leaders are going to meet president biden arrives in the bay area for the apec summit just hours before china's president xi jinping. >> and of course, anticipation is building before tomorrow's meeting between the two most powerful countries on earth and their leaders. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. and i'm ama daetz. >> we have abc seven news team coverage with anchor kristen sze live at the epicenter of the activity at moscone center. get to that in a moment. >> but first, let's begin with zach fuentes who joins us live from sfo, where chinese president xi arrived late this afternoon. zach >> yeah, dan, president xi's plane arrived about an hour after president biden arrived here at sfo in air force one. and now with both presidents right here in the bay area, the plans are now in motion for tomorrow's high stakes meeting. president joe biden stepped off of air force one and into a packed agenda planned for his apec visit. biden was greeted by several local key leaders that included governor gavin newsom, first partner jennifer siebel newsom, congressman kevin mullin

and san francisco mayor london breed. what i hope is president biden will just really take away the beautiful, majestic views of san francisco, the excitement around apec, the hospitality from san franciscans. though biden has plenty on his agenda while in town for apec, one of the most important items is his meeting with chinese president xi jinping. their meeting is set to happen wednesday at filoli estate for four hours in san mateo county. biden previously defined his idea of a successful meeting to get back on a normal course. >> of course, bonding, being able to pick up the phone and talk to one another if there's a crisis, being able to make sure our military still have contact with one another, though the us and china have some differences, there are some common goals there are reports that an agreement could be announced on wednesday that would address illegal fentanyl trade. >> there are also reports the two nations could agree to limit the use of ai in nuclear weapons. and as the world looks to that meeting during apec, mayor breed is also hopeful for the benefit san francisco could reap. >> san francisco is the gateway to the asia pacific. we have

always been that place where the first consulate or the first sister city in asia was established in our city. and we hope that some newfound relationships and also reestablishing some old relationships will help us build upon the economic opportunities that we know we all so desperately need. >> it's also worth noting that in addition to president biden and president xi's arrival here at sfo, vice president kamala harris got here about 30 minutes before biden and air force two. she's back in san francisco almost a year to the day that she announced apec would be happening in the city right now. live at sfo, zach fuentes, abc seven news. all right, zach, thank you. >> demonstrators clashed outside sfo as she arrived and the crowd included hong kong national and supporters of tibet. there to protest china's policies and human rights record. there were also supporters of president xi waving chinese flags and welcoming welcoming him to the united states. >> supporters of xi and those

opposed to his president gathered in san francisco today. ahead of the landmark meeting between president biden and president xi. it is the first time in 12 months the two leaders have spoken to each other. the last time they met was on the sidelines of last november's apec summit in bangkok. >> between them, they've got bilateral issues, they've got regional issues, they've got geo political issues that are sources of friction in the relationship. >> us officials are hoping ji and biden's conversation will lead to a joint strategy to address the fentanyl crisis. precursor chemicals used to create fentanyl are exported worldwide from china and an agreement on the future of fentanyl production could be a big win for president biden and the city of san francisco. >> here's video from a short time ago of the situation at mission. and third, which is about one block from moscone center, where both supporters and protesters of china's president have gathered near the hotel where president xi is staying. you can see the large display of chinese flags, as well as the large police

presence. >> and this comes as another protest is getting underway at market and powell streets. abc seven news reporter suzanne phan joins us live to explain how the city is getting ready for all these rallies. suzanne. oh, well, there are so many police officers around me. >> this crowd getting larger and louder by the minute. let me step out of the way and give you a closer look. all lot of people here, as you can hear, ask or demanding for palestine to be freed. a lot of them are also asking for all us aid to israel to be ended. this is one of many demonstrations across the city during apec on third street near townsend in san francisco. hundreds of chinese americans came out with flags. >> it's very patriotic, you know, for the chinese community, the hope to send a strong message welcoming chinese president xi jinping. >> all the chinese people are very happy to see the president. xi will be here and will have the meeting with the president of biden. and it's a sign of the

