12:11 pm
and stare at the tv for half an hour. don't feel forced to have fun. than fun. there's nothing worse than forced fun. so enjoy yourself. be selfish. be communicative and plan it out and you'll have a great night. there's no expectation. it's all about enjoying yourself too much pressure on us. pressure on us. >> pressure on us. >> alex. thank you so much for joining and good luck with joining us and good luck with tonight goes and tonight. hope all goes well and a happy new year to you and a very happy new year to you and yours. thank very for yours. thank you very much for joining us and thank you. right, okay. now i'm going to talk to my lovely panel about this. first of all, charlie and benjamin how you both benjamin, um, how are you both celebrating ? have you got plans celebrating? have you got plans or are you going be like or are you going to be like me and out 9:00? and probably flake out at 9:00? well love he talked well i just love that he talked about new year's eve. about eating on new year's eve. >> i go straight for drinking. >> the e though . >> this is the problem, though. >> this is the problem, though. >> this is problem, isn't >> this is the problem, isn't it? yourself hard. >> no , i mean, i'm glad i'm >> no, i mean, i'm glad i'm doing this show because it's stopping me from starting the stopping me from starting on the champagne. socialist. >> yeah, exactly . yeah. hold on. >> yeah, exactly. yeah. hold on. that's my. plus. >> it is ten past midday. >> it is ten past midday. >> um, but do you know what i find? new year's eve a terrible stress because any other weekend of the year , you know, it's
12:12 pm
of the year, you know, it's pretty easy to find . you know, pretty easy to find. you know, if you're lucky, it's easy to find friends that, you know, might want to have one drink with or go out for meal or with or go out for a meal or something don't something like that. you don't worry there's no something like that. you don't worraround there's no something like that. you don't worraround entertainio one around you entertain yourself, and then new year's eve comes and it's eve comes along and it's just this you this enormous pressure that you must must must have a good time. it must be it must be be a fabulous night. it must be excessive. and i find that all a bit stressful. so you know, i'm not quite the age where i want to have my feet up at home. i had to do that during covid, like everybody , it was a bit like everybody, it was a bit glum, but i envy the people that can way because can enjoy it that way because they the they managed to circumvent the stress eve. stress of new year's eve. >> you, charlie? what >> how about you, charlie? what are to? are you up to? >> well, i've very lucky >> well, i've been very lucky this because this year, i think because i didn't plans until didn't have any plans until about even as about two days ago, and even as i was on the train in, somebody messaged say, would to messaged to say, would i like to go about six? and go for dinner at about six? and they booked somewhere. so i thought, won't say no thought, well, i won't say no for free lunch. yeah, for a free lunch. and um, yeah, but to i am going for a free lunch. and um, yeah, butuh to i am going for a free lunch. and um, yeah, butuh , to i am going for a free lunch. and um, yeah, butuh , the to i am going for a free lunch. and um, yeah, butuh , the terrace to i am going for a free lunch. and um, yeah, butuh , the terrace on i am going for a free lunch. and um, yeah, butuh , the terrace on the] going for a free lunch. and um, yeah, butuh , the terrace on the house to, uh, the terrace on the house of commons later on to watch the, uh. oh, wow. >> so you're get to see >> so you're gonna get to see the well. the fireworks as well. >> i've been before, even >> i've never been before, even
12:13 pm
though opportunities >> i've never been before, even th> i've never been before, even th> i've never been before, even th> i've never been before, even th> i've never been before, even th> so as a tory. >> yeah, that's a whole. >> yeah, that's a whole. >> i'll be there next year. >> i'll be there next year. >> i'll be there next year. >> i couldn't say no, i couldn't say i'll having say no. so i'll be having a lovely meal, and then lovely meal, a meal, and then watching the fireworks and, um, having old time. brilliant >> you're mean, there's brilliant >.horrible|'re mean, there's brilliant >.horrible|'re todayzan, there's brilliant >.horrible|'re today thatthere's a horrible story today that a fifth now fifth of under 25 are now teetotal. know you're slightly teetotal. i know you're slightly older you, older than that, the two of you, but that is a vicious, very only slightly. i did that only slightly. >> think to yourself . so >> think to yourself. so >> think to yourself. so >> yeah, i think i think no, you're right that a lot of you know, i went to speak at exeter university recently and i was fascinated by of them, fascinated by how many of them, uh, didn't drink. but they also, i dare look they look i dare say they look they look a lot when hit lot healthier when they hit their like charlie and their 30s. like like charlie and me, um , but the fact me, you know, um, but the fact is that actually , you know, is that actually, you know, getting too drunk, drinking too much, lots of people much, you get lots of people that wake up on new day that wake up on new year's day with hangover with mistakes, with a hangover with mistakes, maybe having of maybe have having had a bit of a row with people don't have row with people they don't have a you know, a row with. and so do you know, i think there's a good logic to not that , because we all not doing that, because we all
12:14 pm
think our year's think about our new year's resolutions, about being a better and better version of ourselves, and then get hammered, then we all go and get hammered, do something stupid and wake up at 1st of january, at midday on the 1st of january, which a great start. at midday on the 1st of january, whino? a great start. at midday on the 1st of january, whino? how great start. at midday on the 1st of january, whi no? how about start. at midday on the 1st of january, whino? how about yout. at midday on the 1st of january, whino? how about you ? >> no? how about you? >> no? how about you? >> i think that's absolutely right. people right. and i think young people today changing what they today are changing what they sort drinking and what sort of drinking and what they're because of the they're intaking because of the social of sense. social media sort of sense. >> yes, yes. »- >> yes, yes. >> point . image. and so you >> good point. image. and so you see now, people see lots of people now, people don't or don't drink pints of ale or lager . i don't drink pints of ale or lager. i mean, like lager. i mean, i still like a lagen lager. i mean, i still like a lager. i'll swallow anything. lager. i mean, i still like a lager. you swallow anything. lager. i mean, i still like a lager. you knowiw anything. lager. i mean, i still like a lager. you know ,i anything. lager. i mean, i still like a lager. you know , but/thing. lager. i mean, i still like a lager. you know , but more. lager. i mean, i still like a lager. you know , but more people but i, you know, but more people are drinking sort of slim, slim line drinks or gins and yes, yeah, add and mixers. so yeah, spirits add and mixers. so it's not the, you know , the it's not the, you know, the traditional drinking that you'd expect at christmas and new yeah >> there's e there's advice e advice that >> so there's the advice that you too drunk and you shouldn't get too drunk and you shouldn't get too drunk and you spend night you shouldn't spend all night partying. neither of us partying. none neither of us will live. >> none of which you know. you listen to your advice . thank listen to your own advice. thank you we'll you very much, gents. we'll be coming now, coming back to you soon. now, um, the big question is about from drinking and staying up is how are you going to get to see your loved ones, your relatives, your loved ones, where you want to be on new year's eve? uh, eurostar was having a complete meltdown
12:15 pm
yesterday, said it is yesterday, and it said it is running services today to running all services today to london, and brussels and london, paris and brussels and amsterdam. uh, new plans amsterdam. uh, new year plans for thousands were in ruin after flooding yesterday. um, in a tunnel under the river thames led to the cancellation of all services between london and paris, and it was a nightmare and i think they are still struggling to get passengers where need uh, where they need to be. uh, joining us is travel joining us now is travel expert simon calder. um, simon, what what is going on? are we back to normal on eurostar now ? normal on eurostar now? >> well, look , i've been at, uh, >> well, look, i've been at, uh, london. saint pancras international since early on this morning, as i was yesterday i >> -- >> um, i've 5mm >> um, i've just returned from there. indeed. but, uh, because it was getting very cold and very, uh , very quiet, and that very, uh, very quiet, and that was a good sign. but look , let was a good sign. but look, let me just take you back 24 hours and you had the site of all 41 eurostar trains from london to paris, amsterdam, brussels, back . that represents over 30,000 passengers who were told, sorry ,
12:16 pm
passengers who were told, sorry, your new year travel plans are in tatters . um, it's been an in tatters. um, it's been an awful lot better today. you can see things moving actually fairly swiftly there and very few people actually queuing. there was a big throng this morning. first thing, but that was because everybody had thought it was booked on today's trains, thought crikey, better get early anyway , that was get there early anyway, that was soon and it's all now soon cleared and it's all now looking um, quite looking quite, um, quite sensible . all however, those sensible. all however, those 30,000 people aren't being told there's no chance of travelling to date. there aren't going to be any extra trains, so you're going to have to just jolly well wait and, um, we'll get you back when we can. which could be, uh, new year's day . it could be a new year's day. it could be a couple of days from now. absolutely miserable for people who were caught up by that flood in the thames tunnel. they go to the back of the queue after everybody who's got existing reservations. >> oh, that sounds so unfair. and sam, there was also a story
12:17 pm
that the airlines are ripping people off by charging extortionate fares to get to paris and capitalising on people's misery. basically >> well, i think the airlines would simply say one word to you, dawn algorithms. they were just explain that if there's a lot of sudden demand for their fares , their, uh, systems are fares, their, uh, systems are programmed to reflect that. and it's a very good way of allocating scarce capacity. i couldn't believe it. last night i was tracking the fares coming from paris to london because a large number of people have been in touch saying, help! what do i do ? and i said, well, you know, do? and i said, well, you know, you can. you can fly. and uh, mid—afternoon it was about £350, one way. the last ticket on british airways for travel today from paris to london got sold for almost £700. wow so basically 40 minute flight now actually , i don't fault the actually, i don't fault the airlines. i mean, in the reverse situation, you know, if all the flights to amsterdam and paris
12:18 pm
and brussels are cancelled , then and brussels are cancelled, then eurostar is going to put up its flights and its fares and uh, uh, good, good luck to it . um, uh, good, good luck to it. um, and, and uh , it's just a and, and uh, it's just a reflection . i'm afraid of the reflection. i'm afraid of the fact that you've got so much demand at a time when everybody is emotionally invested in getting where they need to be. um, and it's just so sad that they're still going to be people stuck out of position in, in budget hotels. um, when they should be with their loved ones, not how you want to see in the new year. >> simon. just quickly, how are the today? dover >> simon. just quickly, how are the folkestone today? dover >> simon. just quickly, how are the folkestone operating)ver >> simon. just quickly, how are the folkestone operating ?er >> simon. just quickly, how are the folkestone operating ? okay. and folkestone operating? okay. yeah they're they're working pretty well, actually . pretty well, actually. >> they're going to be a bit more crowded because lots of people coming back boat . people are coming back by boat. but, um, it's as easy as it but, um, it's not as easy as it used to be, but i'm talking to people who sailing from people who are sailing from newhaven . there's newhaven to dieppe. there's another couple came in from caen in to portsmouth this in normandy to portsmouth this morning, and then suddenly found that all of rail that all kinds of rail replacement things going on on
12:19 pm
the , but, uh, they, they the trains, but, uh, they, they all getting in. and if you're driving, uh, not very long queues at, uh, dover to get onto the get through the ferries, get through passport control. so you're are in a relatively good position and i hope everybody gets where they need to be and has a wonderful new year. and that we start 2024. with a bit less start 2024. and with a bit less chaos than we've had this year. if mind, that going if you don't mind, is that going to prediction, though? to be your prediction, though? >> simon? >> simon? >> not a prediction at all. no, it's a hope. >> desperate hope that i'm clinging to as i, as i, um, uh, emulate , uh, benjamin and emulate, uh, benjamin and charlie and, uh, have a gentle sip to, uh , welcome in the new sip to, uh, welcome in the new yeah >> brilliant . >> brilliant. >> brilliant. >> thank you so much. that's simon calder there. thank you very much for joining simon calder there. thank you very much forjoining us. and a very much forjoining us. and a very year to you and very happy new year to you and yours . well, i mean, thankfully , yours. well, i mean, thankfully, eurostar is operating, but i thought what simon was saying there was appalling that the people that couldn't travel yesterday are now the back of the queue . the queue. >> yeah. i mean look i do agree with the sympathy with airlines because and because it's a business and that's free market works.
