thanksgiving. i'm dionne lim. from parades to dinner to lending a much needed hand. there's a lot to be thankful for this year. let's begin our coverage of today's festivities with a look at the people spending their thanksgiving by giving back. here's abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez. >> hi. good morning. salvation army. >> the salvation army board member and volunteer david ogburn delivers thanksgiving meals to seniors at their homes. >> because it's the least i can do on holidays like this. i think especially this time of year, this can be hard on some people this time of year during the holidays, especially those people who don't have a lot of family and don't have anywhere to go. thank you. good morning. >> ogburn realizes that for homebound seniors, this might be their only interaction for the day. lucy liu so appreciative of the delivery and so happy and thank you very much. in all the salvation army delivering about 4000 meals to those in need in san francisco, taking 200 routes

through the city, hundreds of volunteers making this happen, like victor chin, who has been volunteering for 30 years. >> i believe that, you know, we need to give back to the people who are less fortunate. you know, i've been blessed with so many different things in life. i need to give back to those who haven't been and, you know, just make them feel all happy and joyful during this time. >> now, while the focus today is thanksgiving, the salvation army also has its angel tree program to give toys to kids in need. >> we're we're trying to serve more people and we know the need is greater. and as inflation happens and cost of everything continues to go up, people are having difficult times just making ends meet and we don't want the kids to go go without or go with less. >> for more information about the salvation army san francisco programs, you can go to their website in san francisco. gloria rodriguez, abc7 news. >> now nearby in another corner of the tenderloin, saint

anthony's handed out 2000 meals. volunteers helped cut up 110 turkeys and 700 pounds of potatoes. they also serve those meals to those less fortunate. saint anthony's offers meals all year round, and they are also in need of volunteers. in january and february, when fewer people sign up to help. meantime, glide held its annual thanksgiving meal and service today. san francisco mayor london breed joined in at the service the church gave out hundreds of warm thanksgiving meals to some of san francisco's hardest to reach today. many are struggling amidst the drug overdose crisis. abc seven news reporter tara campbell was up close, capturing it all. >> i know 250 warm thanksgiving meals are being loaded up, glides harm reduction team is reaching some of san francisco's most vulnerable. >> it's just nice to be able to do this today as a sister for we're always looking at giving back to the community and doing what we can. >> sister anya streets a member of the sisters of perpetual indulgence, an order of queer

and trans activists known best as felony castro. at her day job here at glide. the team is often on the streets, handing out safe consumption supplies like clean syringes and drug testing strips and connecting people to treatment and other services. we've got some thanksgiving meal for you. >> all right. >> but on this day, it's all about making sure people get a meal. louis what does it mean to get a meal like this today? >> oh, a lot right now. yeah, a lot. because it's. yeah, we don't get really a whole lot of meals out here. but yeah, it's, it helps a lot out here. louis lives in an rv in the bayview area and he's battling addiction . >> what do you, what do you use? >> speed. heroin. uh weed. >> does a fentanyl worry? >> you know, i don't do fentanyl, and i don't mess with it. i don't care for it. really. it's a bad thing. >> does it worry you that you. that it could be in the other drugs, though? >> yeah. yeah, it do. i do. that's why i have test strips and all that. >> fentanyl is 50 times more potent than heroin and it's fueling record high overdose deaths. san francisco is on pace

for its deadliest year yet amid the drug overdose crisis. >> i see too many friends die every day. every day in the street. carlos says he's been in and out of treatment and is determined to recover a drug addiction. use a crack cocaine for 22 years already, 22 years. and i feel bad, you know, that's why i want to quit. >> a simple thanksgiving dinner is going a long way. >> i feel happy. people bring bring food. >> you know, they have messages on the inside, too. >> and these cards are also making people happy, crafted by local students, one of the cards making its way into these little hands. marvin lobos is picking up a meal for himself and his daughter every everybody needs helps, you know, that's what i try to do. >> help somebody else, too. if you help me, that's great. that's great. you know, that's what i can say. thank you so much. you know, tara campbell, abc seven news. >> i'm zach fuentes here in the south bay. and like a lot of other places here in san jose, many people are not fortunate

