this morning. the pioneering tv screen actor and producer norman lear has died. his website broke the news this morning. he created all in the family, maude sanford and son one day at a time. and the jeffersons, among many others. he won six emmys and two peabody rs throughout his long career, lear was 101 years old. >> new development is on the israel-hamas war. israel says its troops have entered gaza, second largest city as fighting intensifies. the world health organization says hospitals in gaza are at a breaking point and struggling to care for the influx of patients. top u.n. officials are warning of an apocalypse situation with no place to go for civilians. is israel's prime minister said his country's war efforts in gaza are supported by humanitarian efforts. benjamin netanyahu said israel is allowing some fuel trucks to enter and also is aiming to prevent disease outbreaks in gaza. us officials expect the current phase of israel's ground operation to last several weeks before israel

transitions, possibly by january, to a lower intensity, hyper localized strategy. fbi director christopher wray is warning about the possibility of terror attacks in the us. jobina he's saying the terror threat level is the worst we've seen since the days before nine divided by 11. yes reggie aqui christopher wray says threats to the us are at an all time high, with the war raging between israel and hamas, a number of terror groups, including isis and al qaeda, are using social media to call for attacks. >> wray is urging congress to renew a key us spy program that would have major consequences if it expires at the end of this month section 702 of the foreign intelligence surveillance act allows the us government to collect without search warrants the communications of targeted foreigners outside the country. wray says it's expiration would be like unit lateral disarmament in the current threat environment, 702 is key to our ability to detect a foreign

terrorist organization overseas. >> is directing an operative here to carry out an attack in our own backyard? >> wray also addressed other current threats to the us, like human trafficking and drug smuggling. he said in the last two years, the fbi's has enough fentanyl and this number is just unbelievable. able to kill 270 million people. stephanie wow, that is tragic. >> jobina thank you. here in the bay area, we're seeing symbolic stands when it comes to the war over fourrael and hamas. city council meetings demanding a cease fire in the war in san francisco. the line for public comment stretched outside city hall and down the block. supervisors dean preston and hillary. ronen introduced a resolution for a cease fire in gaza, joining cities like richmond and oakland. >> israeli airstrikes killed three generations of my family at once. >> the country is looking to us as a leading voice in social and racial justice in san jose, several speakers demanded the

city council introduce a resolution. >> mayor matt mehan said city policy prevents council from taking position on foreign policy during the berkeley city council meeting calls for a cease fire led to several disruptions for the second week in a row. >> okay, this is my second attempt to restore order. this is not okay. you are too close to the dais. you're too close to staff. >> the vast majority of people here are simply asking you, our local officials, to call an end to the bloodshed and residents in hayward asked the city council to draft a cease fire resolution. >> they're some council members say they are interested in continuing this conversation tonight. >> it's a happy holiday celebration at the civic center in san francisco. the annual tree lighting ceremony is expected to bring crowds to the area. there's a much different story happening at our state capitol for its event tonight. abc7 news reporter lena howland live in san francisco to explain these very different approaches to these very similar events. hi lena. hey reggie.

>> good morning. the annual tree lighting event is expected to kick off tonight in civic center plaza from 4 to 7 and it's all happening across from city hall here behind me, which will also be lit up, making for the perfect backdrop of tonight's tree lighting. now the fun free, family friendly event will kick off with the lighting of civic center's 50 foot noble fir by san francisco mayor london breed . tonight's event also features a number of festive performances from dancers, singers and even a magician, not to mention a special appearance from the man of the hour, santa festive snacks, along with a full bar will be available for purchase. folks can also expect to see some snow flurries, a toy giveaway for kids with another planet. entertainment plus, free activities for everyone at the same time. tonight was also expected to be the tree lighting at the state capitol in sacramento that is now happening remotely because of protests against the war in gaza. governor newsom says he made the

right now, we do have a dense fog advisory in effect along the coast and in the valleys of the north bay until 10 a.m. but rain is on the way. here's future weather. by 11 a.m, we could see that rain really falling in the

