a san jose police officer involved in a controversial shooting is off the job tonight and under investigation for text messages found on his phone. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. we'll have that story in just a moment. but we're going to begin with a truly horrifying murder investigate and manhunt in the north bay santa rosa. police are looking for a man wanted for decapitating a relative and fleeing with her head. they say detectives suspect he might be headed for the central valley. a

killer on the loose and a quiet neighborhood shaken tonight after santa rosa police made a gruesome discovery. >> yeah, that's pretty horrific thing to happen anywhere, especially in your own neighborhood. >> around 3:40 p.m. yesterday, police responded to a 911 call about a possible homicide inside a home. >> and when officers arrived, they did find a deceased adult female who had been decapitated. >> but what was even more troubling was what officers didn't find upon searching the residence. >> they were unable to locate the missing body part. they were able to identify a suspect and also believe that that that suspect left the residence with with his relatives head authorities are searching for this man, luis gustavo arroyo. >> lopez, a 24 year old relative of the victim who detectives say killed the woman, mutilated the body and is now on the run.

police say arroyo lopez was recently released from state prison after being incarcerated for assault and weapons charges. some members of the santa rosa community say they are nervous, while others are still trying to make sense of a brutal crime. >> it's a pretty quiet neighborhood, so i yeah, i was i'm completely shocked. >> sarah warringa lives in the neighborhood. she says she never saw anything suspicious at the victim's house. >> i've never heard any yelling. i've never seen any violence. yeah it's. i just thought it was just a kind of a normal family household and a warrant is out tonight for his arrest. >> if you have any information that can help this investigation , please contact the santa rosa police department. a former san jose police officer is accused of sending racist text messages, including one that said, quote, i hate black people. that officer mark mcnamara resigned earlier this week after an internal investigation. abc7 news reporter tim johns is in the newsroom with the latest on

the developing story from police and also tim from city leaders. >> yeah, dan, that's right. now as our viewers at home might know, this isn't the first scandal that has hit the san jose police department in recent years. back in 2024, officers were at the center of controversy after racist facebook posts emerged and as for mark mcnamara, the san jose police chief said he was already being investigated. for another unrelated criminal matter. when these text messages were discovered. quick backlash from san jose city officials after racist text messages emerged involving one of their now former officers. in a statement friday, san jose police chief anthony mata said his department's internal affairs unit was investigating mark mcnamara for another incident when they discovered the messages. >> this is why we have a zero tolerance policy. >> san jose mayor matt mehan says he was disgusted by around two dozen text messages attributed to mcnamara. the text seemingly referenced a 2022 incident in which the then officer mcnamee shot football player keon green at san jose's la victoria taqueria. video

showed green had appeared to have broken up a fight inside the restaurant and was backing out of a door holding a gun. he had confiscated from one of the perpetrators in some of the texts, mcnamara saying things like, quote, i'm pretty sure the district attorney would have charged me if i used excessive force. but she didn't because i didn't use excessive force. i'll shoot you too, in others. mcnamara describing african american men and writing, quote, they should all be bowing to me and bringing me gifts. otherwise he would have lived a life of poverty and crime in another text message, mcnamara writing that he hated black people. it's how long does the canary have to keep telling you there's something wrong inside this function in reverend jethro more. the second is the president of the naacp of san jose and silicon valley. he says while he applauds the police department for acting quickly, the incident is another blow to the relationship between sjp and the african american community. >> it's an ongoing problem in police departments across america and san jose police

department is indicative of that . >> mayor mehan says the city has been working hard to have mechanisms in place to identify, buy and weed out problematic officers like mcnamara. >> the way that we build trust and rebuild the trust that, frankly, this individual has cost our city is by being completely transparent and taking the swiftest possible action we can. >> despite that, though, mehan says he recognizes more work still needs to be done. >> we are not going to tolerate racism. um, we are going to continue working hard every day to build a culture of the utmost respect and professionalism within our department. now, greens lawyer has not publicly commented on these allegations. >> and remember, this isn't the first racist text message scandal to emerge here in the bay area. there were also similar instances in antioch, san francisco and at the santa clara county sheriff's office as well. in the newsroom, tom johns , abc seven news. >> and each one very painful for a lot of people. tim, obviously, thank you very much. apec, the

