can't get a look in. it's time to sack southgate. let me know what you think. the usual way to get in touch. gbnews.com forward slash your say. but before we crack into the show, let's have your headlines with sam francis . your headlines with sam francis. >> martin, thank you very much and good afternoon to you. it's 3:02. first, a recap of the breaking news we've been hearing from devon in the last half hour where a schoolboy has been found guilty of attempted murder. that verdict being reached at exeter crown court today. the boy, who can't be named for legal reasons , we understand, attacked two sleeping students and a teacher at the school he was attending. that's blundell's school in tiverton. well, some other breaking news in the last half hour from wales, where workers at tata steel have announced an indefinite strike from the 8th of july in protest over the company's plans to close its blast furnaces and cut up to 2800 jobs there. the unite
3:03 pm
union, who represent more than 1500 workers in south wales , say 1500 workers in south wales, say that this strike will be the first time in the uk that steelworks carry out a strike in over 40 years. tata say they are transitioning to greener steel production, but workers argue it sacrifices their jobs, their community and future . in other community and future. in other news, opposition leaders are accusing the tories of being corrupt after a string of people with links to the party have been caught up in allegations of betting on the timing of the general election. four people are being investigated by the gambling commission, including laura saunders. she's the wife of the tories campaign director craig williams , another craig williams, another conservative candidate has also admitted to what he called an error of judgement after placing a bet on when the election would take place. well, prime minister rishi sunak says any lawbreakers in the party will be booted out, but lib dem leader ed davey says the conservatives aren't learning from their mistakes. >> people know the outcome of
3:04 pm
something and they bet on it. i think that's immoral, and i don't think that's looks i think that's right, and too often in this parliament we've seen the conservative party, its only members of the conservative party looking like they're in it for themselves , not for in for for themselves, not for in for pubuc for themselves, not for in for public service. and what's in the best, best interests of the country, sir? >> ed davey. they're speaking earlier. well, meanwhile, rishi sunakis earlier. well, meanwhile, rishi sunak is attempting to move on from that scandal, accusing labour of planning to change every rule they can to stay in power if they win the general election. in july. the prime minister is urging voters not to sleepwalk into the polls. speaking at the launch of the conservatives manifesto for wales, he warned against falling into what he called labour's trap . trap. >> the man who tried to overturn the result of the brexit referendum, who twice urged everyone to make jeremy corbyn prime minister and who ran on a series of pledges to be labour leader that he cynically then
3:05 pm
abandoned. my friends because he has such a past he doesn't deserve to decide your future . deserve to decide your future. >> and sir keir starmer has said that jeremy corbyn would have made a better prime minister than boris johnson . he was than boris johnson. he was facing a grilling from members of the public alongside rishi sunak , lib dem leader sir ed sunak, lib dem leader sir ed davey and snp leader john davey and snp leaderjohn swinney at last night's bbc question time leaders special . question time leaders special. the labour leader says though he has now changed the party and claims it's clear to see the chaos that happens under a conservative government >> the choice at the last election before the electorate was not a good choice. >> you had boris johnson, who won and then three years later was thrown out of parliament for breaking the rules that jeremy corbyn, who is now expelled from the labour party . the labour party. >> that's why i have been so determined to change the labour party and to make sure that that change labour party puts forward a credible manifesto for growth.
3:06 pm
>> so that at this election there will be a real choice between carrying on with the failure of the last 14 years, or turning the page and rebuilding the country . the country. >> sir keir starmer there, speaking earlier this afternoon. well, in other news, a boy aged just 14 at the time has been jailed today for at least 13 years for murdering another teenager outside a primary school in leeds. bardia shojaee fard has been described in court as being outwardly normal but with a worrying interest in knives. he admitted stabbing alfie lewis one afternoon in the horsforth area of leeds last november, but claimed it was in self—defence . the victim's mum self—defence. the victim's mum today says she will never forgive his killer. a police chief constable, who lied about serving in the falklands war despite being just a 15 at the time, has been sacked. nick adderley, from the northamptonshire force, has been found guilty of gross misconduct for making up his naval rank, his length of service and
3:07 pm
various achievements in the military. mr adderley has apologised to any veterans he's offended . as we've been hearing offended. as we've been hearing today, emergency crews are continuing their search across the mountains of tenerife looking for missing british teenager jay slater. the 19 year old disappeared after telling a friend he didn't know where he was and needed water, before beginning an 11 hour trek back to his hotel. we're now hearing that helicopters and rescue dogs have joined that search in tenerife as it enters its fifth day. a british tourist has been stabbed to death outside a nightclub in spain. police were called to reports of a fight around 30 miles from barcelona . around 30 miles from barcelona. that was in the early hours of this morning. the 31 year old victim died outside the oxygene nightclub , while another person nightclub, while another person was taken to hospital. that building remains cordoned off, but we understand that no arrests have been made at this stage . and finally, before we stage. and finally, before we hand back to martin, a gang of
3:08 pm
criminals, cyber criminals, that is, have published a sensitive list of data online, stolen from a blood testing company working for the nhs overnight, a russian cyber crime group known as quillin shared nearly 400gb of private information , including private information, including patient names, dates of birth, nhs numbers and even blood test results. the health service says it's now investigating the full extent of that data breach . extent of that data breach. that's the latest from the newsroom . for now, sophia newsroom. for now, sophia wenzler will have your next update in half an hour. until then, you can sign up to gb news alerts. just scan the code on your screen or go to gb news. common alerts . common alerts. >> thank you very much, sam. now there's only one place start on this friday afternoon, and it's this friday afternoon, and it's this , of course, the tory this, of course, the tory betting scandal. and i'm asking today , is this the new expenses today, is this the new expenses scandal, sir keir starmer has
3:09 pm
criticised rishi sunak for failing to suspend two tory candidates over betting allegations centring on the date of the election . the prime of the election. the prime minister is showing a total lack of leadership on this. >> let's look at what actually happenedin >> let's look at what actually happened in relation to a general election. >> the instinct of these tories when the general election is called is not how do we make this work for the country? but how do i make some money? and that tells you a broader picture about politics. of course, he should suspend these candidates. if they were my candidates , if they were my candidates, they'd be gone by now. out of they'd be gone by now. out of the door. he needs to take tough action. >> well, rishi sunak says that if anyone has broken the rules, they should face the full consequences of the law. >> he says i was incredibly angry ' >> he says i was incredibly angry , incredibly angry when i angry, incredibly angry when i learned about these allegations . learned about these allegations. lie—ins in the same anger that many of you will feel and everyone watching. and it's right that they are investigated thoroughly. these are serious allegations, right? that they're
3:10 pm
properly and thoroughly investigated as they are being independently, including a criminal investigation, as you will be aware by the police . and will be aware by the police. and what i would say is, if anyone is found to have broken the rules, they should face the full consequences of the law. >> well, what a debacle . and to >> well, what a debacle. and to discuss it, i'm joined by our political editor, chris hope . political editor, chris hope. chris, welcome to the show in the late 1990s, the major regime was plagued by allegations of sleaze. in its final days in 2009, the expenses scandal consume ed, the conservative party and now the betting scandal. now i know chris obe, you worked across the expenses scandal at the time. do you think that this current debacle has echoes of that time where people really saw politicians as the avaricious, self—serving individuals that they are ? individuals that they are? >> i think helen martin and i'm in essex now , i'm not as early, in essex now, i'm not as early, early in westminster. i think you're right there is a cut
3:11 pm
through with this, betting, issue , new allegations. i was issue, new allegations. i was talking to a former senior strategist earlier. i think you can compare it in part in a small way, to the mp expenses scandal, which i worked on for the telegraph. back then it was claims of cat food very small claims of cat food very small claims that we were paying mps personal live bills they had for cat food and the like , which cat food and the like, which really annoyed people. ginger crinkles reminds me of one a packet of biscuits for less than a pound. this kind of detail really made people cross, and the figures in this betting issue are low. maybe £3,000 bet on this july 4th. election, with betfair one of the several different betting companies . different betting companies. george osborne said on his podcast. the former tory chancellor 40 people, four zero people knew in advance of when this election was being called. what's happened is the gambling commission has asked all the betting companies for all the details of anybody who put money on the date of the election for
3:12 pm
july 4th, between may the 1st and may, the 21st. they're going through that list and they're seeing who here knows rishi sunak, who here is involved in the close team around the prime minister because if they if their name pops up, they'll get a letter, a phone call from the gambling commission. and that's why rishi sunak isn't quite clear what to do next. i think because he doesn't know how wide this goes. he was asked earlier did a cabinet minister put a date, a money on the date of election? he doesn't know. so he's in the dark. we're in a dark and what might emerge over the next few days is how wide or not this scandal grows. until we know the scale of it. i don't think the pm can act, and while he can't act, you've got keir starmer on the second day or the third day of this, of this big issue making political capital on it. and when no one's asking starmer about his plans for government . government. >> that's right. there's just no scrutiny of the labour party once again, it's worth pointing out, chris, that betfair is only the sixth biggest bookies in the
3:13 pm
uk. they're relatively small players and it's only one tracking of across one book is this may get bigger and bigger the more we look into it, and you're dead right? chris what this has allowed is for rishi sunak's political opponents to take the moral high ground, ed davey calling it immoral . davey calling it immoral. starmer a total lack of leadership, nigel farage saying they're morally bankrupt, the conservatives, they're like a dodgy tenant who knows he's being evicted, takes the light bulbs and the toilet seat with him. he's saying this is even worse than the d—day debacle . worse than the d—day debacle. >> yes, well, i mean, farage has a way of describing it. i mean, yes, i think it is a serious matter , it looks like they're in matter, it looks like they're in it for themselves. keir starmer talks about public service. he's in it to restore pride in public service. he of course, rishi sunak came into power saying that the old days of boris johnson and the chaotic nature of partygate and other failings in his personal life were moved on. i'm a clean, clean person doing this. i mean , all that is
3:14 pm
doing this. i mean, all that is now gone because he can't do anything about it. he's been seen to be weak. he didn't suspend craig williams, his former parliamentary aide, when he admitted having a flutter as he admitted having a flutter as he described it on the july 4th date. the second candidate now who's being investigated, her husband is the party's national campaign director and a fourth individual, a policeman, has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office over betting on the date. all allegations will wait and see how it plays out, but it's really difficult because only 13 days now to the election and the prime minister can't deal with it. he can sound cross and angry like he did in that clip from bbc question time last night, but he can't do anything yet. or he seems he can't do anything yet until he knows how this will play yet until he knows how this will play out. the big question next might be will the gambling commission interview the prime minister? because the beginning, the original stone in the pond which created the ripples going out , was the which created the ripples going out, was the prime minister's choice to call the election. who did the prime minister tell about the election date and who did they tell? and once you've asked the prime minister that
3:15 pm
question, well, it's another big issue altogether. he's now talking to authorities about a gambling scandal when he should be trying to win votes for people like here in essex . people like here in essex. >> absolutely right. if rishi sunak can be the supersedure of that first piece of information, chris, it will get worse and worse . talking about dodgy worse. talking about dodgy figures around money, chris came to my attention today, new figures out about the national debt £2.7 trillion, chris hope, the highest level since 1961. a further £15 billion borrowed last may. and chris, the figure that caught my eye. astonishing figure . britain now spending £25 figure. britain now spending £25 billion every single month on benefits . benefits. >> these figures are eye—watering let's say them again £2.7 trillion. last month on national debt, we borrowed 15 billion in may and we spend 25 billion in may and we spend 25 billion a month every month on welfare . now, what the party is
3:16 pm
welfare. now, what the party is going to do about that in the election campaign ? well, not election campaign? well, not much labour is silent on this matter. the tories say they're going to cut, £4 billion next yean going to cut, £4 billion next year, 4 billion next year. we're spending 25 billion every month on it. that is a fraction of the annual total that will rise to 12 billion by 2029, 2030. and all that will do is put the welfare bill back to where it was before the covid pandemic. i'll be interviewing later on. sir keir starmer, the labour leader, and one question i will be asking him is about welfare . be asking him is about welfare. why is he happy to go after tax avoiders, tax evaders? but not, apparently not, touch this booming balloon ballooning, welfare bill? it is a choice he's making in office. he wants to be prime minister. we have to ask him about it. i'll do it for you, martin. >> thank you very much, chris. oh it is ballooning and it is blooming massive. make sure you ask that question, chris. always ask that question, chris. always a delight to have you on the show and let's get more on that tory betting scandal now, because i'm joined by the writer and broadcaster emma webb. emma,
3:17 pm
welcome to the show. the astonishing thing about this, emma, is that once again, another day. only 13 to go, sir keir starmer getting absolutely no scrutiny on any of his policies, no cross examination, no microanalysis of, of taxation of, of britain , of the energy of, of britain, of the energy policy, nothing at all. since again and again and again during this campaign, emma webb the tories have simply handed sir keir starmer the gun to shoot them with well, as as we shall see this evening, with chris hope questioning the prime minister, even if it's only, for 12 minutes, the 12 minutes the or journalists have been allocated el—sisi will get some scrutiny then. >> so that's some good news. gb news will have their, have their thoughts and questions put to the prime minister, put to keir starmer. but look, i mean, things can't possibly get any worse for rishi sunak. but at the same time we keep seeing it does just somehow keep getting worse. and worse, you're right, keir starmer isn't getting, very
3:18 pm
much scrutiny. and in many ways, he's even said it himself. he's surprised to see how, how well the labour party are doing in the labour party are doing in the polls, and that is entirely , the polls, and that is entirely, i think, because of, conservative failures, because , conservative failures, because, he if he wins this victory, it will be one of the most undeserved victories, i think possibly in british democratic history , but yes, of course, i history, but yes, of course, i mean, he's he's not receiving the sort of scrutiny that he should be, we saw last night on question time, fiona bruce putting, i think, quite robust questions to rishi sunak in a way that she didn't to the other leaders , and him being given leaders, and him being given a keir starmer being given free rein to sort of ramble on with his usual anecdotes that we've all heard time and time again, he didn't mention i don't think that his father is a toolmaker, but i think he did mention that his sister or something is a nurse. so, you know, he's he's he's being given a lot of leeway
3:19 pm
here. and he has been scrutinised a little on his comments on jeremy corbyn, last night on question time. but frankly , it isn't enough. and frankly, it isn't enough. and we're going to see the results of this when we have prime minister keir starmer and, and we'll see exactly, exactly what we've signed ourselves up for when it's too late . when it's too late. >> and, emma, perhaps the honeymoon period for sir keir starmer might end as soon as he gets into office. if he does, you may have heard their record national debt £2.7 trillion, £25 billion every single month on benefits, an astonishing figure. £15 billion extra borrowed last month alone to keep the economy afloat. who will the labour party blame when they get into power? when this carries on? >> and who will the snp blame when the labour party is the is the is the government? because, i think it's been as we saw last night on, on the debate there
3:20 pm
with john swinney. it's always been their tactic to just blame the conservatives or brexit, or the conservatives or brexit, or the for english everything for so long. so it's going to be a very interesting dynamic , very interesting dynamic, particularly after keir starmer has, has said that he won't go into those talks on, on, on, another independence referendum. but yes , i think one of the but yes, i think one of the standout things about last night's debate , as well as this night's debate, as well as this entire campaign is the mediocrity of the leaders across all parties. and you have to ask yourself, and keir starmer answers questions like an ai chat bot, and i don't think that he's somebody that can be trusted with, with our national debt, with any serious issues at all. last night he refused to commit to any distinct cap on immigration and i think that the pubuc immigration and i think that the public deserve at least some kind of ballpark figure. and i think for me, the thing that really stood out about last night's debate were his comments
3:21 pm
on, jeremy corbyn and the fact that he effectively seemed to be saying that at the time he backed corbyn and he backed those manifestos because he was running in the labour party, and he wanted to be elected . and now he wanted to be elected. and now the message i think that that sends or at least should send to the british public is that this is a man who is a cynical politician who will say anything to get elected, and therefore cannot be trusted either to stick to his word. or that he really means the things that he's saying. so he's given he's given a lot of weasely answers to questions like the question that was raised last night about rosie duffield and his his views on sex and gender. he's trying it's very, very clear, that he is trying to get elected. and it's very and that's the reason why he's saying the things that he's saying. but it's also , i he's saying. but it's also, i think, very important to note that this campaign is different from previous campaigns in that it's almost being run in a way thatis it's almost being run in a way that is , is semi—presidential, that is, is semi—presidential, and we don't know how long keir
3:22 pm
starmer is going to be able to keep the lid on the left of the party. he says he's happy to be their bogeyman. he's happy to be hated by the far left in his party. but we don't know how long he's going to last and what labour party we might end up with by the end of their first term, or possibly second term. and if the conservative party and, and their period in power is anything to go by that teaches us that, you could end up with innumerable leaders, we could end up with wes streeting, we could end up with angela raynen we could end up with angela rayner. we don't know what's going to happen. so i think people need to wise up and try to extricate themselves from, very rightly, all of the correct criticisms of the conservative party and sort of wake up to the reality of what a labour government would pose as an alternative . alternative. >> okay, we have to leave it there. emma webb, expert analysis as ever. thank you very much for joining analysis as ever. thank you very much forjoining us on the show. much for joining us on the show. now you can hear lots more from sir keir starmer when he does