north bay as we head into about 12:01 p.m. that front is crossing through the central part of the bay on its way into the south bay and the east bay. and we'll have these scattered showers through about 3 p.m. so there's a five hour window. we're looking at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for that rain, but also rough surf. we have a high surf advisory right now for large breakers and the risk of rip currents. look at current wave heights, anywhere from 14 to 16ft, right now along our coastline. looking at storm concerns today, ponding on roads is our biggest concern. slick travel midday along with some rough surf. power outages look very low because the winds are pretty calm. but sierra snow, we're looking at significant snow coming in the next 24 hours. a winter weather advisory is in effect for the sierra. we'll talk about snow totals and rain totals here locally. reggie, in nine minutes. >> drew, thank you. still ahead, a popular east bay bagel shop is set to open its new south bay location this week. and barbie director greta gerwig credits san francisco with some of her creativity. the one place that inspired her love of writing. as we head to break, a live look. this beautiful picture this

crisis on city streets. >> they all took part in the abc seven take action town hall monday night, which i was a part of san francisco is more than six months into a multi-agency effort to shutter the open air drug market, including the chp, the national guard, the dea, the fbi. the city is on pace for its deadliest year yet amid the fentanyl epidemic that could see the loss of just this year. 800 plus lives. >> part of it, we're already doing we are not only making arrests for those who are dealing drugs on our streets, we're making arrests of people

who are using drugs with the hopes of trying to get people into treatment. >> we have filed over 300 motions to detain defendants in drug dealing cases. that means keep them in custody while their cases are open and we have only had a little over 30 of those motions be granted. and so that means 300 drug dealers who are in a revolving door in our courthouse. >> i thought that was a very interesting point, that the da made some people in the audience say the city needs to put more effort into providing treatment and other services. >> that is 24 over drop in centers that is wellness hubs. that is staffing. >> i would have liked to have heard exactly how they're going to fill the shortages, like how they're going to hire mental health professionals, what they're going to do to bring them in. >> well, you covered so many issues. we did. i thought it was

interesting when the topic and it still wasn't enough. >> you know, 60 minutes goes by really fast. >> exactly. ran out of time. yeah. i thought it was interesting. on the topic of homelessness that, you know, 50% of people refusing shelter. and the da pointed out, you know, we have to make them feel uncomfortable on the streets. >> yeah, that was an interesting thing that she said that night. and you know, this goes back to this whole lawsuit that the city is a part of right now where a coalition of the homeless sued the city. and as a result, the city cannot just go to these encampments and clear them willy nilly. they have to offer shelter to every single person there. if they refuse shelter, that's when they can start clearing these camps. and this is what we saw happen in recent weeks, especially early before aipac, right at and you could tell the mayor was really frustrated when we got to that part of the conversation. >> she was i thought, especially when that question was raised, about why could we do this? you know, for aipac, clean the streets. and she pointed out that that ninth circuit court

decision. >> right. and really, the city, though, was given a reprieve when in september they got clarification from the court that they could start clearing encampments where people refuse shelter. but the question is, what do you do with the people who refuse shelter? and leanne, who was the other cohost, leah melendez, who was the other co-host of the event, she said to da brooke jenkins, is there something legally you can do? right. and this is where it got into this conversation about the possibility of in the coming year, which is less than a month away now, new laws that make it possible for cities like san francisco to force people into some kind of treatment. yeah, we'll see if the city has the wherewithal to do that, because i think they're going to get a lot of pushback and to think that, you know, the mayor pointed out 200 nonprofits in the city alone that they're working with to try to make that happen. >> so, you know, appears they have a lot of support. the question is, how will it get

done? >> yes. so if you miss this event that we did monday night, really hope that you can watch it. we are streaming it right now on our apps, which you can also download for your tv. so you can watch it right at home and you can just watch it on abc7 because we are going to be airing it here at 9 p.m. that's saturday night and then sunday at 6 p.m. so multiple chances for you to watch this either streaming and on demand or on broadcast. i think it's really worth your time. it really is. >> and it really goes in depth on a lot of those issues with those pieces that aired beforehand that affect all of us, whether you live in san francisco or not. exactly >> oscar nominated director greta gerwig credits one san francisco institution for influencing her work. gerwig who is from sacramento, was in the city last night to receive the award for her film direction at the sf film awards. according to the chronicle, she told the crowd she used to go to city lights books just down the street from where we're sitting here to fuel her creative fire.

