6:05 am
eventually turn violent , because eventually turn violent, because let's not forget that one of the protagonists in this middle eastern conflict is hamas, a known terrorist organisation that butchers people, that massacres people now from that point of view, is there the danger that the crowd could be infiltrated by openly hamas supporters and turn our streets into basically a bit of a bloodbath and a fight with the police? you've got to ask, what is the motivation for doing this? >> yes , john, the police have >> yes, john, the police have have sort of downplayed the disruption in a few statements. >> they put out since yesterday. but i want to also ask you about these christmas messages that we're going to receive from our political we've got one political leaders. we've got one coming up very soon from rishi sunak. of course, the prime minister starmer, also minister keir starmer, will also , uh, give us one and also show, uh, humza yousuf and david davey as well, richard tice who are going to have on the show will
6:06 am
also deliver one. how important are these christmas messages? >> well, i suppose if we take a look specifically now and you scrape away all the lovely nativity rhetoric that's in them , basically what these are from the three leaders that you've mentioned there. these are basically rallying calls for unity within their parties with an election coming up essentially , in terms of what we essentially, in terms of what we know already about the christmas messages, they have fired the starting gun for the next westminster election. let's be honest about that. sunak starmer and hamza all face internal problems in their parties. this is a way of calming the troops before the big storm of the election. protests yes, i fully appreciate the need to remember our troops and all the service personnel, the emergency workers , all the people who will be working over christmas. that's relative . but to start to use relative. but to start to use your christmas message as a
6:07 am
rallying call for a general election is pushing the boat out a wee bit too far. >> i'm quite looking forward, john, to playing politician bingo as we get these christmas messages in throughout the course of the day, we're definitely going to have something about christian values in one of them. we're definitely going to have something about the military in another you the military in another one. you can that coming , and they'll can see that coming, and they'll probably something about what probably be something about what a diverse multi faith a wonderful, diverse multi faith nafion a wonderful, diverse multi faith nation we are as well . i mean, nation we are as well. i mean, you know, i'm quite excited to see who does what here with these. but you know it is a good oneisnt these. but you know it is a good one isn't it. i think for politicians we're seeing keir starmer on our screen. there uh right now to try to try to show that they are potential future leaders, aren't they ? leaders, aren't they? >> yes. this is really , as >> yes. this is really, as i say, a rallying call not just to the internal workings of their parties, but the end. the voters themselves as, uh, basically, if we were to summarise each of
6:08 am
their speeches , it really is their speeches, it really is what they have left out and what they are . the words, dear santa, they are. the words, dear santa, please ensure that i get these in the next election. that's the line they've left out . line they've left out. >> so it's a bit of a christmas wish list. >> almost absolutely. well, it is 100. and we are just to reiterate as well, we're going to be playing you clips of these as and when they come into us. so make sure you stay tuned here at gb news. but john, i can't help but notice you are you're in northern ireland. okay so what's what's christmas going to be coulter be like at the coulter household? and it like in household? and what's it like in northern household? and what's it like in norwell, it's absolutely lashing >> well, it's absolutely lashing rain here at the minute. i move . rain here at the minute. i move. i've just moved to the north coast , but i've just moved to the north coast, but uh, so i'm going to try and go on the beach . uh, i try and go on the beach. uh, i have relatives here in new zealand and they always like to taunt us, uh, with lovely pictures of them taking their turkey on the beach on christmas day. so uh, i've earmarked out a lovely beach, castlerock beach
6:09 am
here on the north coast. and i don't care if it's rain, hail, snow , the end of the world, snow, the end of the world, whatever it is, i'm going on that beach now. i'm not going wild swimming, but i do have a tradition , uh, since, uh, my tradition, uh, since, uh, my wife and i got married 34 years ago, we always host christmas dinner. and there is the celebration, the commemoration of the eating of the first brussels sprout . and it is my brussels sprout. and it is my excellent, excellent stuff . i excellent, excellent stuff. i eat the first brussels sprout and that signals the start of the christmas dinner. >> i think you should go wild swimming. go on, go for it. thank you very much for your time, doctor john coulter, political commentator in northern ireland. lovely >> i'm a massive fan of the brussels sprout. i think it's an underused veg. >> yes, but what you do is you cover it, cover them in butter, add bacon, add nuts. so it's no longer, you know, the healthy side that it could be, is it. >> no. but it's one day a year where you can just go absolutely feral with the food.
6:10 am
>> i think just one day a year. is it? nope. okay. >> all right. well look, it's christmas long to go christmas eve, so not long to go now. the day. yes now. until the big day. yes >> yesterday, street was >> yesterday, oxford street was packed with last minute shoppers, including us too. but today, other today, supermarkets and other stores preparing those stores are preparing for those last minute buyers. oh great. >> well, look, joining us now for what's been trending among the shoppers is consumer expert imogen tinkler. imogen thank you very much. happy christmas eve to you. i hope you're gearing up now the least. i expect from somebody who is going to come on national television and tell everybody what's been trending is that you have done all your christmas shopping, imogen, have you? >> well, i have, i had a slight last minute panic when father christmas list got changed, which is never helpful. and an ambulance was requested as her chief present. so >> oh, well, funny you should mention father christmas, actually, because we're going to be tracking santa's a little bit later on, aren't we? but yes, i'm excited for that. >> is he? >> where is he? >> where is he? >> well , >> where is he? >> well, we'll find out. we'll find out, okay. on. so
6:11 am
find out, but okay. go on. so what's what have what's been trending? what have been the top buys this been some of the top buys this year for people. what's going to be in people's stockings. year for people. what's going to be some ple's stockings. year for people. what's going to be some ple's stockithings this >> some of the top things this year have been gabby's dolls house has been huge. we've seen some coming the some of it coming back to the 90s with the furbies coming back and with the barbies. yeah, furbies. the furbies. do you remember the furbies. do you remember the furbies the 90s? yeah, you furbies from the 90s? yeah, you used to have to pet them and look them and often they'd look after them and often they'd be with parents or be left with parents or grandparents that they grandparents to check that they were kept okay or woken up in the night. um, and of course, with the barbie this year, with the barbie movie this year, that's been huge with the barbie doll sold in some doll that sold out in some places the car that places with the car that everybody wants . so it's been everybody wants. so it's been really popular. and i know in our like christmas puddings again this year have rocketed and i know in our and locally i know in our sainsbury's they've been sold out since wednesday, which was a i know i didn't expect that they're normally of the they're normally some of the things you can find near things that you can find near the end, aren't they. but um, and there's so much and in stockings there's so much excitement around . trending is excitement around. trending is trending so which you wouldn't expect to have come back in
6:12 am

corner, out of the ring. in just before end the fifth before the end of the fifth round, and he looked somewhere near himself. i don't know if it's the new of coaching. near himself. i don't know if it's he; new of coaching. near himself. i don't know if it's he approached of coaching. near himself. i don't know if it's he approached his oaching. near himself. i don't know if it's he approached his match]. near himself. i don't know if it's he approached his match in he he approached his match in the week he was one word, the week he was given one word, kind answers. kind of monosyllabic answers. i've joshua for i've known anthony joshua for ten and i would say that ten years and i would say that i've never known him like that. he looked uber focussed. he doesn't that he doesn't like the idea that he was. he accused over the was. he was accused over the last years of being mentally last few years of being mentally fragile. quid fragile. now, the quid pro quo here that this all leading here is that this is all leading to fight against deontay to a fight against deontay wilder, tyson fury . wilder, who lost to tyson fury. but what happened deontay but what happened to deontay wilder beaten wilder last night? he got beaten by joseph parker. who? joseph parker somebody lost. he's parker somebody who's lost. he's a heavyweight well a decent heavyweight as well but he's to joyce. he's he's lost to joe joyce. he's lost dillian whyte. he's lost lost to dillian whyte. he's lost to joshua. are his to anthony joshua. those are his three and he got he three defeats and he got he managed deontay managed to overcome deontay wilder that wilder last night. and that means that the big money fight between joshua and wilder that was saudi was due to happen in saudi sometime is less sometime next year, is less likely happen because likely to happen now because it's difficult justify it's difficult to justify putting it on with with deontay wilder having lost. >> was a bit of >> so that was a bit of a surprise, that one without doubt. >> yeah, without doubt. and i think deep down anthony joshua

