it's love that gets us through. a mother's love that wants to protect her children at all costs. a mother's love who will allow the world to talk in order to protect her little ones . a to protect her little ones. a mother's love who is now forced to speak out because the world forgot what it was to respect a family's privacy . my heart goes family's privacy. my heart goes out to her royal highness and all the family. i hope you get the time and space you need to heal the time and space you need to heal. that illustration there of the princess of wales with her children. well, it was last night in a very powerful video message that the princess of wales spoke about the huge shock after tests identified cancer following her abdominal surgery, and she spoke about the incredibly tough couple of months that her family have endured. >> it has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment, but most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to george, charlotte and louis in a way that's appropriate for them and to reassure them that i'm
12:08 pm
going to be okay. as i've said to them, i am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me healin on the things that will help me heal in my mind, body and spirit . having william by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too, as is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. it means so much to us both . means so much to us both. >> that was princess of wales, of course, speaking last night. we can talk to gb news royal correspondent cameron walker, who is in windsor for us this afternoon , only a short drive, afternoon, only a short drive, really, from where william and catherine and their children reside . cameron. good afternoon. reside. cameron. good afternoon. we're not expecting any word from kensington palace, are we, today? but i imagine that there's been lots of well—wishers gathering in windsor who want to pass on their good wishes to the family . their good wishes to the family. >> there certainly is, pip, and there's been an outpouring of love and support for the
12:09 pm
princess of wales throughout the world. morning we world. early this morning we observed member of the public observed a member of the public laying gates of laying flowers at the gates of windsor castle. here the flowers have taken inside and i do have been taken inside and i do understand that the princess of wales has been informed of those flowers at her residence inside the grounds of windsor castle, aslef cottage, which is where she lives with prince william and her three young children prince george, ten, princess charlotte, eight, and prince louis, five. almost six. that we don't don't know if they are there or in norfolk. kensington palace, understandably do not want us to speculate because the princess wishes to have her treatments cancer in treatments for cancer in private, and that preventative chemotherapy, as she described last night. but this has clearly been a lot for her to take in. as well as prince william as well, because prince william now has a father and a wife who are both battling cancer. they also have three very young children, and the prince and princess of wales priority is very much their children. wanted to their children. they wanted to tell them when the time was
12:10 pm
right and in a way that they could understand. and now that the three children are off school for the easter holidays , school for the easter holidays, thatis school for the easter holidays, that is why the princess decided to announce to the world yesterday about her cancer diagnosis, because her children can now be protected behind palace walls . there's been an palace walls. there's been an outpouring of love and support from those close to the princess as well. charles spencer, the brother of the late princess diana, says that the princess's message yesterday showed incredible strength and poise. the king spokesperson last night told us that his majesty is proud of his beloved daughter in law for her courage. james middleton, princess catherine's brother younger brother, posted on instagram yesterday a childhood photograph of the pair of them on the mountain and the caption read over the years we have many mountains have climbed many mountains together as a family. we will climb this one with you too, and i think that just shows perhaps the strength and the unity of the strength and the unity of the middleton there the the middleton family. there the duke and duchess of sussex from the other side of the atlantic,
12:11 pm
have also released very short have also released a very short statement saying we wish health and happiness, health and heaung and happiness, health and healing for kate and family healing for kate and the family and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace. and that word privacy. i think , is really word privacy. i think, is really key here. the princess of wales has had intense public scrutiny and interest over the last few months. the hysteria and the conspiracy theories online have been a hell of a lot, to be perfectly honest . and she said perfectly honest. and she said in her statement, we now need some time and space and privacy to complete that treatment. the princess is 42 years old. she will be receiving the best medical care this country can offer, and she clearly has asked for public and the press and social for media peace for her to undergo treatment in the privacy and so she can recover and look forward to the future . and look forward to the future. >> it's been interesting, hasn't it, cameron? the number of people all around the world and people all around the world and people in the public eye who are now leaping to kate's defence
12:12 pm
and appealing for privacy on her behalf. i mean, i note that the hollywood actress jamie lee curtis has posted on instagram saying, can we please just stop with this ? i won't say the word with this? i won't say the word bleep bleep. you can imagine conspiracy theory . she's a human conspiracy theory. she's a human being with young children and clearly some sort of a health issue. and is all this the reason why you think it was a video message that she did last night, not just a statement, because she could have released that that statement, couldn't she? the video message was that because she was showing people, this is this is me. because she was showing people, this is this is me . this isn't this is this is me. this isn't an impersonator. this is me . an impersonator. this is me. >> yeah. i think the princess clearly would have been very much aware about the conspiracy theories online. however ridiculous they sounded. and of course she did apologise for that photograph that she posted on mother's day with the best of intentions . she on mother's day with the best of intentions. she did edit it, to
12:13 pm
try and present her family in the best possible light. but of course, that did fuel the conspiracy theories. i think a number of people who were number of the people who were posting those online, now that we know exactly wrong we know exactly what is wrong with the princess of wales, are perhaps having second thoughts as was the best as to whether that was the best idea. you're right, the idea. but you're right, the i know that that video, which we saw last night was not edited. it was filmed independently by bbc studios. it filmed bbc studios. it was filmed on wednesday in the grounds here of windsor castle. whether whether that was because they were worried how it would be perceived by the public, i doubt it. the princess does things on her own terms. she would have wanted to do the video. she would wanted directly would have wanted to directly speak british public and speak to the british public and indeed the world, and be as open and honest with them possible and honest with them as possible , and also directly appeal to them that wants privacy and them that she wants privacy and peace to be alone, to peace to be left alone, to recover and receive that cancer treatment . treatment. >> okay. royal correspondent catherine walker, thanks catherine cameron walker, thanks so much for talking to me this lunchtime. we'll of course , lunchtime. we'll of course, rejoin you later. i want to talk
12:14 pm
now the royal biographer, now to the royal biographer, ingnd now to the royal biographer, ingrid seward. good afternoon to you , ingrid. thanks for talking you, ingrid. thanks for talking to me as well. this afternoon on gb news, cameron showed there the such a lovely, supportive instagram post from kate's younger brother james middleton . younger brother james middleton. and we obviously are talking about the support she's had from king charles. but but let's just touch as well upon the close family unit that she does have there . she's very, very close to there. she's very, very close to her family and she will be relying on them, so heavily for , relying on them, so heavily for, for that emotional support now, won't she ? won't she? >> well, the middleton family have always been there for all their children. i think they're immensely supportive . and if you immensely supportive. and if you think back to the early days when kate and william first met at saint andrew's university, it was the middleton family that sort of took william under their wing. and there were some wonderful photographs of them together . and, you could see
12:15 pm
together. and, you could see that that , you know, he went on that that, you know, he went on houday that that, you know, he went on holiday with them, you could see that they were all embracing. and they are those sort of people, know , and i and i people, you know, and i and i think that both kate and william are very, very appreciative of the support they've got, you know, outside their own little family unit . family unit. >> yeah, it is, it is so important. and in terms of the next few weeks, we know that they want their their privacy. how do you see it panning out in terms of royal engagements. we're not going to see prince william for a while yet, are we? >> i imagine that during the easter holidays , i think, which easter holidays, i think, which lasts till the middle of about the 17th of april, william will stay , with with kate and the stay, with with kate and the children, and i'm sure this is absolutely with the agreement of his father, the king, he will say, look, you know, you're not monarch yet. i am. you deal with your family. they are the future , but he will obviously come back to work because he'll want
