this. wow >> good morning. it's monday, december fourth. i'm stephanie sierra. yes. so happy. >> hi. it's great to be with you guys. yes >> yes. and we're going to start the check of our forecast. >> yeah, good morning. so we do have areas of dense fog out there, a dense fog advisory is in effect for the valleys of the north bay and solano county until 10 a.m. this morning. we are seeing areas where visibility is very low, especially around novato, petaluma. we're at zero miles. visibility elsewhere. you can see napa, fairfield, we're at half a mile and it's not only there, look at this. this is our rooftop camera at kgo. and you can barely see even the lights of the embarcadero if you could on a clear morning, you would be able to see the ferry building. so temperatures right now we're in the 40s and in the 50s with this moisture overhead, this fog is going to linger through 10 a.m. so we're going to keep it pretty cloudy first thing early on. but that fog breaks down. we do get a fair amount of afternoon sunshine. so it will be a bright finish to the day. temperatures going into the mid

for students. ryan kumasi. >> good morning. this is the last week before final exams. those actually begin this coming saturday. we're waiting to hear from the school about how that's going to be affected by this ongoing strike. but a nervy time for students and staff as we prepare for the end of the semester. faculty, staff, students, union members and others will be here on campus demonstrating they want what they call a fair contract. the union says csu management rejected their demands. the deadline to reach an agreement was last week. so now the strike begins. the teachers union or the union representing these teachers is asking for the following a 12% raise to keep up with inflation, manageable workloads and expanded paid parental leave to last the entire semester semester for more counselors for students safety, for provisions and much more. csu management says they can't afford those proposals. and as we prepare for those final exams, they say right now those teachers union has to use

this time to get that fair contract that they say they deserve. so we're going to be keep tracking this all week to see how it's going to be impacting this university as it prepares for the end of the semester here. we're live in san francisco. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> all right, thank you, ryan. on the peninsula now, a bay area couple became the target of a christmas grinch while running errands. a man named jesus tells abc seven news he and his wife picked up a christmas tree on friday evening and was spotted right here in san mateo. but watch as this white suv passes by, then backs up and parks in the neighboring space. the driver of that suv cuts each rope, loads the tree into their suv and then drives away the tree. scrooge has not been identified, but police say the christmas tree lot provided jesus with a new tree. across the country, people are talking about crime here in the bay area , specifically san francisco. >> yes, the homeless drugs empty downtown and of course, crime. but how do we move beyond these
5:05 am
issues to build a better bay area? so that is what we are addressing in a live town hall style event today with mayor london breed police chief william scott and district attorney brooke jenkins. part of this conversation will be around moving past san francisco's viral videos of smash and grab robberies and rampant shoplifting. here's abc news reporter dion lim. >> it's shocking videos like these that have given san francisco a reputation for crime in recent years. what the i've reported on many horrendous cases and received tips from viewers daily on social media. viewers are clearly fed up. a gallup poll shows san francisco was ranked a top city for perceived safety in 2006, but has seen a nearly 20 point drop in recent years. but does perception align with reality? we combed through years of crime stats and the results are complicated. overall, san francisco's violent crime rate is low compared to other major cities in the most recent data from 2022, san francisco clocked
5:06 am
in at 658. violent crimes per 100,000 people. this lags behind new york, los angeles and houston. it's also half the rate of minneapolis, a city with less than half the population. violent crimes include homicide and rape, aggravated assault and robbery. a robbery is when property is taken from someone through threats or harm. san francisco was thrust into the national spotlight with this video in 2020. one of a massive smash and grab robbery involving nine people at a louis vuitton at union square. the next year, gun wielding individuals hit a camera shop for $180,000 in year four, according to sfpd data. in our neighborhood safety tracker, robberies increased slightly in the last 12 months, compared to all of 2022. but they haven't reached pre-pandemic levels. videos of shoplifting have gone viral as well. who could forget this video captured by abc7's lyanne melendez at a walgreens where a garbage bag wielding shoplifter rides a bicycle right
5:07 am
out the front door shop lifting has become such a problem some stores say it's part of the reason they've closed in recent months. data from the california department of justice shows a significant rise in 2022 than the pre-pandemic average. and then there's this. here in san francisco. it's not hard to find broken glass from car break-ins on the street. you'll see signs like these all over encouraging drivers to park smart, but they frequently happen in tourist hotspots like lombard street or the palace of fine arts cases seem so commonplace. several months ago, the san francisco da and police chief held this briefing. >> we are restaffing our deployment for our tourist areas . >> if you look at unconfirmed vehicle incident reports from sfpd, the numbers are high. 18,262 break ins year to date in 2023. but they're actually lower than pre-pandemic when in 2019 there were more than 25,000 break ins during the same months
5:08 am
. >> are you sick of it? >> of course i am. >> i've interviewed hundreds of crime victims over the years and ask many of them and they will say the data is skewed. it's because oftentimes they're frustrated and have given up reporting to police in san francisco, dion lim, abc7 news. >> our in-depth coverage of these issues continues tonight when san francisco mayor london breed police chief william scott and district attorney brooke jenkins, as we mentioned, will be sitting down to talk with abc news about the big issues facing san francisco as well as the solution means take action. san francisco will be hosted by seven's own reggie aqui lee melendez and abc7 news insider phil matier. you can watch live tonight at streaming at 7 p.m. on our abc7 news bay area apps or wherever you stream abc seven news developing news now in the middle east. >> over the weekend iran backed houthi rebels attacked commercial ships. that prompted the us to intervene with a naval

5:10 am
us central command says the attacks represent a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security. kumasi. >> thanks, jobina. and those attacks on us naval ships come as israel is renewing its military operations in gaza. the israeli military says it expanded, quote, ground operations to every part of the gaza strip. hospitals in gaza report being overwhelmed with hundreds of people killed just over the weekend. the us is urging israel to protect innocent civilians. meanwhile, more than 130 hostages taken by hamas are still being held. >> we're working at this literally by the hour. the national security council and all the way up the high levels of the administration to try to see hour by hour if we can get these discussions back going going forward to see if we can get the pause back in place and get the hostages out in gaza. >> the hamas run health ministry says more than 700 people have been killed, hundreds more