asia pacific economic cooperation summit will bring leaders from 21 member economies to san francisco. this massive international event means major security restrictions and traffic closures. those closures are set for the week of november 13th and will affect traffic on i-80, including lanes on the bay bridge and the off ramps at fourth and fifth streets. here's abc seven news reporter tara campbell with what to expect. >> i'm anticipating a disaster. i'm anticipating to have to add 30 more minutes to my commute every morning. >> bay area commuters are bracing for apek the global economic summit, drawing up to 30,000 people to san francisco and more than 20 world leaders, meaning securing t will be high and traffic closures are abundant. >> it's going to make bar a complete mess, especially trying to get directly into the city from west oakland bar. it's just going to be a mess. >> i did hear that there are going to be blocking lanes during apec and so yeah, i'm anticipate eating a little bit

more traffic than than normal. >> the hub of road restrictions will be around the moscone center between market and harrison street and second and fifth streets, chp and caltrans also announcing plans to close freeway ramps and lanes during the summit, most notably the far left lane on eastbound 80 on the bay bridge as well as the far right lane on westbound 80 on the bay bridge. >> that's going to be a four day closure if you don't want to risk being stuck in a car, get on bart, get on ac transit, get on. >> golden gate transit supervisor aaron peskin urging people to use public transit. there's going to be a couple of routes that are going to be rerouted a little bit to go around the exclusion area south of market, but the subway is going to be running the cable cars are going to be running on a shorter route. >> you can also expect to see a lot of law enforcement on the streets. >> s be plenty of police officers and folks directing

explains. new research shows that young women who've never smoked are increasingly at risk. >> young women are overtaking young men, but that is not something to brag about when we're talking about lung cancer. lung cancer is the second most prevalent cancer in women in the united states. >> it's also the second most prevalent cancer in men in the united states. but both in the united states and worldwide, it's actually the leading cause of cancer related death. >> sobering statistics. ucsf doctor johannes kratz is a thoracic surgeon. he removes lung cancer. he talked to me between surgeries to explain recently released new research by the american cancer society. we know smoking rates in the us have declined over the past several decades, and with it, lung cancer rates have dropped as well. but here's where things

get interesting. >> we're uncovering more and more cases of people who have never smoked, who have lung cancer, and they're increasingly younger. they're increasingly female. and so now i think it's starting to enter the public consciousness as the sort of health crisis that it really is. >> we're talking about women from around age 30 to 55. >> it is surprising because it goes contrary to our normal perception of who gets lung cancer. >> but then the question is why? >> that's a great question. and we don't quite understand that, unfortunately. but there are some clues in addition to environmental factors, dr. kratz points to lung cancer rates in asia, particularly in never smoking asian female patients. >> he says there appears to be something in the genetic background that causes them to get a specific type of lung cancer. that's pretty scary. so what can we do? is it early testing? how how do you know if you should even get tested? >> you can always ask your provider if you have a significant risk factor like family history of lung cancer

screening, whether they would consider ordering a screening ct scan for you. you know that is the best we can do right now with the absence of sort of universal guidelines of who should be getting lung cancer screening. cts >> so talk to your doctor, have a conversation, bring it up, talk to your doctor. >> have a conversation. exactly. it doesn't just kill smokers anymore. >> ama daetz reporting. dr. kratz points out the best way to help combat the number one cancer killer in the us and worldwide is to be an advocate for lung cancer research in the south bay. tonight, an elementary school held a dia de los muertos, dia de los muertos celebration for the community. fuerza community prep set up an altar for friends and students and they came out for several performances. >> all the families coming together and celebrate and here in force that we have a different families from different countries. so every country we celebrate and especially the big celebration dia de los muertos, we all getting together to celebrate

the special day for our families . their passed away and of course with the altar for our friends. >> there were aztec and mariachi dancers, plus traditional foods like tamales and pozole. some city council members came out to support as well. this is the ten year anniversary of this celebration, and it was a huge success today. tonight, the late rapper tupac shakur has a street named after him in oakland. it's a section of macarthur between grand and van buren avenues, a short walk from where tupac lived, actually well-known hip hop artists attended the unveiling ceremony this morning, including mc hammer, tupac was born in new york but launched his career in the bay area. his music focused on social inequality, injustice and love. the rock and roll hall of fame is giving hip hop, hip hop, funk, r&b and rock all reason to cheer tonight. a diverse group, very much so of artists, was inducted into the rock and roll

hall of fame. the ceremony also streaming on disney+ tonight. entertainment reporter sandy kenyon has the highlights away from here from the opening minutes, the special nature of the show was obvious. >> you get a combination of not only your favorite artists who are in the hall of fame, but the young artists that look up to them like tonight you'll have olivia, rodrigo singing with sheryl crow. >> sheryl crow brought along her two sons. it's kind of made mom cool. >> when my 13 year old was like, is this like the baseball hall of fame? and i was like, yeah, yeah. he kind of went like, i was cool. >> this also makes sheryl crow happy in part because of how many of the respect rockers getting inducted this year are women. >> yeah, i'm hoping that in the next few years we're going to see some catch up. are you strong enough to be my man? >> crow got in after her first nomination. others, like chaka