12:16 pm
to also support the institution of the monarchy. so he's got a tough time ahead of him. >> yeah, absolutely . and his >> yeah, absolutely. and his most important role is as a father. isn't it? and you've been covering the royals for a long, long time, many, many years. how how blown away were you when you saw that video, that video message from kate last night ? last night? >> well, i'm sure that i myself and everyone else, we all felt the same. we all felt, you know , the same. we all felt, you know, shocked and also very proud that this delicate woman, you know, had to actually sit there and tell the world about her illness because no one was believing anything anyone else said. what what a difficult position she was put in. and i think we are, you know, those of us that care are very, very proud of her. >> did you find it disappointing as well, though? was there an
12:17 pm
element of disappointment ? element of disappointment? because i watched it and i just thought the fact that she's had to do this on top of everything else and sitting in front of a camera giving a message to the world like that , so personal, so world like that, so personal, so intimate for me, it was disappointing that she had to resort to doing it well. >> i think we'd felt the disappointment before that . i disappointment before that. i think we'd already, you know, been shocked by it, by the onune been shocked by it, by the online trolls and the way that that the whole thing had got blown out of hand and i think watching her do it, i just felt very proud. i didn't feel disappointed. i thought, she's doing the right thing. she's taking control of her own destiny. and it can't have been easy because we know that she doesn't enjoy public speaking very much, and having to speak on your own to a camera without, you know, without a script would be very, very hard. and to talk about something so intimate, so i overwhelming feeling and i think probably most people agree
12:18 pm
with that. we were just so proud of her to do it. >> yeah. i mean, i've got to say, i watched it and i it did make me feel so emotional for her as a mother, as a mother of three young children . three young children. >> well, obviously she'd taken , >> well, obviously she'd taken, you know, time to explain to the children exactly what was was happening. and i understand i've never been in this position, luckily, but i understand that it must have been very difficult and to be done, know, and had to be done, you know, very delicately, because they are, know, are, of course, you know, little, little are going to little, little kids are going to think . so she had to think the worst. so she had to be very delicate in the way she explained it to them. and, she, she realises how important it is that they're all together now because they're not like, you know, they are such public figures. they're such celebrities globally. they have to they have to sort of hunker down and protect the children in a way that, you know, you or i would never have to do. >> yeah, hunker down and be human beings. did it remind you
12:19 pm
at all? ingrid of 1997, when princess diana had passed away and there was all that pressure wasn't there for the to queen return from balmoral, where she was caring for william and harry. and in the end she had to face the cameras. i mean, it was a lot. it was much more of an official statement, but but did it remind you in any way of that penod it remind you in any way of that period ? penod? >>i penod? >> i think it reminded me. the chakra, i think, reminded me more of when john major stood up in the house of commons and in in the house of commons and said that the prince and princess of wales were separating and that to me was was just that came out of the blue like this came out of the blue like this came out of the blue in a way . blue like this came out of the blue in a way. i think the thing with the queen, to my mind, was slightly different. she was monarch. she'd always done things in a traditional way. so this was something that , you this was something that, you know, she was slightly pushed into. i don't think that kate was pushed into this. i think she saw this as the only way to
12:20 pm
you know, quieten down a very volatile situation . volatile situation. >> and who do you think ? >> and who do you think? >> and who do you think? >> because you know them better than than all of us. but who do you think within the royal family now? are the people that are holding the fort together, if because are if you like, because they are under immense strain, as any family would be? >> well, i think as always, it's the princess royal that would be at the helm, holding the fort together , you know, hand in together, you know, hand in hand. not literally , but sort of hand. not literally, but sort of emotionally hand in hand with her brother , the king, he can't her brother, the king, he can't go out and about. she can, but she's always been the strong one, and she's always been the practical one. and she will be holding this whole thing together. and also, she's doing a lot with, the duchess of edinburgh, with sophie and edward. so i think between the three of them, they are going to be the sort of the linchpin of the family over the next few
12:21 pm
weeks. >> i mean, there are those who are saying, oh, the monarchy's in crisis and they're being very, you know, do you think it's a bit too dramatic , all it's a bit too dramatic, all this talking about how is the monarchy going to survive all this ? this? >> well, you know, that's newspaper headlines for you. i think you have to. it's always been the same. it's never , been the same. it's never, neven been the same. it's never, never, ever changed and it never will. i had not mentioned will. but i had not mentioned queen camilla, who has absolutely been stoic , never, absolutely been stoic, never, ever would have thought she'd have to be pushed into a role like this. and she's just there smiling , talking to people, smiling, talking to people, being perfectly normal, being very friendly. and she is the stability and anne and charles are the sort of workhorses . she are the sort of workhorses. she is the stability. so i don't think the monarchy is remotely in crisis. i think it's a difficult time, but i don't think it's in crisis. >> ingrid seward really appreciate your your insight this afternoon. >> thank you so much. thank you. good to talk to you. thank you. you're with me, pip tomson on gb
12:22 pm
news saturday. we've got plenty more to come on today's show, including. i'll be reading out some of your messages. and very shortly we're going to be joining our reporters across the country to hear from members of the public, from you who have also been sending their best wishes to the princess of wales. you're with gb news. i'm pip tomson. stay with me.
12:25 pm
good afternoon. i'm pip tomson. great to have you with us. we are going across the country now. we are talking to jack carson, who is in birmingham . carson, who is in birmingham. jack, good afternoon to you. we obviously want to talk to you about the reaction, the outpouring of support from the princess of wales and there's
12:26 pm
plenty of it in brummie land, i know. and there's also plenty of it in devon. jeff moody is there . good afternoon to you, jeff. let's start with you. you've been talking to plenty of people. what messages have they been sending to the princess of wales ? wales? >> well, as, as in the whole of the country, most people here are very shocked and saddened to hear the news. people had no idea that she was that. that ill. that it has come as a complete shock. a lot of love and support for the princess has been coming out today, but also a general sense that a general sense of anger that she's been put in this position, that she's had to make this announcement. put in this position, that she's had to make this announcement . a had to make this announcement. a lot of people saying to me, look, it really is of look, it really is none of anybody else's business what she's wise she's going through health wise on a personal basis. we shouldn't be getting quite so involved with it . the general involved with it. the general message that people have been saying me today, as well saying to me here today, as well as her very well, is as wishing her very well, is that hope that now people that they hope that now people can leave her alone to , to heal
12:27 pm
can leave her alone to, to heal in, in private. this is what people have been saying to me today. >> it's absolutely tragic . >> it's absolutely tragic. >> it's absolutely tragic. >> absolutely tragic. i mean, you know, obviously, if it's true , which, you know, hopefully true, which, you know, hopefully it's not too bad, you know, and, you know, obviously everything that's been going on in the last few months, i think she's i assumed that she'd probably had assumed that she'd probably had a hysterectomy or something like that. so, you know, i was sort of obviously quite concerned, but, you know, at the same time she's, you know, she'd just be left to her own devices and, you know, hopefully get over this and live a normal life. i think she's a lovely lady. >> it just should be left alone to get on. >> and, you know, just be left alone . alone. >> really. it's nobody's business what's wrong with them? at the end of the day, just because they're who they are and everyone thinks they've a everyone thinks they've got a right everything, and right to know everything, and they don't. >> think it's very sad >> i just think it's very sad for whole family. her father for the whole family. her father in herself , her husband,
