know the state of mind. >> somebody would have to be in to do that. what he did already is scary to think what could still happen. >> good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ahmad daetz. as we speak, hundreds of police officers in maine are actively involved in that search for the mass shooting suspect identified as robert cod. all right. >> let's catch you up now on the very latest we have as we come on the air. maine's governor now says 18 people are dead and some of those victims are being identified. and a youth bowling coach at the local bowling alley, members of a deaf cornhole club and loved ones are among the lives lost tonight. >> a law enforcement source tells abc news the suspect had affiliations at both the bowling alley and bar that he allegedly targeted. the source says he may have been looking for an ex-girlfriend at one of them. >> the suspect also now appears to have been fairly thoughtful about eluding police. there was a plan, they believe police recovered a cell phone. he left behind, apparently thinking it could be tracked. >> abc seven news reporter j.r

stone joins us from the newsroom with more on the search for that suspect. j.r >> alma dan, this has been an extremely busy night in maine as law enforcement personnel are actively looking for cards. so far they have been unsuccess all but hundreds of individuals are working through the night and on the ground. come outside, walk in in front of the truck with your hands up and law enforcement in bowed in maine surrounding mass shooting suspect robert cards home ordering those inside to come out as they serve one of several search warrants. officials, though, saying it is unknown if card is in this home or any others in the area that they are searching. more than 350 law enforcement personnel, including police officers, fbi agents, us marshals and atf agents, have now been searching for card for more than 24 hours on the ground and in the air. authorities tell us the 40 year old has a history of military service in the reserves cards. neighbor says

robert had just bought a high tech scope for one of his guns. >> it was a $2,000 thermal scope. he had just gotten and it's, you know, it's infrared. you can see in the dark with it. it picks up heat signatures. >> officials say cards spent two weeks in a mental health facility. this past summer after allegedly hearing voices and threatening to shoot up a national guard facility in maine. a law enforcement source tells abc news that card had affiliations with the bar and the bowling alley where shots were fired and people were killed. those sources saying an ex-girl friend of his is connected to one of the locations on thursday, megan hutchinson and her ten year old daughter, zoe spoke about the moments they hid inside a storage room at the bowling alley wednesday night when the gunman walked in. little zoe was grazed by a bullet. but is okay. when i turned around, i saw the shooter right behind me had just come in the door. >> you never thought i'd grow up

and leg. >> and it's just like. like why? like, why do people do this? >> a question that remains unanswered by law enforcement sources with knowledge of the investigation told abc news that a note found inside card's home is being described as a suicide note addressed to his son. they also say that card left behind a cell phone that authorities have since recovered will update you if we get any word on his whereabouts during this newscast. j.r. stone abc seven news. >> all right. j.r >> thank you for the latest and it is well documented the united states has far and away more mass shootings than any other country in the world. this year the us has seen 565 mass shootings with all but seven states reporting at least one, according to the gun violence archive. last year, there were 645. they count any shooting with four or more people shot. there were 688 mass shootings in 2021, which is one of the

highest counts since the data started being tracked. killings in maine are rare, with the state reporting a total of 29 last year. >> lewiston is a fairly small city and to think that this is in our own backyard is just it's just very hard to comprehend. >> maine has had just three mass shootings since 2018. what happened at lewiston has at least one lawmaker vowing for change. >> maine, i would point out, has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the country. and has a long heritage of responsible gun ownership. >> the time has now come for me to take responsibility for this failure, which is why i now call on the united states congress to ban assault rifles like the one used by the sick perpetrator of this mass killing in lewiston. >> is the second largest city in maine, with about 37,000 people

now, we want to make sure that you have the support you need to process these events and take on the issue of gun olence. we have a list of vetted resources to help. just visit abc seven news.com/take action. all right. as we continue to track what's happening, maine maine, let's move on for a moment to give you a heads up on the weather because there's something that we need to be aware of this weekend. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandy patel is looking at that. and sandy, what to expect in our 24 hour accuweather forecast. >> yes dan we are talking about fire danger going up as we hit the weekend and tomorrow morning. a chill in the air. so let's talk about that fire weather watch that goes up for the hills lake solano and mendocino counties. 5 a.m. saturday until 5 p.m. sunday. combination of 40 to 50 mile an hour wind gusts lower humidity means any fires that develop are going to rapidly spread the fire. danger is not a concern. tomorrow morning, temperatures are going to start out on the chilly side, 30 to 50 by noon time. still on the cool side with some high clouds passing

