happen in our country. shutting down right blocks of san francisco really making it hard for the people who actually live and work here. and we want it apec to be something very, very special for each and every one of you. >> tonight, it's the arrival of aipac, and not everyone is excited as 20 to 30,000 people descend upon san francisco for this landmark trade event with world leaders. thousands more pushed back by marching through the streets. good evening. i'm j-r stone. just as aipac gets underway, it was not quite a red carpet rollout for the 21 asia pacific member economies, as more than 3000 people showed their opposition to the event. marching through downtown san francisco today. speakers from various groups voiced their concerns, ranging from fossil fuel use among the apec member economies to lgbtq plus and human rights, as well as the israel hamas war. >> so our main thing is we actually just want to shut it down. we want to make sure that

the economies, the things that people want are actually voiced by the people themselves and not just these big heads of state that are coming. >> other activists we spoke to said they plan to protest throughout the entirety of the apec summit during this demonstration, anti-israel graffiti was spray painted on the san francisco chronicle headquarters and a mission across from the sf mint. you're seeing that message here. other messages were spray painted along portions of portions of today's rally, like these tags in front of the wells fargo building downtown on market and drum. as for the apec summit itself, world leaders were still going from event to event tonight, all as the rest of the city wonders how their daily routines and work commutes are going to be affected. abc7 news reporter suzanne fawn joins us live in the newsroom as we are finally getting to see how these months of planning are turning

out. suzanne >> so j.r, some people we talked to are very much aware of the strict security and many detours expected this week for the apec summit. others had no idea about roadblocks. now, san francisco welcomes world leaders, dignitaries and business leaders this week in the most significant global gathering here since the founding of the united nations in 1945. it starts and not just the long awaited apec summit, but the traffic troubles. it potentially is going to be a nightmare. >> it already seems like it's going to be pretty packed, so i'm just going to try to avoid most of these streets as long as possible around moscone center. >> it's slow and go. plenty of signs warn commuters of street closures in that area from tuesday until sunday. moscone center will be ground zero for the apec summit, with nearly two dozen heads of state and thousands of delegates and hundreds of foreign media at apec. you can bet that security here is top notch and that means lots of detours and delays for commuters. >> it's kind of annoying trying

to commute in and out of here. >> there are plenty of security gates up and large law enforcement presence now in the apec security zones. and there are frequent escorts heading to and from areas on this sunday night at city hall, mayor london breed offered a warm welcome to the apec business advisory council. >> i have been waiting for this moment for so long. i don't know about you, but i am excited for what this means for not only san francisco, but what it means for the world. >> and after that, she headed to the california academy of science. that's where us treasury secretary janet yellen hosted the finance ministers gala. secretary yellen talked about the importance of apec, quote from promoting inclusive and sustainable growth to supporting responsible innovation across our economies. and this is all to advance a shared vision of an open, dynamic, resilient and peaceful asia-pacific region. rodney fang, the ceo of san francisco chamber of commerce, says apec is a big win for the city of san

closures. they include the area around the moscone center where several conferences are scheduled. muni is no longer serving stops in that red exclusion zone. there are road closures in nob hill where many top level guests are staying. the embarcadero near the exploratorium is also affected. that's where president joe biden is hosting a party on wednesday. and the legion of honor is the site of a high level leader dinner on thursday. also, pay attention to the signs if you're driving in the city. temporary signs are up in places that are no parking zones and muni has launched a program that will give you a courtesy alert text if your vehicle is about to get towed and you can sign up for the text before tow service online. just search for mta text tow. you can trust abc seven news with everything apec this week from updating traffic closures to areas to avoid, we've put together a day by day guide with all there is to know

on apec. it's up on the front page of abc7 news.com or or your abc7 bay area app. now let's get a quick peek of what we can expect for our weather to start the week as we gear up for rain coming later on this week. abc7 weather anchor spencer christian is here with our monday plan with your accuweather forecast. >> okay. gr that rain is getting closer by the hour. let me give you a look at the first weekday of apec here in san francisco. the day will start with cloudy skies. 70 uh- 7:00 in the morning. temperatures ranging from upper 40s at the coast to low 50s around the bay. by midday 12 noon, we'll see brighter skies with still lots of clouds. it'll be 62 to 64 degrees from the bay to inland, 4:00 in the afternoon, a little bit sunnier, but still lingering clouds, mid 60s around the bay and inland. and then at 7 p.m. to hours and one minute after sunset, it'll start getting cool again and cloudier. the night before the arrival of the first rain, about which i will have more detail in just a few

minutes. j.r. >> spencer, thank you so much. let's get to some developing news down in socal where tonight there's still no estimated time on when a fire damaged freeway in la will be reopening. and you can imagine how it will affect that rush hour commute all lanes of the ten freeway in downtown los angeles have been closed since early yesterday morning. governor newsom even issued a state of emergency to help repair the main freeway as quickly as possible. caltrans says they are still assessing the damage and it means tomorrow morning could be an all out mess for drivers as 300 plus thousand vehicles go through this corridor every single day. >> it's of significant consequence s to the economy to the health and safety of angelenos. impact to our schools, to vulnerable communities. all of that we take very seriously.

