3:02 pm
gbnews.com/yoursay but before all of that is your headlines, sam francis . sam francis. >> martin, thank you and very good afternoon to you. it's just after 3:00. and the top stories from the newsroom . well, with from the newsroom. well, with just two weeks to go until polling day, rishi sunak is under more pressure after two conservative candidates have been accused of election betting. sir keir starmer is calling on the prime minister to withdraw his support . withdraw his support. >> this candidate should be suspended and it's very telling that rishi sunak has not already done that. if it was one of my candidates, they'd be gone and their feet would not have touched the floor. >> those comments from sir keir starmer come as laura saunders and her husband, who's the conservative campaign director now facing an investigation by the gambling commission . and so the gambling commission. and so is another candidate, craig williams, who's a former aide to
3:03 pm
the prime minister, rishi sunak, and a member of the prime minister's protection team, was also arrested last night over reported bets . as expected, the reported bets. as expected, the bank of england has held its interest rate at 5.25. that's the highest level since 2008. it's a blow for borrowers, but could be good news for those with savings, the bank says it needs more certainty, though, that inflation will stay low before considering a rate cut , before considering a rate cut, and that news today comes as the average first time buyer now needs to earn more than £60,000 to buy a property . that's to buy a property. that's according to a leading website. zoopla estimates that those trying to get onto the property ladder now need an income of nearly £15,000 more than they did five years ago . in other did five years ago. in other news today, a friend of missing british teenager jay slater has insisted that he would have tried to get help if he was in trouble. lucy law says the 19 year old, from lancashire rang her during their holiday in
3:04 pm
tenerife, admitting he didn't know where he was despite jay's mobile phone being on just 1% battery, he did manage to send her a photo of his location. his mother has now joined a team of mountain rescuers and local police on their search, which is now into its third day back here in the uk. michael gove says the tories are still capable of pulling off poll defying election victory, despite forecasts of a labour landslide. yougov data suggests the conservatives will slump to their lowest number of seats even their lowest number of seats ever, while labour could win a 200 seat advantage. it's also predicting significant gains for the lib dems, who could win 67 seats. that would be six times their result than 2019. but the community secretary, michael gove, told us earlier the race isn't yet over . isn't yet over. >> i want to make and am making whenever i can, that strong case and certainly when i am with conservative candidates out in the field, people are responding to the case that they are making. so i feel a sense of
3:05 pm
optimism about that. but at the same time, there are these opinion polls and you entirely understandably ask me about them. and so my point is, well, i'm not convinced they're right. i'm not convinced they're right. i really think it is possible that we can do significantly better than these polls indicate. but but in fairness, if you ask me a fair question about them, i've got to say, well, if they are accurate, then i fear the consequences. >> michael gove, they're speaking to us earlier this morning. well, in some health news, a further 45 cases of e coli have been reported in england , bringing the total to england, bringing the total to 256. but experts say the rate of new infections has now slowed . new infections has now slowed. the uk health security agency says the additional cases were recorded between june the 14th and june the 18th, bringing, as i said, that total number of confirmed cases to now more than 250. meanwhile health experts are suggesting the figure could still rise as nhs labs continue testing the food standards
3:06 pm
agency is also traced. that outbreak now to salad in pre—packaged sandwiches, with several supermarkets removing products from their shelves . products from their shelves. it's understood the post office has accidentally published the names and addresses of hundreds of wrongfully convicted sub—post masters online. the document, seen by the daily mail, masters online. the document, seen by the daily mail , shows seen by the daily mail, shows the details of those taking legal action after becoming a victim of the horizon it scandal. it's been taken down, though, since it was spotted in the post office, says it's now investigating how that document came to be published . emissions came to be published. emissions created by burning fossil fuels should be considered when granting planning permission for new drilling sites. that's according to a ruling today by the supreme court. sarah finch challenged a decision by surrey county council to allow the expansion of an oil well site in 2019. her appeal was challenged, though , by the council, which though, by the council, which argued that the law did not require the downstream effects of emissions to be considered.
3:07 pm
today's ruling overturns the original decision to grant planning permission . and planning permission. and finally, as martin mentioned, at the top of the programme, the prince of wales will be in frankfurt in germany later to support the england men's football team in tonight's clash with denmark at 5:00 in the euros. prince william, who is president of the fa, will join thousands of fans to cheer on gareth southgate's side in their second group stage match, with a win possible this evening, it would see england into the last 16 with a group game still to spare. that's the latest from the newsroom for now . your next the newsroom for now. your next update in half an hour. until then, you can sign up to gb news alerts. just scan the code on your screen or go to gb news. common alerts . common alerts. >> thank you sam. now we start with yet more turmoil for rishi sunak and the conservative party
3:08 pm
as their general election campaign continues to spectacularly unravel, two parliamentary candidates and the party's director of campaigning are now caught up in a betting scandal , and are now caught up in a betting scandal, and it are now caught up in a betting scandal , and it centres are now caught up in a betting scandal, and it centres on allegations of bets that were placed on the date of the general election. and i'm joined now in our studio by our political editor, chris hope to discuss this. chris what an unholy mess this entire campaign feels like. it's got the curse. it started badly when it rained on rishi sunak. things can only get wetter. the titanic picture they got the sinking feeling. the wheels came off at silverstone. now this , pardon silverstone. now this, pardon the pun, is the royal flush. what on earth are they thinking by betting on election dates with alleged insider information ? >> 7- >> yeah, 7_ >> yeah, well, ? >> yeah, well, you 7 >> yeah, well, you must miss out the d—day early withdrawal by by mr sunak from from northern france. i mean, when are you going to call an election 20 points behind. you've got to get everything working in the right order. it's six weeks to turn the polls around. nothing can go wrong. and things have repeatedly gone wrong of their
3:09 pm
own making. the d—day issue. the titanic issue is where you have an event maybe less clear, but this one you've got, reports here. you've got laura, laura saunders, she's a candidate in bristol north west, reportedly, involved in this betting on the date of general election. we don't know. she's no comment from her, but this this is these are the claims. yeah, the tories say we've been contacted by the gambling commission about a small number of individuals. this goes back to craig williams. he's also a candidate for the tory party at this election. he apologised, saying he made a huge error of judgement by having a flutter on the date of the july 4th, the fourth election. laura saunders is married to tony lee, the director of the entire tory campaign. he runs the entire campaign. he runs the entire campaign. he's now on a leave of absence and the cherry on the cake is as a close protection officer who looks after the pm, rishi sunak, and he's now been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, allegedly on the timing of the election. not surprisingly , the election. not surprisingly, the rivals to the tory party, the
3:10 pm
leaders of the parties, are making hay with this. here's keir starmer, this candidate should be suspended and it's very telling that rishi sunak has not already done that. >> if it was one of my candidates , they'd be gone and candidates, they'd be gone and their feet would not have touched the floor. there's a wider point here that you touch on, which is we've now had 14 years of chaos, of division, of politics being about self—entitlement and politics needs to be about service, about pubuc needs to be about service, about public service . public service. >> so sir keir starmer, the leader of the labour party, so ed davey, the leader of the liberal democrats, he's got involved to i think he's quite awful. >> the idea that you bet on something than, you know, the result that is immoral, it is illegal and i can't believe people at the top of the conservative party are doing this and have allowed this to happen. >> this is corruption, frankly, and it needs to have a heavy hand from the top. >> so i feel sorry for michael gove. he's the outgoing, housing
3:11 pm
secretary leaving parliament. he's doing his best for the party, even though he's not a candidate at the election. he's on the round this morning talking about housing policy on the back of appalling polls. we saw them yesterday. they dominated your show yesterday with a collapse in support , down with a collapse in support, down to 53 seats for the tories from 365, labour up to 560. and that's savanta telegraph poll. and earlier i spoke to him at a housing development in west london about both the polling and, crucially, the issue of betting on the election at the polls. >> and it's just a snapshot show a slightly further behind than that. but i'm convinced that as the arguments are heard by gb news voters, as they have a chance to reflect on what life would be like under keir starmer, with taxes higher, with risks to our national security, i believe that more people will decide that it would be completely wrong to hand keir starmer a blank check and they will vote conservative. >> there's an emerging betting scandal about the tory party on the date of the election. two candidates are allegedly being
3:12 pm
looked at by the gambling commission. a third individual in the party hq has withdrawn from frontline duties in terms of organising the campaign . how of organising the campaign. how is your party corrupt? no it is the case that obviously any decision by anyone to use inside information to bet on the election date, that is wrong. >> deeply regrettable, but i think the individuals concerned are now being investigated and until that process is concluded, i think it's difficult for me to say more because you've got to respect the integrity of the investigation . investigation. >> it's an astonishing thing to ask during a campaign trail. are you corrupt? but not only that, chris, i think you've got a fresh line for us. it may even have handed the labour party a competitive advantage. >> that's right. so when the election was called, it blindsided all of us. no one saw it coming, particularly his rivals . nigel farage it coming, particularly his rivals. nigel farage had no idea. and of course, he then declared the following day in a signed statement, it's too soon. i'm not organised. i can't stand in clacton or wherever and withdrew for a week and then, of course came back into the campaign when he realised the
3:13 pm
chaos in the tory party might give him an opportunity. and he urged you by people he met out and about. well, apparently labour may have got some help to gabriel pogrund, who is a very well regarded political journalist who's writing a book about labour, well plugged into the labour movement, he wrote in the labour movement, he wrote in the sunday times on may the 26th, after the election was called that a sudden surge in activity on the betting markets sealed the conviction of morgan mcsweeney, who was the overall strategist in the labour party, that a july poll would be called imminently . so this, this, this, imminently. so this, this, this, this betting and it's a tiny market. not many people bet on these things may have actually tipped off labour, i mean, and remove the advantage that rishi sunak thought he had about surprising labour. >> and some might say that's actually the biggest sin to have committed. you've let the opposition know that you're going up the ladder. absolutely astonishing stuff will stick with us. chris because i'm now joined by caroline slocock, who's the former private secretary at 10 downing street. welcome to the show , caroline,
3:14 pm
welcome to the show, caroline, may i ask you, this is an an almighty scandal. you worked for margaret thatcher? of course . margaret thatcher? of course. what would margaret thatcher have done had this kind of shenanigans been happening on her watch? >> well, i just don't think this kind of shenanigans would have been happening on her watch . been happening on her watch. >> you know, people were very, very focused. you know, the tone is set from the top and people were very, very focused on the job and they knew that all eyes were on, you know, were on us. everyone who worked at number 10 and around the prime minister, you know , parliamentary private you know, parliamentary private secretaries being one of them. and, i just can't really believe that this has happened. you know , i think it's speaks to the fact that that the tory party has lost its sort of ethical heart . and i think the big issue heart. and i think the big issue for the election and the reason why the tories are finding it hard to shift in the polls, is that people just don't trust them. they don't trust them to tell the truth. they don't trust them to play by the rules that them to play by the rules that the rest of us live by. you know, the covid, partygate, scandals were, you know, a deep
3:15 pm
expression of that. and this is another, you know, literally people not playing by the rules, you know, breaking the rules for personal gain. who are they working for, you know, are they working for, you know, are they working for, you know, are they working for us? are they working for their party or just for themselves? and i think the answer, you know, is that they're more concerned about their their own interests than they are about anyone else's . they are about anyone else's. and, you know, it's a very bad look , especially coming after, look, especially coming after, you know, the poorjudgement that was shown after the d—day celebrations by the prime minister himself and caroline. >> we just heard from chris hope there that the labour party machine saw this upsurge in activity, and that gave them a heads up that rishi sunak was planning to go up the ladder soonen planning to go up the ladder sooner. that in itself seems like a huge strategic error, and it's allowing sir keir starmer and ed davey today to take the moral high ground . nobody's moral high ground. nobody's talking about conservative policy. nobody's talked about the manifesto . so once again, the manifesto. so once again, it's about sleaze and corruption within the ranks . sir it's about sleaze and corruption within the ranks. sir keir starmer today said their feet wouldn't have touched the ground
3:16 pm
if they were. labour mps have put it to you again, caroline slocock if they were mps under maggie thatcher, what would she have done? just give him the boot straight away. >> i think so really though, obviously if you know someone is close to her, as her parliamentary private secretary had done this, you know, she might have felt a certain loyalty. it would have been perhaps too embarrassing. but you know, she she would have had a firm hand. and i think the problem for rishi sunak is he said, you know, he was going to ensure integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level of his government when he, you know, stood on the steps of number 10. it was his big promise. but he has hasn't enforced it . you know, when it's enforced it. you know, when it's come to all those difficult decisions, whether it's william wragg or mark menzies and now this, you know, he's he's not taking action. whereas labour have suspended a candidate already in this election. so, you know, he's looking weak . and you know, he's looking weak. and you know, he's looking weak. and you know, he's looking weak. and you know, the suspicion is that he doesn't really care about standards in public life . standards in public life. >> yes. i mean , chris openness, >> yes. i mean, chris openness, you know, with with martin, i
3:17 pm
mean , it does. when you were mean, it does. when you were running, you serve with margaret thatcher back in the 80s and 90s. i mean, did you ever hear of anybody ever allegedly betting on on information that they may have found out in the office? it just seems seems wrong. i think to the ordinary person, i you know, honestly, i just cannot believe it. >> and i was also working closely with lord young when he was running the election campaign, when he was secretary of state for employment, before i went to number 10. and, you know, these all of these things were very carefully guarded secrets. you know, no one in our office knew about it . and the office knew about it. and the idea of taking time out when something is serious as an election is happening to go and place a bet. i just find it quite extraordinary. and it's , quite extraordinary. and it's, you know, it's not just corrupt and unethical. i mean, if this turns out to be true, but it shows that people didn't have the eye on the their eye on the ball, on the prize. and, you know, labour obviously been monitoring these things because they were really sort of laser
3:18 pm
sharp about, you know, being ready. and the conservatives don't look ready to me, not even now, not even after, you know, four weeks of campaign thing. >> okay. caroline slocock , >> okay. caroline slocock, former private secretary at 10 downing street. thanks for your time . an astonishing state of time. an astonishing state of affairs. i just can't believe that maggie thatcher would ever have tolerated anything like this . thanks have tolerated anything like this. thanks forjoining us have tolerated anything like this . thanks forjoining us on this. thanks for joining us on the show. thanks for your time . the show. thanks for your time. now moving on. the bank of england held interest rates for the seventh time in a row today. and of course, stubbornly high interest rates make an impact on households across the country. gb news reporter anna o'reilly has been getting reaction in hull . hull. >> the interest rate better for me. >> i get more money in my savings per month, whatnot. but if you're getting a mortgage like, say, my age, higher interest rate, you're going to be paying higher payments on it. so yeah, i think it's completely wrong. it's the banks making money and nothing more than that. you know, if they didn't want to make money, then they'd lower them and look after people . the government aren't making them drop the rates . and now
3:19 pm
them drop the rates. and now it's been up to six months and i'm still trying to get trying to sell the house. and everyone's in the same boat because of interest rates. so something needs to happen to enable because i suppose it's affecting the buyers a lot more, but the sellers are also feeling it as well. so that's my stance on it at the minute. yeah >> great up there from anna. and also thank you to you, chris hope and we'll have much more of you throughout the show of course. but before that, it's time for our giveaway now and your chance to win over £16,000 worth of prizes. that's 15 grand tax free cash and a whole host of summer treats on top. now it could all be yours. we've got to be in it to win it. here's all the details that you need. >> don't miss out on your chance to win our summer spectacular and have we got a prize for you? first, there's a totally tax free £15,000 in cash to make your summer spectacular. spend that extra cash however you like. you'll also win a brand new iphone apple airpods. and if that wasn't enough, a £500 voucher to spend at your favourite uk attraction so you can enjoy amazing days out this