will disappointed. will have been disappointed. he'd been pleased in the he'd have been pleased in the fact the build up, fact that in the build up, because they're all in the same card night in the build up, card last night in the build up, wilder viewed wilder was saying that he viewed anthony mentally anthony joshua as mentally fragile. turned the fragile. well he turned the tables that's for sure. >> now, you mentioned heavyweights right? heavyweights there, right? so before into the before we get stuck into the premier action, i think premier league action, i think if i was your house if i was round at your house this year, i might return into a heavyweight. the return of factory heavyweight. the return of factyeah. we don't that. >> yeah. we don't want that. >> yeah. we don't want that. >> we want that. >> we don't want that. >> we don't want that. >> and that's because you've got some delights lined up on your own you? some delights lined up on your 0er you? some delights lined up on your 0er have you? some delights lined up on your 0er have my you? some delights lined up on your 0er have my own you? i'm going >> i have my own menu. i'm going to it a secret just for to keep it a secret just for now, because there'll be family members watching they'll members watching and they'll be going, know what's members watching and they'll be going, on know what's members watching and they'll be going, on the know what's members watching and they'll be going, on the menu, what's members watching and they'll be going, on the menu, butt's members watching and they'll be going, on the menu, but we'll what's on the menu, but we'll have them all tomorrow. but let's little bit a let's give you a little bit of a flavour. know, the flavour. you know, if that's the right word. think it is. but right word. i think it is. but throughout the i've been throughout the year i've been making working various making working on various different my different soups. uh, soup is my is my speciality. every one wednesday tend wednesday and every month i tend to my brother's. to go round to my brother's. i turn up on the doorstep around about past seven, hoping turn up on the doorstep around abcthe past seven, hoping turn up on the doorstep around abcthe pasareeven, hoping turn up on the doorstep around abcthe pasareeverand ping all the family are in, and i cook all. so that's me cook for them all. so that's me doing celeriac quite doing parents celeriac quite recently. chef's hat. recently. that's my chef's hat. there >> pear and celeriac. yeah.

>> so, you know, we were doing a bit ofyesterday.mas shopping >> so, you know, we were doing a bit ofyesterday.mdon't)pping >> so, you know, we were doing a bit ofyesterday.mdon't kn0w| there yesterday. i don't know how you've been getting on with yours, that. we how you've been getting on with you there that. we how you've been getting on with you there early. that. we how you've been getting on with you there early. it's that. we how you've been getting on with you there early. it's the1at. we how you've been getting on with you there early. it's the only we got there early. it's the only time thing time in my life a good thing i've a shop before. i've ever been at a shop before. it's opened outside, i it's opened outside, but i suppose question marks is whether or not you know, two days before christmas, whether whether or not you know, two deshould»re christmas, whether whether or not you know, two deshould»re ch beenas, whether whether or not you know, two deshould»re ch been allowed.er it should have been allowed. >> know what? i it's >> gosh, i you know what? i it's very much been a year of protest. so these protesters are always hit retailers always going to hit retailers where it hurts. but i feel sorry for zara because have been for zara because they have been mistakes only targeted here. patrick because this advert they're talking about , it patrick because this advert they're talking about, it came before the war. even started with hamas and israel . so they with hamas and israel. so they are boycotting zara for no reasons when they haven't done anything wrong. and again, it's like, what are you trying to achieve here? you're achieve here? because you're putting out the wrong message here. you're not here. you know, you're not actually supporting actually affecting or supporting your cause in the right way. i think personally. >> so you think it's a bit like the advert was the m&s advert that was criticised the hats that criticised for the hats that happened look the happened to look like the palestinian flag. >> people just something to >> people just want something to get they want to get annoyed about. they want to be over no reason . be sensitive over no reason.
6:42 am
>> you know, stephanie, i'll stick with you on this one now. so is the front of the so this is on the front of the observer. gathering observer. it's gathering a lot of , and i know that the of traction, and i know that the daily express doing daily express have been doing a heck this as well. daily express have been doing a hec about this as well. daily express have been doing a hec about assistedthis as well. daily express have been doing a hec about assisted dying. well. daily express have been doing a hec about assisted dying. now. it's about assisted dying. now. former health chief joins calls for in the wake of for new law. it's in the wake of esther rantzen's plea, i suppose. what's going on here? well know, two well you know, we've had two former secretary stephen former health secretary stephen dornan and alan milburn who have come out now and they're pushing for government a new for government to make a new vote about assisted dying. for government to make a new votiwhetherissisted dying. for government to make a new votiwhether it'sted dying. for government to make a new votiwhether it's something that's >> whether it's something that's going to be up for debate, i can see now for next year, even more importantly, it's something that's have feature that's going to have to feature in people's election manifestos, andifs in people's election manifestos, and it's of those topics and it's one of those topics now, especially as you've got someone profile esther someone high profile as esther rantzen talking about considering assisted dying. i think she's kind of struck a match where people actually match now where people actually are going to start thinking whether this should be a legal opfion whether this should be a legal option in this country. whether this should be a legal option in this country . and option in this country. and i think it's one of those things where it's a hard topic to talk about. clearly it's not something that's going to be brushed underneath the carpet. and, spoke .
6:43 am
and, you know, you spoke. >> patrick spoke to esther rantzen's daughter , didn't you? daughter? >> i did , um, she was very >> i did, um, she was very conflicted about it. initially that's fair to say. for the obvious reason. there's also the risk that if you don't essentially wrestle a relative off a plane to zurich , that you off a plane to zurich, that you can then potentially get a knock on the door from the police, which seems a bit ridiculous. yeah, very about yeah, i'm very conflicted about it think know in the it, but i think we know in the year this is going year to come this is going to be a that's dominating a lot a story that's dominating a lot of political agenda . james of the political agenda. james talking to somebody that's been dominating the political agenda recently as well. this the recently as well. this is the sunday nhs chairman. sunday times nhs chairman. doctor strikes me fear for patients. >> yes. so this is an interview done by the head of nhs england, richard medding. uh, and the sort of in which they set it sort of way in which they set it up is by saying that his wife broke earlier this broke her ankle earlier this yean broke her ankle earlier this year, to wait broke her ankle earlier this yearof to wait broke her ankle earlier this yearof 12 to wait broke her ankle earlier this yearof 12 hours to wait broke her ankle earlier this yearof 12 hours in to wait broke her ankle earlier this yearof 12 hours in nhs to wait sort of 12 hours in nhs overnight night to an overnight night to give an example of how it's affecting everyone. are 6.4 everyone. look, there are 6.4 million people this country million people in this country waiting we waiting for 7.7 appointments. we know a huge kind know there's a huge kind of waiting etc. and the sort waiting list, etc. and the sort of nub to all of this is the
6:44 am
strikes which are going to go on next we're going to see next week. we're going to see junior strike. as junior doctors go on strike. as richard in the richard renee makes clear in the interview, richard renee makes clear in the interviei strike throughout days of strike action throughout this by junior this year, 30 of them by junior doctors . and going doctors. and it's going to problem going problem is, they're going to exacerbate the issues around sort provision. sort of service provision. and of long of course, people with long terme which normally terme conditions which normally would will would get them diagnosed will do what during covid. and what they did during covid. and so rather going so rather than going to a hospital week of hospital next week because of all want all the strike action, they want to put to wait. they will then put those meaning further those off, meaning that further down to down the line, we're going to see issues with see more and more issues with the outcomes. see more and more issues with the yeah, outcomes. see more and more issues with the yeah, stephanie, outcomes. see more and more issues with the yeah, stephanie, outc don't >> yeah, stephanie, you don't you don't. lot of us won't you don't. a lot of us won't realise if we don't use realise if we don't have to use the nhs specific moment, the nhs at this specific moment, just bad it has got with the just how bad it has got with the strike action. but if you do need nhs you are going to be need the nhs you are going to be very worried. well i think a lot of people, emily, are taking their health into their own hands. >> t- >> yeah, we've now got this generation google doctors generation of google doctors where myself , if i have where even for myself, if i have a problem, i think to myself, i'm to go to nhs i'm not going to go to the nhs because i know a i can't get an appointment b they're either appointment or b they're either on so you getting on strike. so you are getting a lot things people are lot of things where people are just help themselves just trying to help themselves or diagnose themselves, which again, i think is going to lead
6:45 am
to health crisis down to a bigger health crisis down the and many the road. and how many more strikes do need? like strikes do we need? it's like they need to come to the they really need to come to the table how do we table and think, how do we resolve this now? i i have resolve this now? i mean, i have massive sympathy workers. >> they do literally save lives. okay. you know, by and okay. and you know, by and large, they are heroes . i think large, they are heroes. i think the the strikes is the timing of the strikes is poon the timing of the strikes is poor. and i think that is inevitably the most vulnerable people in society who end up suffering as a result. and that is shame , borderline is a real shame, borderline unforgivable . but if we're unforgivable. but if we're losing people to australia, etc, we've got to respond to market. you know what? >> i think there are probably quite a lot of junior doctors who don't agree with the strike action, but a huge amount of pressure from the bma and from some of the more militant activists within the nhs . i do activists within the nhs. i do think not all of those doctors will have been, know, will have been, you know, accepting . accepting of this. >> looking forward to >> i'm looking forward to talking to you about this particular one, which is the eco activist king and his green christmas day message. so king
6:46 am
charles is going to use king, his christmas broadcast tomorrow to deliver a powerful message about the environment. stephanie, your names next. this one, we'll kick it off with you stephanie, your names next. this one,we'll kick it off with you stephanie, your names next. this one,we'll kick ijames. th you stephanie, your names next. this one,we'll kick ijames. tithink and we'll go to james. i think always christmas speech always with the christmas speech , that the , it always hits me that the queen's because the queen queen's gone because the queen always nailed the christmas speech. >> she always it was well rounded. and then now we're into our second christmas speech with the king and obviously he's a green fingered king. he's about his sustainability. so sausage fingered. >> no . sorry, i shouldn't say >> no. sorry, i shouldn't say that. >> and that is what he's. and thatis >> and that is what he's. and that is going to be his, you know, main agenda in this speech tomorrow. that's we're tomorrow. that's what we're hearing. going be hearing. he's going to be talking sustainability talking about sustainability being pro the environment. and to be honest, he's got all the touches of eco friendliness in this speech . he's going to this speech. he's going to deliver of deliver it in front of buckingham palace front buckingham palace and in front of christmas tree. of a living christmas tree. so he gone for a plastic he hasn't gone for a plastic one. also he's gone for one. and also he's gone for biodegradable baubles as well. oh, there you go . oh, there you go. >> biodegradable baubles. have you got those? >> well, in our family we've actually cut the same baubles we
6:47 am
had like the 1950s and 60s. had in like the 1950s and 60s. >> oh, that's true . sustainable. >> oh, that's true. sustainable. >> oh, that's true. sustainable. >> that's that maybe says >> i mean that's that maybe says more about us and our of more about us and our sort of archaic taste. >> do you mind? you mind >> do you mind? um, do you mind a environment ? eco a bit of environment? eco activism speech from the activism in a speech from the king? because that doesn't necessarily have to be political unless he starts commenting on a, know, ulez policy or a, you know, ulez policy or something . something. >> we live in hope. um, but i think yeah, i think you're right, emily. it's a balancing act, know, i don't act, isn't it? you know, i don't see someone, you see an issue with someone, you know, buying christmas know, buying a christmas tree, which replant which they can then replant in the know, talking the soil or, you know, talking about etc. it's about conservation, etc. it's when goes party when it goes into party politics, so i think politics, etc. so i think perhaps after the experience of the elgin marbles tie, the king will refrained that. the elgin marbles tie, the king wilinow refrained that. the elgin marbles tie, the king wilinow thiszfrained that. the elgin marbles tie, the king wilinow this isained that. the elgin marbles tie, the king wilinow this is good. that. the elgin marbles tie, the king wilinow this is good. it's that. the elgin marbles tie, the king wilinow this is good. it's ithat. the elgin marbles tie, the king wilinow this is good. it's i find >> now this is good. it's i find it difficult often . i know you it difficult often. i know you do well because a lot of the do as well because a lot of the news be very negative. you news can be very negative. you know, that can be news know, and also that can be news that generates controversy. so it goes without that this it goes without saying that this is of thing that people it goes without saying that this is up of thing that people it goes without saying that this is up talking hing that people it goes without saying that this is up talking about1at people it goes without saying that this is up talking about at people it goes without saying that this is up talking about at pe> like it. don't >> she doesn't like it. don't like it. >> no. just a nice easy day at the but one of the the office. but one of the reasons why gb news really
6:48 am
reasons why gb news was really set to try to set up, i think, was to try to bang drum for britain bang a positive drum for britain in that don't in a way that you don't necessarily elsewhere . and necessarily get elsewhere. and this words james this is actually words james echoed hunt, who's echoed by jeremy hunt, who's blasting scrooges blasting the economic scrooges trying to talk britain down. we are at a golden dawn. are we? >> well, uh, i mean , i wouldn't, >> well, uh, i mean, i wouldn't, i mean, perhaps go that far. i'm not that drunk on the christmas cherry but obviously you cherry yet, but obviously you would expect chancellor to would expect the chancellor to talk about positive success talk about the positive success of being of the government. that being said, you think, for said, you know, i think, for instance, look at, say, said, you know, i think, for instlast, look at, say, said, you know, i think, for instlast, years, look at, say, said, you know, i think, for instlast, years, sincek at, say, said, you know, i think, for instlast, years, since 2010,;ay, the last 13 years, since 2010, britain has had uk gdp britain has had more uk gdp growth, according to the imf , growth, according to the imf, than, say, germany or the eurozone , etc. i do think eurozone, etc. i do think sometimes, you know , as orwell sometimes, you know, as orwell wrote can have a wrote about, we can have a country our intellectual country of our intellectual elites talk down elites to sort of talk us down a bit. and i suppose hunt's argument piece argument in this piece he's written is that, written for the express is that, uh, basically earnings are now outstripping inflation for the first so i think the most first time. so i think the most recent data said was recent data said inflation was now earnings are at now about 3.9. earnings are at 7.3. so they're going up. and the hope is that people will start to that effect coming start to feel that effect coming through year. and through in the new year. and maybe out worst
6:49 am
maybe we'll be out the worst year covid year of the post. covid inflationary year of the post. covid inlee's ary of year of the post. covid inlee'sary of a scrooge, >> he's a bit of a scrooge, though, isn't he? >> is. he's been >> i think he is. he's been scrooge all long, i scrooge all year long, and i think people actually feel think until people actually feel the effects of this so—called prosperity, we're all feeling pretty negative at the moment. we've lived through covid, we're living through a cost of living crisis. we're living through inflation. even though the numbers are this week. but numbers are good this week. but again, it's like, why should people , you know, positive people feel, you know, positive before , we're feeling before actually, we're feeling this so—called prosperity . you this so—called prosperity. you know, when feel positive about what. >> right. >> right. >> christmas dinner. >> christmas dinner. >> yeah. >> em- em“ >> christmas dinner. i'm feeling credibly positive about christmas i've always christmas dinner. i've always been massive fan of um we been a massive fan of it. um we do want your pictures very shortly. we're going to be getting pictures getting first round of pictures from news from our wonderful gb news viewers gbviews@gbnews.com. what are you doing with your family? okay you travelling back okay and are you travelling back for stephanie, for christmas? but stephanie, we've to squeeze we've just got time to squeeze in and there's in something here and there's a reason mention christmas reason why i mention christmas dinner. reason why i mention christmas din yes. eat your five a >> yes. do you eat your five a day, veggies? >> yes. do you eat your five a dayyou veggies? >> yes. do you eat your five a dayyou vmeies? >> yes. do you eat your five a dayyou vme ?s? >> yes. do you eat your five a dayyou vme ? absolutely. >> you know me? absolutely. >> you know me? absolutely. >> cheeses, five. >> yeah. five cheeses, five. well, you know , tomorrow when well, you know, tomorrow when everyone's tucking into their

