victims of sex crimes alleged to have happened outside the statute of limitations. it gives them an opportunity to have their cases heard. among those thousands, hospital patients, spa customers, incarcerated people, and some very famous celebrities. it was a stunning lawsuit against hip-hop artist sean "diddy" combs triggering headlines earlier their month. >> the allegations against sean did my di combs accused of sexual assault. >> his former girlfriend r&b singer cassie and inning $30 million over allegations over rape, abuse, even sex trafficking. >> when the headlines came out about diddy, just the amount of information and detail an allegations were jaw-dropping to say the least. >> cassie! >> juju: but it was just one of an avalanche of lawsuit, many hitting high profile men, thanks to new york state's groundbreaking sexual assault statute. combs settling out of court the very next day.

his legal team later saying in a statement to abc news, "mr. combs' decision to settle the lawsuit does not in any way undermine his flat-out denial of the claims. he is happy they got to a mite yul settlement and wishes ms. ventura the best." >> this is not an admission of guilt. this could just be the cost of doing business, that he wants to settle and move on even though these allegations are false. or they're true. and he doesn't want to go through the discovery process. and so it's better to settle and move on than to go through the loss not only financially, but also in the court of public opinion. >> juju: and as the deadline for new york survivors law was set to expire, two other women suing combs. others suing actor jamie foxx. guns n' roses front man axl rose, former new york governor andrew cuomo, and current city mayor eric adams. all accused of sexual abuse from incidents years prior. >> it's absolutely not true.

you know, i would never do anything to harm anyone. >> juju: all the men denies the allegations against them in statements. those new claims of old offenses only made possible by the new york adult survivors act, signed by governor kathy hochul last year, which expired at midnight november 23rd, thanksgiving. >> what governor hochul in new york state did is say you know what? just for a year, this will be the middle ground so to speak allow these claims to come forward without opening the barn door to allow all claims to come in forever. >> juju: the adult survivors act opened a one-year window for victims of sexual abuse to file lawsuits in civil court against their accusers, regardless of when the alleged crimes took place. >> survivors have one year to take action. >> it doesn't matter if it was your coach. >> your cabdriver. >> your doctor. >> juju: but the law had further reach, bringing forth thousands of claims of abuse exposing

systemic malaise across society, from spas to airports to hospitals. even prisons. >> there are many people who are afraid to bring sexual harassment claims against their harassers because the power dynamic that existed. >> juju: civil rights attorney ben crump's legal team claiming it made more than 17 h00 filing against new york prisons. >> it is such an ordeal for them to finally come forward because they are so distrustful of the system. they think that they have no voice. they have no power. >> reporter: crump represents mia wheeler, one of those alleged victims. i spoke with her last year. >> it is hard to make a positive turnaround when you are being subjected to sexual abuse. it plays on your mental. it takes your focus off of everything. >> juju: wheeler says she was in her 20s when she was sexually assaulted repeatedly by a prison

guard in new york's bedford hills correctional facility. >> when he would walk past my cube, if nobody was there and it was meal time, he would come in and peek in and say hey, you know what time it is. >> juju: what did he mean by that? >> that it was time to have sex, or time for me to perform a sex act on him. >> juju: tell me about how this affected you. >> physically repulsed and turned off, but during the acts, just having to tune out. i just wanted it to be over. the only thing i knew is that as long as i come home, i can bury it. get out of prison, get off of parole, and go on with your life. that's it. >> juju: now almost 20 years after leaving prison, wheeler is waiting to have her day in court. wheeler is among at least 900 formerly incarcerated people who came forward saying they were allegedly sexually abused in state prisons.

>> see, see, you never really know the anger that up, that feeling of not being in control, the feeling of feeling less than, holding a dark secret and not being able to tell anybody. it's ruined my life. >> juju: u.s. federal law and nearly all states, including new york criminalize any sexual relations between staff and inmates. in a statement to abc news, the new york department of corrections and community supervision refused to comment on possible or pending litigation, but said in part doccs has zero tolerance for sexual abuse, sexual harassment and unauthorized relationships. the department thoroughly investigates all reports of sexual victimization, including unauthorized relationships and retaliation against individuals who report incidents or cooperate with those investigations. wheeler is asking for $20

million in damages for the pain and suffering, injuries and expenses she sustained as a result of the alleged abuses. new york state requires a monetary claim future all damages. but beyond financial compensation, wheeler says that sharing her story has been part of her path to healing. >> i could not continue to be a complete woman, a broken person, a hurt soul because hurt people hurt people. >> juju: at least 3700 lawsuits were filed in the year the new york adult survivors act was active. there are calls for the law to be extended, or made permanent. but that requires new legislation from the state chamber. >> hopefully, this law has taught society a lesson. any time we can give victims a voice, it is a good thing for society. but we feel that there are thousands that were left behind.