3:21 pm
3:22 pm
3:23 pm
3:24 pm
welcome back. your time is 324. i'm martin daubney. welcome back. your time is 324. i'm martin daubney . this is gb i'm martin daubney. this is gb news now. later this hour, we'll look ahead to england's euro 2024 game against denmark. but before that to the latest on jay slater. the 19 year old from lancashire who's gone missing in tenerife and his mother, says the continued search for her son is an absolute living nightmare. and jay was last heard from on monday morning after telling friends he'd take the 11 hour walk back to his hotel . friends he'd take the 11 hour walk back to his hotel. i'm joined in the studio by our reporter charlie peters. charlie a distressing case, one that's gripping the nation. what's the latest ? latest? >> well, you've just heard that jay slater's mother has described this as a living nightmare. well, jay's best friend lucy, who's on the island, has said that she doesn't believe that the spanish police are doing enough in this case. and she has urged in the last few hours for british police to fly out to the canary islands to support this search
3:25 pm
on tenerife. she said that they're asking many of the same questions they originally asked on monday, when lucy first reported jay as missing, and that also they haven't yet facilitated a translator for many of the spanish speaking police officers and the civil guard search and rescue teams to interact more smoothly with lucy. so quite a bold call to ask for the british to come and support this operation. now, she says that the last she heard from him was at 815, when jay had 1% battery on his phone . he had 1% battery on his phone. he said at the time on the phone that he he had a cut on his leg from a cactus and as you said, he was going to make an 11 hour walk towards their accommodation . now on the timeline, as we understand it, he was at the energy festival with his friends on sunday evening, last seen in a snapchat at around 8:45 pm, andifs a snapchat at around 8:45 pm, and it's understood that he left the festival with two others to go to an undisclosed location, possibly for a party after the party. now, what's been said about that is that those two
3:26 pm
individuals who are with jay potentially the last people to have seen him, have now left the island. we're just learning that in the last few hours, and they've left, according to lucy, without the police on tenerife speaking to them. so quite a critical piece of information right now. the search continues in northwest tenerife , in the in northwest tenerife, in the rural dittaino area. that's where his phone signal was last seen at 850 on monday morning. now, since tuesday at 1:45 pm, that's when the spanish civil guard on tenerife were activated to support this case, including a helicopter, drones , sniffer a helicopter, drones, sniffer dogs and four separate units of specialist mountain rescue teams. today's been described as a critical day in that search, and it continues as john eberechi eze. >> thank you for that update. i'm now joined by charlie hedges, who's a missing persons experts. charlie welcome to the show. you've heard all the evidence that we have laid out was there by charlie peters . is was there by charlie peters. is that allegation from the friend fair? do you believe that the
3:27 pm
spanish authorities aren't doing enough? and is there any capacity in cases like this for the british police to go abroad to assist ? to assist? >> it's difficult to say just how well the investigation is being conducted. i'm not there. i wouldn't like to speculate . so i wouldn't like to speculate. so that's a difficult question to answer. certainly there is a precedent for uk police going out to support these sorts of things, but there are a number of legal, legal loopholes to jump of legal, legal loopholes to jump through before they get there, but it's not unheard of for sure. >> and in terms of the response, the drones, the dogs , the ground the drones, the dogs, the ground units, again, echoes of michael mosley , this is standard mosley, this is standard procedure. what would you be doing in circumstances like this? now, knowing the evidence, the last locations, the phone going dead, that's a crucial piece of information. the lack of the ability to trace somebody at that point . what would be at that point. what would be your moves if you were conducting this investigation? charlie >> well, there are two facets.
3:28 pm
one is the physical search of the ground using the resources that they have, and making sure that they have, and making sure thatis that they have, and making sure that is properly structured and they're looking in the right areas and the other side is answering some of the questions that have been raised in your earlier report about the two people who allegedly took jay away from the party and why they've left the island. what's going on there? where did they take him, we've heard stuff about him getting on, possibly getting on a bus or not getting on a bus. all these things are critical to understand what's going on, you need to know the individual who's gone missing and his circumstances and what's caused him to go missing, to delve into that and then try and put an investigation , a search put an investigation, a search strategy together based on that information . information. >> and surely, as a matter of urgency, those two individuals, they are absolutely key in this investigation . if they are some investigation. if they are some of the last people that may have seen him before, his disappearance, they must be tracked down and questioned as a matter of urgency . surely? matter of urgency. surely? >> absolutely, yes. i mean, they
3:29 pm
are critical to this, to understand it may be perfectly innocent , understand it may be perfectly innocent, but are there? there are unanswered questions which need to be looked at to understand what's gone on. why did he go with them? where did they go to, and why have they left the island as that planned? or is it a rather sudden? we need to know those answers . need to know those answers. >> and in terms of the terrain this time of year , i mean, i've this time of year, i mean, i've been to tenerife. it's a very unforgiving terrain, incredibly hot this time of year. again, echoes of the michael mosley case, you'd hope that there's some kind of shelter or something, because it's incredibly unforgiving out there i >> absolutely. it's very rugged terrain . need to refresh terrain. need to refresh yourself with water regularly . yourself with water regularly. obviously, food is another consideration. shelter and make, and it has a devastating impact on the body while you're, physically exerting yourself and so we need to, to, to search urgently to try and find him and locate him as soon as possible . locate him as soon as possible. >> okay. well, charlie hedges, who's a missing persons expert,
3:30 pm
thank you for your expertise. and also thanks again to charlie peters for joining me and also thanks again to charlie peters forjoining me here in the studio. we'll have a full update on this story throughout the show as we get them. there's lots more still to come between now and 4:00 and find out why just stop oil might have dropped a massive clanger when they sprayed orange paint onto two planes at stansted airport this morning. the numpties got the wrong planes. but first, here's your latest news headlines with sam francis . sam francis. >> martin, thank you very much . >> martin, thank you very much. good afternoon to you. it's just after 3:30. and the top story from the newsroom is that government minister michael gove has said he's almost lost for words after two conservative candidates have been accused of election betting. here's what the community secretary had to say . say. >> is the case that obviously any decision by anyone to use inside information to bet on the election date, that is wrong,
3:31 pm
deeply regrettable , but i think deeply regrettable, but i think the individuals concerned are now being investigated. and until that process is concluded, i think it's difficult for me to say more . say more. >> well, those comments from michael gove come as laura saunders and her husband, who's the tories campaign director , the tories campaign director, and another candidate, craig williams, face investigations by the gambling commission. sir keir starmer has also commented saying that labour wouldn't tolerate that kind of behaviour . tolerate that kind of behaviour. >> this candidate should be suspended and it's very telling that rishi sunak has not already done that. if it was one of my candidates, they'd be gone and their feet would not have touched the floor. >> as expected, the bank of england has held its interest rate at 5.25% today. that's the highest level since 2008. but it's a blow for borrowers, although it could be good news for those with savings , the bank for those with savings, the bank says it needs more certainty that inflation will stay low before considering a rate cut. and it comes as figures suggest
3:32 pm

