hub here at sfo, decides to buy rival hawaiian airlines. what it could mean for your future travel plans. ben the 2023 word of the year, something tom holland said on the red carpet during an interview. >> i'm going to tell you what it is and then see if you know what it means. >> good morning. it's monday, december 4th. >> yes. and we're excited to be with you this monday, starting with a check of our forecast with drew. >> yeah, so this morning, we do have areas of fog that is pretty thick out there. there's a dense fog advisory in effect in the north bay. this until 10 a.m. this morning. but there are other areas is outside of the north bay seeing that low cloud cover oakland you have thick fog as well. we're down to a quarter of a mile there, down to about two and a half miles in mountain view. we even have fog over the city this morning. in fact, here's our rooftop camera at kgo along the embarcadero on a totally clear morning, you would be able to see the ferry building lit up in the holiday colors. the piers can't see any of that. you can barely see some of the street lights this morning. so that dense fog will

lift right around 10 a.m. once it lifts, we'll get bright skies this afternoon and a warmer day compared to yesterday with temperatures in the mid 60s. that's the forecast. let's see how we're doing on the roads with that fog this morning. good morning, jobina. >> good morning, drew. thank you. hi everybody. so we have a couple of crashes to talk about before we show you some other live cameras with that fog. we're going to start in sunol, where this crash is causing a big slowdown on southbound 680 before andretti road. your traffic is backed up past 84. there so keep in mind, if that's a part of your commute. also in richmond, we have a new crash on westbound 84 san pablo avenue speeds down to around ten miles per hour in this spot at the bay bridge toll plaza. the chp has issued a dense fog advisory for the bridge metering. lights came on at 532. we will end here with a live look from the san mateo bridge where it is very foggy here as well. >> thanks, jobina. happening today, faculty members at cal state university schools are striking for higher pay and those demonstrations will eventually come here to the bay area. the first strike is today at cal poly pomona, followed by picketing at san francisco state

tomorrow. then csu, los angeles, wednesday, sacramento state on thursday, abc7 news reporter ryan curry live at san francisco state with the potential impact to students. ryan >> yeah, kumasi. good morning. final exams actually begin here very soon for the fall semester beginning actually as early as this saturday. so we know this week is usually very busy for faculty and staff, but with the strike going on, that's going to have an impact on things. we're waiting to hear from the university about what they plan to do about that. but yes, there will be demonstrations here this week. faculty staff, students, union members, all will be on campus demonstrating theirs is tomorrow. they want what they call a fair contract. the union representing them, says csu management rejected their demands. the deadline to reach an agreement was last week. so now the strike begins. the union representing this faculty, they're asking for the following a 12% pay raise to keep up with inflation in manageable workloads and an expanded paid

parental leave to last an entire semester. more counselors for students safety provisions and much more. csu management says they can't afford all of the things that they are demanding. the union says they can't afford all of that with final exams coming up, we know that students usually would like to meet with their faculty this time of year to make sure they're ready for those final exams. they can't do that right now with the strike going on. so we're going to have to wait and see what happens to this campus throughout the week. we're live at san francisco state, ryan curry, abc seven news. ryan, thank you. >> on the peninsula now a bay area couple became the target of a christmas grinch while running errands. take a look at this. a man named jesus tells abc seven news he and his wife picked up a christmas tree on friday evening and was spotted right here in san mateo. but watch as this white suv passes by, then backs up shortly and parks in the neighboring space. now, the driver of that suv cuts each row

load the tree into their suv and then drives away the tree. scrooge has not been identified, but police say the christmas tree lot provided jesus with a new tree. new details now. changes are coming to big name air carriers that could affect your future travel plans. alaska airlines announced to an agreement to acquire hawaiian airlines in a nearly $2 billion deal. now, if the deal goes through, alaska airlines will be the fifth largest airline nationwide. the companies say honolulu and hawaii will become major hubs, offering expanded service to locations throughout the asia pacific region. however our experts are concerned with overlapping routes between the two airlines. >> a merger of this size whose route maps do overlap a little bit, would result in not any more cheap flights for consumers, but not fewer cheap flights for consumers. >> now, the deal still needs to be approved by the government

and shareholders. both airlines say they will continue to operate under their current names indefinitely. >> developing news in the middle east over the weekend, iran backed houthi rebels attacked commercial ships and that prompted the us to intervene with a naval destroyer. jobina is at the live desk with the details of what happened. jobina >> thank you. kumasi. three commercial ships were attacked in the red sea. the pentagon excuse me, everybody. there we go. the pentagon says missiles coming from yemen hit the ships during the seven hour long attack. the uss carney, a navy destroyer in the area, intercepted and shot down three drones while patrolling and assisting the ships there. the pentagon is blaming iran for the attacks. >> it may have been that the missiles flew over the ships on their way to the intended target, which is one of the civilian ships. so there's a little bit of semantics here, but the important point here is that the houthis are playing with fire by launching missiles over us ships. >> in a statement, the pentagon said, quote, the united states will consider all appropriate