christmas dinner, a big part of the plate will be dedicated to vegetables . vegetables. >> and i love this piece in the mail it was actually mail because it was actually asking all these of asking where all these kind of vegetables come from. like brussels , of course. no brussels, of course. no surprise. it comes from surprise. there it comes from brussels, originated brussels, but it originated about 7000 years ago, and it didn't actually make its entry onto the british christmas plate until the early 20th century. my goodness me. and it's like carrots. people think it's a nod to the house of orange in holland, but it's actually originated from southern europe . originated from southern europe. so when we're eating our veggies tomorrow , we are having a multi tomorrow, we are having a multi national veggie plate , not an national veggie plate, not an international plate of food. >> there we go. oh, it's the roast potatoes for me. >> for me. >> for me. >> i enjoyed >> well i enjoyed learning about the that the carrots and the fact that actually world two people actually world war two people thought that the you know, to disguise secret radar , we disguise our secret of radar, we were able pretend that were able to pretend that carrots eyesight . carrots improved your eyesight. >> good stuff. well, there we go. from you go. well hear more from you later you very much. later on. thank you very much. >> to a wonderful stephanie later on. thank you very much. >> and a wonderful stephanie later on. thank you very much. >> and jamesjerful stephanie later on. thank you very much. >> and james hill.l stephanie later on. thank you very much. >> ofand james hill.l stephanie later on. thank you very much. >> of course.es hill.l stephanie later on. thank you very much. >> indeed.;e.es hill.l stephanie >> indeed. well christmas. christmas particularly christmas can be a particularly lonely people, and lonely time for some people, and

