ring now busted. an undercover operation running brothels out of local hotel rooms. 18 victims rescued and the investigation is finally being made public. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz abc7 news south bay reporter lauren martinez is following the investigation. but more importantly, see what's being done to protect the victims in these types of cases going forward.

>> santa clara county prosecutor say they dismantled an unprecedent human trafficking ring in the state. prosecutors say a colombian based sex trafficking ring operated out of hotels from san leandro to gilroy. >> they had the women stay at these locations as they had them remain in their room where they were under constant surveillance. >> the investigator began in 20 2218 prostitution victims were identified and nine were arrested. it was the first time wiretaps were used on a human trafficking investigator in the county. >> we have recordings of what happened to them that we will introduce in the future and be able to show in dependent corroboration for the trauma that they that they sustained over the last many months and years. >> outside the courtroom, one of the suspects girlfriends, paola rodriguez, said she's in shock. >> ensign rodriguez said if he did anything, it wasn't with bad intentions. >> the da says the 18 victims

are from latin american and southern american countries. one was a minor immigrant communities are so much more vulnerable, especially if they don't have legal status. this community solutions is just one of three nonprofit organizations in the south bay that make sure human trafficker victims can access confidence and free support due to safety reasons they could not disclose whether their organization was helping the 18 victims in this particular case. >> certainly a lot of the survivors are not going to trust us, even though we explain that we're not part of law enforcement or we're a community based organization, that their conversations with us are confidential, flores says. >> every survivor is assigned an advocate, and that person will link them to support resources for 3 to 5 years. and we want to ensure that when we support someone that we don't just address that crisis and then leave them vulnerable again, that we're really addressing all the different vulnerabilities that led to that person being exploited.

>> it the da's office says they're still looking for six more suspects. >> the. nine arrested suspects is in two weeks from now. live in san jose, lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> all right, lauren, thank you. parents of children with special needs who were lost by an east bay school went to the district's board of education meeting tonight asking for change. abc seven news recently covered the story of a five year old who left del rey elementary school without staff. realizing a driver found him in traffic. a third of a mile from the school. after the report ran, another parent came forward saying the school lost her daughter with special needs. last school year. she was later found in a classroom. tonight, the five year old boy's mom told the board she was disappointed no one called her. i i am appalled by the district's lack of concern for my son. >> i call i left messages that same day for you, dr. camp, for kim noble. i left messages. voicemails on with your assistance, dr. camp. nobody

to do about it. >> permanent ping pong tables, cornhole setups, tech ball, foosball and some chess tables. but that's just the small stuff. san francisco's un plaza skate park officials opens wednesday in an event called reopening un plaza, bringing some more energy to the neighborhood, which i felt like it was been missing maybe past years. >> i think all the skateboarders and bmxers and extreme sports people were looking for something like this. >> andrew torralva is a professional skateboarder in the bay. he was one of dozens of skaters in the area that we saw tuesday afternoon. the one with this massive alley lots has been made about un plaza being an open air drug market in the past , when city officials held a special outdoor hearing on the issue last spring, people shouted as mayor london breed spoke. someone was taken down by police after throwing a brick towards officials deals with skateboarding. >> it's going to bring less sketchy activities around a

workout area was also installed at un plaza and xavier hagwood was busy grinding into shape when we spoke with him. >> so hopefully we can have some oversight people here to kind of usher people in and out to make sure, you know, we don't have anybody destroying the property, but not everyone is happy about these renovations here at un plaza. those with the farmers market were relocated here across the street and they're not happy about it. >> i think the fact that it can't accommodate the farmer's market is real detrimental to the tenderloin neighborhood and the south of market neighborhood that really depend on that market. >> john mccormick shops at the farmers market and says there has been a huge drop in the number of people attending. mccormick also believes that this just pushes the homeless and drug dealers elsewhere. our tuesday night homeless individuals were lined up not in un plaza but along a wall outside the nearby asian art museum. un plaza, though certainly picture desk on

tuesday night, j.r. stone, abc seven news work is also being done to enliven chinatown in the city. >> and this conveniently comes just before apec crews just finished painting these clouds on stockton street pieces there at the intersection of washington and stockton right next to the central subway station. and take a look at this. the scaffolding wrap around the ferry building's clock tower is finally off, just in time for apec. you're looking live at it along the embarcadero from our abc7 roof camera a few blocks away. the clock tower has been wrapped up since february, getting a new paint job. the design team says the full restoration is expected by the end of the year, with apec coming to town, starting this weekend. >> countless global leaders, heads of state and ambassadors will all be in one place at one time. but we wanted to find out what that all means for you tonight. police chief bill scott and his deputy, david lazard outlined the department's plans to about 100 people at a virtual public safety meeting starting

headlines making up tonight's abc seven news to know oakland police are investigating after an off duty officer was shot and killed. a man not far from city hall. opd says one of its sergeants was on his way to work early this morning when the department says an armed man approached the sergeants vehicle. police say the man died at the scene from a single gunshot wound. what led up to that is now under investigation. the sergeant has been placed on paid leave. >> it's the big question. san francisco is trying to solve. getting holiday shoppers back to the once thriving union square while standing in front of the macy's holiday tree city leaders vowed to make it the safest place in urban america amid a wave of store closures and retail theft. the city says you'll notice more police and there will also be more plain clothes officers in stores. >> dreamforce will return to san francisco next year. there was a bit of uncertainty after salesforce ceo marc benioff threatened to pull the conference out of the city depending on how this year went. it turns out things went just

fine. the dreamforce will be held in september of 2024. jewish members of california state legislature are demanding immediate action from the heads of the uc and csu systems, saying anti-semitism is sweeping campuses. >> the legislators cite reports of attacks at uc berkeley, uc davis and san jose state against people expressing support for israel. the council on american-islamic relations also notes a rise in islamophobic and anti-arab hate incidents across the country. >> the supreme court seems likely to uphold the federal law that prohibits people under domestic violence restraining orders from having guns. we'll have to wait and see after the high courts hearing today, a final ruling isn't expected until early next summer. that's the news to know. >> here's another big headline. a rally inside oakland city hall to keep the a's in the town. die hard fans and the mayor perhaps with one final chance here that fight to keep the team in oakland will be coming up just a

this is going to be the best chance for many parts of the bay area. it will be a lot more cloud cover. so that's why we haven't put a storm impact scale on it just yet. next week, oh, this is looking interesting. both computer models that we typically look at painting a wet picture for tuesday, sierra looking at snow. i mean, this pattern continues through thursday as at least two storms come through stronger than what we have experienced in the past couple of months. so just keep that in mind. rainfall estimates right now, these are early estimates, half an inch in places, a little over half an inch in places like palm springs, san francisco, over an inch and a third by thursday of next week. the accuweather seven day forecast, it's a chilly morning, sunny day, even colder thursday morning. and then we're looking at that possibility of a few showers early friday weekend is dry and warmer slight chance monday and then tuesday we bring in a level one storm rain and wind is looking likely. ama and dan, we'll be right back after the break.