3:29 pm
weekend. on the sunday, he told his friends that he would be leaving with a group of people whom he'd met on that day . we whom he'd met on that day. we now we know that he posted a snapchat the following morning, around 730, of himself holding a cigarette and after that it becomes a little bit more unclear. his friend lucy, whom he was in tenerife with, says she received a phone call from him around 8:15, where he said he'd missed a bus and was therefore going to attempt to walk back to their accommodation, a journey which we now know would have taken him around 11 hours on foot. she also said he'd said to her on the phone, quote he was lost in the phone, quote he was lost in the mountains. he wasn't the phone, quote he was lost in the mountains . he wasn't aware the mountains. he wasn't aware of his surroundings. he desperately needed a drink and his phone was on 1. shortly after this, he's phoned, then did cut off last showing his location in the rural ditan park in tenerife , if you look at the in tenerife, if you look at the satellite pictures of that area, it's very rocky. it's very remote, certainly terrain. i'm sure that jay would be unfamiliar with in the last hour or so. we've had an update from
3:30 pm
the police who are investigating this over in tenerife. they say that on this fifth day, they've been paying close attention to the barranco madre del agua, which is a river at the bottom of a ravine where officers have been seen today using sticks to sift through fallen dead palm trees. for any kind of information on this fifth day, of course, jay's mother, debbie, is out in tenerife as well, helping as much as she can with that search effort. she said yesterday this has been an absolute living nightmare and that she just wants her baby back now. that is a sentiment that's shared here in oswaldtwistle. his friends, family, members of the local community gathering together here yesterday in the heart of oswaldtwistle at the methodist church where there was a service held, there were candles lit. they put up blue ribbons. here you can see some of them behind me. they're dotted all over this small lancashire town as a symbol of positivity and a symbol of positivity and a symbol of positivity and a symbol of hope. they they exchanged messages begging for

