>> civilians who fled south now find themselves with nowhere to go. our foreign correspondent james longman is on the ground in israel. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, michael. i'm at an artillery position about two miles away from gaza. you can see soldiers there racking up ammunition, the shells ready to be fired out. israel is refocusing from the north to the south of gaza. that is where palestinians were told to go for safety. some 80% of all those inside gaza have now been displaced. that's 1.9 million people. there's now almost nowhere to go in gaza that's safe. they were told to go south. but as israel revs up its operations in southern gaza, the fighting is inescapable. this family, including young boys, running from gun fire from what was supposed to be an evacuation route. there's no end in sight. israel's defense minister telling abc news he believes the war in its current intensity will last at least through the

end of the year. he says israeli military increasingly concedes that killing all of hamas 30,000 fighters will be impossible, adding their goal is to break the chain of command. they say they've now killed 40% of battalion leaders. these images show israeli military vehicles staging in southern gaza where many civilians were told to flee to safety. after weeks of promise of safety in the south, the idf dropping leaflets telling those to evacuate to safe zones marked on a map published online. but with little electricity and power, access to these maps will be difficult. safe zone is a false narrative. a dangerous narrative. people don't have the transport. they don't know where they're meant to go. >> reporter: up to 600 americans are still inside gaza. >> people are sheltering together so there will be 20, 30 people all together and there's not enough food. >> reporter: israel insists they are warning people.

u.s. security officials say this is not typical in combat. >> they have actually taken the quite unusual step for a modern military and identified precisely the area they intend to have ground maneuver. they have asked the people in that area to move out. >> reporter: our producer told to move his family for the 17th time since the war began. >> they are really scary. we don't know what to do. we are displaced from one to another trying to protect my family as much as i can. >> reporter: 2-month-old abnan injured in strikes. he was born just the second day of this war. air strikes destroying this orphanage. >> we can't turn away from what is evidently a moral failure in the face of the international community. >> reporter: this as growing pressures of both sides to return to the negotiating table with those 122 hostages still in gaza. now the intensity of the

fighting in the south is now putting aid at risk. only 100 trucks got in yesterday. that's well below the number in the days previous. and thousands of gazans are camped out close to that border with egypt, hoping for some safety. george? >> thank you very much. let's get more on this from mary bruce. mary, the administration increasingly concerned this humanitarian crisis could turn into a calamity for israel. >> reporter: exactly, george. and the white house is ramping up the pressure on israel now to do more to protect civilians, protect civilian lives. the white house said they do think israel is getting that message. but when i had pressed officials here on whether sharing these leaflets with evacuation zone, whether that's enough. whether israel can be more targeted in their attacks, given now they are trying to squeeze so many palestinian civilians into such a small area. george, national security adviser telling me it is simply too soon to tell. >> lingering concerns over a wider war with iran. >> reporter: we know this is a

top priority. the white house deeply concerned about this spiralling into a wider war especially as they continue to see iranian backed militants launching attacks in the region. the white house is vowing to take appropriate action, as they say, in response to the latest houthi missile and drone strike in the red sea over the weekend. so far the u.s. efforts to retaliate have not deterred them. the white house is considering launching a multinational task force to try and escort commercial ships and give them some protection in the red sea. ultimately, they have made it clear, iran is responsible for this. officials saying while these militants are the ones pulling the trigger, iran is supplying the guns. ultimately, they are behind all this, george. >> mary bruce, thanks. the white house warning ukraine's forces are running out of time and money. senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is tracking that story. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is an urgent and blunt message from the white house to congressional leader, warning they are out of money and nearly out of time to provide additional aid to ukraine.

right now there is no clear path forward and the pressure is on. in just a few hours, ukrainian president zelenskyy will address senators virtually behind closed doors. he will make yet another personal plea for support. lawmakers have been at a stale mate for weeks. republicans say they will not provide additional aid to ukraine unless democrats agree to crack down on the border. talks on that issue are not go well. senate negotiations over a possible border passage suddenly broke down over the weekend. house speaker mike johnson is accusing the biden administration for failing to address their concerns about strategy and accountability for ukraine. both sides are still at the table. the white house is clearly worried that these negotiations will drag on for far too long. they insist any delay in funding would kneecap ukraine on the battlefield. they say this is not a problem for next year, that congress must act now. >> lot of problems there. rachel, thank you very much. turning to the powerful storm slamming the pacific northwest bringing heavy rain and snow, as well as avalanche and flooding dangers. ginger is tracking it all.

