot

afford anymore. in fact they said in the article for them the american dream has turned into the american nightmare. if i could promise the country made them is now unattainable. they are crushed under the last four years peacocks episodically that jonah lost his job that's part of the problem in the financial situation. i think they'll when you pull the lens back and look at the macro, the growth of the u.s. economy was revised upward to 3% for the second quarter of this year. that might sound like a small number but it is not. it is a big number on a 28 trillion-dollar economy. that is substantial growth. anything above that might be inflationary.

i think that overall and you are seeing this in the labor numbers as well. the fact it is a pretty good time to be getting a job in the united states. that is why i think consumer sentiment is not just our pulled the conference board found that consumer sentiment is up. gallup found consumer sentiment was up. the consumer is two thirds of the u.s. economy. they are expecting that upbeat momentum to flow into the third quarter of this year. i think that overall the positive picture is beginning to register w as voters. we'll see how that affects the election outcome per. >> we sure wilbur as we saw in that poll, 41% say economy is still the number one issue. john bussey thank you so much for your thoughts today. always good to see you. >> as you just heard of millions of americans are struggling just to get by. in places like california have passed a bill to give taxpayer-funded aid to

it or veto it. and our super majority democrats in sacramento come up with all sorts of harebrained ideas. this should actually be very scary this sets a precedent. they say what happens in california so goes the nation. we would not want to push this on any other state give any other ideas to sate new york, florida or any other place like that. this is a very problematic idea. it's very troubling and scary. question look at the median price of a single-family home it's $439,000 nationwide. it's nearly a million dollars in california. these are record numbers of americans are struggling to try to afford a home. not only can they not afford it but in california there is a 4 million home housing shortage in that state. you have got to wonder perhaps where they are not prioritizing

world was following it. it was a gruesome murder mystery in the small college town. so does the defense have a point here? what do you think? >> absolutely. very often change of venue motion are filed their pro forma they're asking for a change of venue judge, mike client cannot get a fair trial the media's covering this. but in this situation with the defense did well was is they went out and pulled local residents. they had testimony unto their results of the polling where it even showed there's an inherent bias. people cannot be fair. if you are to be acquitted people would storm the courthouse and beat riots. on the other hand it's a very small sample size. the judge has to balance. you heard the judge in ending testimony the judge it has one of the hardest decisions in their career to make whether or not to change venue. >> in fact we have that clip from the judge. why don't we go ahead and play

exactly what she said or he said sorry. >> i would say this is the most known one i know there are a lot of considerations practical in terms of logistics. and prejudicial. so i have some work to do. anita: there are at the logistical and practical considerations but what about what the prosecutor said about there being other ways to identify bias within a jury pool? what about that. there are certain have been many other high-profile cases that have had changes of venues. i think scott peterson there were some serial killer cases that were moved. so what about with the

prosecutor said? >> the prosecutor obviously wants to keep it local. the police are all local the witnesses are all local the victims of families who have to travel six hours it would be a logistical nightmare more likely than not the goal is the defendant gets a fair trial. criminal defendants are not people of the general public once again protection stupid however the constitution of the state of idaho in the united states is otherwise. and no one was to try this case again. how offer the prosecutor made a good point. lawyers are trial lawyers at their worth their weight in gold when they can flush out bias in jury selection where they can fashion questionnaires, the judge can do prescreened to see whether or not there are biases another thing the judge could potentially consider as an alternative to please both parties is let's expand our jury pool. let's go outside this county bring in people from other surrounding counties to the jury pool so there's less of a possible inherent bias and we are getting a greater mixture of the population to ensure there is a fair trial. anita: what do you think?

you think brian kohberger could get a fair trial there? >> brian kohberger's cases case isgotten so much publicity throughout the country. from new york, to california. with the internet and twitter an instagram in people's ability to follow crime story podcasts and television shows and reporting, every single person is going to be questioned and i was in the 90th percentile is going to know about this case and potentially already made a determination as to whether they think something happened and if he did it. again moving it you've got to balance it. i don't think the judge will grant it. i think there will be some kind of expansion of that jury pool and fashioning of questionnaires to start. no one was to try this case get not the prosecutor not the defendant too. >> for short not the judge has a big decision to make the trial is expected to take place next june, june of 2025 people wait
