comes to life expectancy. >> from abc news in new york, this is america this morning. >> good thursday morning, everyone. i'm andrea fujii in for rhiannon and i'm lionel moise in for andrew. >> we begin this morning with the chaos in washington. >> overnight violence erupted as a crowd protesting israel's war against hamas clashed with police, forcing the urgent evacuation of some top members of congress who were reportedly rushed into the basement of an office building. >> that's seen unfolding hours after israeli troops raided the largest hospital in gaza and now questions are being raised about what they found as they continue to target hamas fighters. >> abc's justin finch is here with the latest beginning with that violence in washington. justin good morning. >> andrea good morning. the clashes between police and protesters broke out just as democrats were meeting nearby. by overnight, police evacuated members of congress from the headquarters of the democratic

national committee in washington as protests outside the building turned violent. look, i've got thrown, people getting thrown down the stairs. california congressman brad sherman was among those evacuated and a dozen or so very well armed police officers came charging in and they whisked us off to the us capitol. an estimated 150 people were protest, chanting israel's war against hamas. some blamed police for stoking tensions because it was so immediate. >> as soon as we got out here, it seemed like we weren't welcome. >> video shows some in the crowd pushing police before officers fired pepper spray. some protesters grabbed on to metal barricades as police moved in to make arrests. >> we didn't expect the way that things escalated. and we knew coming out here that we did not plan to escalate as protesters. we came to say something. and we hope that we were heard. >> global outrage has been building after israeli forces raided the largest hospital in gaza. >> we're now, as you can see, in

an mri room, claiming they found evidence of a hamas command center with weapons stored behind mri machines. >> there is a an ak 47. >> there are cartridges and ammo . there are grenades in here. of course, uniform. >> abc news could not independent verify what was found. hamas denies running a command center there. and israel has not yet provided evidence of tunnels it claims are beneath the hospital. abc's matt gutman pressed a military spokesperson on what was found. >> we've found hundreds of tunnel shafts that have already been exposed. booby trapped, many of them. >> but i mean, at the hospital. >> yes. so i'm saying in the surrounding area, there's hundreds of tunnel shafts that we've already found. now, this it takes time to find them. and that's where we're now looking. and we're continuously looking inside the hospital and also in its vicinity as we're fighting hamas. we know that this is

another stronghold by hamas and we're going after them wherever they are. >> back in the hospital, one doctor claims the icu has run out of oxygen and 43 people have died, but dozens of premature babies removed from their incubators due to lack of electricity are still alive. have in the meantime, there's new movement toward a deal to free at least 50 of the hostages being held by hamas, including women and children. they would be released in exchange for a temporary ceasefire and the release of some palestinians held in israeli jails. but sources say israel has requested a three day cease fire while hamas is demanding seven days and back here in washington, capitol police say six of its officers were injured in that protest outside the dnc headquarters last night. at least one person was arrested. and lionel. >> all right, justin, thank you for that update. the other big story this morning, the california summit between president biden and chinese

president xi. the two leaders appearing to strike a friendlier tone after months of rising tensions. >> and i believe that there are some of the most constructive and productive discussions we've had. >> president biden sounding optimistic after a marathon four hour summit with china's president xi jinping by making two major announcements, including a new push to crack down on the export of fentanyl. and the biggest news, both leaders agreeing to resume military to military communications. >> those were cut off last year after nancy pelosi's visit to taiwan and china had suspended those talks in retaliation. in addition to that, these two countries are agreeing to work together to curb the flow of precursor chemicals for fentanyl and administration official had earlier said china is going to directly go after specific companies that are making those precursor chemicals, biden and xi projecting a friendlier relationship, taking this stroll through a garden at the site of

the summit outside san francisco . >> but asked whether he trusts president xi, biden said this i trust but verify is that old saying goes my responsibility is to make it make this rational and manageable. >> so it so it doesn't result in conflict. >> so many difficult issues remain like the future of taiwan and the theft of us intellectual property. president biden last night was asked whether he would still refer to xi as a dictator. >> well, look, he is i mean, he was a dictator in the sense that he he is a guy who runs a country that is a communist country, that based on a former government, totally different than ours. >> that's not the first time biden has referred to xi as a dictator. and overnight, the chinese foreign ministry responded, calling the, quote, dictator rhetoric extremely wrong. >> as millions get ready to fly over the holidays, a new report warns the us air traffic control system needs urgent action. independent experts looked at a

string of recent close calls at airports. they say outdated technology is part of the problem, and they're calling on the faa to address staffing levels which were found to be sustainable staffing leads to a lot of overtime, a lot of overtime leads to a lot of fatigue at and that's why it's important to get at this underlying structural issue. >> there's not a silver bullet. >> the new york times reports 99% of the country's air traffic control facilities are understaffed. the faa says it will review the experts recommendations. >> amazon is pulling seven eyedrop products from its website after a warning from the fda, amazon was told the products are not known to be safe and effective and were not approved for sale in the us. the fda gave the retailer 15 days to respond. amazon says safety is a top priority in the eyedrops in question have been removed. we have a list of those products at abcnews.com. >> now to a horrifying scene near a school in las vegas. a

teenager beaten to death allegedly by a group of classmates. police now revealing new details about the case this morning. police in las vegas are asking for the public's help in finding two more students. they say were involved in the fatal beating of a 17 year old boy in this alley near a local high school. eight teens have already been arrested. the suspects as young as 13. in what you see in the video is approximately ten subjects kicking, stomping and punching. >> our victim, jonathan, as he is on the ground and not defending himself and to the point where he becomes unconscious. >> police say jonathan lewis had joined a friend in a prearranged fight after school all over a stolen pair of headphones and a vape pen. many classmates in shock, just unnecessary to take away his life. >> and for all like all those people to jump in over just something so like simple. >> so his father says jonathan was trying to protect his smaller friend when he was beaten and died. days later on a fundraising site. he remembered

streets this morning. prosecutors in new york say the seizure of knockoffs is the largest in us history. agents hauled away about 220,000 fake designer bags, clothes, shoes and other luxury items from a storage facility. two men are under arrest after a year of strikes in hollywood and the auto industry. >> today, it's starbucks turn. some workers at the coffee chain are walking off the job during one of the busiest days of the year. here's abc's derrick dennis this morning. >> starbucks popular red cup day has been renamed by some workers red cup rebellion thousands of unionized baristas fury s over staffing levels or going on strike today to take away the profits for the company to put pressure on them. they say they're not equipped to handle the huge crowds expected during today's annual red cup promotion when the company hands out reusable cups with the purchase of a holiday drink. daisy federspiel baer, a supervisor in seattle, says in the past, these kind of promotional days have brought up to 220 transactions every half hour, a 40% boost in

business. >> they told us they tried to staff the floor as much as possible, but baristas were are incredibly stressed. their mental health was declining and we even sustained some physical injuries, which was not good. >> some workers went on strike during last year's red cup day, which was reportedly starbucks highest single sales day ever. the union is demanding a new contract with better pay staffing and more local control, including the right to turn off mobile orders. in response, starbucks says the workers union hasn't agreed to meet for contract bargaining in more than four months and says they call on workers united to fulfill their obligations and engage in the work of negotiating. >> i really wish that i could be in there serving you coffee. i do. but with the drastic understaffing and the toll that that takes on our baristas, unfortunately, we have to push for better and we aren't getting that from starbucks right now. the strike is for one day only and affects about 360 unionized