it's done it. and the m&s have you seen the christmas snow globe that they have that lights up ? they've sold out of it in so up? they've sold out of it in so many they're selling up? they've sold out of it in so many empty they're selling up? they've sold out of it in so many empty ones they're selling up? they've sold out of it in so many empty ones now*re selling up? they've sold out of it in so many empty ones now on selling up? they've sold out of it in so many empty ones now on ebay,| them empty ones now on ebay, which is shocking. >> now some of the some of the men in our lives often, uh, well, either leave it to the last minute or they get it completely wrong or there is absolutely no surprise because . absolutely no surprise because. they just ask, you know, their wife, girlfriend and daughter what they want. so they to take away element surprise. away that element of surprise. but just so they don't buy something apologised about but just so they don't buy sonthat ng apologised about but just so they don't buy sonthat .g apologised about but just so they don't buy sonthat . i've apologised about but just so they don't buy sonthat . i've apologised.about all that. i've apologised. >> some the >> what what are some of the worst presents women that worst presents for women that sometimes best presents? sometimes or the best presents? should best presents? >> but for women still really like to have perfume. >> it's something that you don't always buy for yourself. it's one the most popular things, one of the most popular things, but sure you get the but it's making sure you get the right not just a one right brand and not just a one that they don't work. then you're stuck with it for the yeah you're stuck with it for the year. clothes have been really popular and people popular this year, and people have buying vouchers, but have been buying vouchers, but people to their own people like to buy their own clothes, that's bit
7:14 am
clothes, so that's a bit difficult as well. so it is asking but asking those questions, but sustainability has been up there. so something really meaningful, that people want meaningful, um, that people want for homes . for their homes. >> yeah. no. absolutely and yes, i mean, i think this was the first year ever that we decided that we, we, we knew what each other wanted. and they were quite important purchases. so we actually picked them actually went and picked them together, which kind together, didn't we. which kind of the kind of surprise of sucks. the kind of surprise out it. out of it. >> i've got surprise for you >> i've got a surprise for you though. tomorrow on this show you from you will be opening a gift from me, so i hope you've got one too. >> okay , well, imogen, i really >> okay, well, imogen, i really do need your top tips. >> then, for potential last >> now then, for potential last minute, last minute buys. you know what's what? what should panicked men be getting their messages , do you think? messages, do you think? >> what should panicked men be going i would say looking going out? i would say looking at what's there. at perfume, seeing what's there. um, some jewellery and something for themselves. people really like beauty still and i'd think, like beauty still and i'd think, like spa to take time or get them something that you can go and do together. i think one of the things we haven't been able
7:15 am
to the last to go out as much in the last few really few years, and people really want spend time together, um, want to spend time together, um, so to go and do so being able to go and do something fun, like a concert ticket and don't have ticket and you don't even have to your house all right, ticket and you don't even have to then your house all right, ticket and you don't even have to then it's' house all right, ticket and you don't even have to then it's then;e all right, ticket and you don't even have to then it's then it'sll right, but then it's then it's a present you isn't it? but then it's then it's a pre it nt you isn't it? but then it's then it's a pre it is. you isn't it? but then it's then it's a pre it is. which isn't it? but then it's then it's a pre it is. which is isn't it? but then it's then it's a pre it is. which is myn't it? but then it's then it's a pre it is. which is my kind? but then it's then it's a pre it is. which is my kind of >> it is. which is my kind of gift. >> okay, imogen , thank you very >> okay, imogen, thank you very much. hope you have much. i hope you have a wonderful christmas with you and yours. great you. yours. and great to see you. that's tinkler who that's imogen tinkler there, who is yes. now, the great christmas >> yes. now, the great christmas getaway is truly well underway . getaway is truly well underway. the aa says it's been the busiest day of the pre—christmas period, travellers have been period, as travellers have been facing road and rail. facing delays by road and rail. train passengers are dealing with cancellations. >> oh gosh , good luck to >> oh gosh, good luck to everybody who's trying to get back today. there's also been trained plays london's king cross, stations. cross, paddington stations. they're closed for engineering works at this time of year. look joining us talk all things joining us to talk all things disruption is the travel expert sally gaffin. good morning to you sally . sally gaffin. good morning to you sally. i'm pleased to see that you've managed to transport yourself to your laptop so that yourself to your laptop so that you can talk us down the line you can talk to us down the line today. a little bit of christmas

glamour you glamour going on behind you there. what's glamour going on behind you there. on what's glamour going on behind you there. on with what's glamour going on behind you there. on with the what's glamour going on behind you there. on with the with alhat's glamour going on behind you there. on with the with the t's going on with the with the travel yeah travel chaos today then. yeah >> so well this is always the peak time like you said. but what makes it a much more of a ganh what makes it a much more of a grinch type of travel experience is when stations opt to close over christmas . so paddington over christmas. so paddington and king's cross are not operating any mainline services today. so that means that if you didn't travel yesterday , you are didn't travel yesterday, you are stuck. and with paddington , no stuck. and with paddington, no service at all to the south wales west wales through to after boxing day, the 28th of december at and also , even if december at and also, even if you're trying to get away by air, the problem is getting to the airport. so for example, heathrow, there . aren't any heathrow, there. aren't any mainline trains going there. there's no heathrow express , so there's no heathrow express, so it's all those pesky little pieces of your journey that you've normally take for granted that are disrupted this christmas . christmas. >> it's a bit of a messy picture
7:17 am
now. sadly, most people still do drive . five how are the roads drive. five how are the roads looking? have most people already got to their destinations for christmas ? or destinations for christmas? or will today be a super busy day to . to. >> well, the aa and the rac were warning of mega congestion and rush with travel and road travel around 16 million passengers per day. now the peak time is yes , day. now the peak time is yes, today mainly. but today, of course , there's many people make course, there's many people make that last dash effort and what's going to disrupt some of those roads is high winds up to 70 miles an hour in places expected across the uk today. so be careful. be aware that some bndges careful. be aware that some bridges may shut or there will be delays. and in fact , um, be delays. and in fact, um, driving associations are warning against car drivers driving too close to high sided vehicles on the roads. and don't forget , the roads. and don't forget, you've got to think about those stopping distances when you're driving as well. so the m25 is