moment together. >> more than ever, it's important to hear all sides as you make your decision in the run up to polling day. >> this is gb news the people's channel >> this is gb news the people's channel, britain's election . channel. >> welcome back. your time is 338. i'm martin daubney renee on gb news now, with less than two weeks to go until polling day, political leaders of all stripes are travelling the country to make their pitches to voters. the liberal democrats are hoping to make significant gains in the so—called blue wall. when voters head to the polls in a couple of weeks time, and speaking to reporters earlier today, sir ed davey claimed his party has learned valuable lessons from their time in the coalition government. >> you know , i've taken two big >> you know, i've taken two big lessons from that as i've reflected on that. the first is to never make promises you can't keep, and that's why we've costed our manifesto. i think ,
3:39 pm
costed our manifesto. i think, in more detail than any other party. i've been very cautious in our estimates, so we can deliver on the health and care package. we can deliver on cost of living challenges, but also that i knew i knew the party had to rebuild trust. and we've been trying to do that over the last few years listening to people to what their biggest concerns are. and they absolutely are on health and care. they are on things like the cost of living and things like sewage, where we've, as as liberal democrats have led the debate. >> and we'll hear from the labour leader, sir keir starmer, on gb news this evening. you speak to our political editor, chris hogue, in our vote 2024 the leader special. and that's from 7 pm. exclusively live on gb news this evening. now there is one part of the uk where the election campaign is very , very election campaign is very, very different to the rest of the nation. and that is northern ireland. and to get the latest on what's happening there with 13 days to go until we go to the polls, i'm joined by our northern ion reporter, dougie beattie draghi. welcome to the

show. nor the line played a crucial role, of course, in 2017 that supply and confidence deal with the dup . a price of £1 with the dup. a price of £1 billion propped up the theresa may regime. this time it's been a bit quieter. tell us what's happening . happening. >> well, it is quieter, martin and it hasn't really got into gear yet at all. >> in fact, only this morning we were seeing, i think it was the third manifesto launch this morning that was of the tuv . morning that was of the tuv. >> they're very closely linked with reform uk and of course reform uk weren't going to stand here at all until the dup accepted the framework document, which reform would say holds us out of the uk and total with trade deals etc. so that launched this morning. >> jim allister and ben habib launching their, electoral campaign . campaign. >> and that is actually one of the crucial things about this campaign because now what you have is three unionist parties
3:41 pm
in northern ireland. you have the ulster unionist party, the democratic unionist party and the tuv. never mind some of the independents that are running and amongst them. >> but there's 18 seats up for grabs here. currently sinn fein holds seven. >> the dup hold eight, the sdlp hold two and the alliance party one. >> now the alliance party is a neutral party. it's neither nationalist or unionist, but when you look at its voting record inside stormont, the most of the time it votes with the nationalists. about 70% of its votes go that direction. so what do you now have in areas like east belfast, where last time around gavin robinson, who's the current leader of the dup , won current leader of the dup, won by 1900 votes? if you can imagine if the tuv are standing in there, well of course that will come down much further. and quite possibly the alliance party could take that seat. the same thing will happen in east belfast and in areas like east
3:42 pm
antrim and again in fermanagh, south tyrone . but that brings us south tyrone. but that brings us then on to the nationalist side of the electorate, where, of course, sinn fein, just lost an amazing amount of support in the repubuc amazing amount of support in the republic of ireland during those eu and local council elections because mainly of their stance on immigration and their opposition to the rwanda deal. i mean, i've been talking to republicans out and about, and they're all telling me the same thing, that they would quite like a rwanda deal. not all of them, but quite a few of them who i was actually surprised to hear saying that because, of course, northern ireland is a very small country. it only has about 2 million people in it, and our services now are completely stretched. and then we have boundary changes in some areas. so the likes of south belfast is now travelling straight on up into areas like carryduff, the area of strangford where i'm standing and now that area goes right out into killyleagh. so there's lots of unknowns here. and enoch powell famously said of northern
3:43 pm
ireland, you could stick a flag on a donkey and it would get elected this time around. not for sure . and i would imagine for sure. and i would imagine that the alliance party, by doing absolutely nothing, just keeping quiet, may take 2 or 3 seats here away from the dup, the sdlp's one to watch as well, especially with sinn fins vote. will their voters come out for them and sinn fein even their manifesto launch was very, very slim , their, their whole slim, their, their whole manifesto itself was very, very quiet and they are to regrouping at this minute in time. >> suburbs of dougie beattie bang on the money. an excellent summary of the political landscape in northern lie—in. thank you very much for joining us on the show. now we are the people's channel, and so we want to know what the great british pubucis to know what the great british public is thinking ahead of this general election. big issues such as nhs waiting lists, the impact of immigration, the cost of living crisis and crime and policing . our reporters have policing. our reporters have been to meet voters from all

3:45 pm
jackets, whisky. you know that. that's pretty much about it. we've got to get back to manufacturing, housing. we have to have more housing, particularly social housing. most of it was sold off. we need to be building. it's going to be my first vote ever for the green party yes, it's a protest vote, but i'm voting for them to do well in the next election because i think that when people see that people are voting for the green party in this election, next time, they will think , well, actually, maybe think, well, actually, maybe they are viable for government . they are viable for government. >> is your son's your son cream giving you as much protection as you think? well, i've got some worrying for news you on the way, but don't worry, there's also some great value solutions . also some great value solutions. i'm martin daubney on gb news, britain's news

3:50 pm
organisation , which now which organisation, which now which carried out spot checks on 26 sunscreens and found that three lotions from calypso sun, bondi sands and asda did not pass all of the tests . now, asda said it of the tests. now, asda said it didn't recognise these results and recent tests by an external provider had confirmed its products had a sun protection factor of 31.5. calypso sun said all its products are carefully and independently tested and have passed eu standards and regulations , and bondi sands did regulations, and bondi sands did not respond to which, for a comment. well gb news, south west england reporter jeff moody is enjoying the sunshine. there is enjoying the sunshine. there is of it on the beach there at instow beach in north devon . instow beach in north devon. geoff, you're putting on your best sunshine face. but anyway, let's get back to this which report people at this time of yeah report people at this time of year. finally the sun is out. they turn to protection. are the claims on the labels all they're cracked up to be? and where is the good value?
3:51 pm
>> well, where is the sun? is the first question i'd like to ask. there's very little of it down here in north devon at the moment. it's actually quite cold and there was a spot or two of rain come to the beach. they say you'll have a lovely day , but you'll have a lovely day, but yes, this is very worrying, isn't it? that actually we can't believe what we read on the packets, which analysed 26 different types of sunscreen using what they describe as an intern as an international standard method in an independent laboratory. and they found out that four in particular failed to meet the test, failed to live up to what they say on the packet. now those are asda's protect sun lotion factor 30 high calypso's press and protect factor 30. bondi sands factor 50 and also fragrance free sunscreen lotion. they didn't come anywhere near the standards that they advertise on their packets. well asda has come back and said look
3:52 pm
they don't recognise these results. they don't believe them. they think there's nothing wrong with their product . but wrong with their product. but calypso has said their products, as has been , has passed the eu as has been, has passed the eu requirements. the eu regulations and which has come back and said well, barely . you can barely well, barely. you can barely muster two thirds of the protection that you claim on your packets, if you want to get one that does work, which says the best one out there is a very cheap one, go cheap when it comes to sunscreen , they say comes to sunscreen, they say little little's seen sun spray factor 30. that one, according to which triumph left. and that's only £3.29 for 200ml. so that's only £3.29 for 200ml. so that's the one to go for. or aldi does one as well, called lacura factor 30. that's sun lotion. that's only £2.49. so the message does seem to be go cheap rather than spend that extra money on posh products . extra money on posh products. well, which says in a statement it's incredibly concerning that some big brands have failed our
3:53 pm
tests and did not offer the level of sun protection. protection claimed on the packaging. however, it's great to see cheaper , top quality to see cheaper, top quality sunscreen available on the high street. but of course there is a serious side to this . with that, serious side to this. with that, cases of skin cancer are on the rise and with temperatures rising too, it's very important that you can understand and that you can trust what you you see on the packets. when it comes to sunscreen . well, which has, sunscreen. well, which has, issued some advice, some further advice, it says, basically don't rely on sunscreen at all. always. plenty of, clothing to cover yourself up. always go for factor 30 or above, because you really don't know whether a factor 30 is going to be a factor 30 is going to be a factor 30 is going to be a factor 30 at all. and they also say don't spend any longer in the sun than you would do if you didn't have any lotion on at all. so some mixed messages today, but the one thing is clear don't always believe what you see on the label. >> manager jeff moody. the best
3:54 pm
>> managerjeff moody. the best of his cheap stuff music to my ears. more money on beer and ice cream. thank you, jeff moody. now then, rishi sunak continues to be dogged by the tory betting scandal. sir keir starmer has accused the prime minister of a total lack of leadership over his decision not to suspend two candidates who allegedly place bets on the election date. we'll have more on that soon. i'm martin daubney on gb news and that's your weather. annie shuttleworth . shuttleworth. >> a brighter outlook with boxt solar sponsors of weather on . gb news. >> good afternoon. welcome to your latest gb news weather update brought to you from the met office. the rest of the day will be sunny and warm for eastern areas. cloudier and cooler though in the west. that's because we've got this approaching weather front. it's already brought some rain so far today for parts of northern ireland. now into parts of western scotland and ahead of it, cloud is starting to build
3:55 pm
and that will continue throughout the rest of the evening . a spell of wet weather evening. a spell of wet weather pushing through for parts of wales southwest england, much of northern england as well. through this evening, the east should stay dry this evening, but the cloud will arrive by tomorrow morning. there won't be too much in the way of rain for many central areas, but a lot of cloud around making for another mild night. however where it does clear up across parts of northern ireland and scotland , northern ireland and scotland, it will be a little bit fresher here by tomorrow morning . but here by tomorrow morning. but there'll be plenty of sunshine, particularly for northern and western areas of scotland. temperatures around 13 or 12 degrees first thing, but rurally in parts of northern ireland we could be down as low as five degrees very first thing, but plenty of sunshine. despite that slightly cooler feel across parts of wales. a bit of cloud around, but plenty of sunshine with to just the west of that weather front, so it's already starting to brighten up across southwestern areas of england by tomorrow morning as well . and tomorrow morning as well. and that cloud will lift up across eastern areas through the day. but that will also allow a few showers to possibly break out
3:56 pm
across eastern areas. but for most of us, it should be a dry day . there will be a most of us, it should be a dry day. there will be a bit more cloud around compared to friday across eastern areas, but still plenty of strong june sunshine and it will feel warm in that sunshine. highs of 2324, possibly 25 degrees if we do see some very long lived sunshine. but for many of us, temperatures into the low 20s, a little above average for the time of year. now through saturday evening, the next weather front approaches from the west. that will introduce again a lot of cloud, but that won't too last long as high pressure is building in, so there'll be more in the way of sunshine to come through sunday monday and temperatures climbing towards the high 20s by that warm feeling inside. >> from boxt boilers sponsors of weather on