12:20 pm
that's how a free market works. but the fact that the trains are such a mess, i mean, the such a mess, i mean, one of the main is that main reasons, of course, is that today's a sunday and you've had months of these disputes between the unions, the government the trade unions, the government and companies, particularly and the companies, particularly of avanti coast. so it of avanti west coast. and so it relies on train drivers being willing to do overtime and so, because new year's eve has fallen on a sunday day, you've got these massive shortages across the country because they're of semi strike they're sort of semi strike action continuing in refusing action is continuing in refusing to do overtime. i know that scotrail in scotland, uh, is stopping at 7 pm, so if you want to get to hogmanay you're going to have a tough time. the six do not travel routes on northern, so you know it really is a nightmare. i dare say we talked about the algorithms of airlines. i think those taxi companies are going to be having a with the a fantastic night with the algorithms , because you're going algorithms, because you're going to you're to have surge pricing if you're getting one of those, charlie. but you lots but i think in london you lots of the tube lines and, um , bus of the tube lines and, um, bus services are running all night, aren't they , to get revellers home. >> they are. and you know, that's between tfl and that's a deal between tfl and department of transport to pay.
12:21 pm
>> obviously those drivers, you know overtime and their know a lot of overtime and their younger drivers tend to be if younger drivers tend to be if you look out, that will you have to look out, that will do jobs. don't do those those jobs. so i don't know this. know why we don't have this. well why we always have the situation every year where and it unions it does tend to be the unions that these set that are always using these set piece you know, time piece periods of, you know, time of , of cheer piece periods of, you know, time of, of cheer and joy for the rest of they're using that rest of us, they're using that against the public to, to try and squeeze the public purse, even, even . more. i mean, i'm even, even. more. i mean, i'm all for paying people that work the overtime. absolutely. but it's that always it's the unions that will always try call on these try and call the call on these strikes we need strikes at times when we need transport the most. have transport the most. but i have to response to, to to say, just in response to, to simon once going simon as well, i once was going back brussels new i back to brussels for new year. i decided because i was decided i'd go because i was working the time. decided i'd go because i was worki a| the time. decided i'd go because i was worki a terrible the time. decided i'd go because i was worki a terrible idea. the time. decided i'd go because i was worki a terrible idea. andtime. what a terrible idea. and i couldn't, , i couldn't couldn't, i couldn't, i couldn't they sent me back. they they voted me to leave , but but i voted for me to leave, but but i couldn't back. so i ended up couldn't get back. so i ended up getting a bus and it was a seven hour bus, um, which cost about £40 at the minute because £40 at the last minute because the yeah yeah. so i the trains were. yeah yeah. so i looked the night before because i could see the trains were cancelled. a.m. cancelled. so it was a 6 am. bus. you have had to
12:22 pm
bus. so you would have had to have basically, or. have left now basically, or. well this the problem isn't it? >> i mean, the advice is if you're get somewhere, you're trying to get somewhere, leave now. make sure you get there very there on time. thank you very much. now not much. i'm off. not now, not literally much. i'm off. not now, not lite ohy much. i'm off. not now, not lite oh , much. i'm off. not now, not liteoh , i'm neither of you. >> oh, i'm neither of you. >> oh, i'm neither of you. >> right. okay um. do not move. um we're moving on now. um, american bully xl dogs in england and wales must now be kept on a lead and muzzled in pubuc kept on a lead and muzzled in public breeding. selling or abandoning american bully xl dogsis abandoning american bully xl dogs is also illegal. but is it down to the dog or the owner? this is the age old question is it a dangerous dogs? uh, joining us help break down the new us to help break down the new rules rob . rules is dog trainer rob. elaine. rob, thank you very much for joining us today. um so what forjoining us today. um so what the new rules coming to force today, can you just explain briefly what they mean? if you are an owner of a xl bully ? are an owner of a xl bully? >> so what it will mean now is it will mean you'll have to register it to say that you own an xl bully. you'll have to have it microchipped. you'll have to
12:23 pm
have third party insurance . and have third party insurance. and you'll have to keep it on a lead and muzzle in any public place, which will include, for example, in car , for in your car, uh, your car, for the purposes this act, is the purposes of this act, is seen public place. so you seen as a public place. so you could um, just for could be, um, charged just for having in car without having it in the car without a lead that's amazing. lead on. that's amazing. >> i mean, it's not like the police have got a lot to do in any case, is it? but the age old question dangerous is , question with dangerous dogs is, is it the owner? is it bad owners or it bad dogs ? owners or is it bad dogs? >> well , um, owners or is it bad dogs? >> well, um, there's always been that adage there are no bad dogs, only bad owners. and i personally never thought that to be true. there are be quite true. there are some dogs, some people that are dogs, like some people that are just bad . usually just kind of born bad. usually it's down very poor genetics . it's down to very poor genetics. and certainly we've seen in and certainly we've seen this in the there some the xl bully. there are some bloodlines are worse than bloodlines that are worse than others, and you see some dogs that i've seen as puppies that you straight away think at 4 or 5 months old, there's something not that dog. and not right with that dog. and there a genetic there is a genetic predisposition within some bloodlines . um, and of course,
12:24 pm
bloodlines. um, and of course, the dog you're showing there looks terrifying. it does look at that dog. somebody's cropped its ears again in this one. somebody cut its ears off to make it look more hostile. and so of course, the perception is this dog is more dangerous because somebody make because somebody tried to make it . and in fact, it look dangerous. and in fact, that may a wonderful that dog may have a wonderful temperament. but what i've seen is awful lot of xl bullies is an awful lot of xl bullies who fantastic temperaments, who have fantastic temperaments, as most bull breeds do . but if as most bull breeds do. but if you're the sort of person who wants to take a dog and make it too dangerous, well then can too dangerous, well then you can do can with any do that just as you can with any dog can take any dog, bring dog you can take any dog, bring it up badly, it become it up badly, and it will become a behaved dog. and so my a badly behaved dog. and so my argument always been, like argument has always been, like with we with every other law, what we should do is punish the actual offender the owner, offender, which is the owner, not the dog. you know, if i stab you, we don't punish the knife, we me because i'm one you, we don't punish the knife, we was me because i'm one you, we don't punish the knife, we was inne because i'm one you, we don't punish the knife, we was in control|use i'm one you, we don't punish the knife, we was in control ofe i'm one you, we don't punish the knife, we was in control of iti'm one you, we don't punish the knife, we was in control of it .n one you, we don't punish the knife, we was in control of it . and one you, we don't punish the knife, we was in control of it . and i one who was in control of it. and i think should be true think the same should be true with if we look with these dogs. if we look at almost every case where somebody's killed by one, somebody's been killed by one, it's one where the owner wasn't present. dog escaped. it's one where the owner wasn't presegot dog escaped. it's one where the owner wasn't presegot out dog escaped. it's one where the owner wasn't presegot out .iog escaped. it's one where the owner wasn't presegot out . um, escaped. it's one where the owner wasn't presegot out . um, yeah. aped. it's one where the owner wasn't presegot out . um, yeah. we d.
