3:07 pm
that kit was released on monday night. now, nike has sparked a huge storm after replacing the red cloths on a white background. the design, as you can see on your screens now as purple and blue horizontal stripes in what nike called a playful update of the shirt ahead of the european championships this year. now, in the last hour, the football association has stood by the shirt and earlier rishi sunak waded into the row and criticised the design. >> obviously i prefer the original and my general view is that when it comes to our national flags, we shouldn't mess with them because they're a source of pride, identity, who we are and they're perfect as they are . they are. >> well, from the prime minister to the punters in pubs, everybody's got to take on this and let's now get the views of my fellow gb news presenter and the eminent historian neil oliver. neil oliver last time i checked, you weren't a proud englishman, you do have englishman, but you do have a fundamentally sacred fundamentally grasp the sacred sand city of flags. tell us why
3:08 pm
you think people have reacted so vociferously to this desecration i >> -- >> hi, lam >> hi, martin. >> hi, martin. >> yeah, symbols matter . >> yeah, symbols matter. >> yeah, symbols matter. >> flags matter. >> flags matter. >> most people are encouraged from childhood to invest something in that, in that symbol of national identity. and it does the, the, the english that flag, it means something. you know, it's the cross of saint george. >> it has a history. it has a it has a story behind it, and people care deeply about it. >> i would say more than anything else, it's hard to imagine, nike or anyone else playing or being playful with anybody else's flag. there does seem to be something about the engush seem to be something about the english flag and the george cross, which seems to make it a target . it's hard to cross, which seems to make it a target. it's hard to imagine anybody doing similar with the stars stripes , or look stars and stripes, or look at how passionate were about how passionate people were about the ukrainian flag and, and still are, and i think that it's, it's encouraging more than anything else. it's trying to nudge people into somehow accepting that there identity
3:09 pm
doesn't matter, that everything's fluid. that you know, that you can that you can change anything you can, that you can take anything away. and if you have any kind of issue with that, you're some kind of well, at the very least, you're a stick in the mud. this a stick in the mud. and in this context, knows context, heaven only knows they'll portray it as somehow being right , to have a being far right, to have a passionate connection to standing up for the identity thatis standing up for the identity that is symbolised by that, by that is symbolised by that, by that flag. >> i think that's bang on, neil, because everybody is irish on saint patrick's day. every other form of british nationalism is celebrated, but there's something singularly , i don't something singularly, i don't know, unpleasant or unsavoury about english nationalism. and i think, neil, we can both agree it's become shorthand for racism. yeah. >> and i, i don't get it. you rightly point out i'm, you know, born and raised as a scot in scotland, but i, i, i celebrate the english identity. i absolutely empathise with why a proud englishman or english woman would say that they were
3:10 pm
proud to be an englishman or engush proud to be an englishman or english woman, in the same way that i would feel that about someone who was proud of their irish their welsh irish heritage, their welsh heritage, scottish heritage, their their scottish heritage. it's not heritage. you know, it's not it's something slight. it's it's not something slight. it's something in people something that in which people invest if i was to invest a great deal. if i was to sort of playfully change the spelling of your or spelling of your name, or to change name, know, to change your name, you know, to insist that i might just as well call you mike dobney, you would say. but but martin is who i am. and by and it's how people recognise me and they can identify that i am martin daubney. but i say again , there daubney. but i say again, there is something there is something very strange about the way englishness and in this instance, the english flag is specifically targeted. i don't think nike or anyone else would have the temerity to be playful about other people's national identity. in the way that they think, oh, well, you know, we can do this because if anyone gets up on their hind legs to protest, they will just be able to characterise them as being in
3:11 pm
some way nationalistic in a negative sense. right wing extremists, some thing about england and englishness. and i, i'm as as happy to support englishness as any of the other nationalities in this archipelago. >> superb , sir. thank you, neil >> superb, sir. thank you, neil oliver, always a pleasure to speak to you. and of course, tune in to neil oliver's show both news and online. this both on gb news and online. this weekend. top thank you. weekend. top man. thank you. now, back in 2014, labour mp emily thornberry resigned from the party's front bench. if you recall, after sending a tweet of a house covered in england flags at the time , the photo was at the time, the photo was branded snobby. so what does she think of this latest controversy ? >> 7. >>i ? >> i think 7— >> i think it's em ? >> i think it's all very odd. i mean, if you look at it, what have nike done? i mean, seriously, you could hardly recognise it as the england flag, can you? i mean, england flag, can you? i mean, england flag is a simple white background and a red cross seems to me. why can't they just leave it alone? imagine how crossed the french would get if they started putting bits of purple on the tricolour . or. or they
