in verse one of the biggest roadblocks in building a better san francisco. the perception, reputation and reality of crime in the city by the bay. tonight we're devoted to taking a full look at the true picture of public safety and how it's changing with real numbers to back it all up and now we're giving you a direct path to take action and talk with those in charge. all of it. part of our mission here in building a better bay area. hi there and good evening. i'm dionne lynn. we'll get to our key town hall style moment in just a moment.

but to start, we do want to focus on the weather because it will be picking up later this week. lisa argen joining us now to walk us through what to expect on monday in our full 24 hour accuweather forecast. lisa. >> hi diane. we are looking at fog already right now. visibility has been reduced in the north bay to about a quarter of a mile in napa, three quarters of a mile in santa rosa . and as you look at what happens tomorrow morning, we have some dense fog in the east bay, the tri-valley, the south bay, even into san francisco. it'll clear by about 830 and then temperatures really not too cold. by 8:00. we're in the upper 40s to low 50s. plenty of sunshine and with high pressure building in we've got some low 60s to mid 60s coming into play throughout the afternoon. tuesday gets even milder. we're still going to be talking about fog though for your tuesday morning sun setting at 450 all week long. we'll be tracking rain as well for the middle of the week. coming up in a few minutes. diane. >> all right. sounds good. lisa, thanks. now, keep in mind, there is the potential for dangerous

sneaker waves around the bay area starting tomorrow afternoon and into this week. the national weather service says the large waves could sweep across northwest facing beaches as just last weekend. you may remember, a five year old girl died and her grandfather went missing after being swept away by large waves in halfmoon bay. his body has not been recovered across the country, people are talking about san francisco's image crisis. the homeless, drugs and empty downtown and crime. how do we move beyond these issues and build a better bay area? that is what we'll address in a live town hall style event on monday with mayor london breed police chief bill scott and district attorney brooke jenkins. as part of the conversation will be around moving past san francisco's viral videos of smash and grab robberies and rampant shoplifting in its shocking videos like these that have given san francisco a reputation for crime in recent years. what the i've reported on many horrendous cases and

received tips from viewers daily on social media. viewers are clearly fed up. a gallup poll shows san francisco was ranked a top city for perceived safety in 2006, but has seen a nearly 20 point drop in recent years. but does perception align with reality? we combed through years of crime stats and the results are complicated. but overall, san francisco's violent crime rate is low compared to other major cities. in the most recent data from 2022, san francisco clocked in at 658 violent crimes per 100,000 people. this lags behind new york, los angeles and houston. it's also half the rate of minneapolis, a city with less than half the population. violent crimes include homicide and rape, aggravated assault and robbery. a robbery is when property is taken from someone through threats or harm. san francisco was thrust into the national spotlight with this video in 2020. one of a massive smash and grab robbery involving nine people at a louis vuitton at union square. the next year,

gun wielding individuals hit a camera shop for $180,000 in year four, according to sfpd data. in our neighborhood safety tracker, robberies increased slightly in the last 12 months, compared to all of 2022. but they haven't reached pre-pandemic levels. videos of shoplifting have gone viral as well. who could forget this video captured by abc7 lyanne melendez at a walgreens where a garbage bag wielding shoplifter rides a bicycle right out the front door. shoplifting has become such a problem. some stores say it's part of the reason they've closed in recent months. data from the california department of justice shows a significant rise in 2022 than the pre-pandemic average. and then there's this here in san francisco. it's not hard to find broken glass from car break-ins on the street, you'll see signs like these all over encouraging drivers to park smart. they frequently happen in tourist hotspots like lombard street or the palace of fine arts. cases

seem so commonplace. several months ago, the san francisco da and police chief held this briefing. >> we are are re staffing our deployment for our tourist areas. >> if you look at unconfirmed vehicle incident reports from sfpd, the numbers are high. 18,262 break ins year to date in 2023. but they're actually lower than pre-pandemic when in 2019 there were more than 25,000 break ins during the same months . >> are you sick of it? >> of course i am. >> now, i've interviewed hundreds of crime victims over the years and ask many of them. they will say the numbers are skewed. that's because people tell me they have given up simply reporting the break ins to police. so here it is. our in-depth coverage culminates tomorrow with take action, san francisco. it's a town hall event where we'll talk with san francisco's mayor, police chief and district attorney. it's hosted by abc7's very own reggie aqui lyanne melendez and phil