12:25 pm
it's one where the owner wasn't presegot out . um, yeah. we can he's got out. um, yeah. we can see that's not going to change if you see here again in this video, which many of us have seen, where's the owner ? it's seen, where's the owner? it's a loose dog. that's not the dog's fault. the owner allowed that dog to be at large and that's what we see time and time and time again with these dogs. it's some irresponsible that some irresponsible person that allowed the dog to be at large. we should be punishing the owner, not the dog. >> so rob , if you if you are the >> so rob, if you if you are the owner of an xl bully, you can register and get have register it and get an and have it added index of it added to the index of exempting dogs. i understand . exempting dogs. i understand. >> all right. yeah >> all right. yeah >> um, of course by doing that, what's going to happen? and i've had several people contact me who are registering their dogs , who are registering their dogs, even though they genuinely believe it. not to be an xl bully simply because it looks like one. um, and they're worried that if they don't register it and they get stopped by the police , they could end up by the police, they could end up losing their going court, losing their dog going to court, etc. just a friend of etc. so, uh, just a friend of mine, just recently, a couple of days contacted me. her dog days ago, contacted me. her dog is staffordshire bull is a mastiff staffordshire bull terrier bought it as
12:26 pm
terrier cross. she bought it as one. the owner . she saw one. she saw the owner. she saw the parents when the dog was born. but looks like an xl born. but it looks like an xl bully she's this dilemma. bully. so she's in this dilemma. do i not register it and run the risk of getting prosecuted? do i register even though i know it isn't one? um, then i have isn't one? um, and then i have to keep my dog on the lead the rest life. to keep my dog on the lead the restthis life. to keep my dog on the lead the restthis islife. to keep my dog on the lead the restthis is the problem, isn't >> this is the problem, isn't it? we're now tasking it? and we're now tasking our, um, officer to, know, um, police officer to, you know, barely have to with barely have time to deal with burglaries and other serious crime with identifying what is actually an xl bully. well what will happen, i suspect, is none thing really will get done if we look at the dangerous dogs act. >> it's been around since 1990 andifs >> it's been around since 1990 and it's estimated 33 years later there are more pit bull terriers in this country than there were when the act came in. it failed on every level, spectacularly , and this will be spectacularly, and this will be no different . there are even no different. there are even less resources available now than there were then, and i you know, if i go down to london now, i will see pit bull terriers walking around the streets. vast streets. um, but the vast majority are majority of people are responsible and responsible with them and i don't the police or any don't think the police or any other want to put
12:27 pm
other agency want to put down perfectly healthy dogs. if perfectly fit, healthy dogs. if an is being responsible an owner is being responsible with it. so i it's even with it. so i think it's even less likely to happen in 2023, 33 years later. we see it hasn't even worked with one breed. why do we think it's going to be any more ? you've got lots do we think it's going to be any m

own a perfectly well—behaved or, um, xl bully, but they're not quite sure what to do. just a quick bit of advice. what they should with their dog. should do now with their dog. >> there are lots of places. >> so there are lots of places. if you on social media, if you look on social media, particularly facebook, particularly on facebook, there are dog trainers so are lots of dog trainers and so on offering facilities on who are offering facilities to train your dog in to help you train your dog in private fields they're private fields that they're renting. you can there. renting. so you can go there. you can your dog there, you can take your dog there, know not going know that you're not going to be coloured anybody coloured by anybody else, and you learn control you can learn how to control that and certainly that dog safely. and certainly there lots of people there are lots of people offering not offering that. if you're not sure to all means sure where to go, by all means you contact me, um, over you can contact me, um, over through website or via email. through my website or via email. rob, elaine , aol.com and i can rob, elaine, aol.com and i can put you in touch with some people who will you. there people who will help you. there are the vast are lots and lots. the vast majority of owners are very responsible and just want to know what to do next. you don't have to put your dog to sleep as you've already you you've already mentioned, you can exempted , may can have it exempted, which may mean it on mean that you have to keep it on a when you're a lead and muzzle when you're out. you still get out. but at least you still get to your you don't to keep your dog. you don't have to keep your dog. you don't have to to sleep. to put your dog to sleep. >> that's good >> rob, that's really good advice. so much for advice. thank you so much for joining us today. it's rob, a lane dog trainer there and a very new year to you
12:29 pm
very happy new year to you and yours as well. thank you for joining charlie joining us. benjamin and charlie . i mean we've horrible . i mean we've heard horrible stories about people , you know, stories about people, you know, dumping dogs. it's just incredibly sad that people feel that pressurised by that . that pressurised by that. >> yeah, i think that's one of the, um , uh, the big sadnesses the, um, uh, the big sadnesses about this whole story. you know, we are a nation of animal lovers, nation of dog lovers. and so the fact that people feel that to either ditch that pressure to either ditch their because their current dog because they're not quite sure where the rules, are rules, rules and regulations are going land, whether they're going to land, whether they're affected or not. um, that affected or not. um, but that was fascinating and was a fascinating interview. and it's absolutely right. you know, it's absolutely right. you know, it's responsible, it's down to the responsible, you us as responsible dog you know, us as responsible dog owners . i'm not dog owner, owners. i'm not a dog owner, but, it individuals but, you know, it is individuals that after their that have to look after their dogs shouldn't dogs because it shouldn't be a job for the police to do. people want streets. job for the police to do. people warthe streets. job for the police to do. people warthe police streets. job for the police to do. people warthe police can'tstreets. job for the police to do. people warthe police can't tackle >> the police can't tackle burglars and assault. mean, burglars and assault. i mean, how to identify how are they meant to identify what bully is ? what an xl bully is? >> precisely. >> precisely. >> and the thing, because >> precisely. >> .know the thing, because >> precisely. >> .know , the thing, because >> precisely. >> .know , the :he thing, because >> precisely. >> .know , the xl thing, because >> precisely. >> .know , the xl bully because >> precisely. >> .know , the xl bully bia ause >> precisely. >> .know , the xl bully bia very you know, the xl bully is a very recent you know, recent breed. it's, you know, several others combined in, in quite recent history. and so there are a lot of other dogs which look very similar to xl bullies. it's difficult for experts to be sure. exactly
12:30 pm
which dog is an xl bully and which dog is an xl bully and which isn't, because their similarities. and think of similarities. and i think one of the that a ban would the reasons that a ban would fail as legislation is because people it doesn't look at the human reasons as he outlined, as rob outlined, which is that they're dogs they're getting these dogs as status that's why they status symbols. that's why they want be aggressive in want them to be aggressive in some you can ban this some cases. so you can ban this breed of dog, which is slightly difficult to identify in the first place. but you won't be stopping those that stopping those people that want status . symbols. there's a status. symbols. there's a reason they have an xl bully, not a poodle, and you're not solving that problem by banning one type thing, isn't it? >> are >> yeah, but many people are responsible please responsible owners. but please listen to advice don't listen to rob advice and don't panic. things you can panic. there are things you can do. go to his website and check out advice he will give out what advice he will give you. um, you're watching and listening sunday with listening to gb news sunday with me. dawn neesom coming up. it's, um, mr veg with all her predictions of what the new year will bring you . but first, let's will bring you. but first, let's check out what the weather's doing, shall we? good morning. >> welcome to your latest gb news weather forecast i'm craig snell. as we go through

1:19 pm
reception, we've done the a la carte, we've done all smaller reception, we've done the a la carte, we've done all that ler reception, we've done the a la carte, we've done all that kind menu, we've done all that kind of and for year, of stuff. and for this year, i've decided year only i've decided for one year only that to give the that we're going to give all the guys because the guys a night off because the staff absolutely amazing. staff are absolutely amazing. that our here. so that work in our team here. so we're going take night that work in our team here. so we'|it's)ing take night that work in our team here. so we'|it's a1g take night that work in our team here. so we'|it's a sunday.e night that work in our team here. so we'|it's a sunday. it's night that work in our team here. so we'|it's a sunday. it's prettyt off. it's a sunday. it's pretty miserable out there and we're going out. going to going to go out. we're going to have to go have dinner. we're going to go out family out with our friends, our family and of and and all that kind of stuff, and we're to have an amazing we're going to have an amazing night. that's our night. that's that's what our plan kind plan for, for us, it's a kind of an bonus an extra little christmas bonus for for working so for all the team for working so hard that's such a hard this year. that's such a lovely people hard this year. that's such a lovely sort people hard this year. that's such a lovely sort underestimate how always sort of underestimate how hard in hospitality industry. >> i mean, you've just had sort of like christmas, which is non—stop all, and so non—stop for you all, and so it's such a nice idea to treat the yeah. mean , look, we're >> yeah. i mean, look, we're blessed when covid happened , i blessed when covid happened, i kept the whole team on full pay , kept the whole team on full pay, full reward full everything. and in reward i got back on my brother who works with me in the restaurant. the all stayed on with us. all the guys stayed on with us. incredible loyalty. said, incredible loyalty. so we said, look, we've an look, you know, we've got an amazing team. we work really, really killarney is quite really hard. killarney is quite possibly the most beautiful place earth, say that place on earth, and i say that slightly but actually slightly biased, but i actually really an really do mean it. and it's an absolute place. so absolute stunning place. so we're seven days a week we're flat out seven days a week from up until from pretty much march up until the october, and it's to
1:20 pm
the end of october, and it's to great be able to reward the guys who've worked so hard and turn around and say, do you know what? out, enjoy yourselves, what? go out, enjoy yourselves, have with friends have fun with your friends and your ring the your family too, and ring in the new people who new year with the people who mean that's mean a lot to you. so that's that's our plan. >> that's it's that's exactly why you should be doing. do you get customers though regular customers really customers going? well, i really wanted to come for dinner tonight. doing? tonight. what are you doing? shutting >> it's w“ shutting >> it's bit like >> yeah, but it's a bit like when a nurse or a doctor gets sick. you kind of go, well, you're there kind of mind me you're there to kind of mind me when sick, forget, when i get sick, people forget, you have too. you know, we have a life, too. uh, and we're go uh, and so we're going to go out and there's and enjoy it, and there's a few people. so what we said to them, listen, when they listen, most people, when they come down for listen, most people, when they come days down for listen, most people, when they come days over down for listen, most people, when they come days over christmas/n for listen, most people, when they come days over christmas and r a few days over christmas and new so say, look, a few days over christmas and new closedyo say, look, a few days over christmas and new closed on say, look, a few days over christmas and new closed on saum,ok, a few days over christmas and new closed on sa um,ok, new we're closed on the, um, on new year's night, come in we're closed on the, um, on new yea night night, come in we're closed on the, um, on new yea night before come in we're closed on the, um, on new yea night before comeie in we're closed on the, um, on new yea night before come in n we're closed on the, um, on new yea night before come in on we're closed on the, um, on new yea 2ndit before come in on we're closed on the, um, on new yea 2nd ofefore come in on we're closed on the, um, on new yea 2nd ofefore we'rein on we're closed on the, um, on new yea 2nd ofefore we're back the 2nd of january. we're back open and are open again, and people are brilliant. just brilliant. they just. they just want very want a chance. see, i'm very lucky.i want a chance. see, i'm very lucky. i have two tv shows on amazon worldwide, we amazon prime worldwide, so we have people come amazon prime worldwide, so we hajust people come amazon prime worldwide, so we hajust to people come amazon prime worldwide, so we hajust to see people come amazon prime worldwide, so we hajust to see the ople come amazon prime worldwide, so we hajust to see the restaurant,)me amazon prime worldwide, so we hathhe to see the restaurant,)me amazon prime worldwide, so we hathhe experience estaurant,)me amazon prime worldwide, so we hathhe experience estauran'ande get the experience of kerry and see very, see everything. so we're very, very know, very lucky if we say, you know, come night before , a come in the night before, a couple of after, people come in the night before, a cou delighted after, people come in the night before, a cou delighted come people come in the night before, a cou delighted come in.ople are delighted to come in. >> you >> that's brilliant. and you personally hungover personally will not be hungover tomorrow, then i'm assuming .