3:12 pm
on the tricolour. or. or they changed welsh took away changed the welsh flag took away the dragon and stuck a pussycat on instead. i mean, people will be up in arms, you know, i think i think he's right. i think, why can't we just have as just a straight england flag on the back of these shirts? >> yeah, but to be fair, you're not a particular fan of the saint george's cross, are you? what do you mean? well, i mean, you had you. took the you had to. you. you took the mickey of someone flying the mickey out of someone flying the england flag and had to resign as result of it. as a result of it. >> are you talking about a photo itook >> are you talking about a photo i took ten years ago? yes. and? and i put on twitter. yeah. no i took a photo ten years ago of a house that was completely covered in england flags. is that what you mean? yeah. and people made all sorts of assumptions about it. all right. okay. sorry. i'm so far beyond, like, kind of trying to sort of explain know, it was a explain you know, it was a photograph, you know, and, and other people have decided what it i was thinking or it was that i was thinking or saying. you know, i mean, as i say, it was a very long time ago, but i did, you know, far
3:13 pm
ago, but i did, you know, as far as concerned, it was going as i was concerned, it was going to damage to the labour to do any damage to the labour party. do you know what i did? i resigned. you remember when resigned. do you remember when people that? when people used to do that? when they a mistake? we haven't they made a mistake? we haven't had haven't seen that forever. i think this lot, you know, think from this lot, you know, they don't resigning do they. they don't do resigning do they. >> thornberry >> wow. emily thornberry has changed saint changed the tune on the saint george's it's almost like george's flag. it's almost like there's election in there's a general election in there's a general election in the air now. one's played the air now. no one's played more england. and of more games for england. and of course, nottingham forest than more games for england. and of cours
3:14 pm
i'm, i'm against it. i think it's wrong . it's wrong. >> and shields are a safe pair of hands as ever. now, our national reporter, theo chikomba , is outside nike's flagship store in central london. theo, you're talking to punters as they go in and out. what's the reaction on the street to this playful makeover ? playful makeover? >> well, certainly it's been a mixed review from many people we've been speaking here. nighttown is busy as ever, but on the eve of the england and brazil match, many people are getting ready and some others who are going to the game next week against belgium have been buying their shirts here today. but this afternoon we've heard from the ea. the football association, the governing body here in england , and they defend here in england, and they defend this new design and they've gone on to say it's a new england kit, saying it's not the first time different colours have been used and the body also says it means a lot to our fans and that
3:15 pm
the latest design was a tribute to the 1966 world cup winning team. but of course, lots of people have been saying was there really any need for it to be changed? this is what people have been telling us here in central london. >> england is england. you know, you start changing its colours, you start changing its colours, you start changing the flags. yeah. it represents something that's traditional and perhaps it stay that way . it should stay that way. >> being welsh, i'm not really bothered. it's to be honest . but bothered. it's to be honest. but england's england, so it should be the original saint george's cross. >> i think it could have been better . i >> i think it could have been better. i think >> i think it could have been better . i think the old shirts better. i think the old shirts like retro. i think they could have made them more like them because i think they're quite good they're the best. good shirts. they're the best. >> why change it? why change it? it's a part of england, isn't it? so i don't know quite why they're changing it all of a sudden. >> well, it's fair to say that the, the shirt isn't cheap. £124.99 and for young people,
3:16 pm
£64.99. but this row has been going on today and people are saying, well, actually it should stay as it is. it's hugely important to lots of football fans up and down the country. but interestingly though, today we've heard politicians from both sides defending the old design, they're simply saying, well, it shouldn't have been messed around with. >> thank you. theo chikomba live at nike town. now we're running at nike town. now we're running a poll on the gb news website asking a very simple question. do you think the england flag should be on the england football shirt and not this new variant, playful as they call it? well, the poll closes at 5:30 and i'll bring you the results before the end of the show. now we will of course have lots more on that story throughout the show, and i'm hoping to bring you the thoughts of johan eriksen, the of fan johan eriksen, the legend, a little later on, former england manager, of course, plenty of course, and there's plenty of coverage on our website, gbnews.com. you've helped gbnews.com. and you've helped to make it fastest growing

4:25 pm
welcome back. it's 425 on this friday afternoon. i'm martin daubney, and this is gb news. now, later this hour, i'll speak about claims from a jewish man. but his nine year old nephew was not given proper care by pro—palestine nurses . he's now, pro—palestine nurses. he's now, as we all know, rishi sunak has promised repeatedly to stop the boats. so how is it all going? well, an incredible 838 illegal migrants arrive in just four days this week, and the surge in illegal arrivals caused the government to announce a migrant emergency in the channel. well, i'm joined now by our homeland security adviser, mark white. mark always a pleasure to have you on the show. a migrant emergency, one that's going to take over four weeks to solve. it's fair to say, mark, it's
