takeoff from the american airlines says it was the best start for any thanksgiving ever. this plane will be taking off for charlotte taking the millions of passengers flying american airlines today alone, every airline will be challenged. >> airports and airlines put to the test as a record number of travelers are set to take off. >> i'm travelling to new jersey. >> tsa expecting to screen 30 million passengers through the holiday. now stormy weather hitting the east coast threatens to have a major impact. >> mother nature is of course the x factor in all of this. we will use every tool at our disposal to keep cancellations and delays in place. >> well over 90% of flights took off on time far better than the

average day, but still more than 3,000 flights were delayed including joseph porter's flight home to chicago. >> it is generally about two hours, sometimes under two hours, so now to be in an eight hour situation, i'm just like "oh my god." >> the faa thinks today and tomorrow will be the busiest of the holiday stretch. 50,000 flights on wednesday alone and it is a guarantee that some of them will be delayed or canceled. >> that is great advice, but the better advice would be that if you do find yourself having a modification on your itinerary or a significant delay or conditionall cancellation, you don't want to wait to make changes, you want to get to it right away. >> and on the chance that your flight is significantly delayed or canceled you want to remember that under federal law, delayed because of weather or any other reason, you're entitled to either a full refund or to be

rebooked on another flight. before you fly you should down load your airlines app. most people are driving to their thanksgiving destinations, we have the latest on that. >> good morning. more than 49 million americans taking to the roadways. and most people that are driving will be driving some 50 miles from their home marking the third highest thanksgiving travel forecast since they started tracking, and the roadways here are among the busiest in the station and a big thanks to kabc for the birds eye view. a lot of drivers taking advantage of the lower gas prices. the national average is 329, but here in california we average out about 496 regardless of where you are. the busiest travel day it

wednesday, can so get out the door early or wait until 6:00 p.m. to make it to your destination. thank you. now we're going to turn to the navy plane that ended up in a bay. martha raddatz is here with that story for us. good morning. >> good morning, robin, the good news is none of the nine people on that plane were injured, but it must have been a harrowing few minutes as it skidded off of the run way and into the water. the navy plane was landing at the marine corp base about 10 miles from honolulu. it was cloudy and rainy and visibility was only about a mile. once the plane was in the water, fortunately shallow water, the passengers and crew were able to quickly get out of the airport. the first responders then put up a floating barrier. you can see there, to protect the environment from leaked fuel. the aircraft, about the same

size as an a320 for reconnaissance and intelligence gathering, they're based in washington and it was not a great way to start thanksgiving week, but all of us thankful that everyone is okay. >> overseas now to the war between israel and hamas. a deal could be reached on hostages at any moment. we want to go to matt gutman on the scene in israel. >> good morning, the families of the hostages here are keeping up a steady drum beat, a pressure nd the red cross. to finalize this morning we spoke to a hamas official who say they're very close, they're waiting for israel to accept the terms if the israeli cabinet meeting over there discussing this broadly. it includes about 50 hostages, maybe more. including women and children, and they would get a five-day cease fire and a huge influx of

aide including fuel. the hostages will be released in batches because hamas is not keeping them all together and partly because some of them are being kept by splinter groups. israel is concerned they will not be able to maintain control over the skies and hamas will drag out that release extending the cease fire. the white house sounding very optimistic despite both sides telling us they're very suspicion of the other side and they hope it will fall through. >> we hope it all works out. we're going to move on to the latest of elon musk. he has sued an organization for a alleged smear campaign. >> after media matters accused x of placing brand name adds next to

musk's says he would not let the truth get out of the way of a story they want to public to drive advertisers from the platform. they found ads for apple and ibm next to posts that tout hitler. they say that x changed the algorithmic and said not a single authentic user saw those ads next to that content. big companies like apple, ibm, and abc news parent company, disney, pulled advertising after he supported a conspiracy theory. this morning the group is also facing an investigation by the attorney general of texas who said, robin, that he wants to make sure the public is not deceived by radical left-wing organizations.

step last year. the congress approved and the president requested a pay adjustment for everybody in tsa to finally, in 22 years, put us on the same pay scale as every other federal employee. that reduced our attrition by about 50%. we have more applicants for jobs. we're where we should be with staffing and we're ready for the holidays. >> staffing is a problem across the airline industry so you're confident you have enough agents for the holiday rush? >> yes, and what we do as well is if we have an airport we expect to be particularly busy like las vegas vegas after the f1 event over the weekend, we ask officers to volunteer to go to las vegas, for example, spend time to help out the team. we augment where we need to. >> and there is a lot of tension across the country because of the israel and hamas war, have you done anything to boost security or to ramp up to protect the passengers. >> we're also looking at

threats. they change all of the time. after october 7th the threats did increase. we did a number things. you'll see greater police presence, greater presence of k-9 teams, additional screening as necessary depending on the circumstances. these are largely unseen by passengers, but it reflects our adjustments. >> what's your top advice for travelers this year? >> best advice is give yourself a little extra time. you know as you go to the airport if you take an uber, it might not get there in the time you expect or if you're driving you might hit traffic or not be able to find a parking space. airports will be busy, aircraft will be full, give yourself extra time to take the stress off and allow to prepare for anything that might impede the smooth transition through the entire process. >> as we like to say, pack a lot of patience, you know? you're going to need that.