isabel monday to thursdays from 6:00 till 930. well come back. >> uh, i'm dawn neesom this is a gb news and i think coming up, we've got a treat for you. rishi sunak. good year message. new year message . happy new year, everyone. >> i hope you had a great
1:27 pm
christmas . we can look back on christmas. we can look back on a pretty momentous year. we've delivered record funding for the nhs and social care schools in england are surging up the global league table . we're global league table. we're getting the economy growing, we have cut inflation in half . have cut inflation in half. >> i'm sorry about that. the audio was a bit of a problem. there so, um, we're going to come back to that as soon as we can. i mean, i'm assuming you've both listened to the political new year's messages coming from rishi sunak and keir starmer this morning. what did you make of them, charlie? >> think they're >> yeah, i think they're interesting. they're interesting. i mean, they're both reason why i think both um, the reason why i think people so off in people are so turned off in politics because people are so turned off in polit may because people are so turned off in polit may not because people are so turned off in polit may not be because people are so turned off in polit may not be the ecause people are so turned off in polit may not be the best;e they may not be the best delivery deliverers of, you know , uh, down the camera sort of messages like this beaming into your to your home is wanting to get across , your priorities across your, your priorities for the but i'm sure the next year. but i'm sure they'll backed up with they'll be backed up with speeches very early in the new yeah is
1:28 pm
speeches very early in the new year. is all about year. but rishi's is all about reiterating sort five reiterating sort of the five priorities at priorities that he set out at the this, which is not the start of this, which is not exactly the start of this, which is not exactlhe really? all >> is he really? i mean, all right, inflation maybe, but there's a lot to do. >> there's progress. there's progress, he'll say, but he'll say year basically, say 2024 is the year basically, as minister as the prime minister you know he inflation. he has halved inflation. you know by know small boats are down by a third. those crossings, you know there nhs. there is investment in the nhs. taxes will down. we've taxes will come down. we've got the was the budget in march that was announced just a couple of weeks ago. positive announced just a couple of weeks ago. and positive ive announced just a couple of weeks ago. and positive spin that message and a positive spin that he'll take the he'll want to take to the country and country into 2024. and let's hope lands with the voters. hope it lands with the voters. >> but truth don't >> but the truth is, i don't think matter very think these messages matter very much well, don't think much at all. well, i don't think in day and age that we hold in this day and age that we hold our leaders in the esteem. that means when we look at these means that when we look at these videos, out at new videos, they put out at new yeah videos, they put out at new year, that we that we really give much weight to what they say. it's generic say. often it's quite generic comments. trying comments. it's kind of trying to get the they have get home the message they have in place, it'll in the first place, saying it'll be but don't be a good year, but i don't think listen to think people really listen to political maybe political leaders. like maybe they or two ago. >> i must confess, it wasn't first thing on mind this first thing on my mind this morning. god, i wonder what morning. oh god, i wonder what kieran going to kieran rish, are you going to say today? >> yeah, think, think >> yeah, i think, i think that's so there's been >> yeah, i think, i think that's so much there's been >> yeah, i think, i think that's
1:29 pm
so much politics there's been >> yeah, i think, i think that's so much politics there's lat n so much politics this year at a time just to time where people just want to get together with their families, want families, they want to have a good time. got year good time. they've got new year coming. that coming. the last thing that actually people probably want to do whatever do is tune to in whatever political to political leader they are to hear they've hear what the message they've got till got to say. they'll wait till the yeah. you know, it's >> yeah. you know, it's interesting that that rishi sunak downing sunak does his in downing street because he, he wants to get every before he's every last shot before he's kicked out downing street in kicked out of downing street in the new year. >> so you know you're still pessimistic. not hear pessimistic. did you not hear about there about the asparagus there earlier think veg was very earlier on? i think veg was very clear. it's true. >> early the asparagus said that clear. it's true. >> istarmer asparagus said that clear. it's true. >> istarmer won'tagus said that clear. it's true. >> istarmer won't be s said that clear. it's true. >> istarmer won't be leading|at keir starmer won't be leading labour into the election. well i say that's quite a leak isn't it. oh >> oh that dreadful . >> oh that was dreadful. >> oh that was dreadful. >> that was dreadful . >> that was dreadful. >> that was dreadful. >> start the car. shall we talk to. >> shall we talk to someone who knows what they're talking about with politics? shall we? uh, joining me now former joining me now is former conservative minister ann widdecombe . um, to look back at widdecombe. um, to look back at the and look forward and the year and look forward and lovely to see you. thank you very much joining this very much for joining us this afternoon. and um, if you could sum up the last year , 2023, this sum up the last year, 2023, this yeahin sum up the last year, 2023, this year, in one word, politically, what would it be? i know you
1:30 pm
don't swear, so i'm asking that. >> i think it's been pretty dreadful for both parties . it's dreadful for both parties. it's been pretty dreadful year for the world in general. uh, but here in the uk , i think both here in the uk, i think both parties have failed abysmally. both major parties . and when you both major parties. and when you look at their new year messages, the hilarious thing is that they're both saying the same thing . you know, they're going thing. you know, they're going to get of the cost of to get on top of the cost of living crisis they're going to solve . the nhs crisis. they're solve. the nhs crisis. they're going to solve crime. they're all saying the same thing. uh the difference is that rishi is there and can do things, but doesn't. uh, keir is there but doesn't. uh, keir is there but doesn't know what he wants to do because he changes his mind every minutes. so it's, um, every five minutes. so it's, um, you know, and i agree with what one of your, uh, panels said, which is people don't know, you know, hang on. the words of politicians , not even prime politicians, not even prime ministers in the way that they did say in the time of churchill or maybe even macmillan . um, and or maybe even macmillan. um, and certainly thatcher. uh, they
1:31 pm
don't, because , um, they don't don't, because, um, they don't actually expect anything to happen. it doesn't matter what anybody says. what people judge is what's happening, what's happening to my pay packet? can i get a doctor when i want one? what is happening, they ask. politicians never ask that. they just rattle on about what they want to happen. >> exactly. and obviously in the run election and as you run up to an election and as you know well, it's all promises, know so well, it's all promises, promises. but the devil is in the detail and we're very rarely given the detail of how anything is . is going to work. >> well, exactly. and and, you know, i mean, with keir starmer, he will give you detail. but then five minutes later when it's challenged, he changes his mind . uh, and it's challenged, he changes his mind. uh, and rishi will give you the detail and . the obvious you the detail and. the obvious response is, well, why haven't you done it then? uh, and he hasn't got answer to that. hasn't got an answer to that. and think is the year and i think this is the year 2024 when it is just possible, uh, that there could break uh, that there could be a break in of british politics in the mould of british politics and do at find in the mould of british politics
1:32 pm
andcourage do at find in the mould of british politics andcourage to do at find in the mould of british politics and courage to look at find in the mould of british politics andcourage to look away find in the mould of british politics andcourage to look away from the courage to look away from the courage to look away from the two major parties and look to, uh, smaller parties. um, now, you know , everybody's now, you know, everybody's talked about it. i'm old enough to remember the big alleged sea change when the sdp and the liberals joined forces, and they won a few by elections. but then that was it . won a few by elections. but then that was it. uh, and so it doesn't usually happen. it's got to happen sometime. it could just happen in 2024. if people find the courage to say what we've got isn't working, we're going to change. >> what interesting an because we did a gb news end of year poll and that, um, demonstrated that reform is now on 10% of the national vote, which is bad news for the tories . certainly for the tories. certainly >> oh, indeed. and there have been several polls now putting a reform at 10% and 1 or 2, even putting them above never mind a gb news poll. uh archewell . you gb news poll. uh archewell. you know, huge polling organisations have got exactly the same result as you've got. and i think
1:33 pm
people have got to take notice of that, but have also got to take confidence from it . it can take confidence from it. it can work. it needs a courage. i say to people, stop moaning and then doing exactly the same thing again . you know, it's the first again. you know, it's the first sign of madness . go on doing the sign of madness. go on doing the same thing , voting for the same same thing, voting for the same old parties. you seriously think it's going to get a different result? you won't. but if you vote for reform, you won't. >> so 2024 is the year the british political landscape changes forever. >> maybe , maybe, maybe i'm not >> maybe, maybe, maybe i'm not rash enough to say it will because i know that people like safety . yes, and in the end they safety. yes, and in the end they tend to go for safety. so i'm not going to make any rash predictions. but if people really this is the really want change, this is the year when i think they've got to face up to the fact that they can only get it one way, and that's differently. that's by voting differently. >> very >> brilliant. and thank you very much for joining us this afternoon very happy afternoon and a very, very happy new to you as well. hope new year to you as well. hope you have evening . and you have a lovely evening. and that's ann widdecombe there with a saying that the
