8:30 pm
fiske, and oh, has he had a night! >> jesse: it is the same stunt and gain that we have seen up front that florida state has been using time and time again. jared verse is going to get the pick. fiske is going to loop around to the outside, and louisville's offensive line, they can't handle it passing it off, and two linemen run into each other, and it is fisk and verse and taylor and lovett. this is the best d-line in the acc and what a luxury it is when you can get home with just four guys. jordan travis, he sees nit practice, and he knows about it, and mike norvell is loving it. >> joe: and brohm knows it. and brohm's offense suffering five sacks and 12tfls. they will go wildcat to put this thing away.
8:31 pm
benson just probing that right side before he is driven back, and three time-outs remain for louisville. >> jesse: i won't lie, but if i were mike norvell, i would think about scoring a touchdown here, because i think that style points are important. >> joe: i think they are. >> jesse: most coaches would say, bleed the clock and win the game, and this is the important thing, but that is true, but considering what we have seen yesterday and today, and if i were him, i would try to put more points up on the board. >> joe: the time-out used by louisville. well, let's continue the conversation jesse, because if you are considering the style points and language used, and talk about the style of texas and alabama today, because texas offensively was a stylistic as you could have, and alabama had as much drama and played at the highest championship level that you could show in the sport that you could win over georgia as
8:32 pm
you could have. >> jesse: and the teams and the coaches with the argument that you could put texas or alabama over the neutral field, and who would win that game, and that is what they will say. of course, you will think back to the last time that you saw a third-string quarterback -- >> referee: false start, offense, 48. five-yard penalty, second down. >> jesse: -- in a conference game, and you think of cardale jones, and they had a loss, but they beat wisconsin 59-0, and the committee could not ignore that and think put them in and the rest is history and they of course won a national championship. but the question again, comes down how much do zero losses matter for the committee, because it is amazing that florida state did that, and if they win tonight against a top 15 team with the third-string quarterback it is, a big deal. >> joe: it is second and 14 and just a yard there, and louisville with two time-outs there, and pure year with the
8:33 pm
tac -- puryear with the tackle. and so, you brought it up, and we will take you to 2014 when ohio state saw jones lead them to the championship, and j.t. carrier was injured in the night before, and the selection committee had to look at how the seed it, and then the night before, they blast wisconsin. >> jesse: yes, he was hurt in august and then cardale jones came n and could they beat alabama in the semifinal and take on oregon and marcus mariota, and cardale jones got better and better, and that 59-0 win left a resounding win in the eyes of the committee. >> joe: now you saw tate rodemaker, and you understand that concussion protocol for tate rodemaker, and whatever happen, he is going to be the quarterback and it is not brock glenn who you see tonight.
8:34 pm
this is another wildcat snap to benson on third and 13. and the last time-out is going to be used by louisville, and so an opportunity of course for fitzgerald, but we talked about this earlier in terms of how you go about assessing things, and do you punish a team because of the star player being out? do you punish a team because of the lack of offense that you are seeing, and how you approach that, and the selection committee has been watching a lot of football now for the last 28 hours. >> jesse: yeah, and no doubt they are. and one thing that they will consider is what you just said, well, if rodemaker is the quarterback in the semifinal how good is this offense with him. and so they will go back to look at north alabama and florida, and the offense was, you know, it was good at times, and they also struggled a lot times, too. so there is a lot for this committee to have to take into account no doubt. from the resume standpoint, florida state is there, and with the x-factors with the injuries
8:35 pm
and overcoming it, is a big feather in their cap. >> jesse: the resume has three win, and lsu and clemson and the louisville team as fitzgerald is coming on the field to push it past the touchdown margin to the 10-point game, and 40-yard attempt for ryan fitzgerald. he is 2 of 3 tonight. and he just squeezes it inside of the upright. so, the 40-yarder is good, and that is going to make it 16-6. what a path for the noles with mike norvell's fourth season. you can see the quarterbacks, the injured quarterbacks celebrating in the margins with the rain intensifying here. mike norvell, and we talked about the path, and remember just a couple of years ago, the tough start to the season, and
