the investigation was ongoing and today they made an arrest oh my god. >> just a few months ago, this church, iglesia pentecostal movement de gloria in richmond, a attracted 150 people or more for services alone. >> laura then allegations of sexual abuse started surfacing against the pastor, 53 year old victor manuel hernandez. and now the church is lucky to draw a dozen people on a sunday until a month ago, pablo cifuentes was a senior official at the church, an elder. that's him getting a hug from the pastor. >> he said that i was his friend. he said that i was his right hand man. but when i found out, he made me so, so angry. >> his 21 year old daughter, karen, just recently told her parents when she was 13. the pastor convinced her it was god's will that they have sex. >> me cerca de la escuela. >> he took me to a hotel near

the school, and at that moment i told him that i didn't feel safe. i didn't feel good and that we shouldn't do it. but he made me do it. >> karen tells me she resisted because of their age difference, because he was married, because he was her pastor. but she says the sexual abuse occurred five times over a span of three years. >> he changed my life totally. mentally, i was dead. it killed me. i did not think the same. my grades went down. i was angry with my parents at home. i acted out. i could not tell my parents anything and i was always angry when she finally told her parents two months ago, they were devastated. i couldn't believe it. it was difficult. my daughter was very small. i thought it was my fault for confiding in him. we went to that church searching for love, searching for help, and we found it. but in the end, we were damaged. >> they left the church a month ago and say they will never return. >> when i found out from my daughter's lips what had happened to her, i felt like grabbing him and making him disappear. but i also understood that doing it with my own hands

would get me into trouble. >> and so pablo cifuentes called the police and filed a report. he says he didn't hear back, so he contacted the i-team through a friend, cifuentes says as church elder, he heard complaints about the pastor from others, including jocelyn alvarez. >> it happened like 24 days ago. >> oh, just in the past month, yeah. jocelyn and her mother tell me pastor hernandez requested a private meeting with the 16 year old in a room upstairs in the church. >> he hugged me, like, very tight. >> like he didn't, like, want to let me go and then he started, like, touching my your thigh? yeah, my thigh. and then after that, he got my hand and put it in his thigh. jocelyn says the pastor tried to kiss her, but she felt uncomfortable and left. i just didn't know what to think because, like, he's a pastor. like, why would he do that to me? >> her mother feels strongly enough that she too has quit the church. >> it worried me a lot because i felt that something worse was going to happen to her. i got

angry. i got very upset because he is a pastor. that's not right. what he did, i called and texted pastor hernandez, and when he didn't respond, i met him as he arrived for the 10 a.m. service. >> this past sunday. >> victor, i'm dan noyes from channel seven. i need to talk to you. would you do an interview with me, please? about what? i'd like to talk to you about the accused actions that young girls and young women are making against you of sexual abuse. will you talk to me, please? >> the pastor didn't say a word. just made that gesture when i mentioned complaints of sexual abuse. his adult daughter and son pushed me out of the way and blocked my camera as he pulled up the window. >> this is a public place, victor. >> i also wanted to ask about that fancy car, the bmw m5 with competition package that he bought new two years ago for more than $110,000. while he encourages his congregation of central american immigrants to tithe to give 10% of their

income to the church. and i wanted to ask about his assault rifle he photographed karen cifuentes holding it during the time she says he was sexually abusing her. what i want for him is to go to jail. >> i don't feel safe. he could harm me because i'm asking for help and he could find out and harm me. what he did was wrong. it's not right. and i want the police to act. >> richmond police arrested pastor hernandez this afternoon. i was there as he arrived to be booked. he faces four counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child under the age of 14 and three counts of kidnaping. karen tells me the pastor would pose as a family member, take her out of school and go to a hotel. investigators say they moved to arrest hernandez today because he may have become aware of the police investigation. >> when that happens, we feel it's important to get them into custody, know whether it be to prevent them from fleeing, whether it be to protect the victim. um, all of those are factors in which it would cause us to accelerate our investigation and take them into custody. >> hernandez is being held on $7

morning. you will notice a widespread showers are not expected, but it's going to be scattered in nature as we head towards about 10 a.m. be prepared for the slippery roadways. it's a light level. one storm, scattered showers, breezy conditions, areas of low visibility. now right now, the winds are beginning to pick up over the hills. mount diablo, 26 miles an hour. i'll be back with the rest of the timeline to let you know if the rain is going to continue into sunday. ama. all right. >> we'll check back with you. thank you, sandhya. developing news tonight in the ongoing war between israel and hamas. the war is back on after a seven day cease fire came to an end with israeli forces resuming its airstrikes on gaza. 110 israeli hostages were freed during the week long pause in fighting in exchange for 240 palestinian held in israeli jails. however a new report from the new york times reveals the israeli military had obtained intel evidence outlining hamas exact plan of attack last year. the times claims israeli

