businesses than anyone else. learn how you can get $1000 back for your business. call or go online today. make it comfortable for them to pitch a tent on our sidewalks and stay from crime to drugs to the homeless district attorney brooke jenkins, mayor london breed and police chief bill scott addressing some of the city's most pressing issues. >> and san francisco could become the latest city to pick a side in the israel-hamas conflict. the resolution being considered later today. but first, though, let's talk about this morning. >> fog. it was definitely an issue yesterday morning for commuters and people trying to fly. the fog is back again today.
5:01 am
>> good morning. it's monday, december fifth. thank you all for being with us. >> what day is it? it's tuesday, girl. >> oh, it is tuesday. tuesday oh, my goodness. that's all right. that. >> that's okay. it was in there. it was in there? >> yeah. >> we have to check sometimes tuesday and we are awake with you bright and early. >> we are awake, but it feels like the same day because it's more fog. >> yeah. and the fog is going to last for much of the morning. so we're going to have a lot of issues over the next couple of hours trying to see out there. here's our rooftop camera at kgo this morning. you can clearly see the thick fog that has settled in here right now. so dense fog advisory encompasses much of the bay area. this is going to last until 11 a.m. so this fog is going to stick around for quite some time. look at visibility. see, most of the region is dealing with that very low cloud cover. some areas down to zero miles. visibility like san carlos. we're having issues in oakland, napa, santa rosa, down to a quarter of a mile. look at sfo right now down to an eighth of a mile. visibility we don't have any strong winds out
5:02 am
there to really mix out this fog quickly. so future weather showing you the fog forecast out through 930. we still have those pockets of fog around the bay shoreline. it's not until about lunchtime that the fog really breaks down for sunshine and it's a pretty pleasant afternoon later on today with bright skies and warm temperatures, we do have some rain coming our way. tomorrow. we'll talk about that in eight minutes. let's check in with jobina and see how the roads are doing with all this fog. this morning. >> drew, it is a mess. i can speak for myself coming out of oakland this morning. once you hit the toll actually before the toll plaza, the maze is very scary. it is so dark through that area. the fog is thick. we have fog advisories issued by the chp for the bay bridge, also the san mateo bridge, which is where we'll bring in this live picture. you can hardly make out the tail lights traveling towards the peninsula on the westbound direction. there's fog advisories also for the golden gate bridge and i believe the dumbarton bridge. so heads up here. there's also fog all around the carquinez bridge that will impact you. and also there's roadwork through this area. so it's really slowing
5:03 am
down speeds here. you can see there around 11mph. as you can continue further south, which would be the westbound direction on 80. and we want to toss it over to abc7 news reporter ryan curry who is out there on the roads right now. and ryan, what are you seeing? >> well, gina, we're not really seeing much of anything right now. the fog is really that thick, especially in the parts of the east bay as you make your way closer to san francisco and some of these bridges as you cross out on that side of the bay. let's give you a look at what what it looks like right now. this is 580. we're really taking it just one street light at a time. that's kind of the way we're measuring this thickness of the fog right now. you can see just a few of them. but they're really more just light shadows and the thickness of this fog and of course, you can see the red taillights of the cars that are in front of us . they also really are just mere red shadows because it's that thick. and when they obviously hit their brakes, you can see it light up a little bit more, more
5:04 am
so that's why we're trying to keep ourselves a little bit of a safe distance because it's a little bit difficult to see from where we are right now. tail lights, keep that in mind because if you are that close to your car in front of you, that means that you are very close in the thickness of this fog. so giving yourself that extra distance is probably the best thing to do, right now, especially if you are on the road this early in the morning because it's still dark out. the sun's not up and it won't be up for a little bit while of course we did also see this yesterday. oakland airport had a ton of delays. we counted about 90 delays, some going both inbound and outbound. a lot of that creating a mess for a lot of those travelers hitting around those areas. we spoke with a couple of them who said the fog really did impact them. >> we actually tried to land here in oakland first and the pilot pulled out to say, nope, can't do it. and then we tried san francisco and they got rerouted to san jose. >> now, those morning flights are just about to get underway