>> this is gb news and we are britain's election channel. >> this vote may seem to be about the politicians and the media, but it's actually about you. >> we won't forget that. join us up and down the country as we follow every moment together. >> more than ever, it's important to hear all sides as you make your decision in the run up to polling day. >> this is gb news, the people's channel >> this is gb news, the people's channel, britain's election . channel. >> welcome back. you time is 337. i'm martin daubney. this is gb news. now later in the show, i'll tell you how emmanuel macron could be about to bring the european union to the brink of total collapse. but before that, let's get more from the labour party. now, we've already
3:38 pm
heard sir keir starmer's scathing comments about the betting scandal that's enveloping the tories , and today enveloping the tories, and today labour leader has been in north yorkshire pledging to construct 1.5 million homes in england over the course of the next parliament as part of a wider promise to get britain building again. i'm joined now by our political correspondent olivia utley, who's on the campaign trail with the labour party. olivia, we should be talking about labour's housing policy. we should be scrutinising their tax policy. we should be looking at their propositions on the gender pay gap instead. once again, the tories have shot themselves in the foot. there's no scrutiny whatsoever for sir keir starmer. and once again, the tory party seem to be doing sir keir starmer's bidding for him . him. >> well, absolutely. with a scandal after scandal for the conservative party, multiple candidates now mired in this better issue, the labour party has managed to be able to talk
3:39 pm
about whatever it wants to talk about. this morning, keir starmer was asked mostly about reaction to the conservatives issues . then he talks about his issues. then he talks about his housing policy. it's a big, bold , brave ambition and could certainly help cement his vote among younger voters who are deeply worried about the housing crisis up and down the country. i think what will be really interesting is what will happen with this promise. once keir starmer wins the election, because historically, labour have been able to make these big, bold promises about building houses because their constituencies are much more urban and the areas where people really object to house building are the suburbs and more rural areas where people are really worried about, you know, their views being ruined in some cases or very reasonably , they're or very reasonably, they're worried about their, services, their schools, their gp's , etc. their schools, their gp's, etc. becoming overwhelmed in big cities. that's not quite so much of a problem. but the problem is for keir starmer that if he does get the sort of landslide victory that we're now expecting, all sorts of those nimby ish constituencies, if we can call them that, those
3:40 pm
suburban constituencies, rural constituencies which normally belong to the conservatives, will switch over to labour, and you could end up in a situation where labour is having exactly the same problems that the tories are having at the moment, not really being able to promise to build because they know there will be such huge opposition from their constituents . it's we from their constituents. it's we asked keir starmer about it a little earlier and this is what he had to say. >> we have to protect those in rented accommodation . they're rented accommodation. they're paying rented accommodation. they're paying very high rents a lot of the time, and the conditions aren't what they should be. and that's why we've set out our package of measures this morning, including measures to limit the amount that landlords can sort of get people to compete against each other , to compete against each other, to put the rent up and up and up and the money that people have to put down by way of a deposit in the first place. but it is important that that's alongside the housebuilding. we need 1.5 million houses because more houses mean less pressure on the rented market. that will require tough decisions on planning . tough decisions on planning. >> well, he sounds like he has a
3:41 pm
big, bold plan there, but let's see what happens when he gets into government and starts getting the letters that the tories have been getting for the last 14 years, from angry constituents and suburbs and rural rural areas, towns, smaller towns across the country, we might see a bit of a change of tune as you say, martin, with this, with the labour party expecting this huge victory in the general election, you would think that two weeks before we would be talking, we would be robust , scrutinising would be robust, scrutinising their tax policy, etc. but at their tax policy, etc. but at the moment the conservatives are making the headlines. they are so mired in scandal that that's all we can really talk about. leaving keir starmer free to talk about whatever he wants . talk about whatever he wants. >> olivia utley. live from york, thank you very much. and your cements the vote with housing pun wasn't wasted on me. thank you very much. nicely done olivia utley great stuff. now moving on. the liberal democrats have pledged to spend £300 million over the next parliament to fill 1.2 million potholes every year . it to fill 1.2 million potholes every year. it can take councils
3:42 pm
up to 18 months to repair some of those potholes. >> we're going to reallocate money from the roads budget that's planned for the next parliament. 300 million, so we can really deal with the potholes, which are such a menace and actually costing motorists a huge amount of money because they damage their cars in these potholes. and so reallocating money looks like the right thing to do in tight times. there are a whole set of road projects that we would look at. there's one in liverpool, for example, that's scheduled for example, that's scheduled for something like 335 million. people think it's very poor value for money. so by being really prudent, reallocating money from the roads budget, we could tackle the pothole epidemic in our country. >> now, i've listened to ed davey talk about potholes isn't exciting enough for you. let's just over an hour to go before england take on denmark in euro 2024. isjude england take on denmark in euro 2024. is jude bellingham england take on denmark in euro 2024. isjude bellingham going 2024. is jude bellingham going to take the three lions one step closer to our first major trophy? and can you believe it, 58 long, painful years. i'm

3:46 pm
welcome back. it's 346. i'm martin daubney on gb news now at 4:00. i'll have the latest on the tory betting scandal . sir i'll have the latest on the tory betting scandal. sir keir starmer criticises rishi sunak's weak response to the crisis. but before that, to what could be a massive, massive mistake by just stop oil this morning, activists, as you can see on your screens, broke into stansted airport by angle, grinding through a fence and sprayed orange paint onto two planes. two women have since been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and interference with the use of national infrastructure . the protest infrastructure. the protest group said later on social media that taylor swifts jet is parked there. however essex police has
3:47 pm
been told by stansted airport that taylor swift's plane is not there. got the wrong plane lads . there. got the wrong plane lads. now, of course, the incident happened less than 24 hours after just stop oil also attacked stone henge, as you can see on your screen, which caused global outrage . let's cross live global outrage. let's cross live now to stonehenge and speak to our south west of england reporter, jeff moody. geoff, welcome to the show. on the roadside there on the approach to stonehenge. so a double a double header, a double whammy. first stonehenge, now stansted . first stonehenge, now stansted. tell us more . tell us more. >> absolutely. well, the two people that were arrested here at stonehenge yesterday have this morning been released on bail. wiltshire police are saying that they want a little bit more time. that buys them a little bit more time to investigate exactly what happened. they're working very closely with english heritage. engush closely with english heritage. english heritage this morning has said we have now repaired all the damage to the stones. everything is back to normal.
3:48 pm
what i think is very interesting that that just stop oil said, look , this is a fuss about look, this is a fuss about nothing. as soon as there's a bit of rain , then it'll wash bit of rain, then it'll wash away the paint because it's only used with with bit of corn flour. it's nothing serious, but engush flour. it's nothing serious, but english heritage are saying actually, the rain is the last thing you need because when you mix water with corn flour, it gets very starchy, it gets very sticky, it gets very solid . and sticky, it gets very solid. and that would cause a lot more damage to the stones. so they've been they've been at it with hand grinders this morning to try and to, to make the stones. well again to make the stones back to normal again. and they've managed to do that because we haven't had any rain other than that we might have beenin other than that we might have been in a bit of trouble. you can see they're just getting ready for the summer solstice. the portaloos have been put in place in the last couple of hours. they're expecting around 5000 people here this evening to watch the sun set on the longest day of the year, and then to hang around overnight for those those short hours to watch the
3:49 pm
sun come up again. but as you said , there's also this incident said, there's also this incident that happened at stansted airport. two people arrested there trying to get a hold of taylor swift's jet. but as we've just heard, the jet wasn't even there. now, just stop oil have said , why are they actually said, why are they actually doing this? and the reason they're doing this seems to have changed a little bit. they always said that they wanted no new oil and gas licences . that new oil and gas licences. that was what they were campaigning about. but the labour government, the labour government, the labour government, the labour party government, the labour party has said if they get into government in next month, they won't be introducing any more of those, any more of those licences . so any more of those licences. so just stop oil have said, okay, they accept that those licences might not happen if there's a labour government, but they now want a commitment for us to stop using oil and gas altogether , in using oil and gas altogether, in any shape or form , by 2030. any shape or form, by 2030. that's only six years. >> jeff moody these people, i
3:50 pm
think, have as much common sense as those sheep wandering around behind you. jeff, thanks for joining us. always a delight to have you on the show. now they're just over an hour to go before england are back in action at euro 2024. they're taking on denmark in frankfurt and jude bellingham scored as england beat serbia one nil in a nervy encounter on sunday. and their performance was widely criticised. certainly was in my household. but manager gareth southgate was warned that denmark warned denmark that england will be much better this evening. >> know that we can play better than we did the other day, but i thought the players, in what is an incredibly pressurised moment, started the game exceptionally well and defended brilliantly throughout the whole game, and i think they'll be better for that game. i think they'll be better for having a game under their belt.
3:51 pm
>> well, there we go. that's gareth ahead of the big encounter. now i'll watch the match in in nottingham on sunday with my dad. and our reporter will hollis is at a fan zone right now in nottingham. will the big build up begins the boozy build up, by the looks of it, what's the mood there in nottingham ? nottingham? >> yes, well, football fever is officially hitting the uk right now, but obviously a lot of people haven't finished work yet. kick off isn't until 5:00, but i'm told that in this fantastic fan zone at binks yard, 500 people will be enjoying england's group c clash against denmark in just a few hours. i'm told as well that this screen over here is the biggest outdoor screen to watch the football on, not just here in nottingham but also in the east midlands. in nottingham but also in the east midlands . and a lot of east midlands. and a lot of people have gotten out of work early. some of them may have even taken the day off. some people are fortunate enough to be retired , like sharon and les be retired, like sharon and les here, who are watching the football jul, here at the fan zone, here at brink's yard.
3:52 pm
sharon what does it mean to you getting to watch england in the euros for 2024? >> everything. everything. yeah. great to be here. really excited. i'm sure we can do it. we're going to win. yeah definitely. >> les the atmosphere is only just starting. but what does it mean getting to watch it here in a fan zone rather than, let's say the pub or at home? >> well, it's my first time, so i'm looking forward to it. it's really good so far. >> why did you want to come to this one rather than sitting at home? maybe with a few cans? why a fan zone for this game? >> there's a group of us of seven, so we're all getting together and, hopefully having a good time and a win. >> and we did win against serbia, but it was quite a tight one. what do you think, gareth southgate needs to do to make this one a little bit of an easier game ? easier game? >> i don't know, i think he's got to change it around a little bit. he tends to be a bit safe, but to me foden needs to play in a different position . i would a different position. i would put i don't know, it's tough because we'll leave those ones
3:53 pm
to gareth southgate. >> sharon, what do you think? how do you think gareth southgate has done so far in this competition? >> i think he's doing all right, but i think we need to be more aggressive and a bit more ruthless, and we need to close the opposition down a lot quicker than what we were doing against serbia. definitely. lots of people here. >> really good to see that. there's actually a lot of women here as well. what does it mean to have so many women coming out to have so many women coming out to watch england play? >> oh, great, because i support the women's teams anyway. i support the forest, notts forest women and also england women anyway. so both you know. yeah. it's great. absolutely great. >> brilliant. and still a little bit of time till the kick off. but we know that people are really getting into the spirit here at binks yard in nottingham i >> -- >> that's it. forest fans, england fans. my kind of people. will hollis looks absolutely fantastic . not remotely jealous fantastic. not remotely jealous that i'm stuck in the studio , that i'm stuck in the studio, but look, i'm here to serve. can't wait for that. and look, they've done a fantastic job there. nottingham in that fan zone. a couple of people who are working on that fantastic stuff. hope they have a great time