enough to spend this thanksgiving indoors. so some advocates brought thanksgiving dinner and a whole lot more out to them. >> i'm very appreciative. i love that people come out here and do this for us. >> ahmed has been unhoused in san jose for 17 years. he says it's through his own fault. but still, the conditions he lives in are tough and unrelenting. even on thanksgiving. >> every bit of clothes that i've gotten from, you know, people or whatever, it gets wet. so like it's hard for us, like, to keep our clothes dry this thanksgiving, though, some relief was brought by local advocates directly to him and others who are unhoused. >> i feel blessed for so many things that i have in my life that it's nice to give back once in a while. >> volunteers with hands out care bay area came to this parking lot that borders many tents and encampments. a spot many unhoused call home. though many community centers and churches have events for people in need. hector garcia says that bringing food directly to this community is important. >> they had the transportation. they can even get on the bus, be quiet because a lot of times they feel like they're left

behind. so for us to come over here, we make our day and it makes a big difference. >> but it's not just food that's top of mind for advocates. sean cartwright with the unhoused response group also brought down necessities that she hopes will help beyond the thanksgiving holiday. here we have a few tents. >> we have sleeping bags, items that will go a long way for people like ahmed. >> if i didn't have a dry sleeping bag tonight, i'd be really, really cold because to some folks, the meal isn't what's important. >> what's important is that blanket or that tarp, you know, whatever it might be. so and sometimes it's just a little bit of levity in san jose. >> zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> in san rafael, volunteers picked up prepared meals from vivillon. the nonprofit handed out 160 meals to homebound seniors or those who are chronically ill. vivillon also fed people at its offices. it is estimated 1 in 3 older adults in marin county struggle to put food on the table. and like us here at abc seven, many people

are working this thanksgiving. many are first responders missing out on that family time to help others. abc seven news reporter luz pena surprised many of them to say thank you. >> on a day where it's all about gratitude. we went on a mission to spread just that. we just got some flowers to say thank you to many who don't typically hear those words can't wait to give them out in san francisco's chinatown, we spotted a beloved paramedic. q come this way. q is part of the team that was giving out food for seniors today. >> we just finished his route. it's 13 mills and then we got a second route for a total of 15 more mills. wow. this is actually on the other side in the avenues. >> so this is how you spend thanksgiving in. >> yes, it's actually pretty fun. i like it. it's a good feeling. >> so we want to say thank you to you. oh thank you. this is sweet for this next one, we got an accomplice. okay? so we just

got to the salvation army event for thanksgiving and we're here to surprise lieutenant mariano elias with the san francisco fire department. he has no idea. his oldest daughter just recorded the sweetest message to say thank you to him. let's go get him. mariano, how many years have you been a san francisco firefighter? >> i've been a firefighter for over 23 years. wow. and you're working today? >> thanksgiving uh- today i'm working. >> and so are the brave men and women of the san francisco fire department. >> we're talking about family. and you have three kids. your oldest is sending you a message. >> we're super grateful for all that you do. >> i love my kids. it's tough unfortunately, this job has allowed me to provide as a father for my children. and they're outstanding kids. on her way to the next location, we noticed a samtrans bus driver on

deadly crash at the border security checkpoint. the driver was a man from new york who had just left a casino with his wife. both were killed. authorities say he was driving his bentley 100 miles an hour when he hit a median, flew over a fence and crashed. new developments now in the israel-hamas war. a cease fire and a release of hostages is now set to happen on friday. abc news reporter patrick reevell has the latest now from tel aviv . >> qatar's foreign ministry saying the four day pause is set to begin friday at 7 a.m. local time. then the first hostages will be released later that afternoon under the terms of the

