>> let us begin with major escalation in the middle east. multiple attacks on the red sea with ballistic missiles hitting commercial ships and a u.s. war ship shooting down several drones. our chief global affairs anchor martha raddatz is tracking the latest from washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this morning u.s. war ships in the red sea are on high alert after this serious and significant escalation. we're talking ballistic missiles hitting three commercial vessels in a busy shipping lane with a u.s. war ship trying to fend off more possible attacks and render aid. the attacks lasted more than seven hours. it began sunday at 9:15 a.m. a ballistic missile fired from iranian backed huttis in yemen landing near the cargo ship unity explorer. at 12 p.m. the uss carnie on patrol in the red sea when a drone launched from yemen heads towards the carnie. the navy crew shoots it down.

12:35, the unity under fire again. this time the missile strikes the ship while another drone is shot down as it heads towards the carnie. at 3:30 p.m. the cargo ship number nine struck by a ballistic missile. one hour later ballistic missile number four hits the cargo vessel sophie. again, the carnie racing to this cargo vessel to render aid as yet another drone is shot down. >> the important point here is that the huttis are playing with fire by launching this over ships. >> reporter: there were thankfully no injuries and largely minor damage to those cargo ships. but the pentagon making clear that while the attacks were launched by the huttis in yemen, they were fully enabled by iran. george? >> okay, martha. thanks. escalation in the war between israel and hamas.

the israeli military expanded its ground offensive into all parts of gaza, calling on all people to evacuate. tom soufi burridge is there. >> reporter: you should be able to hear a near constant and heavy bombardment by israeli artillery going into the gaza strip. we can even feel the reverberations from the loud explosions. this morning the idf saying ground forces are going after hamas in southern gaza, striking that area overnight. remember so many civilians have fled south seeking shelter. this morning battles raging with israeli troops now operating in southern gaza. the idf releasing new video and confirming its forces are on the ground in every area of the strip. and from the sky, relentless bombing. the idf saying they carried out around 10,000 air strikes since the start of the war. israeli missiles striking a residential building in the

south this weekend. in video circulating online. and here you get the sense of the carnage and horror after a missile strike. these boys crying for their father. hundreds of thousands of palestinians moving to the south, seeking safety there. israeli officials promising maximum effort to safeguard the civilian population. this young man crying for his brother. so many deaths emerging. unicef said nowhere is safe in gaza. there are so many young victims. >> it is a war on children. there is chaos in everything we see. >> reporter: the hamas run gaza health ministry reporting over 700 killed since the cease fire collapsed friday. more than 15,000 dead since the start of the war. the u.s. pushing israel to better target its strikes. >> we believe they have been receptive in terms of trying to minimize civilian casualties. they published online a map

where places where people could go to avoid combat and fine safety. >> reporter: with the war back home emotions running high in tev l aviv. a rally held for those still being held in gaza. 137 hostages. >> there is real determination from these people to get the remaining hostages home. >> reporter: keith sigel is one of eight americans still believed to be in captivity, his wife aviva released days ago during that week long cease fire. you want another pause in the fighting? that is the key thing for you right now? >> we want whatever needs to be done, done quickly and in our opinion that is a pause in fighting to allow keith and all the hostages to be returned. >> reporter: for now, negotiations between israel and hamas to free more hostages are off. israel now appears intent on taking control of areas in southern gaza.

with so many people packed in there, limiting civilian casualties in urban warfare will be incredibly hard. linsey? >> all right, tom. thank you. now to the deadly attack in paris. a german tourist stabbed to death and two brutally beaten not far from the eiffel tower. france's president is calling it an act of terrorism. maggie rulle is there with the latest. good morning, maggie. >> reporter: good morning. that alleged terror attack happening right by the eiffel tower here. those caught up in the terror, tourists here during the holiday season. now according to eyewitnesss a man approached a german couple asking for a cigarette. he then went on a knife attack, killing the man. police responded, chasing him across the bridge where he continued his attack, this time with a hammer, striking a british woman in the eye, injuring two more people. this video widely circulating on the internet shows police officers cornering a man with what appears to be a knife in his right hand. that alleged attacker is now in custody.