8:36 pm
the loss to jacksonville state. the loss to jacksonville state. >> jesse: and he was on the hot seat, and so many people in tallahassee, and he kept staying course, and kept thinking that if he could get some guys from the portal, and things would turn, and it did, and they grew up, and found ways to win games and doing the things necessary, and you win 10, and them take it the next step in the progression this year, and winning tonight, 13-0, is remarkable, and you can see what he has been able to do in the last couple of seasons. >> jes . >> joe: they will have the conference championship unless something wacky happens and the strength of schedule. texas and bama of course, they were spectacular today. the task for the college football playoff selection committee, do you go against what has been the 10-year
8:37 pm
history where every undefeated power 5 conference champion has gotten in or do you just clean the slate this week, and say, who are the four best teams? who are the four best teams? last year, that format that we are dealing with four teams, and this selection committee under these circumstances. plummer again, and guess who? jared verse. >> jesse: last week against florida he took damian george, the tackle, and he walked him into the quarterback. he does it again right here. like, you should not be able to do this to a 320-pound human being, but he does. he does it every week. >> joe: that is sick. >> jesse: that is a misdemeanor in some states. >> joe: that is going to be on the film when they call his at the draft. speed to power. >> jesse: and they are trying to
8:38 pm
create the transition, and he gets the hands inside, and coming back for the extra year was massive for him for the draft stock and potentially the national championship chase. >> joe: third and three, and thrash could not hold on to it. renardo green has been outstanding. >> jesse: this is a playoff caliber defense. it is no question. >> joe: and as much as we have panned, and we have talked about and sat back and watched all of the punts and the lacks of third downs to come through, this defense has been the other end of the spectrum. they have been that good. they are superb defensively. fourth down and three. plummer, and fiske is chasing him, and fiske gets to him. the 300-pounder just closed down
8:39 pm
on jack plummer. >> jesse: the seventh sack for florida state's defense. fiske is pointing to the ring. the acc championship is locked up. this defense has completely dominated. >> jesse: he was playing at western michigan and said he was happy to get a breakfast. >> jesse: yes, future breakfasts will have shaved black truffle, because he can afford it. and now, what will the florida state defense do to michigan or texas or alabama or could they keep them in the game? >> joe: well, you have to generate some points, but this defense is at elite college championship level. they are in victory formation. just find a way for what florida
8:40 pm
state has done down the stretch of the season, and they have gotten through the championship game with the protocol that rodemaker was in and they had to turn to brock glenn, the true freshman. they said, we will find a way. >> jesse: these are the plays that he has been dreaming of calling. victory formation in the acc championship game to finish the season undefeated. >> joe: mike norvell's fourth year at florida state. start celebrating, and the undefeated season, and acc championship, and finish for 13 they did, number 13, jordan travis.
8:41 pm
brock glenn had eight completion, and only passed for 55 yards, but he was able to lean on toafili and benson and the defense that brought everything they had to. the noles are the acc champs. their fifth acc championship in school history. their first since 2014. katie? >> katie: thanks, tess.
8:42 pm
sharing a moment with his family. coach norvell, time and time again, your team finds ways to win. they gut it out, why? >> because they are a team. they care about each other. these guys work 365 days a year to prepare for these moments, the heart and the determination and the grit they have within, and this is a football team full of heart and i love them. it is an incredible, incredible game, and we got down to true freshman quarterback to make the first start and guys limited, but man, the defense is unbelievable job to step up, and just so proud of the football team and all they have been able to accomplish. >> katie: how much pride to watch the defense deliver for you and overdeliver at times? >> well, it is awesome, and you have been watching them practice this week, too, and so much confidence in what we are asked to do, and coach fuller and the staff doing an unbelievable job, and the players, they go out there to get it done d and a special night for the program.