deal, 50 hostages held captive in gaza. women and children are to be released. in exchange, israel to free at least 150 palestinian prisoners. all women and minors. the deal reached wednesday was mediated by qatar, egypt and the us. senior administration officials telling abc news president biden has been very hands on in the hostage negotiations is urging the emir of qatar to press hamas to accept the deal and urging israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu to do the same. during the pause in the conflict, israel agreeing to allow hundreds of trucks of much needed humanitarian relief, medical aid and fuel into the besieged gaza strip. this 22 year old student in gaza telling abc that aid is desperately needed about the food. >> we really eat one meal every single day because the source of food really, really very expensive right now. >> israel's government says it's received an initial list of the names to be released and has notified families whose loved

ones names are on it. the first 13 hostages are to be handed over on friday and at least ten more each day until the four day pause in the war expires. israel signaling that cease fire could be extended up to six days more if hamas frees more hostages free. americans are reportedly on the full list, including three year old abigail moore. adan though it's not confirmed if she will be among those freed friday, which is also her birthday. patrick reevell, abc news, tel aviv. pro-palestine protesters tried to disrupt the annual macy's thanksgiving day parade in new york this morning. >> the protesters broke through barriers, sat down in the street. some even glued themselves to the ground. the parade floats were able to go around them and the protesters were taken into custody. a bay area favorite was among the sights at today's parade. the 57 member troupe spread holiday cheer along the entire parade route, one kick at a time. this was their sixth year at the celebration. >> an millions of people along

it's as much a tradition on thanksgiving as football and eating the turkey in san francisco. thousands took part in this fun run around golden gate park for those making room for dinner. by the way, the five kilometer race burned about 600

calories as and it was a sea of blue shirts that covered downtown san jose for the silicon valley turkey trot. the biggest of all, bay area thanksgiving races. the event has raised $11 million for local charities. and another san francisco tradition is eating crab for thanksgiving. but that is a little harder to do this year because local crab season has been delayed until at least december. even so, we found plenty of crabs at this seafood market in the mission district. the catch is that it's not local crab. it was brought in from farther north near the canada border, where we're getting crab from washington. >> and we're selling very well. a lot of people like eating crab instead of turkey, sometimes for thanksgiving. >> the northern crab is selling for $10.99 a pound and local crab usually sells for $7.99. that is if it is available, perhaps season between mendocino and the mexican border was delayed to protect humpback whales and because of poor meat quality. all right. time now to

get a check of the weather. we have sandhya patel standing by. and lots to be thankful for this year. absolutely diane, and especially our weather. >> it has been fantastic today for thanksgiving. hope you're all enjoying your time with loved ones. let me show you some live pictures from our tower cameras and you will notice that it is absolutely clear outside, no matter which camera you're looking at at pier 39, standing out at temperatures today, a good 5 to 10 degrees above average. wall to wall sunshine, 73 in santa rosa and napa got up to 72. in concord, 73 degrees in san jose. hard to believe we're just a few weeks away from winter, 70 in oakland, 67 degrees in san francisco. so and speaking of winter, as i take you back in time, there was a cold front that came through and brought a few snow showers to the sierra nevada. as we expected. right behind it, though, quick clearing and we are going to notice that the winds begin to ramp up. so this trough is going to deepen over

the great basin. high pressure nudging in. we're caught in between the two. and those northerly winds will really crank later on tonight in the in the hills and around solano county going into tomorrow morning. right now, not too bad. mount diablo, right now at 20 miles an hour. so we go hour by hour and those winds around 6:00 getting gustier, picking up at 9:00 pm about 40 miles an hour, 44 as we head towards the wee hours of the morning. so you might hear the wind ruffling the leaves on the trees and stuff later on tonight. and then early tomorrow morning, still gusty at 5 a.m. along the coastline. it'll get breezy as well. and those winds will continue into about 9:00 in the morning before they let up later on in the afternoon. that wind advisory remains up for solano county until 1 p.m. tomorrow. gust of 45 miles an hour a few power outages not out of the question. and certainly the possibility of tree limbs going down. i'm going to step aside. we do have a frost advisory for parts of the mendocino coastline tomorrow morning as you will notice here, a freeze warning going up for