police say he is a 26-year-old french citizen. he was released from jail in 2020 after serving four years for an attempted terrorist attack. he had been under psychiatric treatment and was being tracked on a list of feared islamic radicals. we know before the attack he swore his allegiance to the islamic state. during questioning, police say the suspect quote expressed anguish about muslims dying notably in afghanistan and the palestinian territories and claimed france was an accomplice. linsey? >> maggie, obviously, this attack causes concern for a number of reasons. it comes as paris gets ready to host the summer olympic games. >> reporter: exactly, linsey. just days ago the police chief came out with a very detailed security plan. guys, this country is already on its highest alert level. many politicians are now questioning whether the government is really ready for these games. linsey? >> all right, maggie rulle for us in paris. thank you very much. robin? now to the arrest of a suspected serial killer.

a man is in custody in los angeles in the killings of three homeless men. officials say the 33-year-old is also tied to a fourth homicide in that area. kayna whitworth is in l.a. with more. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: robin, good morning. authorities here in los angeles fear there could be more victims. right now they're reaching out to all of their regional partners, asking them to review their homicide cases and see if any fit this profile. this morning officials in l.a. county say residents can breathe a sigh of relief after an alleged serial killer was tracked down. >> the individual responsible for these horrific crimes was found, caught and will now be held accountable. >> reporter: police say 33-year-old jared powell murdered someone every day for four straight days starting november 26th. none of the victims are believed to be connected. three of the men were homeless, murdered on the streets while they slept. >> it was chilling.

i have been in this work for four plus decades. >> reporter: fear gripped the city. los angeles mayor karen bass urging homeless people to seek shelter and not sleep alone. one of the victims, a husband and father of two. police say powell followed him home, robbing and murdering the 42-year-old. leaving him to die in his own garage. authorities say they traced powell by tracking his license plate and said they positively identified the handgun found in powell's car as the murder weapon. they fear there could be more victims. >> based on his criminal history, he didn't just start doing this a week ago. >> reporter: as of now, no new cases have been reported. the district attorney is reviewing this case. charges are expected in the coming days. george? >> okay, kayna, thanks. race for the white house. republican candidates are descending on iowa ahead of the first contest of the campaign season next month. rachel scott has the latest on that. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. we are just six weeks out from the iowa caucuses. florida governor ron desantis

going all in on that state, visiting all 99 counties, but he's losing ground to nikki haley and is still far behind donald trump. this morning all eyes on the hawkeye state, with just over a month until the iowa caucuses. >> we did the 99. now we need a victory. god bless. >> reporter: ron desantis reaching a milestone over the weekend, visiting all 99 counties in the state. >> we are going to win the iowa caucus and that is going to propel us to being the 47th president of the united states. >> reporter: but problems are mounting for the florida governor. tensions running high within his super pact, now moving on to its third ceo in two weeks. desantis is on the attack, as he loses ground to former south carolina governor nikki haley. >> what i would just say is she clearly is not a conservative. i think if you look at her record as south carolina governor, people can't even identify any major achievements she had. >> reporter: still, donald trump is the clear front runner, mocking his rivals at a rally this weekend. >> we hit them very hard. he's been falling out of the air like a very seriously wounded

bird, right? to the ground. >> reporter: the former president campaigning on a promise to repeal the affordable care act, also known as obama care. >> obama care is a disaster. i said we're going to do something about it. >> reporter: desantis blasting trump for not getting it done while he was in the white house. >> that was a failure. obviously under the trump administration, that was a key promise that didn't happen. >> reporter: trump wants to repeal obama care. desantis wants to replace it. but neither providing any details on what their health care plans would be. >> rachel, of course, the political calendar is vying with the legal calendar. former president trump faced a set back in court this weekend. >> reporter: exactly. trump long insisted he is immune from charges that he tried to overturn the results of the 2020 election because he was still in office. the judge overseeing that case flat out rejecting that argument, insisting that

being president does not give you a life long get out of jail free card. trump is expected to appeal that decision. >> rachel scott, thanks. linsey? now to the major airline merger. alaska airlines agreeing to buy hawaiian airlines in a deal worth nearly $2 billion. our transportation correspondent gio benitez is here with what it means for flyers. >> good morning. >> linsey, good morning. this is a very big deal for flyers of either airline. for many it came as a total surprise. these are two of america's most reliable airlines coming together after alaska airlines acquired hawaiian for $1.9 billion. both brands in continue to operate as alaska and hawaiian but will be run by one ceo and their loyalty programs is what's important, will become one in the one world alliance which means travellers will have access to more than 1,200 destinations. it is a huge win for hawaiian airlines customers who will become customers of that one world program with honolulu becoming a hub for the new combined company. the deal will take about 9 to 18 months for the merger to go

through but at the end of the day travellers with alaska or hawaiian will have more flights to choose from and more points. many are calling it a win win, guys. >> win win. gio, thank you. the uproar over the college -- i gotta pause. the college football playoff selections. for the first time an undefeated team in one of the major conferences. you can tell how i feel about it. i'm sorry. okay, will. enlighten everyone. >> this is absolute chaos. going into this weekend they called it the doomsday scenario in which there would be five teams for four spots in the college football playoff. someone would have to be on the outside looking in when the committee made its final decision. florida state stunned and furious it's them. this morning the college football playoff semifinalists have been selected. florida state shocked they're not one of them. the seminoles were a perfect 13-0 this season and won their conference championship.