improvement of relationship between china and the us demonstrators for various social causes believe apec is the perfect setting for getting their message across. >> the economic summit brings heads of states, ceos and lots of eyes from around the world on sunday, dozens gathered to demonstrate, starting at the embarcadero and heading toward fifth street and moscone. on monday, protesters projected this onto the side of the embarcadero, calling for a ceasefire in gaza. and these performers rappelling down the side of the transamerica pyramid building, also making the same demands. so as the world watches as president joe biden meets with top world leaders like chinese president xi jinping and canadian prime minister justin trudeau, city leaders say they're ready for anything. in san francisco, you know, we're used to dealing with a lot of protests, as you know, throughout the year. >> we probably have at least one protest somewhere in the city every day. so our officers are really skilled at handling those, facilitating first amendment activities. >> the protests during apec are sure to impact people throughout the city of san francisco, but
5:07 pm
having protests in the city at the same time where we have dignitaries in the city is going to make things a little more difficult to get around. police say they're ready. >> we've got all hands on deck. we have other agencies from around the state in the bay area that are helping us, namely the california highway patrol, who sent us, you know, a large number of officers last week. >> the san francisco chief of police announced that his entire department has been mobilized. this is the first time in decades, which means every able bodied officer will be working and we'll be working 12 to 14 hour shifts. >> we'll have coverage, daytime and nighttime at. and our goal is to be prepared for anything and everything that may come our way. and tonight, protesters along market stand in support of palestine, again calling for a cease fire in gaza tomorrow morning, climate activists will rally and then they'll march to demand that citibank and exxonmobil stop funding fossil fuels. >> we're live here in san francisco. suzanne phan abc7 news.
5:08 pm
>> okay, suzanne, thanks a lot. now today's meetings at apec are wrapping up at the moscone center, but it has certainly been a busy, productive a day full of activities. abc seven news anchor kristen sze has been there all day covering what was going on. kristin take us through it. >> well, dan, you know what? in stark contrast to what we're seeing on the streets that suzanne is reporting on, what the protests and also at the airport as the welcome arrivals, you know, it's actually relatively quiet today here at the moscone center because we did have ministerial meetings. but it is still the calm before the storm, if you will. heads of states will actually show up here tomorrow and that is when things will get busy here. but today, let's show you some video. when they arrive, they will be meeting in these rooms in the moscone center. they're all set up, as you can see, for the high level discussions. and some of them as these signs indicate, will be used for those one on one bilateral meetings between leaders. although the meeting between president biden and chinese president xi jinping will be held offsite, as we reported, in the more private location of the filoli estate.
5:09 pm
but today, these rooms were used mainly by the cabinet level officials and foreign ministers. now, us secretary of state antony blinken and us trade ambassador katherine tai led the opening session of foreign ministers this morning. blinken really raised some eyebrows with comments he made that some interpreted as a swipe at china in his opening statement, blinken called on pacific rim nations who show economic independence. he asked that nations choose their own trading partners. the us, of course, has criticized china for applying economic pressure on asian nations to stay close to china in terms of trade and military alliances. meanwhile, at the national center for apec's sustainability forum at a luncheon today, i caught up with the us special presidential envoy for climate secretary john kerry. while he didn't answer my question about what type of climate statement he hopes will come out of the summit after the leaders meet, he emphasized the urgency for climate initiatives during his talk, pointing out that if we continue on the path
5:10 pm
of our current emissions and actions, our planet will be five degrees warmer by the end of the century. having just returned from china to lay the groundwork for potential collaboration, john kerry told the audience to watch for news on possible agreement for climate initiatives, pointing out that should we continue on this path, it will be disastrous. now one of the vital agencies here that you may not have heard of is the import export bank of the united states. it works with small, medium and large companies to make investments and compete in the global marketplace. a short while ago, i talked with rita joe lewis. she is the president of the board of directors of the bank. i asked about the projects that they are supporting. >> you know, in the 21 economies we have just been so excited that we're here at apec because we have a number of agreements with the with the different economies, with my other colleagues to talk about how we can support projects, whether it's in the renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy storage space, whether it's around and transformational exports, looking at ways to