gb news. you're welcome back. you're watching and listening to christmas eve breakfast with patrick and me, emily patrick christys and me, emily carver . carver. >> right. well, christmas filled with traditions that vary from home to home. but one thing most people, most people can agree on is that turkey is a must have. >> yes, at least that used to be the case. but with the rise of veganism in recent years, more brits are choosing the brits than ever are choosing the likes of tofu over turkey. >> but can you really call it a traditional christmas dinner ? if traditional christmas dinner? if you're skipping on the bird? >> yes. so we have vegan author
7:29 am
ed winters , who certainly thinks ed winters, who certainly thinks so , and he's here in the studio so, and he's here in the studio with us now. ed uh, turkey. it's been a tradition on now. i've been a tradition on now. i've been looking this up. it's been a tradition since henry the eighth decided to swap out his traditional goose for the turkey. we don't want to change that. now we? that. now do we? >> i mean, tradition and >> well, i mean, tradition and cultures are always need to be updated because society evolves , updated because society evolves, morality evolves. >> what we perceive to be ethical mean, thank ethical evolves. i mean, thank goodness we don't live with the same and ethical code as goodness we don't live with the same the and ethical code as goodness we don't live with the same the eighth.ethical code as goodness we don't live with the same the eighth. andil code as goodness we don't live with the same the eighth. and people as henry the eighth. and people back and back then. so morality and ethics always update. and ethics should always update. and christmas a celebration of christmas is a celebration of peace earth. it's about love. peace on earth. it's about love. it's about compassion . so how it's about compassion. so how can the mass slaughter of tens of, well, 10 million turkeys and millions animals be a part millions more animals be a part of a celebration of love and peace? like peace? it seems like the antithesis of a thing. antithesis of such a thing. >> well, we can bring in >> okay, well, we can bring in now. i turkey paul now. i think turkey farmer paul kelly, i don't think could kelly, who i don't think could disagree more with that. i mean, is it christmas dinner without a turkey? paul >> well, not for me, certainly
7:30 am
not. no but and certainly if you don't eat meat, turkey is not for you. that is 110. but you know , we've been doing it for know, we've been doing it for it's a great tradition. i think it's a great tradition. i think it's a great tradition. i think it's a centrepiece of the family table and of table at christmas. and of course it's great, great value. and if you get a turkey and if you get a great turkey and well, it's beautiful. >> paul, what's wrong with a bit of, tofu for christmas ? >> absolutely nothing . you know . >> absolutely nothing. you know. absolutely. i think, and of course, if you don't eat meat, you know, all meats aren't for you. uh, for me, you know, you know, all meats aren't for yegoose uh, for me, you know, you know, all meats aren't for yegoose riverfor me, you know, you know, all meats aren't for yegoose river beef e, you know, you know, all meats aren't for yegoose river beef turkey. enow, you know, all meats aren't for yegoose river beef turkey. your, a goose river beef turkey. you know, , uh, i'm a big meat know, it's, uh, i'm a big meat eater . and so know, it's, uh, i'm a big meat eater. and so i just do love. yeah okay. i love all. >> what would. >> what would. >> what would your message be? because what he's saying there is he obviously he's got no problem with anyone who's, you know, on the nut roast or know, on the old nut roast or something um, something like that. um, i suppose just want suppose you really just want everyone stop turkey, everyone to stop eating turkey, don't everyone to stop eating turkey, dont so everyone to stop eating turkey, don't so you're kind of don't you? so you're kind of more in the in kind of real more in the in the kind of real cancel category, i think. cancel meat category, i think. >> think is bit cancel meat category, i think. >>a think is bit cancel meat category, i think. >>a loaded hink is bit cancel meat category, i think. >>a loaded word. is bit cancel meat category, i think. >>a loaded word. what is bit cancel meat category, i think. >>a loaded word. what iswantt of a loaded word. what i want people to do is make more ethical and undeniably people to do is make more ethikilling and undeniably people to do is make more ethikilling andethical ably people to do is make more
7:31 am
ethikilling andethical than not killing is more ethical than killing. is killing. and again, christmas is about . what could less about peace. what could be less peaceful mass slaughter? i peaceful than mass slaughter? i mean, slaughterhouses don't sound compassionate. and remember the main way that turkeys killed this turkeys are killed in this country chambers. country is in gas chambers. does that very peaceful to you? that sound very peaceful to you? >> go on. paul you know this is a big debate, isn't it? >> but, you know, my take on it is, you know, if we weren't meant to eat meat, we wouldn't eat meat. and that don't eat meat. and those that don't want don't meat. eat meat. and those that don't wantuh, don't meat. eat meat. and those that don't wantuh, it's. don't meat. eat meat. and those that don't wantuh, it's. whatdon't meat. eat meat. and those that don't wantuh, it's. what about meat. eat meat. and those that don't wantuh, it's. what about . meat. it's, uh, it's. what about. >> well, i mean, what about dogs 7 >> well, i mean, what about dogs ? i mean, why don't we eat dogs? i mean, we could eat dogs. people they people do eat dogs. they do. should they're should we eat dogs? they're doing doing china. doing fine. they're doing china. >> they're vietnam all >> they're doing vietnam all over eat over the world. they eat dogs. there's don't you over the world. they eat dogs. the dogs? don't you over the world. they eat dogs. the dogs? because don't you over the world. they eat dogs. the dogs? because it's»n't you over the world. they eat dogs. the dogs? because it's notyou over the world. they eat dogs. the dogs? because it's not for me. >> but why not? if we're meant to, why don't you not meant to eat dogs ? why we eat turkeys and eat dogs? why we eat turkeys and cows and sheep and lambs. >> then of course, that's tradition, isn't it? that's what we've done , you know. and we've done, you know. and protein, meat is a great source of protein. >> is dog meat. is >> well, so is dog meat. is something ethical just because it's ? it's traditional? >> because eat dogs
7:32 am
>> because we don't eat dogs here in the uk? that doesn't not to say it's not ethical, but you're a great believer we you're i'm a great believer we rear our turkeys. and if you treat, you rear them the best way possibly treat way you possibly can, you treat them respect and them with the utmost respect and you them very quickly you slaughter them very quickly and very humanely. so we are gas chambers are compassionate and respectful . if you have a look respectful. if you have a look at them. yes they are. that's a very, very, very, very good way of slaughtering them. yeah. that's chambers that's why gas chambers are compassionate chambers are compassionate. >> would you like to say that out loud, please? >> there's >> there's nothing there's nothing nice about killing any animal, is there? i'm not going to say it's not going. get off on killing turkeys . nothing nice to say it's not going. get off on kil|itg turkeys. nothing nice to say it's not going. get off on kil|itg tall. eys . nothing nice to say it's not going. get off on kil|itg tall. but nothing nice to say it's not going. get off on kil|itg tall. but given 1g nice to say it's not going. get off on kil|itg tall. but given thatce about it at all. but given that we are very farming is very clever hunting, you know , back clever hunting, you know, back in the old days. and if you look at i think there's at nature, i think there's nothing. there's nothing. crueller than nature, the way nature kills animals, the way uons nature kills animals, the way lions hunt down things. as lions hunt down things. we as humans very compassionate. humans are very compassionate. and slaughter those and we do slaughter those animals in a very compassionate way. quickly and humanely. i suppose. >> okay, i suppose one of the big questions as well, around if we stopped some animals ,
7:33 am
we stopped eating some animals, then we would not actually have them created in the first place. so there's that kind of decision about, well, is any life better than no life at all? >> ed well, i just want to first establish that there was a contradiction in what the farmer said. firstly, he said he acknowledged killing acknowledged that killing animals to do animals isn't a nice thing to do . but then he doing so is . but then he said doing so is compassionate. that's an inherent contradiction. the compassionate thing would be not to so. establish that to do so. once we establish that doing nice thing to doing so is not a nice thing to do. your point, do. and to answer your point, just bring life into just because we bring life into existence give the existence doesn't give us the right a right to harm that life. a parent has children doesn't parent who has children doesn't have the right harm those have the right to harm those children just children and beat them just because have because they wouldn't have been alive. parents alive. about those parents deciding to do so. so what we have an ethical have is an ethical responsibility over the life that exists , and that means not that exists, and that means not breeding existence breeding life into existence with sole purpose exploit with the sole purpose to exploit and . and slaughter them. >> there's difference between, >> there's a difference between, um, paul, talk about um, i mean, paul, you talk about how you wouldn't eat dogs. is this about, i guess you wouldn't have pet turkey, would you? so have a pet turkey, would you? so a dog's a bit different in that way. a dog's a bit different in that waymaybe does. >> maybe does. >> maybe does. >> we've had i have had pet turkeys the past.
7:34 am
turkeys in the past. >> a. dog yes i had i didn't really have, you know, dogs. >> uh, it's just it's not in our culture, is it? you know, we're not dog eaters, but in not we're not dog eaters, but in vietnam and china, is just vietnam and china, dog is just like chicken, you know? okay paul like chicken, you know? okay paul, i'll try this. >> i'll try this one instead. are you a bit worried about the way changing with way things are changing with people's dietary choices? veganism vegetarianism on the rise ? yes. rise? yes. >> no. and i absolutely respect everyone's choices . and, uh, is everyone's choices. and, uh, is it on the rise worldwide? you know, i don't think it is . it know, i don't think it is. it seems to be certainly vegan vegetable protein and, um, alternate proteins. they're not doing as well as everyone expected. there's huge investment coming out of that because people are trying it and i'm really enjoying you i'm really enjoying it. you know, doing it, using know, they're doing it, using it as and it's not, as a substitute and it's not, um, it's not as tasty. as a substitute and it's not, um, it's not as tasty . and when um, it's not as tasty. and when i said i don't, you know, killing isn't a nice killing animals isn't a nice thing do. that's the way killing animals isn't a nice thing conditioneds the way killing animals isn't a nice thing conditioned as1e way killing animals isn't a nice thing conditioned as humans, killing animals isn't a nice thingit onditioned as humans, killing animals isn't a nice thingit ?1ditioned as humans, killing animals isn't a nice thingit ? you )ned as humans, killing animals isn't a nice thingit ? you know,s humans, killing animals isn't a nice thingit ? you know, it'simans, isn't it? you know, it's nothing. if i do absolutely nothing. and if i do absolutely think that we are way, way more
7:35 am
compassionate than nature, the way nature kills and deals with animals, you know, it makes me shudder looking at it sometimes. >> but we don't to kill. so >> but we don't have to kill. so even if you could make that argument, another option argument, there's another option on table which is not on the table which is not to partake in that violence ourselves that's why ourselves either. and that's why that's ethical option, that's the most ethical option, because have take because we don't have to take part does. and we part in what nature does. and we also have to have also don't have to have slaughterhouses also don't have to have slalgassed)uses also don't have to have slalgassed to .es also don't have to have slalgassed to death and have also don't have to have slalgthroats) death and have also don't have to have slalgthroats cut.1th and have their throats cut. >> mentioned >> all right. so you mentioned what table paul, what was on the table that paul, i going to be on on i know what's going to be on on your christmas. your table this christmas. you've very, very you've made that very, very clear. editor, can i just clear. and editor, can i just very quickly ask you what will be will be on your be what will be on your christmas dinner year? christmas dinner this year? >> mean, thing >> and i mean, the great thing is, majority of is, you know, the majority of christmas already christmas dinner is already plant from the red plant based from the red cabbage. brussels sprouts, roast potatoes, . so i'll have potatoes, parsnip. so i'll have all of that. and then i'm going to personally have delicious to personally have a delicious mushroom with nice mushroom wellington with a nice gravy. could nut gravy. but you could have a nut roast, you know, a plant based turkey whatever turkey alternative or whatever it there are lots of it may be. so there are lots of different available. it may be. so there are lots of diffwell, available. it may be. so there are lots of diffwell, you, able. you >> well, both of you, thank you very much and i hope have very much and i hope you have a wonderful and make wonderful christmas. and make sure you take care. uh, sure that you take care. as, uh, vegan author winters there sure that you take care. as, uh,

