been tracking the developments out of the middle east for us all night long and joins us live from the newsroom with the very latest. tim. yeah >> dion now it's important to note that as of now, officials aren't releasing the names of the hostages who are set to be let go sometime over the next few hours. however, we do know that all 50 of them aren't going to be set free at the same time. instead, they'll be let go in batches over the course of this cease fire for the past seven weeks, john poland and rachel goldberg have been relentlessly trying to get any information they can about their son, hirsh, back on october 7th. hirsh who is a berkeley native, was attending an israeli music festival near the gaza border when hamas militants launched their attack. hirsh along with around 250 others, was taken hostage. >> forget the details. like where is he? what's he eating? who's he with? that would all be nice, but don't expect to know that we just want to know. proof of life. we want to know if he's alive. >> with news that a temporary cease fire, along with the release of some of those

hostages, has been agreed to, hersh's parents say they're keeping hope alive. they're one of several american families, including at least two others from the bay area whose relatives have been taken many of us jewish community members that are that are celebrating thanksgiving this evening are going to have an empty chair at our tables in recognition symbolically, of those, including americans, that were taken hostage that won't be able to go home to thanksgiving. tyler gregory is the ceo of the bay area chapter of the jewish community relations council. he tells abc7 news since the war started, the local jewish community has been thrown into dual crises. one dealing with the hostages and the other with rising hate. we're seeing, you know, in our schools, our universities, in the public square, you know, anti-semitic chants and swastikas and things like that. >> and it's certainly adding to the tension that is happening overseas. >> according to the anti-defamation league, anti semitic incidents have risen almost 400% in recent weeks. despite those figures, gregory says the community remains

power outages, 24 hour forecast. we'll call for sunshine. gusty winds and really a cooler afternoon, even though the sun will be out. i'll be back with a full look at your holiday weekend forecast coming right up . dion. all right. >> sounds good. sandhya, thanks. new at 11 now. police are investigating after a van seeming crashed into a cold store in pleasant hill. this is video shared on social media. the incident was initially reported as a burglary, but officers have not confirmed if anything was taken. coles is scheduled to open at 5 a.m. tomorrow for black friday, but it is unclear if that's still possible. all law enforcement agencies across the country are preparing for retail theft as we near the gift giving holidays. police in san francisco are quadrupling the number of officers on duty in shopping areas, especially union square. that was one of the few things i noticed when i was driving around looking for parking is i saw a security person, at least two on every corner. >> there's a bunch of officers, there's a lot of security.

>> every boutique, every shop that i've walked into has security in front of it. and it seems very, very safe. >> the california highway patrol is conducting raids and recovered more than $350,000 worth of goods in the oakland area. the chp commissioner says $260 million in grants from governor newsom's administration has been a big help to boost patrols and identify thieves. well, now that the holiday season has begun, mothers against drunk driving is asking drivers to make a pledge. the pledge is basically that they won't drive impaired during the holidays. >> that they'll be there for someone who is impaired to be the designated driver for and that they'll be a good party host. >> it's an important pledge given that a quarter of adults say they drink more during the holiday season. on thanksgiving ranks third among us holidays with the most drunk driving deaths. a study found 43% of accidents on new year's are alcohol related. you can make that pledge at the madd website at in the north bay today, 160

thanksgiving meals were delivered to homebound seniors in marin county. they were prepared by vivian, which provides services for seniors and those with disabilities. while in the east bay oakland has added its own twist on the traditional thanksgiving dinner. the event was originally set up to feed the homeless, but 21 years later, it's now turned into a community block party that reflects the diversity of the town. former oakland mayor jean quan was volunteering. >> nobody has a thanksgiving dinner like this. this is like eating at my house. you've got mexican rice, you have chinese rice. you have some of the best collards and macaroni and cheese made by the seniors who live over there. >> all sounds delicious for farouk allowed the owner of two star market in oakland. it's an annual tradition. the yemeni immigrant spends up to $15,000 to host the event with another 5000 coming from local businesses as.