12:28 pm
for the whole family. her father in herself, her husband, his in law herself, her husband, his father has got cancer . in law herself, her husband, his father has got cancer. his wife possibly has cancer. whether it was all removed and having treatment for it, i just think it's very difficult for them. >> and it's about time everybody left them alone . left them alone. >> what do you think about all the media speculation about it? >> it's like a school playground in the school playground, you get the people saying what they want to say, when they want to say. it's a form of bullying. it's online bullying . it's online bullying. >> a lot of people also saying that it's brought back memories of their own diagnosis. this feels very personal to a of feels very personal to a lot of people and a lot of people saying they were very impressed and touched and indeed shed a tear at the end of her video message yesterday when she said that whoever you are , if you that whoever you are, if you have had a cancer diagnosis, you are not alone. >> yes, it was so powerful. jeff moody in devon, thank you very much. let's talk to jack carson, who's a lot further north in
12:29 pm
birmingham this afternoon at that point that jeff brought up jack about , actually the comfort jack about, actually the comfort that the princess of wales is bringing to others, and how how it's reminding people of the importance of, of love the importance of, of love the importance of, of love the importance of being close to your loved ones, be that family or friends. what have people been to you ? been saying to you? >> yeah. well, that feeling is echoed across the country. certainly, certainly here in birmingham. what jeff was saying there, that final part of the final message of from princess catherine yesterday saying that you are not alone, just from the people that i've been speaking to in birmingham morning to in birmingham this morning and that feels like and today that that feels like the message that has really got through. macmillan cancer , through. macmillan cancer, support say that around 3 million people currently in the uk are living with cancer. there's somebody diagnosed on average around every 90s. so for some things, certainly the feeling here for someone as poignant and as such a huge
12:30 pm
figurehead within, of course , figurehead within, of course, the royal family and that institution within the united kingdom, for them to become and be so open about their diagnosis, of course, as well as his majesty the king. that's certainly touched a lot of people here. certainly a woman i spoke to earlier on that said that she had had cancer herself, and she'd lost her mum when she was young as well. so she knew and understood the kind of feelings and the sympathy and the empathy towards, of course, the empathy towards, of course, the prince and princess of wales, very three young, very young children. so that's certainly that's certainly feeling that they are grateful for, for the princess of wales for, for the princess of wales for being so open about her diagnosis. but also, of course, very supportive and sympathetic towards, of course, this treatment that she is now about to start . but take treatment that she is now about to start. but take a listen to what a few people told me a little bit earlier on. >> shocking. it's a private matter, really, and i think the media and the press had have hounded her for the last three

12:32 pm
really draw a line, of course, under this wild speculation that's been over social media, some the people that some of the people that i've spoken morning like spoken to this morning feel like the princess wales to them, the princess of wales to them, was forced into this in was almost forced into this in some ways because of that wild speculation that didn't seem to stop whenever, of course, the royal tried to play down, royal family tried to play down, of course, and play down the rumours and stick to, of course, what they said was the original plan of returning after easter. so yeah , mixed feelings of being so yeah, mixed feelings of being grateful that princess catherine has come over so openly about this diagnosis. but feeling now is the time to draw that line and respect her privacy at this difficult time. >> jack carson in birmingham . >> jack carson in birmingham. jeff moody in devon, thank you both . good afternoon. you're both. good afternoon. you're with me, pip tomson on gb news saturday. very shortly, we're going to be bringing you the very latest on that attack on a concert hall near moscow, where we know now the death toll is rising. it is now at least 140 people have died. the russian

12:40 pm
pip tomson, on your tv, online and on digital radio. now we are, of course, talking about the health of the princess of wales. she gave that powerful video message last night . but video message last night. but what i want to do this hour is also broaden this out, because her diagnosis , this has prompted her diagnosis, this has prompted a bigger conversation about about how you comfort people being diagnosed with cancer, how you explain it to children who might be affected , and maybe might be affected, and maybe some of what we're talking about this afternoon will help. you might bring comfort to your family. so that's what i want to do over the next couple of hours. let's just bring you a very small snippet of what the princess of wales said last night in january. >> i underwent major abdominal surgery in london and at the time it was thought that my condition was non—cancerous . the condition was non—cancerous. the surgery was successful, however , surgery was successful, however, tests after the operation found cancer had been present . my
12:41 pm
cancer had been present. my medical team therefore advised that i should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and i'm now in the early stages of that treatment . that treatment. >> well, i want to explain a little bit more about what all that might mean and what might mean for you, maybe for members of your family , your friends. of your family, your friends. and we're going to talk to lead women's health consultant at chichester hospital, doctor melanie tipples . and i want to melanie tipples. and i want to explore just a little bit more. melanie, thanks ever so much for talking to me this afternoon about term preventative about this term preventative chemotherapy. can we just talk first of all about what that means exactly . means exactly. >> so what, princess catherine's explained to us is that she has been identified as having had an operation as having had some cancer cells present in the tests that were performed after her surgery. she is therefore been advised to have some
12:42 pm
additional treatment to prevent it coming back and to keep her. well, that's sometimes known as adjuvant or given alongside, treatment , adjuvant or given alongside, treatment, and that will be to ensure she stays well now and that she does not have any further problems . further problems. >> how unusual is it or not for somebody to undergo that sort of surgery and to then be diagnosed with a form of cancer? >> so to be clear, we don't know what operation kate has had or what operation kate has had or what the diagnosis is , is. but what the diagnosis is, is. but whenever anybody does undergo surgery in a piece of tissue is removed from their body. that would be, checked to ensure whether they do have a cancer diagnosis or a benign and non cancer diagnosis. so in this situation she's had some something removed from her abdomen as she's explained. and be diagnosed as having found some cancer cells present . and some cancer cells present. and that can happen in up to 5% of
12:43 pm
patients. obviously the incidence of that happening depends on your age and why you're having surgery, but it's clear that she's explaining it wasn't an expected diagnosis . wasn't an expected diagnosis. >> and when you go undergo preventative chemotherapy , she preventative chemotherapy, she what what effects can that have on the patient? i mean kate she she she looks pretty well there. she's in the early stages of treatment . but how long can it treatment. but how long can it last. and what's the toll that that it can take on you. >> so i think it's important to understand all cancers are treated with different types of treatment. so it really does depend on what the diagnosis is. and then there's different types of preventative treatment you can use. now she's advised to us it's chemotherapy. and we're all assuming that's something that's going in a drip. but what we don't know is what she's trying to prevent. so it depends. so
12:44 pm
for example, if it was some drugs would make you lose your hair and others wouldn't. we don't know whether she's having a single agent drug, whether she's having more than one agent. we don't know what we're trying prevent. and i don't trying to prevent. and i don't think should be guessing. think we should be guessing. it's significant undertaking it's a significant undertaking for anybody to have a cancer diagnosis, and that's where the impact will be on her and her family. and she's being reminded of over a course of of that over a course of treatment . that course of treatment. that course of treatment, one would expect, might be six cycles of treatment given on something like a three weekly basis, but it could be different and we don't know. so we're only all guessing. and she may well be able to have the treatment at home, or she may be requiring to access help in a hospital in now you can have some forms of chemotherapy residing at home, which is much nicer and much kinder for the patients . and they can be with patients. and they can be with their family and friends, but other people prefer to have it in a hospital setting. all of this is just we just don't know.