intelligence dismissed the plans purely as aspirational. >> the fact that they did it to the t shows that it was actually very good intelligence. but the fact that they didn't act on it is very troubling. >> the israeli military has refused to comment on the new york times article. >> new at 11, a group of teachers in oakland is planning a so-called palestine teach in day for next wednesday. the teachers say it's a way to elevate palestinian voices in public education amid the ongoing conflict in the middle east. but as abc seven news reporter tim johns explains, they're already receiving pushback from the school district and local jewish organizations as the war between israel and hamas continue. >> news so, too does the battle in school districts around the bay area. on wednesday, a group of teachers in oakland are planning what they call a palestine teaching. >> it's just a group of teachers and parents who have gotten together and are planning to lead lessons. lead activities that really center palestinian

stories and experiences. >> jacob, who asked us not to use his last name, is one of the ousd teachers participate rating. he tells abc seven news. the curriculum the teachers plan on using comes from a variety of sources and is designed for different age groups. that includes an alphabet book on youtube for tk through third graders called p is for palestine on the video makes reference to intifada an arabic word that means rebellion and has been historically connected to armed uprisings by palestinians. >> the quote from that page says intifada is standing up for yourself or standing up for what is right, which i think is very age, like an age appropriate way to interact with that with that term. >> the oakland unified school district has come out against the teaching. in a statement, they tell abc7 news, quote, the district is aware that some educators want to teach their students about the situation in gaza and israel with a very specific view of who is at fault and why. it is the job of educators to teach students how to think critically, not to

teach them what to think. we are reminding all educators of their response ability to adhere to principles of education and to keep their personal beliefs out of the classroom. those in support of the teaching reject that statement. the pushback isn't just coming from some local jewish organizations. also think it's inappropriate. that includes tyler gregory, the ceo of the local chapter of the jewish community relations council. >> i think that this curriculum incites violence against jews and israelis and has no place in any school district. >> gregory says his organization has heard from several jewish families in the district, some of whom plan on keeping their students home from classes on wednesday. he believes at a time of heightened tensions, the teach in will only further divide the community. >> we're confident that the administration is going to have consequences for those that participate in this. the teachers, because it's totally unacceptable. >> all in oakland. tim johns, abc7 news. now one more note here. >> the group behind the teach in

makes it very clear they are vehemently against anti-semitism, but they feel this is important. education >> ian tonight people are remembering sandra day o'connor, the first woman to serve as a justice on the supreme court. she passed away today at the age of 93. what you may not know about is her connection to the bay area, including her time at stanford. here's abc7 news. south bay reporter loren martinez. >> sandra day o'connor is being remembered for her grit and inspiring legacy. o'connor's exceptionalism was evident as one of the few women admitted at stanford university in the 1950s. >> i think people, especially women at stanford, really felt like she had blazed a trail that people wanted to follow in. >> stanford law professor bernadette meyler said o'connor's years at the university were significant. it was there. o'connor met her classmate and future supreme court chief justice william rehnquist, but she also met her husband. >> she had been an important member of the law review when

she was at stanford. and she also met her husband famously through the law review, through late night editing, i guess after law school, o'connor had trouble finding a firm that would hire a woman. >> her first job was as a law clerk with then san mateo county district attorney keith sorensen in my office of 66 prosecutors, 42 are women and 24 are men. >> and every one of them knows that it was sandra day who punched the hole in that ceiling and made it where, you know what? we just to be a good prosecutor, you just need to be a good lawyer. >> o'connor ended up working for state government and eventually made her way to the high court in 1981. she made history as the nation's first woman to sit on the supreme court. >> she was a justice of very great integrity and also practical sense. >> on october 5th, 1981, o'connor's first day as a justice on the supreme court, five students from stanford proclaimed a day of celebration at the law school. o'connor said it was one of the most touching

tributes she had received. >> she brought a somewhat different perspective, not only by being a former legislator, but also by coming from a different area geographically. she just had a lot of perseverance and a lot of sticktoitiveness and approach things with a very positive and welcoming attitude as well in the south bay. >> loren martinez, abc seven news police in los angeles are trying to track down a killer they believe is responsible for shooting three homeless people to death this week. >> this grainy photo was released of the lone suspect in the hope of turning up any information from the public. they say each victim was alone in an alley, maybe a sidewalk, when they were killed in the early hours of the morning. la mayor karen bass is encouraging the homeless to stick together in groups for the time being. >> it is the last of the first fridays for a while y organizers are pausing the oakland event and san francisco is glowing. >> tonight, how the city is

several buildings are all lit up with unique artistic designs as part of the effort to draw people to the downtown area. abc seven news reporter tara campbell was there as they flipped the switch for on our let's glow sf. five for a run. >> and just like that san francisco's ferry building lit up friday kicking off lets glow sf the holiday projection event is now in its third year. bill does the largest of its kind in

