strip tonight. just hitting 9 a.m. there local time on wednesday. israel continues to intensify its attacks ahead of a likely ground assault. tonight a spokesperson with the israeli defense forces now says more than 1200 israelis have been killed since the fighting erupted on saturday. and officials in gaza say at least 900 people have died there following israeli airstrikes. >> around 150 people are being held hostage by hamas and other militant groups. some of them are americans. the white house says there are 20 us citizens who are unaccounted for. >> president biden promised unwavering support following a call earlier today with israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu. we stand with israel and we stand with israel. >> and we will make sure america has what it needs to take care of its citizens and defend itself and respond to this attack. there's no justification for terrorism and all the response i'm getting from israel

through songs and prayers. members of the synagogue, chabad of almaden gathered for an evening of unity and solidarity . the event on tuesday was called san jose stands with israel. >> what did we do with every challenge that came our way? we came together like we're doing here now. tonight elected officials joined in to show their support. >> our city will continue to stand for our diversity, for inclusion, for self-expression, for religious freedom, and against hate and discrimination in and violence. >> santa clara county district attorney jeff rosen was in israel six months ago, and we met many people from kfar aza, many very nice people, and some of them are dead and some of

in israel, the military is expected to launch a ground assault in gaza any time now, calling up 360,000 reservists. abc news reporter ian pannell is on the front line. if anyone had any doubts about what israel's intentions were, then this should dispel it. >> we've seen tank after tank, armored vehicle after armored vehicle and soldier after soldier to pour into this area. it's now looking like the start of a major land military operation. ian, there are american citizens there who are trapped in gaza and are pleading for help to get out, but so far have had no luck with the us embassy. >> i don't know if we're going to make it, but i am absolutely looking forward to the help of the us embassy. we are all here feeling abandoned. that and we're feeling that we're left alone. so we really looking for the us embassy to help the us citizens who are living in gaza.

the aerial assault on gaza is going around the clock. >> in fact, while a woman was being interviewed, there were at least two explosions that could be heard in the background. the impending ground assault that ian pannell was describing there could have dire consequences. >> let's continue our live team coverage with abc seven news reporter tim johns has more on the big piece of this entire battle, how the war is being viewed online. tim yeah, dan, if you've logged on to any social media platform over the past few days, you've likely been bombarded with posts and messages about the conflict in the middle east. >> i talked to several experts today about this battle happening online, as well as the significance it holds for both the war itself and everyone else watching from afar, fighting between israel and hamas continued to intensify on tuesday. but as the war rages on , on the ground, increasingly there's another battle happening and it's online. >> sunday and into the night, early monday was just a fire hose of information over

whelming. under the best of circumstances. and these are not good circumstances. >> rabbi howard rubin is the head of the jewish community high school of the bay in san francisco. he says since the war broke out several days ago, the amount of hatred and vitriol being spread online has exploded. his school even sent out an email to students parents urging them to protect their children from some of the harsh realities of war. it reads in part, there is a point at which graphic imagery is parallel, izing or traumatizing. we recommend you talk with your teens about their social media usage and discuss whether or not it makes sense to delete, even temporarily, social media apps such as tiktok and instagram to avoid inadvertent exposure to these graphic and potentially traumatic images. the violent rhetoric online is sadly nothing new, says grant keene, a professor of communications at cal state east bay. >> the intensification of smear campaigns and misinformation often happens in tandem with modern warfare, keene says.

>> in conflicts where emotions are extremely high, fake posts and videos are widespread. >> always look at the source, look at the sources source. if something seems a little bit off, then dig deeper. >> it's a view also shared by thomas plant, a psychologist at santa clara university. plan says while hatred online can impact anyone, even those with connections to israel and gaza are at particular risk. if you have a child in this situation, plant recommends talking to them very broad strokes and say, do you have questions about that? >> you know, what do you want to know about this? and to try your best to try to give that message that you're willing to talk to your children in a developmentally appropriate way ? >> with the war showing no signs of ending anytime soon, though, rabbi rubin says he's worried the online battle will only continue to get worse. >> nothing has been this grotesque in terms of its barbarism, in terms of its lack of humanity, and that's disturbing to absorb.

through and some drizzle as you will notice some snow showers in the sierra at the highest elevations. right now, all's quiet. we do have some fog forming. so here's a look at your 24 hour planner. tomorrow morning when the sun comes up, it's going to be a cooler start. 40s, 50s, patchy fog, but it is going to get really bright and sunny quickly. we're talking about by noontime, 60 4 p.m. it's a little warmer, breezy to gusty mid 60s to upper 70s. and then the temperatures come down just as the sun is setting. i'll be back to let you know exactly how long that warmth is going to last. coming right up. >> alma thank you. sandhya now new delopments about a ferris wheel potentially moving into fisherman's wharf tonight. the san francisco port commissioners are taking up a plan to move it across san francisco, but plenty of questions remain. the ferris wheel currently sits in golden gate park. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone is digging into the details of the proposal for this ferris wheel currently in san francisco. >> golden gate park could soon be moved and installed several