12:45 pm
and we feel very much that we all would like to support her and family they're and the family as they're undergoing treatment . undergoing this treatment. >> absolutely. and offer our >> absolutely. and we offer our support and thoughts to anybody that has been diagnosed with canceh that has been diagnosed with cancer, something that the princess of wales said was about. she's focusing on the things that will help her heal in her mind, body and spirit. what sort of things can any can people do when they are diagnosed and obviously mental strength? your brain health becomes so important . becomes so important. >> so i think whenever we give a diagnosis of cancer as health care professionals , we obviously care professionals, we obviously first of all, we have to advise the patient of the stage and then the treatment that will be involved . but alongside of that, involved. but alongside of that, we have a whole team of supporting people to work with us to assess health needs for what people require. and there are supports available both for
12:46 pm
mental wellbeing. and physical wellbeing, and accessing things like holistic therapies, and we do that both within the hospital setting and the charities that work with us. for example, macmillan, and marie curie provide additional information and support for both the actual individual and the family and the children, and all of this will be made available to kate, as it would be to any person who has a diagnosis of cancer. >> and how do you, in your experience, explain it to children ? children? >> so very often , we will be >> so very often, we will be explaining it to the actual person who's been affected . and person who's been affected. and anybody has the option to bring anybody has the option to bring a family member. and certainly when you see more senior family members, senior people with that diagnosis, they very often bring children with them . in this children with them. in this situation. we've got a younger family , who've been exposed to
12:47 pm
family, who've been exposed to this, and it's probably that the parents will tell the children the diagnosis , and as a whole the diagnosis, and as a whole group, they may decide to go to see someone for a family session to go through what it means for kate herself, how that's going to affect her. and how it's going to affect the children. and they'll be very much, focusing on the fact that it's actually a preventative treatment to ensure she stays well and is available to them to support them and the family. >> and one final thought is how her video message will be helping others today and bringing them some comfort . bringing them some comfort. >> certainly, i think there'll be a lot of shock at the diagnosis, but as she goes through treatment and is back out in looking after the family in the public eye, it certainly is something that other people will gain hope from and wish to follow their her example . follow their her example. >> yeah, absolutely. as she did say at her words at the very end
12:48 pm
was you are not alone. and we all concur with that. really appreciate your time. this afternoon, lead women's health consultant at chichester hosphal consultant at chichester hospital, doctor melanie tipples. really good to talk to you . thank you. you're with me you. thank you. you're with me pip tomson on gb news saturday. really to good have your company this afternoon. and there is lots more coming up on today's show. very shortly we're going to be bringing you the latest on that attack at a moscow concert hall. the death toll has been rising and vladimir putin, the russian president, has been speaking in the last few minutes and says that all those responsible will be punished. we'll bring you the latest next. you're with gb news, britain's news channel
12:52 pm
last few minutes, the russian president, vladimir putin, has been speaking about last night's shooting, which he's described as a bloody and barbaric, barbaric terrorist attack. he says that all those involved have tried to escape and cross into ukraine, for all direct perpetrators of the terrorist attack. he said all those who shot and killed people were found and detained. now this attack happened at crocus city hall near moscow last night. the death toll has been rising. men, women and children mercilessly gunned down. joining me now is the russian journalist alexei bryusov. good afternoon to you, alexei. let's speak first of all about what vladimir putin is saying in the last few minutes , saying in the last few minutes, where he is suggesting that there is a link to ukraine here. >> yeah, that's right, russian
12:53 pm
president vladimir putin just addressed the nation . and addressed the nation. and obviously, like the whole russia is mourning for the vicious terrorist attack that took place yesterday. putin said that we should stay united and that all four gunmen have been captured. they will be held accountable and there will be an investigation into who is behind this horrible, horrible attack. so far, daesh has claimed the responsibility, but the kremlin doesn't seem convinced. and since the shooters were trying to escape through ukraine, i think russia will try to find the ukrainian trail in it. especially since earlier this month the us embassy actually warned its citizens in russia that there might be a terrorist attack coming. so i think, they will be looking into, western intelligence agencies, maybe the cia perpetrating this, attack. using ukrainians. i think we should actually expect some further developments, in ukraine
12:54 pm
considering this. >> but ukraine has has absolutely denied any involvement . involvement. >> the ukrainian spy chief did say that, it would be unreasonable for those attackers to escape through ukraine because obviously the russian ukrainian border is highly secured right now. but, just, just imagine people going to see a concert, people with their families , with their loved ones, families, with their loved ones, their children. and for a gunman appearing with machine guns and flamethrowers and just shooting everyone you know, the death toll is, of 100, and it keeps rising . so, of course, the whole rising. so, of course, the whole the whole country is in shock because normally , you know, because normally, you know, moscow is a very secure city. we have cctv cameras everywhere and a lot of police on the streets . a lot of police on the streets. so really, russia did not see such an attack since probably early 2000, alexei. >> and you know, we will. i'm sorry to break in. we have to go because it's almost the end of

outpouring of support from around the world for the princess of wales, from politicians , ordinary members of politicians, ordinary members of the public, and indeed, of course, her own family as well, very publicly. now, i spoke to a big gb news fan a little bit earlier on who has travelled from leigh on sea to windsor to, to to, kind of pay, tributes to the princess of wales and wish her well and enjoy the windsor town this weekend . her name is town this weekend. her name is anne anderson and this is what she had to say about the princess of wales. >> i mean, to sit on that bench on your own, making an announcement that announcement to the world that was hard, wasn't it? it was hard, yeah. and she she did it very well. i mean, she's so lovely. i mean , everybody's lovely. i mean, everybody's really shuts down, don't they. yeah. and we just said it was so quiet. in the town last night. very quiet. people walking around. but wherever we went they were talking about it, weren't they? murmured voices. even at breakfast this morning in the hotel, they were talking
1:11 pm
about it. >> just complete shock and of course, it's very hard for prince william as well, because his father and wife have cancer. that's right. >> yeah. scary him, >> yeah. it's scary for him, isn't really must be isn't it? it really must be scary, you know? and everybody, all about why he all the speculation about why he dropped of his dropped out that day of his godfather, if that was godfather, i mean, if that was the they got the news. the day they got the news. goodness gracious me . you know, goodness gracious me. you know, that have been horrendous. that must have been horrendous. it it ? you know, just. it mustn't it? you know, just. oh, it's just awful, the whole thing. >> what did you think of all the speculation surrounding the princess last three princess over the last three months harassment that princess over the last three mondreadful, harassment that princess over the last three mon dreadful, spitefulsment that princess over the last three mon dreadful, spiteful people hat just dreadful, spiteful people in this world, don't they? >> you know, and it's not necessary, is it? it's absolutely necessary. absolutely not necessary. neither them deserve it. neither of them deserve it. hasn't he been through enough? that boy, you know what with his brother and all i hope is his brother and all i hope is his brother doesn't come back. he's not needed here. you know, his wife's not needed here. i think someone at breakfast this morning was saying they they're holding out the olive branch, and they think this might be the their back in. we don't need their way back in. we don't need them. made it absolutely them. he's made it absolutely clear he feels about his
1:12 pm
clear how he feels about his family. so go and don't come back. you know . so that's back. you know. so that's honestly how i feel. but we all wish and hope that she gets better as quickly as possible. >> well, the duke and duchess of sussex have released a statement saying we wish health and heaung saying we wish health and healing for kate and the family and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace. will the prince and princess of wales priority is their three young children prince george, princess charlotte and prince louis. they wanted to tell their children about the princess's cancer diagnosis in their own time, and the time that felt right for them. now, of course, all three of them are off school for their easter holidays, and that is why the decided to the the princess decided to tell the world can all be in world so they can all be in private together, protected as they support catherine through her cancer diagnosis and her treatment. >> catherine walker, thanks very much talking to me now. i hope is former royal correspondent

for the sun charles rae . good for the sun charles rae. good afternoon to you, charles. i hope you're there. i can't see you. there you are. good to see you. there you are. good to see you this afternoon, charles. on gb news saturday, first of all, i just wondered what your reaction was when you saw that that incredibly powerful video last night from the princess of wales. because it was unprecedented, wasn't it ? i unprecedented, wasn't it? i mean, did it, did it bring a lump to your throat ? lump to your throat? >> oh, it brought everything to my throat, to be perfectly honest , i was shocked my throat, to be perfectly honest, i was shocked and devastated. >> i mean, i'm not someone who gets easily shocked by by by things. this this was a this things. and this this was a this was a real kick in the kicking. >> the tum basically, with with that announcement, i think she was very, very brave , to do it. was very, very brave, to do it. >> and i think it was the right time to do it, given that she had to tell the children it's a terrible thing to have to tell any relatives, never mind them