scandal about the tory party on the date of the election . two the date of the election. two candidates are allegedly being looked at by the gambling commission , and a third commission, and a third individual in the party hq has withdrawn from frontline duties. in terms of organising the campaign is your party corrupt? >> no, it is the case that obviously any decision by anyone to use inside information to bet on the election date that is wrong. deeply regrettable, but i think the individuals concerned are now being investigated and until that process is concluded, i think it's difficult for me to say more because you've got to respect the integrity of the investigation . investigation. >> well, i'm also joining us studio now by the former labour mp, shaun simon. shaun, you were looking at all of that with, with a look of glee in your eyes. you can't you can't believe your luck. i mean, there's no scrutiny whatsoever of anything sir keir starmer is throwing out there. we're simply talking about debacle after debacle , scandal after scandal. debacle, scandal after scandal. what on earth is going on? you guys must be loving it. >> well, you can see keir
4:13 pm
starmer and ed davey. you can see that they really are loving it. although to be honest, they're i mean they're hamming it up a bit aren't they, that they're there to listen to them talk. you'd think this was the, you know, the worst and most serious thing that had ever happenedin serious thing that had ever happened in the world. i mean, it's a long way from the worst thing that the conservatives have done in the last 14 years. clearly, if people have broken the law , then that needs to be the law, then that needs to be investigated and the law needs to take its course. but you know, a little bit of dodgy betting, actually, if we weren't in the middle of a general election campaign, i wonder how much people would care . much people would care. >> yeah, but but sean, a great point that chris hope came up with earlier is that there was activity , sure signs that the activity, sure signs that the labour party actually saw this increase in betting, and it may have tipped them off. >> that's right. we're seeing reporting from, jim waterson at the guardian today. he's looked at the betfair market. so that's one of the many people firms you can bet with. he has found there was a big surge in betting on the july date for the election . the july date for the election. on the day before, it was called
4:14 pm
by rishi sunak on the on the 22nd, i think it was of may. so a big surge on the 21st of may, there's always been bets here and there. it's what's called a novelty market in a betting betting world. but that the scale of that jump in bets again, thousands of pounds and probably a few hundred here and there by people just shows that someone knew something and people were getting rich. it seems on quite an accurate bet about the date of the election and the amount of money it's ran about just shy of £6,000, but it's a big jump. >> then if we've got that graphic, we can show it just jumps right up the day before the election, which does suggest that this is bigger than just a couple of people betting. this seems to be more widespread . and seems to be more widespread. and also, chris, you have the information that the labour party strategic analysts saw this and it tipped them off that they saw the election campaign itself coming. >> just just briefly on that. martin. yeah, because the date of the election is a surprise. and that's why you hold that backif and that's why you hold that back if you're the pm, because then you can surprise your opponents. and it did alarm
4:15 pm
nigel farage, who said, i can't stand this too quick. and it spooked the opponents. but gabriel pogrund, who's a well regarded journalist at sunday times, he's saying that he that morgan mcsweeney, who's this official driving the strategy for keir starmer, noticed a jump in the betting markets in for a july poll and that tipped labour off that the election announcement was coming . so it's announcement was coming. so it's not only a bad look, but it actually damaged the advantage the tories had at the beginning by tipping off labour. >> so, so , sean, when we look at >> so, so, sean, when we look at it in that context, it's not just a few quid being fluttered on election day if it's tipping off your opponent. so you lose the element of surprise, and if it's even bigger , it hands your it's even bigger, it hands your media opponents at the guardian yet more sticks to beat you with. this scandal seems to be getting bigger and bigger. >> i mean , don't get me wrong, >> i mean, don't get me wrong, i'm not saying it's a good idea. i'm not saying it's a good idea. i'm not saying there are no consequences, absolutely. >> it should never have happened. what? >> what it really shows me, though, are just, like, so much across the rest of this campaign is that their minds are just not
4:16 pm
on it. are they like these tories? they're on the beach. they're somewhere else . even they're somewhere else. even when you look at rishi sunak, he doesn't. >> he looks like a man who knows that he's lost. >> he looks like a man who knows that he's lost . you can't tell that he's lost. you can't tell whether whether he's going to burst into tears or start shouting at somebody, but he doesn't look like a like a prime minister normally looks on the campaign trail. >> i mean, i've been with him quite a lot in close quarters in my job, covering the campaign for for the the gb news. he is keen and enthusiastic and bouncy and wants to convince he knows his lines. he's getting them out there. i think i think, you know, when you see him close to you think, well, he is believing himself. i wonder whether he's reading the runes, though, in the polls and despairing. but we don't get that impression with him. >> and what do you think about the lack of strong arm discipline? we spoke to caroline slocock earlier on. she's a former private secretary to downing street , to maggie downing street, to maggie thatcher and echoing actually what sir keir starmer said, she said in maggie's day, these people that have been booted straight out. so keir starmer
4:17 pm
said today they'd be straight out before the feet touch the ground. so it's a further test of rishi sunak's premiership. if he's seen to go soft, if he's seen not to act. but again, it's just a pointless and a needless distraction, isn't it? >> all of this, it's been like this for two years now, hasn't it? the tory party has been at war with itself. there's been no discipline. it's been to be fair to rishi sunak. it's been impossible for him to impose discipline on such a fractured party. and now that now that they see the, the government coming to an end, it's absolute chaos and it's every man and woman for themselves and just do whatever they feel like. >> sean, you were a labour mp from 2001 to 2010. the back end of those two big majorities for labour party, the tories are warning about the dangers of a mega majority, a super majority from the from the labour party. is that a worry? i mean , is is that a worry? i mean, is there an arrogance in government when you have so many mps and there's no opposition , you can there's no opposition, you can do what you like? >> i'm not worried about that. for one thing, i don't believe
4:18 pm
the polls that say that labour will have a, you know, 550 mps or whatever, it seems very likely they'll have a comfortable majority, but it's not going to be double the blair majority. our system just doesn't work like that. but the real the real danger is when governments are in power for too long and they become complacent. that's and they run out of steam and they run out of the discipline that we were talking about. i'm afraid that happens to all governments in power over time. >> well, michael gove today, though, was saying that we're in danger of a forever government. and that is because sir keir starmer plans to get in and lower the voting age to 16. intimations of cooking the books, ensuring that young people vote for the labour party, that supermajority could drag on forever. is that really healthy for democracy? well under the conservatives, there are 7 million low income people in the united kingdom not on the electoral register and don't get to vote. >> so i think perhaps we should fix that before we worry about the other. >> okay. thank you very much. we have to move on there. thank you
4:19 pm