provide more financing around the sectors and semiconductors, ai, quantum computing, water sanitation, we we're also been very supportive around working on in with small businesses in all things that they're working on now. >> these are conversations that are going to have to involve the biggest ceos of the biggest companies as well. and that's where tomorrow comes in. that is the start of the ceo summit. that is part of the apec summit. very important. we'll be hearing from the ceos of microsoft, openai, visa, google, lots of big companies. and i have a one on one lined up with one of the chief executives at boeing to talk about their sustainability efforts as well. so you want to stick around for a full day here from the moscone tomorrow. dan and ama all right. >> a lot to come. thank you so much, kristen, for that coverage and large black barricades have started to go up along the

embarcadero. it's all part of the security measures for world leaders who will gather at the exploratorium tomorrow for president biden's apec party. one lane on northbound embarcadero is closed to cars between broadway and green streets. officials say commuters coming into the city this week should brace for detours and don't forget, lanes on the bay bridge are shut down because of apec until friday night. >> the closures began this morning and include one lane in each direction from the toll plaza to san francisco. two off ramps are also closed at the fifth street off ramp from westbound 8-80 and the fourth street off ramp from eastbound 80 are closed from 5 a.m. until 9 p.m. every day. an ad for everything from the protest to the street closure and the events. >> uh- abc7 news is your station when it comes to apec 2023. our complete coverage has everything you need to know. you will find it all on the front page of our website. abc7 news.com. well it was a wet start to the day and we're not done with the rain just yet. >> here's a live look outside at

the person referred to as target one on david depapes so-called hit list. >> abc seven news reporter stephanie sierra has the latest from inside the courtroom. >> a chilling hour of testimony where david depape took the stand, breaking out in tears several times as he described his beliefs about hollywood and his attempt to, quote, search for the truth. showing little remorse for the attack on paul pelosi. depape lived in hawaii for two years before moving to the bay area to work as a carpenter. he told the jury he would spend his off time sitting in the garage where he lived, playing video games, watching youtube and listening to right wing podcasts. depape testified that one of those podcasters, james lindsey, talked extensively about speaker emerita nancy pelosi and a university of michigan professor. also known as target one on his so-called hit list. >> if there are jurors on this panel that feel empathetic to him, that believe him, all it takes is one federal criminal

defense attorney adam gassner says depape did not meet the bar for a federal insanity defense. >> but to reach the bar to be federally insane, to put in an insanity defense, you have to show by a clear and convincing evidence that he does not know the conduct that he's participating in. >> he doesn't appreciate the gravity of it. >> depape told the jury he only remembered hitting paul pelosi once. yet the surgeon who treated mr. pelosi testified he had injuries from being hit three times, including a five centimeter laceration at the top of his head, close to a critical blood vessel. the crux of this case comes down to the facts and whether or not the evidence supports the charges. the defense spent a great deal of time today trying to paint a picture that david depape was not motivated by. speaker emérita nancy pelosi's official duties as a member of congress. but even the judge pointed out during pretrial discussion the evidence refutes that depapes target one. gail rubin, a professor who studies anthropology and women's and

afternoon evening. those light to moderate showers spreading across the bay area and there's a slight possibility of thunder, just a very unstable air mass. so we're going to keep it in pretty much off and on all week long. so 6:00 tonight, a few showers in the north bay. the shower line lifts northward and stays off the coast through tomorrow morning. but then look what happens as we head into tomorrow afternoon, that next round comes in. there will be some pockets of moderate rain going into the evening commute. could be a little bit dicey for the evening commute. so plan accordingly. thursday morning, we still have those showers coming in and more waves thursday afternoon is when our best opportunity over the next 48 hours will be for an isolated thunderstorm or two going into the evening hours. and then here comes some more wet weather for your friday and can't rule out thunder there either. so rainfall estimates taking you through early friday morning, anywhere from about a 10th of an inch to just over an inch of rain. these numbers have been really fluctuating. so depending