i think that's immoral , and i i think that's immoral, and i don't think that looks i don't think it's right, and too often in this parliament, we've seen the conservative party, its only members of the conservative party looking like they're in it for themselves, not for for in pubuc for themselves, not for for in public service. and what's in the best, best interests of the country. >> meanwhile, rishi sunak is attempting to move on from the scandal, accusing labour of planning to change every rule they can to stay in power if they can to stay in power if they win the general election. the prime minister is urging the voters not to sleepwalk into the polls on the 4th of july. speaking at the launch of the conservatives manifesto for wales, he warned against falling into labour's trap. >> the man who tried to overturn the result of the brexit referendum , who twice urged referendum, who twice urged everyone to make jeremy corbyn prime minister and who ran on a series of pledges to be labour leader that he cynically then abandoned my friends because he

4:08 pm
grasping their self—serving, they're just in it for themselves . themselves. >> yes. hi, martin. well, that's right. i think there was a feeling that it does cut through the fact that we're discussing this, story , a full, nearly full this, story, a full, nearly full 36 hours after it. first broke, the issue of this candidate , the issue of this candidate, being investigated for allegedly putting money on the date of the election, her husband, who runs a national tory campaign in a policeman in close protection to rishi sunak falling on from craig williams, his former parliamentary aide. another candidate in this campaign for individuals linked or close to the prime minister, what do they know about and why were they, if they , you know, allegedly or they, you know, allegedly or they? williams himself admits , a they? williams himself admits, a flutter. the other three aren't commenting, but, you know, are they using their position to ennch they using their position to enrich themselves ? and that's enrich themselves? and that's the that's why you have echoes of this, mp expenses scandal back in 2009, when you had , mps, back in 2009, when you had, mps, following the rules, spending
4:09 pm
taxpayers money on things you might not expect , like taxpayers money on things you might not expect, like ginger crinkle biscuits or cat food, that kind of thing, because they're allowed to support their life in london. but it did jar with the idea that it was all about them. and i think that cut through is a bit like what's happening now and coming back early from the d—day commemorations in normandy as the prime minister did, though both these things are issues and they are there exposing, i think, the prime minister. why can't it be quicker? why isn't he suspending these candidates? as sir keir starmer says ? i'll as sir keir starmer says? i'll be asking sir keir starmer later when i interview him in essex in this pub. i'll ask him those exact questions. why why do you think the pm can't do this? why is he being what's holding him back, the problem he's got the prime minister is he doesn't know where this story ends because george osborne, the former chancellor, says that 40 people, four zero people knew about the date of the election before it was announced . but, we before it was announced. but, we know that the gambling commission has gone to all of the main bookies and said, send us details of anyone who put money in may, before the
4:10 pm
election was called on the date of the election. and we'll see. we'll check out if they are unked we'll check out if they are linked to rishi sunak. we'll check out if they are linked to rishi sunak . and i linked to rishi sunak. and i think the pm won't know the extent of this problem until that inquiry is finished. and that's why he can't really move and take any firm action until he knows how big the problem is. and he doesn't know it yet. and the clock is ticking and every day goes by, we're asking people like keir starmer, ed davey about a tory problem, about gambling or not, not about their policies. it's not great for the tory party >> it says, i was incredibly angry in incredibly angry when i learned about these allegations , learned about these allegations, in the same anger that many of you will feel and everyone was saying, and it's right that they are investigated thoroughly. these are serious allegations , these are serious allegations, right, that they're properly and thoroughly investigated as they are being independently, including a criminal investigation, as you'll be aware by the police. and what i would say is, if anyone is found to have broken the rules, they should face the full consequences of the law .
4:11 pm
consequences of the law. >> okay, good. i'm now joined by the former first secretary of state and the minister for the cabinet office, damian green. damian green, welcome to the show . may i ask you, how show. may i ask you, how frustrating is it this deep into a general election campaign? this is meant to be about scrutinee , about scrutinee, about cross—examination of sir keir starmer's policies , and instead starmer's policies, and instead were endlessly talking about this betting scandal. how frustrating is that for you, mr green? >> it is frustrating. >> it is frustrating. >> it is frustrating. >> i like i suspect you would rather be talking about the choice at this election , the choice at this election, the issues at this election. >> and, you know, it's a perfectly reasonable story for you to have as your your lead story. so yes, it's frustrating and but i think i just hope asked the question, you know, why hasn't the prime minister acted fully yet. >> the answer he answered it himself. >> it's because because there's an investigation still going on. and i think in all fairness, while that investigation is going on, you can't come to any
4:12 pm
conclusion about any particular individual . individual. >> and yet we spoke to a former secretary, press secretary to downing street for margaret thatcher earlier this week, and she was resolutely clear these people's feet wouldn't have touched the ground. they'd have been booted straight out and this hands your opponents from ed davey sir keir starmer and nigel farage. it hands them a gun to shoot you with because the conversation is simply, again about the conservative party's failings rather than, as i said, being able to properly cross—examine the labour party on taxation, on benefits , on on taxation, on benefits, on immigration. is this just a self—inflicted disaster here? >> well, i mean, i wouldn't use language like that, but it's clearly wrong if anyone is shown actually to have done this, then, you know, i, i completely share the prime minister's angen share the prime minister's anger, you know, not least because it is, as you say , a because it is, as you say, a distraction at this stage in a general election. >> and , you know, these things >> and, you know, these things happen, but they shouldn't
4:13 pm
happen, but they shouldn't happen. happen, but they shouldn't happen . and they certainly, you happen. and they certainly, you know, it's not great that they get revealed, two weeks before everyone goes to the polls . everyone goes to the polls. >> and you've been around since 1997. you survived tony blair, you won in that epic election. in terms of the campaigns you've seen through your years, mr green, do you think this is one of the worst, if not the worst, the tories have ever fought ? the tories have ever fought? >> you know, you can only judge campaigns at the end and i've also been around long enough to know that, you know, you have to go back very far. you know, the 2017 election, the polls , didn't 2017 election, the polls, didn't get right. the 2015 election, the polls didn't get right. so i think that, you know, actually the worst, danger in this campaign is for people just to start reporting on polls rather than start reporting on issues. and, you know, when, when people address the choice facing them about, as you say, tax were labelled tax them or immigration where labour's policies will be weaker than ours, then we have a very good story to tell and i'm
4:14 pm
quite happy indeed. you know, later today i'll be going out on the doorsteps telling it again and, you know , all campaigns can and, you know, all campaigns can only be judged in retrospect . only be judged in retrospect. >> okay. damian green, thank you very much for joining >> okay. damian green, thank you very much forjoining us. and thank you for your time. and let's go back now to our political editor, chris hope for some reaction to what was just said there by mr damian green, putting a brave face on chris. but you know as well as i know they must be furious inside that here they are. they're out there, they're knocking on doors, they're trying to win election and continually they're having to respond to self—inflicted gaffes . self—inflicted gaffes. >> yeah. damian green is right, of course, that we are not by discussing this issue with betting on the election. we're not putting pressure on sir keir starmer. of course , we'll try starmer. of course, we'll try and do that later for gb news viewers. but here's what sir keir starmer, the labour leader, had to say earlier and he must have enjoyed saying it. >> the prime minister is showing a total lack of leadership on this . let's look at what this. let's look at what actually happened in relation to actually happened in relation to a general election . the instinct