first school from a power five conference with such a resume to be left home. head coach mike norvelle outraged saying i am disgusted and infuriated with the committee's decision to have what was earned on the field taken away. a season ending injury to the star quarterback jordan travis may have influenced the selection committee's decision to snub florida state. >> one of the criteria that the committee has used in the past is if a great player on your team is injured and unavailable, that can potentially affect how you're ranked. and unfortunately for florida state, their star player broke his leg in the tenth game of the year. >> reporter: travis posting on social media sunday, quote, i wish my leg broke earlier in the season so y'all could see this team is much more than the quarterback. >> to the end zone and it's caught! >> reporter: two time defending

president biden at the white house ceremony before last night's show. we have a lot more ahead including the win win for holiday shoppers. why some retailers are telling customers to keep their returns and at the same time get their money back. >> win win like you said. disturbing video of an 8-year-old wyoming boy violently taken to the ground by a school resource officer. his parents are now suing. a warning this video is difficult to watch. demarco morgan is here. >> reporter: it is tough to watch. the boy's family filing a lawsuit claiming the school officer assaulted a 2nd grader who they say is disabled and violated his rights when the officer took the boy down to the ground. this morning disturbing video of a disabled 8-year-old being pinned to the ground at his elementary school. abc news obtaining the body camera video of the school resource officer aggressively holding the 2nd grader, who goes by jd, on the ground. his father was stationed at francis warren air force base in wyoming where his school was located. his family devastated and now suing that officer.

claiming he committed a physical assault. >> cross your legs right now. cross your legs! >> reporter: watch as the sheriff locks his hands behind his back, holding him face down, causing multiple bleeding facial injuries according to the lawsuit. his family said jd is diagnosed with a neuro divergent condition. >> please let go. >> no. >> one more chance. >> no! you don't get to win this. it's all me. i should be taking you to jail! >> reporter: what led up to this february 2022 incident is still unclear but here you can see on the body camera video jd with his teacher and principal who, according to the lawsuit attempted to speak with him about comments made to the adult cashier while in the lunch room. the deputy happened to be standing there where the body camera video picks up. five minutes in the video cuts out the suit alleging the deputy deleted portions of his body cam video in an effort to conceal his wrongdoing. >> and so what we are missing

with that body camera by the officer's own admission is that it was deleted. between the period where jd is getting up, wanting to go back to his classroom and being thrown on the ground. >> reporter: abc news has attempted to reach the deputy jaqquot. no response yet. but in a statement the sheriff's department saying it was investigated by the previous sheriff and the deputy was cleared. a forensic review was completed of the body camera used in this incident. the vendor reported that camera failed thus we replaced all body worn cameras. at the end of the nearly 45 minute video, jd's father arriving to pick up his distraught son. >> this is not okay. >> reporter: the sheriff's office telling abc news the deputy is still employed however no longer assigned as a school resource officer. but 8 years old. just a little boy there. >> thank you, demarco. to new research on ozempic and alcohol. it finds it may help prevent

larger clinical trials looking at semaglutide as a treatment for aud as researchers explore whether the drug has the potential to treat other expected use conditions. and again this initial study only included six patients. as you heard more thorough studies are already under way. it could be years before we know the true results but certainly reason to hope. >> thank you very much. dr. jen is here. you know a lot about these drugs. you're board set certified in obesity medicine. what is this study telling us? >> what's interesting about this is two doctors for years who have been managing patients on the glp1 the semaglutide for weight loss including treating obesity have started reporting this. this small case study was one of the first times that reported in the literature their experience with their cravings for alcohol use, their subjective experience with that. really powerfully documented.