through and the afternoon highs will remain below average by evening. those temperatures are going down again saturday morning. we will start out with some patchy frost. i'll be back with a full look at the concerns with the fire danger coming up. >> dan okay, sandhya, thanks a lot. we'll touch base shortly. new developments. cruz is pausing all driverless services nationwide after the california dmv suspended its autonomous vehicle operations in a statement tonight, gener motors run cruzaid the decision is about rebuilding public trust while looking inward at its processes and systems. the announcement saying this is not related to any additional incidents. rather, it's a proactive measure for safety. it's unclear how long the pause here will last, but testing is still allowed with a driver present at the wheel. cruz has driverless operations in phenix, houston, austin, dallas and miami. >> tonight, new details are emerging about the bay area pilot accused of trying to shut down the engines of an alaska airlines flight as it was

heading to san francisco. so the pilot from pleasant hill appeared in federal court today as now his wife is reacting for the very first time. abc seven news reporter tim johns joins us here in studio with what we're learning tonight tim. >> yeah, alma. now, it's important to remember that that pilot, emerson is facing two different sets of charges, one federal and one state in oregon. those charges also carry different potential consequences if he is convicted. and emerson pleaded not guilty on thursday to federal charges of interference with flight crew members and attendance. that charge could have a penalty of up to 20 years in prison, says bay area legal expert stephen clark. >> it is possible that the federal government is using this charge as a placeholder until they do further investigation in and have their experts in aviation looking at whether mr. emerson's conduct could actually have brought down that airplane. >> according to an fbi affidavit. emerson said he was suffering from a nervous breakdown while on the plane. he also told authorities he had taken psychedelic mushrooms

around two days prior. emerson's defense attorney spoke outside court today. he would like to reiterate that he had no intention to harm himself or anybody on the airplane when he acted in addition to the federal charges, emerson also faces state charges in oregon, including 83 counts of attempted murder. >> the state authorities believe that had the pilot and other people in the cockpit not intervened, that plane would have crashed and killed everyone on board. >> clark believes that in both the state and federal cases, the mental health argument will play a key role in emerson's defense. i'm a well respected pilot. >> i had a complete mental health event and i never would have committed this crime. but for my mental health issues. >> also speaking outside the courthouse thursday, emerson's wife said while she knew her husband was struggling with depression, she was in a state of shock over his arrest. she told reporters her husband would have never knowingly tried to crash the plane. now, another thing clark noted during our conversation was how emerson's

case might impact flight regulations moving forward. clark believes the faa will look at this event and possibly reconsider whether to allow people who aren't actually flying the plane to be in the cockpit during flight in the studio, tim johns, abc seven news. >> all right, tim, thank you. the us is making progress in helping americans escape gaza. thousands have died and thousands more have been injured in the ongoing israel-hamas war. a state department spokesperson says they're working closely with the governments of israel and egypt and with the un to open the rafah border for us citizens amid the lack of food, water and fuel crisis, the us is also requesting a temporary pause in action so humanitarian assistance can get in and civilians can get out to relative safety. and new at 11, a brother and sister baking team are selling out of out of their treats for children affected by the war. >> yeah, to date, they've raised thousands of dollars and abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez has more on a very sweet idea.

>> some of the bay area's best young bakers are selling their sweet treats for a good cause on thursday at the los altos farmers market, nihal qadri and his sister poonam donated 100% of their proceeds to the palestine children's relief fund. nihal said young adults can also help innocent victims from the israel hamas war. >> just in general, raising money and just helping the community that it's also a job that us children have to do too, because it's to better, better the community, better the world. and that's not only one specific group's job. >> new customers, regular customers and family friends showed up to give their support. >> being jewish and married to an israeli, i think it's really important to be here and support them and show unity in the two communities and show that there's humanity. and we want we want innocent people to have care and support. >> the qadri's launch la jawab treats during the pandemic.

next level by empowering every member of the department, officers and staff with the tools to step forward. if something isn't right. in tonight's abc7 building a better bay area breakthrough, i went to see what an innovative new program at the walnut creek police department is all about. down a nondescript hallway at the walnut creek police department, something new and different is happening on the other side of this door. an emerging trend in law enforcement. and this force is on the cutting edge. i was there this week for one of the daylong training classes. what's the feedback you get after this training program from the officers who've gone through the course? >> what they find out is that we've already been doing a lot of this stuff. it's just we're adding structure, we're adding an organization in mindset, we're breaking down the barrier of different levels of hierarchy. it was hierarchy that may have been a factor keeping fellow officers standing just steps away from intervening in the incident involved. >> george floyd. it's a case study back in that classroom in walnut creek.