4:21 pm
4:22 pm
4:23 pm
4:24 pm
welcome back. it's 424. i'm martin daubney. this is gb news. now. later this hour, we'll look ahead to england's euro 2024 group game against denmark. gareth southgate has named the same team that started sunday's win over serbia . now to the win over serbia. now to the latest on jay slater. the 19 year old from lancashire who's gone missing in tenerife and his mother, says the continued search for her son is an absolute living nightmare. and jay was last heard from on monday morning after telling friends he'd take the 11 hour walk back to his hotel. and we had fresh , fresh information had fresh, fresh information came in in the past hour that the two individuals who were last seen with the missing lad, jay, they've been free to leave the island. absolutely astonishing development. it's just unbelievable that somebody can be allowed to leave an
4:25 pm
island without even being questioned by the police. and of course, they will be now the top targets for interviews for the police when that story moves on. and now i'm joined in the studio to take the story forward by. i know we're moving on to. i'm joined now by mike neville , joined now by mike neville, who's the former head of lambeth missing persons unit. mike welcome to the show. so mike's this astonishing piece of information that came out in the last hour or so is that the two individuals last believed to be with jay slater, have since been allowed to leave the island without the police even questioning them. that would seem to be an astonishing oversight, and they would seem now surely to be the premium targets of the ongoing investigation . investigation. >> well, as i understand it, they were phoned by his, his friend, the lady he was staying with, and she spoke to them. >> and i do find it quite amazing that the police haven't
4:26 pm
interviewed them and taken a formal witness statement so they can either be discounted from the enquiry or if they can, be treated as some kind of suspects. >> but we do know that when there's all sorts of rumours been said that he's, you know, been said that he's, you know, been kidnapped and the like, but the last phone call he made, of course , he said he was walking, course, he said he was walking, he had 1% on his battery and he needed a drink. >> so he didn't sound like he was in any kind of, danger from any other person, but you would think that the police would take formal statements from these people, check the phones and see if he'd made any contact with them. so it does seem, a bad decision to just allow them to leave without any formal evidence being taken from them . evidence being taken from them. >> and, mike, there has been criticism of the spanish police activity on tenerife. what they've been doing in terms of their investigation. for a friend of jay slater's also, intimations that the british police should step up and perhaps go out there and get
4:27 pm
involved . now, as the former involved. now, as the former head of lambeth missing persons unit . is that possible? can unit. is that possible? can british police get involved in foreign investigations and get out there and try their best to help ? help? >> well, yes you can. >> well, yes you can. >> i mean, i helped i've been out to a different countries. i've been out to germany in particular helping them. but the request must come from the spanish authorities . the british spanish authorities. the british police can't simply storm over there and start doing things. and i have to say, i feel for the family , but i feel for the the family, but i feel for the family. and sometimes people don't see everything that's going on. as i understand it, the spanish police are using drones and helicopters, they're using firefighters, park rangers, the guardia civil, which is the national police force. they're also involved . so force. they're also involved. so and there is, as we saw in the images that you've shown, this is a really difficult area to search, it's not just a flat area. it's got wood. it's got trees and wooded areas, and it's also got deep ravines , which are also got deep ravines, which are going to be a difficult thing to
4:28 pm
search. so i am sure that the spanish police are making every effort . you know, tourism is the effort. you know, tourism is the centre of that or the economy of that island. and so they'll want everything done as soon as possible and hopefully find a safe . safe. >> okay. mike neville, former head of lambeth missing persons unit , thank you very much for unit, thank you very much for giving us your expert insights. and i'm joined in the studio by our reporter, charlie peters. charlie, you've been across this story since the start. is there anything new coming out of the case? >> well, there is a reference, a repeated reference to that final phone call on 815 between jay and his friend lucy on monday morning, where he said that he was dehydrated, 1% battery left on his phone and, crucially, that he had a cut on his leg. now, reports say that he sounded confused on that phone call and lucy, his friend , saying it was lucy, his friend, saying it was very weird. it was a strange scenario and to think that he might now plan to walk for 11 hours from the northwest of the island in the acas region, where he was, which is arid and
4:29 pm
mountainous, very difficult terrain down to his accommodation in the south of the island. that was she said, considered quite a surprising move to make . so lots of move to make. so lots of confusion surrounding this case, as we've heard, she has criticised this friend, has criticised this friend, has criticised the spanish police for their process not interviewing the two men that jay slater was understood to be with on sunday night, early hours of monday, after the energy festival. but also, she said, criticising them for a lack of a translator capability. she reported jay as missing on monday morning with the british embassy , but it wasn't until embassy, but it wasn't until tuesday at 145 that this search and rescue operation was launched. we've seen helicopters, drones, sniffer dogs, many four units from the civil guard on the island getting involved. but she's saying that they are regularly reaching , asking questions that reaching, asking questions that have already been put to those looking for jay since monday morning. since the alarm was raised that he was missing. with so many repeated questions,
4:30 pm
she's now urged for british authorities to come and support the rescue effort on the island. jay's mother has said that she can't bear to be involved in the search operation for fear of discovering him. >> okay, charlie peters , thank >> okay, charlie peters, thank you very much for bringing us up to speed on the case. there's lots more still to come between now and 5:00, and we'll be heanng now and 5:00, and we'll be hearing from nigel farage, who's been on the campaign trail today. he's done a bit of clay pigeon shooting , as you do. but pigeon shooting, as you do. but first, it's your latest news headunes first, it's your latest news headlines with polly middlehurst. >> martin. thank you. the headunes >> martin. thank you. the headlines this hour, government minister michael gove says he's almost lost for words after two conservative candidates were accused of election betting . accused of election betting. here's what the communities secretary had to say. it is the case that obviously any decision by anyone to use inside information to bet on the election date , that is wrong. election date, that is wrong. >> deeply regrettable. but i
4:31 pm
think the individuals concerned are now being investigated. and until that process is concluded, i think it's difficult for me to say more . say more. >> well, gove. well that comes as laura saunders and her husband, who's the tories campaign director and another candidate, craig williams, face investigations by the gambling commission . sir keir starmer commission. sir keir starmer said labour wouldn't tolerate that kind of behaviour. >> this candidate should be suspended and it's very telling that rishi sunak has not already done that. if it was one of my candidates , they'd be gone and candidates, they'd be gone and their feet would not have touched the floor. >> meanwhile, as you've been heanng >> meanwhile, as you've been hearing the search for missing british teenager jay slater is intensifying on the island of tenerife, the 19 year old was attending a music festival on the spanish island and hasn't been seen since monday . it's been seen since monday. it's understood he'd gone to stay with people he met on sunday night, who was staying in an apartment in a remote location on the bank of england, held its interest rate at a 5.25% today,
4:32 pm
the highest level since 2008. the bank, saying it needs more certainty that inflation will stay low before considering a rate cut. and boris johnson is promising an honest, unrestrained and deeply revealing account of his time in downing street. in his new memoir, the book, entitled unleashed, will hit shelves in october and will also cover his time as mayor of london. those are the headlines for the latest gb news alerts, scan the qr code on the screen or go to gb news. com slash alerts. >> thank you polly. now, if you want to get in touch with us, simply go to gbnews.com/yoursay and i'll read out the best of your messages a little later the show. i'm martin daubney on gb news, britain's

britain's election channel. >> this vote may seem to be about the politicians in the media, but it's actually about you . you. >> and we won't ever forget that. >> join us up and down the country as we follow every moment together. >> now more than ever, it's important to hear all sides as you make your decision ahead of polling day. >> we're here for you. this is gb news the people's channel. >> britain's election . channel. >> britain's election. channel. >> britain's election. channel. >> welcome back. it's 436. i'm martin daubney and this is gb news now as the conservatives election campaign continues to spectacularly unravel, labour leader sir keir starmer has been in north yorkshire today campaigning on the issue of the economy. yesterday pledged to construct 1.5 million homes in england over the course of the next parliament as part of a wider promise to get britain building again. and i'm joined by our political correspondent
4:37 pm
olivia utley, who's been with the labour party on the campaign trail today. olivia, welcome back to the show. it's an astonishing situation. 1.5 million houses being rolled out. we don't know where they're going to be built. we don't know how much they're going to cost. we don't know if it will even get through the red tape. and guess what? keir starmer isn't being asked any of those questions because once again, we're talking about the self implosion of the conservative party around the betting scandal. and were going ahead to another one of the leaders debates tonight. sir keir starmer has been handed all the ammunition he needs to control this debate. it's an astonishing situation. olivia utley . situation. olivia utley. >> well, as you say, it is truly astonishing. you would expect, with just two weeks to go until the general election, it being widely assumed that keir starmer is going to get an enormous majority, the main focus would be on labour's plans for tax and spend, grilling the probable new prime minister on his housing
4:38 pm
policy , on his policies for policy, on his policies for crime and his policy for schools. but really, what we're all interested in and what we're all interested in and what we're all talking about is the outgoing prime minister. i say outgoing, of course, we don't know for sure until the morning of july the 5th, but it's certainly looking that way. the conservative party is mired in scandal once again, but we should be talking about labour, and we should be talking about what they're planning and what keir starmer has been planning this morning is 1.5 million new homes up and down the uk. this is the sort of flagship part of a very wide ranging housing policy . he also wants to policy. he also wants to massively reform the rental sector to make it easier for tenants . now the conservatives tenants. now the conservatives have tried to do that on multiple occasions and serve the snp in scotland, but they found time and again that the issue at the end of the day is with supply . you can change the supply. you can change the reforms around leasehold or around the way landlords can evict their tenants. but you can't really get to the bottom of the issue of rising rents
4:39 pm
unless you deal with supply. we asked keir starmer about it a little earlier today and here's what he had to say. >> we have to protect those in rented accommodation. they're paying rented accommodation. they're paying very high rents a lot of the time, and the conditions aren't what they should be, and that's why we've set out our package of measures this morning, including measures to limit the amount that landlords can sort of get people to compete against each other, to put the rent up and up and up and the money that people have to put down by way of a deposit in the first place. but it is important that that's alongside the housebuilding . we need 1.5 the housebuilding. we need 1.5 million houses because more houses mean less pressure on the rented market. that will require tough decisions on planning . tough decisions on planning. >> as well as nicola sturgeon learnt the hard way in scotland, changing the way the rental sector works is easier said than done. if you make life more difficult for landlords, you have the problem of landlords leaving the sector altogether, which actually just reduces the supply of housing and ends up paradoxically driving up rents.
4:40 pm
keir starmer says that his plan to mitigate against that is to build these houses. but as you mentioned there at the beginning , martin, will that just get wrapped up in red tape and also, given that the labour party is set to win this enormous majority and will be inheriting all sorts of naturally conservative sort of nimby ish seats, is there a danger that once labour gets into power and mps have their constituents writing to them, saying please don't build a thousand new homes in my village? the local schools, the local gp's just won't be able to handle it. will we see a u—turn from keir starmer ? starmer? >> well, that remains to be seen. and in the next hour , seen. and in the next hour, olivia utley, we'll talk to you a little bit more about that debate tonight and what we can expect to hear from sir keir starmer. thank you very much for joining us live from york. olivia utley. thank you very much. now moving on. reform uk leader nigel farage has been in cheshire today highlighting his campaigning around farming issues on the election trail. there he is . clay pigeon there he is. clay pigeon shooting. farage also met with
4:41 pm
local residents before trying out some clay pigeon shooting at an outdoor activity centre . an outdoor activity centre. >> so i've come to rural cheshire because there's been two little debate in this campaign about farming , two campaign about farming, two little debate about rural living, two little debate about country sports. so here we are at a big country sports activity centre and, you know, all over europe, right . issues, farming europe, right. issues, farming issues have been huge political issues have been huge political issues . so i've come to this to issues. so i've come to this to say, even if it's just for a couple of hours of the general election campaign, let's not forget about farming . let's not forget about farming. let's not forget about farming. let's not forget about farming. let's not forget about the 15% of people that live in rural communities. >> that's that's nigel farage giving it both barrels . now, giving it both barrels. now, throughout the election campaign, we'll be hearing from people across the united kingdom about what really matters to them. key issues such as nhs waiting lists, the impact of immigration, the cost of living crisis and crime and policing . crisis and crime and policing. our reporters have been to meet voters from all four nations and will be hearing from them regularly before polling day and
4:42 pm
today , the first time we meet today, the first time we meet james hitchcock, he's the chief executive officer of radnorshire wildlife trust in wales . wildlife trust in wales. >> so i'm coming at this with a great interest in food , farming great interest in food, farming and nature, it's an issue that is hugely important to all of us. and the decisions that are made in the next five years really are going to have impact for the next 30 years and beyond. we've heard a lot of talk, and there's often a lot of hubns talk, and there's often a lot of hubris around food, food security and how we should spend our money on supporting farming . our money on supporting farming. it's particularly relevant here in mid—wales because it's very rural, very rural economy. 90% of wales is farmed . and while of wales is farmed. and while it's true that wales has devolved decision making powers through the senate, for the environment, it which also includes agriculture that doesn't really make the westminster elections any less important. there's a huge amount
4:43 pm
that can be, signalled in the form of leadership. while there's mention of plans to invest in nature and commitments to nature in most of the main party's manifestos, none of them really go far enough. if we were to say fewer woodlands , more to say fewer woodlands, more polluted rivers, less wildlife possible and probable that fewer people would come here. and that's less income, less diversification opportunities . diversification opportunities. and that is a degenerative spiral where we want a regenerative spiral and a restorative, hopeful future . restorative, hopeful future. >> now it's not long to go before england take on denmark in euro 2024. gareth southgate has named the same team that started sunday's win over serbia . you can see pictures now of england fans having a lot of fun in frankfurt. it looks like a highly cultural trip as they're dunking into the fountains in frankfurt town square, and that's my home city of nottingham. that's the live event there. they're just getting the ales in. they're
4:44 pm
just getting ready . a lot of just getting ready. a lot of forest fans there, no doubt an area i know well, all getting ready for the big kick off. can southgate's boys bring home the bacon against denmark? i'm martin daubney on gb news, britain's news channel