5:05 am
at oakland airport once again. and as we just checked the website moments ago, there are no delays reported yet. then again, they are just about to get underway here at the airport. that's oakland. we're talking about checking san francisco as well. it's the same thing. there's no delays reported as of quite yet. but again, that morning rush is just getting underway. so we're going to keep monitoring that because, again, this fog is extremely thick and driving on it is definitely something you want to take caution for. so if you're also going to the airport, you've got to make sure you check your flight status because as this morning goes on, it's going to be one where you have to monitor to see if there's any more delays coming out of that. but for now, i'll send it back to you guys. >> why can't we have the homeless problem cleaned up? what are we doing to ensure that future generations are able to stay in the city that they love? >> show of hands. how many of you have been broken into your business? your home, your car? that's actually more hands in front of a crowd of abc seven viewers. >> san francisco's top city officials addressed the biggest
5:06 am
concerns facing people living and working in the city. last night, abc seven news hosted take action san francisco, a town hall conversation on to tackle some of the city's most pressing issues. mayor london breed police chief bill scott and district attorney brooke jenkins. all took to the stage to answer direct questions about the city's challenges and what it means for the future of the city. >> from drugs to crime, homelessness and empty downtown, our city officials weighed in on all of that. abc seven news anchor karina nova shows us some of the discussion highlights. >> let's start with the drug crisis this year through october 31st, 692 people have died from accidental overdoses on pace to be the deadliest year yet. mayor london breed responded with the actions currently in place to prevent future overdose deaths. >> how can we ensure that these numbers go down? >> we are not only making arrests for those who are dealing drugs on our streets, we're making arrests of people
5:07 am
who are using drugs with the hopes of trying to get people into treatment, moving on to crime videos we've all seen of car break-ins and retail theft anchor reggie aqui pulled the audience on who's been impacted by one of these types of crimes. >> most people raise their hands. here was his question for the police chief. when the city asks san francisco residents to give the city a grade when it came to how safe a city we are, they gave it a c plus, i'm wondering how are you going to raise that grade next year? >> we have reduced car break ins from that point to now 50. >> i think our strategies, our bait cars, our surveillance operations, the visibility in the right places at the right time, all those things are working and most importantly, i think we arresting the right people. but, you know, those show of hands, i mean, i can add my hand to that list. i know somebody and it's happened to me. so i understand this very
5:08 am
well as from every perspective. but we are we are going in a positive direction when we talk about property crime, thefts, retail thefts, they're down. they're down statistically. and, you know, i'll put in a caveat that not everybody reports everything. we understand that. >> the other big topic, homelessness, 5% of the city's budget is going into solving the problem. here's a question posed by an audience member about cleaning up the streets. you did great things with great things with dreamforce, and we're kind of thinking, why can't we have, you know, the homeless problem cleaned up all the time? >> like we have in those two events? >> what we are doing is being as aggressive as we can on to get people off the streets and give them, you know, an ultimatum. it's either you are going to accept the help that we're offering or we're going to have to move you from this sidewalk. >> half of the homeless population in san francisco just basically says, i don't care how many times you come out and see
5:09 am
me this, i don't want to go. what's the recourse if we cannot make it comfortable for them to pitch a tent on our sidewalks and stay? >> and so that's the theory of being able to now respond and say, you have been offered shelter. you have refused it. now you must move. >> and what about our downtown recovery? all those empty buildings, the san francisco office vacancy rate is now above 30. more than 3,000,000ft■!s of retail space is vacant. mayor breed says she has a plan for that, which includes moving in artificial intelligence companies. >> i hear you say i a lot and that gets me concerned. again because i think here we go again, putting our eggs in one basket. and i famously is about getting rid of people. >> but is i but you also heard me talk about a soccer stadium. you also heard me talk about university of california, berkeley or other universities that are looking for housing and class room space and lab space. we need to give downtown a lot more attention because of what it generates for our city's