>> know your duty to intervene if unnecessary harm is being inflicted. i'm expected to do something. shamika riley is a property and evidence technician and dispatcher in the walnut creek police department, but she's also a trainer teaching her colleagues, sworn officers and staff how to step in when things get sticky. >> and someone who is above you at your same level or well below , you can feel confident that they can speak up and face no repercussions. yes why is that important? >> it's important that everyone feels that they're on the same level, that it's not broken down by rank and file. it's good from the top down, bottom up. >> for chief jaime knox. embrace icing. this program was an obvious decision. >> this takes awareness and moves it to action. no community wants to wait for tragedy to strike or for something to happen. that could be prevented. so i thought, well, let's move forward with a program like this so that we can be proactive instead of reactive. >> the walnut creek police department is one of only 22 in the entire state to implement the able program. able stands

for active bystander ship in law enforcement, active bystander ship means empowering officers and staff to step in to help a colleague under stress or crossing a line. it's not just when to intervene, but you literally are teaching them today how to intervene. what does that entail? >> yeah, so it's about using your tools or your tactics that you already have. quick decision making skills, things that officers do all the time. but putting a spin on it for okay, how do i go up to my coworker? how do i go up to my boss? >> that's been the mindset in the department. the chief and others tell me, but this formalizes it and provides the tools to make sure it happens. captain ryan hibbs oversees the project. having the ability to stay open and receive that intervention is a key component to its effectiveness. >> so we feel as though this is going to be a very effective program. we're thrilled to be a part of the ground floor, if you will, and be an early adopter. >> there's a lot of enthusiasm about it there. the able program is funded by the georgetown law center at no cost to the walnut

creek police department. other than overtime for officers who go through the training session on their day off. >> our next abc seven building a better break through, building a better bay area breakthrough takes us to west oakland, where we find a local shop that's doing much more than just regular business. >> they give new starts in the form of a fresh set of wheels. the bikes for life shop is hiring people who are formerly incarcerated to give away free bikes and do repairs. as the shop grows, so will the job opportunities they've already expanded to creating a food pantry and selling clothes. in a few weeks, they will bring in younger ages to show them how to build or repair a bike that they can take home. they have all these goals because their time stood still for a little bit and they want to make sure that when they hit the ground, they hit the ground running. >> they don't want to stand still. they don't want to be forgotten about. they want to be a part of society, you know, so no one's perfect. but an opportunity always helps. and that's what we're here to do. >> opportunities. all right. our final building, a better bay

area breakthrough is a sweet update to a story we told you about earlier this week. yeah, a special education teacher in san jose tells us that he's seeing an outpouring of support for his idea of a student halloween party. >> yeah, the teacher started the event last year specifically for special education students and teachers. >> since our story aired on monday night, people have donated thousands of dollars far exceeding this year's goal. >> yeah, the teacher tells us. another teacher from as far as san leandro is now interested in bringing her students to the dance on halloween. very cool. >> i love seeing everybody help out, right? yeah. all right. so let's get to our weather now. we're almost to the weekend. >> we are meteorologist cindy patel is here with the forecast sandy. >> yeah. and this weekend, we do have elevated fire danger coming up. dan and let's talk about that. that's the immediate concern for the upcoming weekend. gusty downsloping winds will develop. the humidity is going to drop and any fires that do develop will rapidly spread. so keep that in mind as we go hour by hour notice. those winds, they're coming out of the

north northeast. october is a time of year when we are concerned about this, 2:00 in the afternoon on saturday, they ramp up at 9 p.m. we're looking at 35 to 45 miles, almost an hour winds and going into sunday morning, still very gusty. it's a very drying wind, which is why we have that concern. humidity levels 5 a.m. saturday are still pretty high. notice those numbers coming down quickly as we head towards saturday night with that downslope wind, 18% humidity in napa, lake berryessa 19. and so when you look at the fire danger index, the yellows and oranges indicating high to very high fire danger, especially for the north and east bay hills saturday night, there will be isolated pockets of extreme fire danger indicated in red and that is going to continue into. definitely stay aware of your surroundings and have a game plan in case there is a fire near you. from our emeryville camera, we are looking at a

stunning view of san francisco increasing high clouds overnight. cold the next few mornings patchy frost is possible and that elevated fire danger this upcoming weekend, saturday night live doppler seven showing you higher clouds just kind of streaming in. this system is not going to bring us rain tomorrow. but once that system passes, high pressure builds in and that's what's going to bring us the fire danger for your morning right now. those temperatures in the 40s and the 50s, by morning, you'll feel that chill. look at the 24 hour temperature change, down 14 degrees in novato. san jose is running seven degrees colder. so we are going to be looking at temperatures in the north bay valleys in the low to mid 30s by tomorrow morning, high clouds are not going to really help much. the rest of you in the 40s and the 50s bundle up before you leave home because you will feel that chill tomorrow afternoon. hang on to that extra layer. a cooler than average upper 50s to the upper 60s. plenty of sun for the mid and late afternoon on friday. now on saturday, temperatures will bottom out. we're going to see the potential for some more frost as we noticed those numbers in the 30s and the 40s.