theories are that it works in the brain, in your reward center. this could be a major indication. >> i have to say, we know a lot of people who are taking these drugs. they report the same thing. >> absolutely, they do. >> what other treatment options are available for substance abuse disorder? >> this is one of those bright spot, that it sheds light on what treatments are already existing and how they're not being used. there were three fda approved medications for people with alcohol use disorder. they are vastly under prescribed. behavioral interventions. then tech based or app based therapies obviously increasing in popularity and research but they have a role as well. all of these thing, this isn't about just potentially choosing one. it's about you have an alcohol use disorder, substance use disorder, filling the boat and getting as much treatment as you can to make a big change in your life. >> it really seems like a miracle drug. why does there seem to be a stigma? >> social backlash, linsey, is

the pentagon says a missile launched from iranian backed huttis in yemen hit the waters near the cargo ship unity explorer. a few hours later, another missile was launched. that one hit the ship. the uss carnie, which was on patrol in the red sea tried to render aid but the carnie was also tracking drones from yemen headed in the ship's direction and ended up shooting down three altogether. meanwhile, two more commercial ships were hit by missiles. the damage to the cargo ships was, for the most part, minor and there were no injuries on any of the ships. the huttis are playing with fire in the region and the pentagon pointed the finger at iran saying they were enabling all of those strikes. robin? >> such tense time, martha. thank you. we're going to turn to the winter weather on the move here at home. ginger is tracking everything, from the new cold blast to the storm taking aim at the west. >> yes. we've got a lot to talk about. lot of snow.

we'll start in new england. maine still getting it. this is what happened over the weekend. up to 9 inches in parts of vermont. it's looking nice and holidayish but at times wet. new hampshire some video coming in shows you how that wet beautiful snow, but can also be a problem. they were concerned about power. thankfully, the wind is not high. what will come in behind that, cold. by the mid week and even thursday, that chill is moving in to the point where we feel like we're in the 20s all the way down into south carolina. then on the west side, right, vail, colorado, interstate 70 stopped at times during the weekend. some of the rockies had up to 42 inches of snow. that's just the start of what's going to go down with all of these storms blasting into the pacific northwest. some rain making it to the bay area. look at some of the high snow totals. an additional 1 to 2 feet. flood watches from up from seattle to portland. concerned about the rivers on the coastal pacific northwest. guys? >> that's all lit up, ginger. thank you. now to customers left stranded when their cruise ship company went overboard with its booking.

percocet or adderall for sale are counterfeit, made with fentanyl that is killing tens of thousands of kids and young adults like sam chapman and charlie turner. >> hi, charlie. >> hi. >> who are you? >> batman! >> reporter: charlie was three weeks away from college graduation but in may of 2020 his parents say he used snap chat to buy what he thought was a percocet. >> he was prescribed percocet after his back surgery. >> reporter: but they say it wasn't a percocet. it was a fake pill, laced with fentanyl. that night their priest coming to the door. >> they said, charlie died. i said, what do you mean charlie died? they think it's pills. pills? >> this was charlie's room? >> this was charlie's room. >> reporter: charlie died of fentanyl poisoning. the turners vowing to fight illegal pill sales on line.

but taking a unique approach, trying to work with social media companies. approaching snap chat directly. >> i think the light bulb moment for them was the deception, right? the fact that, our users are being exploited by bad actors who are deceptively marking a highly potent chemical as a safe familiar medicine. >> reporter: snap chat said it is now proactively filtering out approximately 95% of drug related content and there's an indication that it's working. they say community flags of drug content related to sales have dropped from 25% to 2%. but the progress so far not enough for dr. laura berman and her husband sam chap man. they say their 16-year-old son sammy died of fentanyl poisoning in february of 2021. >> after your kid passes, you want to find a purpose. you want to make their life worth something. >> we're doing it because we don't want any more kids to die.

every other parent that we've met is really doing it for the same reason. >> reporter: sammy's parents part of a class action lawsuit against snap chat. snap chat's head of global public policy. more than 50 families are suing snap chat. what can you tell us about that litigation? >> my heart goes out to those families and to any family that has suffered really what is an unimaginable loss. for our work at snap, we deploy technologies and tools and created new products that we think will really be effective in combatting this problem. >> reporter: she says snap is taking action. >> an account is flagged as being an account looking to sell drugs that is immediately removed. the content is deleted. the account is then investigated. >> reporter: uc san diego researcher timothy mackey said the dealers use all the platforms, not just snap chat. >> they'll use instagram to get as many messages as they can out. that's their marketing tool.