the country. >> we are one of the most beautiful, creative, innovative, incredible cities anywhere in the world. >> high tech projectors and lasers are casting large scale art across the facade of six of the city's iconic buildings, bringing together more than a dozen artists from across the us and around the world. we wanted to come see all the fun lights. >> we grew up in oakland and we certainly haven't seen the event quite at this level. so excited to see it all begin lit up. >> she sent me the link, so i'm here because she sent me the link. the ten day event is designed to drive business back to the downtown. >> three years ago, during the pandemic, we were thinking of an idea to activate it downtown with some sort of art and light. >> the downtown sf partnership says last year's event drew in more than 51,000 people and created a $3 billion impact. it not only light up the buildings of san francisco, but it puts such a big smiles on the faces of the over 3 million people who have visited the downtown in years past to support let's glow

sf we saw signs for this and decided to show up. this mother and daughter duo are visiting from tacoma, washington, and it just sounded like some christmas fun. >> so thought why not at least go check it out? go see what it's all about. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> how fun. >> well, tonight was the last first friday in oakland before it goes on a long hiatus because of money problems. this holiday themed event was called frosty friday and included santa's photo ops and gift shopping. first fridays is a beloved community event that began back in 2013. organizers are seeking new funding and asking for donations to keep it going. they hope to restart it in april of next year. we'll keep track of it. santa clara county's public health department marked the 35th annual world aids day with a vigil at the aids commemorative grove in san jose's guadalupe river park. the day brings attention to those living with hiv and aids and honors the nearly 36 million

people who've died from this terrible illness. san francisco also commemorated world aids day, of course, inside the national aids memorial in golden gate park. more than 3000 names of people who lost their lives to aids are honored at the memorial. olympic gold medalist diver greg louganis, who was diagnosed with hiv in 1988, was there to share his journey as a survivor. officials say while great strides are being made against hiv and aids, some 35,000 people become infected in the united states each year. so it is still very much an issue. >> it is. well, here at abc seven, we are working to build a better bay area. and coming up sunday night on abc seven news at 11, we're going to have a look at public safety in this city and whether perception aligns with reality. >> our in-depth coverage culminates monday with take action san francisco. it's a town hall event where we will talk with san francisco's mayor, police chief and district attorney, and it will be hosted by abc seven's reggie aqui lyanne melendez and phil matier. >> you can watch it live on

monday, streaming at 7 p.m. should be a really informative discussion. >> please tune in to that. but for the moment, let's turn to our attention to the weekend weather forecast. >> yeah, if you're making plans. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel has a timing of the rain. sandhya. >> yeah, that's right. and we have just isolated showers tonight but that's going to change come tomorrow. so ama and dan let's take a look at live doppler seven multi day say stormy weather across the pacific northwest is expected. they've already been seeing the stormy weather as an atmospheric river is headed in their direction and this is going to amount to 5 to 10in of rain in a week for the coastal ranges. and we're talking about several feet of snow. this is taking you through about friday night next week. look at portland, over seven inches of rain, even eureka getting in on the action. close to five inches of rain expected. we do have a little bit of rain right now on live doppler seven, but it's spotty right around half moon bay as we widen the picture here, certainly a lot of cloud cover in some fog overhead. so be

careful. the visibility is running low one mile right now in santa rosa, just over two miles in half moon bay and two miles exactly in napa. your temperatures in the 40s and the 50s, not terribly cold as we look at a live picture from zephyr cove. it's certainly breezy up there. there have been a few snowflakes coming down. light snow fell over the last 24 hours and we still are seeing the flurries right now in the sierra. there expecting a couple more inches as we head towards sunday, four inches at donner and kirkwood. here's a lovely view from our exploratorium camera back here at home, embarcadero center, all lit up for the holidays, isolated showers and areas of fog tonight scattered showers tomorrow milder next week with chances of rain coming. our way on our storm impact scale. this is a light level one for tomorrow. those scattered showers will create those slippery roads. so watch out areas of low visibility and certainly breezy at times as we time this out for you, 7:00 tomorrow morning, you're seeing some widespread rain across the region scattered in nature at 9 a.m. and then

really some showers will linger into the early afternoon. but by evening, the showers move north ward and it'll be mainly into the north bay as we head into sunday morning. some north bay showers may continue, but for the rest of you, it's just a mix of clouds and some sun. now, rainfall estimates through tomorrow night. most of you in under a quarter inch category. but ben loman picking up about a third of an inch. your morning temperatures will be in the 40s and 50s. make sure you have your umbrellas and it's not a washout for the weekend, but you certainly will need them from time to time tomorrow, tomorrow afternoon. we're looking at highs in the 50s and the 60s with the rain line shifting northward. accuweather seven day forecast. it's one on our storm impact scale for your saturday your sunday for most of you will be dry just that chance of a shower or two lingering in the north bay and then look at those temperatures going up i mean well above average today is the start of meteorological winter, but it's not going to feel like that as we head towards next week. it's going to be more like spring with 60s and 70s showing