responses in full, coordinate action with its international allies and partners. this isn't the first attack since the start of the war between israel and hamas. there have been a number of attacks from houthi controlled areas of yemen on ships in the red sea. us central command says the attacks represent a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security. >> stephanie jobina, thank you. and speaking those attacks on us naval ships comes as israel renews its military operation in gaza. the israeli military says it expanded ground operations to every part of the gaza strip. hospitals in gaza report being overwhelmed with hundreds killed just over the weekend. the us is now urging israel to protect innocent civilians. meanwhile, more than 130 hostages taken by hamas are still being held. >> we're working at this literally by the hour. the national security council and all the way up the high levels of the administration to try to see hour by hour if we can get

around the guards and tower. it's one of the so-called two towers that look out over central bologna. it has been leaning since it was built between 1109 and 1119. in the 1100s. officials say it sustained more damage in the medieval area when ironwork and bakery ovens were built inside and the city announced $4.7 million to fix the structure. >> hey, drew. hey, good morning, stephanie. live look outside. this is our south beach camera. and on a clear morning, you would be able to see the entire western span of the bay bridge. you can not see any of the

bridge this morning. if you look off right in the corner, just a few cars, the headlights moving into the city. we have dense fog out there this morning across parts of the city, the east bay, the north bay and we're seeing visibility less than a quarter of a mile right now. that dense fog advisory lasts until about 10 a.m. this morning. use your low beams with your car's headlights and add some extra distance driving this morning. that fog will lift after 10 a.m. it's actually a nice afternoon. we'll get a lot of sunshine out there and temperatures a bit warmer than yesterday going into the mid 60s. under that afternoon. sunshine looking at the three day forecast fog to sun today, a repeat performance tomorrow. tomorrow's a little bit warmer than today. but by wednesday, rain returns to the forecast with a level one light storm on the abc seven storm impact scale. we'll go into detail with our next rain maker coming up in about nine minutes. stephanie >> drew, thank you. coming up, weight loss pills like ozempic may actually stop your alcohol cravings. the results from a new study. and moving beyond problems like crime and homelessness to build a better bay area. the town hall tonight

conversation will be around moving past san francisco's viral videos of smash and grab robberies and rampant shoplifting. here's abc news anchor diane lin. >> it's shocking videos like these that have given san francisco a reputation for crime in recent years. what i've reported on many horrendous cases and received tips from viewers daily on social media. viewers are clearly fed up. a gallup poll shows san francisco was ranked a top city for perceived safety in 2006, but has seen a nearly 20 point drop in recent years. but does perception align with reality? we combed through years of crime stats and the results are complicated. but overall, san francisco's violent crime rate is low compared to other major cities. in the most recent data from 2022, san francisco clocked in at 658. violent crimes per 100,000 people. this lags behind new york, los angeles and houston. it's also half the rate of minneapolis, a city with less than half the population.

violent crimes include homicide and rape, aggravated assault and robbery. a robbery is when property is taken from someone through threats or harm. san francisco was thrust into the national spotlight with this video in 2020. one of a massive smash and grab robbery involving nine people at a louis vuitton at union square. the next year, gun wielding individuals hit a camera shop for $180,000 in year, according to sfpd data. in our neighborhood safety tracker, robberies increased slightly in the last 12 months compared to all of 2022. but they haven't reached pre-pandemic levels. videos of shoplifting have gone viral as well. who could forget this video captured by abc7's lyanne melendez at a walgreens where a garbage bag wielding shoplifter rides a bicycle right out the front door. shoplifting has become such a problem. some stores say it's part of the reason they've closed in recent months. data from the california department of justice shows a significant rise in 2022 than the pre pandemic average. and

then there's this here in san francisco. it's not hard to find broken glass from car break-ins on the street, you'll see signs like these all over encouraging drivers to park smart. they frequently happen in tourist hotspots like lombard street or the palace of fine arts. these cases seem so commonplace. several months ago, the san francisco da and police chief held this briefing. >> we are are restaffing our deployment for our tourist area. >> if you look at unconfirmed vehicle incident reports from sfpd, the numbers are high. 18,262 break ins year to date in 2023. but they're actually lower than pre-pandemic when in 2019 there were more than 25,000 break ins during the same months . >> are you sick of it? >> of course i am. >> i've interviewed hundreds of crime victims over the years and ask many of them and they will say the data is skewed. it's because oftentimes they're frustrated and have given up