a general election. the instinct of these tories when the general election is called is not how do we make this work for the country? but how do i make some money? and that tells you a broader picture about politics of course, he should suspend these candidates. if they were my candidates , they'd be gone by my candidates, they'd be gone by now. out of the door. he needs to take tough action on. >> that sir keir starmer there, the labour leader again. we'll try and put him down on his policies. but gb news viewers. but this kind of self—inflicted, damage to the party caused by these other people around rishi sunak and he is furious. it's not him doing it. he is furious that this has happened. it only huns that this has happened. it only hurts him. and literally we are 13 or 12 days out from people voting. britain will decide very shortly on this party and the government as a whole. >> and chris hope, something else that caught my attention this afternoon. the ons has released the latest figures on british national debt, an astonishing . £2.7 trillion in astonishing. £2.7 trillion in debt, the highest since 1961.
4:16 pm
and chris, the figure that caught my eye and perhaps something you can ask sir keir starmer about later on. what would labour do about this astonishing £25 billion? every single month we're spending on benefits ? benefits? >> yes. i mean 2.7 trillion in debt. we've ballooned to this is this area which nigel farage likes to talk about a lot. he thinks that the westminster parties are obsessed about tiny figures, really, comparatively, compared to the elephant in the room, which is the scale of our national debt. we borrowed £15 billion in may. we spent 25 billion in may. we spent 25 billion on welfare, on benefits . billion on welfare, on benefits. now, if you look at the manifestos, labour's pretty silent on what it might do about that number. the conservative party wants to cut it by 4 billion, just 4 billion next year. billion, just 4 billion next year . and that's nothing like year. and that's nothing like the scale of it. the scale of it is well over 200 billion. so just 4 billion off. it is almost a rounding error that rises to 12 billion by 2029, 2030. and that takes it back to before
4:17 pm
covid in 2019. so i think the issue of benefits and where the welfare bill, the spiralling bill and what the government, what the two parties might do to tackle it is an issue we'll be exploring later with sir keir starmer, because it's an area where the conservative party thinks labour should. labour needs to take some action, but so far there's no evidence of that. >> hey great stuff, thanks for joining us live from essex, chris hope, political editor gb news. thank you very much. and you can hear lots more from sir keir starmer when he does speak to chris. hope our political edhon to chris. hope our political editor, later on in our vote 2024 the leader's special. that's from 7 pm. this evening, live here on gb news now. time now for the great british giveaway and your chance to make this summer really sizzle with over £16,000 worth of prizes to be won. that's 15 grand in tax free cash and a whole host of treats on top. now you've got to be in it to win it. here's all the details that you need. >> there's still time to win our summer spectacular with an incredible trio of treats and

4:22 pm
welcome back. your time is 422. i'm martin daubney. this is gb news now. later in the show, i'll get reaction to england's dismal draw with denmark at euro 2024 last night. and i'll ask the big question . should gareth question. should gareth southgate be sacked ? let me know southgate be sacked? let me know what you think. but moving on now, the prince of wales is celebrating his 42nd birthday. the princess of wales marked the occasion by posting this wonderful photo of william and their three children on social media and i'm joined in our studio in westminster by our royal correspondent cameron walker, who survived royal ascot. tell us about this picture. it's full of life, full
4:23 pm
of vitality and it was taken by kate. yeah. >> this is possibly one of the most informal photographs i've ever seen of members of the royal family. for those of you listening on radio, it's prince william and his three children jumping off a sand dune on the norfolk coast. the princess of wales took the photograph last month from the bottom of the sand dune, and it just shows a really lovely relationship, i think, that the three children have with their father . they're have with their father. they're all wearing very casual clothes with shorts and jumperjumpers with shorts and jumper jumpers and hoodies, and it's just a really lovely moment, considering that they've had such a difficult six months, particularly with prince william having to support his family through the princess's cancer diagnosis and all the rest of it . the westminster abbey also gave prince william a bit of a present by tolling their bells at 1:00 this afternoon, as because he is, of course, a future king. buckingham palace has also released a photograph of the king of the current king, prince of wales , with a baby, prince of wales, with a baby, prince of wales, with a baby, prince william as well. so all lots of celebrations and there's a wonderful picture. >> if i attempted that, i'd probably be in traction for about a month afterwards. leaping off a sand dune in norfolk. wonderful picture. but
4:24 pm
as you said, a great tonic to a very testing year, absolutely bursting with vitality . a very bursting with vitality. a very relatable picture. i'm sure many, many holidaymakers would would put themselves in their shoes. wonderful. yeah, i'd love to know how many takes it took for the princess to capture that perfect photograph, but i think that just shows how behind the scenes they are just any ordinary family because it is very intimate . very intimate. >> it is very fun and loving. this is the father's day photograph that we got on sunday from them. again, this could be in anyone's holiday album family album, couldn't it? and they are trying to perhaps be an ordinary family behind the scenes. >> yeah, just wonderful as you say. it's so relatable, so normal. and talking about that, he was at the football last night. so it's not not all rosy. yeah for the for the prince. he was at that dismal one one draw last night. >> yeah. >> yeah. >> he hotfoots it from ascot to get to germany for the euros. and he sat next to the king of denmark . he got a photograph denmark. he got a photograph with and a princess of denmark, as well as you say, it was a11 all draw. kensington palace
4:25 pm
tweeted. may the best team win before the match, and then of course it was a one all draw of hsi, the king of denmark and the new king of denmark, actually. and prince william there, prince william looking very stern . and william looking very stern. and of course. yeah. one all draw. so we'll see what happens with the rest of england. >> i mean, he's got every right to look very, very stern because i watched that match too. and actually prince william's mush as you can see on screen there looking very sombre, thinking very , very heavily about very, very heavily about england. that's exactly how millions of fans felt. he's of course, the president of the football association. and we're talking today about should we get rid of gareth southgate. but i digress . get rid of gareth southgate. but i digress. there he is. he's been very involved in the england camp. cameron, he's been giving pep talks to the players, been a part of the fabric out there in germany. >> yeah he absolutely was. this is pictures of him visiting them, visiting the england team before they went to germany for the euros. and he gave a bit of advice from prince louis, actually his youngest son, where prince louis advised the england players to eat double their helpings, to, to perform well on
4:26 pm
the pitch . to which, harry kane the pitch. to which, harry kane said, perhaps i'm not sure our nutritionists would think that's the best idea before we play football, but nonetheless , he football, but nonetheless, he very much said it to the england team. i wonder if he fun one if he has been the kind of lucky token because it wasn't the best performance. >> but that picture with the king of denmark, if we just get that back again. i saw a picture in the papers. they were at a football match when they were both teenagers together, and they were reunited together. a love of football . and i think love of football. and i think actually the king of denmark would have had the upper hand, so he'd be much more happy with the result that denmark got the danes one one. england expected to win that game , but look, he to win that game, but look, he loves football. he's an aston villa fan . he wears his heart on villa fan. he wears his heart on his sleeve. he takes his lad along to the match. another thing, i think, cameron, that makes him a very, very relatable prince. >> absolutely. and i'm sure if it wasn't a weak day in prince george wasn't at school, he would have gone with prince william to watch that england game because the danish princess accompanies her father , the king accompanies her father, the king of denmark. but it just shows the power of soft diplomacy
4:27 pm
between the two monarchies. yes, we're rivals on the football pitch, but the behind the scenes, as two countries, we're very much friends. >> superb. so thanks forjoining >> superb. so thanks for joining us, cameron walker, for all the latest on 42 years. young prince william, there he is at the football. thank you cameron walker. now let's look at that birthday photo again. just a quick look at these photographs again. they're so wonderful. look leaping off a sand dune in norfolk. and as i said, if i did that i'd be spreading my legs or at least retreating to the bar for a couple of hours after. but wonderful picture, full of life, very, very relatable. greater. thank you, cameron walker. now i've been asking you for your emails throughout the show, and you've been in touch in your droves. let's start on that topic of last night's performance by england against denmark , a match we were denmark, a match we were expected to win. a match if we did win, would have qualified to the next level to the knockout tournament. but we didn't do that. once again, same old england tortuously down to the final match. tortuously going
4:28 pm
one nil up and then sitting back and defending a lead against a lesser team. and once again we were caught out napping and once again asking the big questions about the future of england and what i throw out there at the top. is it time to sack gareth southgate now? i know it's mid—tournament. i know it will be calamitous, but there is precedent before the manager of the ivory coast was sacked, mid—tournament last year, they went on to win the africa cup . went on to win the africa cup. you've been getting in touch. vaughan has said this. three lions on your shirt. more like three lambs on your shirt. i'd rather we go out fighting like hons rather we go out fighting like lions than go down playing like lambs. utterly disgraceful. now now, gareth southgate said after the match last night it's not fair that we're so critical towards the team players. you know, there's so much pressure on them on social media these days. well, i'll tell you what, you get paid millions of pounds, turn twitter off, just forget about social media and bring home the bacon, especially
4:29 pm
against the danes. and there's been some funny jokes coming in comparing gareth southgate's character, someone who is such a guy who doesn't take any risks. a few jokes have come in. here's one here. gareth southgate is the kind of guy who would recommend betamax. it's a bit harsh, jake says this gareth southgate is the kind of guy who would wear a helmet on a peloton. of course a peloton being an indoor exercise bike in your front room that doesn't move . that's somebody who move. that's somebody who doesn't take any risks. if they wear a helmet and gareth southgate is the kind of guy who would wear a seatbelt on the toilet. again, that is another harsh joke. and somebody here, this is dave says simply, it's time to bring in alex ferguson. he take the job even though he's scottish. we need somebody with a bit of mettle. well, thanks for all your opinions . now for all your opinions. now thousands of taylor swift fans are descending on wembley as the pop

channel. >> the search forj. slater, the >> the search for j. slater, the british teenager who went missing while on holiday in tenerife, is now in its fifth day. helicopters, rescue dogs and drones have been used during the hunt for the missing 19 year old. j was last heard from on monday morning and one of his friends has hit out at spanish police, claiming they are not doing enough . well, i'm joined doing enough. well, i'm joined now by nick pisa, who's the senior global reporter at mailonline and is in tenerife. nick, welcome to the show. we've just been in inj slater's just been in in j slater's hometown. there's a very sombre mood on the ground , many, many mood on the ground, many, many questions being asked, nick about the veracity, the quality of the police investigation in tenerife. can we perhaps start with that? are those allegations and found that are they unfair ? and found that are they unfair? >> i think to a certain degree they probably are. >> martin, obviously the we can imagine the emotions that are going through jay's family and friends minds at the moment. >> but i can guarantee you i can assure you that the search teams
4:38 pm
are up there. >> they are there with, as you said, helicopters, drones and sniffer dogs as well. >> there's mountain rescue teams up there and they are combing through a200 zero foot gorge above the village of masca, which was where jay's phone was last picked up on monday morning. the signal was picked up. they're traced to a mast up on that hill, and they've been fanning downwards towards this, a trail, actually, that leads all the way down to the sea. and they've spent the entire day yesterday , the day before and yesterday, the day before and today going down there with as i say, dogs and drones. and they intend to they've had a break at the moment, but they intend to pick up again later on this afternoon. the only hitch they've had was yesterday. to be fair, when the weather was rather windy and there was a low cloud base up on top of the mountain, so they weren't able to go up in a helicopter or use drones. yesterday but i think, obviously emotions are running high because it's been five days now and there has been no sign of jay, but i think we can certainly say that the spanish police are taking this seriously, and they've said that they intend to carry on