5:10 am
budget in order to help run the city. in the first place. >> such a robust conversation. if you missed the town hall, you can still watch it. the take action event is available right now on the abc7 bay area streaming app. you can find it wherever you stream and the full conversation will be airing again on abc7 this saturday starting at 9 p.m. and then sunday at 6 p.m. today. >> san francisco supervisor dean preston is expected to introduce a resolution calling for a sustained cease fire in gaza. his office tells abc seven news the resolution will also condemn anti-semitic as well as islamic phobic rhetoric and attacks. according to our media partners at the san francisco standard, multiple supervisors are concerned about the idea, saying it would take time and attention away from their work here at home. >> new developments in the expanding war in gaza. we are getting a better sense of just how long israel's intense bombing campaign against hamas could last. jobina is live with
5:11 am
what israel's defense minister is saying about the war. jobina >> thank you, kumasi israel's defense minister sat down with abc news off camera. he says he believes the war in its current intensity will last at least another two months. he says israeli military leaders increasingly concede that killing all of hamas's estimated 30,000 fighters will be impossible. he also says their goal is to, quote, break the chain of command, having already killed 40% of battalion leaders, up to 600 americans are still inside gaza. israel is dropping leaflets urging people to move to designated safe zones. the country says it will only consider another pause if the fighting in the fighting if hamas returns, the 15 women excuse me, and two children still in its custody. a state department official suggests hamas is holding those women out of fear for what they may reveal about sexual violence they have
5:12 am
suffered a reason this pause fell apart is they don't want those women to be able to talk about what happened to them during their time in custody. phone and internet service went down again in the chaos for civilians. and we've been following the beginning of the war. you can find the latest updates anytime at abc7 news.com and download the abc7 bay area app to get breaking news alerts and live stream updates. hey drew. hey drew being 512 this morning and it's all about that thick fog that is going to last here until about lunchtime today. >> so visibility in a lot of spots is less than a quarter of a mile. some areas, we're down to zero miles. visibility tsay. good idea. slow it down. this morning. use those low beams, extra distance while you're driving because we have this fog settling into much of the region. that dense fog advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. this morning for really good reason. sfo is down to an eighth of a mile. visibility a quarter of a mile in oakland. the same story
5:13 am
in napa, petaluma, san carlos right now around a zero mile. so we do have thick fog along the peninsula as well. in fact, take a look. this is our abc7 oakland airport camera. the only reason you can probably tell there's any aircraft on the screen, the blinking lights, that's how thick the fog is right now and we'll keep that fog in the forecast through 11 a.m. the fog thins out by lunchtime and it turns out to be a pretty pleasant afternoon today. we expect a lot of sunshine by 4 p.m. and temperatures on the mild side in the 60s and in the 70. so dense morning fog giving way to sunshine. but then we do introduce the storm impact scale tomorrow. so wednesday, we are expecting rain. we'll go hour by hour on future weather. this storm coming our way tomorrow in about nine minutes. but we'll be right back. >> thank you, drew. and targeting tesla's launch of the cybertruck. coming up, what we're learning from the, quote, mass casualty plot foiled by authorities in texas. plus. my goodness. >> a dramatic scene near

5:20 am
still lingering through about 1030. it's after 11 a.m. you can see that fog finally evaporates and it leads to a pleasant afternoon. we actually had a lot of sunshine by two, 3 p.m. and temperatures on the mild side in the mid 60s, if not low 70s in some spots still have that beach hazard statement in effect through this evening for the increased risk of sneaker waves overnight tonight, it looks like we will do this again with the fog temperatures in the 40s and in the 50s. but rain is in the forecast live. doppler seven along with satellite. this cold front, it's going to move through here tomorrow right around lunchtime for most of us on the abc7 storm impact scale is a level one light storm on wednesday for light to moderate rain and occasional downpours. here's future weather tomorrow morning. we'll start out with fog leading to wetter conditions later on in the north bay. the first area to see the rain. then midday, it's moving through the heart of the region. then into the afternoon, we'll see those on and off showers. so we do expect about a 10th to a half of an inch of rain through tomorrow evening. here's the accuweather