miles down the road along this pier in san francisco fisherman's wharf. if you do it right, you do it tastefully. >> it's going to look great. >> most of those walking around the wharf will tell you they like the idea, seeing something new in the city. >> it was always, you know, eye catching. >> i haven't seen much change around the pier in a long time, so it'd be really cool to see something new. >> the ferris wheel has been up in golden gate park for the last three years in the shadows of the academy of sciences and the deyoung museum. but a shift to the wharf would put it front and center or high and towering above the bay, with beautiful views of alcatraz. even if some may question the look like, it may make it a bit cheap, may make the area a bit cheap with it, perhaps because there's no other amusements here. >> is there much? >> yes, there's that. but philip benbough says him and his wife have done everything else. no doubt they would have done that too, if it was already in the wharf. >> and we've been on the cable car and we've been on the where

we yesterday queuing for a long although to go to alcatraz. so if there was a ferris wheel down here, you'd probably go on. i think you'd have a good business. >> you don't have to go far in fisherman's wharf to find locations like this that recently closed some officials that we talked with believe bringing a ferris wheel to this area could bring people back. >> it's a good fit. it's the right place. it kind of has that coney island feel and think folks will embrace it and it'll be an attraction that will help. fisherman's wharf during this recovery period. san francisco board of supervisors president aaron peskin says it's never really felt like the ferris wheel ever belonged in golden gate park, saying the plan to move it will soon go in front of a state agency for approval. >> they're also still in the midst of testing to make sure the ferris wheel isn't too heavy for the pier. the goal is to have the ferris wheel in the wharf in one month, just in time for the apec economic forum. j.r. stone, abc. seven news.

not clear what unfolded in the moments immediately before the gunfire. witnesses also tell us the man yelled, a reference to the chinese communist party. but investigators have not commented on a motive. >> new developments with embattled new york congressman jorge santos. he faces ten new federal charges, including wire fraud. prosecutors allege he stole the identities of some of the people who donated to his campaign. it was a chaotic scene on capitol hill today as reporters tried to question santos as he was leaving a meeting and heading to his office. >> will you step down? what is your message to your. >> i will not. i have no comment. i was in conference like everyone else without my phone, so i have nothing to talk about. i need to take a look at the whole thing. >> did you commit wire fraud, though? it's a pretty basic question. >> santos now faces a total of 23 charges. this indictment comes just days after his campaign treasurer pleaded guilty after admitting in court she took part in reporting a fraudulent half million dollar loan. new developments with two killings last month in the parking lot of the 24 hour

fitness in san leandro. police are now saying the shootings may be connected. the first one happened on september 14th. a man was found dead inside a car just before noon. ten days later, another man was found shot to death inside a car. this time just before 11 a.m. san leandro police do not have a motive, but say both victims may have been living out of their vehicles. >> this is world mental health day, so it's a good opportunity to talk about a new approach in the east bay to helping people with mental health emergencies. the san ramon police department is partnering with the fire protection district to respond to behavioral health emergency calls. if there's no immediate danger to the patient or others. firefighters will respond first with police on standby as a potential backup. this afternoon, i spoke with the san ramon police chief about this concept. chief denton carlson says sometimes a police presence isn't needed and can actually hurt more than it helps us. have you already in the short time this has been implemented, have

you already seen some results from this? we have, as a matter of fact. >> so we're just rolling out the fire. first response aspect of this project and it just started within the last week and a half. so we had our first fire, first response in san ramon just last week. and so we were able to take the law enforcement personnel out of the equation and have the medical personnel respond first. this fire first response program is the third and final phase of a new strategy by the san ramon police and fire department to more effectively help people facing a mental or behavioral health crisis. >> new at 11 a save from california highway patrol. oakland zoo tweeted this video with an update on an owl that was rescued in the middle of 580 in castro valley. the injured bird was taken to a vet hospital, then transferred to lindsay wildlife in walnut creek to be treated. look at those eyes. no wildlife officials say the owl is grumpy. i mean, you would be too, and has some bruising on its breasts and pelvis. they hope to release him

back into the wild once he is all healed up. >> but he seems pretty calm there. yeah. boy they are so fascinating. >> gorgeous. >> their eyes, like you said. all right. time to turn our attention to the weather. that's right. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel has the latest. sandhya. yeah. >> and dan and irma, we are expecting a change in our weather pattern compared to today. today we had some showers. right now i want to show you a live view as you take a look as to the roadway a little damp from earlier showers and drizzle. so take a look at the rainfall totals so far. bodega bay, 1100, santa rosa, 400 of an inch la honda, 600, half moon bay, 300 of an inch, not everybody got in on the action, but certainly has had we've had some drizzle and some showers. if you didn't get your share of the rain, here's hope. climate prediction center for next week is saying out west and across the central us the shaded and green above average rainfall is expected, which includes the bay area. there's a 33 to 60% chance of this happening. so

it is going to be a warmer day. most of you in the 60s and 70s for the early afternoon in the morning. definitely sweater weather for parts of the bay area. you will notice some cooler spots in the mid to upper 40s 50s. elsewhere with apache fog around. so if i were you i would grab that extra layer tomorrow afternoon. you'll need the shades. it's going to be a nice day. temperatures all the way up into the upper 70s inland mid 60s coast side sunday shine from coast to inland but it is going to get windy along the coastline. 8:00 in the morning, it's breezy winds ramp up 32 to 36 miles an hour near the coastline. and that gusty pattern is with us through the evening hours now looking ahead to the weekend, saturday morning, there's your opportunity for some wet weather and then again on monday in the evening. but as of right now, i wouldn't change your weekend plans because the weekend plans just includes a weak system. early saturday, accuweather 70 forecast breezy and milder tomorrow warming continues thursday with temperatures in the 80s inland increasing clouds leading to that opportunity for
