9:17 am
we should be thinking about those that could use some extra support, but especially around the holidays. and that's really what this is all about, smart says. >> the drive collected more than 600 toys on saturday in santa rosa. the salvation army getting some star power from north bay celebrity chef guy fieri, who was bell ringing for donations. his foundation taking it a step further by bell ringing. >> there's not enough awareness, so people got to just walk by, but they don't know where that money really goes and what it does we do. so we've asked people to come down and we said whatever they put in the kettle today, we'll match with the salvation army says giving is down this season at a time when the need is great due to the high cost of living in the bay area, people are feeling a little more reluctant to give because they feel like maybe, perhaps they have to hold on to it, you know, for that rainy day. >> but it's events like this where people see guy out here giving and they feel they can give to the redwood empire food bank says it's financial donations are down 25% this holiday compared to 2022.
9:18 am
>> at a time when more families are requesting food to make ends meet. >> you're very concerned with what the new year is going to look like if we don't make our numbers this holiday season. things will have to change in the new year. >> north bay charities are hopeful the public will step up and come through during a season when their generosity is needed most. merry christmas in the north bay cornell bernard, abc seven news. >> well, it's officially winter, but you would not know it in new york city. here's a live look from the big apple right now. you can see a pretty foggy there. it's certainly dry out, but people there have not seen an inch of snow in exactly 657 consecutive days. that is the longest wait on record. and they're not the only ones. philadelphia baltimore and the washington, d.c. area have also been experiencing a similar snow drought. and here at home, drew, i saw that snowpack levels across lake tahoe are 30% down
9:19 am
of normal. >> yeah, it's almost winter is taking its time arriving across much of the lower 48. but with el nino, we'll find that usually january and february is when we start to see some of the more impactful storms move into not only our neck of the woods, but also the east coast. live doppler seven this morning is showing you we do have just some pockets of drizzle, mainly in marin county, a little bit of drizzle along the western side of the city. and for most of us right now, we're dry with a blend of sun and clouds. let's take you outside to our network of cameras. a live look from south beach, emeryville to the tam cam showing you those cloudy skies. we're seeing a bit more in the way of sunshine this morning from san jose. looking quite lovely in the south bay. but the last 24 hours, we have had some light, steady moisture move through mill valley close to a quarter of an inch of rainfall the last 24 hours. but other areas like the city, oakland, danville, san jose, concord, a lot less, just a few hundredths of an inch of rainfall with this system that
9:20 am
is really well to our north. here's live. doppler seven along with satellite. the storm track is really aimed at portland. we're just getting brushed by some of the outside isolated light showers of that storm system. that track is going to lift to the north. what will replace it? there's this ridge of high pressure that'll start to build in here tomorrow and tuesday. and that will bring about brighter skies and also a bit of a warm up before our next cold front slides through on wednesday. high temperatures right now were in the 50 soquel's, so it's not too chilly out there. but the flip side is these numbers are slow to warm because of the mostly cloudy conditions. overall highs today will go into the low end mid 60s, a bit below average with those mostly cloudy conditions. 64 in san rafael today, 63 in the city and in oakland, 65 in san jose, 64 and antioch, santa rosa, a little bit cooler coming in at 62 degrees tomorrow. we do have a beach hazard statement along our coastline with the increased threat of some sneaker waves and our west and northwest facing beaches have the highest threat of those sneaker waves.
9:21 am
so it's a really good idea if you're at the coast, just never turn your back to the water because those sneaker waves can really rush up on you and can really take you out. so overnight, as we head into our lows, you can see we'll be in the 40s and in the 50s tonight. here's future weather. what you'll see is that we're getting into a nice pattern tomorrow and tuesday with sunshine. but then on wednesday, say what we'll find is that cold front moves over us and it's likely wednesday morning we'll find some of the lighter showers, some steadier rain for the wednesday morning commute. just be aware of that. and some of these showers will likely linger into part of thursday looking at rainfall estimates as get you into wednesday and thursday, probably a 10th to a half of an inch of rain across the region, maybe a little bit higher across parts of the north bay where the rain arrives first and is kind of steadier throughout the morning. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. the next seven days for you. what you'll find is that it's a mostly cloudy day today. brighter and warmer tomorrow and tuesday, a level one light storm here on wednesday as that cold front swings through here, a couple of showers probably linger here on
9:22 am
thursday. stuff before we see drier skies friday and saturday. so the clouds today really stubborn. you'll get a little bit of sunshine here and there, but it is a mostly cloudy end to the weekend. >> all right. well, thank you, drew. and for the flash flood warnings, not likely for no. >> probably the heaviest rain. well, to our north, probably in oregon and washington. they're getting hit hard right now with the rain. we're just getting kind of like the leftovers. >> okay. yeah. thank you, drew. well, when we return, safety and beauty. that's the focus of one project underway in the south bay. leaders say they plan to improve the first impression of san jose. head dealer today because the black friday sales event is on now, just announced for black friday. >> lisa camry for just 279. a month after a $1,000 bonus cash. toyota's black friday sales event ends soon. toyota, let's go places. hey let's go somewhere fun. >> let's see where triple triple-a can take us. let's go get stuck in the sand. let's go

9:26 am