christmas. well the royal christmas. well the royal christmas begins on christmas eve and it's a very important penod eve and it's a very important period for them . period for them. >> i it's thought that, uh , king >> i it's thought that, uh, king charles and queen camilla will be hosting some 40, and that will include , uh, the queen, will include, uh, the queen, camilla's, uh, children often two of them have grandchildren as well. there are five of those. so in for roughly 40 in all. and their various important traditions on christmas eve, there is the decoration, the finishing touches to the norfolk spruce tree. there's a black tie dinner and most important of all, of course, at tea time they open their presents. it's a germanic tradition and they , germanic tradition and they, although they changed their name from saxe—coburg—gotha to windsor, they've kept this up and the key, of course, what do you give those who have everything you have, jokey presents. and that's what, uh,
7:38 am
the royals give each other. and there have been some amusing examples the years . examples over the years. >> and, richard, we've heard that the king well, he's standing front of a real standing in front of a real christmas tree. yes um, but also he'll be talking about in his message to us all about, uh , the message to us all about, uh, the environment and how we should be more sustainable. he's got sustainable baubles. >> he has sustainable baubles . >> he has sustainable baubles. >> he has sustainable baubles. >> well, apparently so, yes , >> well, apparently so, yes, they're pinecones and very nice paper ornaments and so forth. so apparently the tree is going to include, uh , sustainable include, uh, sustainable decorations. the other point of the tree is that it is a living tree . so although it will be in tree. so although it will be in a tub , it will therefore be a tub, it will therefore be after woods be planted in the ground . and we know that king ground. and we know that king charles is someone who's campaigned on his first speech in the environment was made in 1970, and this year he opened cop. uh 28, in dubai. something cruelly overshadowed, i would add, by scobie's dreadful book.
7:39 am
>> and what do you mention that, richard? it's important that you mentioned that because it's been a difficult year, by the way. it promises to potentially be a difficult 2020 for, uh, you know, i don't think we necessarily need to delve into this too now christmas this too much now it's christmas eve, know , prince eve, but, you know, prince andrew for want andrew is supposedly for want of a sweating a better phrase, sweating over the epstein list being the old epstein list being released. in terms of, uh , released. but in terms of, uh, archie and lilibet apparently king charles, you know , is not king charles, you know, is not it's not really getting to spend any time with them, really is that another little fault of harry and meghan here? do we think ? think? >> of course, he would like to, but i do think that , i mean, we but i do think that, i mean, we know or understand that the sussexes won't be at christmas at sandringham , and i think it at sandringham, and i think it would have been inappropriate a year that begins with something as quite honestly , incendiary as as quite honestly, incendiary as harry's memoir, spare and ends with the fiasco we had over kobe's end game . he's close to kobe's end game. he's close to the sussexes , in my opinion,
7:40 am
the sussexes, in my opinion, even if he denies it. um, i think that it would be, well, you can't trust them. quite frankly . and so you want those , frankly. and so you want those, you want your family around you. you want to be able to relax. it's quite a formal occasion, of course, with the royals and a large number of changes of, um, clothes that ukip windsor quipped that the royal family christmas was dickens in a cartier setting. absolutely gorgeous . but you exchanged gorgeous. but you exchanged these as i mentioned, amusing gifts . supposedly princess and gifts. supposedly princess and gave, uh, the prince of wales , gave, uh, the prince of wales, uh, a white loose seat and catherine is supposed to have given harry in days gone by. um 6, given harry in days gone by. um a, uh, make your own girlfriend kit, that sort of thing . so kit, that sort of thing. so there's the relaxed side of it and then, of course. and what are the family in the world has two examples of internal internationally, there are watched firstly going to church

8:07 am
is a bit bizarre. uh, but more interestingly, he doesn't mention peace. i thought he would mention something about the or he doesn't the middle east or he doesn't really international really focus on international affairs at all. and i thought that was quite interesting. so he avoided that . um, he actively avoided that. um, but yeah, i mean , he just goes but yeah, i mean, he just goes through a raft of people to thank. another interesting point. i think i'm right in saying that keir starmer is a is a very strong atheist. uh, so yes, i think we should check it, but i'm pretty sure he is . and but i'm pretty sure he is. and yet he's pushing quite a strong christian message there, and quite deliberately so, because it's christian festival , but it's a christian festival, but also because he wants christian votes as well. >> yeah , of course he does. >> yeah, of course he does. >> yeah, of course he does. >> and, uh, i guess he wants to avoid anything contra martial. uh, christmas time. not for uh, it's christmas time. not for making overtly political messages or those that appear to be too political. >> that's right. emily, i think that's a really interesting point. this is a very safe message. you know, it's thanking charities and the churches. it's given a christian message. it's thanking nhs workers, as you
8:08 am
would expect . and people in would expect. and people in hospitality and retail. but it's very it's a very cautious message. there's no hint of a general election in there or, you know, uh , i'm, i understand you know, uh, i'm, i understand that rishi sunak makes reference to, you know , hope and having a to, you know, hope and having a more successful new year , but more successful new year, but there's nothing like that in this message from keir starmer. he doesn't want to be associated with the message. he doesn't want it associated with the general election. >> but there were pictures of him in estonia. so he's he is trying to make perhaps that's a slightly political message , uh, slightly political message, uh, showing that he's with our military personnel and ukraine and everything. >> a problem >> it's always been a problem for that, the way, for labour. that, by the way, hasn't that how they're hasn't it, that how they're perceived comes to the perceived when it comes to the military and national security. so think trying to shore so i think he's trying to shore that up. >> yes. oh, absolutely. that's a weakness labour and always weakness for labour and always has been. they've always been strong on the nhs. but they've always been weak on defence. and this classic , uh, positioning this is classic, uh, positioning in terms of going out wearing a

military uniform. uh associating himself with the armed forces. he's trying to shore up support in that regard , for sure. in that regard, for sure. >> can i ask, how do you think sunakis >> can i ask, how do you think sunak is going to play a little bit later on? we're going to be heanng bit later on? we're going to be hearing from rishi sunak. we'll hearing from rishi sunak. we'll hear bit from ed davey as hear a bit from ed davey as well. yousaf, but let's well. humza yousaf, but let's focus the main man, rishi. focus on on the main man, rishi. how do you think he's going to play how do you think he's going to play because far as we play it? because as far as we are aware, there is going to be are aware, there is going to be a general election next. oh yeah, absolutely. >> you have >> and so you would have thought, he want thought, i mean, he won't want to seen like he's chasing to be seen like he's chasing votes either. so it's a real tightrope. i think starmer got it right. you know it about right. you know he doesn't he's trying to doesn't look like he's trying to win in this message. win votes in this message. but but including the right but it's including all the right messages do that. but i think messages to do that. but i think it'll be interesting to see if sunak appears more desperate. >> yes. >> yes. >> i mean keir starmer, they're definitely , uh, showing definitely, uh, showing that he's side of public he's on the side of public sector workers . sector workers. >> good point. yeah, i think that's really point. and that's a really good point. and ordinary people as well. the ordinary people as well. and the videos, you showing videos, you know, showing hospitality retail workers and