that vegas heat. now, the stadium is planned to be built on a portion of the tropicana resort site on the vegas strip. however, there is still a very long approval process and multiple years before this ballpark is ready to play ball. >> oxford is out with its 2023 word of the year. it is riz, which means romantic appeal. riz is defined a style, charm, attractiveness and the ability to attract a romantic partner. it's thought to be a shortened version of the word charisma. searches of the word spiked after spider-man actor tom holland asked was asked about his riz during an interview over the summer. he said, i have no riz whatsoever for okay. now wait a minute. i don't believe that. don't believe it. >> you get some dayereh for real? >> right. right >> gotta have a little sprinkle, a little bit. a little something . >> a little sprinkle. >> it is a little. >> a little something. a little. a little dash. a little dash of riz. that's gosh. all right. good morning. so we do have

dense fog out there. that's the big story this morning. and it's also a cooler start to the day. we're in the 40s for the most part. a couple of low 50s on the board. but here's a live look at our rooftop camera at kgo. you can clearly see that dense fog across parts of the city in the east bay as well. and in the north bay, a dense fog advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. so we'll keep a lot of this cloud cover in for about the next 3.5 hours. after 10 a.m, the fog begins to lift for brighter conditions. it's also a warmer afternoon with temperatures in the 60s. we do have a beach hazard statement in effect today. we'll see the increased threat of sneaker waves along our coastline today into early tomorrow morning as well. today we'll have that morning dense fog lifting for brighter afternoon sunshine. temperatures a few degrees warmer today than we were yesterday. we'll go into the mid 60s by about 3 p.m. tonight, though, we do expect again areas of dense fog to develop. so that means we'll see more pockets of low visibility for the tuesday morning commute and temperatures in the 40s and in the 50s tuesday afternoon. on future weather, it's just a

partly cloudy sky, but by wednesday here comes our next cold front. it's probably going to move through here right around the middle part of our day. wednesday this is 1 p.m. we are expecting some steady light rain to cross the bay area and that rainfall amounts will total anywhere from a few hundredths to as much as a half of an inch of rain. it's a level one light storm on the abc7 storm impact scale. so wet weather does return to the forecast. the middle part of this upcoming week. here's the accuweather seven day. it's all about that dense fog this morning for afternoon sun warmer tomorrow before those rain showers return on wednesday. an isolated chance is possible thursday but then cooler air starts to move in and we'll track some frosty mornings beginning on friday. jobina >> thank you, drew. good morning, everybody. so if you were with us earlier and you heard me talk about that crash in richmond that has cleared, which is good news, but we are still following this crash in sunol that is really clogging up things on southbound 680. the crash itself is going to be right before andrade road. your speeds are tracking around 11mph. it may not look like

two times in an arizona federal prison. his attorney says his condition has improved. he has returned to work. excuse me, to prison custody for follow up care. chauvin is currently serving a 22.5 year sentence for the murder of george floyd. another incarcerated person stabbed chauvin, the day after thanksgiving. that person is now facing federal attempted murder charges. new research on weight loss, drugs and its effect with with alcohol. it finds that people who use ozempic and wegovy may prevent alcohol overuse and abuse. a case study using people diagnosed with alcohol use disorder found a significant decrease in symptoms while using these weight loss drugs. users report they have

little to no desire to drink alcohol. the small case study now sets the stage for larger trials and more research. dive teams find more wreckage from that us air force osprey that crashed last week. the discovery they made at the scene and the man who can thank a phone for saving his life, the device that literally stopped a bullet.

>> good morning, everybody. happy monday. it is december 4th. >> thank you all for joining us this morning. let's send it over to our friend drew tuma for a check on the forecast. >> good morning. so we do have that dense fog out there in spots in the north bay, the east bay, the city. here's a live look. this is our tam cam. if you look down below, you can see all that low cloud cover right now on our tam cam. we'll look at this ability currently on live doppler seven. you can see we're down to a quarter of a mile in oakland. zero miles in novato. even mt. view getting a taste of this fog. visibility less than a mile. so dense fog advisory in effect until 10 a.m. you can see here from our rooftop camera along the embarcadero. how foggy it is. so that dense fog until 10 a.m, clouds will lift after 10 a.m. for a bright afternoon. but just be aware that visibility is quite low for the next several hours. this morning, later on this afternoon, those temperatures feeling a bit warmer than yesterday. we'll have those numbers go into the mid 60s. now, today's dry, but rain does return to the forecast by the middle part of the week. we'll show you our next storm coming up in about six minutes.