. we turn now to the middle east. tonight in gaza, those 11 israeli hostages walk by hamas gunmen to red cross vans and then freedom. after 51 days in captivity, as both sides agree to extend the ceasefire by two more days. at least 69 hostages freed thus far by hamas in return for israel releasing 150 palestinian prisoners. that deal also letting roughly 800 aid trucks into gaza over the last four days. here is abc's matt gutman. >> tonight in gaza, there is 11 hostages walked by hamas gunmen to red cross vans and the freedom after 51 days in captivity as israel and hamas agree to extend the ceasefire by two more days. among those released tonight, two women and nine children received by an israeli special ops unit, ferrying them into israel, but no americans among them. the white house saying up to nine americans still being held captive. only one released so far,

isn't playing an entrepreneur. she actually is one, teaming up with her childhood best friends anne hone and marine north. >> basically, you're in the pandemic. >> and we keep trying to come up with ideas of things we could do together while we weren't working and while the world was shut down. and anne was building these play houses out of refrigerator boxes and it kind of clicked that we needed to build them in some way. >> reporter: three months with six kids between them, it was a light bulb moment, and their company make it cute, which produces ecofriendly recyclable play houses that can be assembled in 60 seconds or less was born. >> i think this is seriously more powerful than like my acting career, because a couple of my friends and i had a vision, and then we built it. >> reporter: the old friends spent two years researching and developing their idea, reliving childhood memories while creating their first prototypes. >> i met anne and maureen in

kindergarten. we went through every school, every class together up until we graduated, stayed close. we were all pregnant with our first kids at the same time, which is magical, because you feel like you have this built-in support system. i'm recognized in the world as an actor and this person, but they know me, and they've known me from jump. and there is a this n that. >> you've got to tell me, what tess funniest story about amanda when you were all kids? >> oh, gosh. >> she was always the outgoing one. >> yeah. and wouldn't be embarrassed to do things that maureen and i would often be embarrassed to do. i think the twister video. we had to do a science video, and we were doing it on the weather. >> tornado season. >> and amanda dressed in tin foil and spun around pretending to be a tornado. and it just so happened that her crush ran by. >> and i'm trying to alert everybody that the boys are there, and i'm so embarrassed. i'm twisting around with tin

foil. out of context, really bizarre. but we made it quickly, and i think we got an a on that. >> reporter: but it wasn't just their sister-like bond that made it all work. each brought a different skill to the table. anne with a background in business is the ceo. maureen a physician's assistant is the coo. >> each of us had a reason to want to kind of come together and build something that was so out of our comfort zones. it ran really well. >> if you ever disagree, how do you decide between the three of you? >> we really haven't had too many disagreements. and any disagreements so far have been to v-1. >> it took me this i don't think. 2 v 1. >> that's the reason she is the ceo. >> reporter: and for amanda -- >> there might be people out there who say oh, amanda, she is a celebrity. is she really a business person? is she really building this thing? >> absolutely. >> yeah, she's been incredibly

involved. and she always brings something else to the table that maureen or i don't have. i mean, she is this great visionary where sometimes her ideas i'm like i don't know that we can do that. and then i sit back and i think about it, and i'm like that's an amazing idea. >> she's been on the floor, the manufacturing floor with us. >> you're not just putting your name on it. you're heavily involved. >> reporter: from hosting pop-up events and teaming up with brands like many moons, the sustainable clothing store in nantucket. >> that's the modern farmhouse. >> we have all the same values. so it's good when you're a new company to kind of merge with other companies that have the same mind-set and sustainability is top of our list. >> reporter: to doubling down on make it cute sustainability mission, partnering with nonprofits like earth day network, cleaning up beaches. and planting a tree for every