of course, that's in north beach. she says that's where she first discovered her love of poetry. gerwig also says she likes to visit the rodin sculpture at the legion of honor. that's very cool. >> that is very neat. well, here's another neat topic now to the debate about one of the most popular stocking stuffers. how do you eat your candy canes? well a new survey from the national confectioners association says was asked, rather 1500 americans how they eat their candy canes and more than half of people say they start with the straight end of the candy cane. and a little over a quarter of people eat the curved end first. about 17% of people said they break their candy cane into pieces. so what do you guys do? >> oh, a curve of the curve. yeah. in fact, i'm questioning someone's motives. if they start with the with the other side. >> i start with the other end because the curve to me is like a handle that's a handle. yeah. oh, like an umbrella. >> oh. >> so are you upside down?

advisory until 10 a.m. there. the big story is that the fog is not nearly as bad this morning as, say, yesterday morning. later today, we are tracking a level one light storm on the abc seven storm impact scale as rain returns to the region and sierra snow. a winter weather advisory, some of our highest peaks can pick up 1 to 2ft of fresh powder. we'll show you that map in one second. here's the abc seven storm impact scale to level one light storm we have today scattered showers, isolated downpours. biggest impact will be slick roadways and rough surf along our coastline. the best chance for rainfall today between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. this afternoon. a five hour window. so the morning commute is going to be just fine despite those areas of dense fog in spots, rainfall estimates a few hundredths, up to a half of an inch of rain is possible with this level one light storm. here's the winter weather advisory in effect starting at 4 p.m. today. above 6000ft. we could see 4 to 10in of snow. but our highest peaks will likely pick up 1 to 2ft. so certainly travel is going to be tough starting at 4 p.m. as that snow

falls down, especially on 80 and 50. back here at home today, we'll have that midday rain. our level one light storm, upper 50s to lower 60s for daytime highs. then overnight tonight is a dry period. we'll have those numbers in the 40s and in the low 50s. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. the next seven days for you. light rain returns here today for the middle part of our wednesday. some scattered leftover showers thursday morning. thursday evening. dry as hanukkah begins and then some frosty mornings starting on friday into saturday. but the weekend looking very nice with a warming trend coming our way early next week jobina. >> thank you, drew. good morning, everybody. so we do have a positive update on the crash we are following in bay point. it has finally cleared, but you are still facing some residual delays. speeds are around 21mph, i guess, in that spot. westbound four before bailey road was the site of the crash. it is busy at the richmond, san rafael bridge due to this ongoing sig alert that we are now in week nine, we have a 1.6 mile long backup and again, no wide load vehicles allowed in that area. you've heard drew mention throughout the morning that the fog is not

with that wet weather along the coast. you're dealing with fog. this morning before those showers move in right around lunchtime. so we'll go hour by hour on future weather show you this rain coming up in about eight minutes. let's check in with jobina and see traffic's doing this morning. good morning. good morning, drew. >> thank you. hi, everyone. so we are going to start with actually a crash in richmond and we'll get back to the san mateo bridge in just a moment. this crash is on westbound 80 before el portal drive. your speeds are going to be around 34mph in this spot. so not too bad, but definitely under the limit at the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights came on at 529 and traffic is really backed up in this area. you will not be facing the same visibility issues through the maze that you had yesterday. you heard drew just mentioned that fog. and then we will end with the san mateo bridge here. crowded in the westbound direction as you travel towards the peninsula. reggie thanks, jobina. >> developing news out of texas. a suspect has been arrested after a series of shootings in austin near san antonio, leaving six dead and three others hurt. police say yesterday morning the suspect killed two people in a home, then shot and killed a man