4:46 pm
4:47 pm
welcome back. it's 447. i'm martin daubney on gb news at 5:00 and have the latest on the tory betting scandal. as sir keir starmer criticises rishi sunak's response to this emerging crisis. now, just a few minutes ago, before england are back in action at euro 2024. and gareth southgate has named an unchanged team to face denmark in frankfurt , while jude bellingham frankfurt, while jude bellingham scored as england beat serbia one nil in a nervy encounter on sunday evening. their performance was widely criticised. certainly was in my
4:48 pm
house, but the manager, gareth southgate, has warned denmark that england will be better this evening . evening. >> i know that we can play better than we did the other day, but i thought the players , day, but i thought the players, in what is an incredibly pressurised moment, started the game exceptionally well and defended brilliantly throughout the whole game , and i think the whole game, and i think they'll be better for that game. i think they'll be better for having a game under their belt. >> well, kick off beckons and our reporter , will hollis, is at our reporter, will hollis, is at a fan zone in my home city of nottingham. will the volume certainly seems to be going up there in terms of the noise, and no doubt the amount of ales being swigged. what's the mood on the ground ? on the ground? >> well interesting piece. >> well interesting piece. >> yes. well, some 500 football fans here in nottingham are descending on bink's yard, a fan zone just outside of the city, andifs zone just outside of the city, and it's not a long time before the england kick off will take
4:49 pm
place and a few people are getting into the spirit . now getting into the spirit. now let's see if we can get a few of these people to talk. my friend, my friend. >> you're fine with that. >> you're fine with that. >> it's my phil foden's on fire. >> it's my phil foden's on fire. >> he'll be playing the germans off the park, my friend. >> how are you feeling about the tournament so far ? tournament so far? >> excited. we're doing all right. very excited for today's game. >> and how do you think we're going to do? it was a shaky start. some might say against serbia. how about denmark? >> it wasn't that shaky. we won three. we won. we won the game. we got three points on the board . happy days. >> and what's the atmosphere like here at a fan zone rather than sitting at home or in the pub? >> you've got to be in the fan zone. you've got to be with your boys. it's ten pints, it's with the lads, everyone cheering that's what we want. that's what england's all about. >> from frankfurt to berlin, who the is jumping ? the is jumping? >> well, i think we're gonna, enjoy . enjoy. >> yeah, i'm afraid we had to cut off their apologies for that language. those lads are refreshed and excited and it's
4:50 pm
approaching kick off. but, of course, apologies for that language. now, the big kick off is due in ten minutes time. a lot of people saying, a lot of people saying that we should maybe have been a bit more adventurous with the team . do adventurous with the team. do you think we are a bit too safe? the other night i certainly felt like it was watching the john terry. stevie g, frank lampard years. how many times have we seen england go one nil up and then sit back and defend it, and we just bite our fingernails to the stumps over the following hour? now that is pictures of that's the boxpark there, the fans getting revved up. they're all standing up. hopefully we can't hear them. that saves us having to apologise again. but everyone is getting excited. will the will the team, as we understand it, is unchanged? is that the right thing to do and like me, like me? do you think we perhaps should have taken, jack grealish to this tournament? because i always
4:51 pm
think right at the death ten minutes ago, you want someone like grillo to come on a player with capability. will the danes kick lumps out of jude bellingham ? they were going for bellingham? they were going for him the other night. is that going to happen tonight ? right. going to happen tonight? right. there's quite a bit of money down on the number of yellow cards that might fly around in this match. the danes are renowned for their robust , renowned for their robust, football. will they be going for ballet? i mean, if that lad gets injured, we are going to be in trouble . nobody wants to see trouble. nobody wants to see that happen. we can't be a one man team now. as i said , phil man team now. as i said, phil foden is starting the match. he came for quite a lot of stick. he didn't seem to be the same player for england as he was for man city last year. of course, he was the player of the year in the premier league. they're getting warmed up now. you can hear the sounds. they're getting really revved up in the box part. they're and the team used no change. like i say, trent alexander—arnold when he starts in midfield, looks like he's starting in the same position. normally of course plays a more defensive role, but he's going
4:52 pm
to be in that midfield position again . i thought a lot of balls again. i thought a lot of balls were going astray. was he naturally stepping up into that position or was it a bit of a reach? denmark, of course, have got a man united duo, christian eriksen, who had that dramatic heart attack. now he played fantastically the night and rasmus holland of course that duo, they know their stuff . duo, they know their stuff. they're not going to take this lying down. they're going to give england a good show . give england a good show. nobody's really talking about the danes. they think there's going to be a walk in the park for england. i don't think that's going to be the case. denmark, of course, drew one one with slovenia, england one one with slovenia, england one one with serbia. and because there was a draw this afternoon, if england win tonight, if england win we go through to the final 16. so all to play for kick off in about seven minutes time. now i've got a few of your saves here. bunch of hundreds of emails have been coming in dunng emails have been coming in during the show. let's get a few of those now. just stop oil are just continually gets your goat
4:53 pm
because of course yesterday it was stonehenge. today they targeted two private jets at stansted airport. angle grinding their way through the perimeter fencing. a lot of people saying, well, why isn't that a criminal act? why isn't that tantamount to domestic terrorism? how can you cut your way into an airport? does that set the precedent for terrorists to be doing the same? and geraldine says this because, martin, please don't compare the sheep to just stop oil people. sheep are far more intelligent. jeff moody was at stonehenge. they were sheep behind him. and i was i was having a bit of a joke. the sheep are smarter than the protesters . as mike says this. protesters. as mike says this. why, oh why are these protesters always released? make an example of them. bang them all up. and garwood says this. it's time to put a stop to the useless destruction of property . what destruction of property. what they did to stonehenge was a global tragedy. those those stones have been around for thousands of years. these entitled idiots have no idea what they are playing at. so