1:34 pm
a crystal ball saying that the political system might be changing year. now changing in the new year. now let's what the news let's find out what the news headunes let's find out what the news headlines are with tatiana sanchez. >> dawn, thank you very much and good afternoon. this is the latest from the gb newsroom. look forward to 20 and 24 with pride and optimism . that's the pride and optimism. that's the message from the prime minister as britain prepares to celebrate the new year. rishi sunak promised a brighter future in his new year's message , with tax his new year's message, with tax cuts and a reduction in national insurance. he . described 2023 as insurance. he. described 2023 as a momentous year which saw inflation halved and record investment in the nhs . that's investment in the nhs. that's despite junior doctors in england planning their longest walkout in nhs history. next month . boris johnson's former month. boris johnson's former chief adviser says rishi sunak tried to strike what he called a secret deal in a bid to win the next election . dominic cummings next election. dominic cummings told the sunday times that he

was prepared to help the tories win if he was assured the most critical issues were prioritised . that reportedly includes nuclear weapons infrastructure, future pandemics and artificial intelligence . once the proposal intelligence. once the proposal was apparently rejected by the prime minister number 10 did not deny the report, but says mr cummings was not offered a position and the new year has arrived in australia. a sydney welcome 2024 with a spectacular fireworks display. on the famous harbour bridge in sydney, opera house were alight with colours and sparkle . with with colours and sparkle. with the spectacle erupting from landmarks and boats scattered throughout the water. earlier, the in auckland , new the sky tower in auckland, new zealand, in zealand, was illuminated in blazing colour as the country became one of the first time in the new year that beaten the new year that was beaten by the new year that was beaten by the pacific nation of kiribati, which entered the new year at

10:00 this morning . for more on 10:00 this morning. for more on all of those stories, you can visit our website at gbnews.com. now back to dawn . now back to dawn. >> thank you. tatiana. welcome back to gb news sunday with me, dawn neesom on your tv, online and on digital radio. now before the news we heard from former government minister and widikum are talking about her look back at the year , which wasn't very at the year, which wasn't very complimentary. was it an and getting a crystal ball out ? getting a crystal ball out? looking forward to 2024 politically. um charlie, i mean, you used to be an adviser to michael gove. what did you make of what anne had to say? >> thought i like a lot. >> yeah, i thought i like a lot. i think she talked a lot of sense as she usually always, always rolling >> and stop rolling your eyebrows , benjamin. eyebrows, benjamin. >> but it's about everybody in politics. it's less about telling people what they're going to do. it's about showing people what is going, what
1:37 pm
they're so you they're going to do. so you know, has inflation come down? yes, the pound being yes, it has. is the pound being felt people's pockets . we'll felt in people's pockets. we'll have see because of the have to see because of the cost of know, do people of living. you know, do people feel country's of living. you know, do people feel you country's of living. you know, do people feel you know, :ountry's of living. you know, do people feel you know, all1try's of living. you know, do people feel you know, all1trythese working. you know, all of these things something things is something that the government to government has to do to articulate country that articulate to the country that things getting better. and things are getting better. and we've we've said what we're going it going to do and we've done it now when it comes to other parties, anne was talking about, yes, drift , um, yes, there has been a drift, um, because people are as they not really switched on, they're looking parties. looking for alternative parties. so a situation so do you have a situation whereby , um, you have a set of whereby, um, you have a set of local elections you allow local elections where you allow people maybe have a bit people to maybe have a bit of a protest vote and then concentrate the minds of the pubuc concentrate the minds of the public look , the choice concentrate the minds of the plgoing look , the choice concentrate the minds of the plgoing to look , the choice concentrate the minds of the plgoing to be look , the choice concentrate the minds of the plgoing to be very, the choice concentrate the minds of the plgoing to be very, the clear; is going to be very, very clear at next election. it's at the next election. it's either going keir either going to be sir keir starmer the starmer or rishi sunak as the next minister voting for next prime minister voting for any just be any other party will just be a wasted vote. could let in wasted vote. or you could let in sir keir starmer through the back you're someone in back door. if you're someone in labour red seat who labour in a red wall seat who left party because left the labour party because labour left them, and you're worried about maybe his stance on the eu and reneging on brexit. don't put all that at risk by voting reform. you risk by voting for reform. you must stick with the tories to
1:38 pm
finish the job or get the job done. be huge done. so there'd be a huge communication that communication piece of work that needs the tories needs to be done by the tories to sure anybody that to make sure that anybody that is doubt about the is in any doubt about the tories, want tories, whether you want to vote for else, for reform or anyone else, that you with you should stay with the government you should stay with the govwell,3nt latest poll is not >> well, the latest poll is not good. was beating good. labour leader was beating rishi sunak in 309 constituents in england, wales and scotland on who would on the question of who would make prime minister make the best prime minister exactly . exactly. >> and actually, traditionally, that question it's that is the question where it's hardest leader of the hardest for the leader of the opposition ahead because opposition to be ahead because it's very difficult to like it's very difficult to look like a minister or a president a prime minister or a president because all because you have all the advantages of in office, advantages of being in office, like advantages of being in office, uke sunak. advantages of being in office, like sunak . one was done like rishi sunak. one was done from street. that's like rishi sunak. one was done fro make street. that's like rishi sunak. one was done fro make lookytreet. that's to make him look prime ministerial, like he should be there. we're entering a very there. but we're entering a very important political year. it's not just that there is going to be a general election. and rishi sunak had drinks with various journalists and hacks . confirmed journalists and hacks. confirmed that it will be this year. it could have been january 25th, but is general but he said this is the general election year and then in today's times it's today's sunday times it's reported that they've pencilled in the 14th of november as election day . now, emily

election day. now, emily thornberry she thinks it's thornberry said she thinks it's going to be in may because the may the 2nd or the other date this mentioned spring budget has been forward a little been brought forward a little bit think, 6th of bit to the, i think, 6th of march early march . march or something early march. and big and there's suggestions of big tax cuts like on inheritance tax coming there . but i think you're coming there. but i think you're going see a fraught year going to see a fraught year because . while the tories, i'm because. while the tories, i'm not even sure the tories know when the election are going to be for be because they're waiting for economic improve , for economic figures to improve, for inflation down, inflation to keep coming down, for fewer boats to come in. so i think they're i think they're sliding doors of exactly when they'll the fact is they'll decide. but the fact is that i think you're going to see endless , i endless quite furious, i suspect, mudslinging suspect, quite mudslinging political debate in this year. it's not going to be very pleasant, but it will be very entertaining. >> it's going to be interesting . >> it's going to be interesting. and the other wanted to and the other story i wanted to pick the sunday pick up on from the sunday papers dominic papers today is dominic cummings. sunak cummings. evidently rishi sunak has been having secret not that secrets in the papers, obviously. um, meetings with dominic the dominic cummings over the summer. going on here, charlie? >> well , they know each other, >> well, they know each other, as you'd expect. mean, they
1:40 pm
as you'd expect. i mean, they all worked in government together. all worked in government togethe a all worked in government togethea question mark how close always a question mark how close dom that dom was to rishi. and was that part plot to bring part of the whole plot to bring bofis part of the whole plot to bring boris down? do you think you were theorist? um no. were inspiracy theorist? um no. look, think that look, i don't think that there's, um, anything going on. i don't think i think you would be, uh, it would be mad. surely it would not be wise for the government if i was there to give dominic cummings a former role. think public would role. i think the public would not think that that's the right thing and that be thing to do. and that would be unwise, illegal. but, um , unwise, not illegal. but, um, but i think that would just be something that just wouldn't, wouldn't happen. i mean, look, the guy clearly very the guy is clearly very intelligent it comes to intelligent when it comes to things looking things like sort of looking at artificial intelligence, when it looks nuclear looks at things like nuclear power, when looks at things power, when it looks at things about national infrastructure, this something that was this is something that dom was very, passionate about, very, very passionate about, particularly in the cabinet office and trying to reorganise government to make it work to respond do we need respond to crises. do we need him right here, right now, in 2024? d0 him right here, right now, in 2024? do tories need him to 2024? do the tories need him to go win the general election? go and win the general election? i i think there i don't think so. i think there is plenty of talent, plenty of talent already in the tory party
1:41 pm