and a woman. after that, he allegedly shot a man riding a bike before opening fire on a police officer who was responding to a burglary call at a home where two more people were found dead. the suspect is charged with capital murder. he could face additional charges and the former pilot accused of trying to crash an alaska airlines flight headed to sfo has been indicted by a grand jury. >> in oregon, joseph emmerson now facing 83 misdemeanor counts of recklessly endangering another person. now, that's instead of the 83 counts of attempted murder, he could have faced, emmerson told the new york times. he suffered a mental breakdown after taking psychedelic mushrooms. emmerson also texted a friend he was having a panic attack. >> oakland a's owner john fisher will reportedly need to pay alameda county $45 million by mid may, according to the chronicle. it's what he owes for his $85 million purchase of a half interest in the oakland coliseum site. the payment wasn't due until 2026. the board of supervisors made the decision

to move the move. the deadline up this week. fisher's bill is not likely to prevent the move to las vegas, but it could free the coliseum from fishers. hold on development of the property this morning. >> a four day rolling strike of california state university faculty heads to southern california. cal state los angeles faculty members will walk off the job for faculty at san francisco state. walked the picket line yesterday. you can see here, organizers say more than 1500 faculty held this rally. this included professors, librarians and counselors, all demanding an immediate 12% wage hike. csu is offering 5% every year over the next three years. the reason we do this job is because of the love of it, not just there is any money in it, but we have to have a you know, a, you know, living wage as union faculty members at cal poly pomona walked off the job on monday, the strike moves to sacramento state for the final

day tomorrow. >> some professors at san jose state worry the ongoing labor conflict in the csu system could be impacting the quality of education for students. they say the school is trying to pressure them to make up for a $14.7 million budget deficit and come to a contract agreement. one professor says there are plans to increase the number of students in some undergrad classes starting in the spring. >> our course sizes are relatively small. that means we can give feedback to students that means we can give them written assignments that i'm going to grade and give feedback on. it's different than the u.s. where they have these large lecture halls. we don't have large lecture halls here at san jose state, but they're asking us to change that model to a university spokesperson told abc7 news. >> some classes and departments may be impacted more than others, saying it's closed some sections due to quote, enrollment and resource availability. >> san francisco mayor london breed is getting ready to flip the switch on a holiday tradition. the city's tree lighting at civic center plaza gets underway tonight and it

comes as the governor announces changes to the capital's version of the lighting ceremony. let's go live to abc seven news reporter lena howland with what to know about both events. good morning, lena. >> good morning. by tonight, this area in between city hall and civic center plaza will be filled with people all hoping to play a role in lighting up the city this holiday season. here's what you need to know. civic centers, massive 50 foot noble fir tree will be lit by san francisco mayor london breed right around 530. tonight's event also features a number of festive performances from dancers, singers and even a magician. not to mention a special appearance from the man of the hour, santa. folks can also expect to see some snow flurries, a toy giveaway for kids with another planet entertainment. plus, free activities for everyone at the same time. tonight was also expected to be the tree lighting at the state capitol in sacramento that is now happening remotely because of protests against the war in gaza. a

a.m. and 3 p.m. later on today. and this storm will bring some significant snow to the sierra. finally, our highest peaks could see 1 to 2ft of fresh powder. here's the abc's seven storm impact scale today. it's a level one light storm. we're tracking scattered showers, isolated downpours. the biggest issue will have slick roadways and that rough surf. we have a high surf advisory in effect right now along our coastline. rainfall totals across the region. again, that five hour window will pick up anywhere from about a few hundredths to as much as a half of an inch of rain later on today. the showers should wrap up between 3 and 6 p.m. this evening. let's talk about that snow. winter weather advisory begins at 4:00 pm above 6000ft, 4 to 10in of snow. but our highest peaks, look at that, 1 to 2ft of snow. so through tomorrow. so that's going to create some slick travel. certainly on 80 and 50. back here at home today, it's all about that midday rain. our level one light storm and temperatures in the upper 50s to the lower 60s overnight tonight. it is dry with a blend of stars and clouds and numbers mainly