good morning, ginger. >> good morning to you, michael. several cities in washington and oregon are going into this event 5 to 12 inches below average. it's falling fast. parade of storms, the worst of them today. you can see that swollen river, that's johnson creek outside portland. rescuers were looking for a man who allegedly fell in. they did not find anybody. apparently he was holding on to a cushion at one point. i am sure they will try to wrap up that rescue today. it is going to be wet as they do so. eureka up to seattle in those flood watches. that's mostly for those swollen rivers. we also have avalanche watch, high wind warnings for up to 75 miles per hour in montana. michael? >> a lot going on. how long is this going to last, ginger? >> that's the problem. this round is today into early tomorrow. then it's not done after that. the heavy rain pushes through. this is a warm one so even into the foot hills of the mountains. storm two. storm three, you will be blasted thursday and then again saturday. that's where the snow elevations bring snow instead of rain by

the weekend. either way, you could end up with an additional 4 to 6 inches, linsey. >> all right, ginger, thank you. now to the home explosion in arlington, virginia. police say they were executing a search warrant when a suspect inside the home fired shots immediately before the blast. ike ejiochi is on the scene for us. good morning, ike. >> reporter: good morning, linsey. that's right. we're in that arlington, virginia, neighborhood where that massive explosion took place. there's still a large police presence surrounding this area as well as many community members out and about who tell us they felt the concussion from that blast from inside their homes all throughout this neighborhood. this virginia home reduced to rubble, debris showering the neighborhood, even smashing the windows of this police car. >> you could feel the sound concussion. >> reporter: early monday evening arlington county police officers arrived on the scene. investigators say the suspect discharged a flare gun 30 to 40 times. police attempted to execute a search warrant, but the suspect

would not come out. that's when officials say several rounds were discharged from what they believed to be a firearm from inside the home. at approximately 8:25 p.m., the residence exploded. police are still investigating the circumstances behind the blast. emergency crews rushing to the scene to contain the fire. several homes nearby were evacuated. residents describing the blast. >> i was laying in my bed and then just, it felt like we got attacked. i got pushed forward. my roommates and i ran out and we looked outside and the fire was just getting going. >> reporter: several videos of the after math show plumes of orange fire and smoke filling the night sky for hours. investigators are working to confirm if the suspect was alone at the time of the explosion. arlington police say officers on scene self-reported minor injuries, and no one was transported to the hospital. now, this location is close to a

number of schools, and we're being told their normal operations are resuming today. and again, we still don't know why the suspect was firing those flares from inside the home in the first place. >> okay, ike. thank you very much. now to the deadly stabbing at macy's in philadelphia. a security guard was killed and another wounded at the peak of the holiday shopping season. stephanie ramos is on the scene in philadelphia. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: george, good morning. the deadly altercation happened at this macy's department store when two guards trying to do their jobs were attacked. >> it happened at macy's. >> reporter: this morning a man is in custody after a deadly altercation at this busy philadelphia macy's store. >> people trying to shop and be joyful and happy, and stuff like this happens. you just got to be careful. >> reporter: a security guard approached the man attempting to steal multiple hats. the man leaving the area, but police say he returned 15 minutes later to confront two guards. >> there was a second security guard trying to save the first

guard that was stabbed, and that security guard sustained several stab wounds as well. >> reporter: authorities say the security guards were not armed. both were rushed to the hospital. the 30-year-old guard later dying from his injuries. the suspect running from the scene. authorities say he was apprehended moments later at a train station. this comes as retail theft is on the rise across the country, with smash and grabs becoming a common sight. the retail industry losing more than $100 billion in 2022 according to the national retail federation. macy's said in a statement that the security and safety of their customers and colleagues is their top priority. this location remains temporarily closed. this is still an active investigation, michael. >> sad there, stephanie. thank you very much. now to the former american ambassador, accused of working as a secret agent for cuba for more than four decades while serving in the state department and on the national security council.

our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the latest. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: michael, good morning. these allegations read like something out of a cold war james bond movie. this case potentially is one of the worst security breaches in recent history. manuel rocha had impeccable credentials serving as a u.s. ambassador to one point working at the national security council. but today he stands accused of being a secret agent, a mole for communist cuba, much of it during the regime of fidel castro. last year the fbi became suspicious of rocha. they say an under cover agent was to meet him in miami. rocha, who is 73 and retired quickly agreed and allegedly was confirming he had been working for the cuban intelligence service. the fbi recorded him allegedly describing how meticulous he was in becoming a double agent, allegedly bragging about what he had done.

