>> well, look, he is now at six meeting day in the bay. >> president biden, chinese president xi waking up. in san francisco. a high profile meeting yesterday day and it was really just a lot of excitement in the bay for apec. yeah. and we can't wait to share it all with you, including those amazing fireworks that i got to see there was a party right over here. president biden there hosting gwen stefani performed sing. and there's still two more days of apec left. so a lot to tell you about, including some new traffic closures. >> you're going to want to know about. jobina is going to be all over that and we will get to that in just a second. but first, we're going to start with what the weather looks like this morning. yeah so we are starting out with mostly cloudy skies, dry conditions for many of us. >> there's a couple of isolated showers just in the santa cruz mountains and most of us were dry. right now. and we're just waking up to a lot of cloud cover. we are still using the
6:02 am
storm impact scale for another day today, just like yesterday. the best chance will come later on this evening. but today, the showers not as widespread as what we experienced last night. outside this morning, we'll look at our sutro tower camera showing you the golden gate bridge. it's a blend of sun and clouds for much of the day. i think the best chance for most of us is after 4:00 pm to find those scattered showers. they'll be very light in nature. so certainly if you have evening plans, you want to take the umbrella with you. we'll have those temperatures mainly topping out in the 60s for daytime highs. we do have more wet weather for part of the weekend. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. but let's check in with jobina, see how we're doing with traffic on this thursday. >> thank you, drew. good morning, everybody. so we are going to look at a couple of crashes we're following right now, starting in hayward. you can see we have some patchy traffic there and some minor slowdowns. southbound 8 to 84 west eighth street. your speeds around 38mph. and that spot and not too slow due to a crash. we're following in a little closer to san pablo i'd say westbound 80 pass el portal drive around 45mph. not bad at all. 880 at the coliseum camera. those headlights traveling in

the southbound direction. we're looking good for the most part on our major roadways. as reggie mentioned at the beginning of our show, we do have some apec closures to talk about and that'll be in a few minutes, guys. >> all right. thank you, jobina. now, here's a look at some of the major events as apec continues today. so today is the second and final day of the apec ceo summit. there's going to be a panel featuring salesforce ceo marc benioff and tesla ceo elon musk. president biden is also expected to speak there later in the day. president biden will be delivering remarks and participating in the indo-pacific economic framework. family photo and then ending the night. the president and first lady will be hosting the apec dinner at the legion of honor museum this morning. >> president biden is touting what he's calling important progress in us-china relations after a marathon face to face meeting with chinese president xi jinping. it happened in woodside at the filoli estate. both men, greeted by protesters as they arrived at the venue yesterday morning. clearly not all the protesters share the same views because we did at one point see a scuffle. abc7 news