to see that through. >> i mean, i dominic >> i mean, look, i think dominic cummings has you know, more cummings has had you know, more comebacks this comebacks than madonna at this point. another point. he keeps fighting another day. i wouldn't be shocked if day. so i wouldn't be shocked if it if you look at this it happened. if you look at this rationally, you is rationally, you know he is a genius of political strategy . genius of political strategy. the way that he navigated the campaign to leave the eu, that he hit upon arguments that resonated with millions of people that had been ignored by some very clever people that you might call sort of establishment figures . totally missed might call sort of establishment figures. totally missed this caveat . you know, this big, this caveat. you know, this big, this chasm country . and then chasm in the country. and then he get boris johnson he managed to get boris johnson into with into downing street with a majority of 80, a huge majority, as learned the hard way. as we learned the hard way. it's quite boris quite something to make boris johnson presentable and johnson look presentable and competent . but johnson look presentable and competent. but dominic cummings johnson look presentable and com goodt . but dominic cummings johnson look presentable and com good enough)ominic cummings johnson look presentable and com good enough and nic cummings johnson look presentable and com good enough and the zummings johnson look presentable and com good enough and the threatngs was good enough and the threat he held over . was good enough and the threat he held over. dare he always held over. dare i speak of a colleague? the speak ill of a colleague? the threat held boris threat he always held over boris johnson was that i just want and he said this explicitly. he said i just wanted to get boris in there i wanted out there and then i wanted him out because he's useless. it was about having the of mps about having the number of mps to where, and to do the agenda where, lo and behold, dominic cummings
1:42 pm
behold, when dominic cummings left the downing street machine, my fell apart. and so i my god, it fell apart. and so i think if you're rishi sunak, nothing has gone right in any serious. >> you actually think he might be a good idea to have him back? >> if i were rishi >> i think if i were in rishi sunaks small shoes , i sunaks shoes, his small shoes, i would be small but expensive shoes that he wears to building small shoes with his sort of short trousers just above them. i would be saying i want dominic cummings back if i if i were in his position. >> it's perfectly >> i think it's perfectly acceptable to have a conversation obviously acceptable to have a conversatio all obviously acceptable to have a conversatio all the obviously acceptable to have a conversatio all the all iously acceptable to have a conversatio all the all the ly because of all the all the reasons. yeah. no, all the reasons. yeah. no, all the reasons that dom but, but, reasons that dom said. but, but, but would like but the only thing i would like in because you've been in person because you've been inside yes. and inside that machine. yes. and i had no, no qualms with dom at all. and was, know, very all. and he was, you know, very quiet at times, actually. you know, there was, i think, more of mystique of a there's always a mystique and around special and a mystery around special advisers the reality . he. yeah. >> um, how was his eyesight ? >> um, how was his eyesight? >> um, how was his eyesight? >> well, well, well, this is this is the other point. i mean, because he is a political because he is a genius political genius. and benjamin is absolutely right, which is why i think you can have a conversation with him. but the idea as presentation the idea as a presentation to the

pubuc public to say he's coming back, that all that just harks the country all the back those it the way back to those covid it does lockdown parties and does no lockdown parties and people will be even more fed up with government to think with this government to think that just the same old that it's just the same old faces, the same old machine, and they will maybe vote for change. if a public or if he had such a public or actual role. >> precedent for this >> there is precedent for this behaviour , of course, because behaviour, of course, because peter , probably the peter mandelson, probably the labour of dominic labour equivalent of dominic cummings, he was thrown out of cabinet twice for controversies, for sort of dodgy purchasing of houses and went off to the eu for years . and then in for many years. and then in quite the shock in what, 2009 was it? gordon brown picks up the phone to man he'd always the phone to a man he'd always loathed , in peter mandelson's loathed, in peter mandelson's words, and says, come words, and says, will you come back me navigate the back and help me navigate the way he was appointed as way through? he was appointed as deputy minister all of a deputy prime minister all of a sudden that was the effective role know, if role he held. so, you know, if rishi sunak is looking at how gordon brown managed to get a relatively good result after 13 years in power, then you would say that there's some value in bringing back the guy bringing back the bad guy because too just good to because they're too just good to not have. >> well, mean, miss the
1:44 pm
>> well, i mean, if you miss the first we have first part of the show, we have mystic veg on, um, which is asparagus. future asparagus. predicting the future , and it didn't predict dominic cummings in it. no, no, no mention of dominic there. so we wait see. you're watching wait and see. you're watching and to gb news sunday and listening to gb news sunday with me. dawn neesom lots more coming up in today's show. uh, new resolutions . why do new year's resolutions. why do we set them? and does anyone ever stick to i'll be ever stick to them? i'll be joined by a psychologist to explain what they can mean and how they can be bad for us as well. all of that and much more to come. watching to come. you're watching and listening britain's listening to gb news, britain's news far

1:49 pm
it's absolutely. flat calm. >> there is no wind at all. so most of the action in terms of wind storm is further south across the country. >> it's southern parts of wales and they're and southern england. they're going through going to get a buffeting through the and tonight. the rest of today and tonight. so i think some year so i think some new year celebrations be celebrations could well be affected, maybe even cancelled . affected, maybe even cancelled. >> if you are planning on going to one check the to one then check with the organisers as you say, organisers because as you say, gusts miles an hour, maybe gusts of 70 miles an hour, maybe even more than that possible in exposed through the rest exposed places through the rest of afternoon into the of the afternoon and into the night some heavy night as well, and some heavy rain too. >> um, and that is really the story through the next sort of. >> well, 18 hours or so. so southern areas getting buffeted by very strong winds . by very strong winds. >> yeah. >> yeah. >> with some trees down, just as you're there, um, with you're seeing there, um, with heavy rain too, whereas further north, winds now much lighter. >> so whereas northern areas have a lot of disruption , have had a lot of disruption, uh, from wind rain and snow uh, from wind and rain and snow over the last couple of days, it's the focus in the south now as we go through the rest of today and into tomorrow. so yeah, go on. >> john, john, tell us about
1:50 pm
this. um, and ipsis at the tornado and storm search organisation have warned that we are at threat of tornado as well. what's this one about? it's possible there were tornadoes. >> a couple of days ago in the greater manchester area, and the atmosphere is in the same sort of state, and it's very what we call unstable, very volatile low pressure sucks there up literally . and when you get air literally. and when you get air rising it can form little vortices like that. and there is the potential through the rest of this evening and overnight for some of those small tornadoes. but boy, very, very damaging tornadoes to whip up across parts of southern england. >> now in any one place and at any one time, uh, the chance of thatis any one time, uh, the chance of that is very, very small. >> but if you get hit by one, you know all about it, don't you? so is one watch you? so that is one to watch and into tomorrow morning as well . into tomorrow morning as well. you're going to be wondering, you know, when's it going to settle down. well, there aren't going to be some big changes over week and over the next week or, and
1:51 pm
actually time week actually by this time next week we'll talking about frost we'll be talking about frost and snow and ice. so you know, you pays your money, you takes your choice. do you prefer wind and rain and tornadoes or you rain and tornadoes or do you prefer, conditions . prefer, uh, blizzard conditions. so we're going to get potentially both over the next so we're going to get potentolly both over the next so we're going to get potento ten)oth over the next so we're going to get potento ten days, ver the next so we're going to get potento ten days, rightie next so we're going to get potento ten days, right now. it week to ten days, right now. >> brilliant. thank you very much. i'm entirely sure much. i'm not entirely sure you've much there, you've helped that much there, but, , thank very for but, um, thank you very much for joining us thank you. joining us today. thank you. right now in the movies , new right now in the movies, new year's eve is full of exciting , year's eve is full of exciting, sparkly outfits and surprise kisses at midnight. but in the real world, new year's eve means one thing the new year and all those resolutions , rules and those resolutions, rules and restrictions we put on ourselves . why do we do this? from giving up booze hitting the gym, up booze to hitting the gym, cutting our screen time, to swearing less often all at the same time? um, why do we start the new year with all these rules? it's the most miserable time of the year, in any case. and why we do when we can never stick any case, stick to them. in any case, let's find what's going on let's find out what's going on with these new year's resolutions talking to lucy
1:52 pm
resolutions by talking to lucy beresford . hello, lucy, beresford. hello, lucy, a broadcaster and psychotherapist. lucy, thank you so much for joining us this afternoon. and happy new year. do we put happy new year. why do we put ourselves through this? lucy >> well, it just seems like a very convenient watershed . very convenient watershed. >> it's the passing of one year and the start of another, and mentally it feels like a step in the in the right direction . the in the right direction. >> but as you say, the problem is we often put too much pressure on ourselves . pressure on ourselves. >> we make those resolutions far too big and far too undigestible. but at the same time, we need to give ourselves a bit of a push. >> we need to give ourselves a bit of motivation. so whether that's wanting to cut that's are you wanting to cut your smoking or you want to find the love of your life, this is the love of your life, this is the night where you have that resolve what we call intention , finality. >> it gives you that extra spur to say, right from tomorrow, my new life begins. >> but that is an awful lot of pressure. mental health wise, lucy, isn't it? and as you say,