1:14 pm
being ten, eight and five. >> and it's great that they are now away from school and away from prying eyes, and they're all together for at least a couple of weeks, in private . couple of weeks, in private. >> yeah. i mean, it's it is an incredibly difficult time for any family, for this family that is so, so public, seen by millions around the world, that bnngs millions around the world, that brings with it that that extra pressure as well . what pressure pressure as well. what pressure do you think it will place on other members of the royal family now, charles, in terms of pubuc family now, charles, in terms of public engagements, i mean, i'm not so sure . not so sure. >> i don't think it'll increase any pressure that they're that they're already under . i mean, they're already under. i mean, it's a it's a slimmed down royal family and they will carry on, you know the queen has played a stoic, game as well as , the duke stoic, game as well as, the duke of edinburgh and the duchess of edinburgh, they've all, you
1:15 pm
know, come up to the mark and, you know, carried out various royal duties. william has carried on up to today to do, royal duties . and, you know, royal duties. and, you know, he's had the weight of the world on his shoulders, you know, given what is what has happened , given what is what has happened, you know, you know, he lost his mother at a very young age, a teenage age. he's lost his grandmother last year. he's been told his father is battling cancer , and now he's faced with cancer, and now he's faced with his his his wife battling cancer . but i just, to be perfectly honest, i don't know how he's managing , honest, i don't know how he's managing, because surely that's enough drama in one person's life. and he's he's only on his early 40s. he's not he's not exactly, you know, an old an old man. and i think he's behaved admirably throughout this whole thing. and, you know, i also want to say i'm absolutely furious with the amount of trolls that have been on social media, and some of whom are so—called celebrities and people
1:16 pm
who comment . but, you know, for who comment. but, you know, for a living on this and they've criticised the royal family, they criticised catherine and, and, william suggested that the video that we saw at the windsor farm was a fake video. there's even some people on today claiming that this is this is not catherine doing this, this, this, this , this heartfelt this, this, this heartfelt video. i mean, they are just shocking . and i just hope they shocking. and i just hope they crawl back into the hole that they came from. they're just dreadful. >> you know what, charles? i don't think we should spend a million a millisecond talking about pond life quite like that, quite frankly. it's atrocious. what i do want to focus on just a little bit is, is the prince of wales and the sort of person that he he is because he clearly is, is very strong , that he he is because he clearly is, is very strong, a man of fortitude to cope with all this . fortitude to cope with all this. >> oh, yes. i you know, i think he is, i mean, he's had an awful
1:17 pm
lot on his shoulders in his, in his life as i've just said. and i think he's dealing with things very, very well . and we saw him very, very well. and we saw him in, i think it was sheffield the other day, where he was, joking away with various people as he does at various charities, there wasn't a hint of anything that wasn't a hint of anything that was to come, and that's it. he's got a royal role to do. he does it to the best of his ability. and, you know, he's still got to deal with things in his private life, like we all have to do. but, you know, to deal, have to deal with, you know, someone so close to him , as catherine and close to him, as catherine and his father, who've got cancer , his father, who've got cancer, that is. you know, that's quite a big job he's got on his hands. and i'm just glad that they're going to be all together for the next couple you know, next couple of weeks, you know, to you know, to get to get to get, you know, to get to get some relief from all. >> did you actually find it in many ways disappointing that that kate had to resort to
1:18 pm
putting out a video message to explain what was going on? you know, it would have been a lot easier for her in many ways if she was going to release a statement for it to be a very simple , written statement. but simple, written statement. but the fact that she had to do a video message, that's something else . else. >> well, i don't think she had to do it. i think she wanted to do it. i think she wanted to shut the detractors up for a start off. but there were so much, not just in this country, but in america as well, you know? where is kate? what's happening? where is she , the happening? where is she, the thing is, as well, the royal family, like you and i and the rest of you know, your, the viewers and the listeners are entitled to privacy on her medical matters. and, you know, they came out and said she was having an abdominal surgery. she's now announced that they've discovered after that she's got canceh discovered after that she's got cancer. i think it was a right thing to do. and as i say, it, it explains an awful lot of what
1:19 pm
has been going on, behind the scenes . and i think as well, if scenes. and i think as well, if you get a diagnosis of cancer, whether you're high born or low born, you've got to process it. you've got to take it in. you've got so many things, you've got to work out, you know, how bad is it? well, absolutely. which is it? well, absolutely. which is why such a shame that is why it's such a shame that she had to. >> ended up feeling like she >> she ended up feeling like she had to use that very precious energy to do a video message. i mean, can you ever imagine the late queen having done doing that? oh, no , no, no, i mean, that? oh, no, no, no, i mean, we're now into a new royal family >> really. we're now into, i think we're now into a much more open royal family, but a start off. and the problem is, if you start telling us the people, look, this has happened , we will look, this has happened, we will then always demand, well, what has happened ? what is it has happened? what is it exactly? if people are still asking what type of cancer is, has the king got? what type of cancers has catherine got? but they entitled have that they are entitled to have that privacy. gone as far privacy. they have gone as far as they can. and i think it's
1:20 pm
right that she did what she did . right that she did what she did. it shut up. an awful lot of people. and, and i think we have to accept that this is how she wanted it done. and it's that simple , really. simple, really. >> and the positive side of it is the help it's giving to others, the comfort it's bringing to others. i mean, at the very end when she said, yeah, to everybody suffering with cancer, you are not alone. >> yeah. i mean, i think that was a wonderful message . it's was a wonderful message. it's very, very much like when the king, you know , said he'd got king, you know, said he'd got prostate cancer all the, you know, a number of blokes immediately went to their doctors and got checked out and it that matter for them. it raised that matter for them. and i think catherine saying, you're not alone when you battle canceh you're not alone when you battle cancer. and i think i think the figure is 1 in 3 are likely to catch cancer in this country. so it's not something that hits just a few people. it can hit everybody. and for her to, you know, spend a little bit of time, a few seconds just geeing
1:21 pm
up everybody saying you're not alone. i think it was marvellous . and i think an awful lot of people, especially people who are from are actually suffering from canceh are actually suffering from cancer, heart cancer, i think took great heart from that comment. >> yeah, absolutely . charles, as >> yeah, absolutely. charles, as always, thank you so much for talking to me. charles rea there, former royal correspondent for the sun. you're with me, pip tomson on gb news saturday. lots more to come on today's show. we're going to be joining our reporters across the country soon to hear, good, good wishes from members of the public, people who want to send their to best the princess of wales. all that and more very shortly here on

1:26 pm
you're very welcome. live just you're very welcome. i live just north of a nature reserve, ancient hill fort and prehistoric settlement on the edge of london. right through covid. i felt safe to walk in this wild but gentle space and i felt comforted by the proximity of this beautiful place and ancient neighbours. well, i'm sure lots of people can relate to what you say there. thanks for all your thoughts. do keep them coming in well, returning to the news about the princess of wales, it has of course sparked an outpouring of support from members of the public, from politicians around the world, from hollywood stars jamie lee curtis puts something on instagram earlier , offering her instagram earlier, offering her support. it has touched all of us, hasn't it? because cancer touches all of us. so i want to go to our reporters jack carson, who is in birmingham for us this afternoon , and jeff moody, who afternoon, and jeff moody, who is in devon. good afternoon to
1:27 pm
you both. i know you've each been to talking plenty of people. jeff, what have members of the public been saying to you ? >> well, 7- >> well, i ? >> well, i think there's a real sense of shock, really a sense of surprise. nobody knew that she was that ill. there had been speculation, of course, as we know in the media and of course in social media. but people here really had a sense that that she was getting better, that she was recovering. she was going to return to duties shortly after easter. so, first of all, a sense of shock. there's also a sense of shock. there's also a sense of shock. there's also a sense of anger that she's been put in the position where she's had to make that statement. a lot of people saying to me , lot of people saying to me, well, look, her health is a private matter. nobody wants their their personal health issues spattered across the newspapers, and that should apply to anybody, whether they're in the royal family or not. so very strong sense of not. so a very strong sense of anger coming from people and a lot of people saying to me, well , need to leave her , look, we need to leave her alone we've been down this alone now. we've been down this route before. look what happened
1:28 pm