searching for the foreseeable future over the weekend and into next week as well. and nick, those fragments of information we've been piecing together the cctv from the night club, text messages . messages. >> and here's a young man who was heading into unknown terrain, very, very rugged terrain, very, very rugged terrain, unknown to him, very hot and he was saying he was dehydrated and want a drink, wanted a drink. can you give us an indication of just how severe the weather is, how severe that terrain is, how difficult it would be for somebody to navigate themselves ? navigate themselves? >> well, it's very how can i put it? it's very isolated . yes. it? it's very isolated. yes. it's also, very rocky and but the trail is marked. if you wanted to follow the path that he would be able to see it. but. and also the weather, i don't think the weather is that much of an issue as it was in the tragic case earlier this month with doctor michael mosley in greece, where the temperatures there hit 40 degrees. here we're at an altitude of about 1000m, so it's considerably cooler than it is at sea level down at los

or as i say , the last contact or as i say, the last contact with him, with his friend lucy. lucy law was via a snapchat, a couple of snapchat images that she that he sent to her, in around about eight, 9:00 on, on monday morning. and these showed him at an airbnb in the village of masca, which is about 19 miles from playa das americas , miles from playa das americas, where he was at that that rave held at that nightclub . and held at that nightclub. and we've been up there and that b&b is now empty. but locals there have told us that there were two british men staying there last weekend. and friends of jay, as of jay's, have told us that he went up there once the after party had finished, he drove up there and he went to these two, to the house where these two guys were staying. and we understand that the police have spoken to them and they've now been released. i'm not released, sorry. they've been questioned as part of the investigation and they've been allowed to return to the uk and some of jay's friends are perhaps wondering whether that was perhaps slightly too early and they should have been, asked to remain on the island pending the

investigation. although i should say there is no suggestion of any foul play at all at this moment. >> okay, an excellent summary there. thank you very much for joining us live from tenerife. nick pisa , who's a senior global nick pisa, who's a senior global reporter at mailonline . thank reporter at mailonline. thank you very much for joining us. appreciate it . now coming you very much for joining us. appreciate it. now coming up, keir starmer has accused rishi sunak of a total lack of leadership by failing to suspend conservative candidates over betting allegations. we'll be speaking to a labour shadow minister on the latest on this story on martin daubney, on gb news, britain's news channel

about six, 630. and apparently she does a nice long concert as well. so you get a bit of value for your money. but of course it's all about the money today, mayor khan very, very happy that we've got all of these thousands of people coming to london. >> hey, superb. thank you ladies. and they're live at wembley stadium with a bunch of very, very excitable swifties . very, very excitable swifties. thank you, ray anderson. superb stuff. now, we've had a quick load of emails from you throughout the show. been asking you about politics, asking you about football and about that interview that . our political interview that. our political edhon interview that. our political editor, chris hope, has tonight with sir keir starmer, because there's a feeling amongst the electorate that sir keir starmer has escaped a lot of scrutiny on this campaign trail. a lot of that, of course, is because things keep happening to rishi sunak, the d—day commemoration he left earlier that gave the labour party endless headlines to play with again, allowed them to play with again, allowed them to escape scrutiny . and now the to escape scrutiny. and now the betting scandal once again , no betting scandal once again, no scrutiny of sir keir starmer or his policies. on the topic of politics, gene says this there
4:52 pm
are only three questions to ask any candidate, and that includes sir keir starmer. what are they going to do when will they do it and how will they fund it ? gene, and how will they fund it? gene, thatis and how will they fund it? gene, that is brutally honest and you're dead right. but these are the kind of questions that sir keir starmer is evading. we don't know how much this this british energy plan is going to cost. we hear a lot about 650, 65,000 jobs being created. but when i asked the labour minister, what are those jobs where are they? what will they pall-7 where are they? what will they pay? when will they start? how many will be in my constituency? they simply don't have those answers. that's the kind of detail that many feel the labour party are evading, because the conservatives keep handing them this open goal to hit them with another one. here is from frank. frank says this i would like to ask mr starmer what will he do to stop the boats ? and is the to stop the boats? and is the labour welsh government doing a good job? great question frank, and i don't think there is an
4:53 pm
answer to that. they they talk seriously about going down stream, smashing the criminal gangs. but the conservative party have been trying that for years. they've also tried to do that deal with france. and by the way, what happens if macron has called a snap election in july, loses that election to the front national, to the national rally ? beg your pardon? le pen's rally? beg your pardon? le pen's party, they have said they're going to defy the european union on immigration. they're going to refuse to take those quotas from brussels . that would mean and brussels. that would mean and also they said five years benefits freeze on anybody entering france. would that mean they were then coming over the channel and even greater numbers to britain? and what would an incoming labour government do to work with that? these are questions we simply don't know. the answers to. now, don't miss that big interview with labour leader sir keir starmer. he'll speak to our political editor, chris hope, and our vote 2024 the leader special. and that's