1:53 pm
we set ourselves unrealistic tasks rather than sort of like i'm going to start jogging around the block. it's like i'm going to run a marathon by the end january . why are so end of january. why are we so hard on ourselves and you and me? >> both you and i ran a marathon last january in aid of prostate cancer , but we it. what cancer, but we did it. what a little bit every day . little bit every day. >> and i think that that's the perfect way to do it. >> it's a little bit like saying , i'm going to find the love of my friday, instead of my life by friday, instead of saying, i will go to on dating apps. i mean, the really interesting thing is that dating appsin interesting thing is that dating apps in particular will see a massive spike in people logging on and even on even sites like ashley madison, the married dating website people they will see people who've been reflecting on the maybe the year that's gone , or maybe the past that's gone, or maybe the past week where you've been sitting at home and your loved ones have ceased to be your loved ones. after that, extend time together. it's about recognising that you can make these tiny changes. you can have a really
1:54 pm
big goal and set your emotional gps if you like and say, i want to have, i want to change my career. i want to go travelling, but you still have to get in the car, you still have to switch the engine on, you still have to engage the clutch. it's little, tiny steps and also little detours that actually may be going to the gym isn't really going to the gym isn't really going to the gym isn't really going to do it for you, but actually finding a walking club or or going swimming might change it . that actually it's change it. that actually it's about finding the thing that will work for you as opposed to downloading all of these ideas that work for everybody else . that work for everybody else. >> but be gentle on yourself, i think, is the main advice. lucy is it , as think, is the main advice. lucy is it, as always, kindness and compassion? >> we're almost the last people that we give that to, and in a way , instead of maybe 2024 being way, instead of maybe 2024 being about what we can give up . maybe about what we can give up. maybe it's about the things that we take on board and being kinder it's about the things that we tanurselves'd and being kinder it's about the things that we tanurselves and d being kinder it's about the things that we tanurselves and to )eing kinder it's about the things that we tanurselves and to otherkinder to ourselves and to other people that be amazing start. that would be an amazing start. >> for >> lucy, thank you so much for joining very happy new

new year's plans now, um, young folk are not drinking and partying as much as some of us older folk used to. now used to aren't that young. if you don't mind me saying but what's mind me saying so. but what's going on here? why aren't people partying anymore? going on here? why aren't people partymean,(more? definitely >> i mean, there's definitely been a sea shift, know, for been a sea shift, you know, for a we've been told we a long time. we've been told we should be healthier. remember , should be healthier. i remember, you know, when i was a teenager, it was back in the new labour days was about it was back in the new labour days centre was about it was back in the new labour days centre binge was about it was back in the new labour days centre binge drinking. out it was back in the new labour days centre binge drinking. and, town centre binge drinking. and, you a of you know, it's still a bit of a problem , but it's definitely problem, but it's definitely nothing years nothing like it was 20 years ago. gen z, you ago. and i think this gen z, you know, the people under 25 have taken on a lot of the messages. but if you look at the figures and were talking about and you were just talking about bars clubs the bars closing 30% of clubs in the uk , nightclubs, that is, have uk, nightclubs, that is, have closed since 2020. now that's a huge proportion. and of course those places make their money largely off, particularly young people going out and having quite a few drinks. people going out and having quite a few drinks . and that's quite a few drinks. and that's just not the habit these days , just not the habit these days, actually, i think. >> go to donald now? >> can we go back to donald now? is back? donald are you there? >> so yeah . >> so yeah. >> so yeah. >> i'm here. yes, donald. >> i'm here. yes, donald. >> thank you. you're back. not sounding this time.
2:10 pm
sounding like a dalek this time. so you explaining so donald, you were explaining how tonight is for how important tonight is for your industry . your industry. >> yes. it's massively important . but as i said to you, i was trying to say the scotland's hospitality sector has been decimated. this past year. and in glasgow , particularly with in glasgow, particularly with the allies coming in, that has really had a massive effect on shoppers and clubbers alike, with a lot of people not coming into town because they can't get home or they can't even drive in. so it's been bad. so we're looking to hogmanay and looking forward to hogmanay and that next year, 2024, is . that that next year, 2024, is. a better year. but you know what? we do need is the hospitality sector needs help from the scottish government. and that's not forthcoming because not been forthcoming because again, denied a relief again, we were denied a relief package businesses in package which businesses in england got 75, which is kept helped keep many afloat . and in helped keep many afloat. and in scotland we did not get that. we have been denied the what we think it should be, rightly ours and by the scottish government. so it's not been helpful . um, so it's not been helpful. um, but you know, we've got to be
2:11 pm
hopeful in the new year is about being hopeful. and, uh , and, and being hopeful. and, uh, and, and looking forward to a better tomorrow. so i'm hopeful that things will change in the near future . but as i say, my clubs future. but as i say, my clubs have sold tonight. um, and have sold out tonight. um, and advance, which is fantastic. and ihope advance, which is fantastic. and i hope really right across scotland that the same applies as edinburgh of course is the home of hogmanay. it's a home of new year and you know, there's 40,000 revellers going to be hitting the streets tonight. but no fireworks. it's going to be a bit woke there. they won't let the fireworks off in edinburgh and uh, so tonight you have the common people turning up to see puip common people turning up to see pulp . and last night i was pulp. and last night i was a super trouper, uh, watching the abba tribute band bjorn again in the pouring rain. so there you go. oh but you're not having fireworks in edinburgh this year . no no , stop doing that. . no no no no, stop doing that. i don't know why . i mean, . no no no no, stop doing that. i don't know why. i mean, you say it's all this nonsense about the carbon emissions and
2:12 pm
everything else, you know, but i pick up on your point about animals. but you know, there's ways of keeping animals safe . ways of keeping animals safe. >> of course. no, absolutely . >> of course. no, absolutely. >> of course. no, absolutely. >> so there's no fireworks, you know , but the castle, which i know, but the castle, which i must admit last night we looked a castle. i looked at the way it was lit up. it looked spectacular . but there's nothing spectacular. but there's nothing like a big cascade of fireworks going over the top of it. when. absolutely. you know, when the bills come in. >> donald are leaving you with so much experience in the nightclub the partying nightclub and the partying industry . little advice industry. a little bit of advice for anyone watching and listening as to how to listening today as to how to handle big night tonight . handle the big night tonight. >> when you're going out, >> well, when you're going out, make sure you're, you know what you're drinking. know you're you're drinking. you know you're looking after your and looking after your drink and then friends looking then you have friends looking after come into after you when you come into licensed establishments such as the garage or cathouse, you will get after. please get looked after. but please help yourself. look after yourself because we can't help yourself because we can't help you . we can help point you in you. we can help point you in the way home. but just be
2:13 pm
careful. you know, it's all about having a good time. it's all about being safe and being protected when you're out and making sure you know what you drink. but hey, i was a young lad once , and, uh, i don't think lad once, and, uh, i don't think i paid much attention to that advice in my new years resolution is to see my cup half full, not fill with rum, whisky, gin or whatever. >> a man after my own heart. donald macleod, thank you so much for joining donald macleod, thank you so much forjoining us this much for joining us this afternoon. a very happy new year to you and yours. thank you . ha to you and yours. thank you. ha ha. yeah, it's water. honestly, it's not gin or vodka or it's just water. but we have , uh, just water. but we have, uh, yeah, i know it's not the most exciting thing, but, you know, we're trying be healthy . we exciting thing, but, you know, we though.) be healthy . we exciting thing, but, you know, we though.) b
2:14 pm
all alcohol. it is about all about alcohol. it is about saying goodbye to a year that hasn't been that good. let's be honest. we've had some horrible, horrible things happen this year and looking forward to the new yeah and looking forward to the new year. so benjamin, what what are your hopes for the new year? >> well, do you know what? i would turn that question around because i want to answer a different one now. it's just that oh right. >> okay, fine. show. ahead. >> going to say you made >> i was going to say you made a really point about how how really good point about how how you you don't have to you know, you don't have to sound you know, you don't have to souit's you know, you don't have to sou it's reflecting you know, you don't have to souit's reflecting and >> it's about reflecting and looking . and, you know, looking forward. and, you know, this year , my this time last year, my grandmother, who grandmother, the person who raised. had just been raised. yes had just been diagnosed tumour. diagnosed with a brain tumour. and i knew that she would have weeks, left. and so i weeks, maybe days left. and so i remember that 12 months on remember that 12 months ago, on this day , it felt like sort of this day, it felt like sort of the end of the world was coming because of the worst news imaginable. and so for me, when i was thinking about today , i was thinking about it today, i'm proud to have got i'm just so proud to have got through year. you know, it through this year. you know, it was first christmas and was the first christmas and festive period either of festive period without either of the raised me and the people who raised me and anyone who's lost their parents.