reporter lena howland has more on what was discussed and the new agreements between the two leaders during that four hour meeting. lena. reggie two major announcements came out of yesterday's meeting. >> the first was a new push to crack down on the export of fentanyl and the second was an agreement to resume military to military talks. the president biden came out of yesterday's meeting sounding optimistic, saying they had some of the most constructive and productive discussions they've had. so far. military to military communication has been cut off since last year after congresswoman nancy pelosi visited taiwan. china had suspended those talks in retaliation. >> so we're back to direct, open, clear, direct communications and on a on a direct basis, vital miscalculations on either side can or can cause real, real trouble with a with a country like china or any other major
6:05 am
country. and so i think we made real progress there as well. >> as for the fentanyl agreement , the two countries agreed to work together to curb the flow of the precursor chemicals for fentanyl. an administration official had earlier said china is going to directly go after specific companies that are producing those chemicals. and back here live along the embarcadero, outside of where president biden held his apec party last night, we are seeing construction actively happening. crews are actively taking down the barricade shades, the black fencing and some of those street closures as well, cleaning up from that party just about as quickly as it went up. for now, reporting live in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. >> i'm amazed at how fast they got to it. thanks so much, lena. there is a positive sign the meeting went well and it has to do with pandas at his dinner event last night, xi jinping announced that some of the pandas could be coming back to san diego zoo. a little over a week ago, some giant pandas were
6:06 am
returned to china by the national zoo in washington, dc. the san diego zoo actually lost their pandas to china in 2019. pan to diplomacy dates back to the 70s when a pair of pandas were gifted by beijing. there are only four pandas left in the us. they're at the atlanta zoo and they are supposed to be returned next year as lena just mentioned, those barricades are coming down along the embarcadero and dignitas from around the world. >> were there just a few hours ago. really attending the official apec reception for president biden and first lady dr. jill biden. it was at the exploratorium, the speakers included vice president kamala harris, governor newsom and warriors head coach steve kerr, abc's seven spoke with former senator john kerry, who is the first us special presidential envoy for climate. he says coming together now is more important than ever. >> we have the middle east in flames. you have ukraine, you have the challenge of the climate crisis. yes. and we all need to pull together. there is no way for any one country to
6:07 am
solve any one of those problems, let alone all of them. now there was really one interested part of president biden's speech. >> got our attention. he mentioned governor newsom and may have alluded to his future political ambitions. >> i want to thank him. he's been one hell of a governor man. matter of fact, he could be anything you want. he could have on the job. i'm looking for. >> the job he's looking for is the presidency. he's running for president in 2024 to the public. governor newsom has firmly, repeatedly denied any chance that he would go for the white house next year. it's a possibility he could run in the future. >> abc seven news is your station. when it comes to everything apec, we're posting continuous coverage on our website and suite of streaming apps. that's where you can find our full traffic maps, new updates and stream major news as it breaks. you can download the abc7 bay area app wherever you stream. breaking news this morning. a pilot has died after a plane crash in la jolla last

francisco this morning with the details on those agreements and the new interview this morning with national security advisor john kirby traveling with the president. lena >> yeah, that's right. earlier this morning, john kirby, a spokesperson for the national security council, he was just giving his remarks and his reaction to these talks on gma and he talked about how a four hour meeting may not necessarily solve military tension right away, but it was a significant step forward with two major agreements coming out of that meeting and really two big deliverables, one coming out of this meeting knowing that the military to military communications will restart at various levels, not just at the top, but down to the theater commander level and below. >> and number two, getting that agreement to have the chinese crack down on law enforcement and export of these chemical ingredients that make fentanyl a huge, huge achievement. but there's a lot more work to do, military to military talks between the two countries were

cut off originally one year ago after congresswoman nancy pelosi visited taiwan. >> as for the fentanyl agreement, the two countries agreed to work together to curb the flow of the precursor chemicals for fentanyl and an administration official had earlier said china is going to directly go after specific companies that are producing those chemicals. and back here live along the embarcadero, we are seeing sort of the aftermath of president biden's apec party held at the exploratorium last night. if you take a look behind me, you can see that work being taken down. the billboards that were in front of the explorer exploratorium are down and the crews right now are in the process of removing those shipping containers. you'll also notice some of the roadblocks and all of that tall black fencing along the embarcadero has since been removed. and so that's our look outside of the embarcadero for now. reporting live in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena, thank you. president

6:36 am
that you could see from lena's live shot there that the embarcadero is in the process of getting back to normal. but we do have still events at chase center tonight. so a little further down that impact there. they're playing oklahoma city at seven. that's with the warriors. and then tomorrow night at 730, we have miss lauryn hill performing there for her concert. a reminder, i mentioned this earlier in our show, but we still have one westbound lane and one eastbound lane closed on the bay bridge that will reopen tomorrow night at 9:00. and then we also have the fifth street and fourth street off ramps closed as well. and that will reopen officially done with all of that friday night at 9 p.m. as well. and then all normal service for bart, caltrain, ac transit and the san francisco bay ferry. so traffic has been pretty smooth. a lot of people have been heeding the warnings. so good luck out there if you're traveling into san francisco today. kumasi. >> thanks, jobina. now, outside the exploratorium demonstrates arrested as they came right to the front of those security gates, shouting their message to all the high profile guests