4:26 pm
been utterly disastrous week for the government . the government. >> yeah, it's a strange one in that the government yesterday decided to declare this a migrant emergency. but then at the same time told us that it would be the 18th of april before this, rwanda bill received royal assent. they do have time available to them before then, but for some reason, despite this being an emergency, we're waiting until the 18th of april and then it's going to be, we're told, at least june before any flights to rwanda take off. we had reports in the times this morning suggesting that the government has yet to finalise any kind of a deal with an aviation company who would be prepared to take those asylum seekers across to rwanda. in response, we have had a statement from the home office today saying that we have robust operational plans in place for
4:27 pm
flights following discussions with a range of commercial companies , and they go on to say companies, and they go on to say that they are all departments working across whitehall towards ensuring that these flights leave for rwanda as soon as possible. i think really, in that statement, there is nothing that statement, there is nothing that knocks down the times story. no confirmation that they actually have come up with a deal to be able to fly these asylum seekers to the east african country. and in the absence of that, we understand that there are discussions to try to persuade the raf to pick up the slack here. now, understandably, the royal air force just doesn't want to get involved with this controversial process , and not just because process, and not just because it's controversial and potentially a security risk. they don't have the aircraft available to do this. it would be likely the voyager aircraft that they have, which can be used as a passenger aircraft, but it also doubles as a tanker
4:28 pm
aircraft and it's used to support the fast jet fleet . and support the fast jet fleet. and what's been happening in recent months, will they have been involved in supporting the fast jet fleet out of cyprus to bomb the houthi rebels? they really don't have the capacity available to them in the raf to start using these aircraft as a shuttle service for asylum seekers going off to rwanda , and seekers going off to rwanda, and it's almost a metaphor for the incompetence of what this this scheme has become. >> mark the mod don't want to get involved and private charter companies don't want to get involved either, for fear of reputational damage. and yet, none of this mark seems to have been thought through. what kind of immigration plan , deportation of immigration plan, deportation plan that involves planes involves a government that hasn't managed to get any planes lined up . lined up. >> well, as yet, it doesn't seem that they have got that agreement in place. but they are
4:29 pm
confident, they say that they will have the plans in place when it comes to the time that they have to start moving these asylum seekers to rwanda, and all the time, more people are coming across the channel making these illegal voyages across from france. and as you said in your introduction there, 838 just since tuesday, 61 on tuesday when the weather conditions improved to the point they were borderline. so we got about, 61 across on on tuesday. on wednesday it was flat calm. and that's when we saw 514 of these people make that illegal voyage. and then yesterday again, when the weather conditions were starting to deteriorate, once more, 263 people made that journey across from france in small boats and what do we have today? we have bad weather in the channel today , and as a result, no boats
4:30 pm
coming across. , and as a result, no boats coming across . every , and as a result, no boats coming across. every time we hear from the government, we hear from the government, we hear that the stop the boats plan is what's responsible for this. 36% reduction in small boats coming across the english channel boats coming across the english channel, compared to the year before. what? actually, every time we get an improvement in the weather, we see a surge coming across the english channel. regardless of what they stop. the boats plan is that the government has enacted . government has enacted. >> and yeah, mark white, we're both smiling away. i think it's one of those situations now where we either laugh or we cry. mark white, thank you very much for joining us on the show. sometimes it might seem the best option. it'sjust sometimes it might seem the best option. it's just it's just for them to do a rain dance on the top of the white cliffs of dover because as we said yesterday on the show, chris hope we got that that message out that they were cheering in the 1922 committee because they were told they could have an early cut for the weekend. number 10 contacted us
4:31 pm
directly and that wasn't the case. they were cheering because it's been royal assent, it's been given royal assent, this bill. but not until this rwanda bill. but not until april the 18th. what kind of emergency takes a month to solve? if that was an emergency leak, the government would be up to their necks in water. perhaps an ample metaphor now. there's lots more still to come between now and 5:00. a children's hospital in manchester is investigating claims that a child was treated poorly by his staff because he was jewish and the nurses were pro—palestinian . the nurses were pro—palestinian. an astonishing story. but first, here's your latest news headunes here's your latest news headlines with tatiana sanchez . headlines with tatiana sanchez. >> martin, thank you very much. the top stories from the gp newsroom. the football association is standing by the redesign of the new england kit. despite criticism from the prime minister. nike says the redesign of the saint george's cross, changing the colours to blue and purple , was a playful update purple, was a playful update ahead of the euro 2024