sounds so good at glide. in san francisco, thanksgiving came with some grooves. the nonprofit offered a musical service before handing out 2400 meals. it is glide's first indoor thanksgiving meal since before the pandemic. now, like us here at abc7, many people are working this thanksgiving. some are first responders missing out on family time to help others. abc seven news reporter luz pena surprised many of them to say thank you on a day where it's all about gratitude. >> we went on a mission to spread just that. we just got some flowers to say thank you to many who don't typically hear those words. can't wait to give them out in san francisco, chinatown, we spotted a beloved paramedic who come this way. q is part of the team that was giving out food for seniors today. >> we just finished his route. it's 13 mills and then we got a second route for a total of 15

that's according to the national retail federation. in total, shoppers could spend $966 billion more than ever before, 182 million people are planning to shop between now and cyber monday. that is also a record. black friday is the most popular shopping day, followed by cyber monday and with so many deals online now, we aren't seeing lines of shoppers on thanksgiving night like years past, ready for doorbuster sales. so how will stores fare this shopping season? abc7 news reporter j.r stone was in colma tonight talking with some possible shoppers as empty target parking lots on thanksgiving. >> but don't let that fool you. >> i'm very interested in black friday. >> look inside that closed target store and you can see the 30% off black friday deals are

we've seen people lined up outside of black friday locations like best buy the night before for not the case this year. but we do see these fences lined up here for crowd control. >> come friday, we're going to skip it. this year. >> i actually got in better deals online. then black friday at gamestop. >> they will have deals of up to 40 and 50% off. but some say that won't even get them to think about maybe buying unless it's really good. >> like 70% off or something like that. >> we didn't come across any 70% off black friday deals being advertised. but at one location we saw what is said to be an unreal deal. and hey, to somebody, one of these deals may be just that. j.r. stone, abc seven news in the south bay this thanksgiving holiday was all about coming together. >> some people were working, some traveling and others sitting down for a meal. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez tells their stories,

helping get us in the spirit of the season on one of the biggest holidays of the year. >> those clocking in on thanksgiving are grateful to be with their work family. >> it's been fantastic and i couldn't choose a better family to spend it with. >> andrew kohler is a bartender for one of san jose's newest restaurant downtown, where latte ristorante. on thursday, they provided a traditional meal or an italian one. i know a lot of restaurants decide to close, but personally i've always enjoyed working the holidays. >> it's really enriching day. and like i said before, everyone that's here has been incredibly appreciative because that time is so limited. no cooking or clean up for this family from southern california traveling for hockey. >> oh, absolutely. >> i don't cook anyway, so it was great. >> across the street from the restaurant, families took the opportunity to take pictures under the glittering musical tunnel called the sonic runway. a short drive away families were enjoying the christmas in the park displays. it officially opens on friday, where families can stroll through the 400 decorated trees. speaking of

which, staff at tree lots we visited said they're bracing for the rush of families on friday, whether it's enjoying a hot chocolate skating or just walking around with loved ones. people we heard from said there's a lot to be thankful for. >> family, new beginnings, old traditions that i'm still surviving. i'm still alive. god gave me another day and keep going forward. >> in san jose, lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> all right. the turkey has been eaten. so now it is time to think about the next holiday. these families were doing just that at this evening's clancy's christmas trees in san francisco. thanks giving weekend is one of the busiest for buying natural christmas trees and speaking of the bay area favorite was among the sights at today's macy's thanksgiving parade in new york city. the 57 member troop of tap-dancing christmas trees from alameda spread holiday cheer along the entire parade route, one kick at a time. this was their sixth

and breezy at noontime plenty of sun at 4 p.m. we're looking at 50s, 60s and clear and breezy in the evening hours. today's high temperature is 5 to 10 degrees above average. warmest spots were in the low 70s, 72. concord, 70. oakland 73, san jose and santa rosa got up to 67 in the city right now, the numbers are not dropping a whole lot because even though we have clear skies, we've got those gusty winds. so temperatures are in the 40s to 60s. believe it or not. the winds are stronger in the hills. but even at the lower elevations, they're picking up 22 to 23 miles an hour. napa fairfield, calistoga, right now, 27 mile an hour winds. they continue to increase during the overnight and morning hours. so tomorrow morning at 6:00, if you are going to be out and about, winds will be gusting 30 to 45 miles an hour at 8 a.m. still gusty around parts of the bay area. it's not everywhere. and then as we head towards 3:00 in the afternoon, an winds begin to subside. but it's a northerly wind that is a very drying wind. it's going to bring in a cooler