8:43 pm
>> katie: it is going to be conversations tomorrow, and undefeated acc champion and why is this team deserving of playing in the college football playoff? >> a lot of great teams out there, and talented teams, and a lot of teams with ability, and a lot of the teams have the ability, and shown the ability and lost game, this team has not. they have responded to all situations, and this team has fought no matter the circumstance, and they continue to believe in who they were, and that is what football is all about. you know, it is hard to win a game, but these guys have found a way in every situation, and i am so proud of them, and all they have accomplished. >> katie: congratulation, i will see you on stage. >> go noles. >> that is the question asked of everybody. how do you define it. you heard the answer from mike norvell on his team and the cfp saying, those other teams they have lost game, and this team has not. they have responded to all
8:44 pm
situations. they fought. you know, you think about what it is to lose a star player. i don't know that you can apply that to college basketball mentality of selection sunday of taking a team down in the seedings to this sport. this is the ultimate team sport, and he just responded that way of saying fight. that is what football is all about, finding a way and fighting in every situation. they found a way down the stretch. >> jesse: it is hard to win every game in college football, 18 to 22-year-olds. and this staff has them focused and centered to do that, and this is in large part why, and people respect that, and the committee historically through ten years of the playoff have respected that if you are a power 5 team, and that i have gotten n and r resume with five top ten team,
8:45 pm
and the championship caliber level defense with tons of nfl talent as well. they have had to overcome injuries in critical moments and critical games and none bigger than jordan travis and none bigger than this one against the top 15 team. so that is what is in front of the committee, and that is what they will be talking about tonight and late into the night and early morning as well. but with texas and the 10-point win on the road in tuscaloosa in my eyes gives them a head up against bama, but the bama team just beat the number one team in georgia, and three teams in the top 13 that is much improved from earlier in the season when they lost against texas. >> joe: that is the premier win in the sport, and, you know, the commissioner sankey from the s.e.c. said, put it in the sesame street theory, and playing in this and the others doesn't look like the others and
8:46 pm
sizing up on the field compared to what we saw in atlanta, but you saw a championship team, and i know that for a fact and championship level defense in florida state. >> jesse: at the end of the day, you have to win the game. being the s.e.c. championship is the first step, and they have won their championship, and thinking about what they have had to overcome, and winning trailing by double-digit, and digging deep to get it done, and look at this guy, a true freshman making the first start, and the guy had four passes before he could come into game. >> joe: jesse, he can breathe all of the sudden, and all of the sudden is, he can breathe. >> jesse: yes, out there on center field about to go up on the center stage with katie george to celebrate with his buddies tonight, and wake up to tune in to see rece and the guys at noon to tell them whether or not they are playing in the college football line.
8:47 pm
>> joe: that stat line is not sizzling and lukewarm at best, but we are a quarterback-centric sports society, and yet, looking to the other side, and sizing them up, and would you not stack up this defense against anybody who you know who is in or is politicking to get in when you have verse and payton on the edge, and fiske and lovett and farmer in the middle, and those linebackers and defensive back. >> jesse: joe, from the eye standpoint look, and looking at the defensive roster, it is championship roster. i don't know if they have as many pick, but they have as many starters who will be playing in the nfl. >> joe: and that is proven best with the roster playing without the quarterbacks. >> jesse: and another thing that the committee will talk about is the possibility of the s.e.c. team not playing for first time. i know they have been the most
8:48 pm
dominant conference since 2006 easily, but this year is different and it started in the nonconference games, and they were 7-9 against the power 5 opposition and not as dominant as we are used to them being, so i wonder if that is something that the committee takes into account as well. >> joe: the acc had six wins over the s.e.c. had four over the big ten. the rest of fbs football was 10-47 with the combined records against the s.e.c. and big ten. >> jesse: it is a funny year, right, too, because you have three power 5 unbeatens. if you are alabama, the team that you are being compared to is a team that beat you by ten points in tuscaloosa. >> joe: that alabama team is not the alabama team that came down the stretch of the season. >> jesse: i know. >> joe: that week two alabama team with jalen milroe who, listen, he was benched next week, and now you are looking at the quarterback and looking at