let's check in with jobina and your traffic soon with all this fog, this morning. thank you, drew. >> good morning, everybody. yes, on that note, so i'm starting here with the san mateo bridge and all the fog in this area while the chp has not officially issued a fog advisory here, i know that this will impact a couple of people that are not a couple. i think many people that are taking this bridge and trying to get to palo alto. there's now a fog advisory issued in palo alto on northbound 101 from embarcadero to ellis. so keep in mind of that. this is our bay bridge camera from our south beach side here. so you should see the western span at the bridge and you're starting to make out those headlights just a little bit off to the left hand side there. the toll plaza is looking much better, though. and i should mention the metering lights came on at 532. we will end with a look at this crash. still causing a big backup in sunol on southbound 680 before andre de road. stephanie jobina, thank you. >> happening today, faculty members at four california state university campuses are kicking off a series of one day strikes. it's part of their plan to demand for better pay. one of

the schools being impacted this week is san francisco state. that's where we find abc7 news reporter ryan curry. good morning, ryan. >> yeah, stephanie, good morning. final exams actually begin very soon here for the fall semester ends in just two weeks. and yes, the union says they have not received a satisfact deal so they will be planning on striking this week. the demonstration at san francisco state will be held tomorrow. others will be going on throughout the state. one today at cal state pomona, faculty, staff, union leaders and students will be demonstrating, asking csu to give them the contract they want . the union has a list of demands they want met a 12% raise to keep up with inflation in manageable workloads and expanded paid parental leave to last an entire semester. more counselors for students safety provisions and much more. the csu says they can't afford to give the union those demands. they can't afford to give them

what they want. the union says they actually can. so there's a lot of back and forth between the two sides. but for students here going to san francisco state, we're going to be impacted by this. with the semester coming up. they say they will have to make adjustments. we're going to wait to see what those adjustments are going to be. we will be reaching out to them to get a further update. we're live here at san francisco state. i'm ryan curry, abc seven news. thank you, ryan. >> it is a surprising trend. you might notice while you're doing your holiday shopping this season, some retailer owners are changing their return policy. and a survey of major us retailers, 59% are telling shoppers just to keep the items that would cost more for the retailer to ship back last year, just 26% of surveyed companies had the, quote, return less policy. i ordered a rug and when it arrived to me, i realized the color just wasn't right. >> and they were like, you know what? no, just keep it. we encourage you to donate it to someone who needs it, but we don't need that thing back.

>> retailers are not advertising this policy or revealing which items it might apply to, but experts say there are some items companies are more likely to consider letting you keep things like food, clothing, bedding or newly used baby products. as the holiday shopping season gets into full swing, a few small businesses in san francisco are providing local events as incentives to lure shoppers to their neighborhoods. there are two in particular chinatown and the castro. they have shop owners getting pretty creative from store passports, stamps and prizes to toy giveaways for kids in need to. weekend events are highlighting the complex challenges san francisco faces in its post-pandemic roadmap. >> i think one of the issues that we see here living in san francisco, there's a lot of economic and social disparities that we need to address. but this is just something that we can do as an immediate solution to sprinkle a little bit of magic during the holidays. >> the small san francisco businesses are hoping shoppers will think local this holiday

season. >> new this morning, japanese and us military divers have discovered remains and wreckage from wednesday's osprey crash off the coast of japan. un officials say five crew members remains were found. so far, only two members have been successful , fully recovered. they have not yet been identified. eight members were originally on the aircraft when it crashed last week during training. >> today, the supreme court will hear a case stemming from the opioid crisis and who is to blame for it. jobina is live with the outcome. could have implications far beyond the pharmaceutical industry. jobina. >> kumasi. the supreme court will review a $6 billion bankruptcy settlement between purdue pharma, the maker of oxycontin, and the victims affected by the opioid crisis. the deal. the deal gives purdue farmers owners the sackler family immunity, protecting them from lawsuits. attorney edward niger helped negotiate the settlement and wants it upheld. but the justice department is opposed, arguing there must be

health currently lists rsv at a 12.2% positivity rate in the state, flew at 7.4. and the cdc is listing california as one of the ten states with the highest rates of rsv and the flu. officials say while rsv is at its peak, the flu season is just getting started and it's never too late to get your shots. >> in the north bay, officials are calling a recent bird flu outbreak in petaluma the worst they've seen in sonoma county. according to the press democrat, the first case was detected last week at the reichardt duck farm. the second was detected monday at the sunrise farm site off bodega avenue. the outbreak led to more than 250,000 birds being euthanized. the owners of sunrise farms estimate their loss alone could be more than $3 million. >> today marks one week since a 90 day ban on street vendors in san francisco's mission district went into effect. this ban means vendors both with and without permits are prohibited from