make sure your gifts get there on time. that's all coming up. >> all right. thank you, linsey. now to the american woman killed in a shark attack in a popular bahamas resort. vitor oquendo joins with us the story. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, michael. a life guard saw what was happening and raced to the woman who was nearly a mile off shore, tried performing cpr but she tragically died from her injuries. now authorities in the bahamas are investigating. this morning tragedy in paradise. an american tourist killed by a shark in the bahamas. police say the victim, a 44-year-old woman from boston, was paddle boarding near the popular sandals resort when a shark attacked. >> the life guard on duty saw what was happening. went out in a rescue boat, retrieved the victim along with a male relative and brought them to safety. >> reporter: it happened monday about 3/4 of a mile from the beach in new providence. >> she sustained injury to the

right side of her body. >> reporter: sandals saying we are deeply saddened by the passing of a guest and are providing as much support as possible during this difficult time. shark attacks are rare but most in the caribbean occur in the bahamas. >> one of the hypothesis is that sharks mistake us as prey. the other possibility that we always have to consider is the shark feels threatened. we don't know what it takes to threaten a big shark. >> reporter: experts also stress that while we bear risk every time we go in the ocean, the chances of being attacked by a shark are incredibly low. guys? >> all right, victor. thank you. we turn to jamie foxx. the oscar winner made his first public appearance after being hospitalized. demarco morgan is here with his story. >> what a moment it was. the actor at one point fighting back tears at the beginning of his acceptance speech expressing gratitude for his life as it is now and at times still doing what he does best, bringing the laughs.

that went dangerously wrong. this morning heart stopping video of the so called prom posal on a school campus gone terribly wrong. the city and school district in chandler, arizona, now facing the prospect of a million dollar lawsuit. >> it's just heart breaking even to watch that video because in any instant he could have passed away. >> reporter: you can see a porshe driven, police say, by a student. his girlfriend in the passenger seat barrelling through a stop sign into a motorcycle. the rider 18-year-old william, thrown into the air plummeting to the ground. >> okay. can you move your leg at all? >> reporter: the crash so intense, the air bags of the car deployed. >> you can tell in the video the student wasn't going 15 miles per hour in the school zone. you can tell he was going way faster. that was very shocking to us. he told us that when he got hit, he let out the most blood curdling scream ever. >> are you okay?

>> reporter: now filing a notice of claim against the school district and the city, stating the student driving the porshe had permission from the school resource officer and principal to run a stop sign in the school parking lot as part of the student's plan to ask a girl to an upcoming school dance. the notice of claim saying the officer would pretend the driver was in trouble for running the stop sign. the driver would then pull out a poster asking his girlfriend to prom. >> private property accident. minimum injuries. >> i was supposed to go through the stop sign. that was the thing. >> we'll talk about that later. it's private property so you won't get any ticket or anything like that. >> reporter: the principal, seen in that school resource officer's patrol car moments after the crash. the officer stating in a police report the principle had approached the car to discuss a parent issue involving a separate incident and the officer told them he was helping a student in a prom proposal.

in the report the officer stated the plan was for the driver to roll the stop sign but instead the driver drove toward the stop sign at a high rate of speed and did not look both ways nor slow down. the district telling abc news it is unable to comment, as this is a pending legal matter. and the student's attorney said he has injuries including brain trauma. his lawyer saying he plans to file separate action against the driver. the father of that driver telling abc news this is very unfortunate and i have no further comment at this point. scary situation, you guys. >> scary situation indeed. thank you, erielle. coming up, erielle will be back with the debate causing some family friction. why some boomer grandparents are pushing back when it comes to helping out with child care. and next a new twist in the blindside saga. the tuohy family now accusing michael oher of extorting them. we'll be right back.

they say he sent them allegedly demanding millions he believed he was owed saying he would expose them to the world. >> okay, tuohy family. big smile, everyone. >> reporter: this morning the latest twist in the real life blindside battle. new court filings on behalf of the tuohy family hitting back against the man they say they treated like a son. >> i would like to become a legal guardian. >> lord, help that child. >> reporter: sean and leann tuohy claim to have text messages they say are between them and former nfl star michael oher, inspiration behind the oscar winning film that allegedly show oher demanding they pay him millions. tuohy alleges oher wrote it was $10 million, now i want $15 million after taxes adding, think how it will look when this comes out. in another message the tuohies allege oher wrote, if something isn't resolved this friday, i'm going to tell the world how i was robbed by my supposed to be parents. that's the deadline. >> we're not gonna be strong

armed. we haven't done anything. >> you're changing that boy's life. >> no, he's changing mine. >> reporter: oher claims the tuohys, who raised him since high school, took advantage of him, turning his life story into a bankable script and depriving him of millions, claims the tuohys deny. they say any money from the movie was divided equally to each family member, including oher, and that he received a little more than $138,000 over ten payments. >> reality is this case may end up in a trial. and a judge or a juror may actually be making the determination about what amount, if any, the tuohys have made. >> reporter: the 37-year-old oher first made headlines this summer, alleging that when he was 18, the tuohys tricked him into signing what he thought were adoption paper, but instead he ended up being a conservatorship, which gave the tuohys control over his finances.