5:32 am
the fog will lift for bright sunshine and actually a pleasant afternoon. temperatures later today going into the mid 60s, if not the low 70s. that's your forecast. let's see how we're doing on those roads with the fog and jobina. good morning. >> good morning, drew. thank you. hi, everyone. so we're going to zoom in on the map quickly to the carquinas bridge because you're facing a slowdown on top of the fog and it's because of that low visibility that drew was just discussing. your speeds will be around 16mph there in the westbound direction . some live pictures outside for you. so you can see the impact to the commute. this is emeryville showing you 80 those headlights that are really just looking like little dots of glow coming through the fog or traveling in the westbound direction. and then this is in oakland or 8-80 at the coliseum camera. those headlights traveling south bound. it is difficult to see through this area. and at last check i heard abc7 news reporter ryan curry was traveling on 8-80. so let's check in with him and see where he is now. hi ryan and jobina. >> good morning. we actually just left 8-80 got on 92. we're on our way to go check out the
5:33 am
san mateo bridge because we hear that's actually one of the worst spots right now when it comes to this patchy fog. what i can say about 8-80, though, if you're on that road and that's a little hit or miss in terms of the fog, it's either really thick in some spots or it's not that bad at all. where we were just leaving on 292, visibility was totally fine. but if you're closer to oakland, it's actually really thick. you want to be careful about that. so let's take a look at 92. this is on your way to the san mateo bridge. as you can see, very dark, very dim. not a whole lot. you can really see, obviously, you can make out the red car, red lights in front of us from the cars that are right in front of us. and we are slowly getting to the toll plaza. you can even barely see that sign that telling you about the toll plaza because the fog is so thick, so just keep that in mind if you are driving out on the road because it is very difficult to kind of gauge where you are at, especially with some of the cars in front of you. obviously, you know the cars that are right in front of us
5:34 am
and the ones that are right next to us. but for those that are further up, up the road, it's difficult to kind of gauge really how far in front of it is. so taking it slow is probably the best way you can stay safe when you're out on the roads this morning. one thing we should also note is that the airports were keeping an eye on those because those yesterday were not in the best shape, especially oakland airport. so many delays coming out of there. passengers telling us that their flights were delayed for hours, some even sitting on the tarmac for hours. we counted about 90 delays, some going inbound and some going outbound. passengers saying they had to wait for hours just to even take off. >> i want to say about a good four hours, we sat on the plane for four hours, four hours. >> and they wouldn't let you off. >> you could at your own risk, but i don't want to take a risk. so a lot of us just sat there and a quick look at the airports today. >> we were just checking oakland. it seems like all things are going fine there right now. not seeing many delays for these early morning flights. same thing with san francisco airport as well.
5:35 am
everything seems to be going smoothly there. some flights are even listed as departing as we speak. so that's good news if anybody is trying to plan their flights this morning, obviously, you want to keep that in mind if you are heading to the airport just to kind of keep checking your flight status. but i do also kind of want to show you this is we're now making our way onto to the san mateo bridge. and you can just see, i mean, it's difficult to see really anything. we're gauging it kind of one streetlight as a time almost. but you can see they're kind of just fading in to our shot because the fog is so thick. and obviously, the cars in front of us as well, it's so difficult to kind of make out. so just keep an eye on that. if you're out on the roads this morning and just give yourself some extra time because it is thick. if you are heading out on some of these bridges. but for now, i'll send it back to you guys. >> thank you, ryan. happening today, faculty union members are set to strike at san francisco state university. organizers say more than 1500 members will be joining the picket line and this is the second in a string of four one day strikes planned at