they may use a telegram account to have a channel where people, as a group, talk about drug, sell drugs. >> reporter: while measures to target drug sales online have been raised in congress. >> i would demand that the federal government and congress pass laws to very explicitly make sure this content is taken down and that there are penalties if those actions aren't taken. >> reporter: the turners say they're educating teens about the dangers of pills, both in schools and through social media. >> i keep saying to myself, what would charli and to help save lives. >> meta says the sale of drugs on their platform is not allowed and they're doing their part to fight back against this practice . telegram says they actively monitor the public parts of their app and that this is against their terms of service. but for parents watching this,

or holiday cooking, baking time? >> softened unsalted butter makes the world of difference in a cookie. makes it soft, fluffy, airy. you cannot use melted butter. can't use cold butter. softened unsalted butter. >> how long can you keep butter on the counter safely? >> i may do the wrong thing. i say 24 hours. i keep my butter out. >> i have done a few days. when it starts smelling weird i get rid of it. >> what kind of cookies are you making? >> i'm doing a peppermint mocha crinkle cookie. >> we are doing? >> a gingerbread sandwich cookie. so it's like a childhood favorite, but with ginger. >> all right. let's get to it. sandwich cookies with egg nog filling. gingerbread cookie egg nog filling. how do you get the egg nog flavor? >> you use egg nog in the frosting, in the butter cream. >> it's really in there? >> it's in there.

you can definitely taste it. >> virgin eggnog. >> yes, virgin eggnog. we are going to start with our dry ingredients. since we only have a few minutes, we're going to tag team and do this together. i'm going to start with the dry. the second tip i would like to share is you should spoon your flour into your measuring cup. yes, yes. it gives you -- they are so smart. they were cool. >> you guys can try it. you can try the first cookie. if you want to. you really have to process. >> you have to go for the win. i got some extra money, too. [ laughter ] no, no. >> no money involved. no dough. >> we're spooning in our flour. you come over here and add your spices into the flour. some ginger, some freshly greated nutmeg, baking soda. you mix that in there. >> how do you get your ginger bread cookie soft? these cookies were soft? >> it's the softened butter. you mix that together.

just turn it on. >> i'm trying. >> there we go. >> just beat that until it's fluffy. turn it off. add in light brown sugar. that also helps moisten those cookies as well. one egg. and ginger bread cookies would not be ginger bread cookies without molasses. add that molasses. yeah, baby. after you mix that together you're going to combine the dry with the wet. what you get is this. >> magic of television. >> exactly. you scoop it, roll it into your hand. i also like to use nonstick cooking spray to help shape those balls. >> i do that, too. >> soften them down. bake them off at 350 for about eight to ten minutes. if you like them extra gooey. get your frosting here. >> any tricks for frosten?

>> also using room temp butter. room temp butter. little powdered sugar, eggnog. for adults you can use an extract if you're feeling boozey. >> they don't need it. i have to say they're so good. >> exactly. >> i said i wouldn't have one and i completely had one. >> a pinch of salt balances out that sweetness in there. after you put all of those together. you have this. >> this is fantastic. i told you i did it. guys, we're going to give you the recipe. i promise you, you do want this one. can i get a quick look from the kid judges? don't say which is better but how do you like the ginger bread sandwich? >> it's amazing. >> amazing. >> good. >> start eating this peppermint mocha. on to crinkle. start eating that. ashley, you have melted chocolate action in the dough. how do you melt the chocolate? >> i have three different types of chocolate. this is peppermint mocha crinkle cookie.

it is full of my favorite flavors. chocolate and peppermint. my favorite baking tip any time you're baking is read your read it all the way through. you don't want any surprises. >> that's great advice. >> we set everything out. here we're going to start just like kardea did. we are going to start with creamy room temp butter with some granulated sugar. >> how much? >> dump all of it in. half stick of butter. eggs go in after. then add the eggs one at a time. while you're doing that. >> uh-oh. >> these things are tricky. that was the eject button. there we go. wait. do you know what? [ talking at the same time ] eggs vanilla peppermint. we have our cocoa powder all purpose.

little bit of instant expresso powder. >> oh. >> you don't really taste the coffee but it gives it a little dust of flavor, makes it more interesting. baking powder to get that nice fluffy soft cookie. little salt. that will get mixed together. we add our melted chocolate in this step. >> okay. >> mix it all together let it sit for an hour so it's a nice scoopable dough. >> three different forms of chocolate. >> white chocolate, melted chocolate and cocoa powder. >> what do we sprinkle on the top at the end? >> we roll this all the way in powdered sugar. you bake it. as it bakes the outer crust gets nice and crispy. then the middle gooey inside. that's where you get that crinkle effect. >> this is amazing. >> judges, what do you think?