5:09 pm
earlier. >> he says . i was incredibly >> he says. i was incredibly angry. incredibly angry when i learned about these allegations in the same anger that many of you will feel and everyone watching , you will feel and everyone watching, and it's right that they are investigated thoroughly. these are serious allegations, right? that they're properly and thoroughly investigated as they are being independently, including a criminal investigation , as you criminal investigation, as you will be aware by the police. and what i would say is, if anyone is found to have broken the rules, they should face the full consequences of the law . consequences of the law. >> and that's all you can say right now. until he knows the full scale of what has happened here, he can't do much more than that and can't take action. he's not even sure whether members of his own cabinet have bet on the july 4th election, although we do think many of them will. fact. all of them, i think, were kept in the dark about the actual date. not surprisingly, sir keir starmer, the leader of the opposition, the man tipped to be prime minister according to be prime minister according to the polls in just two weeks time, has been making hay out of
5:10 pm
the pm's discomfort. >> the prime minister is showing a total lack of leadership on this. let's look at what actually happened in relation to actually happened in relation to a general election. the instinct of these tories when the general election is called, is not how do we make this work for the country? but how do i make some money? and that tells you a broader picture about politics. of course, he should suspend these candidates . if they were these candidates. if they were my candidates, they'd be gone by now. out of the door. he needs to take tough action. >> so keir starmer, they're talking about tough action that he doesn't need to take. it's all on rishi sunak. it's not very easy being the tory leader right now . right now. >> so chris hope you're in a pub there in essex. sir keir starmer is about to sit down with you. you're about to ask him some probing questions. chris. i wonder if that conversation might turn to the state of the national debt figures out today. a staggering £2.7 trillion of national debt. that is the figure, sir keir starmer is
5:11 pm
going to inherit. when liam byrne famously left that letter to david cameron in 2010, saying there's no money left now, there's no money left now, there's really no money left . so there's really no money left. so what will the labour party do? how will they pay for their policies? and chris in particular, one that really leapt out at me today, £25 billion every single month were spending on benefits. so keir starmer won't be able to blame the tory party anymore when he gets in power. what's he going to do about things like that ? to do about things like that? >> that's right. the scale of national debt now at 2.7 trillion last month, the government borrows £15 billion a month just to pay the interest on the debt. it's eye—watering. it's not a topic ever discussed in the election campaign. it frustrates people like nigel farage if you feel it should be. and so the parties really are rowing about tiny numbers in comparison. i mean billions of pounds, don't get me wrong. but in comparison, small numbers . if in comparison, small numbers. if you look at the welfare bill, as
5:12 pm
you look at the welfare bill, as you say, 25 billion spent last month on welfare, it's up 2.2 billion. martin, because of the rise in inflation, inflation and therefore that led to an increase in benefits to allow people on benefits to carry on with their standard of living , with their standard of living, the debt is now the highest level since 1961. what are the parties doing at the election ? parties doing at the election? well, the labour party isn't talking about welfare in the same way. they're not saying they're going to cut that bill. i'll ask that question of sir keir starmer when i sit down for him for a pint shortly , but the him for a pint shortly, but the tories are saying they'll cut it by just 4 billion next year, rising to 12,000,000,000 in 2029, 2030. they say that will take the figure back to before 2019, before the covid pandemic meant that the big increase in the benefits has gone up a lot since then. but frankly, it's barely touching the surface of a problem which neither of the major parties which are set to form the next government are willing to properly tackle . willing to properly tackle. >> well, okay, chris, live from essex. you're about to take the
5:13 pm
gloves off and sit down with sir keir starmer. gloves off and sit down with sir keir starmer . get stuck in my keir starmer. get stuck in my old son, thank you very much. now don't miss that big interview with labour leader sir keir starmer. he will speak to that man there , sir chris hope, that man there, sir chris hope, in our vote 2024 the leader's special. that's from 7 pm. this evening here on gb news now. several conservative candidates have signed what's been called a hindu manifesto , so that hindu manifesto, so that campaigns for looser immigration rules for elderly hindus and religious workers. tory candidates bob blackman, theresa villiers, laura farris and amit jogia have all supported the manifesto , which was launched manifesto, which was launched earlier this month. it's a staggering story and i'm joined now by the man who broke it. it's gb news reporter charlie peters. charlie, thanks for joining us. how was what on earth is a hindu manifesto and why are these conservative candidates backing it? >> so the hindu manifesto was launched earlier this month by a group primarily called hindus for democracy, that we understand that several other
5:14 pm
organisations linked to british hindus were involved in producing this manifesto. it's over 30 pages long and it calls for several policies for the next administration and for the next administration and for the next round of mps to campaign for including more money for hindu temples, more money for faith schools, state funded faith schools, state funded faith schools. they also want so—called community consultation. whenever the government legislate on issues as they pertain to british hindus . and there's also hindus. and there's also a section on so—called microaggressions. section on so—called microaggressions . they say that microaggressions. they say that there needs to be a new law to deal with what they call hindu phobia, or anti—hindu hate , and phobia, or anti—hindu hate, and they list a collection of ideas where this could come into play. a lot of them are, on some contested political issues, but all in all, it's quite a factional, as you can imagine, and quite driven section all proposal for the hindu community and the national secular society told me that these sorts of
5:15 pm
sectional and sectarian political ambitions should not be recognised by politicians. but what's really controversial, and what i've drawn out from this report, is that several conservative candidates have signed up to a section in this manifesto, which is all encompassing on immigration. now a big part of the conservative message during this general election campaign has been about reducing our visa rules on dependents. now, the home secretary, james cleverly, said that he's reduced numbers by 300,000 on dependents. the manifesto says the tory manifesto says the tory manifesto says the tory manifesto says that they will reduce immigration in if they form the next administration. but this hindu manifesto that at least four conservative candidates have signed calls on the government to bring in looser immigration rules for elderly hindus, and they also asked the government to expand the religious worker visa. so for hindu priests, at the moment, it's a two year visa that can't be extended. the hindu manifesto signed by those
5:16 pm
conservative candidates says that should be raised to three years and to be extended up to five if necessary. so when i have raised this, obviously this is a contrast between the official conservative manifesto and what's available inside this particular, what many are calling sectarian campaign for specific hindu immigration rules. >> it begs several questions. the first of all, why on earth are we bowing to any community need surely all equal in british society? and secondly, is this just a blatant plea for votes? and secondly, thirdly, how on earth can candidates, conservative party members be seemingly swimming against the tide of government policy to tighten grips on immigration? >> charlie peters well, perhaps they just didn't expect anyone would actually read the manifesto. but we have and we've uncovered those policy gaps . uncovered those policy gaps. maybe they didn't read it themselves. when i've reached
5:17 pm
out to these candidates, they didn't give a response. but why are they doing it? why are they doing it ? why are they doing it? why are they doing it? why are are they doing it? why are they doing it ? why are they getting doing it? why are they getting involved in this campaign? well, we've seen quite a lot of concerning sectarian campaigns dunng concerning sectarian campaigns during this election campaign. let's not forget the muslim vote organisation , which is organisation, which is organising for votes around issues related to gaza . we've issues related to gaza. we've also seen another conservative candidate in trouble earlier this week after they wrote a letter to their constituents addressed to british pakistanis and kashmiris, saying who will speak for kashmir in parliament when i rose, when i raised this issue with some other tory campaigners , they said to me, campaigners, they said to me, who will speak for britain in parliament, charlie peters and other stonking exclusive great work. >> now we have a right of reply here. a spokesman for the conservative party said this our hindu community exemplifies the best of british values like family responsibility, enterprise and generosity. we have some of the strongest legislation in the world when it, which aims to protect hindus from both racially and religiously motivated crime in
5:18 pm
government. the conservatives have worked with police and community partners to monitor and combat hatred towards hindus, and in 20 2324, we provided £3.5 million for protecting places of worship , protecting places of worship, including for hindu temples. we remain committed to defending freedom of religion or belief for all and promoting respect and tolerance . now search for and tolerance. now search for missing teenager jay slater is now in its fifth day. i'm going to cross live to tenerife . i'm martin daubney on news, britain's news channel
5:19 pm
5:20 pm
5:21 pm
welcome back. your time is 522. i'm martin daubney. this is gb news now. coming up after england's draw. a dismal draw against denmark last night. is there any hope for gareth southgate's team to bring it home this year ? or to bring it home this year? or they once again throw it all
5:22 pm
away before that, the search for jay slater, the british teenager who went missing while on houdayin who went missing while on holiday in tenerife, is now in its fifth day. helicopters, rescue dogs and drones have been used during the hunt for the 19 year old jay was last heard from on monday morning. one of his friends has hit out at spanish police claiming they are not doing enough. well, i'm joined now by daniel hammond, who's a reporter at the sun live from tenerife. daniel, welcome to the show . so we've been in jay show. so we've been in jay slater's hometown earlier on today. the mood on the ground there is very, very sombre. lots of criticism about the police operation in tenerife. what can you tell us about the latest in the search for jay slater ? the search for jay slater? >> hello, martin. >> hello, martin. >> so we have seen drones, helicopters and search teams here on the ground scouring a massive area . massive area. >> it's completely arid here and it can be completely deceiving
5:23 pm
for people in terms of temperature, in terms of the height of some of the ravines here. so on the ground you can see the search teams, but because the area is so large, it's almost impossible to keep track of these people all the time. but today the search teams have centred in on a spot where jay was last seen and he made contact with a friend on monday morning in a small village where he was staying in an airbnb. so we've seen the search teams today scour the area and move into this ravine, which is about 2000ft deep. >> and daniel, as we understand it, it gets it's not as hot in this area as it may have been where michael moseley was , and where michael moseley was, and it gets very cold at night. and jay slater was dressed for a night out, not dressed for those kind of conditions. his phone went dead almost immediately, and also his last message saying he was feeling dehydrated and in need of a drink . need of a drink. >> yes, yes. »- >> yes, yes. >> and it can catch people out
5:24 pm
by surprise, especially if you're not able to have access to a car or any form of transport. so it appears that jay's phone has died. he may have become disorientated and stepped off the road here, where cars might have been passing by into the more rural areas. and that's where he might have got lost . if you're dressed to go to lost. if you're dressed to go to a party as jay was, it could be incredibly cold here. one minute it's hot. next minute you can feel a slight spitting of rain, and at night the temperature is really draw in. >> and in terms of the criticisms that we're hearing from people in britain, friends of jay z's, regarding the police activity , the operation out activity, the operation out there. daniel, do you think that's a bit harsh or are they putting in a good shift? are they doing their very, very best in this manhunt? >> from what i can see, i think they're doing the best with what they've got. you know, we're not talking about a massive, massive, organisation of people here. there's volunteers getting
5:25 pm
involved. i can understand where criticism would come in because it's taken several days and we still don't have answers. but from what i've witnessed , the from what i've witnessed, the staff here are doing the best that they can. >> and in terms of that mood, daniel, as we said in britain, a sombre mood on the streets of jay'5 sombre mood on the streets of jay's hometown. what's the mood like amongst the forces who are searching? are they still optimistic or as time goes on, are things looking slightly less so ? so? >> there is still an element of optimism and there's , you know, optimism and there's, you know, at this point there's nothing to suggest otherwise in terms of , suggest otherwise in terms of, you know, what has been found. however, i did speak to a member of the search team earlier. one of the search team earlier. one of the search team earlier. one of the local authorities, and he told me that there was an element of frustration among him and his colleagues that they haven't been able to find a single thing pointing them to where jay is . where jay is. >> okay, the story goes on. thank you for joining >> okay, the story goes on. thank you forjoining us and
5:26 pm
thank you for joining us and thanks for sharing that piece of insight information. daniel hammond, who's a reporter at the sun there live from tenerife. thank you for your time. thank you. now you know me. i'm not someone who's shies away from the truth. and so i'm going to give it to you straight. gareth southgate should be sacked. yes, england were dreadful. truly awful. and yesterday's one one draw with the great danes of denmark. and that's two poor performances in a row now at euro 2024. and though they'll almost certainly qualify for the last 16, i honestly can't see them going much further with southgate in the big seat . well, southgate in the big seat. well, i'm joined now by sports journalist ben jacobs, who's in germany for the tournament, and he joins me now. so, ben, i know you're going to tell me i'm mad. we're halfway through a tournament. what's the point? changing gaffer now? but the facts speak for themselves at the moment. the england team were like a headless chicken. gareth southgate is in control. i put it to you. he's simply not
5:27 pm
up to the task. >> well, i never call you mad, but i think it would be extreme to change the manager mid—tournament and ultimately we have to understand why england are not performing where southgate has come under criticism is tactically england have gone one nil up in both games and then completely gone into their shell at. the other thing is to just reliance on trusted players. you can't blame a manager in a knockout tournament, but trent alexander—arnold in midfield has not worked . and the other big not worked. and the other big thing is on that left hand side. kieran trippier, who's a right back for newcastle playing on the left hand side because luke shaw's been injured and that means he's not really able to complement phil foden who stayed out in wide areas. bellingham's playing central instead so we've not seen the best on that left side out of foden or out of kieran trippier and it's all led to something very disjointed. and one thing's for sure, england do not look like the favourites at the moment. the only upside is, as you said, they're going to get out of the group so there's only room for improvement from here.
5:28 pm
>> for now. ben jacobs people who ordinarily pretty moderate are steaming into the team at the moment. gary lineker described the team in a word i can't even repeat on daytime tv. not very often. i agree with gary lineker, but i think he was bang on the money. alan shearer was wading in saying the performance was woeful, roy keane saying these players look out of their depth and i put it to you when they play for their teams in the premier league, they are some of the best players in the world. foden was the premier league's player of the premier league's player of the year and yet when they put in the england team, they simply vanish. they're missing in action and that stops with the gaffer . gaffer. >> yeah, it's a different role for foden and that is on southgate , but he's choosing to southgate, but he's choosing to use bellingham more centrally so foden's out wide. we need to see him get into central areas. remember he's wide for man city as well, but he's encouraged with more freedom to come in centrally. there's definitely question marks. i think we came into the tournament thinking goals wouldn't be a problem and there were defensive frailties and actually goals are a
5:29 pm
problem, as is killing off games. so it's slightly ironic that we felt like mark gay would have pressure on him. he's been outstanding, whereas the front six were the best at the tournament , six were the best at the tournament, and six were the best at the tournament , and they've not tournament, and they've not proven to be as prolific as we thought . the other thing we need thought. the other thing we need to look at is within the squad . to look at is within the squad. are there changes and can gareth southgate back form players rather than ones that he's been loyal to? because anthony gordon, cole palmer was sitting on the bench in that denmark game looking sullen. cole palmer just about the best player in the premier league last season. zero minutes at euro 2024. and that, i think, is why fans are getting frustrated because they feel like england do have the tools to go on and win this and be more attractive and win games comfortably. but southgate sticking to his tactics, he's sticking to his tactics, he's sticking to his style , he's sticking to his style, he's sticking to his style, he's sticking to his favourites and that might end up costing england the chance of winning this tournament. >> isn't that the problem, though ? it's like he's got though? it's like he's got a plan and he's sticking to it and he made the wrong call with trent alexander—arnold in midfield. they're playing him out of position. he has been.
5:30 pm
he's been substituted in both matches and i'm doing the time warp here. i'm grizzled, i'm long in the tooth. ben jacobs i remember shouting at the tv when john terry passed the ball sideways to stevie g. we're one nil up. we sit deep, we invite disaster . we go to a draw. if disaster. we go to a draw. if not behind, it's like doing the time walk. when are we going to learn? don't defend the one nil lead against a team like denmark. get in there. get stuck in, get at them and bring home the bacon . the bacon. >> yeah, i think the only devil's advocate argument, even though fans will feel that england have been poor and agree with a lot of your points, is just it's a knockout tournament and if they win it ugly, but they bring the tournament back to england, then these first two games will be forgotten about. so we've not seen any evidence of england living up to their billing as favourites, but it could be worse in the sense that you could be in italy's position. you could be in croatia's position. they have at least got those four points and if they get out of the group, which they basically will now, and if they win the group, then you can almost forget about
5:31 pm
these first two games or use the negative to try and improve and make it a positive, because everyone in that england squad knows that they haven't lived up to their billing. but at least they're not going to get knocked out before the knockout stages. thatis out before the knockout stages. that is the only saving grace. >> okay, well don't speak too soon, ben. but also, just to prove i'm not completely mad, there is precedent for sacking there is precedent for sacking the gaffer and going on to win. that's the ivory coast. john louis gasset, that gaffer came in and they ended up winning the african cup. so there we go. i'm not quite as mad as a hatter. look, enjoy the rest of the tournament. i hope it's coming home until that point. at least enjoy the german beer. ben jacobs, thank you very much for joining us live from germany. there's lots more still to come between now and 6:00, and one supermarket has banned a rather unexpected item to crack down on shoplifting . and have they found shoplifting. and have they found the cure to baldness that's coming up male pattern baldness. but first, your latest news headunes but first, your latest news headlines with sophia wenzler.