>> the fire started at a storage yard under the freeway, eight acres burned. the exact cause has not yet been determine. ed that gets us to tonight's abc7 advancer at 11. it's just our way of getting you ready and aware of the headlines. you'll be seeing much more of in the week to come. our first is the lead up to a massive march on washington, d.c. on tuesday. more than 250,000 people are expected to march for israel, all calling for the safe return of hostages and an end to anti-semitism to sundays ago, the bay area jewish community rallied in san francisco to condemn the hamas terror attacks. but now jewish leaders in the bay area tell us close to 100 local representatives will make the trip to d.c. for tuesday's march. part of our conversation with a member of the palo alto jewish community center is coming up in the next half hour of abc7 news at 11. our next abc7 advancer at 11 is

the looming deadline to avoid another federal government shutdown. congress has until friday to pass a last minute spending plan and as we take a live look from the capitol tonight, a two part plan is currently facing an uphill battle. reporter jen sullivan has more on what it will take to avoid a government shutdown. >> time is running out for congress to pass a funding bill and avoid a government shutdown. >> nobody wants a government shutdown. >> lawmakers have until midnight friday before many government operations will be forced to halt. a plan must first pass the house and then the senate. but newly elected house speaker mike johnson hasn't even set a date for a possible vote on a spending deal in the house. >> i'm not exactly sure how he's going to play this, but he's not off to a great start on saturday , speaker johnson announced a plan on a gop conference. >> call it split into two parts. the first bill would extend funding until january 19th and would include money for military

veterans affairs, transport and housing and the energy department. but the second part of the bill would extend funding until february 2nd and include money for the rest of the government. but it lacks deep spending cuts. many right wing house members pushed for. >> we've got $1.7 trillion deficit this year and where under any circumstances can they come to bring themselves to have an offset? >> neither bill, though, includes additional aid for israel or ukraine, something many lawmakers want to see. >> i want to see that get done as expeditiously as possible. i also support aid to ukraine if the government shuts down millions of federal employees won't get paid and the impact across the country could be significant. >> not all services will be continue to be provided. so all of those could have a bad ripple effect. >> i'm jenn sullivan reporting. >> and our final abc7 advancer at 11 is the big vote. this week on those oakland a's. the owners of major league baseball will

gather in texas on tuesday for the winter owners meetings. part of the agenda is voting on the a's pending move to las vegas and that vote is expected to pass. 75% of the owners or 23 of them, need to vote yes. it would be a huge step in owner john fisher's attempt to push the a's to vegas after more than five decades in oakland, however, there are still many local and state agreements. the a's would need to finalize before any move is made. the a's will be kicked out of the coliseum in 2024 unless they commit to staying in oakland. still ahead on abc seven news at 11, a mystery is unfolding in los angeles. a woman's body parts found in a dumpster and the suspect is the son of an ex hollywood executive. we have the latest in that case. also, the search for whoever did this. police in san francisco find a smashed up atm and all smiles for the niners as they roll in jacksonville. chris

of hollywood executive sam haskell has been arrested for murder. police were called when plastic bags containing his wife's remains were found inside a dumpster. the victim's parents are also missing. police say there is a link between the discovered remains and haskell's tarzana home. haskell is the son of emmy winning executive sam haskell, who served as an agent for celebrities like dolly parton and george clooney. >> she did throw a lot of

parties, and during those parties, he would sit in the corner, typically would come in. he was smiley and, you know, kind of friendly, but not outgoing. >> haskell is due in court monday and currently being held on a $2 million bail. tonight police in san francisco are looking for whoever did this. the front of this walgreens on 23rd and mission is entirely broken open with a smashed atm machine sitting right outside. sfpd tells us it happened around 415 this morning. officer say they started chasing two vehicles with several suspec inside, eventually losing them. they say the same suspects also burglarized a nearby gas station right before. if you know anything about this case, you're asked to call police. today, the city of fremont celebrated the diwali festival of lights event. the event was full of food, candle lighting and community. the area here is expected to

reopen by midnight tonight for diwali, the hindu festival of lights that is celebrated annually at the end of the harvest season. the outer sunset farmers market in mercantile celebrated diwali today. designs made with colorful powders welcomed guests from all around. the event was held on 37th avenue and ortega street and featured art activities for all ages. there were also chutney making sari demonstrations, music and food trucks. it is a sign of the holidays. the giant rockefeller christmas tree has now arrived in new york city. nypd officers helped escort the tree yesterday to its new home at rockefeller plaza and manhattan. this year's tree is from central new york state. standing 80ft tall, weighing 12 tons in about 80 to 85 years old. the tree is scheduled to be lit up for the first time on november 29th. spencer christian here. you are very familiar with