with former princess of with the former princess of wales with diana back in 1997. and before we really should have learned lessons by now and we should be leaving her alone, particularly in the light of this diagnosis. we now know what's going on. we're now better informed than we were 24 hours ago. it's time to draw a line under it and move on. but a lot of people also saying that they're very supportive and very grateful the way that she grateful for the way that she broadcast that message, particularly at the end where she she moved the attention, the spotlight, if you were away from her, talking about other people that have received this diagnosis and a lot of people stopping me on the streets and saying, you know, it brought back memories my back memories of my own diagnosis. was saying diagnosis. a lady was saying that, know, had that, you know, she had a diagnosis of cancer 36 years ago and saying that , you know, it's and saying that, you know, it's still it's still with her. the feelings and the emotions that she had when she originally had that diagnosis. this kind of that diagnosis. and this kind of bnngs that diagnosis. and this kind of brings back. so a lot of brings it back. so a lot of people saying they're very grateful for way that she
1:29 pm
grateful for the way that she did and somebody said to did that. and somebody said to me, look, i'm not a royalist. i'm not a great fan of, of the royal family. but i did have a tear in my eye when at the end of her message, she said, look, whoever you are, if you have a diagnosis of cancer, if you're going through this, you are not alone. and the fact that she chose the very end of her message to open it out, as it were , to offer her support to were, to offer her support to people just like the king did when he had his diagnosis. and we all know how much that helped people to get their own diagnosis and help people to look after their own health. the positive effect that had . positive effect that it had. it's hoped now that her diagnosis will have the same . so diagnosis will have the same. so generally people wish her very well. angry at the way well. they're angry at the way this has come about, but they're very, very touched and moved. by the way that she's responded. >> yeah, unfortunately it is the age of social media. it has a lot to answer for. age of social media. it has a lot to answer for . jeff moody in lot to answer for. jeff moody in devon, thanks so let's devon, thanks so much. let's talk to jack carson, who's in my
1:30 pm
home city in birmingham. great to see you there this afternoon . to see you there this afternoon. jack in birmingham city centre. what have people been saying to you ? you? >> well i think that support that jeff was talking about there down on the in on the south—west certainly echoed here, in the midlands and in birmingham city centre, just from the people that i've been speaking to this morning. certainly the openness, from princess catherine about this diagnosis, certainly something which has touched a lot of people's hearts because it's not easy to even admit, you know , in easy to even admit, you know, in their own experiences. they've been telling me to their own family, maybe when people have been with that of been diagnosed with that kind of medical condition . so to admit medical condition. so to admit it in such a poignant and it in a such a poignant and heartfelt video like that, which has been, course, now has been, of course, now broadcasted , broadcast all over broadcasted, broadcast all over the world, certainly that feeling , of sympathy for her as feeling, of sympathy for her as she now undergoes this, this treatment, of course it's her
1:31 pm
family around her that also a lot of people here in birmingham who are sorry for she's got three very young children, her in the prince of, wales and in the prince of, of wales and so we understand, of course, why that released at that that video was released at that moment because of now the easter holidays children holidays and those children being able to, of course, spend time with both their mum and dad over this next couple of weeks . over this next couple of weeks. but take a listen to what a few people told me on the streets a little bit earlier on. >> jackie, private matter >> jackie, it's a private matter really, think the media really, and i think the media and press had have hounded and the press had have hounded her for the last three months. absolutely shocking. just her for the last three months. abshim ely shocking. just her for the last three months. abshim be.;hocking. just her for the last three months. abshim be. it's king. just her for the last three months. abshim be. it's ang. just her for the last three months. abshim be. it's a private just let him be. it's a private matter between , princess of matter between, princess of wales and the prince of wales. just leave it at that now. >> yeah, yeah, it's very shocking, really. and obviously, you it's in people you know, it's 1 in 2. people are getting now . so are getting cancer now. so i think all should be little think we all should be a little bit more respectful and just let her on with and, you her get on with it. and, you know, recover with her family her get on with it. and, you kn0\just recover with her family her get on with it. and, you kn0\just layover with her family her get on with it. and, you kn0\just lay off' with her family her get on with it. and, you kn0\just lay off herh her family her get on with it. and, you kn0\just lay off her a her family her get on with it. and, you kn0\just lay off her a littleimily and just lay off her a little bit. you know, i think she had a lot scrutiny the last lot of scrutiny over the last few weeks. >> so got few weeks. >>so >> so she's got young kids, she's family. i think
1:32 pm
she's got a family. i think that's probably the more upsetting about upsetting thing about everything. eye on everything. the public eye on things matter at things doesn't really matter at the it, well, we the minute, does it, well, we were but knew that were shocked, but knew that there right, there was something not right, you wouldn't keep things quiet for if it wasn't. if for that long if it wasn't. if there wasn't something that was wrong . wrong. >> there certainly that feeling , >> there certainly that feeling, that some people think that she was maybe forced into this decision and actually some people quite angry about that. she has had to be so public, but also, as jeff was reflecting as well, that gratefulness of being so open , as such, of course, so open, as such, of course, a poignant figure within our lives as the princess of wales because macmillan cancer support, you know, they say around 3 million people in the uk are diagnosed with cancer. somebody every 90s is diagnosed that message particularly as well. in the end of princess catherine's video yesterday saying that are yesterday saying that you are not alone, i'm sure. and just from the feeling that i've got from the feeling that i've got from people here in birmingham,
1:33 pm
that has certainly been very well received . yeah, jack, well received. yeah, jack, thanks much. thanks very much. >> much as i keep saying, >> and as much as i keep saying, i think it was disappointing that she felt that she had to resort to doing a video. it will have triggered lots of conversations. it might have prompted to go and prompted somebody to go and visit their doctor. it will have undoubtedly brought many people and families comfort. thank you very to you both. jack very much to you both. jack carson there and carson in birmingham there and jeff devon . you're with jeff moody in devon. you're with me, pip tomson on gb news saturday. good afternoon. very shortly we will be bringing you the latest on that deadly moscow attack, which occurred last night. vladimir putin has been speaking in the last hour. first, your latest news headunes first, your latest news headlines with karen armstrong . headlines with karen armstrong. >> it's 133. headlines with karen armstrong. >> it's133. i am karen armstrong . the king has praised armstrong. the king has praised princess kate's courage in speaking out about her treatment for cancer. her royal highness says taken time to explain

. channel. >> hello, i'm pip tomson. welcome back to gb news. saturday, at least 143 people now are believed to have been killed, and a further 140 wounded after they were gunned down in an attack at a concert hall in moscow last night, an affiliate of the islamic state group has claimed responsibility of the attack . that is vladimir of the attack. that is vladimir putin speaking about it in the last few moments, he says that all the suspects have been detained and that he claims the attackers tried to escape towards ukraine pain. that's what vladimir putin said within the last hour, and he claimed that all those responsible will be punished. let's talk about this with the terrorism and security journalist duncan garden. good afternoon to you, duncan. thanks for talking to me this afternoon , putin claiming this afternoon, putin claiming that they were trying to escape
1:41 pm
towards ukraine, these suspects that sort of claim which ukraine is absolutely denying any involvement . but that's quite involvement. but that's quite incendiary thing for him to say, isn't it? i mean, what effect an impact could that have on the course of this ongoing war? >> well, i think it was almost inevitable the minute that moscow was attacked in this way, that president putin was going to use it for his own propaganda ends.the to use it for his own propaganda ends. the question was how much, how far he was going to push that. and it's obviously taken him an hour or two, a little bit longer than that this morning to really make up his mind about how he was going to which direction he was going to take this . this. >> now, a lot of the evidence seems to be coming out across suggesting that these attackers were tajik passports, in were using tajik passports, in other words, that they had transited or had connections to tajikistan, which is on the afghan border and is a former
1:42 pm
soviet state. so it appears that putin has decided not to point the finger directly at ukraine, but in a in a kind of typical putin esque way, is saying, well, they must have been behind the attack. they must have helped inspire or instruct or or in this case, he's taken it only so far as to say they were helping them escape. yeah >> so could this then potentially give him an excuse to escalate this war? >> in terms of the ukrainian war, it's difficult in many ways to see how putin might escalate it further. there are a number of steps open to him in terms of, in increasing the draft to provide more soldiers to the front, it is possible he might do that, but unlikely, because he's he is very focused on maintaining a certain level of
1:43 pm