congregations. they're not that they're getting any smaller. but after covid, of course, during covid, there was a lot of streaming went on and a lot of the older parishioners have stuck by that. it saves them coming the whole way into church, because most of these churches are are in the centre of towns. but of course, it doesn't lose the message of christmas indeed the christmas day. it is indeed the birth of christ and the priest here is none other than other martin ohagan, quite martin ohagan, who's quite famous in ireland. he's one of three singing priests that have a record deal, and i've a sony record deal, and i've been to see a few of their concerts, and they are absolutely fabulous and very mystical to listen to. but i caught up with him earlier on on the week, and he talked to me about the importance of the love of christ, what that brings to you, happiness of it, and of you, the happiness of it, and of course, no real course, that there's no real happiness inside material goods . happiness inside material goods. well i suppose there's always an openness and we try to rejoice in the fact that anyone who wants to engage with christ and answer his invitation, then
8:43 am
something new begins to happen . something new begins to happen. >> perhaps we live in a very distracted world today, so distracted world today, so distracted that there is little time to stop, to be still , to time to stop, to be still, to think, to experience silence so the world can be such that our motivation is kidnapped a little bit by the commercial side of things . it's bit by the commercial side of things. it's about getting bit by the commercial side of things . it's about getting the things. it's about getting the right balance in the material world can easily invade and offer us a way of happiness. inverted in inverted commas. but it's not true. lasting happiness is the happiness that we are looking for in christ is something that's everlasting . something that's everlasting. >> well, it really is about the happiness of christ, and it is about the family values that really come around this time of year and the mass that we'll be in this morning. of course, it's not quite the christmas eve
8:44 am
mass. that's at 1130, the christmas eve mass is at 630 this evening. thank you very much, dougie dougie beattie. >> that outside saint patrick's church. he's always been my favourite saint. i think it's fair to say i also have a great party as well. doesn't he? but an amazing story. yes, there's an amazing story. yes, there's an amazing story featured in today's express. a man claims to have travelled all the way from the us to the uk just to throw an egg at our office. >> what a life he must lead. >> what a life he must lead. >> walter masterson shared images online of him on the plane. >> he was proud of it. he was very proud of it with the egg and later on he showed and then later on he showed pictures of lobbing it at pictures of him lobbing it at the revolving doors our the revolving doors to our office. office? office. our office? >> i say no one noticed? >> no , no. >> no, no. >> no, no. >> you know, he's travelled all the way from america. if he hadnt the way from america. if he hadn't put this social hadn't have put this on social media, of us here notice media, none of us here notice you'd done it, mate . but anyway, you'd done it, mate. but anyway, i shouldn't encourage him, should well, it'll a brick next. >> at least it was a happy egg. it an angry egg. so there it wasn't an angry egg. so there you you think he only you go. do you think he only threw one? just single egg?
8:45 am
threw one? just one single egg? no, i know, i don't know. no, i don't know, i don't know. we'll dig into it. >> made an omelette. >> made an omelette. >> joining us now go through >> joining us now to go through some day's headlines is some of the day's headlines is political the political correspondent for the spectator hale spectator magazine, james hale and stephanie and showbiz reporter stephanie takyi. starting takyi. where are we starting now? we're going to start with the james? you've the times, are we, james? you've got for us. so nicholas got a story for us. so nicholas witchell, many us, the witchell, for many of us, the most familiar of all the royal correspondents is retiring from the bbc aged 70. >> years the royal beat >> 25 years on, the royal beat seen a lot big stories in seen a lot of big stories in that time with diana, the queen, etc. and i thought what was interesting he done this interesting was he done this sort and sort of farewell interview and he palace should he said that the palace should have harder with meghan he said that the palace should havesuggestedier with meghan he said that the palace should havesuggested actuallyvieghan he said that the palace should havesuggested actually inghan he said that the palace should havesuggested actually in hisn and suggested actually in his comments, they said that, well, the queen, age she was at the queen, the age she was at perhaps the understanding perhaps wasn't the understanding and prince and empathetic of what prince harry when harry was going through when they big, know, they had the big, you know, sussex ago . and so sussex a few years ago. and so i think that it's just quite interesting that who's interesting that someone who's been sort of quite sympathetic observer the royals the observer of the royals over the years say something like years would say something like this perhaps maybe we one this and perhaps maybe we one that we read this and perhaps maybe we one th.the we read this and perhaps maybe we one th.the years we read this and perhaps maybe we one th.the years to we read this and perhaps maybe we one th.the years to come. we read in the years to come. >> that's quite interesting, isn't it, stephanie? >> a lot royal >> because a lot of royal correspondents appear uh,
8:46 am
correspondents appear to be, uh, well, not necessarily well, let's say not necessarily a meghan. yeah well, let's say not necessarily a no, meghan. yeah well, let's say not necessarily a no, not ghan. yeah well, let's say not necessarily a no, not atan. yeah well, let's say not necessarily a no, not at all. ’eah well, let's say not necessarily a no, not at all. but i guess >> no, not at all. but i guess we've all seen, as we've seen this year, that this is a saga that keeps continuing. it gets more scandalous, more more scandalous, it gets more controversial. and you do think, more scandalous, it gets more contknow, ial. and you do think, more scandalous, it gets more contknow, meghan/ou do think, more scandalous, it gets more contknow, meghan missed:hink, more scandalous, it gets more contknow, meghan missed here, more scandalous, it gets more contknow, meghan missed her part you know, meghan missed her part to be a part of our our royal family. so it's a shame on her. and it's also a shame that the family didn't try as hard to make work between harry and make it work between harry and meghan and them being a part of the as they like to call the firm, as they like to call them. so i guess a lot of things could have been avoided if they did stay as working royals. and maybe side, they maybe on the other side, they did to of keep them a did try to kind of keep them a bit more, who what bit more, but who knows what happens closed doors when happens behind closed doors when it comes to the royals. like we hear a about this harry and hear a lot about this harry and meghan don't meghan saga, but we don't actually what's really happening. >> they could have the >> no, they could have been the fab four. >> but know, christmas is >> but you know, christmas is about branches and about olive branches and uh, seeing seeing your family. >> i'm not sure that's going to happen. look, for feel happen. look, for me, i feel sorry charles because sorry for king charles because we've covered a story earlier on about him supposedly being upset we've covered a story earlier on about not supposedly being upset we've covered a story earlier on about not seeingsedly being upset
8:47 am
we've covered a story earlier on about not seeing archie eing upset we've covered a story earlier on about not seeing archie and upset about not seeing archie and lilibet feel sorry for lilibet. i also feel sorry for archie lilibet, i think. archie and lilibet, i think. and hey, never how these hey, you never know how these things turn out, but i think it's going to be a very difficult thing in the future it's going to be a very diffthemthing in the future it's going to be a very difithem t01g in the future it's going to be a very difithem to justify|e future it's going to be a very difithem to justify whyture it's going to be a very difithem to justify why toe it's going to be a very difithem to justify why to young for them to justify why to young children that they weren't a part of the magic of a royal family. um, we have got family. but, um, we have got quite a different tone now, actually. cleverly actually. james cleverly stephanie has said some weird stuff. >> he's only gone. >> he's only gone. >> he's only gone. >> he's only gone and put his foot in it. um at a downing street reception. usually when journalists go there, whatever's been said is off the record. but what he said is quite damaging because he said that every night it's not illegal to give his wife , susie, a bit of a hypno, wife, susie, a bit of a hypno, which is a date rape drug and this comes as the government is cracking down on date rape drugs, claiming , um, so cracking down on date rape drugs, claiming, um, so i cracking down on date rape drugs, claiming , um, so i don't drugs, claiming, um, so i don't find it funny. i find it quite appalling. this comes from the man who is our home secretary and he said that tackling violence against women and girls is more of a personal priority to him. but behind closed doors , to him. but behind closed doors, he's making such damaging
8:48 am
comments . so how are women comments. so how are women supposed to trust that you're helping them in terms of violence , when you're making violence, when you're making sick and appalling jokes such as this , he has realised he's done this, he has realised he's done wrong so i can imagine we are going to get an apology soon. but and emily, we've had but patrick and emily, we've had 6732 cases as of date . rape, 6732 cases as of date. rape, drugging. so it's nothing to smile about. not all young women who've gone through it to serious to joke about. >> i wouldn't have made those comments myself, and i think that, you know, even in a case where it's supposed to be off the record, i think making those jokes to the, uh, mirror journalist is probably very unwise. the danger unwise. and i think the danger for cleverly is for james cleverly of course, is that comes month after the that it comes a month after the claim insulted stockton in claim he insulted stockton in the house commons. um, so the house of commons. um, so i think the danger that someone think the danger is that someone who to be a safe pair who is meant to be a safe pair of hands suella braverman of hands after suella braverman could actually end up being the opposite, loose lipped to opposite, a bit loose lipped to say the least. >> can, can we? we'll move >> can, um, can we? we'll move it on. we've still got it on. i think we've still got a little bit of time to do a couple of others here. italy let's italy. britons
8:49 am
let's do italy. warning britons to abusing the terme pritt to stop abusing the terme pritt stick what's happening here, stephanie? >> oh, no. >>- >> oh, no. >> no , you go ahead. >> no, you go ahead. >> no, you go ahead. >> yeah, yeah. um, well, this is the fantastic . the fantastic. >> do you like this one? go on. he's all it. he's all over it. >> right? show me. tell me you like drink telling me like a drink without telling me you a drink. you like a drink. >> story close heart. >> story close to my heart. oliver. um basically, is an oliver. um basically, this is an italian they take out italian campaign they take out every year. >> these big adverts on >> they put these big adverts on the saying, is not the tubes saying, this is not prosecco. and it is encourages people know difference people to know the difference between trade between genuine trade mark, italian prosecco and effervescent which effervescent white wine, which they dismissively they sort of very dismissively say is not the real thing. it's not basically there's not pukka. so basically there's a because they're a big campaign because they're concerned of concerned about their kind of copyright breached, copyright being breached, uh, a bit like cornish being bit like cornish pasties being protected, etc. and protected, uh, brand, etc. and so they're having it so they're having to put it everywhere, urging know everywhere, urging brits to know the fake the difference between fake prosecco and real italian prosecco. >> allowed to call? >> are we allowed to call? >> are we allowed to call? >> are we allowed to call? >> are we allowed to call fake prosecco? prosecco? no you can't do that with shallow. >> can't. have to. >> okay, so it's the same. >> okay, so it's the same. >> yeah, but you know, brits love prosecco, so i can understand muddled understand why they get muddled up authentic up between what is authentic

prosecco bit of lambrini . prosecco and a bit of lambrini. um, lambrini lambrini lambrini. >> that takes me back . >> that takes me back. >> that takes me back. >> but i think italians are quite passionate about food and drink, so i'm not surprised that they're doing this to kind of, you know, not make a mockery of their art of making prosecco in these two italian regions . these two italian regions. >> yeah, indeed. i mean, to be fair, emily, you are somebody who really can taste the difference between incredibly expensive champagne and prosecco. i, on the other hand , prosecco. i, on the other hand, i'm not. >> and at this point, i'd like to thank my mother for teaching me so well. so if you're watching, uh, thank you for giving me such a high brow taste . right. >> let's squeeze one more in quickly. priest replaces joseph for same sex nativity scene. pansh for same sex nativity scene. parish priest defends having two mothers of baby jesus as reflective. stephanie, you know, ideally i thought the nativity, the nativity scene is one scene that should be left as it should be, but a priest in italy has removed joseph and added another