matier. and you can watch it live tomorrow. it's streaming at 7 p.m. on our abc7 news bay area app or wherever you happen to stream all this week. faculty members will be on strike from california state university campuses. it's all part of their plan to demand for better pay protests will take place on for csu campuses starting at cal poly tomorrow. san francisco state university on tuesday, then cal state, la on wednesday and sacramento state on thursday. the union represents about 29,000 faculty members. they're asking for 12% raise this year for those workers. officials at csu are offering 15% over the next three years. well, moving on now to the new details in the skies tonight as we take a live look across our three major bay area airports. there is big news that could affect your travel plans in the future. alaska airlines is reaching an agreement to acquire hawaiian airlines in a nearly $2

billion mega deal. as for what reporter j.r. stone spoke to the experts about how this might impact your next flight, alaska airlines announced sunday they will buy hawaiian airlines in a $1.9 billion deal. >> alaska wants to grow and needs to grow and hawaiian needs to find a way to accelerate its growth. >> so this merger would help both with that objective. >> henry heartfelt is president of the travel industry consulting firm atmosphere research group. he talked about the routes currently flown by each airline, something that was discussed on a conference call with executives. >> the airlines have 433 routes, of which only 12 overlap. now the concern i do have is immediate here in the bay area, where both hawaiian and alaska fly between the bay area airports and hawaii, that would take out a competitor kane astro, from going .com believes

overlapping routes between the two is a big concern going forward a merger of this size whose route maps do overlap a little bit would result in not any more cheap flights for consumers, but fewer cheap flights for consumers. >> as a consumer, we actually want competition. airlines don't want competition with each other. they want to be the only one flying on specific routes because they can then set the prices harder. >> felt believes that another major carrier would then come in to fill the spot when one airline leaves, another airline will try to enter. >> so i think you will see competition sustained between the mainland and hawaii. >> the deal still needs to be approved by shareholders and the government. if that happens, alaska airlines says there. fleet will grow from 300 airplanes to 365 planes, making it the fifth largest airline in the country. they go on to say

houthi rebels launched an hours long assault in the red sea. >> the us says there was a series of missile attacks on multiple vessels in international waters and drones flying towards a us warship. the pentagon says the uss carney acted in self-defense over the course of six hours. it followed , threatened and ultimately took out three drones. officials telling abc news the drones were launched from houthi controlled territories of yemen. the houthis claiming responsibility for the attack, citing the israel-hamas war, saying their goal was to target israeli ships. no casualties were reported, but us central command saying the attacks jeopardized the lives of international crews representing multiple countries around the world. the pentagon saying it will consider all appropriate responses in coordination with allies and partners. the us is being very careful not to turn the red sea into a shooting gallery. >> the houthis continue to target what they say are only israeli ships, but the us needs to be assured and the world

needs to be assured that there's freedom of navigation and that ships could transit the heavily trafficked red sea. >> last month, houthi rebels releasing this video showing armed members using a helicopter to hijack a cargo ship. the carney is one of several warships and aircraft carriers sent to the red sea after the outbreak of israel's war with hamas. with orders to show force and keep iranian backed militias in the region from expanding the war front. also last month, the houthis claimed this unverified video shows them shooting down a us reaper drone. and in late october, the carney already intercepting four missiles and 15 drones, headed from houthi controlled territories toward targets in israel. derrick dennis, abc news, new york. >> kites were seen high above crissy field today, a nod to the world record set by children in gaza back in 2011. the group kites in solidarity held a kite flight over san francisco to bring awareness to the children. being affected by the war in gaza. kites were also available

at our live doppler seven right now, high pressure is nosing in to the south of us. but you can see a little rain there. the pacific northwest getting a break for monday, but they have been pounded with an atmospheric river and much more rain, five, six inches to come up and around portland, seattle, three quarters of a mile. visibility now in santa rosa with a quarter mile in napa. we'll see more fog settle in from san francisco to the south bay impacts the morning commute. right now it is 53 in concord, 48, santa rosa, 46 in napa where that fog is. and temperatures, they're not going to be dropping off too much because we are going to be insulated with the cloud cover. there's a look at the golden gate bridge and with the clouds tonight and the patchy fog developing, it could be pretty tricky for your early drive tomorrow. but increasing sunshine, mild temperatures on the way and then looking at rain returning wednesday, another weak system, possibly thursday. and we talked about the beach hazard statement a little bit