those. i certainly am. trees in new york city there many years in new york. special moment it is. >> and rockefeller plaza is one of my favorite spots in all of manhattan. it's just a stunning place, especially when the tree goes up and the lights are on and people are skating. nothing beats it. >> real live tree and a big one at that. >> that's true. and that is a big one. let's take a look at what's going on with our weather. we've got some big changes coming our way. looking at the satellite radar composite image right now, you see high pressure system which controlled our weather this week and brought us some really nice, pleasant, mild weather. but this low pressure system up in the gulf of alaska is strengthening and dropping southward. that's going to be our weather maker for much of this upcoming week. but right now, we're looking at calm conditions from the exploratorium camera looking toward the bay bridge. it's currently 57 here in san francisco and in san jose, 59, oakland 52 at mountain view and low to mid 50s at palo alto and half moon bay. and looking from emeryville toward san francisco, we see mainly calm conditions as well of the temperature readings

right now mid to upper 40s at novato and santa rosa low to mid 50s at napa, fairfield, concord and livermore and looking across the quiet embarcadero from our rooftop camera. let's check out our forecast headlines. clouds will increase tonight and tomorrow. first wave of rain arrives tuesday mainly in the north bay, but showers will reach other parts of the bay area as well. more rain and showers will follow wednesday, thursday and friday. now for tonight, under increasingly cloudy skies. look for overnight lows mainly in the mid to upper 40s. lows will not drop below 51 degrees or 50 here in san francisco and in oakland. highs tomorrow under partly cloudy skies with some breaks of sunshine. low 60s at the coast mid 60s right around the bay shoreline, we'll see mainly upper 60s inland, although 2 or 3 locations may top out at about 7071 degrees. okay. the first wave of stormy weather approaching us on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale is a level one, a storm of light intensity. that's for tuesday. it'll be rainy, but mainly in

the north bay with drier conditions in the south bay and scattered showers, of course, can occur just about anywhere and we expect slick roadways. here's our forecast animation starting at midnight tonight, notice how the clouds increase overnight. then we get a break late tomorrow before the clouds increase again on ahead of that first wave of rainfall, which is going to surge into the north bay tuesday morning. and as i pointed out, some of that rain will reach other parts of the bay area, but it'll be mainly a north bay event with rainfall totals from that first surge generally under a 10th of an inch for most of the bay area, except where it'll except in the north bay where it'll be much, much wetter. then we get that second and third surge of stormy weather coming in on wednesday with rainfall more widespread, heavier at times. and on thursday with showers even lingering into friday. so it's going to be a very wet week ahead once that first wave of rain arrives on tuesday. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. each of those first each of those four days, i should say, of rainfall will rank only about level one on the

in solutions. this is abc7 news. >> another weekend of war. israel and hamas intensifying the fight on the ground in gaza where hospitals are hitting their breaking point. some working by flashlight, others no longer operational. these videos from the israeli military showing the ruins of gaza city from the tops of idf tanks. and tonight, new word on the fate of those hostages held by hamas. these protesters in tel aviv

created a human chain demanding their release. now to the latest on the war between israel and hamas. the idf says it's closing in on gaza's main hospital, a location the idf claims sits on top of a hamas underground network. however doctors there say the hospital is running out, is running on dwindling power, adding that evacuating the hospital would only result in patient deaths. israel's prime minister, benjamin netanyahu told nbc's meet the press israel will not stop its campaign until hamas is destroyed. >> if you want peace, destroy hamas. if you want security, destroy hamas. if you want a future for israel, the palestinian ions, the middle east, destroy hamas. >> prime minister netanyahu added that there would be no cease fire unless all israeli hostages held in gaza are released and here in the bay area, one local man is helping keep the spotlight on hostages still being held by hamas. and

18 year old daughter, and she's one of the people that is listed as the children. >> can you tell me a little bit about them? >> sure. i mean, noga is 18. she was living at home with her parents, and she's just a sweet girl. you know, just like volleyball, like her friends. just kind of like any kids here. >> it's hard to even imagine what these hostages are facing right now. how they're kept underground. are they being fed? these are children. these are elderly. these are people who need medicine. and zach bodner is one of the bay area jewish leaders traveling to washington, d.c, where more than 250,000 people are expected to march for israel on tuesday. we want to let our government officials and everyone in washington, d.c. know that we have to bring home the hostages. we have to support israel in their war against terrorism. and we have to stand against anti semitism wherever it rears its ugly head. >> and as for oren, these posters, he says, are just one way he feels he can do his part.