impacts people. >> perceptions of the direction our city is going in. and we have a choice to make. we can get back to basics, focus on safety and cleanliness, and create a virtuous cycle where people want to spend more time here and invest more here and grow here or not. tuesday, along the guadalupe river, mayor matt mehan put those words to action. >> this is the site of the city's first gateway cleanup program. what once looked like this has now turned into an area that is clear from trash, has boulders to help facilitate a no encampment zone and has flowers and trees planted to help beautify the area. >> the first thing they see is hopefully not graffiti. the first thing they see is not an encampment, but the first thing they see are our beautiful new, newly planted trees. new new, new plants. but most of all, clean gateways council member omar torres says the small business downtown have struggled to survive due to the poor impressions of the city and with work done to clean up the city. >> since he and mayor mehan took

9:39 am
with the us secret service, who oversees the san francisco field office. sean, great to have you with us. good morning, stephanie, and thanks for having me on. >> absolute lutely. >> well, first, can you explain to our viewers what a pig butchering scam is and how it got its name? >> yeah. so basically, the pig butchering scam, it's a type of romance scam that's a little more sophisticated in which criminals lure victims into a virtual relationship to build trust over time. eventually the victim is convinced into investing in cryptocurrency online, with the expectation that the money's going to double or triple in a matter of days, or even weeks. the victims take and monitor what they believe is a legitimate website, but it's actually fraudulent in which the victims believe their money is growing exponentially. there are obviously convinced over time to invest more and more money, thinking that their money is growing exponentially and it's at the point when they try to actually pull their money out
9:40 am
that they realize that they can't. at that point, they're kind of convinced like, hey, at first they've got to pay a capital gains tax on it. so when they're out of money, they've got to go to family members or take additional loans in order to pay for the capital gains tax. and then they've got to pay an export tax and the scam kind of continues to grow and grow until they don't have any money left. you know, all that whole process is what they call the fattening of the pig. and then obviously they're taken to the slaughter and they don't have any money left, which is unfortunate. >> and that's how it's got its name. interesting, john. and we've seen locally how devastating the impacts of this fraud can be on families. people giving up their entire life savings. i know one victim we spoke with last year, a software developer, lost $1.3 million. are you continuing to see more cases like that? >> yeah, unfortunately, i just talked to a victim yesterday that lost $750,000. so we're probably seeing an average of
9:41 am
400 to 500,000 just locally here in our office that comes in. you know, i know they're contacting police departments and other secret services offices, but we're still seeing it. usually in the hundreds of thousands in our area locally. >> can you walk us through how hackers are finding new ways to target victims in silicon valley ? >> yeah, i mean, they're definitely increasing and growing and sophistic nation. you know, the fictitious websites that we're seeing, the fictitious apps, they're putting a lot more time into the technology behind it and it becomes more and more convincing because we live in a digital world now where what you see online, whether it's your banking or credit card statements that you just believe. so it's really easy for people to fall prey to the scheme. >> and sean, we understand that your team is investigating several hundred applications that are being created in some cases, victims have reported these apps look almost identical to legitimate websites. yes. what can you tell us about that?
9:42 am
>> yes. as far as the websites specifically, like we usually try to mimic a legitimate cryptocurrency exchange. so take like a crack kraken .com. it's a good legitimate, you know, exchange operating here in the us. however, a fictitious website that we just discovered on a friday is cracking dash .com again, they're trying to mimic. they're using the same symbols as a legitimate organization on but then when you actually take and click on the like contact me button it our our contact us it will take you to a page but there's nothing there. it's just blank. but you can see it's got a really legitimate front. it's actually tracking bitcoin, it's tracking aetherium. it's a real time tracker on it. so it looks legit. but when you start clicking on the different buttons, they got very limited use. you know, you don't see the type of things that you would typically see on a home page like, you know, a press, you
9:43 am
know, the press release o careers or about us or anything that will actually describe the organization. and so that's one thing. if you actually take like crack and dash dotcom and actually put it into an internet search, you'll see a whole bunch of scam advisories are going to come up like, hey, don't trust this site. there's a lot of fraud. so that's a good way to actually verify some of these sites. but, you know, another one that we came across was galaxy dot x dot net. this also looks really legitimate. they put a lot of time into it. it's actually legitimately tracking several cryptocurrencies that look good. however for, you know, last night when i was on it, there was actually a systems failure, which is very common. a lot of times there's not a good backing infrastructure behind a lot of these. so a lot of times the websites come up in young periodically. if you click actually the download button, it will actually take you to what
9:44 am
appears to be like the app store. however, it's not. it's just kind of sending you to another website right at this point. people believe they're like downloading an app, but they're not. they're just on a regular website and then usually your phone will bring up an alert that says, hey, you're about to change down, load a configuration file and if you actually download this, this will give the criminal access to your phone to change the settings and they'll be able to turn off a lot of the security settings that are actually in place. but again, even with even with this website, if you google it or yahoo or bing, it will actually come up as a scam. and advisory. so yeah, it's a good way to double check. >> absolutely. i was just going to say a good reminder to always investigate the site itself before sending any money. great tips as always, sean. thank you so much for your insight. >> yes, thank you very much. >> absolutely. well, we're going