personal debts, the fact that retail sales are flat means that the bank of england will be less worried about consumer spending, juicing up the economy and causing inflation, so it makes them slightly more likely to raise to lower rates. excuse me? sooner rather than later. look, we've had so much economic data this week , it's worth you and this week, it's worth you and i just taking stock as we go into the weekend. we had that inflation number, didn't we, on on wednesday when inflation fell from 4% during the year to january to 3.4% during the year, to february, that's a very chunky reduction in inflation. of course, prices are still going up , but of course, prices are still going up, but they're going up by less. and within that inflation number, some prices are actually going down at least on an annual basis. if you look at petrol and diesel, petrol dunng at petrol and diesel, petrol during february 2024, martin was about 4% cheaper than in february 2023, and diesel was

about 11% cheaper. so in the last couple of weeks , both last couple of weeks, both petrol and diesel prices have started to tick up again. they are still lower than they were february last year, so we've had that low inflation number. but then the bank of england did hold interest rates yesterday at 5.25. that's a 16 year high. they've been at 5.25% since last august . and the fact that retail august. and the fact that retail sales are flat means that the bank of england now is more likely to lower interest rates soonen likely to lower interest rates sooner, but i still don't think they're going to lower interest rates till june at the earliest. i thought it would have been earlier, but when i saw that the mpc voted yesterday 8 to 1 to keep rates on hold, that's real. stuck in the mud. overcautiousness. i thought it'd be 6 to 3 or even 5 to overcautiousness. i thought it'd be6to3oreven5to4to overcautiousness. i thought it'd be 6 to 3 or even 5 to 4 to hold rates. so on a knife edge, just one person would have to switch for the next monthly meeting, or they're most months, to actually
4:41 pm
recommend and implement an interest rate cut . but it's not interest rate cut. but it's not to be. the bank of england is being very, very cautious. they were slow to spot inflation coming in 2021. very, very slow. and now they want to prove how tough they are on inflation by being slow to slow to actually lower rates, imposing more economic damage on the economy than needs be. but you know, i it won't surprise you to hear me say that, martin. i've been i've been maybe suggesting politely that the bank of england has been making the wrong decisions for some time now. >> liam, i always like to pick your brains on a positive and instructive note. and we're seeing downward grind on high seeing a downward grind on high streets. so many people watching this show will see their local high street withering away. and this migration into online shopping seems to be a one way street. liam, what can be done ? street. liam, what can be done? what would you do? what should we do to help the beleaguered high street? we're coming for a
4:42 pm
general election. there's a lot of votes in this, surely. >> it's a great question, martin. and you when we martin. and you know, when we set up gb news back in 2021, the future of the high street was a mate, you know, along with small businesses, these major businesses, these were major themes we wanted to tackle. themes that we wanted to tackle. so what i would do to revitalise high streets is i would have a complete change of the regime of what we call business rates. business rates are taxes that businesses have to pay before they've taken in any money at all, let alone made any profit. so even if you make a loss, even if you have no revenue, you still must pay these taxes and their taxes on the rateable value of your premises. whether you rent the premises or whether you rent the premises or whether you own the premises, you have to pay a tax that reflects the value of that premises on top of your rent. if you pay rent and business rates raise a lot of money, they raise about £30 billion a year. so the
4:43 pm
government, the incoming labour government, the incoming labour government, the incoming labour government, the surviving tory government, the surviving tory government, whatever it is, would have to be careful how it reformed business rates. but it can't be right. it cannot be right that bricks and mortar companies have to pay this tax through the nose, whereas online companies don't have to pay this tax. all right. they pay the tax on their warehouses, but it's nothing compared to the tax that a retail unit would pay. and it's really those business rates which are hammering high streets because they're just making a lot of shops unviable. that plus i would if i was rishi sunak, i would i would make it my business. i would make it one of my missions in life to make sure that people can park in town. so get rid of all these horrible parking apps that particularly the elderly can't use people without smartphones, you know, £0.50 or a pound coin, you know, in a metre to park or whatever it is. not these or even a bank
4:44 pm