2:15 pm
and i know we have lots of older viewers, so it's probably, you know, lots of lots of people watching know, watching this. you know, there are months this are a couple of months of this year even remember year where i can't even remember them because you're so deep in shock moment. so for shock at that moment. and so for me, eve, this time me, new year's eve, this time marks something quite profound, which have coped with which is that to have coped with that, still feel happy and that, to still feel happy and confident and myself at the end of it, to and be going into a new year for the first time, um, you know, the first in you know, the first year in which of people that which neither of the people that raised over raised me will be watching over me the start of that year. me from the start of that year. that's means . and i that's what it means. and i think there are of think i think there are lots of people for which sort of people for which it's a sort of turning means turning of a corner that means a lot . lot. >> i think you're right. and that's such lovely and that's such a lovely story and well you getting well done you for getting through think we through it. and i think we do need remember, don't we, need to remember, don't we, charlie, it's you know, charlie, that it's you know, we're about partying charlie, that it's you know, we'rchampagne about partying charlie, that it's you know, we'rchampagne abofireworks,] charlie, that it's you know, we'rchampagne abofireworks, but and champagne and fireworks, but there is there are people out there is there are people out there who are suffering emotionally at the moment, and it's like going into a new year. is can be so overwhelming as especially as benjamin has alluded to, if you're bereaved. >> yeah. absolutely. right. and just as the interview that i had
2:16 pm
with broadcaster and with the broadcaster and psychologist it's psychologist earlier on, it's a kind of a reset moment where you can sort of, know, go into a can sort of, you know, go into a new that can sort of, you know, go into a new difficult that can sort of, you know, go into a new difficult period that can sort of, you know, go into a new difficult period of that can sort of, you know, go into a new difficult period of time. was a difficult period of time. but going into january and it's not just as we talked about before, it's not being too hard on doing little things before, it's not being too hard oneither doing little things before, it's not being too hard on either enhance little things before, it's not being too hard on either enhance yourself ngs before, it's not being too hard on either enhance yourself ors to either enhance yourself or progress or do something that you want to do a new hobby, a new skill, not on new skill, not take on the world. not all of the world. not take on all of the problems be all things to problems and be all things to all people, all of the time. just do small things to help you and love yourself, also be and love yourself, but also be kinder generous to kinder and more generous to other those small other people. it's those small steps think you steps that i think help you get through year through into a new year to become a person, just become a better person, and just to if people gone to see if people have gone through time, through a difficult time, just how be and what how great life can be and what positives how great life can be and what posiyou; how great life can be and what posiyou you have to go get but you you have to go and get them. but don't put too much pressure yourself be pressure on yourself and just be the that you can possibly be. >> yeah, no, i think you're right. i think certainly right. and i think in certainly in and think it's in this country and i think it's getting to me getting worse, it feels to me like we're getting worse. we beat much on beat ourselves up so much on everything . i mean, you know, everything. i mean, you know, the country is great. the country is not great. politics are rubbish. you know, the rubbish, the weather's rubbish, everything's rubbish. and i did so bad, horrible things
2:17 pm
so many bad, horrible things that shouldn't right that i shouldn't have done right . than. that i shouldn't have done right . yeahthan. that i shouldn't have done right . yeah ,1an. that i shouldn't have done right . yeah , but that's another story. >> that's a post—watershed post. watershed show that one. but but rather than celebrating the good now i'm going to look at you on this one, charlie, because you are, um, you know, a government adviser. the government don't help. never seem to be help. they're never seem to be that optimistic or positive about things. i mean, they try, but doesn't really seem to but it doesn't really seem to come across. i think that's absolutely right, actually, because i think, look, it's been, um, we've seen more politics, i think, in the last decade than might have decade than what we might have seen decade than what we might have see now, know everybody decade than what we might have see more know everybody decade than what we might have see more know ministers, more decade than what we might have see msecretaries, iinisters, more decade than what we might have see msecretaries, more rs, more home secretaries, more everything. exactly. home secretaries, more everyth i lg. exactly. home secretaries, more everythi think exactly. home secretaries, more everythi think when exactly. home secretaries, more everythi think when axactgo and so i think when you go through such, um , uh, draining through such, um, uh, draining times of sort of having since 2010, you know, a coalition that we had one year of a tory sort of, uh, majority before there was four years of infighting about brexit, which sucked out the energy , i think, of the the energy, i think, of the country. then a new prime minister >> you mentioned the b—word. oh, my b—word. >> oh, and then and then, you know, covid came.
2:18 pm
know, covid obviously came. so there much that has there has been so much that has gone this country that gone on in this country that has sucked and in sucked out so much energy and in politics, but in people's day to day lives, i think that's why people are generally more. people are generally just more. they to see things they just want to see things working and some, some working again. and some, some of that time. but i think that will take time. but i think there be a shift change there has to be a shift change also in of just not also in terms of just not relying the state so much and relying on the state so much and what are we what politicians are doing, we now at now need to look at what actually we do help actually we can do to help ourselves, what contribution we actually we can do to help oursmake what contribution we actually we can do to help oursmake t01at contribution we actually we can do to help oursmake to our:ontribution we actually we can do to help oursmake to our communities'e actually we can do to help oursmake to our communities , how can make to our communities, how can make to our communities, how can ourselves feel can we make ourselves feel better, be as best as better, how can we be as best as we be? doesn't we possibly can be? that doesn't actually rely on actually have to rely on government telling us government sort of telling us what or what think. what to do or what they think. >> yeah, personal >> exactly. yeah, personal responsibility . and i think the responsibility. and i think the one thinking, one thing that i was thinking, watching fireworks sydney watching the fireworks in sydney and donald and then talking to donald mcleod up in, in scotland , where mcleod up in, in scotland, where the fireworks have been cancelled and, and sydney are just doing this massive, brilliant display everyone's brilliant display and everyone's getting behind it and it's wonderful and it's and are . wonderful and it's and why are. we be so blue rather than celebrating some of the good stuff that's great about this country and there is good stuff.
2:19 pm
come on. >> i think we have become terribly negative. there terribly negative. yes there have arguments. have been so many arguments. you mentioned brexit. there was a scottish referendum. mentioned brexit. there was a scottish re'he*ndum. mentioned brexit. there was a scottish re'he mentioned brexit, >> i think he mentioned brexit, not word. >> i think he mentioned brexit, not then word. >> i think he mentioned brexit, not then we word. >> i think he mentioned brexit, not then we obviouslyyrd. >> i think he mentioned brexit, not then we obviously have >> and then we obviously have these lot these sort of, you know, a lot more cultural debates more sort of cultural debates than maybe we've had as a country and country in a long time. and i think there's just a tendency to rip each other rip pieces out of each other rather proud what rather than be proud of what we've and we've got in common. and actually, dare i say it , i we've got in common. and actually, dare i say it, i love britain, you know, i think it's got so much. >> nothing wrong with that. it's almost like you have to apologise now. almost like you have to apoyeah.* now. >> yeah. >> yeah. >> always when i tell >> i'm always proud when i tell people british or a londoner >> i'm always proud when i tell peoplgo british or a londoner >> i'm always proud when i tell peoplgo iholidayr a londoner >> i'm always proud when i tell peoplgo iholidayr a lcyou ner and i go on holiday and, you know, new year's know, maybe that's a new year's resolution that we all resolution that we should all share, take bit share, which is to take a bit more satisfaction pride in more satisfaction and pride in being british. >> there far countries being british. >aren't'e far countries being british. >aren't there?ar countries , aren't there? >> like rwanda . >> there are, like rwanda. >> there are, like rwanda. >> but remind us, we are a great country, but we're a great country, but we're a great country because the people within it and it's what the people necessarily the people do, not necessarily the politicians all time. people do, not necessarily the poland,1s all time. people do, not necessarily the poland, you l time. people do, not necessarily the poland, you know, ime. people do, not necessarily the poland, you know, we've got, >> and, you know, we've got, you know, those media, we've got the best universities, the best universities, we've got the best, best universities, we've got the bestknow, channel, you you know, this channel, you know, universities . you know, best universities. you know, best universities. you know, much going know, we've got so much going for don't for us that we just don't shout about it enough. >> but do think a lot of
2:20 pm
>> but i do think a lot of people would quite like the relief you know, relief because, you know, on a sort of vaguely note, sort of vaguely serious note, things cost things like inflation and cost of really of living and all that really have been exhausting, you know? but have. but they have. >> go, oh my god, >> but people go, oh my god, it's government, the it's all the government, the politicians. well, not just the government, the politicians fault, had the fault, but we have had the pandemic. we have had war pandemic. yeah we have had war in ukraine. we've had lots of things that we weren't expecting to go and our politics has to go on, and our politics has changed so much, not just because of america the sort changed so much, not just bethe;e of america the sort changed so much, not just bethe trumpnerica the sort changed so much, not just bethe trump sort:a the sort changed so much, not just bethe trump sort of, the sort changed so much, not just bethe trump sort of, tknow,t of the trump sort of, you know, things more things that are becoming more black white social media black and white social media people becoming very people are it's becoming very divisive society. people are it's becoming very diviyou're society. people are it's becoming very diviyou're eitheriety. people are it's becoming very diviyou're eitherietjthis >> you're either in this category or that very particular view. you're either woke or you're not, you know, just the way of think, way in which we sort of i think, you ourselves you know, allow ourselves to frame in frame the arguments in particular ways allowed particular ways has allowed a sort of a more depressing view to sort of take over when you know what charleton are. great. >> you what, charlie? >> you know what, charlie? the fact we can't even have fact that we can't even have a conversation now without people screaming one another, screaming abuse at one another, i will stop. >> that's my resolution. >> that's my resolution. >> yeah, stop screaming >> yeah, yeah, stop screaming abuse not. abuse at me, benjamin. it's not. it's bit . but it's starting to wear a bit. but let's read of lovely let's read some of your lovely emails about out. see