presidents of harvard, mit and university of pennsylvania will testify before the house education committee this morning after backlash over their school's response to anti-semitism. republican chair woman virginia fox has accused college administrators of letting horrific rhetoric to fester and grow as that war rages on in israel. college campuses have seen an increase in anti-semitism. university of pennsylvania was vandalized with anti-semitic messages. a cornell student was charged with making threats against the jewish community in an online forum and protests have erupted across campuses across the nation. the universities have condemned the attacks, but it is worth noting the department of education has launched an investigation into several schools after receiving complaints about incidents of anti-semitism, linsey. >> thank you. now to the christmas rush to get presents sent out on time. ship rates are around 5% more than last year. but there are some ways that you

parent, many are hoping for help with kids. but some boomer grandparents say they already have full schedules of their own. the latest generational divide causing friction for some families. but experts say there is room for empathy and compromise. it's the time of the year when many families bring the generations together in celebration. >> okay, everybody smile! say baby! >> reporter: but this morning, some millennials say they're feeling abandoned by their boomer parents when it comes to the challenge of child care. >> i think at times i dreamed a little bit like the movies, where the family unit would be around and parents and grandparents would hold the children and baby-sit. >> reporter: california mom of two leslie dawson says she always imagined having her father ted nearby to help raise her family. but that dream never materialized. >> my dad lives in mexico a lot of the year, so we have a lot of face-time and phone calls.

the kids love grandpa, but grandpa doesn't come to the soccer games. >> reporter: the 71-year-old decided to spend his golden years in a retirement community in mexico, saying he earned his respite after decades of caring for his own children. >> i do feel a little guilty that i'm not present with the kids, you know, in a personal in person relationship. but i think like a lot of people of my generation, we do feel a financial responsibility. >> reporter: the dawsons aren't alone. according to the cdc, on average millennials are delaying parenthood until later than previous generations meaning their baby boomer parents are becoming grands later than grandparents who came before them. experts say they may not want to devote those later years to child care. >> we get disappointed and maybe even carry an offense or ask for forgiveness or bitterness which can cause a root for conflict. >> reporter: try to see things from each other's perspective. >> i think that helps build

empathy. i think it helps us be a little more compassionate, less harsh and approach it in a way that helps. >> reporter: it can be hard to reconcile the boomer been there done that philosophy with millennial entitlement. experts say communication and managing expectations are key here. as for leslie and her dad, they both say if she really needed him, he would jump on an airplane immediately. sort of like you want your parents to want to watch your kids, but that's not always the case. billie elish performed for the crowd. heard it was quite a night. hollywood back out in full force. also this morning kim kardashian is gearing up to star in her own scripted series. a legal drama produced by ryan murphy. kardashian had a role in murphy's american horror story. she must have impressed him. she is set to play los angeles' most successful divorce lawyer and owner of an all female law firm in the new drama being described as high end and glossy. kim's law studies will come in handy as she, murphy and kim's mom, kris jenner, executive produced the show. the work never stops for the kardashians, as we all know. kim also gearing up to produce and star in an upcoming comedy for netflix. this is called "the fifth wheel." she will play the outsider in a group of four female friends. there was a bidding war for this one. no word yet on when it will come out on netflix. she's on fire. >> unbelievable.

it was considered uninteresting. >> you read her diary. >> i did, yes. it is enormous. all of these are my notes. i did, i read her diary slowly over the course of the three years that i wrote this. >> ariel said she stumbled across martha's story in 2008 at an unusual place, at her doctor's office. >> i read all the magazines in the office. there was nothing left except this small devotional book. talks about martha ballard. all of the hairs stood up on the back of my neck and i thought, that would make a great novel. she was also really progressive for her time, the fact that she could read, she could speak up when women weren't supposed to speak period. >> because she was a midwife, she was granted certain legal status that most women didn't get. she could clearly see the injustices in the legal system,

so she spoke up. she pursued justice for the women that she cared for. >> the best selling author known for her unique style of profiling women in history through a fictionalized lens. >> i think it's really fun to take someone who really existed, take all the facts and history around their lives and build a story out of it. at the heart of the story is a real rape trial that happened. and there's also a murder mystery. that part is slightly fictionalized in that one of the men involved did disappear from the pages of her diary. so i was like, well, what happened to him? >> what do you hope readers of this book take away from it? >> i want them to know who she was. i think it is so sad that women like this get lost in history. i want them to read her story and understand the legacy that she left that we get to benefit from. >> for good morning america, eva pilgrim, abc news, new york.