card that you can tap these parking apps. i mean, i know from my own market town where i live, the amount of particularly older people who complain about parking apps. it makes it really that's also hollowing out the high street. so i think it's a combination of clamping down on on business rates, which have got out of control, maybe some kind of levy on the online retailing giants to replace that business tax because a lot of them don't pay much tax in the uk. they've structured their massive companies and lobbied governments and by the way, employed loads of government advisers as they come out of government a kind you government in a kind of, you know, inverse , well, i won't say know, inverse, well, i won't say the word, but it certainly looks a bit unsavoury that so many government advisers jobs government advisers get jobs with the big tech giants when they leave government. and yet when they're government, they when they're in government, they somehow manage to get somehow don't manage to get around regulating them in around to regulating them in a way that people who like way that even people who like free like you and me, free markets, like you and me, would recognise need to be would recognise they need to be regulated, their enormous regulated, given their enormous market i do think we
4:45 pm
market power. so i do think we need to help revitalise our high streets. i do think it's about incentives, incentives, helping physical bricks and mortar shops, incentives to tax online shops, incentives to tax online shops in order to help physical bncks shops in order to help physical bricks and mortar shops because our high streets, they're not just places where you go to buy your shopping. they're places where you meet and greet, where communities look after and look out for each other, that's the case in many of our small in our cities , and particularly our cities, and particularly our towns, where most people live . towns, where most people live. it's a part of policy which i think the tories have completely, underperformed . and, completely, underperformed. and, labour talk a good game about the high street . we'll see what the high street. we'll see what happens because you and i know martin, these are the kind of things that really, really matter to gb news viewers and listeners. this sense of place, this sense of local community. it's what makes people happy and what will make our what makes
4:46 pm
our country coherent. and it strikes taxation strikes me that our taxation policies in recent years have done very little in order to strengthen our lovely, vital high streets , and they've done high streets, and they've done a lot to weaken them. >> liam halligan i say every time, i say every week, if we have people like you in charge, we'd have a fighting chance, my friend. it's always a pleasure to have you on the show. thank you. now, a children's hospital in manchester is under fire after allegations staff treated after allegations staff treated a child because he was a child poorly because he was jewish. i'm martin daubney on gb news, britain's news channel

4:53 pm
inappropriate, badges or being brought into work environments, i just it obviously it's funny because people this whole microaggression that became that time became very popular over the last few years, but that it it's like, oh , microaggressions it's like, oh, microaggressions towards other ethnicities. we all have to be really careful about. but but aggression some people who see the palestinian flag, jews who have i know relatives who, not my relatives, but friends of mine whose relatives are kidnapped at the moment, who were murdered on october 7th. that flag does not bnng october 7th. that flag does not bring up positive associations for them. but of course, they're jewish, so it doesn't matter. >> okay. howie, it's worth >> okay. josh howie, it's worth pointing out the firebomb incident in hackney. that's an alleged anti—semitic incident. i think the police are still investigating. that's a live case. so let's be delicate there. and i think andy burnham has passed a comment. he said that there is an investigation underway into this, but

liberal democrats get involved, saying that it does seem, a bit odd to change the colours of a nation's flag. didn't quite mention england , but they've got mention england, but they've got they've point of they've got the point even of course own course reform uk, our own colleague here from from gb news, wearing his news, lee anderson wearing his replica shirt i think 2006, the red shirt. so everyone's piling in because it's easier to talk about this, which doesn't really matter than the small boats crisis and the lack of action by this government. yeah. >> lee anderson called it namby pamby nonsense. you'd pamby woke nonsense. as you'd expect . and is it strange how expect. and is it strange how the liberal democrats, who their national to be the national flag seems to be the blue gold stars on? blue flag with gold stars on? anyhow, i digress, because, look, let's talk now about, the latest cracking episode of chopper's political podcast. you've got geoffrey cox on there got to be sad talking apocalyptic lee. yeah. the tory future and the hopes that the election he's respected as former attorney general sir geoffrey cox, he says if you look at the recent polling, survation forecasting a 200 seat majority for the labour party, that's 1997 levels, he and
5:27 pm
geoffrey cox says you are. >> that is bad for democracy. no party has a right, a right to be, to be, to be there in government. he calling for a vision from the prime minister and from other cabinet ministers. and he also says, interestingly , that were at that interestingly, that were at that big the tory party wouldn't be able to form a front bench to oppose labour. and then something's happened , which something's happened, which tories are all for a while. for example, in the past, human rights act, devolution and the like. what he had to rights act, devolution and the like to what he had to rights act, devolution and the like to me what he had to rights act, devolution and the like to me on what he had to rights act, devolution and the like to me on my hat he had to rights act, devolution and the like to me on my podcast.id to say to me on my podcast. >> can't afford that of >> you can't afford that kind of selfish indulgence. you know, the conservative party represents cluster of represents a cluster of important values, ideals and principles which, if the country is without its , is a very is without its, is a very dangerous thing for democracy. i mean, at the moment, a 200 seat majority, 80 seat majority is big. but the proposal at the moment , the suggestion that moment, the suggestion that labour might win a 200 seat majority, effectively annihilates any credible opposition . that's bad for