5:43 pm
it sounds funny, but is there a serious side to it? record shoplifting costs retailers over £1 billion a year now, and i've got to say, bruce, i have seen a few grannies myself in my local shop stashing things away because it is quite easy just to go around. it's like one for the trolley, one for the granny basket, one for the trolley, one for the granny basket. >> yeah, i'm a bit like that one glass of wine and then the rest of the bottle. >> i'm i had not, i've never seen. i know i'm not saying it doesn't happen and of course it's, it's a bigger deflection at the cost of living crisis. do you remember for a while that lurpak there are other butters had alarms around it because people couldn't afford lurpak and they were stealing all that kind of stuff. so all joking aside, it is quite serious then that they're not maybe making ends to meet, and having to go, but it's a bit demoralising. you kind of think i've worked all my life and whatever, and now you're shoplifting with a shopping trolley. >> yeah, but . shopping trolley. >> yeah, but. but it's not just grannies that use these things.
5:44 pm
now hipsters use them too. hipsters think it's quite ironic to go around with a granny phone. maybe they're sort of stashing their quinoa and avocados in them. >> yes, i probably if you looked in one of their shopping trolleys, it would just reek of sourdough and judgement and resentment. so yeah . so resentment. so yeah. so i suppose then with the with the hipsters and their smashed toast, they're giving eps a bad name now by reclaiming the shopping bag. >> but what happened at this shop? it's in leyton in east london. it's not asda policy across the entire range. they're allowed to introduce their own security measures, and apparently it has worked. so when you go in with your granny trolley, you kind of check it in as if you're going to a disco. they give you a little raffle ticket and then you shuffle around, the store, presumably with your arthritic wrist that can't bear the weight of a basket. and then when you when you leave, you get your trolley bag. >> so it's like valet parking for your shopping trolley to go and get precisely the messages, it kind of got a vip. no wonder
5:45 pm
the hipsters are in on it. then it's the nearest thing they'll get to a valet service . get to a valet service. >> but on a serious point, apparently it has worked. the security at this store in leyton, the asda said they they get this happening 2 to 4 times every week. they've taken some people to the police, some of these gangster grannies, as they might be. it has worked. they've clamped down on these. want away grannies and it's now nipped it in the bud . in the bud. >> well i mean that is a good thing. but you've seen on social media as well that some people are just going in with holdalls. and it was a boots in london, i think, and they were just ramming all this stuff into it. and the shop assistants weren't doing anything. but if by virtue of parking your trolley at the doom of parking your trolley at the door, giving you a little ticket is preventing people from stealing things like benylin and cod liver oil, that's all. that's all good. >> of course, pensioners do buy other things. other than products that show that they're reaching the end of their time. but look , it has worked. bruce but look, it has worked. bruce devlin, thank you very much for

party. >> welcome back. it's 550. we're on the final final furlong of this friday. i'm martin daubney on gb news. now. here's a massive question . have massive question. have scientists taken a huge step towards finding a cure for baldness? well, researchers at manchester university, that's where i went to who identified a biological stress response that allegedly can cause people to go bald. now, the boffins there reckon that targeting a drug towards stopping the response could be a cure, no doubt a massively lucrative cure to . i'm massively lucrative cure to. i'm joined now by the health and social affairs editor at the sunday express , lucy johnson. sunday express, lucy johnson. lucy, you've got to find head of hair there. of course, you're not one of the 85% of men who are employed by male pattern baldness. but joking aside, this is a massive, massive market. it's worth billions of dollars, $9 billion per year. in fact , $9 billion per year. in fact, this industry, if there is a cure for baldness , is a it will cure for baldness, is a it will make a lot of men happy and b it
5:51 pm
will make these people very, very rich. >> absolutely . it's a it's one >> absolutely. it's a it's one of the holy grails of commercial medicine, like the cure for the common cold. >> and in fact, many less women . >> and in fact, many less women. but plenty of women are affected too, but less so . but, don't too, but less so. but, don't throw away your hats yet. it's really exciting . i have been really exciting. i have been communicating with the lead researcher on this today, and they have discovered the mechanism or a mechanism which can lead to hair loss, but it's early stages. so this was only lab based studies . and what they lab based studies. and what they now need to do is try and find a way to block that mechanism. and actually what they did, they were trying to grow hair in in a lab , and they used a drug to try lab, and they used a drug to try and promote hair growth, which actually they found made the hair dye , made the follicles hair dye, made the follicles sort of seize up and die and they think that this was caused by a stress response, caused by the drug . and if they can block
5:52 pm
the drug. and if they can block that and there are drugs out there that are trying to block that stress response, which are being used in in other diseases like brain diseases, they they think that they may this may be part of the puzzle and part of the way to solving baldness. and it is very exciting , the way to solving baldness. and it is very exciting, very interesting. but we're not we're not there yet . not there yet. >> and they're quite clear to say it won't make your hair grow back, but it could slow down you losing your hair. now, there are products at the moment you can take for that. you can take tablets and they have side effects, particularly around your virility, which concerns a lot of men. but 70% of women, sorry, half of women over the age of 70 also lose their hair. lucy. so if this breaks through and why not? and we've got a jab now, which basically makes you stop feeling hungry. the diabetes drug which now is used for all sorts of people. so why not this? surely it can happen. >> why not, i think there are, as you say, once your hair is lost, i think it's too late , but
5:53 pm
lost, i think it's too late, but the basic premise of trying to promote hair growth again in all the treatments pretty much is to stimulate those hair follicles, because after a certain time when you age, they sort of, seize up and they squash the follicles and the hair can no longer grow. so you've got laser treatments, you've got some drugs, you've got hair transplants as well, which is a different method. they've all got kind of problems . side got kind of problems. side effects can be painful. but if we could find a simple drug to target this, it would be it would be amazing. and very exciting. but you know, i think their researchers are not even saying to me today, how many years off we may be because i think they've got to be many steps before we go towards actually putting this into humans, because we don't know the effects, of course, of these drugs . so the effects, of course, of these drugs. so we're the effects, of course, of these drugs . so we're off. the effects, of course, of these drugs. so we're off. but, you know, it's good. it's good news. >> great stuff. let's leave it there. lucy johnson, thanks for joining us on a cure for baldness and talking about tearing your hair out. let's have one more email from dermot
