has since condemned last week's hit and run incident. tonight, abc seven news reporter tim johns has the new developments in the case. >> after days of investigating the santa clara county sheriff's office says they're looking for this unidentified man. >> the suspect is believed to have committed a hate crime after deputies say he intended finally ran over a stanford student named abdul wahab amirah in a crosswalk on campus last friday. >> a great person to be around, always smiling, always happy. just overall, a really nice guy. >> this fellow student who asked to remain anonymous has been protesting the israel-hamas war on the university's campus for about three weeks. he says he knows amirah personally and wants to go visit him in the hospital after the incident. >> he's recovering. he's in good spirits. i went and saw him in the hospital. he was in a lot of pain physically. authorities say amirah believes he was intentionally targeted because of a shirt he was wearing, which had arabic writing on it. >> the sheriff's office says the suspect also shouted racially motivated things at amirah before hitting him.

>> he said he recognized that person as someone who had antagonized him and antagonized others during protests. here at stanford for the palestinian cause. >> the students who are out here say they're not just worried about their classmate who was hit, they also tell me they have concerns that this could happen again. and to somebody else, those fears could be well founded. >> we're tracking an over 200% increase in complaints that we have received in the last 30 days, as compared to years past the bay area chapter of the council on american islamic relations says islamophobic incidents over the past month rivaled the numbers last seen in the aftermath of nine divided by 11. >> they tell abc7 news they think it's only the surface. >> not everybody reports every incident. some people report to different organizations as other people don't report out of fear of further intimidation and targeting. >> and given that the israel hamas war shows no signs of stopping anytime soon, kerr says they worry things could get even worse minute by minute. >> it has been heart wrenching. everyone i know is crying at

different points in the day in palo alto. >> tim johns, abc seven news. >> there was another protest today, this one at the offices of south bay, congressman ro khanna. organizers shared this video of the event with us. people urged khanna to support a house resolution that would call for a ceasefire in the conflict zone. khanna addressed the protests during an interview tonight on cnn. >> i've never seen this kind of mobilization since the iraq war. i mean, this is there are people out on the street and they're upset with what they're seeing on television. they're upset with what they saw with the israel allies who were killed. they're upset with the hostage marches and they're upset with the palestinian children who are being killed. it's an emotional issue. >> khanna said he spoke with protesters at his santa clara office, expressing his desire to see civilians protected. but he also said hamas has to be held accountable. developing news tonight, the fbi is investigating a series of suspicious envelopes sent to election facilities in at least five states include dying hours.

>> in california, some of the envelopes contain fentanyl, which as we know, can be deadly inside were letters, one of them calling to, quote, end elections. now letters showed up in los angeles, sacramento, oregon, nevada, georgia and washington state as well. >> as i sat down for my own batch to open up the fire alarm went off immediately. we knew that something was going on. >> no one has been hurt so far. in georgia, workers are being equipped with narcan. as a precaution. the letters have delayed the tallying of votes in some states. >> the flag is up at city hall and the security barriers are in place as aipac is ready to roll into town. san francisco is transforming its look ahead of the economic trade summit. tens of thousands of people, including presidents, ambassadors and ceos, are all seeing the city up close with san francisco's international image. >> very much on the line. aipac is the city's biggest gathering of world leaders since 1945, when the united nations was

formed here. and tonight, less than a week out, the governor and mayor are hyping up a huge plan to beautify the city. >> abc7 news reporter j.r stone is following the story from the newsroom tonight with the details j.r. dan and ama. >> this may have been as transport as i have seen. governor newsom, he spoke about the frustrations among californians when it comes to dirty streets in california. at one point going so far as to say i had to look in the mirror and realize this happened on my watch. now an effort to clean and beautify we're cleaning up this state. california governor gavin newsom is touting what is known as the clean california program at the unveiling of this street tree nursery in san francisco. >> i know folks say, oh, they're just cleaning up this place because all those fancy leaders are coming into town. that's true. because it's true. but it's also true that for months and months and months prior to

aipac, we've been having different conversations, conversations is about ways to clean up and beautify cities in california like san francisco. >> newsom says this is now a $1.2 billion clean. california program. part of that has gone to caltrans, clearing 3275 encampments across the state since 2021. other funds will go to buying, growing and planting these trees in urban areas of san francisco. >> it's the most significant commitment that we know of any state in the nation, even on a per capita basis, to begin the process of at least turning things around. >> public works crews tell me that in six months, these trees will be planted in neighborhoods, including the tenderloin, soma and bayview. newsom says red tape having to do with the liability of city officials operating locations like this on state property is part of what had previously pushed this clean initiative project, and many others back the governor addressing numerous

questions about the timing of the project before aipac. >> obviously, any time you put on an event, by definition, you know you have people over your house, you're going to clean up the house, you're going to make sure the kids make their beds. i was just with president xi, the first thing he talked about was san francisco. the first thing he remembered was the golden gate bridge when he was here in 1985. you should have seen the smile on his face. i mean, this this is you. this place is beloved. and. yes. and its best days are in front of it, not behind it. >> certainly exciting stuff here. the trees, though, don't get planted until they're around six feet tall. so we have some time before we see many of these trees on san francisco streets. now, could this announcement have happened after apec? sure. but it appears newsom and mayor breed are trying to get the word out and make it clear that they are working at this. newsom even started talking encampment removal challenges and judges decisions at one point. but that is a whole nother story in