5:28 pm
opposition. that's bad for democracy, but on our part, we need to show why we should be elected again , why our party elected again, why our party stands for really important values and principles. and if i had a criticism, it's that we're not conveying that to the country at the moment. and i think no doubt we will soon. but i think that's something that should be a priority now . should be a priority now. >> superb interview as ever, chris. doesn't that 80 seat majority now in back in january 2020 just seemed like an eternity ago. >> it does. and the tories must regret it. i think will will regret it. i think will will regret what's happened. and certainly sir geoffrey cox regrets what's happened back then. martin, the talk was of a three turm boris johnson led government. the labour would say to me when i met them up, how are we going to get rid of johnson? and when's he going to are we going to get rid of johnzover?ind when's he going to are we going to get rid of johnzover? will/hen's he going to are we going to get rid of johnzover? will he 1's he going to are we going to get rid of johnzover? will he retire?]oing to keel over? will he retire? we can't round great can't see round this great blonde now blonde bulk. well, now the blonde bulk. well, now the blonde bulk. well, now the blonde bulk is legged it. so is liz truss. and rishi sunak's trying to clear up the mess. i mean he said there that
5:29 pm
mean he said there in that interview geoffrey cox that the tories to somehow invoke interview geoffrey cox that the tori rorke's to somehow invoke interview geoffrey cox that the tori rorke's driftymehow invoke interview geoffrey cox that the tori rorke's drift mentality. yoke our rorke's drift mentality. that was obviously the small number of red suited british soldiers battling against the zulus coming over the hill, but it's amazing that he would say that there were working majorities around 5050 or so. he still is in the governing party, but he feels it's like rorke's drift. >> what's astonishing about >> and what's astonishing about this, chris, is that with such a huge majority, he's talking 200 majority the labour majority from the labour party that allow the that will effectively allow the conservatives or indeed any opposition, no real chance of stopping legislation. now, we've already seen things like new laws on islamophobia being put to the table by the labour party, new free speech laws and those laws won't be able to be stopped. and in that sense, that's bad for democracy. >> well, i would say it's good for democracy because if the if the labour government is elected and if those are its policies and if those are its policies and the country wants them, then it has to put them through, must prosecute those policies. what is is , and maybe not
5:30 pm
is difficult is, and maybe not so good is maybe if some of these policies are not tested properly in parliament. so what happenedin properly in parliament. so what happened in the first time of the labour government was the human came in. yes. human rights act came in. yes. devolution, the reform of the house it's still set devolution, the reform of the hou by it's still set devolution, the reform of the hou by my it's still set devolution, the reform of the hou by my colleague till set devolution, the reform of the hou by my colleague olivia: devolution, the reform of the hou by my colleague olivia utley out by my colleague olivia utley very on news website. very well on gb news website. what you need is a strong opposition to make sure that the laws through by a by laws are going through by a by a government with a huge majority are tested properly by by mps, but having said that, it's democracy if that's what they fight their election on, if they win, that's what's going to happen. >> and you keep saying, >> and as you keep saying, chris, i think this period will be upon political be looked upon by political historians the 80 seat historians from the 80 seat majority to a 200 odd swing. >> it shouldn't happen. >> it shouldn't happen. >> historians historically , it >> historians historically, it hasn't happened in one tum one five year period of a parliament. >> okay , well, if it happens, >> okay, well, if it happens, well, the side. well, look on the bright side. it's all that's the it's not all over. that's the point. over . it's not all over. that's the point. over. it's point. it's not all over. it's still the tory still salvageable for the tory party. jeffrey party. and it's what jeffrey jeffrey say. jeffrey is trying to say. >> great. well, whatever jeffrey is trying to say. >> we'll. well, whatever jeffrey is trying to say. >> we'll. welia whatever jeffrey is trying to say. >> we'll. welia whato yer happens, we'll have a lot to talk about. we, chris? talk about. won't we, chris? always i've always a pleasure. i've been a fantastic done. thank fantastic week. well done. thank you me