minister. anthony, thanks for joining us and facing the music as it were. now i spoke with caroline slocock earlier, a former private secretary at number 10. she was there during the maggie thatcher years and she said quite clearly , quite she said quite clearly, quite resolutely, if this had happened on maggie's watch, these people would be straight out of the doon would be straight out of the door. do you think they should get the chop ? get the chop? >> well, first of all, it's clear. massively disappointing that, this is about these reports, and i'm extremely angry about them, but i don't actually know. we don't actually know what has happened yet. i don't as far as i'm aware, we don't even know whether the bets were placed by these people, and there is clearly no investigation ongoing by the gambling commission, and we need to wait for the outcome of that. but if your premise is that these bets were placed, then clearly it's absolutely wrong to use insider information about the date of an election to place bets and try and make money from it. if that did happen, absolutely. it's wrong and, you know, appropriate action should be taken. i mean , one of the in
5:13 pm
be taken. i mean, one of the in terms of the candidates being suspended, we are actually it's actually too late to do that in terms of taking them off the ballot paper, because the that has now closed and whatever happens, they will be on the ballot paper. >> i think it's astonishing that instead of scrutinising keir starmer's taxation policy, instead of scrutinising his housing policy, or indeed anything he's saying, the conservatives seem to be handing an open goal to the labour party every single day. starmer is getting away with that. the most bafic getting away with that. the most basic of analysis, because the conservatives are daily shooting themselves in the foot. >> well, that's why i find this whole story about the gambling deeply, deeply frustrating . and, deeply, deeply frustrating. and, you know, and it does generally make me very angry about it all. i don't know the facts of it, but the fact that we are having a debate here now, discussing it is, is very frustrating because as you say, i've been out on the doors all day. i've knocked on over 100 doors today, talking to the residents of voters in saint neots about the issues that affect them, and about their concerns. i have to say, no one's actually brought up this of gambling issue. it's been
5:14 pm
developing, during the day , but developing, during the day, but it's, it's very frustrating and. absolutely. i want the debate to be about the future of this country, about the sort of country, about the sort of country we live in, whether we have a socialist government or don't have a socialist government, whether taxes carry on rising massively and, you know, labour won't rule out the 17 different tax rises they're not ruling out in terms of stamp duty or, inheritance tax on farming land and, capital gains tax and so on. and that's what the people of the country really, really care about. and absolutely, we should be holding them to account. and that was what the debate should be about. so distractions like this, the, the, the betting on the, the election date, i don't know, the facts of it, but it clearly is deeply, deeply frustrating and disappointing . disappointing. >> okay, anthony, i'm joined in the studio by our political edhon the studio by our political editor, chris hope. he's got a question for you. >> auntie. hi. just a quick, quick question. i'm sorry to ask you about betting, but that's the story of the day today. is it rife in westminster? have you ever bet on anything like this? i mean, i just think if you're if you're if you're engaged in
5:15 pm
this in politics, surely you shouldn't be betting on it at the same time. >> well, quite. i mean, look, i'm not a gambler, and i think i have placed a bet on a horse like once or twice in about 20 years ago. so i know . years ago. so i know. absolutely. of course, i haven't done any bets on this, and i, and i do take a rather puritanical view on this that, you know, if it looks bad, if it doesn't survive the sort of the, the, the private eye test as it were, let alone the sort of legal test, you absolutely shouldn't be doing it, but i just before i came on air, i was reading, jeito fork's account that actually, apparently a lot of lobby correspondents do place bets on, on the election date. and obviously they get some sort of information, gossip or whatever. they're not working directly for the prime minister but it's. yeah. i mean, i don't know who's been placing all these bets, on the date of election, but it certainly wasn't me and anthony as a minister, as a candidate , have minister, as a candidate, have you been looking at this campaign and just headbutting the desk, just just chewing your arm off about the fact d—day was arm off about the fact d—day was a total debacle? >> the lack of an umbrella at
5:16 pm
the launch, and now this. it just seems to be a total calamity. >> well , it's definitely had, >> well, it's definitely had, downs and up and probably more downs and up and probably more downs than i'd like. that is definitely true, you know, this wasn't the election campaign i wasn't the election campaign i was hoping for, and all i do, i'm not involved in the national campaign. i, directly i campaign locally in my constituency and my local campaign, as far as i can tell, is going pretty well. i'm having quite a positive response on the doors. and i have to say, and i know this is common amongst other conservative mps, that actually the reaction we're getting from voters on the doors is completely different from what the national polls are telling us. it's quite difficult to reconcile the two, but there are an awful lot of people who don't know, and that is quite unusual, who are undecided. and that is quite unusual, just two weeks out from a general election. and but we don't know . you know, but we don't know. you know, it's a cliche for politicians in my position to say the only poll that counts is election day. thatis that counts is election day. that is that is obviously true . that is that is obviously true. we are clearly behind in the national polls, but also i'm old enough to remember a lot of different electoral upsets in the past. i remember the 92 election really, really well
5:17 pm
when everybody was predicting that, neil kinnock would become prime minister and then even, even when the polls closed, people were saying that, and then, you know, as the night wore on, it ended up with john major carrying on as prime minister. so you know, the odds may be against us at the moment, but there are electoral upsets and even if the polls are vaguely right and don't shift very much, then what really matters if labour does get a supermajority, as various people are predicting that you need a strong opposition to hold the government to account, to be able to function as a proper opposition. if you have very, very few mps, you don't have enough people on select committees, you don't have enough shadow ministers and certainly shadow ministers with the experience to really take the experience to really take the fight to the government. and if you have a government with really sort of unfettered powers, then they're far more likely to do really sort of crazy things and bad things. and that's why you need a strong opposition . opposition. >> okay. anthony brown, transport minister, thank you very much for joining transport minister, thank you very much forjoining us on gb news. thanks for your company, chris. that's just you over some of that and just take a step back on this scandal, bring viewers up to speed about how we
5:18 pm
got to where we are and the reaction. and it's allowed the tories political opponents to just put the boot in. >> yes, it has now, a few weeks ago we heard of craig williams. he's a former aide to the prime minister in parliament, an mp in the last parliament, he admitted having a flutter on a date of the election. he's now being investigated by the gambling regulator. he he himself said a huge error of judgement and that was embarrassing. and the pm rishi sunak condemned him. the new stuff is damaging, very damaging allegations that laura saunders, a candidate, she reportedly put money on the date of the election . her husband is of the election. her husband is a man called tony leigh. he's a director of campaigning. he's in charge of the entire campaign. he is now taking a leave of absence from the campaign. he's in charge of it. >> but that's like suspending your football manager during tournament. >> yeah, and you're losing five nil. it's half time. >> yeah, and you're losing five nil. it's half time . that's how nil. it's half time. that's how bad it is. he's married to laura saunders. he's being investigated by the charity commission. we understand, a tory spokesman has said today we have been contacted by the
5:19 pm
gambling commission about a small number of individuals, a close protection officer, a police officer looking after rishi sunak safety. he's been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, allegedly putting some money on the timing of the of the election. allegedly, we haven't yet heard from these people . i'm yet heard from these people. i'm sure they would say they've done nothing wrong or they'll cooperate if they're being investigated. but deeply embarrassing. and the opponents of the pm of the other party leaders, ed davey and, sir keir starmer, have been not have been not been slow to get involved. here's sir keir starmer, this candidate should be suspended. >> and it's very telling that rishi sunak has not already done that. if it was one of my candidates , they'd be gone and candidates, they'd be gone and their feet would not have touched the floor. there's a wider point here that you touch on which is we've now had 14 years of chaos, of division, of politics being about self—entitlement and politics needs to be about service, about pubuc needs to be about service, about public service. that's sir keir starmer stressing public service, as he has done since
5:20 pm
last october's party conference. >> and ed davey has also got involved. here's here's how he got stuck in. >> i think it's quite awful. the idea that you bet on something than, you know, the result that is immoral, it is illegal. and i can't believe people at the top of the conservative party are doing this and have allowed this to happen, this is corruption, frankly, and it needs to have a heavy hand from the top down. >> the word corruption i mentioned, which is always bad in terms of politics. and of course, dear old michael gove , course, dear old michael gove, who is leaving politics in two weeks time on his last probably morning media round , he's off morning media round, he's off doing something else. he's served a long time as a frontbench tory politician. he was the person out the traps for the tory party. he was asked both about these dreadful polls yesterday and also this gambling issue today. here's what he told me earlier on a building site in west london. >> i'm in the polls and it's just a snapshot show a slightly further behind than that . but
5:21 pm
further behind than that. but i'm convinced that as the arguments are heard by gb news voters, as they have a chance to reflect on what life would be like under keir starmer, with taxes higher, with risks to our national security, i believe that more people will decide that more people will decide that it would be completely wrong to hand keir starmer a blank check and they will vote conservative. >> there's an emerging betting scandal about the tory party on the date of the election. two candidates are allegedly being looked at by the gambling commission , and a third commission, and a third individual in the party hq has withdrawn from frontline duties. in terms of organising the campaign is your party corrupt? >> no, it is the case that obviously any decision by anyone to use inside information to bet on the election date , that is on the election date, that is wrong. deeply regrettable, but i think the individuals concerned are now being investigated and until that process is concluded, i think it's difficult for me to say more because you've got to respect the integrity of the investigation . investigation. >> and chris hope this story has moved on. even further in the
5:22 pm
last hour. i think we can show a graphic on screen now. there's been there's been an investigation by the guardian. they've looked at the amount of bets betfair, the ticking along amount of bets that's been going. i think we can see on screen. take that lower graphic off. you can see a huge spike there. chris. the day before rishi sunak announced the general election. this has been flipped. >> i should explain for listeners on the radio who can't see this, but we are showing a huge thousands of pounds being bet marked. and isn't it on the 21st of may, the day before that wednesday in the rain on the 22nd of may, when the pm announced it, and several thousands of pounds there, almost six grand. yeah. so this is a novelty betting market, not a big market, but it's one where people, you know, have have a nibble here and there. punters have a have a bet, but that shows a degree of someone that knew something. let's say that can we or a bunch of somebodies who knew something because if there if the claims here, they were betting £100 little nibbles that's multiples of that by many. >> why that matters. >> why that matters. >> and that's, that's only betfair. that's one of the bookies not all of them, but why
5:23 pm
that matters . why that matters that matters. why that matters is because morgan mcsweeney, who's this campaign strategist at labour, apparently saw the markets move and got labour to swing into action behind the early election campaign. so it cost the surprise factor for rishi sunak of course, that caught out other people nigel farage, he said. i won't stand in clacton because of that. and then he reversed his decision after that. >> okay. thank you very much chris hope. superb stuff. and we need to mention here the candidates for the clacton constituency are as follows jovan owusu, nepal. he's the labour party . giles watling, labour party. giles watling, conservative party matthew bensalem , the liberal democrats, bensalem, the liberal democrats, nigel farage, reform uk , natasha nigel farage, reform uk, natasha osborne, the green party, craig jamieson , the climate party, jamieson, the climate party, tony mac, independent, tassos papanastasiou, he's the heritage party and andrew pemberton, who's from ukip. party and andrew pemberton, who's from ukip . now, the last who's from ukip. now, the last few minutes england have gone one nil up against denmark at

euro 2024 and we've got some live pictures here of that. >> here we go and watch the planes go in the air. >> wollop there you go. what a waste of money, is what i think. but nevertheless, the court in the moment one nil england. well done. southgate's boys getting quick advantage. quick advantage. and now we've got will hollis for a quick bit of reaction in nottingham . reaction in nottingham. nottingham lads. yeah >> gone. >> gone. >> gone. >> gone that you can see. here we go. >> yeah . >> yeah. >> yeah. >> now go the boys charge it around. that's my home city naseum. get in there lads. >> one nil superb stuff. >> stick with us. see you

slater. the 19 year old from lancashire who's gone missing in tenerife . and his mother says tenerife. and his mother says the continued search for her son is an absolute living nightmare. jay was last heard from on monday morning after telling friends he'd take the 11 hour walk back to his hotel . well, walk back to his hotel. well, i'm joined now in our studio by our reporter charlie peters . our reporter charlie peters. charlie, you've been across this story since the start. what's the latest? well jay's friend lucy has said that she has urged the spanish police to do more and has criticised the police on tenerife, saying that the british police and authorities need to come and support this search and rescue operation. >> and she's pointed out how the two people that she said that jay was with on sunday evening need to be interviewed by the british authorities . they have british authorities. they have now left the island. that implies that she believes, and those around jay's search and rescue team on the island believe that those two people live in britain , that they are live in britain, that they are british and that they've returned after a holiday. now
5:29 pm
the timeline has come to us now, showing that on sunday evening jay was at the energy festival in the island nearby where he was staying. but it's understood that in the later hours of sunday, the early hours of monday, he then went on to an after party with those two unnamed individuals who, as we understand, have now left the island. he wasn't heard from again until 815. in the morning, when he made this phone call to lucy, where he said he had a cut on his leg. he was dehydrated, his battery on his phone was just 1, and he had no idea where he was. also troublingly he said that he'd missed the bus back to the accommodation on the south of the island. he was in the northwest in the markaz area, and he said that he was going to attempt the 11 hour walk back to his accommodation . well, the his accommodation. well, the last time his phone was seen on monday morning before the battery understand, went out. was it 850? that was the last sign of his location and that was in the northwest of the island. now lucy reported him as
5:30 pm
missing to the as missing to the british embassy. later that morning. but the search and rescue operation wasn't launched by the spanish authorities until 145 the next day, sparking some of that criticism. i think that we've heard today, but they say that there are four units of the civil guard on patrol in that area. specialist mountain rescue teams are involved . they've also teams are involved. they've also said that they've got top cover helicopters and drones. and on the ground there are sniffer dogs designed obviously to conduct these specialist mountain rescue operations. but we have heard that particularly strong criticism from a close friend of jay's on the island, saying that not only are the spanish authorities not doing enough, but she believes that they haven't even got a translator in place to engage with jay's loved ones who are on the island. she says that they're still re—asking her questions that she believes she already went through on monday, after she said that jay was missing. so quite a lot of criticism coming for in the
5:31 pm
spanish authorities today. but as i said, they're still running that search and rescue operation today, which has been described as a critical day in that search, as we move over 72 hours after he was last heard from. >> okay. thank you. charlie. peter's bringing us the latest on the case of the missing jay slater . thank you. now there's slater. thank you. now there's lots more still to come between now and 6:00 and later in the show. i'll tell you what. how emmanuel macron could be about to bring the european union to the brink of collapse. but first, it's time for your latest news headlines with polly middlehurst. >> martin. thank you. the headunes >> martin. thank you. the headlines this hour government minister michael gove says he's almost lost for words after two conservative candidates were accused of election betting . accused of election betting. here's what he had to say. >> is the case that obviously any decision by anyone to use inside information to bet on the election date, that is wrong . election date, that is wrong. deeply regrettable, but i think the individuals concerned are
5:32 pm
now being investigated. and until that process is concluded, i think it's difficult for me to say more . say more. >> well, that comes as laura saunders and her husband , who's saunders and her husband, who's the tories campaign director, and another candidate, craig williams, face investigations by the gambling commission . sir the gambling commission. sir keir starmer says labour wouldn't tolerate that kind of behaviour. >> this candidate should be suspended and it's very telling that rishi sunak has not already done that . if it was one of my done that. if it was one of my candidates, they'd be gone and their feet would not have touched the floor. >> now, as you've been hearing the search for the missing british teenager jay slater is intensifying on the island of tenerife , the 19 year old went tenerife, the 19 year old went to a music festival on the spanish island but hasn't been seen since monday. it's understood he'd gone to stay with people he met at the festival, who was staying in an apartment in the northwest of the island . and the bank of the island. and the bank of england has held its interest rate of 5.25. today, it is the highest level since 2008. but the bank saying it needs more