popularity and increasing the draft would limit that. but russia is already making progress on the, front in ukraine and is, taking, you know , small but significant, targets like avdiivka which, which was overrun, a few weeks ago. and and the ukrainians are talking about the difficulties in, in a shortage of shells and the lack of supplies, particularly coming from america, but also from europe, and so there are limitations. and we're coming, of course, into the fighting season as the ground dries out in ukraine, it's going to be easier for whichever side feels they have that opportunity to push over some of the existing front lines . front lines. >> now it's the islamic state group that says they could be behind the attack, or actually they say they did it. the united
1:44 pm
states said that is credible. why would islamic state target russia in this way ? russia in this way? >> well, that's that's the big question, isn't it? and i think that's the kind of question that people have been asking themselves, across the non—islamic world, if you like , non—islamic world, if you like, since isis and al—qaeda started attacking them. and the question that we've asked ourselves in britain when the attacks have come and in france , in america, come and in france, in america, madrid and elsewhere, russia has been targeted, probably for its support of attacks against isis. it's a backer of the assad regime in syria, and it also conducts attacks in the caucuses, which is a muslim majority area. most people will have heard of chechnya, but there are other, states down there, dagestan, ingushetia, where they've been launching operations recently , and those

operations recently, and those have been areas of unrest on the southern border of russia for quite a number of years , dating quite a number of years, dating back to the first and second chechen wars and the second one being one of the, one of the things that helped putin gain enormous popularity . so it's a enormous popularity. so it's a complicated global position. but isis in itself has not gone away. and i think in the west we tend to think, okay, it's been defeated, it's all done. but that's not the reality of the position. there's quite a few thousand and allied thousand fighters and allied tribes in syria and iraq and there's also a significant presence in afghanistan . varne presence in afghanistan. varne and we've certainly seen individuals in the uk trying to trying to travel out and join what's known as isis k, isis khorasan, which is their tum for afghanistan on, because they see that as the, as the coming power intelligence is suggesting that isis k has developed ambitions beyond its borders in recent months , however, it has largely months, however, it has largely
1:46 pm
been focused on attacking fellow muslims within afghanistan since its inception a couple of years ago. >> and what can we read into this , duncan, when it comes to this, duncan, when it comes to the timing of the attack, i mean, it was only last sunday that putin was re—elected for a new six year tum. washington says that they warned russia that there that there was intelligence to suggest an attack was likely . attack was likely. >> yes. so washington issued this warning both directly to the government in in moscow and also to its own citizens in moscow around march the 8th, so that's before the election . and that's before the election. and i think, you know, the timing is difficult to, to conjure with sometimes. sometimes it may have been , the planners intention to been, the planners intention to have launched the attack before the election, but actually, things didn't quite come together in the way they were
1:47 pm
expecting, wouldn't expecting, so i wouldn't read too much into that attack being just after the election . just after the election. terrorists are often quite a lot less organised than we give them credit for, but we certainly know that the plan was around before the election, and ukraine, as we were saying, is denying any involvement in the attack. >> but president zelenskyy, he will be quite worried today. will he not? >> i guess the natural reaction, of moscow to this might well be to fire some, heavy duty missiles into kyiv, they have been doing that this week anyway, which have largely been shot down by, american defence, american loan defences, but i would have thought ukraine can expect a barrage, a barrage in the coming days , the question
1:48 pm
the coming days, the question really is whether putin is actually going to, also try and address the problem of muslim extremism that he might have in his caucasus region and in those former soviet states, that border the country to the south. >> okay. really appreciate your analysis. this afternoon, terrorism and security journalist duncan gardham, thank you for talking to me. you're with me, pip tomson on gb news saturday. very shortly, we're going to be asking if living near a world heritage site really make you happier. do you live near there? stonehenge gb views at gb news. com what do you think of that theory? we're discussing
1:52 pm
heritage site make you a little perkier? does it brighten your mood ? because a study by mood? because a study by historic england and the culture department has found that the closer you live to heritage sites, the happier you're likely to be as day to day encounters with these spots boost well—being and life satisfaction. so what do we think about this? we're looking at stonehenge there, but there's also lots of quirky heritage sites as well, or sites such as watermills , churches. it's not watermills, churches. it's not necessarily the big stately homes, those grand, those grand houses or those monuments. well, joining me is health and wellbeing expert monica prize. monica, great to see you. great to see you. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> what's the link then between heritage sites and life satisfaction . explain it to us. satisfaction. explain it to us. >> well, you know i think it's wonderful they've done this research having just research because having just been castle, been to bodiam castle, for example , that's sussex. example, that's in sussex. that's it was so it's that's right. and it was so it's just it's makes you feel so good just it's makes you feel so good just to be outside, just to we've got so much history in, in
1:53 pm
this that i think we this country that i think we forget about it. i mean we've got easter coming up so everyone will getting their cars, will be getting in their cars, heading to south, you know, heading to the south, you know, heading to the south, you know, heading the beach or. heading down to the beach or. but to think but what we need to think about is come bit and is come inland a bit and research church, know, go on research church, you know, go on to this, you know, this interactive that they've interactive map that they've developed it's fascinating. >> well, there's so many of them. i mean, i think there's probably getting for on half a million them. and as we million of them. yes. and as we say, it's not. yes. it can be the, the places that come with with spaces. yeah. but it with green spaces. yeah. but it could also be, i don't know, a church, church or a monument or , church, church or a monument or, you know, a building, an old mill, for example. there's an old taxi rank. i read this is a heritage site, so i that's the bit i can't work out is why would an old taxi stand, which is classed as a heritage site ? is classed as a heritage site? what would that do to boost your mood? >> yeah. don't know about that one. yeah, but i think what it is, i think it's about going outside. i think i think it's about going outside, having a new experience. you know, we tend to forget just how much
1:54 pm
history, as i say, we've got in the uk. and we don't need to necessarily go elsewhere. we can just have a look, go on the map and have a look and see what's in your particular area and find out just a bit more about out just a little bit more about your like the taxi rank, your area, like the taxi rank, for example, you know, but there's loads of monuments and i was sussex and was looking on sussex and there's, so many and there's, there's so many and there's, there's so many and there is, there is, i think it said the search research said that it people more life that it gave people more life satisfaction, i believe satisfaction, and i believe that, you know, i speaking to some of my friends and they said it feel it just makes you feel wholesome. it makes you feel just to think about just alive. just to think about things, a different things, perhaps in a different perspective. you know, perspective. and, and you know, i think it's just one of those things we probably for things we probably take for granted . but now done granted. but now they've done this it'd be this research, it'd be interesting see more interesting to see whether more people actually to people will actually go on to the a look and see the map, have a look and see what's in their area, and, and actually it, because what actually visit it, because what i want to do is, is i want i want people to get in touch and tell me what is their heritage site near them? >> yes. us picture. in >> yes. send us a picture. in fact, one gentleman, i've lost his a picture

2:09 pm
developments ukraine it developments in ukraine when it comes that conflict because, comes to that conflict because, well, right now it has the status of the special military operation. and if the kremlin investigation finds out that it is either western intelligence services or ukrainian intelligence services behind the attack , it might change. you attack, it might change. you know what is interesting, actually, earlier this month, the us embassy issued a warning to citizens in russia, to its citizens in russia, saying that there might be this threat of possible terrorist threat of a possible terrorist attack in russia. and also, new york times sources are claiming that has actually passed that the cia has actually passed information to russian secret service about the upcoming attack. but we will have to see further details on that. >> what can you also tell us, alexi , about the victims, alexi, about the victims, because the death toll , it's because the death toll, it's going up and up and we're told that it's includes children. there are people , very badly there are people, very badly injured. they are still in hospital . and also, how are the hospital. and also, how are the people of russia reacting ? i people of russia reacting? i know people have been i've seen pictures of people queuing up to
2:10 pm
give blood and also many memorials appearing . memorials appearing. >> and the death toll now is 133 people with 140 people injured. and unfortunately, the death toll is rising. you know, it was a it was a concert. toll is rising. you know, it was a it was a concert . people toll is rising. you know, it was a it was a concert. people just went there with their loved ones, with their families, with their children to the concert and we've seen examples of heroism because, you know, there is this one story of a 25 year old man that particularly touched me. he he was a he was a disabled person , you know, he disabled person, you know, he was in a wheelchair, so he couldn't run. he invited his girlfriend to that concert because it was her favourite band. because it was her favourite band . and when the shooting band. and when the shooting started, he just shooted his girlfriend with his body. he closed her with his own body and he was shot dead. there are many other examples this . the other examples like this. the whole nation is mourning. as you said, russians queuing up to said, russians are queuing up to donate it's a national donate blood. it's a national tragedy and it's, it's hard. it's hard for everyone. but