news channel. >> welcome back. 538. we're on the final furlong. let's get cracking on martin daubney on gb news now , is this a case of not news now, is this a case of not in our backyard ? well, outrage in our backyard? well, outrage has been sparked in milton keynes over plans to build 63,000 new homes . the city in 63,000 new homes. the city in buckinghamshire is a famous example of a so—called planned town, designed, of course, in the 1960s to alleviate housing congestion in london. but the new plans will see the city grow by more than 50. well, conservative mp for milton keynes south, ian stewart, spoke to gb news earlier. >> too much, too soon without us seeing any detail of how this is going to work, how our green space is going to be protected , space is going to be protected, andifs space is going to be protected, and it's the quality of life that i'm concerned about . that i'm concerned about. >> and, you know, it's very easy just to say we're going to pump new housing estates the
5:39 pm
new housing estates around the peripheries of milton keynes without giving proper thought to the transport links to the pubuc the transport links to the public services that we all want to see. >> well, i can now speak with property expert russell quirk, regular friend of the show. russell do they need do they know what they're playing at? 63,000 homes being dumped on one area. we know we have a housing shortage , but really, is this shortage, but really, is this the solution ? the solution? >> yeah. it's brilliant, i welcome it, and i'll tell you why. >> first of all, this is a 26 year plan. >> so that 65,000 homes. >> so that 65,000 homes. >> martin looks like a big number, but it's only 2500 homes up to 2050, which is what milton keynes city council are proposing, and look. well done. >> and kudos to milton keynes city council because they're actually planning ahead. >> not only are they planning ahead, but when you have proper development, strategic development, strategic development rather than kind of
5:40 pm
ten properties here, 20 properties there, but proper new town type development, what you end up with as a consequence of developer contributions. >> so the likes of section 106 agreements that get signed by big developers with big projects and a thing called the cil, which is the community infrastructure levy. those things fund to the tune in this instance to the tune of tens of millions of pounds as new doctors, new hospitals , new doctors, new hospitals, new schools, roads, play areas and open spaces. so what really gets my goat martin is to hear the likes of ian stewart and actually the other mp for milton keynes, a chap by the name of ben everett , keynes, a chap by the name of ben everett, lamenting and criticising, critiquing the fact that the area that they represent might actually have a plan for new housing. and as i say, albeit lots of housing, but over a very, very long period of time, these conservative mps, frankly, i mean, no wonder the conservative government has failed so miserably to build
5:41 pm
homes over the life of the 14 years that this government has beenin years that this government has been in power. and i say this, by the as a regular by the way, as a regular conservative on earth conservative voter, how on earth is the country going to build enough homes to accommodate a growing population based on where immigration? where we are with immigration? yes and the fact that people are growing, older and we have an older population, when you've got a conservative government that says we need to build more homes and we need to get to 300,000 a year, and then every single comes to their single mp when it comes to their backyard, they all say , no, it's backyard, they all say, no, it's mindless and it's opportunistic andifs mindless and it's opportunistic and it's political, and this needs to stop because frankly, the only way we get enough houses built in britain is by politicians getting out of the way and stop treating it like the political football that the likes of ian and ben seem set on doing. >> i wonder, though, russell, if such a huge concentration in one spot is the answer we might get, you know, doctors and nurses and hospitals . that'd be great. what
5:42 pm
hospitals. that'd be great. what about work? don't people want to live near where the work is? or are we just creating a huge commuter hub ? commuter hub? >> yeah. no, no, that's a fair point. bearing in mind milton keynesis point. bearing in mind milton keynes is less than an from keynes is less than an hour from london, you commute into london, so you can commute into london, so you can commute into london keynes , the london from milton keynes, the same from, know, same as i do from, you know, brentwood into london, brentwood and essex into london, several days week. you know, several days a week. you know, it's similar journey . it's a fairly similar journey. and of course, look, with infrastructure and housing and people will ultimately come on will come employment. now whether is small whether that employment is small employment, you know, corner shops businesses or shops and small businesses or indeed the attraction of big employers because they know that they've got a workforce on their doorstep and what we've got to doorstep and what we've got to do is embrace the inevitable, which is if we're a country that is going to expand to 70, 75, 80 million people, particularly on the basis that actually only 6% of britain, martin is built on residentially only 6. so the nimbys that you refer to in your opening piece, the fact that they are railing against basically any development within
5:43 pm