britain's election. channel. >> welcome back. your time is 538. i'm martin daubney on gb news now. four party leaders are getting ready to answer questions from voters live on television this evening. rishi sunak, sir keir starmer, sir ed davey and john swinney will each have half an hour to put their case forward. now the event will take place in york and our political correspondent olivia utley is in york for us right now. olivier, welcome to the show. there you are. you're in the spin room ahead of tonight's big showdown . tell us what can big showdown. tell us what can we expect bristol north. >> hello. yes, i'm in the spin room now, which at the moment, to be honest, is quite a lot of journalists gathered around watching the football on their phones. but very soon we will be engaging in this big q&a session. it's not a debate, it's each of the four leaders of the main parties doing a half an hour q&a with the public. and the order we're expecting to see is ed davey john swinney of the
5:39 pm
snp, followed by keir starmer and finally rishi sunak. i think we can expect to see quite a lot of those very specific and big attack numbers that both the conservatives and labour have been throwing around in the last few weeks. the conservatives claim that £2,000 will be added to every family's tax bill under laboun to every family's tax bill under labour. now the way they have got to that conclusion is a little bit dubious. they've essentially added together all of the seemingly unfunded claims that labour promises that labour have said it will make, and divided it equally between the number of families in the country. that said, the attack line from labour that a tory government would add £4,800 to your mortgage is just as dubious. the thing is, though, that doesn't really matter in debates like this or in q and a's, i should call it like this. what matters is that repetition. and last time we saw that it really worked. the more that they use these numbers, the more that they were driven home to that they were driven home to that audience , and the more they
5:40 pm
that audience, and the more they came up on the doorstep. and in polling , talking of polling, i polling, talking of polling, i think what we can expect to hear a lot of as well tonight is that dramatic. there's two dramatic polls from two days ago which showed the conservatives essentially being decimated, labour getting the second biggest majority since the second world war and having more seats than they did under tony blair. now, of course, that's terrible news for the conservatives, and rishi sunak will be quite uncomfortable talking about that. but it's also not wonderful for labour because there is a worry, and i've heard this repeated by lots of labour candidates today about complacency . and you hear that complacency. and you hear that there is a huge super labour majority coming up. and the worry is that labour voters in safe labour seats just don't bother to turn out to vote. so it'll be really interesting to see if the question time audience tonight raises that issue. the audiences selection of voters from across the country with differing viewpoints. but we haven't heard any more about it than that. fascinating to see what they throw up this evening .
5:41 pm
throw up this evening. >> now, olivia utley, we've seen with the gambling scandal fiasco today already, sir keir starmer has waded in and attacked rishi sunak already. ed davey has. and john swinney, well, the lifeblood of the snp, is attacking the conservatives. you know, 24 over seven, 365 days a year. know, 24 over seven, 365 days a year . so know, 24 over seven, 365 days a year. so you'd know, 24 over seven, 365 days a year . so you'd expect this to be year. so you'd expect this to be a situation where three are against. one is more or less this will be all eyes on rishi sunak. and once again, olivia, we keep coming back to the same point. sir keir starmer seems to be walking his way into downing street without facing any real criticism, without facing any real scrutiny of his policies, because the tory election campaign is simply handing him a gift every single time the tories seem to be shooting themselves in the foot . themselves in the foot. >> well, absolutely, martin, i think most of the journalists and candidates i've been talking to over the past week or so have basically said most days, well, at least things can't get any
5:42 pm
worse for the conservatives. or at least things can't get worse for the conservatives but day after day, something worse does seem to happen . and keir starmer seem to happen. and keir starmer has been really robust on this. today he said that if these were any of his candidates, then they would be out of the door straight away. they wouldn't even be able to hit the floor. that puts rishi sunak in a really tricky position , ian. and really tricky position, ian. and this as an issue, does seem to be cutting through with the public. be cutting through with the pubuc.the be cutting through with the public. the public really do not like the mirror sniff of corruption. so i'm sure that will be a question that does come up this evening with this question time audience. and who knows what rishi sunak is going to make of that. >> okay, olivia utley live from the spin room in york. thank you for that update. look forward to that debate later on. now let's bnng that debate later on. now let's bring you some breaking news. and it's about a development in that tory betting scandal . and that tory betting scandal. and the conservative candidate, laura saunders, is facing a probe over allegedly betting on the timing of the election, and her solicitor has said she'll be
5:43 pm
cooperating with the gambling commission investigation. the solicitor also said she is considering legal action against the bbc and other outlets who infringe her privacy rights. breaking news there. just to recap, there's been a spectacular development. laura saunders, conservative candidate who's facing that police probe, is saying she's considering legal action against the bbc and other outlets who have infringed her privacy rights . now moving her privacy rights. now moving on. could emmanuel macron's decision to call a snap election spell the end of the european union? and what effect could that have on us? here in the uk? i'm martin daubney on gb news, britain's news channel

5:49 pm
with both his political future and perhaps the future of the french economy and the european union itself spell out to us, if you could, alex, why, yes, macron is playing with fire. >> yes, absolutely. martin. well, macron's gamble is really risky because, there are two rounds for the elections on the 30th of june and the 7th of july. >> so, if, marine le pen's party, the rassemblement national, the national rally comes to government with its could likely do that means france's relationship with the european union is going to be in jeopardy, relations, for example, between france and ukraine is going to be, a chaos, basically. and the relationship between berlin and paris is going to be, will have a huge problem. and so really, this election is a huge gamble and it's a huge risk for, for europe
5:50 pm
and alex seal, there's also another possibility waiting in the wings which could itself be perilous. >> and that's this a coalition between macron and the socialist front populaire. they demand they're demanding an immediate $50 billion. beg your pardon. euros a year, tax increases and at least ,106 billion extra year in spending. it wants to raise income tax, reintroduce punitive wealth taxes and basically introduce hardcore socialism into france. and that in itself, alex seal will place the french economy in peril . economy in peril. >> absolutely. and but i don't think, emmanuel macron is going to have a coalition with the nouveau populaire , the left nouveau populaire, the left party, because, lots of people have been criticising the far left. so i think people are going to either vote for, emmanuel macron party or either the far right, and if the far
5:51 pm
right comes into government, macron will have serious problems, but i don't think, he's going to have a coalition with the, the far left. i think he might have a coalition, perhaps with moderate socialists, who are still at the national assembly. >> and, alex, what about the prospect of there being civil unrest? we saw that there was unrest? we saw that there was unrest on the streets of paris after the european elections, when le pen did so well, if they were to be the prospect of le pen taking over the government, i mean, would expect to see civil unrest and that would create huge uncertainty on the markets and on the streets . markets and on the streets. >> absolutely. yeah. we saw the, the violence on the streets in paris on the night of the eu election. so the police and the authorities are really , going authorities are really, going to, see what's going to go, what's going to happen. perhaps the anti far right, groups, might march on the streets and
5:52 pm
it'll be quite, quite violent . yeah. >> and, and alex in britain , >> and, and alex in britain, rishi sunak gambled on an early election. that gamble is spectacularly backfiring. if you believe all counts . do you think believe all counts. do you think that macron's gamble will backfire similarly? or might he just pay off for him ? just pay off for him? >> i think he might pay off for it. he will still remain president, but he will be a weak president. because, well, french presidents in the past, dissolved the national assembly in 97. jacques chirac was conservative, dissolve the national assembly and govern with the socialists. but this time now. macron might govern with the with the far right. and it's, very worrying for europe, very worrying for french people. but some french people want to change. and maybe that change come to the national rally . come to the national rally. >> okay. superb, sir. thanks for joining us on the show, alex sale is a journalist who specialises in french and

european politics. all eyes on france and macron of the election now. got a quick few emails to go through here before the show ends, on the tory betting scandal, the viewer says this starmer should explain why he did not make angela rayner stand down when she was under investigation. hypocrisy of the highest order sharon adds this the investigation by the gambling commission is nothing more than smoke and mirrors to make sure that the mainstream media is on tory wrongdoing rather than scrutinising the labour party's policy proposals, susan , as this may be, gambling susan, as this may be, gambling on election date, should be banned by anybody in politics and anybody who works around the mark as this. maybe if the tories are worried about a forever government, they should be better at appealing to the wider electorate. a forever government would be forever their problem. they've been in power for 14 years and bill says this when will the tories stop kicking rishi sunak? well, thanks for all of your views

little area of high pressure that's brought most of us a fine day today, staying very pleasant through the evening. however, some patchy cloud around, but most places seeing hazy sunshine. that first area of rain though just tucking into western scotland. so we will see some rain here. could be heavy at times as we go through the night, but for most it'll stay dry through the night. bit of mist and fog maybe here and there. quite a cool night across eastern england down to single digits, well down into single digits, well down into single digits in rural spots , but digits in rural spots, but further west mostly we start friday in double figures again. we start with quite a bit of sunshine around across england and wales , but a different feel and wales, but a different feel across scotland tomorrow. much more cloud around damp and drizzly starts across the northern isles, perhaps , and northern isles, perhaps, and there'll be some outbreaks of rain across western scotland too. still some fine weather across the south and the east. quite a cloudy start across the east of northern ireland too, and we'll see generally a bit more cloud across southern areas tomorrow. but certainly to begin with. plenty of sunshine to start friday. that'll soon start to lift the temperatures as well. well we hang on to the

sunshine over eastern england. another cracking day if you like sunny weather, but further west a different feel, more cloud moving in. there will be a few showers cropping up for wales southwest england turning quite damp across northern ireland to more persistent rain edging into western scotland later on. temperatures will vary from east to west, with the cloud and the breeze, and the west feeling cool again, but in the east another warm one, 23, maybe 24 celsius. that cloud and rain, though, will continue to chug its way into parts of england, wales and scotland during friday evening. it's a weather front which will bring a few more showers this weekend, but generally a mix of sun and cloud. this weekend and it is getting warmer as we go into next week. bye for now . next week. bye for now. >> that warm feeling inside from boxt boilers , sponsors of boxt boilers, sponsors of weather on