dion did. but this will continue to impact the monday afternoon and evening time frame with sneaker waves possible west north west, facing beaches from point rays all the way down to big sur, high seas, very energetic swell here. so keep that in mind if you're headed to the coast. hour by hour, we go with high pressure bringing sunshine in for your monday. the higher clouds on tuesday. here's a look at that rain could get a little damp for your wednesday morning commute, but we're stopping this at 930. most of the rain heading up to the north bay. but you can see we are wet all the way into the south bay. it's a quick mover, though, because by the afternoon commute, we have got dry conditions, rainfall amounts anywhere from a couple of hundredths in the south bay to tenths in the north bay, maybe a third of an inch up in santa rosa. and then another piece of energy wants to visit us on thursday. and that could just add a little bit more to the totals perhaps around a quarter of an inch in livermore. as we look at the overnight lows

apple became the target of a christmas grinch while running errands on the peninsula for a man named jesus tells me he and his wife picked up a christmas tree on friday evening and was spotted here in san mateo. but watch as the white suv passes by, then actually backs up and then parks into the neighboring space. the driver of that suv cuts each rope, loads the tree into their trunk and then drives away. san mateo police tell me

this is a unique case and they'll be keeping an eye on what's going on as especially as we get closer to christmas. the tree scrooge hasn't been identified, but police say the christmas tree lot provided jesus with a new tree. well as the holiday shopping season hits full swing, a few small businesses in san francisco are providing local events as incentives to lure shoppers to their neighborhoods. two in particular, chinatown and the castro, have shop owners getting creative from store passport stamps and prizes to toy giveaways for kids in need to weekend events are highlighting the complex challenges. san francisco faces in its post-pandemic roadmap. >> i think one of the issues that we see here living in san francisco, there's a lot of economic and social disparities that we need to address. but this is just something that we can do as an immediate solution to sprinkle a little bit of magic during the holidays. the small san francisco businesses are hoping shoppers will think local this holiday season.

>> moving on tonight, the abc seven news i-team is uncovering more on so-called pig butchering scams. it's a type of crypto fraud and it is on the rise. the us secret service says the scam originated in southeast asia and is spreading around the world. i-team reporter stephanie sierra is finding out how it might be hitting right here in the bay area. >> the pig butchering scam, it's a type of romance scam that's a little more sophisticated in which criminals lure victims into a virtual relationship to build trust over time. eventually, the victim is convinced into investing in the crypto currency online with the expectation that the money's going to double or triple in a matter of days or even weeks. the victims take and monitor what they believe is a legitimate website, but it's actually fraudulent in which the victims believe their money is growing exponentially. at that point, they're kind of convinced like, hey, at first they've got

to pay a capital gains tax on it. so when they're out of money, they've got to go to family members or take additional loans. >> one victim we spoke with last year, a software developer, lost $1.3 million. are you continuing to see more cases like that? >> yeah, unfortunately, i just talked to a victim yesterday that lost $750,000. so we're probably seeing an average of 400 to 500,000 just locally here in our office. >> can you walk us through how hackers are finding new ways to target victims in silicon valley ? >> yeah, i mean, they're definitely increasing and growing in sophistication. so take like crack cracking.com. it's a good legitimate, you know, exchange operating here in the us. however fictitious website that we just discovered on a friday is cracking .com and we came across was galaxy dot x dot net. if you click actually the download button, it will actually take you to what

appears to be like the app store. however, it's not. it's just kind of sending you to another website. it that was stephanie sierra of the abc7 news i-team reporting. >> now agent broad street says one way to check the legitimacy of the website is to do an internet search for the name. it should pop up with a scam advisory if it is in question. if you have a story for the i-team, you can call the number that's on your screen right now or head to abc7 news.com, i-team moving to the south bay now, local biologists are concerned about a sudden salmon die off in the lower silver creek near downtown san jose. one local watchdog group says about 50 dead salmon have been discovered over the last 30 days in the waters running underneath the highway 101 bridge. the group blames pollution, but also says the bridge design stops the salmon from migrating along the construction zone is disperses the water or only makes it an inch deep and the fish get into

of trailblazer continues with the stuart scott memorial cancer research fund. >> it funds research others who are focusing on areas of health care and cancer research that in which there are discrepancies along racial lines. it also funds minority researchers themselves to pursue the research projects that they're interested in. >> his daughters, sydney and taylor, say the work those researchers are doing is saving lives. and with the espn's help the fund, in partnership with the v foundation, has awarded nearly $16 million in grants since its inception in 2015. >> the 54 researchers that have been funded by my dad's program have collectively generated over 7500 publications, 1200 patents and connected to over 125 clinical trials work the scott sisters say their father would have been incredibly proud of. >> i think that booyah really encapsulates how my dad would