100 miles of where they live on the basis that they think it means that green and means that our green and pleasant up pleasant land is being torn up and concreted over. i'm afraid statistically, it's simply isn't true. where will these people expect their grandchildren to live if we don't build the required houses that this country needs on an annual basis? >> and of course , russell, we >> and of course, russell, we see reports all the time about young people now feel stuck. they feel stymied. their mental health is going down. they've given up all notion, really, of being able to ever afford to get on the property ladder. so you see these kind of mass developments as a potential solution unlocking the solution to unlocking the pathway to property for young people. so therefore, he thinks a idea left, right and a good idea left, right and centre. you? centre. do you? >> as long as there's >> i do, yes, as long as there's infrastructure. and i think that your concentration infrastructure. and i think that your made concentration infrastructure. and i think that your made . concentration infrastructure. and i think that your made . yes, ncentration infrastructure. and i think that your made . yes, ofzntration infrastructure. and i think that your made . yes, of coursen is well made. yes, of course this needs to be evenly spread. unfortunately and you know, people that are in the north of britain watching this will say, yeah, but but what about levelling up, you know, what yeah, but but what about levellithe jp, you know, what yeah, but but what about levellithe faryou know, what yeah, but but what about levellithe far reachesw, what yeah, but but what about levellithe far reaches of what yeah, but but what about levellithe far reaches of thet about the far reaches of the northeast and
5:44 pm
northeast and northwest? and look, point. but look, that's a fair point. but you can't expect developers to want perhaps want to build where perhaps there's not quite as much demand as elsewhere. and look, unfortunately, and i say this with great hesitation, probably the one thing that i've agreed with, with regard to keir starmers many announcements over the last few months . and of the last few months. and of course, we'll hear more of them in the run up to the election, as and when it's going to be. he's actually being really sensible about house building. and think to put my and i think if i had to put my money on any party in the next few years, being able to build the required amount of housing that needs, i'm that this country needs, i'm afraid , and i really regret afraid, and i really regret saying this, but probably saying this, but it's probably true. is a keir true. it probably is a keir starmer government, believe it or because he's the only or not, because he's the only one sense. one talking any sense. >> say. >> astonishing thing to say. russell for russell quirk, thanks for joining us. and indeed, sir keir starmer that towns starmer has said that new towns will part of his portfolio will be a part of his portfolio of so let's all of solutions. so let's have all eyes on that. thanks for joining us. property expert russell quirk. pleasure to now. quirk. always a pleasure to now. gb news has helped raise so far £17,000. well done to you. it

5:51 pm
and to honour the lancaster. it's such a such a statement piece for lincolnshire. you know, county and know, we are bomber county and we're proud of it. >> the pace of the million pound project has dropped as the price of materials like steel rises. >> we've actually been gifted the steel for these ribs, which again is about £20,000. but we need some cash now to pay for the labour to fabricate them . the labour to fabricate them. >> soon the lancaster will be lifted onto a frame at charlie white's farm on a hillside overlooking the border with nottinghamshire, to be seen by 34,000 drivers every day they're going to look up and see this landmark on the side of a hill in lincolnshire and think what an amazing tribute to the counties. although designed as a heritage landmark, the charity understands how meaningful the lancaster will be to those who remember lives lost . remember lives lost. >> hopefully this will just remind people of the sacrifice

one that nike have put on. well, the result is now in. brace yourself for a drum roll. i can tell you that a massive 96% answered yes. the england flag should should be on the england football shirt 96% and overwhelming tidal wave of common sense. only 4% seem to agree with what nike have done and the fa. so thanks to everybody who got involved and had a vote. now on that topic, hundreds and hundreds of emails have come in. let's go through some of them quickly before the have come in. let's go through som of if them quickly before the have come in. let's go through som of the em quickly before the have come in. let's go through som of the show. ickly before the have come in. let's go through som of the show. ickly says re the have come in. let's go through som of the show. ickly says this|e end of the show. rob says this if it wasn't an election year, then wokeist starmer and mordaunt wouldn't give a monkeys about the flag on the england shirt. that's straight to the point there, rob. secondly john says this england's patron saint was born in turkey. this is fake outrage yet nice one john, jonathan says this in america

it's an offence to deface or desecrate the stars and stripes. nike seems to think it's okay to disrespect disrespect. however, our cross of saint george leave our cross of saint george leave our flag alone. jackie adds this i'm absolutely fuming over the colour of the cross on the new kit. by the way , have a look at kit. by the way, have a look at the colour of the bisexual pride flag on google. the colours are the same. i'll leave the rest to you. okay. that's it. there's been hundreds and hundreds of emails on that. certainly got you talking all week . we first you talking all week. we first went on that story on tuesday here on the martin daubney show andifs here on the martin daubney show and it's now involved everybody from the prime minister downwards have an opinion. gareth southgate giving a press conference at 730 tonight. no doubt he will be asked to comment on this. what will he say? what will his opinion be dominating that match ahead of the game with brazil? everyone is talking about this flag on the back of the shirt. is it the biggest pr own goal of all time?