they've been dealing with the drought. they've been talking about several inches of rain by early next week. now, the tail end of this system is going to bring parts of northern california for rain, but for us, we're going to get the back end of it. so we're not going to get a whole lot out of it. i'll show you in just a moment what you can expect it. a few clouds and showers moving through parts of eureka as we look at the current temperatures there in the 50s and 60s, still pretty mild to warm out there. today's high temperatures, by the way, in the low 70s to low 80s about ten degrees above average for this gorgeous or what san jose camera right now looking at the shark tank cooler this weekend a chance of a few showers tomorrow night really late in the north bay. we're looking at scattered light showers sunday and daylight saving time ends so fall back sunday morning. just want to show you a quick look at the walk to end alzheimer's. the forecast for san francisco as people take to the streets. it's really going to be nice looking weather, comfortable numbers in the low 60s at 1030 in the morning when the walk begins,

peeks of sun temperatures in the low to mid 60s, reggie will be there emceeing the event morning temperatures in the 50s certainly cloud cover will be pretty heavy out there with some drizzle as well. temperatures tomorrow afternoon mid 60s to the upper 70s. so a cooler day. more clouds for your saturday. and as i show you the computer animation, the latest computer animations really backing off on the amount of rain. so 9 p.m. tomorrow night, it's in the north bay you will notice just spotty showers sunday morning continuing into 8 a.m. the other two computer models that i looked at are actually far wetter for sunday. but rainfall amounts overall still light for all three of the models. so here's what we're going with a few hundredths of an inch to about a 10th of an inch in santa rosa. some areas will not measure ukiah getting more than that. as you look at the accuweather seven day forecast, it's not only a cooler weekend, but we'll see a few spotty showers sunday will put it at a one and monday a one chance continuing with the lingering possibility on tuesday. once

[music] on today's show, a one of a kind art festival, dia de los muertos celebration, new beginnings for sf jazz, from vines to philanthropy. but first, a world-famous labyrinth hay maze. man: we are having so much fun. woman: yes. it's got a lot of different stuff. so if you have kiddos, it's a good place for them. if you don't have kiddos and you're on a work trip, it's good for them, too. we like to come out here every year. we're gonna get a few pumpkins. luca will pick them out, so-- [chuckles]

[luca roaring] chris: we are at the arata pumpkin farm, which was established back in 1932 in wonderful half moon bay, california. we're so proud just to be here and to be able to make thousands happy. the smiles are contagious here. [music] the first pumpkins were sold here back in the '30s. it's a historical old farm. we try real hard to keep it at a top, top level by offering so many different attractions along with pumpkins. people come here and they get to see how agriculture and how pumpkins and corn and other crops that we have grow. [music] we must have over 20,000 pumpkins here. the pumpkin river. it's about 20ft wide. as it snakes through the corn, the colors of the orange

and the white that we put in-- and the red, it's awesome. see, always these walls got to be made perfect and straight on. and where we go? i don't quite know. [laughing] but we will find out. we start building the maze usually around april. four to six people, including myself and my son, daily, five days a week to put it together. we say that it's almost an acre and a half to two acres. first we start with the big rooms like the armory spirals, moving walls, moving doors. and then we intertwine and place everything together with keeping in mind that one end has to be continuous towards the exit. we do not follow blueprints. every year is a different design. people come every year to go ahead and challenge themselves. - [girl groaning] - [laughing] that was a dead end. now you see people's reaction when they see a dead end. yeah, we're definitely getting lost.

yeah, this maze is great. it's very complicated. yeah, it's very complicated. man: i was surprised it was this big. i was expecting us to just walk through in like, ten minutes and be done. made it out, yeah. twice. man: it took us about 30 minutes the first time. keep trying. - yeah. you'll get through it eventually. [music] chris: and then i said, okay. how would the labyrinth look? the ancient greek labyrinth to a child? what did i envision when i was a kid and i came up with different patterns, and so many kids relate to it because they learn at school about greek mythology, and then once they come here, they can really almost envision it. [music] we do have a live minotaur that goes in the maze on the weekends, but it's a good minotaur, nice minotaur. anybody under the age of ten, he gives them little golden pumpkins. [music]