low 60s to low 70s and later in the evening breezy and cooler. we do have a big pattern change ahead which includes a stretch of wet weather. i'll let you know how this is going to impact apec. take a look at that forecast plus your weekend coming right up. dan? all right, sandhya, thanks very much. >> all right. happening tomorrow, say hello to the start of the ski season. mount rose is kicking things off as the first resort to open in lake tahoe this winter. they shared some incredible drone footage with us . look at all of the snow. a mount rose's team says a recent storm helped get things ready for skiers and snowboard as a donner ski ranch will also open this weekend. on saturday, followed by several more resorts next weekend. >> well, if you can believe this, thanksgiving is now only two weeks away. and that season of giving could really help our local food banks. right now, at least one major provider tells us right now is much more challenging than the pandemic. tonight, abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez

explains how they are now mobilizing for the increased holiday need. >> 60 boxes are packed in six minutes by staff and volunteers at second harvest of silicon valley. each box contains 25 pounds of fresh produce. it's a busy time at the food bank. with thanksgiving just two weeks away, we are providing frozen turkeys to many of our meal provider partner and we are also getting whole chickens. currently, 1 in 6 people in silicon valley are turning to second harvest for help. >> so currently the need is at a peak level. it's the same. we saw during the peak height of the pandemic. >> second harvest is very much a hub for food banks in san mateo and santa clara counties. on average, they're helping to feed 500,000 people a month. the pandemic supports went away in march of this year, and since then we have seen like an increased level of need since

need has outpaced financial donations. they're now trying to rally the community to donate their time or money. >> it has like immediate impact. you know that when you donate to second harvest, our neighbors are getting help. immediate, like tangible help. >> on thursday morning, volunteers packed 30,000 pounds of food in the afternoon it was 23,000. >> so that'll be about 960 families that are going to be affected 3840 people for many people during this holiday season, getting groceries is not as simple as making a list and going to the store. >> so this is a time we all want to enjoy those traditions and we want all our neighbors to have that feeling of family and hope and comfort during that time in the south bay. >> we can't thank you enough. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> a lot more to bring you a public transit bus smashed straight into a restaurant in southern california. the very latest on what we know. >> picking a fight with the hells angels. the reason a local

this bus collided with a car and then a building earlier today. the bus and the car ended up smashed inside the bougie crab restaurant, which also has a private residence above it. now, two of the bus riders had to be removed from the wreckage and ten people were transported to the hospital. six of them in serious condition. witnesses say the accident happened when a gray car cut off the bus. however, officials have not released a cause of the accident. >> back here at home, fairfield's police chief is threatening to quit if his officers are forced to escort members of the hells angels in a toy drive. every year, riders get a police escort for the samoa mission. christmas toy run . the past couple of years, members of the hells angels have taken part. but the chief says

city of san francisco officially kicked off the holiday season. mayor london breed as well as other city officials, were on hand to partake in the illuminating festivities. spectators of all ages were delighted by the trees, dazzling display of lights, ornaments and holiday flair. it's like a sparkle. >> it is spectacular. it's nice to get that up before everyone arrives for apec too, though. before the race. oh rain is coming. several days, perhaps. >> yeah. let's get to meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya. >> yeah, and that's happening next week. so dan and amy, that is just a beautiful sight. we do have some dry weather for the weekend and for apec, at least the start. let me show you a live picture right now from our mount tam cam. it is dry outside as we look at a stunning view of san francisco playing host to the apec summit. and here's a look at the forecast tomorrow. a mix of sun and clouds, 66 degrees, filtered sunshine for your saturday. it is going to be nice on sunday. a little bit warmer. upper 60s all changes

next week, monday, mostly cloudy and cooler. we're going to go with rainy breezy tuesday. hey, look at this mid 60s to the low 60s. wednesday and thursday. we are looking at that wet weather with some gusty conditions as well. since we're on the topic of wet weather, let's talk about el nino and advisory was issued today. warmer than average sea surface temperatures continuing near the equatorial pacific. here's a look at what they're saying now. 62% chance el nino continues through spring, greater than 55% chance of a strong event, which is january through march most of our winter months. and 35% chance of it being a historically strong event. but it is important to remember just because it is a strong event doesn't mean strong impacts locally necessarily. so stay tuned. we do know that there's a weak cold front coming into northern california. it is going to continue to bring us some clouds, but there is enough of a break in the cloud cover right now that the temperatures have been falling. a couple of drops up to the north could be

coming down into the north bay overnight. temperatures right now in the 40s and the 50s. here's a live view from our pier 39 camera looking at a nice view of san francisco. mostly cloudy overnight, possible sprinkles in the north, mainly sunny and warmer this weekend. and that rainy pattern sets up next week. so let's go hour by hour tomorrow morning at 3:00. you may see a couple of showers up in the northern part of our viewing area. the clouds will pass through once that front goes clearing begins for the late afternoon and early evening hours. your morning temperatures because we're seeing enough of a break in the cloud cover. we are going to see some chilly spots, but not quite as cold as it was this morning. we had low to mid 30s this morning. tomorrow morning, we're going to go upper 30s to the upper 40s with mostly cloudy skies. tomorrow afternoon, low 60s to low 70s, just a mix of sun and clouds. a nice looking day for your friday and then here comes the setup for the wet pattern. monday evening the storm begins to park itself just off the coastline. watch what happens as we head