2:11 pm
we'll handle i cannot imagine. >> and does it bring back memories of what happened in chechnya? wasn't it some two decades ago ? decades ago? >> that's true, because russia has not seen such a vicious terrorist attack since early 2000, when the anti—terrorist operation in chechnya was going just so we understand moscow, it's a very secure city. normally like any other day, we have, 20, 20 cameras, like on every corner. police and, we're just not used to this kind of like mass shooting. it came out of the blue. it's. it's such a shock for the whole nation. it's a shock. also tomorrow will be the national mourning and, etcetera . ezedi. but what is etcetera. ezedi. but what is worse, you know what what what is yet to come when the investigation finds out . and investigation finds out. and depending on what the investigation will find out. so this story will be developing unfortunately. >> yeah. absolutely and the
2:12 pm
concert venue , i mean it was concert venue, i mean it was friday night. is it a big venue? i understand it was absolutely packed with people and those people included children . people included children. >> it's a venue that can host up to 6000 people. yes. and it was almost fully packed. but you know , once again, russia has know, once again, russia has shown, an outstanding example of resilience because, for example , resilience because, for example, the taxi was free for like all moscow ites who were trying to flee the scene, emergency services as ambulances, like, everyone just came to the scene because there was fire. also, after shooting everyone , the after shooting everyone, the gunman, they set the whole scene on fire. so the firefighters had to come and extinguish the fire. it was it was a tough situation, but it has it is under control now. but just, how to deal with the victims. the death toll is
2:13 pm
rising, the president has promised that he will give all the support needed to the families of , those affected by families of, those affected by the tragedy. and oh, actually, hospitals, moscow hospitals have said now they have enough blood for everyone. and i just i just hope.i for everyone. and i just i just hope. i just hope it will be over soon, you know? >> gosh. absolutely. and just very finally, this, question about washington claim they alerted moscow to the to the potential attack, that something was afoot. and people will be asking questions, won't they, about why russia did not take that seriously . that seriously. >> well, you know, here in russia, people are asking questions , why didn't the cia questions, why didn't the cia give any particular information ? give any particular information? because so far the statement came from the russian secret service , fsb, saying that, yes, service, fsb, saying that, yes, indeed, cia has passed the information, but it didn't have any details. basically just said
2:14 pm
that there might be a terrorist attack at one of the russia's concerts. so of course they did take this information seriously, but unfortunately, the attack could've be prevented. >> yeah, russian journalist alexei bryusov, thank you so much for giving me that information today. and i know such a difficult day for the people of russia. there is a national day of mourning tomorrow . the princess of wales tomorrow. the princess of wales is revelation that she's undergoing treatment for cancer has sparked an outpouring of support and well—wishes from around the world, including this instagram post. this picture, which stated its love that gets us through, a mother's love that wants to protect her children at all cost. a mother's love who will allow the world to talk in order to protect her little ones. a mother's love who is now forced to speak out because the world forgot what it was to respect a family's privacy. my heart goes out to her royal highness and all the family. i hope you get the time and space

sussexes meghan and harry have reached out privately to the woman we're seeing sitting on the bench there and her husband, prince william, of course we don't know who spoke to whom. we don't know who spoke to whom. we don't know who spoke to whom. we don't know what was said. but if that did happen, it is significant because it could be the beginning of, renewing the bonds of brotherly love, and one might say a good first step, but about time, because it must be, by my calculation, getting on for two years since prince william. will we see on the right with his lovely family there , spoke to his younger there, spoke to his younger brother, and at one time they were extremely close. and it's worth remembering, pip, that, after the prince and princess of wales, as they now are married in 2011, prince harry could not have been closer to them. he almost lived in their apartment at kensington palace, and he was

cruel and terrible things, toxic things. >> but i mean, to be fair, there are there are some individuals, michael , are there are some individuals, michael, who, have sort of joined in all the speculation in recent weeks. where's kate, you know, joining in the conspiracy theories about this picture of her, that video of her who actually have come out and said, do you know i was wrong? do you know what? i was wrong? and i'm sorry. >> yes, there was a guardian journalist and he should. oh. in jones. yes i don't want to mention his name to give him pubuchy mention his name to give him publicity because he obviously loves it, but yes, you're right, and, i think nothing could have been more vile. you you don't attack people when they're down. you don't attack them anyway . you don't attack them anyway. but that is the sign of the bully to attack a weak person at their most vulnerable is reprehensible in the extreme. and those people should hang their heads in shame. pippa, it's awful. >> yeah, but it also just shows, doesn't it? the power of social

britain's election. channel. >> welcome back to gb news. saturday now, the number of people who've died in last night's attack near moscow has now risen to at least 133, believed to include children as well a further 140 people wounded . the attack happened at wounded. the attack happened at a packed concert hall near moscow last night, now an affiliate of the islamic state group has claimed responsibility for the attack, a claim that the united states says is credible. well, the russian president, vladimir putin, has broken his silence . he gave a 5.5 minute silence. he gave a 5.5 minute speech a little earlier, pledging that all those responsible would be punished . responsible would be punished. and he also said that all suspects had been detained and the attackers had tried to escape towards ukraine. then let's talk about this a little bit more with the former head of counter—terrorism at the mod. chip chapman. good afternoon to you, chip. thanks forjoining me this afternoon . let's just talk this afternoon. let's just talk about that. that last point,
2:42 pm
very significant that vladimir putin is claiming that the attackers tried to escape towards ukraine in ukraine, denies any involvement. is that pure propaganda from putin here? >> probably. so let's go back to the 7th of march, because that's when the warning given to the americans that extremist activity was going to take place . and they warned the american citizens to stay away from crowded places , what we would crowded places, what we would call under the uk counter—terrorist strategy . now, counter—terrorist strategy. now, on the 19th of march, vladimir putin actually said that these were provocative statements designed to intimidate and destabilise russian society. so if you have ignored things and your internal security processes have been seen to be flawed, you then start the process of narrative laundering and the bogeyman most likely you're most likely to go to is the ukrainians . now, it's worth ukrainians. now, it's worth saying, of course, that the attack in 2023 that killed the
2:43 pm
pro military blogger tatarsky was done by the national republican army, an anti—kremlin group . so in terms of group. so in terms of possibilities, ukrainians , i possibilities, ukrainians, i would say is a low probability, a group within russia, like the national republican army is a higher probability, but based on the american warning, i would say that jihadist violence is, is probably a higher probability from one of the, affiliates. i don't necessarily think it would be islamic state khorasan, because there is a what we call a wilayat or a province of the islamic state in southern russia. that is a thing called iskp.the russia. that is a thing called iskp. the islamic state, caucasus province. so in terms of the range of possibilities, i'd go for a sort of jihadist violence. but in terms of the human life, it's worth saying that now that 133 people have been killed, that exceeds the
2:44 pm
130 were killed in paris in 2015, and the higher one than that in european history in the last few , years is the 191 who last few, years is the 191 who were killed in madrid in 2004. so it is an absolute human tragedy. and we should never forget that even though we might criticise russia for its actions in ukraine, absolutely . in ukraine, absolutely. >> and why would jihadists be targeting russia for chip? >> well, there's a number of reasons for that. certainly in southern russia, the caucasus, they believe that they are muslim lands and need to be liberated from the russians by violence. also, of course , the violence. also, of course, the russians are still engaging jihadist groups in syria on behalf of the assad regime . so behalf of the assad regime. so you can you can take your pick from a number of issues there, the key thing from a russian perspective and a security perspective and a security perspective is then to ask yourself a number of questions today , why is another attack today, why is another attack coming? is there a network? is there a foreign link, what role
2:45 pm
did the community play and how does the attack fit into the overall level of violence? and again, violence in terms of terrorism in russia has been very low. recently. there were only three attacks in 2023, which killed two people and four attacks in 2022, which also killed two people. so this is an aberration from recent, russian violence, which peaked in terrorist terms in 2010. >> okay. former head of counterterrorism at the mod. chip chapman never enough time to talk to you, but thank you so much for bringing me your analysis thank you . next, analysis there. thank you. next, does living near a world heritage site make you feel a bit perkier? give your mood a boost , let me know gb views at boost, let me know gb views at gb news.com .we're boost, let me know gb views at gb news.com . we're discussing