8:49 pm
the team that took the field today against georgia and came up huge, a texas team that was shining bright, and now this florida state team that found a way with defense, with all of the sacks, with all of the tfls and the fifth acc championship, 13-0 for florida state and mike norvell. >> ladies and gentlemen, at this time, we would like to direct your attention to the stage for the presentation of the 2023acc football championship game awards. joining the acc and the florida state seminoles is katie george. >> katie: it is time for the 2023acc championship trophy presentation. first and foremost, a big congratulations to florida state and your fans for a hard fought victory and acc title. please welcome acc commissioner jim phillips to award head coach
8:50 pm
mike norvell with the acc championship trophy. >> all we got is all we need. all we got is all we need. >> all we got. >> all we need. >> katie: coach norvell norvell, when you think back to taking this job four years ago and the evolution, and the growth since, what makes you most proud? >> it is these players and all
8:51 pm
of the work they have put in and the commitment they have made, and every single day, we have pushed these guys to be the best they can be on the field and off of the field and in the classroom. and they continue to respond. we have the best group, and the best fan base in the united states of america! just, it is always about the work. and these guys, they show up day in, day out, and they put their hearts into it. and that is what it has shown. >> katie: you won this game on the back of the defense, and what can you say about them? >> they have gotten better all year long, and coach full ear on the defensive staff, and we knew it would be a team effort, and those guys were unbelievable. >> katie: i would be remiss if i did not ask you about the man behind you, and he just had surgery, and he wanted to be on the sidelines to support his teammate, and you would not be here without jordan travis. what does he mean to you? what does he mean to the florida
8:52 pm
state program? >> there's not enough words, and you know, an incredible example, you know, unbelievable teammate, and even through adversity, he is here and present and trying to make the best impact that he can, and just a special human being. >> jordan travis, jordan travis! >> katie: i know that you would have done anything in your power to be on that field tonight, and watching this team deliver for you, with you, and what does it mean for you? >> it means the world to me. i am so thankful for the fans to be out there today, and they brought so much energy for the football team, and so proud of the team. and they stepped up today, and brock stepping up, and it does not matter about the passing yards and get the matching rings today, and i am so happy and blessed, man. >> katie: it is an honor to
8:53 pm
cover your collegiate career, truly. >> thank you. >> katie: it is time to award the john d. swafford outstanding play, and your mvp of the 2023acc championship is lawrence toafili! lawrence, congratulations. you lined up in the wildcat and broke two huge funs that were the difference tonight, and what was the mindset on that drive? >> i could not do it without my team, and you know what i am saying. i tried to contribute however i could, and god put that in front of me and i was able to make it happen. >> katie: this team time and time again overcoming adversity and how strong is the unit? >> we go to the grind every day with each other, and we are a tight knit and brotherhood, man. we are in this together forever.
8:54 pm
>> katie: well, you won it together, and congratulations on the hard fought win, and congratulations to the 2023 acc champions, the florida seminoles! >> joe: 13-0, and a conference championship. they have reminded everyone here no one has been left out of the championship game. for katie george, jesse palmer, i'm joe tessitore, and more coverage continues on the acc network, and enjoy the rest of your evening.

8:59 pm
win, stanford is going to play top seeded florida state and they'll be history in the making. both teams enter undefeated in the ncaa final for the first time in ncaa women's soccer history that has ever happened. so stanford women's soccer, our toyota. let's go places player of the day. congrats to the cardinal. and time now for some hoops. after beating the clippers at chase center on thursday, the warriors and clips in la matinee this afternoon. for the second time this week, the dubs blow a 20 point second half lead. andrew wiggins warmed up but ruled out for the second straight game. he slammed his finger in a car door earlier this week. ouch moses moody again got the start in his place and let moses cook look at him work down low. he's a friend of our after the game program. got the hoop 21 points in 32 minutes for moses moody. draymond green started hot from deep. how about 4 or 5 from downtown in the first quarter a season high 21 points and nine rebounds for dre stephon curry how good is he went on a personal 8 to 0 run to end the half a little double team step back triple and then hit him