9:02 am
for many, many months now . we've for many, many months now. we've made that absolute cast iron commitment. but still there are a few people who think that we're going to stand down for the tories who've broken britain, who've let us all down, who've misled us, betrayed us on immigration and vital things like that, and haven't done brexit properly. so we stand everywhere, 630 seats across england , scotland, wales. we've england, scotland, wales. we've got over 440 candidates already lined up and we've got a big press conference, uh, straight back in the new year, on january the 3rd. we've got our spring conference on the, uh, february the 24th, when we'll be showing off lots of candidates . off lots of those candidates. so, yeah, we're ready. we can't wait. only thing i think the wait. the only thing i think the country is ready is for ready for rishi to call an election, as far as i'm concerned. >> well, richard, some would criticise you and your party for making a labour victory more likely. what do you say to them? >> um, we're going to be targeting the complete failures of labour's policies for what they are that anybody can

are protesting here, those in china don't really see it. and of course , it's a black market of course, it's a black market industry. it's a black market industry. it's a black market industry whereby annabel would have been a stolen pet and therefore she's a free product to be sold. can i can i just get involved? >> of course you can. >>— >> of course you can. >> the more you're involved, the better. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> hello. hello gorgeous. so this is annabel. >> this is annabel. she's missing an eye, but she's still very much with us come week. >> so if we have a little look here. annabel. hello, gorgeous. so, annabel. gosh. bless so, so. annabel. oh, gosh. bless her. okay, so the eyes, uh , gone her. okay, so the eyes, uh, gone there and we think that's probably because of some form of abuse. >> the antlers have gone just whipped off her antlers. the antlers. so, um, to. and i can't help but notice he's missing tail. >> felicity's missing a tail. hello, felicity. >> because it was cut off. you know she came from? i know where she came from? i mean, thing our dogs mean, the thing about our dogs for adoption is they're not always perfect. and i know people have really high people have often really high expectations. they want a puppy , expectations. they want a puppy, or they've a photo of a or they've seen a photo of a particular breed, but really, it's the spirit of the animal

that means everything . that means everything. >> yeah, definitely. >> yeah, definitely. >> and remind me what these breeds are. >> this is a chow chow. chow chow. everybody says, oh, chow chow. everybody says, oh, chow chow. not friendly . chow. they're not very friendly. you cuddle them. you can't really cuddle them. but these teddy but i mean, look at these teddy bear looks like she likes a cuddle. >> and they've got the quite famous black tongue. >> they do? they have >> they do? yeah they have a black tongue. >> there you go. that see what i mean? she loves people . mean? she loves people. >> they all have a tongue like that. they do. that. and they do. >> are these two >> how old are these two beauties then? >> so this is another reason i brought them, because we to brought them, because we try to promote dogs. promote slightly older dogs. i know everybody does want a puppy' know everybody does want a puppy, but they're really hard work. so is nearly work. so so annabel is nearly eight and felicity is seven nine. and for me, i think that's a great age for adoption because they've already got their character settled in, in that they're little bit sure of they're a little bit sure of themselves, but they're still young enough that they have young enough that they can have some fun. >> what types people come >> and what types of people come to oh , well, we've had so many >> oh, well, we've had so many different types of people, like two the dogs that we got two of the dogs that we got adopted out this christmas have
9:38 am
gone to people with disabilities. they're actually got disabilities . so got hearing disabilities. so even though our dogs are not trained service dogs, they seem to be able to relate to people with disabilities very well. we've had an eminent surgeon who's adopted one of our dogs, um, and we also have quite a few elderly people. >> oh, blessed. >> oh, blessed. >> they're very beautiful and very well behaved. >> they are very , very well >> they are very, very well behaved. so how people behaved. and so how can people come you and see the come and find you and see the kind of dogs that you've got and, and all of that stuff? >> how can people get hold? >> how can people get hold? >> well, patrick, we're actually doing if anyone's available on boxing we're boxing day this year, we're going to be doing in the afternoon in regent's afternoon a dog walk in regent's park some of our rescues park with some of our rescues and also some of the newly adopted yeah. and anyone adopted dogs. yeah. and anyone who's who's on their who's in london, who's on their own to down, own and wants to come down, they're more welcome to and they're more than welcome to and they're more than welcome to and they can actually meet some of them. and have a walk with us. oh um, and the main way to oh um, and also the main way to contact is our website contact us is via our website wno dogmeat .com. um, and, wno to dogmeat .com. um, and, and we would really need your
9:39 am
support because we're only a small charity. >> may i just ask one question? >> may i just ask one question? >> how did you become passionate about no to dog meat. did you see it? did you just hear about it? what it? it? what was it? >> yeah, i'm actually a lawyer by for sins. um, by profession for my sins. um, and i was working out in hong kong at the time in 2009, and i went over to china and i saw the cruelty with my own eyes. so then i just decided, right, i'm going to go around and ask for help. and of course, sometime later, was coming . later, not much help was coming. so we started a social media campaign . then that campaign. and then after that started the charity. and then when my mum died in 2018, sadly of dementia , i set up the of dementia, i set up the shelter in china and we've got more than 500 dogs there now , more than 500 dogs there now, desperately needing homes and support . support. >> and the thing is as well now firstly, can i just ask, is it possible for me to just stand up a little bit here? >> yeah . take felicia, she loves >> yeah. take felicia, she loves to stand there she goes. to stand up. there she goes. >> all right. all i tell >> okay. all right. all i tell you.cani >> okay. all right. all i tell you. can i just say i wanted to do this because you just see that this. a cloud.
9:40 am
that this. she's like a cloud. >> she's like a like a cloud . >> she's like a like a cloud. >> she's like a like a cloud. >> like a big polar bear. >> like a big polar bear. >> you just want to give her a proper cuddle, to give her cuddle. >> now, i've been battering away at emily get a dog for ages, at emily to get a dog for ages, but have the time but we can't have the time because always here, i'm because we're always here, i'm afraid. now are afraid. but and now these are not just, you know, rescue dogs for but people for themselves, but also people out there at the moment who are suffering with loneliness or things that. you know, things like that. and you know, really use with with really could use with a with a bit company, couldn't they. bit of company, couldn't they. >> mean, live on my own and >> i mean, i live on my own and a lot of people live on their own and especially around christmas family christmas time, it's very family oriented. and you just find that when you've got the dogs , you're when you've got the dogs, you're never um so you may never on your own. um so you may have gb news playing in the background, at you've background, but at least you've got cuddles well. got dog cuddles as well. >> so and we're on radio so you can take us with you, but also it gives you a reason to go out. right? a reason to get up in the morning, a reason go to morning, a reason to go to the shops, go a walk. um, and shops, to go for a walk. um, and you can also make friends through your can't you? through your dogs, can't you? >> mean, if you're out >> well, i mean, if you're out with felicity, let's with a dog like felicity, let's face you're stopped every
9:41 am
face it, you're stopped every five going to get chatty. nato and we maybe and that's why we maybe a slightly different some other charities we don't exclude charities that we don't exclude people in an people if they live in an apartment or if they're elderly. um, always if um, because we always say if something , we'll take something happens, we'll take the dog back just we just the dog back and it just we just find that people get and find that people get out and about more. well, so there's no such home, is there? >> no , no. >> no, no. >> no, no. >> and most, most dogs will be much with a caring owner. >> i mean, felicity does love shopping, so she's very popular on street, always trying on oxford street, always trying to into the shops. to go into the shops. >> you go to oxford street, do you panic buying, panic buying for oh, the coming >> oh, the paws coming up. >> oh, the paws coming up. >> bless baby. >> oh bless you baby. >> oh bless you baby. >> all right. well we're going to keep the dogs in the studio for now. and we're going to return a little bit return to them a little bit a little bit later on. and boy oh bless okay there we go. but bless you okay there we go. but there is an amazing story as well that's been featured in today's express. so we're going today's express. so we're going to whizz you through a couple of stories. and we're going to go to a couple of your wonderful pictures as well. a bloke apparently travelled all the way pictures as well. a bloke appa america velled all the way pictures as well. a bloke appa america justzd all the way pictures as well. a bloke appa america justzd all tiupvay from america just to turn up outside and throw an outside our offices and throw an 999
